    • A Snoop Dogg biopic is in the works.
    • Director Craig Brewer will handle the movie.
    • ‘Outer Banks’ Jonathan Daviss has been cast as Snoop.

The spate of musical biopics in the works continues, and the latest is for someone we’re actually surprised hasn’t already gotten a fully authorized one.

Universal, which has seen box office and awards success with the likes of ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and ‘8 Mile,’ is putting the pieces together for a Snoop Dogg movie. Yes, the star of ‘The Underdoggs’ (okay, he’s done more than that –– see below) will be the focus of a biopic with Brian Grazer and Snoop himself among its producers.

Deadline reports that Craig Brewer (‘Hustle & Flow’) is on board to make the movie, and is going to do a pass on the script, which originated with ‘Black Panther’s Joe Robert Cole.

It’s all part of a deal that Snoop’s Death Row Pictures production company hatched with NBCUniversal Entertainment in April this year.

This was Snoop’s comment at the time:

“Not everyone has the courage and vision to see what Death Row Pictures can bring to the table, but Donna and the NBCUniversal team have always understood, which is why I am proud to call NBCUniversal my new home. The Dogg has officially moved into the neighborhood, ya dig?”

Jonathan Daviss, who plays Pope in the Netflix series ‘Outer Banks’ has won the role of Snoop, per Deadline.

    What is Snoop Dogg’s story?

Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. on October 20, 1971, in Long Beach, California, is a legendary figure in hip-hop and an influential pop culture icon. His nickname “Snoop” came from his mother, who thought he resembled Snoopy from Peanuts.

The neighborhood where he grew up was a tough one, and he was involved in gangs and had multiple run-ins with the law.

Snoop was discovered by Dr. Dre in the early 1990s and was featured on Dre’s 1992 debut solo album “The Chronic.” He released his debut album “Doggystyle” in 1993, which debuted at No. 1 and became a classic West Coast G-funk record.

Released numerous albums across several labels including “Tha Doggfather, ” “R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece,” and “Doggumentary” His hits include “Gin and Juice” and “Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)”

Snoop has showed a knack for re-inventing himself, including as Snoop Lion in 2012 during a reggae phase and spiritual journey to Jamaica, before returning to rap and even venturing into gospel with 2018’s “Bible of Love.”

He’s collaborated with a wide variety of artists across music genres including Tupac Shakur, Pharrell Williams and Katy Perry.

The famed stoner has turned his favorite pastime into a business, investing in cannabis businesses, but diversifying to tech, and media (including acquiring Death Row Records in 2022, and expanding it into his Death Row company).

On screen, he’s appeared numerous movies, including ‘Training Day,’ ‘Baby Boy,’, ‘Soul Plane’ and ‘Starsky & Hutch.’ On television, he has made memorable guest appearances on shows such as ‘The Boondocks,’ ‘Empire,’ and ‘Monk,’ and has hosted his own series. He was a big hit at last year’s Paris Olympics.

And, perhaps most surprisingly, he’s a good friend and frequent collaborator with culinary and home furnishing icon Martha Stewart.

This year, Snoop sparked controversy when he agreed to perform at one of Donald Trump’s inaugural balls.

Here’s how he responded on Instagram to criticism of the decision:

“It’s Sunday I got gospel in my heart. For all the hate I’m going to answer with love, I love too much. Get your life right, stop worrying about mine. I’m cool. I’m together. Still a Black man. Still 100 percent Black. All out ’til you ball out or ’til you fall out.”

What else has Craig Brewer worked on?

While Brewer made his directorial debut with 2000’s ‘The Poor & Hungry,’ it was ‘Hustle & Flow’ in 2005 that really saw him break out. The movie, which starred Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson in the story of a Memphis pimp in a mid-life crisis who attempts to become a successful hip-hop emcee.

It scored an Oscar nomination for Howard and hip hop group Three 6 Mafia took home a statuette for their song “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp.”

Brewer went on to the likes of ‘Black Snake Moan,’ the ‘Footloose’ remake, and two projects with Eddie Murphy, ‘Dolemite is my Name’ (which features Snoop in a role) and ‘Coming 2 America.’)

His latest movie, ‘Song Sung Blue,’ which chronicles the ups and downs of Lightning and Thunder, a Milwaukee husband and wife Neil Diamond tribute act, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, is due in theaters on Christmas Day.

When will the Snoop Dogg biopic be on screens?

It’s too early for any release date news on this one –– we’ll have to wait and see how quickly the movie comes together, but Daviss’ casting is certainly a positive step forward.

  • NBCUniversal to Launch Streaming Service in April 2020

NBCUniversal to Launch Streaming Service in April 2020

    The Office
    NBC

The rollout of new streaming services continues.

NBCUniversal has revealed that it plans to launch its forthcoming streaming service in April 2020, Variety reports. The ad-supported platform will be modeled after the European service Now TV, which comes from NBCUniversal’s sister company Sky UK. It will feature “a gigantic library of all favorites,” according to NBCUniversal in the past, and it will notably become the exclusive home of “The Office,” a perennial favorite, in 2021.

The streamer will debut original content as well, and NBCUniversal is investing in it, according to CEO Steve Burke. He shared that the company is focusing on developing originals that are linked to their existing properties. That’s similar to both WarnerMedia and Disney, for example, as both have ordered multiple series with familiar stories and characters. Everything old is new again, after all.

Burke didn’t reveal too many specifics about the streamer because of “competitive reasons,” as Deadline reports, but he did say that there are more than 500 employees working on the project. We look forward to seeing the fruits of their labors in April.

  • ‘A.P. Bio’ Getting Revived for Season 3 by NBCUniversal’s Streaming Service

‘A.P. Bio’ Getting Revived for Season 3 by NBCUniversal’s Streaming Service

    NBC

Class is back in session! NBC’s recently canceled comedy “A.P. Bio” is being revived for a third season on NBCUniversal’s untitled forthcoming streaming service.

Last month, NBC axed the Lorne Michaels-produced show, which starred Glenn Howerton as a disgraced Harvard philosophy professor-who returns to his hometown to teach high school. Patton Oswalt also starred as the school’s principal.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s back from the dead to become the new streamer’s first scripted series. It will join library content including “The Office.”

While “A.P. Bio” was a middling performer in the ratings, it is wholly owned and produced within the company (a key factor for renewing TV shows these days). Universal TV will have to sign the stars to new deals after their options expired in June.

“I’m so overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the fans,” said series creator Mike O’Brien. “The cast and I are thrilled that we get to make more and I’m excited to work with the NBCU streaming platform.”

NBCU’s streaming service is set to launch in 2020.

  • ‘The Office’ To Stream Exclusively on NBCUniversal Starting in 2021

‘The Office’ To Stream Exclusively on NBCUniversal Starting in 2021

    NBC

If you want to stream “The Office” in the future, it won’t be on Netflix.

The Emmy-winning NBC series will leave its current streaming in 2020 and then only be available via NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service, beginning in 2021.

But, unlike the other upcoming streaming services from Disney, WarnerMedia and Apple, NBCU’s site will be free to the company’s pay-TV subscribers and supported by advertising.

It will launch across Comcast in the US and Sky in the UK, reaching more than 50 million households from the moment it goes live in mid-2020, according to Deadline.

If don’t have either of those cable providers, it’s not clear what your access is. Perhaps that’s where NBCU’s stand-alone, subscription version, which is also in the works, would come in.

And it looks like there will be an “Office”-free gap between the time the show leaves Netflix and the time it hits NBCU’s service.

During the NBCU upfront presentation in May, ad sales chief Linda Yaccarino said, “Next year we’re going to unveil the largest initiative in our company’s history: We’re going to have our own ad-supported platform. While other companies are pushing advertisers out, we’re bringing them in. It will have a slate of originals and a gigantic library of all favorites. The shows that people love the most and stream the most are coming home at a price that every person can afford: free.”

Although there’s no official launch date for the NBCU site, it’s expected to be timed to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Other NBC shows will also be “coming home” to the network’s new service, the company announced earlier this year.

  • Disney Takes Full Control of Hulu in Deal With Comcast

Disney Takes Full Control of Hulu in Deal With Comcast

    Hulu

Disney is taking the steering wheel at Hulu.

The company already owns a majority share of the streaming service, but will now take on full operational control of Hulu under a deal with Comcast.

As part of the agreement, Comcast will sell NBCUniversal’s Hulu stake by January 2024 for at least $5.8 billion.

Hulu launched in 2008 as a joint venture between NBCUniversal and News Corp., with Disney joining as a stakeholder the following year.

When Disney acquired Fox’s entertainment businesses earlier this year, it became the majority shareholder in Hulu.

Also earlier this year, AT&T sold its stake in Hulu back to Disney and NBCU, which they distributed evenly so that Disney had a 66% stake and NBCU had 33%.

Under the new deal, NBCUniversal will continue to license content to Hulu through 2024. But by 2022, NBCU can cancel most of its licensing agreements.

NBCU is expected to launch its own streaming service within the next few years.

Disney, meanwhile, can integrate Hulu into its future streaming plans unencumbered. It will likely house content that doesn’t fit the brand of the family-friendly Disney+ — adult-oriented films and television series. There are already early plans to roll out Hulu internationally, and to bundle it with Disney+ and ESPN.

Hulu was the first streaming service to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series, when “The Handmaid’s Tale” won Best Drama in 2017.

  • NBCUniversal Says Its Most Popular Shows Are ‘Coming Home’ to New Streaming Service

NBCUniversal Says Its Most Popular Shows Are ‘Coming Home’ to New Streaming Service

    The Office
    NBC

Speculation continues over where popular TV shows like “The Office” will stream as new services emerge.

NBCUniversal discussed its upcoming streamer during an event in New York on Monday, and the company’s  chairman of advertising and client partnerships, Linda Yaccarino, shared some interesting information. She told the audience that when the ad-supported platform launches in 2020, “the shows that people love the most and stream the most are coming home,” per Deadline. But before anyone becomes too alarmed, she noted that the service will be free given that it’s paid for by ads.

The company is planning to have “a gigantic library of all favorites,” and “The Office” seems like a great candidate. The show is the current most-watched show on Netflix, as the Wall Street Journal reported, so it could be a big draw at some point after NBCUniversal launches its streaming service. In fact, WSJ noted that Yaccarino talked about various NBC characters, including Jim and Pam of “The Office.” Netflix does, however, have a deal for exclusive streaming rights until 2021.

The streaming landscape continues to evolve. WarnerMedia is also launching its own service, and there’s talk that “Friends” — another favorite on Netflix — will move to it. We may have to get used to some changes (like commercials), but at least these beloved shows will still be available to watch somewhere.
