  • ‘This Is Us’ EPs Reveal Season 3 Details on Premiere, Beth and Toby Back Stories

‘This Is Us’ EPs Reveal Season 3 Details on Premiere, Beth and Toby Back Stories

    This Is Us
    NBC

The Big 3 will have another big day when “This Is Us” returns for its third season this fall.

Co-showrunners Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker revealed that the Season 3 premiere will again center on the shared 38th birthday of Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Kevin (Justin Hartley).

And as the season goes, the NBC family drama will “catch up to all of those [flash-forward scenes from the Season 2 finale] over the course of this year,” Aptaker told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour.

As fans will recall, those flash-forward scenes included Kevin traveling to Vietnam with his new girlfriend/Beth’s cousin, Toby (Chris Sullivan) suffering from depression, and a much older Randall visiting his adult daughter Tess.

And the executive producers teased that they’ll finally reveal some of Toby and Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) back stories. Those flashbacks will dovetail with current storylines.

“We’re going to be seeing Toby go through various challenges,” Berger said. “Obviously, we showed last season their journey to have a family. That’s a journey that we’re going to be continuing this year, and there’s going to be the stresses of your first year of marriage.”

Still, the season won’t be all stress and doom and gloom, especially now that the question of how Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) died is out of the way.

“This is a hopeful season,” Berger said, “and a season about true new beginnings for everybody.”

“This Is Us” premieres Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. on NBC.

  • Jennifer Aniston Fantasizes About ‘Friends’ Revival, But Would Also Reboot ‘Golden Girls’

Jennifer Aniston Fantasizes About ‘Friends’ Revival, But Would Also Reboot ‘Golden Girls’

Now Jennifer Aniston has us fantasizing about a “Friends” meets “Golden Girls” reboot.

Obviously Phoebe would be the Rose. Would Rachel be the Blanche? Monica the Dorothy? Who would be Sophia — Chandler?

In a new interview with InStyle, Jen (as one calls her) made it clear she’s paying close attention to all of the reboots and revivals out there these days — including NBC’s “Will & Grace.” Could “Friends” do the same thing? It’s something the “Friends” cast members are asked all the time, and since they held out for big pay together they probably wouldn’t return without each other. That might be an issue.

Aniston had some fun ideas, though, for what could happen if we all just wait a couple of decades.

Here’s what writer Molly McNearney (who is married to Jimmy Kimmel) asked Jennifer Aniston in that little section of their lengthy InStyle Q&A:

MM: What about Friends? Will Friends ever come back?

JA: Before that show ended, people were asking if we were coming back. Courteney [Cox] and Lisa [Kudrow] and I talk about it. I fantasize about it. It really was the greatest job I ever had. I don’t know what it would look like today, but you never know. So many shows are being successfully rebooted. I know Matt LeBlanc doesn’t want to be asked that question anymore. But maybe we could talk him into it. Or we just give it some time and then Lisa, Courteney, and I could reboot ‘The Golden Girls’ and spend our last years together on wicker furniture.

Don’t TEASE us. That’s exactly what should happen. There’s a Florida lanai out there with your names on it.

  • ‘Timeless’ Stars React to Show’s Finale Plans, and They’re So Grateful to Fans

‘Timeless’ Stars React to Show’s Finale Plans, and They’re So Grateful to Fans

    Timeless
    NBC

Although “Timeless” is set to end once and for all, the stars of the show have a lot to be grateful for — namely, their fans.

NBC canceled the time travel series for the second time in late June, but fans didn’t give up hope. Having saved the show once before, they launched a campaign to keep the story going. And now that they’ve at least partially gotten their wish in the form of a two-part finale, the show’s stars are sending them their thanks.

Several of the “Timeless” cast members made sure to share their love for the fan base (aka “Clockblockers”) on Twitter after news of the finale broke. Among them were Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, and Malcolm Barrett.

Others involved in the show were thrilled to celebrate the news as well, including its co-creator Eric Kripke and the series’ writers.

Fans have good reason to celebrate. “Timeless” might not be getting another season, but at least its major unanswered questions will be resolved. Better still, Clockblockers are getting a chance to say goodbye.

The two-part “Timeless” series finale does not yet have an air date.

  • NBC Revives ‘Timeless’ Again For Two-Part Series Finale

    Timeless
    NBC

Third time’s the (final) charm for “Timeless.”

Last month, NBC canceled the time-traveling drama for the second time in two seasons but now, it’s bringing the show back (again) for a two-part series finale to air during the holidays. Stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, and Goran Višnjić are all on board.

“While we wish we could’ve made another dozen seasons of Timeless, this is the next best thing,” creators Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke said in a statement.

“We’re thrilled to take the Lifeboat out for one last spin and bring closure to our story. The studio, network, cast, and crew are all doing this for one reason only: the fans. Because they deserve it. Because the fans made this happen and we thank them for their passion, support, and helicopters. So? You guys want to get Rufus back or what?”

With this special series finale, “Timeless” fans will get some closure on the huge Season 2 cliffhanger that saw future versions of Lucy and Wyatt arrive at the bunker to save their dead colleague Rufus.

It was passionate fan support after NBC first canceled the show in May 2017 that persuaded the network to change its mind just days later and bring it back for a second season. Season 2 premiered in March in a new Sunday night time slot and posted only modest ratings.

And since “Timeless” is produced out of house by Sony at a time when most networks are turning to in-house productions (see: the bloodbath at Fox), it was likely considered too expensive to keep on air. No other outlets, including deep-pocketed Netflix, stepped forward to save the show.

  • ‘This Is Us’ Season 3 Filming Has Begun, and The Cast Is So Adorably Happy

    ABC

At last, “This Is Us” Season 3 is filming. Better still, the first day back, July 10, brought some fun photos and video from the cast.

Based on what we’ve seen on social media, the cast and crew were just as excited to get back to filming as fans are to see them do it. Leading up to their new beginning, star Chrissy Metz said it felt like “the night before the first day of school” and shared “gratitude for each one of you who are as excited as we are to share these new chapters together.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BlCBWZHgPvS/

And that was only the beginning. There were numerous posts from her co-stars and the crew on July 10. Let’s start with our favorite: a video tweeted by Sterling K. Brown that shows him making the most of Day 1 alongside his onscreen wife, Susan Kelechi Watson.

Brown and Watson doing the Shiggy? Yes, please. When the co-stars weren’t dancing around on set, though, they were hard at work. Both actors were in the first scene, which we know thanks to a photo from “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman.

Brown and his co-stars later had a lot more to say about the day. Clearly, they were happy to be reunited and resume work on the hit NBC drama.

“This Is Us” returns to NBC on Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

  • ‘Timeless’ Season 3 Looks Very Unlikely, But Co-Creator Says a Movie Is Still Possible

    NBC

There have been some high-profile TV show saves recently, but not every series has been so lucky. After being canceled by NBC in late June (for the second time no less), “Timeless” is still without a home.

Sony Pictures TV tried to bring the sci-fi drama to another network but was unsuccessful, Deadline reports. All hope isn’t quite lost, but the actors’ deals have now expired, according to the show’s co-creator and executive producer Shawn Ryan. He gave fans a disappointing update via Twitter on Monday, warning fans that “it appears there will be no Season 3.” That said, he did indicate a “Timeless” movie is still a possibility, if a somewhat remote one.

“Discussions still take place between @SPTV and @NBC about a possible 2 hour movie to conclude the #Timeless story,” he wrote, “but there are considerable economic obstacles that make it an uncertainty.”

As Ryan stressed, any continuation of “Timeless” is far from guaranteed. The good news is that we shouldn’t be in limbo much longer at least. The co-creator indicated in another tweet that a decision could be made this week when asked by a fan if there would be a way to get closure if the movie doesn’t come to fruition.

The idea of no continuation is definitely disappointing given that fans were left with some major questions unanswered after the Season 2 finale. It’s not a fun position for them to be in, but at least there is at least one option left on the table. Here’s hoping for good news soon.

Correction: This article previously stated that “Timeless” was canceled for the second time in May but has been since updated with the correct time frame.

  • NBC Cancels ‘Timeless’ a Second Time, But Wrap-Up Movie Still Possible

Leslie Jones may have to make good on her threat to march nude, ’cause NBC just canceled “Timeless.”

    Again.

NBC canceled “Timeless” after one season last May, but fan outcry brought it back for a second season.

But this is what happens when a fan base is vocal and passionate … but unable to convert enough new viewers into the fandom.

As Deadline noted, this time NBC waited to share the bad news until after the May upfronts. The cancellation news came just before the casts’ options were set to expire.

But there’s a small spark of hope on the horizon for at least a wrap-up movie to provide closure after that major Season 2 finale cliffhanger; here’s that bit from Deadline:

“[T]he network and Timeless producer Sony Pictures TV had been discussing doing a two-hour movie that would resolve the cliffhanger in the recent Season 2 finale and wrap the stories on the show, giving fans closure. I hear the two sides have not been able to make the economics work so far but conversations continue, and NBC appears interested.

Doing two-hour movie finales is very expensive as it involves ramping up production and reassembling a team with little financial upside for the series’ network or studio. The economics are especially challenging on broadcast TV; the only series that has done it in the past decade or so was CBS’ CSI, which already had made a ton of money for CBS parent CBS Corp., spawning a billion dollar franchise for CBS TV Studios. On SVOD, Netflix recently did it with its cult sci-fi drama series Sense8.”

Co-showrunner Shawn Ryan tweeted about the sad news and wrap-up movie idea:

Co-executive producer Eric Kripke also weighed in:

The stars also reacted to the sad news:

Hopefully NBC doesn’t leave the fandom completely hanging. Closure is needed!

  • ‘The Jerry Springer Show’ Is Ending, But Reruns Will Still Air in Syndication

It’s the end of an era for trashy daytime talk shows: “The Jerry Springer Show” is officially ceasing production.

The news comes from The Associated Press, which reported this week that NBC Universal, which produces the longrunning series, revealed that it will “stop making new episodes” of Springer’s eponymous show. As for why the show got the boot now, after airing more than 4,000 installments throughout its more than two-decade run?

“[N]either Springer nor his bosses will talk about it,” The AP said.

Still, the iconic chants of “Jerry! Jerry!” won’t be absent from the airwaves entirely: NBC Universal said that the show would remain in syndication on The CW and other networks. The AP also reports that “Producers said ‘there is a possibility’ that more original episodes could be ordered sometime in the future but, since they wouldn’t answer questions, it’s not known how serious that possibility is.”

“The Jerry Springer Show” started in in syndication in 1991 and quickly became one of the most popular shows of its ilk, offering shocking and salacious interviews about sex, drugs, and family drama, soundtracked by a boisterous crowd. The series was once so ubiquitous, according to TV syndication analyst Bill Carroll, that “There was a time that Jerry Springer was running at a minimum of two times a day.”

At least we’ll always have reruns. (And so, so many YouTube clips.)

  • NBC Reveals ‘Hair’ Will Be Its Next Live Musical, for 2019

NBC is ready to let the sunshine in with “Hair”! The network announced Broadway’s 1968 anti-war classic will be its next live musical adaptation, after the recent success of “Jesus Christ Superstar Live.”

“Hair” will air next spring 2019.

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron share a joint statement:

“When we both, individually, saw Hair on Broadway, we were knocked out by how musical theater could be stretched into something so daring, immersive and audacious. Its recent Broadway revival showed how timeless the show is and that it’s relevant to any era. Hair is filled with heartfelt emotion, joy and thrilling music and it really will be the new dawning of the Age of Aquarius.”

Several “Hair” songs became top radio hits, including “Aquarius” and “Good Morning Starshine.” (Guessing they will skip “Sodomy” — and maybe the nude scene, although they could find a way to adapt that for network TV.

NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt also shared a statement:

“These songs are part of the vocabulary of popular music, and this rebellious story of young people protesting and standing up for what they believe in is as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. This will be the perfect live event, and I’m looking forward to seeing Craig and Neil, along with our partners at MGM and the original creators, bring the audience to their feet as they experience these beloved songs and recognizable young characters.”

Stay tuned for casting announcements. Milos Forman directed an adaptation of the musical in 1979, starring John Savage, Treat Williams, and Beverly D’Angelo.
