‘Game of Thrones’ Star Teases Final Season Will Leave Your ‘Mind Blown’

“Game of Thrones” fans, prepare to have your “mind blown.”

That’s what cast member Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays Daenerys Targaryen’s right-hand woman Missandei, teases is going to happen when they see the eighth and final season next year on HBO.

“This season is going to be incredibly satisfying for people. It is going to be incredibly exciting and heartbreaking,” she told the Hindustan Times.”  I feel like people will have their mind blown when they watch the final one.”

Very little is known about Season 8, other than that it will contain six episodes. In the Season 7 finale, the Night King and his Ice Dragon had blasted through the Wall and were marching into Westeros. Missandei’s boss, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), hooked up with King of the North Jon Snow (Kit Harington) — neither of them realizing they were related.

“Like in the last couple of seasons, we have seen the pace of the show increase with the stakes getting higher and higher,” Emmanuel said.

“There are so many storylines that have to come to conclusion. We have to play them out, so the pace of the show is continuing on that sense.”

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 will premiere sometime in the first half of 2019 on HBO.

  • Nathalie Emmanuel Talks High Tech vs. Fast Cars, ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7

'The Fate Of The Furious' New York Premiere - Outside ArrivalsWhether she’s part of an ever-growing army that includes fire-breathing dragons or a tight-knit team of street-racing ex-criminals, Nathalie Emmanuel is right at the epicenter of pop culture.

After turning heads with her breakout role in HBO’s fervently followed fantasy series “Game of Thrones” as Missandei, the multilingual right-hand woman to the increasingly powerful Daenerys Targaryen, the British-born actress joined the globally adored “Fast and the Furious” franchise as the tech-savvy Ramsey with its seventh installment, returning as a full-fledged member of Dominic Toretto’s crew in this year’s blockbuster “The Fate of the Furious.”

In anticipation of “Fate of the Furious’s” July 11 Blu-ray debut, and the July 16th premiere of “Game of Thrones” Season 7, Emmanuel joined Moviefone to reflect on her place in two of the most popular entertainment franchises in the respective histories of film and television.

Moviefone: Having stepped into the “Fast” family in the seventh film, what was it like coming into “Fate of the Furious” as an established part of the group?

Nathalie Emmanuel: It was a lot of fun. It was like that feeling of going back to school after summer holidays and seeing all your friends, and just feeling excited to be back with them, and excited to be another adventure together. It was really cool. I really enjoyed going back and seeing everyone again. I’d seen them throughout the year, but like working together and getting to hang out all the time was fun.

You already knew what it was like to be part of something that was having phenomenal international success with “Game of Thrones,” but how did being part of this franchise change things up for you? Did it open up an even bigger world?

Yeah, for sure. I guess I’m visible to people that might not have known me before. “Game of Thrones” has a huge following, but I think, for a long time at least, there was a very, sort of, specific audience. So having joined the car movies / action film genre with, like, these epic names, I think it just made me a lot more visible to people that might not have seen “Game of Thrones” or had a big interest in that kind of genre.

I definitely felt a shift when I joined that cast. Instantly, as soon as I was announced as joining the cast, the fans were just so supportive and were instantly like, “Yay, we’re excited!” I just felt their presence immediately.

This franchise was one of the earlier action films to put the female characters right at the center of the action and have them be just as capable and tough as the male characters. What did it mean to you to be able to take on a role in the “Fast” films where, even though you’re not necessarily behind the wheel, you’re just as tough and capable as anybody else on the team?

Absolutely! The reason why I loved Ramsey was the fact that she wasn’t a car girl, she wasn’t a racer. She came with a very specific skill set that she was very good at. It got her into trouble, but she certainly can do some amazing things. She totally has earned her place and has proved her value to the team without having to drive a car. I love that. She’s a very strong, intelligent woman who has her own agency, and certainly her own independence as well.

In your own life, are you more of a tech person, or a car person? In which area are you more proficient?

I’m probably more proficient with technology, just because I guess I use it more. I don’t actually drive. I use technology more — it doesn’t mean I’m good at it!

You’ve had these two great platforms as an actress. What are you looking for next? Are you still of a blockbuster mind? Or do you want to do something smaller and more intimate? What’s on your acting bucket list?

I’ve mostly been reading independent film scripts, to be honest. Definitely looking for some smaller, more intimate films. At the end of the day, any project, it has to be right. I have to feel really passionate about it. If another big action film came along, or big blockbuster film came along, and I was excited about playing the part, and I was passionate about it, then I wouldn’t necessarily say no. But I’m definitely more focused at the moment on doing some more intimate stories and storytelling.

Now that you’re closer to the end of “Game of Thrones” than the beginning, how do you feel about the whole phenomenon and your part in it?

I don’t want to think about it, because I’m in denial about the fact that it’s ending! No, obviously, it’s been life-changing for me. It put me in a position that I could never have dreamed of. I was a huge fan of the show since before I’ve been a part of it. Such a blessing.

When I got that job, I was very out of work — yeah, I was very much out of work! — so it came at the perfect time. I was ready to go back to school and choose … just do something productive, because I wasn’t necessarily given the opportunity to act at that time. So it came at the perfect time, and it really gave me a platform to get back into auditioning, and people were then wanting to see me because the show had such great credibility.

For me, it’s just meant working with such incredible people who are so excellent at what they do: actors, special effects, stunts, the producers, the writers — everyone. Just witnessing such exquisite work, for me, has been amazing. What it means to the world at large, I think it’s different for everybody. We’ve just been so invested in these characters and in this amazing story that George [R.R. Martin] has wrote. It would be sad to see it go. I think people will miss it. I think people will miss it — because I will miss it! As a fan and as an actress.

I’ll miss it as well, but I’m glad we still got plenty more to come. I don’t know what you can and can’t say about the new season, but can you offer us a little tease? She was in such an interesting place at the end of the season, right there at Daenerys’s side, ready to go to that next level. Are you able to give a little sense of where we see her go?

I’d be very cautious in what I said, but obviously, I think it’s been very clear that it’s all sort of coming to a head now. The stories are all sort of colliding, and everyone’s sort of coming together in ways that we have not seen before, and the stakes are much higher.

Everything that we’ve been working up to for the last six seasons. In terms of Missandei, like her role as advisor to Daenerys just keeps growing. She has her own things to deal with this season, too. And the reality of this impending war that’s coming is very, very real for her for many reasons. So yeah, we get to sort of see that unfold too, which is cool.

  • Jon Snow Meets Daenerys Targaryen … on the Dance Floor in Spain

And here we thought they’d meet at an Imagine Dragons concert. “Game of Thrones” fans are looking forward to the inevitable meeting of main characters Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, and it looks like we just got a preview — in Instagram photos from Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke‘s night out at a Chemical Brothers concert in Bilbao, Spain.

Season 7 is now shooting, with a lot of time (and spoilers) in Spain. Let’s just say we’re not surprised to see these stars spending time together, and of course Emilia’s BFF Nathalie Emmanuel was at the concert, too. (Playing chaperone? That would be very Missandei of her.)

Check out some fun pics, complete with Kit almost breaking out of brooding Jon Snow mode and Emilia continuing to provide the best captions:

Fun time last night in #bilbao #GOT

Kit knows nuthin about smiling in selfies! But apparently he does know how to rock out.

If you’ve been following the many set spoilers, you know there’s a lot going on in Spain this season, as well as in Northern Ireland, where most of the series is shot. Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) recently posted a sexy throwback photo with Kit Harington, and we’re looking forward to seeing the Jon/Sansa dynamic in the North next year as well.

  • Emilia Clarke Had the Weirdest 30th Birthday Party on ‘Game of Thrones’ Set

Happy birthday to the Dragon Queen!

“Game of Thrones” Season 7. Our beloved khaleesi hit the three-decade mark on October 23, and the photo she shared to mark the occasion is as bizarre as Arya’s storyline in Season 6. Her caption — hilarious as usual — just adds to the randomness:

So we have Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants. Are the GoT showrunners — David Benioff and Dan Weiss — in those costumes? Where are the spoilers, Jon Snow’s mum, and Channing Tatum?

Nathalie Emmanuel shared a more straightforward birthday post for her friend. The actresses have bonded as closely as their characters, Missandei and Daenerys, and seem to be enjoying their time together as they shoot the 2017 season:

Clarke previously teased that Season 7 would be “ridiculous” with another “epic” battle sequence. She also shared a windy set video in Northern Ireland, where she is now shooting, since Dany chose to cross the Narrow Sea and now has to deal with winter instead of the warmth of Meereen. You asked for this, Queen D!

  • ‘Game of Thrones’: Nathalie Emmanuel Wants More Action, Romance for Missandei

Premiere Of HBO's "Game Of Thrones" Season 6 - ArrivalsGame of Thrones” shooting schedule has typically kept her fairly landlocked in the European locations that comprise Meereen, but there’s nothing like Comic-Con International to lure the cast and creators of HBO’s fantasy phenomenon to the sunnier shores of San Diego.

While the actress, who plays Daenerys Targaryen‘s right-hand woman, Missandei, was making the rounds at the pop cultural celebration, she chatted with Moviefone about her role’s increasingly high-profile place in the pantheon of powerful genre women and her hopes to swing a sword or two before too long.

Moviefone: Give me the highlight — the “pinch me, I’m dreaming” moment — of your Comic-Con experience, where you got to geek out over somebody.

Nathalie Emmanuel: Several times throughout the last couple of days. I saw Sigourney Weaver — that made me really happy. I didn’t get to talk to her, but I just admired her from afar and was so happy.

But I got to do a panel with Lucy Lawless. I watched her all growing up, so that was a pretty monumental moment for me. And then she took a selfie and then posted it on her Instagram and tagged me in it, so I feel really cool now. My friend texted me like, “Oh my goodness, it’s you in a picture of Lucy Lawless!” So I was so happy.

What does it mean to you to kind of join this elite group of women in genre entertainment? They were breaking down barriers, things are a little better for your generation, but still you’ve got to fight for the piece of ground you get.

    Absolutely.

So to be a part of that now, and to be with these women who paved the trail — tell me about that experience.

I mean, it was so great. They have so many years of experience and they’ve gone, as you say, for my generation it’s maybe slightly easier, but these women have kind of fought the fight for many, many years, and it’s so inspiring to me, and I just sort of sat with these women like, “Wow!” Yeah, I was in awe of them all really. To be sat next to them and be on a panel as like an equal in a way was just such an honor.

During your “Game of Thrones” panel, you spoke eloquently about the friendship between Daenerys and Missandei. Tell me about your friendship with Emilia Clarke and that partnership at work behind the scenes.

Yeah, Emilia is such a doll. We get along so well. We have a really lovely time working together. I guess in our storyline, it’s mostly guys, and then it’s just us two. And it’s really, really nice to have that female companion and just like friend, and we can take time off set to sort of do girl time and go life download or whatever. So that’s really, really amazing to have.

She’s a really sweet girl, and she’s actually amazing to watch work. I’ve learned a lot from her and I really admire her and her choices that she’s made in her career as a young actress. I’m just so proud to be her friend and work with her. She’s just a wonderful person. And we have so much fun. We have such a giggle.

What’s a goofy off-screen thing that you guys bond over? Is there some shared love of something fun?

Yeah, it’s like Beyoncé and a good cup of tea, to be honest. Just sit and have a good old chat over a cup of tea. Yeah, we really like Beyoncé. So yeah, there’s that.

Do you want more action, or do you want more romance for Missandei? You have a romance with Grey Worm that we got to see it a little bit more than we have recently. What are you hoping for to get to play with her?

I mean, playing some action would be really fun, just because it’s something outside of Missandei’s realm of what she’s done before. War is coming, so maybe she’ll have to. Who knows? She’ll have to learn some sort of skill.

But the romantic side is just such a sweet thing and I love it. Their storyline is so, so, so endearing, and I always enjoy working with Jacob [Anderson]. He’s just wonderful. So to maybe explore that some more would be really fun. It’s so nice to watch. Whenever I see our scenes together, or our little moments together, I’m always like, “yay.” It makes me really happy.

Just to come full circle, what’s the best fan encounter you had at Comic-Con?

Well, there’s been many because everybody’s just showing us so much love! I’ve really just been so happy to have people be high-fiving me and be like, “Yeah, you’re representing strong women.” I had someone high-five me and be like, “Yeah, thank you for representing women of color in ‘Game of Thrones.’”

It’s a real interesting time we’re living in right now. There’s definitely a movement, especially for women and with the most recent unrest with racial unrest and tensions. It’s really, I feel so proud to represent both of those demographics like in “Game of Thrones.” So it’s been so nice to have people receive me so well and like want to high five me and be like,”Hey!” It’s just so great.Thoughts Every "Game Of Thrones" Fan Has On Sunday
