Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and why you wanted to play this character?

Joel Edgerton: I realized that every time I get a script, a lot of the choices are made by whatever’s available to me. Then what I choose to say yes or no to is that there’s a lot of things that come my way that are the opposite of this film, which ask me to be heroic. I’m like, “Oh, that’s going to take a lot of acting, the idea of being a superhero,” and I don’t look down on those movies. It’s more like I sometimes read them and think, how do I plug into this? How am I going to perform this authentically? What I love about ‘Train Dreams’ is that it’s not the typical story because it puts an ordinary man in the center of a story and reminds us that an ordinary life can be really elevated, majestic, and special. That just moving through life is epic, and I know how to plug into that. I’m 51 now, and I have two young kids, and I’m married, and I’m always questioning what’s important enough to go away from my family for work. There are so many ingredients in Robert that I’ve just basically grown into right now in my life. So, I felt like it was a much more me experience, this film than if I were to presume to win a battle, or invent some technology, or save the planet.

MF: Finally, can you talk about shooting on location and how that helped to inform your performance?

JE: I think audiences, when they look at nature, there’s a reason why I think a lot of the screensavers on the big plasma screens are these epic canyons and glaciers. I think human beings forget we’re part of the planet. I think we forget that we really are just an animal. We’re an animal that can do cool stuff. We can invent helicopters and AI, but we’re still animals. I think when we see nature, it’s like our ears prick up and we are like a dog watching another dog on screen. We’re like, “Wow, here’s nature. We belong to nature.” So, it feels good to shoot out there. It requires a different level of focus and hard work. The equipment being brought in and making sure that, particularly for us, we didn’t go in there and ruin a forest by dragging in our equipment, but it feels good. It felt good the way Clint established an environment that wasn’t just shooting in one direction and there was a freeway behind us. We could move in any direction. The cabin was built to exist and operate as if it was truly a cabin from that era. It really helped as an actor to, again, I use the phrase plug in, to really be able to dive into that and exist in it.

    • Noah Centineo may join the live-action ‘Gundam’ movie.
    • Sydney Sweeney is already attached.
    • Jim Mickle is aboard to direct.

We brought news back in April that Sydney Sweeney was in talks to star in a live-action version of the ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ anime franchise that Legendary was busy building.

It would seem she’s attached, and now Deadline has learned that ‘The Recruit’s Noah Centineo is in talks to join her.

One of the most revered animé, ‘Gundam’ is thought of as the ‘Star Wars’ or Marvel Universe of Japan, and is the pioneer of the mecha genre of IP.

Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the ‘Gundam’ franchise spans 83 animated series and movies. Its toy and retail business are huge, with the various products and projects generating over $600 million annually.

The original anime, 1979 series ‘Mobile Suit Gundam,’ is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies.

Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. The battles in the story are fought by the characters piloting robots known as mobile suits.

Part of the mecha genre, the sci-fi subgenre that centers on robots in combat (and usually they are giant robots), it veered from the formula followed by its mecha predecessors in a manner that added dramatic new tones and textures to the genre.

Previously, the giant robots in mecha stories were presented as almost magical devices with celebrity pilots who operated them via remote control or command. Tomino found those Aladdin-with-a-robot tales flimsy so he re-envisioned them as colossal weapons at the center of a complex military epic.

The giant robots, like Flying Fortress, had crews with ace pilots and everyman mechanics, which lent new perspectives, pathos, and battlefield energy to the saga and then to its genre.

What has happened with the ‘Gundam’ movie so far?

Back in 2019, we learned that ‘Y: The Last Man,’ ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘Runaways’ comic book creator Brian K. Vaughan (who has worked on the TV likes of ‘Lost’ and shows spawned from his titles) was hired to start work on a screenplay for Legendary’s live-action take on the ‘Gundam’ adventures –– the first to move it from the animated sphere.

That was followed in 2021 by word that ‘Kong: Skull Island’ director Jordan Vogt-Roberts would be calling the shots on the new movie, which had found a home at Netflix.

With Sweeney seemingly aboard and Centineo circling, the star power is well and truly locked down. This one should be shooting next year if all goes well.

  • ‘Jay Kelly’ Exclusive Interview: George Clooney

Opening in theaters on November 14th before premiering on Netflix December 5th is the new comedy-drama ‘Jay Kelly’ from director Noah Baumbach (‘Marriage Story’), which stars George Clooney (‘Michael Clayton’), Adam Sandler (‘Uncut Gems’) and Laura Dern (‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of sitting down in-person with Oscar winner George Clooney to talk about his work on ‘Jay Kelly’, why he signed on to the project before reading the script, if he could relate to the character, why he wanted to work with Adam Sandler, and what he learned from collaborating with director Noah Baumbach.

Moviefone: To begin with, I heard that you signed on to this project before reading the script because you were so excited to work with Adam Sandler and director Noah Baumbach. Can you talk about that, and have you ever done that before?

George Clooney: Yeah. I got a call, I was doing ‘Out of Sight’, and I got a call from the Coen brothers. They said, “We’re going to send you a script if you want to do it.” I said, “I’m going to do it,” before (I read it). It was ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ So, I’ve had a couple of times. There are directors in our business that you want to work with, and you would work with under any circumstances. I’d do the same thing with Alexander Payne if he called me or (Steven) Soderbergh obviously, and Alfonso Cuarón, some directors I’ve been very lucky to work with. Jason Reitman is a friend. But then I read it, and I thought, “Well, this is a really exciting project to do.” I know it sounds unusual to say but there aren’t that many great scripts. There aren’t that many great projects that you get to be a part of. When you get older, the parts become less and less. So, to be 64 years old and have somebody bring a script and a role like this, I just feel very lucky.

MF: I’ve also heard you say that when you did read the screenplay, you didn’t relate to your character. What did you mean by that and as an actor, is it better to not relate to the character because it gives you more objectivity in the performance?

GC: Well, I think you must find a way to relate. When I see the movie, I get why people go, “Oh, there’s a lot of similarity.” But when I read it, this character, he’s a guy who lives with just regret. He lives with all these things, these roads he didn’t travel, these things that he missed in life. I feel as if, for me, in general, although there’s always regret, it doesn’t fill my days and nights. When you get to the fork in the road, I’ve tended to take the more difficult fork. I’ve felt that, although I failed, which you can live with failure, it’s much easier to live with failure than it is to live with regret. So, when I read the script, it didn’t dawn on me that that it could be who I was. It just dawned on me that I was interested in playing a guy who didn’t take those turns.

MF: I know that you’ve been friends with Adam Sandler for a long time, what was it like to finally work with him on this film?

GC: Well, Adam’s a wonderful actor. That’s what sometimes people forget because he does broad comedies too and does stand-up and things. So, sometimes it gets lost in the idea that he really is a beautiful actor, and we’ve been friends for 30 years. I knew he’d be great in the part, and then the minute we got on the set, it was easy. The rehearsal process was fun. There’s a certain amount of confidence in actors, particularly of a certain age, when they’re not trying to own every scene. They’re kind of actively trying to give it to the other person. Adam and I felt that we were both going, “Oh, you get that. You take that.” There’s a kindness to that, that comes off, I think, on screen.

MF: Finally, what did you learn from watching the way Noah Baumbach makes movies that you might want to adopt yourself the next time you direct a film?

GC: Well, that’s an interesting question. For the most part, the directors that I’ve worked with don’t rehearse. They don’t believe in it. The Coen brothers don’t really rehearse, and Soderbergh doesn’t rehearse. They kind of feel like it’s all going to happen, and I’ve always worked that way as a director. I was resistant to rehearsing because I’m going to work whatever way the director wants. I think rehearsal is an interesting thing, particularly on a film that’s so deeply designed into performances. So, I think rehearsal was an interesting thing to watch and to pay attention to, and maybe something that can be more applied as time goes on.

In theaters on limited release from November 26 before heading to Netflix on December 12 is ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,’ the third in director Rian Johnson’s compelling mystery movie series.

Back as usual is Daniel Craig (‘Knives Out’), once more playing smart detective Benoit Blanc, joined by a new ensemble that includes Josh O’Connor (‘Challengers’), Josh Brolin (‘No Country for Old Men’), Glenn Close (‘Fatal Attraction’), Andrew Scott (‘All of Us Strangers’), Cailee Spaeny (‘Alien: Romulus’), Kerry Washington (‘Ray’) and Jeremy Renner (‘The Hurt Locker’).

Writer/director Rian Johnson breathed fresh, sharply-written life into the mystery genre with 2019’s ‘Knives Out.’ And if ‘Glass Onion’ in 2022 was a seemingly lesser (if still entertaining) follow-up, it’s relief to report that third outing ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ has much more in common –– especially in terms of quality character work and central crime –– with the first movie.

    Script and Direction

Johnson had always intended to make more movies featuring quirky, charismatic sleuth Benoit Blanc and a healthy deal from Netflix means we now have the third.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is a considerable step up from the second film, rivalling the original for how it weaves and then unravels its mystery. Part of the advantage is keeping Craig’s Blanc out of the story initially to give the other characters time to breathe. He still gets plenty of superb moments, but the ensemble as a whole has the space it needs to work.

Johnson has also made a beautiful-looking film, using the gloomy upstate New York setting (albeit filmed in the UK) to really enhance the storytelling.

    Cast and Performances

Craig is a natural as Blanc at this point, and the faith-wrangling storyline really gives him something to chew on. But praise also to Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Thomas Haden Church and Glenn Close in particular, who are all fantastic.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is certainly one of the best mystery movies to be released in the last couple of years, and happily stands alongside the first movie while nodding to its inspirations.

What’s the story of ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’?

When young priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor) is sent to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), it’s clear that all is not well in the pews.

After a sudden and seemingly impossible murder rocks the town, the lack of an obvious suspect prompts local police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) to join forces with renowned detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.

    1) Joel Edgerton Says It Was Important For Robert & Gladys’ Relationship To Feel Real

Robert and Gladys’ relationship is at the center of ‘Train Dreams’. Star Joel Edgerton reveals that it was very important to him to make that relationship feel real and vulnerable.

Joel Edgerton: I’m glad that we had this experience together in this film and had the chance to create a relationship. Clint’s script was beautiful. I think we all were so drawn to what was on the page. Clint is so collaborative too and very intentional and deliberate but also very open to discussing how are we able to build this relationship that was the heart of the film but wasn’t just a dimension that was purely romance. This is frontier life, a homestead. A life that wasn’t just about love. It had to have a tapestry of many things: domestic life, tension, confusion about the future, complicity, and the beauty and the fumbling about being new parents, all woven into a handful of certain moments that created this perception and investment for an audience.

    2) Felicity Jones Says ‘Train Dreams’ Is About The Struggle Of A Small Family

When asked to explain what drew her to the film, Felicity Jones reveals that it really is about the struggle of a family.

Felicity Jones: At the heart of it, so much of the film is about this struggle of this little family. They’re in difficult circumstances. They’re struggling to make ends meet. As Joel said, they’re in Frontierland. They’re in this extreme environment and they’re having to make it work as as best they can and part of the reason that they can make it work is obviously the love that they have for each other, but alongside that they have to have an incredible fortitude, and they have to hunt and shoot and fish and and make it work as best they can. What so much of the film about is in life, when you go through it or look back on it, what you get is not one continuous period of happiness, it’s fleeting.

    3) William H. Macy Loves A Lot About His ‘Train Dreams’ Character, Arn

William H. Macy says that he was immediately drawn to his character, Arn, after asked if he relates to him at all.

William H. Macy: We’re the same age. People have regrets, as do I. Arn, he has regrets, but he’s got his eye on the future. I just love the guy. I just love his character. He’s a loner and yet he’s so gregarious. I love his philosophizing. I love how clever he is at getting out of work. I saw that character and immediately I wanted to play him. I had a really clear picture of how to play. It was a marriage made in heaven, it really was.

    4) Kerry Condon Says Her Character Was Extremely Well Written For Such A Small Character

Kerry Condon’s character, Claire Thompson, might only be in ‘Train Dreams’ a short while, but she is extremely memorable and plays an important role. Kerry Condon believes this is because she is so well-written.

Kerry Condon:  A lot of it was on the page. It was such a well-written character for such a small character which really makes me think that it’s a good script when the little parts are really well drawn out. In it, she says, or it says in the voice of her, she was a nurse in the war. That influenced me so much because then she would have seen so much trauma and there would have been a nurturing aspect to her. So he would feel relaxed around her if she was a nurse. That energy, those people who have those jobs, you feel at ease with them, so that informed a lot of Claire for me.

    5) Joel Edgerton Was Concerned About Being Able To Keep A Lid On His Emotions When Filming ‘Train Dreams’

Robert Grainer experiences great loss in ‘Train Dreams’. When talking about channeling that from his own experiences and fears, Joel Edgerton admits his biggest concern was being able to keep a lid on his emotions in a way that felt true to the character.

Joel Edgerton: My ability to offer myself up to [director Clint Bentley] as a as a father and as a husband and as somebody who is terrified of such a thing, if anything, made me suitable to give myself over. The only fear, on an actorly level, was trying to make sure to keep a lid on those kind of feelings knowing that Robert is somebody who wouldn’t allow himself to show too much until somebody’s able to pull a feeling of his own complicity in the situation out. I can only hope that anyone who does experience loss is able to detach their own, in the good sense of the word, ego from any kind of responsibility. As irrational as that can be sometimes, we do feel those things.

What is the plot of ‘Train Dreams’?

Based on the beloved novella by Denis Johnson, Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier, whose life unfolds during an era of unprecedented change in early 20th century America. Orphaned at a young age, Robert grows into adulthood among the towering forests of the Pacific Northwest, where he helps expand the nation’s railroad empire alongside men as unforgettable as the landscapes they inhabit. After a tender courtship, he marries Gladys and they build a home together, though his work often takes him far from her and their young daughter. When his life takes an unexpected turn, Robert finds beauty, brutality and newfound meaning for the forests and trees he has felled.

    1) Simu Liu Says His Character Is Just A Big Kid At Heart

When asked about taking inspiration from any of the dads in his life, Simu Liu admits that he did not, at least not consciously. However, he was very inspired by the fact that his character is just a big kid at heart.

Simu Liu: In approaching this character of Dad, it’s funny, because Dad in this film, he is actually such a kid on the inside. And so much so that I almost feel like he’s like actively resisting this idea of growing up. Because he’s very passionate about his music career. I think he’s at a place where he doesn’t want to let it go. He’s being faced with this pressure to kind of be realistic and face reality and accept responsibility for the whole family. I think for him, it’s like, well, if I give up on my dreams, what kind of example am I setting for the kids? That’s where I approached from. Where Dad is actually not very dad-like at all. I really wanted to bring out his child-like quality.

    2) Cristin Milioti Says The Process Of Making An Animated Film Is Extremely Interesting

Cristin Milioti attends Netflix's 'In Your Dreams' premiere on October 28, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix.
Cristin Milioti attends Netflix’s ‘In Your Dreams’ premiere on October 28, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix.

Cristin Milioti recalls the process of recording for the voice of Mom in ‘In Your Dreams’, saying that it is very different than working on a live-action project.

Cristin Milioti: The way an animated film is made, it’s so many years. And it’s such an interesting process. You record something and then you don’t return to it for four or five months. You have to like get back into that mind frame of how did we calibrate it? Oh, we went to a seven last time, this should be at a five now. It’s constantly changing. Which is so cool and so rare. You would never get to do that, obviously, on a live action thing. The rewarding part, I feel like is hopefully, any kids or adults that are dealing with like a nuanced situation at home feel comforted as well as entertained.

    3) Craig Robinson Loved Bringing Humor and Heart To Baloney Tony

Craig Robinson attends Netflix's 'In Your Dreams' premiere on October 28, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix.
Craig Robinson attends Netflix’s ‘In Your Dreams’ premiere on October 28, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix.

Baloney Tony is Elliot’s stuffed giraffe and while he does not appear in the movie a lot, he is the heart of the story. Craig Robinson reveals that he had a lot of fun bringing both sides to Baloney Tony, but admits that the heart came as a surprise.

Craig Robinson: It came as a surprise. I did not know. We found everything in the room. It’s good to hear that that’s what came across, but no, I didn’t go in thinking, oh man, yeah, I gotta bring that heart. We just kind of rolled it out there.

    4) Alex Woo Channeled A Very Personal Story When Writing ‘In Your Dreams’

Alex Woo attends Netflix's 'In Your Dreams' premiere on October 28, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix.
Alex Woo attends Netflix’s ‘In Your Dreams’ premiere on October 28, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix.

Alex Woo: The challenge with a movie about dreams is that anything can happen. And when anything can happen nothing really means anything. So, we had to find a way to ground it with a real-world, human story. And that’s when I thought about this thing that happened to me when I was maybe six or seven years old. I woke up one morning and I found my mom at the front door with her bags packed. She had to sort of gently explain to me and my brother that she was going away for a little while. And she had to figure things out for herself and her family. It was really scary for us. This movie is very much about me reconciling and dealing with the fact that life is not perfect. And that there’s a lot of messiness in life. But there’s also a beauty in that. So, it’s a combination of this really intimate, personal story with this big, adventurous, fantastical, spectacular world of dreams.

    5) Simu Liu Reveals That A Lot Of Things Changed From When He First Signed On

‘In Your Dreams’ went through a lot of changes, even after Simu Liu started recording his lines. He admits that even the ending changed, and more than once.

Simu Liu: We signed on four years ago. And then we come in and we’re not recording our lines with anybody. The lines are changing. The scenes are changing. The ending of this movie changed, at least for us, at least four or five times over the course of the entire process. I think our names changed. Our band name changed. Our kids didn’t change, though. Our kids were always amazing.

You might be more used to hearing about the Sandman –– particularly on Netflix –– via the work of a certain controversial author. But the concept of the mythological figure who can weave dreams has been used in stories for centuries, which also presents something of a challenge when someone wants to use it.

Fortunately in the case of Netflix’s new animated charmer ‘In Your Dreams’, it’s a recipe for wild adventures, silly characters and a storyline that only occasionally dips into treacly sentiment.

    Script and Direction

A scene from 'In Your Dreams'. Photo: Netflix © 2025.
A scene from ‘In Your Dreams’. Photo: Netflix © 2025.

Director Alex Woo (‘Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher’) and co-director Erik Benson (‘Toy Story 4’) worked alongside Stanley Moore (‘Finding Dory’) and Rita Hsiao (‘Mulan’) to crack the story before the two main filmmakers wrote the script.

While it runs on some fairly predictable lines –– tensions between siblings, potential family ruptures as successful mother and slacker musician father face a crossroads –– ‘In Your Dreams’ still manages to find new things to say on the subjects.

The highlights, though, are certainly the surrealistic worlds within dreams and the characters lurking within, including talking breakfast food, a nightmarish threat and one very talkative stuffed toy.

Woo and Benson shake off an initially odd-looking facial structure for the human characters in an introductory flashback, fashioning appealing leads and even tapping into anime for one effective moment of the kids realizing their powers within the dreamscape.

Hoang-Rappaport and Janssen do solid work as the leads, and you’re happy to follow them along this journey. While Liu and Milioti naturally have less to do (until later in the movie), they’re both good.

Robinson’s giraffe-like Baloney Tony (a toy from the real world who finds his voice in dreams) is the stand-out: a funny, sometimes cowardly type who comes through in the end.

George Clooney admits that he was so excited to get to work with Adam Sandler that he was already planning to do ‘Jay Kelly’ before even reading the script.

George Clooney: I got a call that said that Noah’s gonna do a film with Adam Sandler and was I interested. And I said, “Yeah, I’ll do it.” And they said, “Do you wanna read the script?” I said, “Well, yes, I’ll read the script, but I’m gonna do it.” Because I knew, the track record of Noah and I really wanted to work with Adam. And then I read the script and I couldn’t believe my luck. I thought this was such a beautiful part. It’s funny, a lot of people have come up to me and said, it’s like you are playing yourself. It’s like, well, I don’t have the regrets that this guy has. My kids still like me. They’re eight. That might change. But at this point, they still like me. All the people that I’ve worked with, I still work with. I have a very different life than this guy. So, I didn’t really relate to him.

    2) Adam Sandler Explains How He Was Able To Use Inspiration From His Management Team To Shape His Character

Adam Sandler plays Jay Kelly’s manager in the film, and while he was sure to craft his own character, he did take a bit of inspiration from his team.

Adam Sandler: We have teams. We are on the other side of it. You do see how much work goes into what they’re doing. And my favorite line, I said this on our side is, “You’re Jay Kelly, but I’m Jay Kelly, too.” I feel like our teams feel the same way. My character, it was very easy to love George ‘cause he’s just a great person, a great man to be around, very giving man. And I do, when he’s talking, I look at him and I say, wow, I could listen to him all day. I feel like it was just nice. My character loved the person like our teams they truly love us. And they believe in what we’re going after and the ups and they feel the downs. That’s what we were going after.

    3) Noah Baumbach Says ‘Jay Kelly’ Is About The Price Of Fame & Regrets

When asked about what ‘Jay Kelly’ means to him, director Noah Baumbach says it is about the realization that we only have one life, and we should do our very best with it.

Noah Baumbach: This movie is about, I think, at a certain point in life, discovering that, I mean, it’s glaringly obvious and shocking at the same time, realization that this is the only time we’re gonna do this. I think that’s what Jay comes to in some crooked, wild way in this movie, which is, I don’t have another one of these and these are the choices I’ve made. This is my life. So, what am I gonna do? I think that’s something that everybody has their own version of. When Emily Mortimer and I wrote the script, it was something we talked a lot about. The trappings of the movie star, the world around him, all of that was a world we know and was very interesting and compelling. But I really was more interested in these other emotional, psychological, essentially confronting mortality.

    4) Laura Dern & Adam Sandler Admit That They Remember A Lot Of Moments In Their Lives By Relating Them To The Projects They Were Working On At The Time

In ‘Jay Kelly’, the title character goes through his memories, relating each one to the project he was filming at the time. Adam Sandler and Laura Dern admit they do the same.

Adam Sandler: I remember a sad one, ’50 First Dates’. I remember, literally, we were going to Hawaii to shoot it. I got the phone call the day before we started shooting that my dad was sick. And then I remember that entire movie was just about going home every weekend from Hawaii to Florida to see my dad. So every time someone brings that movie up to me, I love that movie and I love Drew and I love the whole process, but I do always click with that memory of, oh man, that’s when my dad got sick, and that was a roughie.

Laura Dern: Like the film, there is the one reality of how cinema is our memories. How we are all attached to our story through those markers of film. But for me, the thing I think of, and this is a perfect moment to reflect on it, is the found family that comes with any, if we’re blessed to have, a vocation, a passion in our life. How we find our people. And my three favorite people are all sitting next to me.

    5) George Clooney Answers The Question, Would He Choose Fame Again If Given The Chance

The main theme of ‘Jay Kelly’ is learning to enjoy the one life you have and treat others how you wish to be treated. It also explores the price of fame, as discussed earlier. George Clooney was asked if he would choose to be famous again, if given the chance to do it all over again.

George Clooney:  When I was a young guy I used to watch Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous? I was cutting tobacco for $3 an hour and I’d hear some famous actor complain about their life, and I’d be like, F you, I’m cutting tobacco. So, I don’t find any reason to complain about things. I caught that brass ring. I got very lucky in my career and in my life and the chance to work with these people. Would I choose it again? Yeah. Fame is a funny thing because fame offers you the opportunity to be able to do the kind of projects you want to do. But you run towards it like a bug light and then when you get there, you really get zapped. There’s a lot of other pieces that come into play. But the truth is, what fame has afforded me is the ability to work on projects like this. I’m 64 years old. These parts don’t come around very often. I feel very lucky just to be able to get that opportunity. So, if fame has afforded me some of that, then that’s been an extraordinary experience for me. And the rest of it, yeah, there are things that you can’t do and there’s things that are limiting. But it’s a lot worse cutting tobacco.

In Theaters on limited release on November 14 (before landing on Netflix December 5), ‘Jay Kelly’ is the new movie from Noah Baumbach, who tends to specialize in putting his characters into emotional crisis. Here, he’s turned his attention to Hollywood.

    Pe5HPDw575nGckx5v0bM65

The new movie stars George Clooney (‘The Ides of March’), Adam Sandler (‘Happy Gilmore 2’), Laura Dern (‘Marriage Story’), Billy Crudup (‘Almost Famous’) and Greta Gerwig (‘Barbie’).

Noam Baumbach’s movies usually find characters at some sort of dramatic crossroads –– the marital fireworks of ‘Marriage Story’ or the family dynamics of ‘The Meyerowitz Stories.’

‘Jay Kelly’ is no different, even if the crises seem less urgent when focused on a wealthy movie star whose biggest issue is that his youngest daughter is about to fly the nest and he’s also reconsidering his life and career in the light of his mentor’s death.

Baumbach in some ways feels like he’s on autopilot here, the story (he co-wrote the script with Emily Mortimer, who has a small role in the movie) fueled by some very familiar beats and feelings. This is a plotline we’ve seen done before and, honestly, better.

Oddly, the real story, and the one that is much more compelling is between Sandler’s Ron and Dern’s Liz, Jay’s longtime manager and publicist, who have their own history and find themselves seeing their relationship complicate despite Ron’s seemingly happy marriage to Greta Gerwig’s Lois.

Baumbach keeps the direction mostly light on its feet, though some repetitive touches (such as Kelly’s rider containing cheesecake he doesn’t even like) weigh things down.

And the use of clunky flashbacks to explore our hero’s conflicted feelings doesn’t help.

Clooney brings his considerable star wattage to the title role, and is always watchable. It’s just an issue that the role never breaks free of a basic movie structure.

Sandler and Dern are superb in their supporting roles that have more nuance and flavor to them, while Greta Gerwig is also great as Sandler’s character’s wife.

‘Jay Kelly’ is far from Baumbach’s best, even with the cast giving their all. It’s emotionally formulaic, but wanders along amiably enough that you won’t be insulted you gave it a shot.

‘Jay Kelly’ receives 65 out of 100.

    Preview:

    • A second ‘Luther’ movie is in development at Netflix.
    • Idris Elba will be back as the title ‘tec, with Ruth Wilson returning as Alice.
    • Jamie Payne is directing.

It seems everyone’s favourite grumpy British detective with the flexible attitude to rules and the disheveled trench coat is headed back to movie territory.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Idris Elba will return in a new Netflix film based on the ‘Luther’ TV series, following on from 2023’s ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun.’

    gKLp6PZoh0ZxpmUh9pBac

And while it’s always good to see Big Dris returning as his most iconic character, the potentially more exciting news is that Ruth Wilson will be back as genius scientist/calculating psychopath Alice Morgan.

“But isn’t Alice dead?” we hear you ask? Allegedly! Let’s be honest: she’s faked her death before and series creator Neil Cross has always left her fate ambiguous.

Again written by Cross, the new story sees a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hit London, with Luther secretly called back into service. But the dramatic question is, how can our hero save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?

Dermot Crowley will also be back on screen, reprising his role of Schenk, a police superintendent who at first was Luther’s office antagonist but became a key ally in the police force.

Jamie Payne, who directed several episodes of the show and also made ‘The Fallen Sun,’ is back to handle this one. And he made the following statement about the new movie:

“Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”

And here’s what Cross had to say:

“Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family. I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them… And what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”

The cameras will be rolling this coming February in the UK.
