    • Celine Song is writing a ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel.
    • Sony is backing the new movie.
    • There is no word yet if original cast members Julia Roberts or Rupert Everett will return.

Though the company hasn’t exactly had the best luck dusting off its back catalogue for sequel treatment –– neither ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ nor especially ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ have set the box office aflame or won over legions of new fans –– that, apparently isn’t stopping Sony.

According to Collider, Celine Song, the acclaimed writer/director behind ‘Past Lives’ (which was nominated for two Oscars) and this year’s ‘Materialists’, has been hired to work on script for a sequel to 1997 romantic comedy ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’.

The movie, which starred the likes of Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett, was directed by P.J. Hogan and was a hit for the studio, earning almost $300 million on a $38 million budget.

It’s also something that, if the starry cast can be tempted back, feels worthy of a follow-up.

What was the story of ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’?

The original starred Roberts as food critic Julianne Potter, who discovers that her longtime friend, Michael (Mulroney), is planning to get married to Kimmy Wallace (Diaz). The two, who had a relationship in college, had vowed to get hitched with each other if they each remained unmarried by the ripe old age of 28.

Realizing she is in love, Jules plans to sabotage the event…

‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ has been remade several times in other countries, including Mexico and China.

Song certainly seems like a solid choice to write this –– she’s proved she can channel romantic longing and adult relationships, and would have a good take on where the characters are now.

What has the cast said about progress on a sequel?

Mulroney, while making the promotional rounds for one of his latest projects, Netflix series ‘The Hunting Wives’ teased what he’s heard in an interview with the New York Post:

“I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”

So… yes, hardly the biggest update, but Song’s hiring surely points to the studio looking to propose something.

When will the ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel be in theaters?

That’s tough to answer at this point –– with Song only just starting work on a script, no director attached and deals yet to be locked in with cast old or new, a release date is unlikely for now.

And Sony may also look to see how other legacy sequels such as ‘Practical Magic 2’ perform before truly committing to this one.

Tony Bennett, a crooner of the highest order, who was able to re-invent himself several times through the decades, and whose music is all over movie soundtracks, has died. He was 96.

    Early Life

Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born on August 3rd, 1926, in Queens to a father who died when he was 10. His mother worked as a seamstress while raising three children. Bennett sang at family gatherings and listened to Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby in his teens before serving in the Army infantry during World War II. He was 18 when he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate a concentration camp at Landsberg, Germany.

His military experience informed his political activism after he was reprimanded for spending Thanksgiving with the family of a black fellow soldier.

In New York after the war, Bennett held a series of odd jobs — elevator operator, grocery delivery boy, singing waiter — while using the GI Bill to study voice at the American Theatre Wing, the organization that sponsors the Tony Awards.

He was working under the name Joe Bari in 1949 when comedian Bob Hope invited him to be his opening act at New York’s Paramount Theater. Just before the young singer went onstage, Hope asked him what his real name was. It was Hope who suggested he use the name Tony Bennett, and history was made.

    Music Career

Bennett’s first chart-topping hit was 1950’s ‘Because of You’, and he was a performer very much in the Sinatra mold: an old-school crooner whose back catalogue includes such memorable music as ‘Rags to Riches’, ‘Cold, Cold Heart’, and the iconic ‘I Left my Heart in San Francisco’.

A multiple Grammy winner, Bennett rode a turbulent life and career marked by failed marriages and drug abuse, and re-invented himself more than once, most famously alongside Lady Gaga, proving he could stay relevant and successful through different eras.

Elton John was among the many who paid tribute:

Bennett has a few film appearances on his resume, including 1966’s ‘The Oscar’ about a snooty actor who becomes even more full of himself when he’s nominated for the titular award.

He also has credits in the likes of ‘Analyze This’, ‘Casino’, ‘The Scout’, ‘Bruce Almighty’ and ‘Muppets Most Wanted’. And his music has appeared on the soundtrack of too many movies to count, but some memorable examples include ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, ‘Swingers’, ‘JFK’ and ‘Raging Bull’.

Here’s what music historian John Edward Hasse had to say about Bennett:

“Tony Bennett possessed one of the great voices and singing careers of the last 60 years. Not very many singers, much less musicians, have achieved that kind of durability. He’s got a jazz musician’s phrasing and sense of timing, as well as a feeling for spontaneity. These are classic, timeless aesthetic values that he personifies.”

‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Stars Want to Do a Sequel

Say a little prayer for this to happen!

Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney are both down for a sequel to “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Now we just need Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett to jump on board. Oh, and it would be nice to have a script — so maybe Ronald Bass can whip another something up, with P.J. Hogan returning to direct?

“My Best Friend’s Wedding” came out in 1997, with Roberts as anti-heroine Julianne Potter — who tried her best/worst to sabotage the wedding of her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) to sweet Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). She failed.

But through it all was her real BFF George (Rupert Everett), and maybe that’s the pair we could focus on in the sequel? Maybe George gets married and Julianne gets jealous again? Or maybe George gets jealous if Julianne plans a wedding? Or follow a wedding for one of Kimmy’s fun twin bridesmaids (played by Rachel Griffiths and Carrie Preston)?

Anyway, someone should come up with something good now that Roberts has the door open.

Julia Roberts is on this week’s cover of Entertainment Weekly to promote her new Amazon show “Homecoming,” which also features Dermot Mulroney. EW asked which of her films she’d like to revisit for a sequel, if she could. Here’s her response:

“A lot of people want to follow up with Vivian [of ‘Pretty Woman’].”

But she said she’s like to see where the “Wedding” characters are today.

“I guess I think maybe it’s just because we’re talking about Dermot. But Rupert was so funny in ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding.’ I guess Kimmy and Michael are married and they probably have kids. And then there’s me and Rupert.”

Mulroney told EW he’d like to revisit the team too:

“I’ll tell you that movie has wormed its way further and further under my skin, and I see more and more layers of how it holds meaning and sustains as a piece, and obviously it’s always been irresistible. I think there’s only about four people on Earth that could make a movie like that, and they include Rupert, Cameron, Julia, and me. So, let’s have at it.”

Maybe a bit more than four since you’ll need a script and director, never mind the rest of the production crew.

Speaking of the script, did you know the movie had a different original ending? Apparently test audiences didn’t like it, so they went back months later to shoot the current ending.

What do you think of checking in on these characters more than 20 years later? Obviously we’ll need more songs, dances, and Kimmy’s adorably bad karaoke:

  • 9 Things You Never Knew About ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’

It’s been 20 years since the beloved Julia Roberts favorite “My Best Friend’s Wedding” hit theaters, and you probably still have “I Say a Little Prayer” stuck in your head.

The classic rom-com was released June 20, 1997, and earned some critical acclaim and box office success. It catapulted Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett to fame and solidified Roberts as one of Hollywood’s most popular (and bankable) leading ladies.

Even though Julianne Potter’s last ditch efforts to win over her BFF before he ties the knot to someone else are morally questionable, we still can’t get enough of this delightful romance. Here are nine things you (probably) didn’t know about the film.
    1. It’s hard to imagine the movie without Julia Roberts as the lead, but the role of Julianne was originally offered to Sex and the City.”

    2. Cameron Diaz became a household name after playing bride-to-be Kimberly Wallace to perfection, after Julia Roberts suggested her for the part. Cameron’s real-life bestie, Drew Barrymore, also read for the role of Kimberly.3. Rupert Everett’s role as George was originally supposed to be much smaller. After the studio tested the film, he ended up being so beloved by audiences that the producers gave him a bigger part.

    4. Julianne was supposed to end up in the arms of a new beau in the form of John Corbett, but that ending didn’t test well with audiences. Enter Rupert Everett to say the day! Julianne and Rupert dance together, which made the final cut.5. The film was nominated for one Oscar — Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett both earned Golden Globe nominations for their performances and the film was nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

    6. 1997 was a major standout year for summer blockbusters, and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” was one of the year’s top-grossing films. It was a global box office smash, too, ranking eighth among the highest-grossing films of the year.
    7. Sequel? Probably not. In 2001, producer Jerry Zucker said there were talks going around about the concept of “My Best Friend’s Divorce,” which would find Kimmy and Michael (Dermot Mulroney) on the verge of a split, but they couldn’t make it work.

    8. A TV reboot was in the works for ABC back in 2015, which picked up where the movie left off. Unfortunately, the project didn’t get off the ground.
    9. A Chinese remake of the film was released in 2016.

  • 12 Reasons Why 1997 Was the Best Summer for Movies Ever

If you look back at the movies that were released May through September of 1997, your initial reaction will probably be, “whoa, those all came out in the same year?!” And what a year it was.

From “Men in Black” to “The Fifth Element,” that year gave us was one heck of a blockbuster season. The (fictional) President of the United States went full “Die Hard” when his plane was hijacked, and Nic Cage went full action hero — twice. Oh, what a time to be alive.

Here are 12 reasons why we’ll always be grateful for the films of summer ’97.

  • How ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Originally Ended Julia Roberts’s Story

Say a little prayer that the makers of “My Best Friend’s Wedding” changed the ending of the movie at the last minute.

Director P.J. Hogan revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the classic 1997 romantic comedy had a completely different ending — that nobody liked.

The final version ends with Julianne (Julia Roberts) giving up on her quest to ruin the wedding of best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) and bride Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). At the reception, she is surprised when gay pal George (Rupert Everett) shows up to dance with her.

Originally, Hogan said that Julianne meets a new man in the final scene, played by John Corbett. But test audiences hate it. “They wanted her dead,” he admitted, for her vicious actions toward Kimmy earlier in the movie.

To make Julianne more empathetic to the audience — while still giving the studio a happy ending for Roberts — Hogan and team expanded the character of George.

“Every time Julianne talked to him, she’d explain why she was doing these terrible things,” he noted. “He’s her conscience throughout.”

They ended up shooting a new ending eight months after production wrapped. Roberts had to wear a wig over a new pixie cut.

“It would have been such a downer of an ending if George hadn’t shown up,” Hogan said. “That one scene somehow gave the audience permission to forgive Julianne. Those last five minutes really made the whole movie work.”

  • ABC Developing ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ TV Series

My Best Friend's WeddingSay a little prayer, “My Best Friend’s Wedding” fans — the beloved 1997 romcom might be getting a TV sequel.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, ABC is developing a half-hour, single-camera comedy based on the popular movie starring Julia Roberts. The show would pick up where the movie left off: Julianne Potter returning home to New York with gay BFF George (Rupert Everett in the film) as her supportive guide. The original movie’s writer, Ron Bass, will pen the script.

“My Best Friend’s Wedding” is just the latest Hollywood property to get a reboot/prequel/sequel.
