  • ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Star Awkwafina Lands Comedy Central Series

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Star Awkwafina Lands Comedy Central Series

    Warner Bros.

After having a breakout 2018 at the box office, rapper-comedian Awkwafina is taking her talents to the small screen.

The “Crazy Rich Asians” star is set to headline her own Comedy Central series — appropriately dubbed “Awkwafina” —  which is loosely based on her own life. The half-hour show chronicles the exploits of “a twenty-something living in Queens, striving for a larger than life existence while living with her father and grandmother.”

Awkwafina co-wrote the 10-episode season alongside TV comedy vets Karey Dornetto (“SMILF,” “Portlandia”) and Teresa Hsiao (“Family Guy,” “American Dad”). Lucia Aniello, who’s helmed fellow Comedy Central series “Broad City,” as well as the 2017 flick “Rough Night,” will be directing.

“I’ve been watching Comedy Central since I was old enough to hold a remote, and so many of their shows have defined who I am today,” Awkwafina said in a statement. “I am so honored to be given their platform to tell the story of an Asian American girl against the backdrop of the city I was raised.”

We’re excited to see Awkwafina finally step into a starring role, after her scene-stealing supporting performances in “CRA” and “Ocean’s 8.” Now we just have to wait for a premiere date.

  • ‘Ocean’s 8’ Crosses $100 Million and Mindy Kaling Wants a Sequel

The fabulous females of “Ocean’s 8” have pulled off yet another impressive heist: Scoring $100 million at the box office. And in honor of that milestone, one of the film’s stars is calling for a sequel.

While “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” was busy roaring to the top of the charts this past weekend, “Ocean’s” pulled in an additional $11.6 million, bringing its total domestic gross to just over $100 million (plus an additional $70 million-plus overseas) since its release earlier this month. Factoring in its strong performance out of the gate — especially in comparison to the previous “Ocean’s” flicks — and its ridiculously starry cast, it certainly seems like the series is due for another entry, right?

That’s what star (and new Academy member) Mindy Kaling thinks, and she wasn’t shy about saying so on social media. After the news broke about the film’s new total, Kaling tweeted that she was ready for more “Ocean’s.”

“Whoa!!! Congrats @oceans8movie!” the actress wrote on Twitter. “$100 million!?! #SequelMuch.”

Kaling’s costar, Anne Hathaway, also toasted the milestone, sharing a celebratory throwback Instagram snap featuring two more fellow stars, Rihanna and Sarah Paulson.

    Oh hey $100,000,000… #oceans8

We’ll be curious to see if Kaling’s #SequelMuch hashtag prediction comes true. Keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned.

  • ‘Ocean’s 8’ Stars React to Big Box Office Debut via Social Media

The box office numbers are in, and the “Ocean’s 8” cast has earned some high-fives.

Estimates looked good leading into the heist flick’s opening weekend, and “Ocean’s 8” didn’t disappoint. The movie took the top spot at the box office in its debut over high-profile competitors like “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Deadpool 2.” Per Box Office Mojo, “Ocean’s 8” earned an impressive $41.6 million.

The accomplishment understandably thrilled the film’s star-studded cast, which includes Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sarah Paulson. Half of them have responded on Twitter or Instagram at the time of this writing, and it sounds like they couldn’t be happier with their film’s performance. Rihanna congratulated them all on Monday, and then added in her post that she is “so happy and proud to be a woman.”

Both Kaling and Hathaway reposted Rihanna’s Instagram post; Kaling simply wrote “Happy Monday” alongside the photo, while her co-star wrote more, thanking “everyone who made [this] possible.” Meanwhile, Awkwafina had another empowering message; she took on anyone who doubted the power of women.

“Wait wasn’t there a comedian that once said there could never be a.. NVMD GIRL HOLD MY INVISALIGN,” she wrote.

“Ocean’s 8” is in theaters now.

  • ‘Ocean’s 8’ Box Office Estimates Indicate It Should Do the Franchise Proud

Reboots, sequels, and spinoffs can inspire “love-it-or-hate-it” reactions, but so far, “Ocean’s 8” appears to be drawing more of a “love-it” response. The early box office estimates are promising as we head into the film’s opening weekend.

Warner Bros. has released its numbers, and the production company expects the heist movie to break $30 million when it debuts at the North American box office this weekend, Deadline reports. Village Roadshow thinks it will do even better; the film’s co-production company predicts “Ocean’s 8” will top $40 million.

If the movie matches either of those predictions, it would do the Ocean’s franchise proud. “Ocean’s Eleven” opened to $38.1 million in 2001, according to Box Office Mojo, and its two sequels saw openings of $39.2 million and $36.1 million, respectively. A similar box office debut would certainly be a good sign for the franchise’s first female-powered movie.

The heist flick has caught plenty of attention with its star-studded cast. The list of actresses includes Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, and Awkwafina. Many of them have had big box office success in the past, and we’ll soon see if they can repeat it.

    “Ocean’s 8” opens June 8.

  • Watch Cate Blanchett and Sarah Paulson Completely Derail an Interview (in a Good Way)

Actors who’ve been hitting the non-stop promotional circuit for a big summer movie are bound to get a bit loopy after a while, and that’s precisely what happened to “Ocean’s 8” stars Cate Blanchett and Sarah Paulson during a recent visit to “Today.” And after watching their ridiculously silly sit-down with anchor Hoda Kotb, you might dissolve in a fit of giggles, too.

The actresses stopped by “Today” on Tuesday to chat about their roles in the all-female “Ocean’s Eleven” spinoff, but ended up mostly just talking loudly amongst themselves, throwing in the occasional joking barb at each other (two-time Oscar winner Blanchett said of Paulson’s lone Emmy win, “That’s nice”) and wondering aloud if their off-the-rails exchange was being aired live (it was). It was enough to bring Kotb to tears — of laughter, that is.

The host tried several times to steer the conversation back to “Ocean’s 8,” even bringing in co-host Savannah Guthrie for reinforcement, but by that time, it was too late.

“We didn’t do anything but just be crazy people,” Paulson said by way of apology toward the end of the interview.

We’re totally okay with it. If “Ocean’s 8” is even half as zany as this promo appearance, moviegoers are in for some fun.

The flick hits theaters this Friday, June 8.

  • Mindy Kaling Shares Her ‘Ocean’s 8’ Character’s Skill: ‘I’m Not Making It Sound Great’

Being a part of the star-studded “Ocean’s 8” cast is a big deal, but Mindy Kaling still had one more wish: for her character to contribute meaningfully to the movie’s fictional heist.

The comedian is out promoting the female-led Ocean’s trilogy spinoff, and she appeared as a guest on the June 4 episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” While chatting with host Ellen DeGeneres, she opened up how all the characters have special skills and she feared her character would only be bitten by a dog or fall down stairs as a distraction. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case; she revealed that her character, Amita, contributes by being “good at jewelry.”

DeGeneres understandably was a little confused by that answer, leading Kaling to clarify that her character is a jeweler.

“I see,” DeGeneres responded. That comes in handy when you’re doing a heist?”

“I’m not making it sound great,” Kaling said, laughing at DeGeneres’s question, “but it was helpful. I promise it’s helpful.”

Beyond shedding light on Kaling’s character, the interview also covered a variety of other topics. The actress talked about her pregnancy, motherhood, and even how she got her daughter to stop fussing during a visit to Oprah’s house. Watch below.

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” airs weekdays, and “Ocean’s 8” is due to hit theaters June 8.

  • The Starry First ‘Ocean’s 8’ Poster Is Giving Us Major Coat and Sunglasses Envy

The upcoming “Ocean’s Eleven” spinoff “Ocean’s 8” just revealed its first poster, and the flick looks like it will be just as stylish as it is star-studded.

That makes sense, since the film centers around a heist at the annual fashion-centric Met Gala event. But based on this image, the titular thieves will be looking just as glamorous as the famous faces they’re ripping off.ocean's eight, ocean's 8, poster, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Sarah Paulson

Of course, it’s hard not to notice that those thieves are played by a group of equally famous actresses, including a couple of Oscar winners (and one Grammy winner). Pictured on the poster, from left, are Sandra Bullock (playing ringleader Debbie Ocean, cousin of George Clooney’s “Ocean’s” character), Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, and Awkwafina.

We don’t know too much else about the movie right now, but it’s set to have a bunch of cameos, including Matt Damon (reprising his role as pickpocket Linus Caldwell), James Corden (reportedly playing an insurance investigator who catches on to the group’s scheme), and Olivia Munn (playing herself, in a dress that cost her a lot of money). Also look out for plenty of big names from the fashion industry, too.

“Ocean’s 8” is set to hit theaters on June 8, 2018.
