    • A limited series based on Madonna’s life is in the works.
    • Madonna herself is involved.
    • ‘Stranger Things’ Shawn Levy is also involved.

Madonna certainly has had the sort of life and career you’d think companies would be scrambling to bring to screens.

And indeed, in 2020, she began hinting that she had a new cinematic idea brewing, including cryptic messages to ‘Juno’ writer Diablo Cody about collaborating on something.

That turned into an official Madonna biopic for Universal, which she announced she would co-write with Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson.

The search began for someone to play Madonna, one that included the likes of Florence Pugh, ‘Euphoria’s Alexa Demie and Odessa Young floated alongside singers including Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira..

Yet the search seemed to end when Julia Garner  was offered the lead.

Here’s what Madonna said at the time:

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world. The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

Still, there seemed to be very little forward movement, and in early 2023, word began to trickle out that the movie was on hold, possibly indefinitely.

Now, though, after some comments a while ago from the musician herself that she was looking to switch tracks and instead bring her story to life as a TV show, Deadline brings word that she’s collaborating with prolific producer/filmmaker Shawn Levy to make a limited series for Netflix.

Levy, of course, has a wealth of credits to his name, including several projects for Netflix such as mammoth hit ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The Adam Project.’ And not forgetting his most recent theatrical effort, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which made more than $1.33 billion dollars at the box office after its release last year.

Since Madonna Louise Ciccone dropped out of college and got on a plane for the first time in her life to pursue a career in music and dance in New York with $35 in her pocket, the Michigan native has defied expectations.

Certified the best-selling female music artist in history, Madonna has sold 400 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, and has long been known someone who can endlessly evolve her style and vibe to whatever is in vogue.

Her impact on society and pop culture have gone beyond her influence in the music industry as a revolutionary pop star who challenged sexism to redefine what it means to be a powerful woman in the field, and her movie career.

Fearless and provocative, the “Like a Virgin” singer has been outspoken on women’s rights and sexuality, pushing boundaries and challenging societal norms, and a strong advocate of the LGBTQ community.

While the show has yet to reach the casting stage, Julia Garner certainly has a leg up in more than one regard.

Deadline reports that Garner may well cross from the movie version into this new project (but has yet to be officially confirmed or indeed make a deal to do so, which means it’s up to the vagaries of business and scheduling).

But as recently as this year’s Vanity Fair Oscar party, Garner was dropping hints on social media:

On the Netflix front, Garner is herself a regular –– she broke out with her role on ‘Ozark’ and appeared in con artist limited series ‘Inventing Anna.’

She’s working with the streaming service again, signing on to play the female lead and executive produce a limited series about the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX and the relationship between FTX co-founder and chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried and his girlfriend and business associate Caroline Ellison (the role she would take).

When will the Madonna series be on screens?

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here –– this show isn’t moving quicker than a ray of light at this point; it’s still at an early stage.

Netflix has yet to even confirm any of Deadline’s story (which assumes the deals are still being hammered out), so right now this is more a development than an actual show. And given how the proposed movie has yet to surface, the show is far from a certainty. Still, we won’t count out anything that has Levy attached…

  • New ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ Posters Are a Seasonal Delight

We’re now just over a month away from the release of “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” and Netflix is rewarding fans for their patience by releasing four brand new posters for the revival series.

The one-sheets celebrate the new episodes’ seasonal theme, with each one representing a specific season/episode: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) appear on each poster, smiling and posing with season-appropriate props, including snowflakes, bouquets of flowers, sparklers and a flag, and falling leaves. (You can probably figure out which posted corresponds to which episode based on those items.)

They’re striking, beautiful images that perfectly capture the excitement that this revival has generated, and the essence of the series overall. And they’re in keeping with what we’ve seen so far from “A Year in the Life,” staying true to the warm, witty tone that made the original series run such a beloved fan favorite (and made it such a no-brainer decision for Netflix to bring it back from the dead after a nearly decade-long absence).

Of course, we know that it’s not all fun and games with the revival, with the death of Richard (the late Edward Herrmann) hanging over the series, and informing some big life decisions on the part of Lorelai, Rory, and Emily (Kelly Bishop). How our “Girls” handle that loss will no doubt be bittersweet, but then again, moments of poignancy are also a classic “Gilmore” trope, too.

  • Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ Spinoff Series Ordered by Netflix

the punisher, punisher, marvel, netflix, jon bernthal, spinoffAfter the successful introduction of the character in season two of “Daredevil,” Netflix is once again expanding its Marvel offerings by ordering a spinoff series featuring The Punisher.

Marvel and Netflix made the announcement official on Friday morning, following a report from Entertainment Weekly revealing the news. The “Punisher” series will star Jon Bernthal, reprising his “Daredevil” role.

Rumors of a standalone “Punisher” series swirled earlier this year, though at the time, Marvel and Netflix declined comment on the issue. But it seems that fans really responded to the character, a military veteran out for vengeance.

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, in a statement. “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”

“The Punisher” will be the sixth Marvel series in the ongoing collaboration between the studio and Netflix, following “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” the upcoming “Luke Cage,” and the in-development “Iron Fist” and team-up series “The Defenders.” According to EW, it’s unknown at this point if The Punisher will also pop up in that latter show, but it’s a strong possibility.

  • The New ‘Fuller House’ Logo Looks Awfully Familiar

fuller house, fuller house logoNetflix released the new, official logo for “Fuller House” this week, and fans of “Full House” will notice that it looks pretty familiar.

Designers clearly wanted to pay homage to the original show with this logo, and thus, it looks almost identical to the original “Full House” logo, down to the font, color, and angle of the letters. Netflix’s reaction to this new nameplate also happens to be familiar, and we concur: Have mercy!

While critics might sneer that the logo is as unoriginal as the show itself, we like that the series is taking great strides to be as faithful to the first show as possible. After all, Netflix chose to revive the property for a reason, and fans of the original will surely appreciate even this small example of attention to detail.

“Fuller House” reunites the Tanner clan for a new generation of gentle family life lessons, this time led by D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure) as a recently-widowed mother of three (a slightly less depressing backstory than the original plan for her character). The series pilot will serve as a “Full House” reunion show, with (most of) the entire extended clan set to return, including Bob Saget, John Stamos, Lori Loughlin, Dave Coulier, Andrea Barber, and Jodi Sweetin.

“Fuller House” is set to debut sometime in 2016.

  • ‘The Interview’ Is Coming to Netflix Streaming on January 24

Fresh off its huge haul from online sales, “The Interview” is making its Netflix streaming debut.

The Sony comedy, which set off a worldwide firestorm after the studio briefly cancelled its release following threats of violence from alleged North Korean hackers, will now be available to stream on Netflix starting on January 24.

“We are thrilled to offer exclusively the controversial comedy, ‘The Interview,’ to our US and Canadian members,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in a statement.

“The Interview,” starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, has continued to rake in the dough in digital sales since it debuted in limited theatrical release and on VOD simultaneously on Christmas Day. The flick has been a huge hit online and through cable and satellite services, where it’s grossed more than $40 million; it’s made about $6 million in box office gross.

While theater owners, who dropped the film following the announcement of the VOD strategy and under pressure from the hackers’ threats, warned that Sony could lose up to $30 million on the flick, the studio must have made up for that with this Netflix deal. No information about how much the streaming service paid, or how long the film will be on the service, was announced.
