  • Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden Talk ‘Slow Horses’

Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden in “Slow Horses,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

Premiering on Apple TV+ beginning April 1st is the new spy series ‘Slow Horses,’ which is based on author Mick Herron’s novel of the same name.

The series follows British MI5 agent River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), who after a botched mission is exiled to Slough House, which is an administrative purgatory for service agents. Cartwright and his fellow former agents now perform boring administrative tasks and work for the miserable Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who expects everyone to quit out of frustration.

But soon the former agents of Slough House, or Slow Horses as they’ve been nicknamed, become entangled in a dangerous mission at London’s Regent’s Park. In addition to Lowden and Oldman, the cast also includes Olivia Cooke, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Jonathan Pryce.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden about their work on ‘Slow Horses.

Moviefone: To begin with, Gary can you talk about your approach to taking this character from the page to the screen?

Gary Oldman: Well, I was very lucky because Jackson Lamb is really created, he’s from the imagination of Mick Herron, who is the writer of the books that the series is based on. He created this world and this incredible character, and it was all there. It was all pretty much on the page. All I had to do was just follow all the signposts.

I knew immediately when I read the book and read the scripts, I just thought I could have a lot of fun playing Jackson. I don’t particularly like him, but I do like playing him and his interaction with the characters in the piece. But a lot of the work, I must say, was done for me in the writing, because it’s very, very good writing.

MF: Finally, Jack can you talk about your character’s journey and how he feels about being sent to Slough House?

Jack Lowden: He goes there because he is pushed into making a mistake, given the wrong information, which only adds to his constant frustration. The fact is that he’s just in this one big, bad mood for all six episodes. So, it’s definitely not his fault. I think we were talking earlier about the fact that Jackson, his boss, knows that because he knows everything and chooses to sort of beat him with it.

I think his career, when we meet him is probably going brilliantly well. I think it’s probably going very well. I think where he then ends up is just not something that he could foresee at all. Then it all just comes crumbling down through no fault of his own.

    FX/Amazon

Lakeith Stanfield and Olivia Cooke may live happily ever after. The two stars are in talks for an untitled fairy tale film at Disney+.

The project comes from writer Cat Vasko and will be directed by Susan Johnson (“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”). No plot details are known so far.

Stanfield’s career has heated up thanks to his recurring role in FX’s “Atlanta” and a memorable turn in “Get Out.” He also starred in the acclaimed indie “Sorry to Bother You” and will appear in Rian Johnson’s upcoming mystery “Knives Out.”

Cooke starred as Becky Sharp in Amazon’s period miniseries “Vanity Fair” and has appeared in “Life Itself” and “Ready Player One.”

    Warner Bros.

The upcoming heist film “Naked Singularity” has an eclectic creative team both in front of and behind the camera, and its latest cast addition is continuing that trend.

Deadline has the scoop that actress Olivia Cooke has signed on to co-star in the flick — based on a novel by Sergio De La Pava — which features “Star Wars” headliner John Boyega in the lead role. Cooke is coming off a big 2018, starring in the sci-fi tentpole “Ready Player One,” acclaimed indie “Thoroughbreds,” and “This Is Is” creator Dan Fogelman’s feature Life Itself.” (Though maybe she’d rather forget that last one.)

At this point, it’s unclear what role Cooke will be playing in “Naked Singularity,” though we imagine it will be a significant one. She’ll appear opposite Boyega’s protagonist, who makes a rash decision while dealing with personal and professional turmoil.

Here’s the breakdown of the film, according to Deadline:

The story centers on an idealistic young New York City public defender burned out by the system and in the middle of a mental breakdown. Seeing signs of the universe collapsing around him, he gets suspended and decides to rob a $75M drug deal off one of his clients.

Chase Palmer, who co-wrote 2017’s hit “It” adaptation, is making his feature directing debut on the project.

Amazon’s upcoming anthology series based on the popular New York Times column “Modern Love” has just revealed its sprawling cast, and the starry ensemble is absolutely brimming with A-listers, award winners, and familiar character actors.

Among the biggest names in the bunch are Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, John Slattery (who also stars in Amazon’s other high-profile, star-filled anthology series, “The Romanoffs”), and Dev Patel. And that’s not all.

The rest of the impressive cast includes: Catherine Keener (“Get Out”), Andy Garcia (“Ocean’s Eleven”), Cristin Milioti (“Black Mirror”), Brandon Victor Dixon (“Power”), Olivia Cooke (“Ready Player One”), Andrew Scott (“Sherlock”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Shea Whigham (“Homecoming”), Gary Carr (“The Deuce,” “Downton Abbey”), Sofia Boutella (“Kingsman: The Secret Service”) and John Gallagher, Jr. (“The Newsroom”).

Behind the camera, the talent is equally impressive. Emmy Rossum (“Shameless”), Sharon Horgan (“Catastrophe,” “Divorce”) and Tom Hall (“Sensation”) are all set to direct installments of “Modern Love,” and the series will also be written, directed, and produced by John Carney (“Once,” “Begin Again,” “Sing Street”).

“It’s like I woke up in the actor candy store,” Carney said in a statement. “We’ve managed to assemble a dream cast of my favorite actors. It’s a testament to the reach of the original column and of how, now more than ever, love is the only certainty.”

“Modern Love” will feature eight standalone episodes, and “explore love in its multitude of forms – including sexual, romantic, familial, platonic, and self love,” according to the show’s official description. It’s currently in production in New York City.

Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming film “Ready Player One” has found a lead actress in Olivia Cooke. The “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” star is currently in negotiations, but she reportedly beat out a list of more recognizable names like Elle Fanning and Lola Kirke, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Adapted from the hit sci-fi novel by Ernie Cline, Cooke will play the love interest to a yet-to-be-cast male lead.

The story takes place in a virtual world called Oasis, where a teen finds himself in a treasure hunt fraught with danger.

Cooke’s star continues to soar after landing the lead role in this summer’s “Me, Earl and the Dying Girl,” an indie that won the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Watch Cooke discuss her character in “Me, Earl and the Dying Girl” during an interview with Made in Hollywood.
