  • ‘Game of Thrones’ star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is a hunter being hunted in the trailer for ‘The Silencing’

‘Game of Thrones’ star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is a hunter being hunted in the trailer for ‘The Silencing’

In the upcoming film ‘The Silencing,’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister from ‘Game of Thrones’) plays a man living in the wilderness who may be able to help the local sheriff track down a killer. And this killer is armed with something we don’t see all that often in the movies – an atlatl, a type of spear-thrower.

    Here’s the official synopsis:

A reformed hunter (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and a sheriff (Annabelle Wallis) are caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse when they set out to track a killer who may have kidnapped the hunter’s daughter five years ago.

From what we see in the trailer, the film will have plenty of jumps, especially because the killer’s choice of weapon allows for a lot less noise than any firearm or even a bow. And a silent killer is certainly in line with the film’s title.

‘The Silencing’ will be available on DirecTV on July 16, then in theaters and streaming on August 14.

  • ‘Domino’ Trailer Previews Brian De Palma’s Long-Delayed Revenge Thriller

‘Domino’ Trailer Previews Brian De Palma’s Long-Delayed Revenge Thriller

    HBO

Brian De Palma’s “Domino” is finally coming to the big screen.

The long-delayed movie has experienced some bumps in its road to theaters, with the director himself saying he wasn’t sure it would ever get release.

Well, it is and there’s a trailer to prove it! “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays a Copenhagen cop seeking justice for his partner’s murder by an ISIS member. Then, he is unwittingly caught in a cat and mouse chase with a duplicitous CIA agent (Guy Pearce) who is using the killer as a pawn to trap other ISIS members.

Coster-Waldau’s fellow “Game of Thrones” cast member Carice van Houten also appears in the movie.

While the thriller has political overtones, “It is the revenge story,” De Palma has said. “The whole political aspect will be very little exploited, the film was more for me a new opportunity to explore a visual narrative. In the film, terrorists are obsessed with the idea that their actions are instantly visible live on the Internet or on TV.”

“Domino” opens in theaters May 31.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 has a high bar to live up to, but from everything we’ve heard so far, the cast and crew did all they could to make sure the HBO series goes out with a bang.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau‘s latest interview has further raised our expectations. The actor recently spoke with the Huffington Post, and he highlighted how much the cast and crew put into the final season.

“I think if it hadn’t have been the last season, people would’ve just collapsed,” he told the publication. “We wouldn’t have made it.”

He used the example of the battle shoot that went on for more than 50 nights, calling it “just unheard of.” Although he didn’t go into details, we know it was rough. The producers wrote a thank you message to the cast and crew that ended up being shared on social media in April, and it mentioned that they had to weather darkness, snow, rain, mud, and other unpleasant factors throughout the many weeks it took.

Still, although we believe Coster-Waldau when he says production was taxing, we can’t accept that it’s good they don’t have to do it again. We still haven’t come to terms with the fact that Season 8 is indeed the show’s final one. It’s just too unfathomable.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 is expected to premiere in 2019.

  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Reacts to ‘Game of Thrones’ Theory on Gendry and Cersei

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Reacts to ‘Game of Thrones’ Theory on Gendry and Cersei

Game of Thrones, Cersei, Jaime Lannister
    HBO

Does Cersei Lannister have a secret child — a legitimate one?

Game of Thrones” Season 8 is the final season, and it will premiere its six episodes next year. It remains to be seen how many theories will be proven true or false. The HBO series adapts George R.R. Martin‘s novels, but there have been several increasing differences over the years — plus, the show has now outpaced the books. GRRM has two more books still to be printed, while the series is already finished writing its story.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) has been talking up the Season 8 finale, saying it ends the right way and all the pieces fit.

He told HuffPost he wrote a letter to the writers after he read the final script, saying “‘I don’t think you could’ve done a better job at finishing this story.’ To me, it was very satisfying but also very surprising and all the things that I was hoping for. It still made sense. It wasn’t like one of those where the killer is suddenly revealed in the last act and you go, ‘Oh! I didn’t see that coming.’ Here, they’ve done a really, really good job.”

To some fans, one of the theories that kinda makes sense is that Gendry (Joe Dempsie) is the legitimate son of King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) and Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).

    Game of Thrones, Gendry
    HBO

We already know Gendry is Robert’s son, but supposedly the bastard son of Robert and one of his many side chicks.

But there are fan theories out there with arguments for a Gendry/Cersei connection. Winter Is Coming broke the theories down – including a possible hint in the Season 1 episode “The Kingsroad”:

“Cersei visits Catelyn Stark during Catelyn’s vigil at the bedside of her son, Brandon, whom Jaime had attempted to murder. She offers her sympathies to Catelyn and speaks of her first born son, a ‘black-haired beauty’ who died shortly after his birth.”

    Maybe he didn’t die?

There are more arguments, but also the counter-argument that Cersei being Gendry’s mother would go against Maggy the Frog’s prophecy that Cersei would only have three children. As far as we know, those are the three kids she had with her twin brother, Jaime Lannister — Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen.

True or not, HuffPost asked Nikolaj about the theory:

HuffPost: Speaking of Joe Dempsie, we interviewed him last year and he said he could actually be Cersei’s legitimate son. Do you have thoughts on this theory?

Nikolaj: She’s been a busy bee, my dear sister. [Laughs] There are so many theories out there that you comment on one and then it takes on its own life. But, yes, I’ve heard that Gendry [pause] … I think Joe just wanted to get on the throne and that’s why he’s putting it out there.

There are so many fan theories out there involving Lannisters, Targaryens, Baratheons, etc. As far as we know, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) now has the most “legitimte” claim to the Iron Throne, but he’s not the type of guy to give two figs about that — and neither is Gendry. Besides, with the White Walker fight for mankind ahead of them, sitting on that throne is the least of anyone’s concerns. Except maybe Cersei. Everyone else seems ready to break the wheel.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 starts next year, probably in May or June.

  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Teases a New Look for Jaime in ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8

From “Game of Thrones” Season 8, it’s clear beards are very much in. (Are mustaches out?)

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is currently filming “Game of Thrones” Season 8 for its 2019 premiere on HBO. During a recent talk with ShortList, he answered questions on Jaime’s hair transformations through the series, and his current set-up.

Here’s that part of the ShortList Q&A:

You’re the face – literally – of L’Oréal’s new campaign. What’s the beard situ at the moment? Long, short, non-existent?

I’m shooting the last season of Thrones. Generally speaking, I’m not crazy-hairy, but I have a full beard. Call me Hairy Styles.

Fans are split on whether they liked your character, Jaime Lannister, with long or short hair. What’s your verdict?

He was due a haircut. Especially after spending two seasons dragged through the mud. There was a big change in the character, so a haircut is a way to signal that.

It’s true that Jaime has run the hair gamut from Seasons 1-8, including some very rough looks for the handsomest man in the Seven Kingdoms.

Coster-Waldau confirmed that he did not wear a wig, that was all his own hair every time. Based on his new comments — and the photo at top, of three GoT stars at a Golden Globes after-party in January — it sounds like Jaime will be much hairier in Season 8 than Season 7.

There are only six episodes ahead in the final season, and Jaime’s beard will probably not be the biggest change we can expect. Season 8 will film until June, and we’re on standby for some kind of first teaser or official set photo.

  • Forget Elf on the Shelf: ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Need ‘Lannister on the Bannister’

Call now and get Targaryen in an Aquarium absolutely free!

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” just created a new holiday tradition for families sick to death of the destructive powers — and high maintenance — of the Elf on the Shelf. Jimmy told his audience the elf was tearing his family apart. “But fortunately, there’s a new little sentry for children of all religions that’s based on a very popular series on HBO.”

Cue “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, aka Jaime Lannister, as “Lannister on the Bannister” in his own creepy little ad.

Cheerful ad voice-over: “No one can escape the Kingslayer’s watchful eye!”
Jaime Lannister: “You steal that candy, and I’ll chop your hand off … LIKE THIS!”

The one-handed man goes on to terrorize the two children in the ad, while hitting on their mother. “Now, you remind me of my sister…”

    Check it out:
That violent, mutton-eating demon is clearly superior to any elf. And what a great deal to get a Dany aquarium at the same time, for only four monthly payments of $19.99. “A Lannister always pays his installments.”

(By the way, if you call that 1-800 number, it takes you to Santa’s Naughty or Nice hotline.)

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 is now filming, for a (probable) 2019 release on HBO.

  • ‘The Simpsons’ Premiere Spoofed ‘Game of Thrones’ (With the ‘Real’ Jaime Lannister)

“The Simpsons” launched Season 29 last night with a fantasy-themed episode featuring “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

The Jaime Lannister actor voiced, naturally, a Jaime Lannister-esque twin to Marge Simpson.

The episode — called “The Serfsons” — didn’t just play off GoT, it also referenced other fantasy TV shows, books, and films, including “The Lord of the Rings.”

“It’s a sprawling epic fantasy episode that’s worthy of a 9-hour movie trilogy — 10-and-a-half hours after you count the extended edition,” “Simpsons” executive producer Matt Selman told EW. “Setting an episode in a fantasy world allowed us to tell a deeper, more emotional story that had huge surges of emotion and feeling but also is really silly. It has a lot of satire and asks interesting philosophical questions — and makes fun, pointed political commentary.”

GoT fans noticed more than just Jaime Lannister, there was also a three-eyed raven, regular-eyed ravens sending messages, Marge’s mom as a White Walker, and a Ned head on a spike, among other things:

IndieWire broke down the premiere’s many references to “Game of Thrones,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Dungeons & Dragons,” “Magic: The Gathering,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and more.

“The Simpsons” Season 29 airs Sundays on Fox. “Game of Thrones” Season 8 starts filming this month for a premiere in 2018 or (more likely) 2019 on HBO.

  • Fear Does Crazy Things to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of Game of Thrones in Shot Caller

    Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Shot Caller
    Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Shot Caller

It may seem like a long, long way from the fantasy world of Westeros in “Game of Thrones” to the harsh realism of “Shot Caller,” but Nikolaj Coster-Waldau says a radical change in circumstances for anybody can happen in the blink of an eye.

Coster-Waldau, best known as Jamie Lannister in the HBO hit, was drawn to the gritty drama “Shot Caller” by the tantalizing question of: What if a fatal DUI lands a good family man behind bars?

“I thought it was a great script and a great story. I love those kinds of movies,” he tells Made in Hollywood reporter Patrick Stinson. “If I was in his shoes, what would I do?”

In the case of “Shot Caller,” successful businessman Jacob Harlon – convicted of manslaughter in an accident that kills his friend – falls in with a gang, gets even longer time, ditches his family to protect them, and finds himself chased by the cops after he gets out.

“When he gets in there, the first thing he sees is that another rookie inmate is raped,” Coster-Waldau explains. “That will put the fear in you. That’s the whole thing: this whole constant fear. You’re living in fear, and fear will make you do crazy things.”

Director Ric Roman Waugh says anybody could relate to this man’s plight. “We all are guilty of bending the rules,” he says. “It could have been about having a couple of glasses of wine. It could have been texting and driving. It could have been about not paying attention, period. We take things for granted. How fast our lives could change.”

  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Teases ‘Hope’ for Jaime Lannister

Build Presents Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Discussing The New Film 'Shot Caller'If you think Jamie Lannister’s walking a tightrope between good and evil, just wait until you meet Nikolaj Coster-Waldau‘s new character

The “Game of Thrones” star’s new film “Shot Caller” present an even more stark portrait of moral side-choosing. Coster-Waldau plays Jacob, an affluent stockbroker and family man responsible for a fatal drunk driving accident who in a sincere effort to make good accepts a sentencing that places him among the most hardened and deadly prison population, and his efforts to survive his incarceration lead to a startling transformation into Money, one of the prison gang’s most ruthlessly effective members.

It’s a harrowing performance from one of TV’s most charismatic presences, and a role he relished for its all-too-human nuances. He’s no fan of clear-cut good guy or bad guy roles, he tells Moviefone — and that’s why he’s still not picking a side for Jamie, either.

Moviefone: What a dark and disturbing world you entered into.

    Nicolaj Coster-Waldau: I know!

In your preparation, what was eye-opening about the world that you were going to depict?

There were quite a few moments of where I was like, to be honest, of disbelief. I love the script. I was blown away by the script by that whole world. But of course my question to the director Ric Roman Waugh was was like, “How real is this? Can it really be so?” Then doing the research, meeting the prisoners, going to prison, realizing that it’s very authentic. It’s a fictional tale, but it’s very much based on real stories.

I met a guy who had been a shot caller, who was one of the exceptions to the rule. He left. He was out, but he had gone to prison as a 20-year-old. He was a non-violent offender, and he kind of went through that same thing, being dropped into the shark tank, refusing to be a victim, fighting back. Then joined the gang to survive. Doing the whole thing, learning how to be extremely violent, and that was an eye-opener. You always hear about these things, that prison is tough, and criminals are made in prison. But to actually find out that the reality is almost worse than what I imagined was really eye-opening and shocking.

Obviously, what I hope for is, first and foremost and most importantly, that people enjoy the movie, and entertain, and find it thrilling. Hopefully after you might think a little bit about this world. We’re wasting so many resources with our prison system. It doesn’t make sense that the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world incarcerates more people than any other country. That we lock so many people up, that we put so many non-violent offenders together with very violent offenders, and that’s creating even more hardened criminals. It’s just a waste of resources and a waste of lives.

Was there a particular scene or aspect of the film that took a lot of work on your part? That you really had to get yourself in the right place to pull it off?

One of the key moments in the journey is when he is asked to stab a guy for the first time, which is kind of a turning point in the life of Jacob. It’s kind of when Jacob becomes Money, if you will. I kept trying to understand, first of all, I understood that he would do it because he was so afraid. I understood the whole fear. These guys are just in fear all the time, and spend so much energy trying to not show that fear.

But what actually happens in your mind when you stab someone for the first time — I spoke to a guy who had done that. I asked him about it, and he was like,”First of all, you’re more afraid than anything else.” And then, when you finally do it, he said he felt, and the blood started flowing, he said he felt like a sense of empowerment and a sense of control that he hadn’t had since he was thrown in prison.

But that was a tricky moment because I had to understand it on a very … I can’t explain it better than a basic level of the character. Then on top of that, of course there were the challenges of the physical aspect of getting ready to do the part was challenging, but it was also an easy thing. I knew I had to get to get to a certain size. I had to add some pounds of flesh, if you will. I think the biggest challenge was the psychological, trying to make the ends meet.

Did putting on the physical part — the hair, the mustache, the tattoos, the muscles — get you there easier?

Of course, yeah. Of course. Also, I think it was crucial for the audience as well, that you can see it. I think it wouldn’t have worked if we hadn’t done that. It has to be a tangible transformation. Also, that’s what happens. You see these guys post-prison, they do do all that, because they put on the armor.

I asked this one guy about it. I asked the guy, “Are you all like white supremacists? What all these German Iron Cross — what’s all that?” He said, “No, we’re not. We’re gangsters. We’re a gang. Yes, you can find a few guys who understand the ideology, but most of us, we’re just gangsters. We put on this to put fear in you.” And I said, “Well, it works.”

But it also worked for the character. It worked for me. Because in the end, he is terrifying. The other guys respect him and fear him, which is important. You have to believe that. You have to believe that someone like The Beast or Jon Bernthal and those guys, they’re very menacing when you see them. You have to understand and believe that they would fear this guy who, when he ends his prison, is a pretty shaken up man.Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister in Season 6 of GAME OF THRONESYou’ve been playing Jaime Lannister right on the razor’s edge of good and bad. He does appalling things, and yet he still shows enough humanity that some of us still root for him.

Listen, the appalling things, that’s also human. That what we have to remember, and that’s what I love about “Shot Caller.” We live in a world where we like to divide up into them and us, between nations, and between the color of your skin, and between gender, and we do between people — when you’re a criminal and you’re put away in prison, then you become them, and you’re no long one of us. I think we have to understand that them, they are us, and we are also them.

The key to these characters, like with Jaime Lannister, even though he does something horrific, like pushing a innocent kid out of a window, he’s still a human being, and he does it because he had some reason. It doesn’t make his action is horrific, but it’s a very human thing to do, unfortunately.

As we see Jamie getting pulled in different directions now, are you rooting for him? Are you rooting for Jaime to have a redemption? Or are you rooting for him to go full evil?

I’ve never thought of him as being torn between the dark side or redemption. I hope that he finds a path that works for him, also when it comes to his messed up relationship to his sister. He’s torn between this extreme sense of loyalty to his family and to his sister, and I think it’s starting to get in the way of his judgment, to put it lightly.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Isn’t That Into Matching Cast Tattoos

Premiere Of HBO's 'Game Of Thrones' Season 7 - Red CarpetWhen it comes to getting matching tattoos with his “Game of Thrones” cast mates, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is basically like, “Sweet … but no.”

The actor visited “The Late Late Show” on Tuesday, and when host James Corden asked him if he was on board with Kit Harington‘s plan for the surviving cast members to get tattoos, Coster-Waldau seemed pretty reluctant. Although he dubbed the idea as “so sweet,” he admitted he’s “not in favor.”

That said, Coster-Waldau isn’t completely ruling it out. Although he clearly is not thrilled about “needles in [his] skin,” he was open to at least seeing the tattoo before deciding.

“I mean, if it’s a great tattoo…” he told Corden.

Even if the actor never gets it, at least it was fun to watch him, Corden, and fellow guest Lin-Manuel Miranda theorize over possible tattoos. We like the dragon idea.

“The Late Late Show” airs weeknights at 12:35 a.m. ET/PT.
