Marvel is gunning hard for “Black Panther” to be considered for several major awards at next month’s Oscars ceremony, while its other huge 2018 release, “Avengers: Infinity War” will only be submitted in the visual effects category. But the just-announced nominations from the Visual Effects Society Awards prove that “Infinity War” is already the early favorite to claim the Academy’s statuette.
The VES Awards nominees, announced on Tuesday, were led by “Infinity War,” which nabbed six nods from the group. It will compete against “Ready Player One,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin,” and “Welcome to Marwen” for the top prize, outstanding visual effects in a photo-real feature.
In a surprise move, the VES awards snubbed two other releases that seem poised for Oscar nods: “Black Panther” and “Mary Poppins Returns.” Neither of those flicks earned a single nomination Tuesday, though both are expected to compete in the more high-profile Oscar categories (including Best Picture and Best Actress, respectively).
The top animated feature contender was “Incredibles 2,” while “Lost in Space” earned the most nominations for a TV series. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on February 5, hosted by Patton Oswalt.

The film is officially set to arrive on the streamer on Dec. 25. Its agreement with Disney is ending in 2020, as Variety reports, so Netflix won’t get any MCU flicks released in 2019. Instead, they’ll later stream on Disney+, a service the company is launching next year. In the meantime, Netflix subscribers will be able to assemble with the Avengers.
The film’s Netflix release comes as fans are waiting for more “Avengers 4” developments. They’ve been calling for its official title and trailer, but so far neither has come. In fact, one of the film’s directors, Joe Russo, recently suggested the first preview might not come till 2019.
With “Avengers: Infinity War” becoming available on Netflix soon, fans will at least have a chance to watch the superhero flick to their hearts’ content and, of course, hunt for clues.
You want more Loki, including more Tom Hiddleston? You got it. Or you may get it, if Variety‘s report pans out.
Variety is a pretty trusted source, so “Avengers” fans should feel free to get their hopes up fairly high.
According to Variety, Disney’s upcoming streaming service “is in early development on an ambitious plan for a number of limited series centered on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These series will likely include shows centered on Loki and the Scarlet Witch, along with other beloved superheroes who have yet to appear in their own standalone movies.”
Variety added that the original MCU stars — including Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch — are expected to play the characters in the Disney streaming shows. Each show is expected to have six to eight episodes, the site added, and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is expected to have a hands-on role in each show’s development.
Sounds pretty awesome from here.
Marvel Studios
It’s not clear if, say, Loki’s series would be a prequel set before “Avengers: Infinity War” or if fans should REALLY get their hopes up and it’s set after the events of “Infinity War” and maybe also “Avengers 4.”
Insiders emphasized to Variety that “Avengers” characters/stars that have gotten their own movies will not get their own series. This will focus on “characters who have served as second tier characters in the MCU.”
It may also be a sign that these characters will not get their own standalone movies. But what about a character like Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan)? Would he get his own series on the Disney streaming service, or will Marvel Studios give him his own standalone series at some point in one of the next MCU phases?
At any rate, this Disney streamer just keeps sounding better — and yet worse to our wallets. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO, etc. Can we get a streaming tax break? There’s no word yet on when the Marvel series would start production or premiere. The Disney streamer itself doesn’t even have an official launch date, other than 2019. But last we heard, Netflix will stop getting Disney/Marvel family shows starting with “Captain Marvel.”
Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers series doesn’t pass up an opportunity to spoof a hit movie, and the time finally came for it to tackle “Avengers: Infinity War.”
Given that there were 19 movies leading up to the superhero flick, there was a lot for the video to deal with — a fact that Screen Junkies didn’t ignore. The narrator almost immediately highlights the film’s scale, calling it it “without a doubt, the most movie Marvel’s ever made.” From there, we get to “look at all that movie,” which includes a rundown of the most important characters.
As you can imagine, it takes a long time to go through all the superheroes, but it’s enjoyable and, of course, funny. It all leads up to a recap of the plot, complete with entertaining nods to the internet’s love for Thanos and the narrator’s take on all of the movie’s deaths.

Thora Birch also stars in the film, which comes with director’s commentary by Eric Bross, plus deleted scenes, and a trailer gallery.

“Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich”
This horror film will be available on VOD and Digital HD this Friday, August 17. “When Edgar finds a nefarious looking puppet, he decides to sell the doll at a convention. All hell breaks loose when a strange force animates the puppets, setting them on a bloody killing spree that’s motivated by an evil as old as time.” Honestly this movie is totally outrageous and not for the faint of heart. You’ve been warned. Michael Paré, Udo Kier, Barbara Crampton, Thomas Lennon, Jenny Pellicer, Nelson Franklin, Charlyne Yi, and Matthias Hues star.
This teen romantic comedy, based on the novel, by Jenny Han arrives August 17. “When her secret love letters somehow get mailed to each of her five crushes, Laura Jean (Lana Condor) finds her quiet high school existence turned upside down.” Total nightmare! Watch the trailer.

“The Investigator: A British Crime Story” Season 2 (Netflix Original)

In Season 2, the series “sheds new light on the decades-old case of Carole Packman, whose husband was convicted of her murder, even though her body was never found.”
The so-bad-it’s-good franchise is coming to a sharktastic end this week. “Sharknado 6” — aka “The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time” — airs August 19, starring Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, Cassandra Scerbo, Vivica A. Fox, and Judah Friedlander. With humor and curiosity, New York Times correspondent Thomas Erdbrin shares a rare journey into a private Iran often at odds with its conservative clerics and leaders.
“Shades of Blue” (Sunday on NBC at 10 p.m.)
This is it. Jennifer Lopez‘s crime drama “Shades of Blue” airs its series finale August 19. Season 3, Episode 10 is called “By Virtue Fall”: “Harlee (Jennifer Lopez) faces a police commission as Wozniak (Ray Liotta) and the crew scramble to help her from the outside.”
But that’s why Benedict Cumberbatch is a true superhero. Because Tom Holland would’ve shared even MORE spoilers if Doctor Strange weren’t there to shut Spider-Man down at key moments.
“Avengers: Infinity War” directors Anthony and Joe Russo are now promoting the film’s Digital release, and upcoming August 14 Blu-ray release. They were asked about Tom Holland in the film, and then about Tom Holland outside of the film.
ET reporter: “How do you feel that Tom Holland spent the entire press tour spoiling aspects of the movie over and over?”
Joe Russo [laughs]: “What are you gonna do? You know. He’s the nicest guy in the world. So you can never be punitive towards Tom Holland.”
Reporter: “People made supercuts of it, which was my favorite thing.”
Joe Russo: “Of everything he spoiled? Was it like 15 minutes long?”
Reporter: “It was him and Benedict Cumberbatch, and Benedict Cumberbatch just being like [blocking Tom Holland to shut him up.]”
Joe Russo: “By the way, Benedict is a great partner for him on the press tour. Because Benedict is actually very good at dancing around spoilers — and monitoring Tom Holland.”
If you want your life to be perfectly balanced — as all things should be — you need to get “Avengers: Infinity War” on digital when it’s released tomorrow (Tuesday, July 31).
The release — including on Blu-ray August 14 — comes with more than two hours of bonus features.
People just premiered a clip from Marvel’s always-hilarious gag reel. The blooper reel is about 2 minutes long in full on digital/Blu-ray. Apparently Paul Bettany is a repeat offender!
You should also watch this great deleted scene fight between Star-Lord and Drax, with Drax getting confused about a blinking yellow light with important secret coded messages. “You said ‘If it was yellow let it mellow.’”

Marvel had already revealed the Digital HD release date of Tuesday, July 31 –with Tuesday, August 14 mentioned for the DVD/Blu-ray/4K release — but then Marvel deleted its digital tweets. So it wasn’t clear whether they were changing the dates or just wanted to keep fans’ attention focused on going to the theater to buy tickets.
But on Monday Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) confirmed the 7/31 and 8/14 release dates in a funny Winter Soldier “screen test” photo:

Could’ve been worse. At least he’s still Number 1, not Number 2.
As you know, many fans have been giving Peter Quill/Star-Lord a hard time after the events of “Avengers: Infinity War,” although the directors said fans should be equally mad at this guy.
Here are some kinder, gentler birthday wishes for Pratt:
Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard’s “Jurassic World” sequel is now in theaters. Pratt, Evans, and Zoe Saldana can be seen in “Avengers: Infinity War,” also now in theaters.
