Opening in theaters on December 6th, ‘The Order’ finds Jude Law starring in the based-on-truth story of a committed, troubled FBI agent who digs into reports of a white supremacist group changing their tactics and led by charismatic individual.

We’re not short of stories that have their roots in real life, this one shapes up to be particularly intriguing, partly because, despite its 1980s setting, it has resonance in today’s particularly divided political world.

Australian director Justin Kerzel has made it something of a specialty bringing based-on-truth movies to screens, though often with a twist. Here, he lets the persuasive, tough real-life story do most of the heavy lifting, casting well and letting all the main players be layered rather than stereotypical examples of, say, white supremacists or FBI agents.

Yes, there are some expected moments, but for the most part, Kurzel and his creative team keep you engaged with a screenplay that crackles with energy and tension, driven by some stellar acting.

    Script and Direction

The script for ‘The Order’ comes from Zach Baylin (who has had mixed fortunes of late –– solid success with ‘King Richard,’ but he also contributed to recent huge flop ‘The Crow’), here adapting Kevin Flynn’s book ‘The Silent Brotherhood.’

He finds the right notes to hit following a dogged investigator drawn into something truly malicious in a small town, crafting characters based on the real people who feel like lived-in humans with their foibles intact.

Jude Law in 'The Order'. Photo: Amazon MGM Studios.

Kurzel brings that script to life with style and panache, but no little sense of the gritty life some of these people lead, but also relishing the beautiful Pacific Northwest backdrops against which some terrible acts take place. As the plot begins to deepen and twist, he keeps it all on track, getting fine work out of his cast and making sure to stay grounded.

If there’s a criticism to be found it is that, like some other recent movies, it occasionally feels flabby, but once the characters are back to figuring each other out, the interest level soon picks back up.

    Performances

    Jude Law as Terry Husk

Jude Law in 'The Order'. Photo: Amazon MGM Studios.

Husk is well-named, since when we meet him, he’s on the verge of being a husk of a man; burned out by the job and with his family hanging on by a thread. Yet he’s also devoted and passionate about tracking down the violent criminals at the heart of the film and Law finds the right take-no-BS attitude to bring him to life.

This is far from a noble knight in shining armor, more a dedicated public servant frustrated by those around him and not afraid to let that show in encounters with cops and fellow agents.

    Nicholas Hoult as Bob Matthews

Nicholas Hoult in 'The Order'. Photo: Amazon MGM Studios.

Hoult’s fresh-faced charisma works well for Matthews, the devious yet charming white supremacist who inspires others to terrible deeds while also carrying out some of his own.

You won’t sympathize with the man’s ideals, but you will understand while people would be willing to follow him, and Hoult is great at both his violent extremes and the quieter moments he shares with family (and, er lover, who is expecting his child.)

    Tye Sheridan as Jamie Bowen

Tye Sheridan in 'The Order'. Photo: Amazon MGM Studios.

The local deputy who has his own reasons for A) loathing the white supremacists who have invaded his town and B) frustrations at the lack of progress in dealing with them before Husk shows up is a great counterpoint to both the FBI agent and Matthews.

Sheridan pitches him well as both eager but also wary.

    Supporting Cast

Jurnee Smollett in 'The Order'. Photo: Amazon MGM Studios.

Jurnee Smollett certainly gets her share of standout moments as Joanne Carney, the FBI agent who takes over leading the case and clashes with Husk’s more forceful approach as hers tends to favor a by-the-book approach.

Likewise Alison Oliver and Odessa Young, who play Matthews’ wife and lover respectively; both have believable chemistry with Hoult and are convincing in their roles. Veteran character Victor Slezak, meanwhile, makes the most of a smaller role as hate-spewing (but less violent-leaning than Matthews church leader Richard Butler, who becomes key to the case on both sides.

    Final Thoughts

It might not be quite up there with Kurzel’s best true-crime offerings, but ‘The Order’ certainly has a lot to recommend it if you’re a fan of tenacious law enforcement officers trying to take down a threat that impacts locally but promises to affect the country as a whole.

And given the state of the nation, culture and politics in particular, it has a lot to say about how hatred curdles into violence and what we all need to be more careful of spotting in our own communities.

‘The Order’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

What’s the plot of ‘The Order’?

In 1983, a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest.

As baffled law enforcement agents scrambled for answers, a lone FBI agent (Jude Law), stationed in the sleepy, picturesque town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, came to believe the crimes were not the work of traditional, financially motivated criminals but a group of dangerous domestic terrorists, inspired by a radical, charismatic leader (Nicholas Hoult), plotting a devastating war against the federal government of the United States.

Opening in theaters December 25 is ‘Nosferatu,’ directed by Robert Eggers and starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.

    Initial Thoughts

Director and writer Robert Eggers has wanted to remake ‘Nosferatu’ even before his stunning debut, ‘The Witch,’ came out in 2016. The silent 1922 original from director F.W. Murnau is one of the landmarks of both horror cinema and German Expressionist film, while Werner Herzog’s 1979 version is both an update of the material and a tribute to the Murnau classic.

Now Eggers has delivered his interpretation of the material, which itself is an adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel ‘Dracula’ in everything but name (the short version: Murnau could not get the rights to the book from Stoker’s widow, so he changed all the names and filmed it anyway). Eggers, our reigning master of period horror thanks to the likes of ‘The Witch’ and ‘The Lighthouse’ (2019), has incorporated elements of both previous versions into his film, along with aspects of ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ (the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola movie) and even nods to other horror cornerstones like ‘The Exorcist’ and Mario Bava’s ‘Black Sabbath.’

Eggers’ dark fantasia may quickly become a modern horror classic in its own right: The macabre, surreal ‘Nosferatu’ is steeped in dread and a thick atmosphere of death and decay, featuring a terrifying monster – played by an unrecognizable Bill Skarsgård (Pennywise in ‘It’) – who proclaims that he is a primal force of evil (“I am an appetite, nothing more”) while emanating a despair and even loneliness that makes his corruption all the more palpable.

Set in 1838, ‘Nosferatu’ follows the basic plot that should be familiar to both readers of the original novel and generations of viewers who have watched cinematic variations on the tale, with a new wrinkle right from the onset: when we first meet the “melancholy” (as people suffering from depression and other clinical disorders were described back then) Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), she is a young woman plagued by terrible dreams and loneliness and desperate to make contact with something divine. Her slight touch of paranormal ability – branded “hysteria” – does indeed awaken something far, far away, but about as far from the angelic as one could imagine.

Years later, Ellen is married to up-and-coming estate agent Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) and has seemingly gotten control of her mental and emotional issues thanks to her newfound happiness. But dark thoughts begin to intrude when Thomas announces that at the behest of his employer, Herr Knock (Simon McBurney), he must travel from their home in Wisborg, Germany to the distant land of Transylvania, where he is to close a deal for an elderly but extremely wealthy count named Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) to purchase a ruined property in Wisborg that he intends to make his new home. Leaving Ellen in the care of their friends Friedrich and Anna Harding (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin), Thomas begins the long, arduous journey to Orlok’s castle – where he is met along the way by Romani who insist that he turn back at all costs.

Once at Orlok’s ancient, ominous abode – which seems to spread a literal blanket of decay over the land and everything around it – Thomas quickly realizes that there is something decidedly off about his host, who only appears at night. Orlok, of course, knows that Hutter is married to Ellen – the girl who cried out to him all those years ago – and luring Hutter to his castle while establishing himself in Wisborg is all part of Orlok’s plan to come to the “modern world” and claim her, spreading death and plague in his wake.

If there’s anything that slightly lets ‘Nosferatu’ down, it’s the fact that Eggers’ version – aside from the more explicitly perverse relationship between Ellen and Orlok – doesn’t hold many surprises. As fans of either previous version of ‘Nosferatu’ or many adaptations of ‘Dracula’ itself will know, this more or less follows Stoker’s time-tested narrative. Orlok imprisons and nearly kills Thomas before leaving for Wisborg on a doomed ship; his benefactor there, Knock (aka Renfield), arranges for his arrival while going insane; and as Thomas escapes and attempts to get home, a band of loyal friends, including the Hardings, Dr. Sievers (Ralph Ineson), and eventually the eccentric Dutch doctor/metaphysician Albin Von Franz (Willem Dafoe), join forces to protect Ellen against the peril coming for her and Wisborg, at great danger to themselves.

But while the story is familiar, Eggers drenches it in so much rich detail, thick atmosphere, and powerful malevolence that he perhaps creates the most immersive interpretation yet. And even though his Orlok/Dracula has moments where he is almost pitiable, this is perhaps the most purely monstrous version of the iconic character, an embodiment of evil and living death personified in one amazing shot of the shadow of his hand reaching across the darkened rooftops of Wisborg. “Nosferatu” and “Dracula” itself have always used their central character as a metaphor for many things, but the depravity and destruction he brings with him here are tangible like never before.

Also tangible is the time and place of Eggers’ tale, brought to life by his regular collaborators like production designer Craig Lathrop, DP Jarin Blaschke, and costume designer Linda Muir, who all bring an astonishing level of specificity and tactility to the darkened world of ‘Nosferatu.’ Blaschke in particular pays homage to the many versions of this tale that have come before – an eerie sequence in which Thomas walks through a dead forest as Orlok’s spectral coach approaches to pick him up could have been right out of the Murnau film – while creating a Gothic palette that’s wholly original to this movie.

    The Cast

With his filmography to date, Bill Skarsgård may become a modern Lon Chaney, the silent film star who specialized in grotesques and monsters. He draws upon both the Schreck and Kinski versions of Orlok, as well as Gary Oldman’s Count Dracula, yet provides a wholly new interpretation of the legendary vampire. Aided by incredible makeup from David White and Linda Muir’s costume, Orlok looks like a real 16th century Transylvania nobleman – albeit one that has been decomposing for centuries.

But all the makeup in the world could not do the job if Skarsgård himself didn’t fully inhabit the role, his blazing eyes and genuinely chilling voice delivering the immensity of Orlok’s depravity and even some of his self-pity and existential horror at his own existence. He, Eggers, White, and Muir have created a monster for the ages.

The other big story of this superb cast may be Lily-Rose Depp. Saddled previously with the HBO debacle ‘The Idol,’ Depp makes Ellen the driving force of the story, her unknowing attraction to the darkness battling with her yearning for a normal life and her love for Thomas. It’s that conflict within that makes Ellen come to life, the two sides to her personality also a metaphor for the women of the era – and many other eras – torn between knowing their “station” and forging ahead with lives of their own making. Depp finds both Ellen’s loving nature and her tragic inner self, as well as the darker aspects of her personality that are brought to bear by the presence of Orlok.

Nicholas Hoult’s Thomas is also given more depth here than the usual stalwart hero he’s portrayed as. Thomas starts out as a relative innocent, dedicated to providing for his wife and their life together, but his exposure to the corruption of Orlok changes him permanently. Hoult – who’s already having a hell of a year with ‘Juror #2’ and ‘The Order’ – delivers another solid performance as a man whose entire view of the world and what exists in it is upended with terrible results.

The other actors – Taylor-Johnson and Corrin as the loyal but increasingly frightened and exhausted Hardings, McBurney as the wildly demented Knock, Ineson as the rational Sievers, and of course Eggers regular Dafoe as the peculiar yet commanding Von Franz, round out an ensemble that does justice to each of their characters, all of them bringing an exceptional emotional and psychological commitment to the material.

Not only is ‘Nosferatu’ Robert Eggers’ most personal of his four films to date, a masterful retelling of a classic tale, and an achievement that secures his place among modern horror auteurs like Guillermo del Toro and Mike Flanagan, but it also resets the cinematic depiction of the vampire.

‘Nosferatu’ returns the monster to its ancient roots, particularly that of the Romanian strigoi and other manifestations in Eastern European folklore, shedding nearly all the modern romanticism of tales like ‘Twilight’ while retaining the creature’s symbolism as both a deliverer of death and a purveyor of primal, twisted urges. As a result, this ‘Nosferatu’ can stand proudly alongside its predecessors and may become a genre benchmark in its own right as time goes on.

‘Nosferatu’ receives 9 out of 10 stars.

If ‘Juror #2,’ the 40th film directed by Clint Eastwood, is indeed the 94-year-old screen legend’s final offering, it doesn’t play like the work of someone with one foot out the soundstage door. While it doesn’t make an airtight case for itself, ‘Juror #2’ is an absorbing courtroom thriller and moral melodrama, in which two men with everything to lose in a homicide case feel the screws tightening around them – but only one knows the truth.

While Eastwood has had his ups and downs with his last few films – ‘Cry Macho’ was thin at best, while ‘Richard Jewell’ was terrific and ‘The Mule’ was somewhere in between – ‘Juror #2’ is in many ways the filmmaker at his best, with sturdy, no-nonsense direction, rich cinematography (from Yves Bélanger), and a nuanced story brought to life by a stacked cast. But the script by Jonathan Abrams admittedly has some pretty large holes in it as well, and labors to gloss them over with varying degrees of success. That it still manages to be a gripping, old-fashioned courtroom potboiler is a testament to a crafty filmmaker who still knows how to tell a story efficiently.

“We’re only as sick as our secrets,” says a sponsor at the AA meeting attended by Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult), a journalist, recovering alcoholic and soon-to-be-dad who’s hoping to get out of jury duty in his mid-sized Georgia town so that he can be ready to help his wife Allison (Zoey Deutch) when their baby arrives. But Justin ends up being selected for what seems to be a cut-and-dried case: reformed drug dealer James Michael Sythe (Gabriel Basso) is accused of murdering his girlfriend Kendall (Francesca Eastwood) in a rage after she storms out of a bar on a rainy night after they have a fight.

Except that it turns out Justin himself has a whopper of a secret; without giving away too much, he realizes not long into the trial that he is connected to the case in a deeply troubling manner. How he ascertains this – and how his connection comes about in the first place – is the first spot where Jonathan Abrams’ screenplay strains credibility, especially as other key figures like prosecutor Faith Killebrew (Toni Collette) and public defender Eric Resnick (Chris Messina) seem to miss what is staring them right in the face.

But even with the script’s implausibilities (others of which come to the fore later as well), many more aspects of the film keep the viewer hooked and the drama moving forward. Drawing on elements of ‘Rashomon’ and, of course, ’12 Angry Men,’ Justin takes on the role of lone holdout, gradually chipping away at some of the other jurors’ initial impulse to immediately convict. One of those other jurors is Harold (J.K. Simmons), who has a secret of his own but also a burgeoning sense that not all is right with the case. He decides to look deeper on his own – although that leads to another of those pesky plot holes.

Nevertheless, the movie is never less than compelling, as Eastwood’s unobtrusive filmmaking and mostly uncluttered way with narrative keep the suspense and tension high. The film also touches on a number of issues, including the nature of truth, the requirements and morality of law enforcement, and the very concept of justice itself (“sometimes the truth isn’t justice,” intones someone near the end), although it never quite gives them their full day in court. This is a melodrama after all. And although the jury’s out on whether the ending works – it plays out in stages, almost a montage, instead of a cathartic climactic scene — the final open-ended image is a haunting one.

Nicholas Hoult – who’s set for major roles in ‘Nosferatu’ later this year and ‘Superman’ next summer – has been building an impressive body of work since we first saw him in ‘About a Boy.’ As a leading man here, he’s nothing short of terrific, believably portraying a young man, haunted by his own demons, who’s been putting his life in order and is now ready to do anything to protect what he’s built. He and Zoey Deutch have a nice, natural rhythm together as a married couple, and Deutch’s turn from chipper mom-to-be to a woman slowly realizing that the ground could abruptly slide out from under her is organically handled.

It’s a credit to wonderful actors like J.K. Simmons, Toni Collette, and Chris Messina that they can take some thinly-drawn characters and make them breathe. Simmons fares the best, as a man with a true moral compass, but he also sort of vanishes from the story long before it ends. Collette and Messina both draw sympathetic portraits of friends who are also opponents and understand each other’s motivations, although their lives seem confined to the courthouse and the local bar (a subplot about Collette running for district attorney seems tacked on as well). As for the rest of the jurors, only Cedric Yarbrough makes a lasting impression as Marcus. And Kiefer Sutherland is wasted as a lawyer whose only purpose is to provide two scenes’ worth of exposition for Hoult.

The greatest crime about ‘Juror #2’ is the way it’s coming out: Warner Bros. Pictures plans to open the film on no more than 50 screens, after initially earmarking it for a streaming debut on Max. It seems like an ignominious way to play off Clint Eastwood, whose career and accomplishments with the studio – both in terms of awards and box office – stretch back for decades. But it’s a different world now.

What makes it just as inexplicable is that ‘Juror #2,’ despite its flaws, is a fine film. Unlike some other veteran filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, who have recently attempted grand statements with very uneven success, Eastwood’s unfussy, straightforward movies mostly tend to hit their mark and deliver the kind of high-end, well-made adult drama that once would have packed auditoriums. It’s a shame that studio marketing departments seem no longer capable of presenting these sturdy, entertaining films to a public that might still enjoy them. If ‘Juror #2’ does end up being Clint Eastwood’s sign-off, then he’s guilty as hell of retiring in style.

    Preview:

    • James Gunn has marked the end of shooting for ‘Superman’.
    • David Corenswet plays the title role.
    • The movie will be in theaters on 11th July next year.

Having shot in Norway, Cleveland and Atlanta, writer/director James Gunn and his ‘Superman’ cast and crew have now completed filming on the superhero movie that Gunn intends –– cinematically, at least –– to kick off his vision for the DC movie universe going forward.

With David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Gunn has been busy making the movie under great scrutiny, his concept for Superman seen as partly defining the way ahead for DC on screens big and small.

    OT00arSyAacXCGscjvNND4

Gunn hasn’t been shy about sharing behind the scenes looks at making the movie and we’ve seen the first look at Corenswet in costume.

Now, though, barring any planned additional footage shoots, Gunn is headed into the post-production stage ahead of the movie’s release next year. We can likely expect at least the first teaser before the year is out.

“And that’s a wrap,” Gunn posted on Instagram about wrapping. “God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life.”

Little is truly known about the plotline at this point, but Gunn has been clear that he’s eschewing the usual exploding home planet Krypton/arrival in Smallville origin story (though those will likely be referenced) in favor of more of a workplace film with Clark showing up to work at the Planet, where Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) will already be an established reporting star.

Peter Safran, Gunn’s co-chief of DC Studios (and a producer on the movie) said this about the new movie during the duo’s big announcement about DC films and series going forward:

“It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”

    Who is appearing in ‘Superman’?

Alongside Corenswet and Brosnahan, there’s an eclectic, sprawling cast.

Also in the cast? Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardener), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) and María Gabriela de Faría (Angela Spica/The Engineer).

That’s the main ensemble; we can expect an appearance from Gunn’s brother Sean (a regular in his movies, who has played the likes of Kraglin and provided the on-set reference performance and voice for Rocket Raccoon in the ‘Guardians’ franchise) as the villainous Maxwell Lord.

Opening in theaters on May 24th is the new animated family film ‘The Garfield Movie,’ which stars Chris Pratt (‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’) as the voice of the title character and was directed by Mark Dindal (‘Chicken Little’).

The movie also features the voice work of Samuel L. Jackson (‘Secret Invasion’), Hannah Waddingham (‘The Fall Guy’), Ving Rhames (‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’), Nicholas Hoult (‘X-Men: First Class’), and Harvey Guillén (‘What We Do in the Shadows‘) as Odie.

‘The Garfield Movie’ is a surprisingly entertaining and funny family animated film that explores the character’s previously unknown family history and origin story. Samuel L. Jackson’s Vic, Garfield’s father, is a strong addition to the franchise’s group of characters and is a great foil for our beloved feline. Director Mark Dindal packs a lot of humor and heart into the film, which is basically a heist movie that also explores family and friendship.

    Script and Direction

Vic and Garfield in 'The Garfield Movie.'

The movie begins by reintroducing us to the lazy but lovable lasagna eating cat, Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt). We are also quickly introduced to his owner Jon Arbuckle (voiced by Nicholas Hoult) and his canine buddy Odie (voiced by Harvey Guillén) and learn how they all first met when Garfield was abandoned by his father, Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson).

Vic soon reappears in Garfield’s life and involves him and Odie in a heist plot to pay back a villainous Persian Cat named Jinx (voiced by Hannah Waddingham), who Vic is indebted to. Along the way, they meet a bull named Otto (voiced by Ving Rhames), who has been separated from his true love, and the father and son attempt to help him while trying to outsmart Jinx and ruin her evil plans. Eventually, Vic and his son are brought closer together by the events, while Garfield and Odie desperately try to return to their happy home with Jon.

Director by Mark Dindal delivers a fun and heartwarming film that not only reveals Garfield’s origin, but also explores the relationship between fathers and sons in a very interesting way. Focusing on Garfield’s personal history was a wise choice, as it has not been previously explored in any other incarnation of the character. The movie is also an entertaining heist film and builds on the exploration of the characters throughout.

While the animation is not anything too groundbreaking, it does work well for the material and has a similar look to the comic strip cartoons where the character originated. The movie is clearly designed for a younger audience as some of the jokes are rather immature, but they still fit the character and there is enough nostalgia, action and emotion for an older audience.

Following in the footsteps of Lorenzo Music (‘Here Comes Garfield’) and Bill Murray (‘Garfield’), Chris Pratt channels his ‘Parks and Recreation’ character to deliver a lazy, sarcastic performance worthy of the cartoon cat. Pratt’s humor is also on display, and he has great chemistry with Samuel L. Jackson. In fact, the exploration of Garfield and Vic’s estranged relationship is at the heart of the movie, and Pratt delivers the emotion when needed.

    The Supporting Cast

Of the supporting voice cast, Samuel L. Jackson is the standout as Garfield’s estranged father, Vic. Jackson’s famous cool voice lends itself perfectly to the character, and he works well with Pratt’s laidback performance. Also, a standout is Hannah Waddingham as the voice of Jinx, and the actresses own offscreen persona plays well into the over-the-top villainous feline character. Ving Rhames is also a great addition to the voice cast as his unique deep voice lends itself to Otto the bull quite well.

Nicholas Hoult and Harvey Guillén are fine as Jon and Odie, respectively, but are at times shortchanged by the script, particularly Hoult. Also worth mentioning is a cameo by the very recognizable voice of Snoop Dogg, who plays a one-eyed cat.

    Final Thoughts

While nostalgia for the beloved cartoon cat carries the film far, it’s his origin story, the heist plot, and exploring the relationship between fathers and sons that makes the new movie worth watching. The movie’s humor is mostly skewed towards kids, and some juvenile jokes may not land with an older audience, but adults will be able to latch on to some of the larger ideas in the movie and should find it enjoyable anyways. Chris Pratt carries the mantel of Garfield well, and Samuel L. Jackson’s Vic is a great addition to the overall franchise.

‘The Garfield Movie’ receives 7 out or 10 stars.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Pratt about his work on ‘The Garfield Movie’, what fans can expect from the film, his approach to voicing the iconic cat, and telling Garfield’s origin story.

Moviefone: To begin with, what would you say to audience members sitting down in a theater to prepare them for the theatrical experience they are about to have?

Chris Pratt: Oh, they’re already in the theater? I’d say turn your phones off, get your popcorn, sit back and relax. You thought you knew Garfield? You didn’t know nothing yet. That’s what I would say, something like that. But to those who are thinking of going to the movies, I would say get your tickets now, because they’re going to sell out. May 24th don’t miss it!

MF: You are following in the footsteps of Lorenzo Music and Bill Murray, who have both voiced this role. What does it mean to you personally to get a chance to put your own spin on an iconic character like Garfield?

CP: Man, I’m grateful. This is an entire collaborative effort by a great production team and a wonderful director who had been working on this for years before I jumped on board. So really, I was just honored and blessed that they thought the voice of the guy from ‘Parks and Rec’ was the voice of this cat. That’s what they told me. He said, “I’ve been working on this for years. I keep hearing your voice coming out of this cat in my head. That’s what I want. You’ve got a natural, lazy, sarcastic tone to your voice. I want that voice.” I was like, “Well, that’s cool. Because I know the guy who has that voice, and he could do it for you. I’ve been working on this voice for my whole life, apparently.” So, it was nice. In a way it kind of took the pressure off because I knew what they wanted, and only I could give it to them. It was just something organic and natural, my own breath, my own voice, my own spirit for this character. I feel blessed.

Chris Pratt as the voice of Garfield in 'The Garfield Movie'.

MF: Can you talk about your approach to the character? Did you relate to him right away?

CP: Yeah, early on. There are elements in my life that make me feel like Garfield now. I’m very pampered. I’m a Hollywood guy. There was a certain affectation in the voice which was kind of closer to what a person sounds like when they’re about to yawn, and I just thought that was kind of something to work in. That’s where I was feeling like a lot of times the voice would come from, and just trusting the director and knowing that we had a great script. Once the action took over, it was about a character that was on an adventure. So, it’s like the sleepiness and the laziness that really works for the character who’s being pampered and who’s living a lazy life. But when you’re on the run and you’re in a heist movie, you must shift gears and become a character on an action adventure. Because suddenly, this cat that’s typically sarcastic and a little bit of a biting, comedic laziness, can’t be sarcastic and lazy, he must be on the road. Once you get clipping along, that’s what the movie becomes.

Odie, Vic and Garfield in 'The Garfield Movie'.
(L to R) Odie, Vic and Garfield in ‘The Garfield Movie’. Photo: DNEG Animation. Copyright: © 2023 Project G Productions, LLC.

MF: Finally, we got to see Garfield’s origin story in this movie, and meet his father, Vic. Can you talk a little bit about that and Garfield’s relationship with Vic?

CP: It’s a great relationship. Samuel L. Jackson voices Vic beautifully. Vic is this streetwise, scruffy, outdoor cat, and he’s kind of on the run. Garfield is your world-famous lasagna-loving, Monday-hating, sarcastic, indoor-pampered pet. Vic takes him on this epic outdoor adventure along with Odie, and they basically are enlisted in this really high-stakes and super-funny heist scenario. So that’s the movie. That’s the relationship. The relationship is one of a father who his son believed abandoned him in an alley one day, and you see that from the trailer. You see that in the opening scene of the movie that he’s got an issue with this guy Vic who claims to be his dad, because his dad left him in an alley. So, healing that relationship and seeing the father try to teach this cat some valuable tricks of the trade, some hard knocks lessons on how to be an outdoor cat, is some of the fun in the movie.

Given the intense scrutiny of James Gunn’s new ‘Superman’ film –– which, if not already burdened enough by having to launch the latest iteration of the DC superhero figurehead also has to cinematically kickstart the filmmaker’s vision for the overall DC movie and TV universe –– it’s hardly surprising that he chose to get out ahead of those wanting to snap a paparazzi shot of new star David Corenswet in his Superman suit.

In a fun twist from the usual Super-introduction, the shot appears to show Corenswet’s Clark Kent calmly pulling on one of his suit’s boots instead of the standard, all-action first look. And that’s despite some giant threat seemingly outside the window, looming over Metropolis. But we’ll say this: Corenswet certainly looks the part, though some fans are certainly drawing comparisons to Henry Cavill’s ‘Man of Steel’ look.

Filming has been underway on the movie for a couple of months now, with production happening in Norway for some Fortress of Solitude location work and its homebase of Atlanta.

And though Gunn has previously said that he won’t necessarily be diving back into all the iconic origin narrative points of Clark Kent/Superman’s story, it does appear there is room for both of his parents to appear.

The Wrap reports that Pruitt Taylor Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent, the farmer who, with wife Martha, discovers an infant Kal El in a crashed spaceship and adopts him as their own, raising Clark to be a good man who channels his parents’ morals when he discovers his powers.

In a separate story, the outlet has revealed that Neva Howell will play Martha. Jonathan in particular tends to be a tragic figure, the character dying when Clark is a young man. Whether that holds true here (or if he’s only seen in flashback) remains to be seen.

And finally, Milly Alcock is likely to have a cameo as Kara/Supergirl, Superman’s cousin, ahead of her own movie debut.
