  • ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Casts 8 New Roles, Including Nicholas Flamel

The sequel to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” just revealed eight new characters, although Jessica Williams’ role is still being kept secret.

Pottermore, author/screenwriter J.K. Rowling’s official site, announced the new characters and cast members:

Brontis Jodorowsky will play Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist who discovered the Elixir of Life, whom fans will remember from the very first book and film, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Flamel was also a close friend of Albus Dumbledore, and Dumbledore was the one who suggested Flamel to put the Sorcerer’s Stone in Gringotts Wizarding Bank before Dumbledore moved the stone to Hogwarts for further protection.

    • Wolf Roth will play a character called Spielman.

    • Victoria Yeates as Bunty.

    • Derek Riddell as Torquil Travers.

    • Poppy Corby-Tuech as Rosier.

    • Cornell S John as Arnold Guzman.

    • Jessica Williams of “The Daily Show” and Netflix’s “The Incredible Jessica James” is playing a character to be revealed later.

    • Fiona Glascott as a character who will also be revealed later

Pottermore reminded fans that the last names “Travers” and “Rosier” should stand out since the “Harry Potter” book series mentioned them as Death Eaters who served Lord Voldemort. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them backing the pre-Moldy Voldy dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).

Premiere Of Netflix Original Film 'The Incredible Jessica James' At The 2017 Essence FestivalThe new cast members join original stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, and Carmen Ejogo as President of MACUSA Seraphina Picquery. Jude Law is joining the cast as Albus Dumbledore, with Callum Turner as Newt’s brother Theseus, and Zoë Kravitz as Newt’s old friend/something more, Leta Lestrange.

Other previously announced new characters include a bounty hunter called Grimmson, played by Icelandic actor Ingvar Sigurdsson; William Nadylam as a wizard called Yusuf Kama; Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Skender, the owner of a wizarding circus; and Claudia Kim as one of the circus’s “featured attractions.” Pottermore also previously mentioned the film holding open calls for five teenage roles — the young versions of Newt, Leta, Gellert, Albus, and a new character named Sebastian.

'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' World Premiere“Fantastic Beasts 2” — which will reveal its official title later — will be set in 1927, months after Newt helped in the capture of Grindelwald, and set in London, Paris, and New York. Dumbledore will team up with Newt and his friends to take on Grindelwald, who’ll make a “dramatic escape” from MACUSA custody. According to Pottermore, Grindelwald has been busy “gathering more followers to his cause – elevating wizards above all non-magical beings.”

Principal photography on the sequel started in July, and the movie is scheduled for release November 16, 2018.

  • ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Plot & Character Details Revealed as Filming Begins

It’s time for the second adventure to begin! Principal photography just started today on the sequel to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” and Warner Bros. celebrated with new details on the film — doled out in a creative way, of course.

J.K. Rowling’s site Pottermore tweeted out teasers with separate stories sharing various information:

In “Fantastic Beasts 2” — which will reveal its official title later — Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) will team up with Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to take on Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).

Grindelwald will “make a dramatic escape” from MACUSA custody, forcing Dumbledore to join the wizarding world’s efforts to stop him. According to Pottermore, the villainous Grindelwald has been busy “gathering more followers to his cause – elevating wizards above all non-magical beings.” Dumbledore will look to his former student Newt for help, and Newt will again be joined by Queenie and Tina Goldstein in the next film, as well as his No-Maj friend Jacob Kowalski, and many new characters. (Also, Credence will be back, in a “mysterious” way.)

New characters include a bounty hunter called Grimmson, played by Icelandic actor Ingvar Sigurdsson; William Nadylam as a wizard called Yusuf Kama; Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Skender, the owner of a wizarding circus and Claudia Kim as one of the circus’s “featured attractions.” It was also confirmed that Callum Turner will play Newt’s “war hero and Auror” older brother, Theseus Scamander, while Zoë Kravitz returns as Leta Lestrange, who was seen briefly in a moving photo in the first movie.

The sequel is set in 1927, months after Newt helped in the capture of Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, and Warner Bros. confirmed that the film will be set in New York, London, and Paris.

“Fantastic Beasts 2” is scheduled for release, directed by David Yates, on November 16, 2018.

  • ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Open Casting Roles for Teen Dumbledore, Grindelwald, Newt, Leta

The sequel to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” already cast a young-ish Albus Dumbledore in Jude Law, but now it’s looking for an even younger one — plus four other teens, presumably for the characters’s Hogwarts years.

Pottermore, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s site, announced the news that Warner Bros. is holding open calls for five teenage roles in “Fantastic Beasts 2”:

“The studio is looking for young people to play five new roles in the film, including teenage incarnations of Newt Scamander, Leta Lestrange, Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore.

An open casting call has gone out for three actors between the ages of 13 and 16 to play young versions of Newt, Leta, and another character called Sebastian.

They are also looking for actors between 16 and 18 to portray both Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore as teenagers.”

As a reminder, Leta Lestrange was mentioned in the first “Fantastic Beasts” movie as having a “close friendship” with Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) at Hogwarts, and her photo (featuring actress Zoe Kravitz) was seen at Newt’s workshop.

And, as you know, Dumbledore and Grindelwald (played by Johnny Depp in the sequel) were good friends as teens, meeting after Grindelwald was expelled from Durmstrang, then became powerful rivals. No clue who Sebastian is, but welcome to the fold.

So they seem to be looking for young teen versions of Zoe Kravitz and Eddie Redmayne, and slightly older teen versions of Jude Law and Johnny Depp.

To apply, you have to be eligible to work in the United Kingdom and be available to film between August and November 2017, which gives a hint to the filming timetable. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, June 20. Further details are available at Pottermore. “Fantastic Beasts 2” (or whatever they eventually call it) is meant to start filming this summer for a scheduled release date of November 16, 2018.

Last we heard, Callum Turner, 27, was in talks to play Newt Scamander’s brother in the sequel, but we’ll have to stay tuned for details on the official cast, once these roles are booked.

  • ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Casts Newt Scamander’s Brother: Report

Eddie Redmayne, meet your new brother!

The sequel to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” starts filming this summer, and Variety reports British actor Callum Turner, 27, will play Newt’s bro. There were no further details on the role, other than that the “War & Peace,” “Green Room,” “Victor Frankenstein,” and “Assassin’s Creed” star was in talks for the role.

Burberry AW14 Menswear Show - ArrivalsRedmayne will return in “Fantastic Beasts 2” (we don’t know if it’ll get a new title beyond that), along with Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald, and Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, in the next story set decades before the “Harry Potter” films.

Author J.K. Rowling wrote the first “Fantastic Beasts” script and she also wrote this sequel, and David Yates will return as director. The second film will move the story from New York to Paris and the U.K. According to Pottermore, the sequel “takes the story deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt and our other heroes must decide on their allegiances.” This will be the second of five planned films in the “Fantastic Beasts” series.

“Fantastic Beasts 2” — also starring Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, and Zoë Kravitz — is currently scheduled for release November 16, 2018.

  • ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Fans Can Now Buy Their Own Nifflers … for a Price

If you’re closer to Weasley than Malfoy when it comes to galleons, you might need to break into Gringotts before attempting to buy one of the cute new plush Nifflers now available.

“Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” author J.K. Rowling tweeted the good news for fans who want their own stuffed versions of the shiny-treasure-loving “Beast.” However, U.S. fans will have to go the extra mile on shipping costs.

Over at Platform 9 3/4, you can pre-order a Niffler Plush for £35, which is just over $43. However, as CinemaBlend calculated, U.S. fans will also have to pay an extra £20 (just over $24) for packaging. So this stuffed animal is on the expensive side, unless you’re one of those people who regularly spends big bucks trying to win “free” stuffed prizes at fairs. For you, this might be a bargain.

According to the site, the Niffler is approximately 22cm, and delivery is estimated for the start of May.

Maybe if you just start leaving shiny bits of jewelry outside you can attract your own Niffler without having to pay for shipping.

  • The ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Honest Trailer Is Full of Harry Potter Digressions

The Harry Potter comparisons may never end for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

Screen Junkies released the latest Honest Trailers video, and it is almost as much homage to Harry Potter fandom as it is a critique of the first film in J.K. Rowling’s newest series. Of course, the two are so intertwined that it’s to be expected. As the trailer reminds us, “Fantastic Beasts” is a movie “based on a real fake textbook, based on a fake real textbook, briefly mentioned in two real Harry Potter books.”

Throughout the video, we get to see fun Harry Potter throwbacks, from footage from the movies to what their stars are doing now. The narrator even takes a quick timeout to find his Patronus again on Pottermore. By the end, “Fantastic Beasts” hasn’t been overlooked completely, but Harry Potter does certainly grab some of its spotlight — which is pretty fitting.

    Watch the full video below.

Anyone else want to check out their Patronus again now, too?

  • J.K. Rowling Shares Cryptic ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel Script Photo

'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' European Premiere - Red Carpet ArrivalsIt looks like prolific author and newly-minted screenwriter J.K. Rowling may have already completed yet another script for an upcoming sequel to last year’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” proving that the writer is definitely ready to share more stories from the Wizarding World.

Rowling shared on Twitter a cryptic photo of what appears to be the cover of a script for another film in the planned five-movie “Fantastic Beasts” franchise (a prequel to the massively popular “Harry Potter” stories), spurring speculation that she’s now completed work on the third feature in the series. Of course, in typical Rowling fashion, the teasing image doesn’t exactly give anything away — or really, even reveal what it truly is — only including the text “Written by J.K. Rowling,” and some legalese from studio Warner Bros.

There’s no visible title, and Rowling’s caption was also pretty vague, simply stating, “Having a Beastly day.” Still, considering that she’d already completed the script for the second film in the franchise before the first even hit theaters, it stands to reason that this is an announcement that the writer is now done with the third film, too. (Another possibility: It could be revealing that production on “Fantastic Beasts 2” is about to start.)

Rowling shocked fans — and even the film’s stars — last fall when she announced that the “Fantastic Beasts” series, originally planned as a trilogy, would instead consist of five movies. The cast has since assured fans that Rowling has a clear, epic vision for these stories, and based on the pace at which she’s completing work on scripts, it looks like the author can’t wait to tell them.

We can’t wait, either. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2” is due in theaters sometime in 2018. No word yet on when the third flick may debut.

  • BAFTA Nominations Hail ‘La La Land,’ ‘Arrival,’ ‘Fantastic Beasts’

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts released its slate of nominees for the best films of 2016 on Tuesday, hailing current awards season favorites as well as some outliers that have so far flown under the radar this year.

It’s no surprise that recent juggernaut “La La Land” racked up the most BAFTA nominations, scoring 11 nods including best film, director, original screenplay, actor, and actress, as well as citations in a bunch of technical categories. Tied for second place with nine nominations apiece were “Arrival” and “Nocturnal Animals,” with recent surprise Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson receiving another nod for the latter film.

“Harry Potter” spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” also racked up an impressive number of nominations, with citations in five categories, including Outstanding British Film. But “Potter” author J.K. Rowling missed out on a screenwriting nod for her feature film debut, and also failed to earn a spot among nominees in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer category.

  • J.K. Rowling Reveals Christmas Gift to Wizard-Lovers on Her New Website

BRITAIN-ENTERTAINMENT-FILM-CINEMA-FANTASTIC BEASTSDid you think J.K. Rowling forgot to get you something this Christmas? Our wizard queen would never do that. However, the “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” author didn’t quite get you something original, she just announced her new and improved website — JKRowling.com — and welcomed fans to it with a fresh list of FAQ answers.

Here’s part of her “Welcome to My New Website” post (which includes the promise of a future “debunking function”):

“2016 has been one of the busiest professional years of my life. I didn’t plan for the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them to come out in the same year, but that’s what ended up happening, with the result that 2016 meant an almost total re-immersion in the wizarding world. I’ve been absolutely delighted with the reception of both pieces: the stakes are always very high when you return to a well-loved creation, and after almost a decade of refusing to do spin-offs or remakes, I feel overwhelming relief that both long-time fans and newcomers have enjoyed what we’ve done. Pottermore.com, the digital hub for the wizarding world, does a great job catering for anyone who wants to dig deeper into that world. […]

With four more Beasts movies to come, I decided my Christmas gift to wizard-lovers should be to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the plot of the new franchise. There’s also a bonus FAQ, an oldie about Chamber of Secrets that I’ve been asked at least once a week for nine years.”

So that’s the gift — answers. Here are some of the FAQ, including SPOILERS FROM “FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM.”

Why couldn’t Newt just Apparate to the USA? Why did he go by boat?
Apparition becomes increasingly risky over long distances. As with most magic, much depends on the skill of the spell-caster: Apparition requires knowledge of the terrain to which one is moving, or the ability to visualise it clearly. Cross-continental Apparition would almost certainly result in severe injury or death. Moreover, the beasts in Newt’s case had varying magical natures. Some could have Apparated with him, but others could not.

Why couldn’t Newt use ‘Accio’ to retrieve all his beasts?
‘Accio’ only works on inanimate objects. While people or creatures may be indirectly moved by ‘Accio-ing’ objects that they are wearing or holding, this carries all kinds of risks because of the likelihood of injury to the person or beast attached to an object travelling at close to the speed of light.

Why isn’t Veritaserum used in interrogations?
It is, but skilled wizards can avoid its effects by using antidotes and charms. A gifted Occlumens could also resist Veritaserum.

Why didn’t Harry Potter develop an Obscurus?
An Obscurus is developed under very specific conditions: trauma associated with the use of magic, internalized hatred of one’s own magic and a conscious attempt to suppress it. The Dursleys were too frightened of magic ever to acknowledge its existence to Harry. While Vernon and Petunia had a confused hope that if they were nasty enough to Harry his strange abilities might somehow evaporate, they never taught him to be ashamed or afraid of magic. Even when he was scolded for ‘making things happen’, he didn’t make any attempt to suppress his true nature, nor did he ever imagine that he had the power to do so.

Why wasn’t the Horcrux inside Harry destroyed when he was bitten by the Basilisk in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”?
A Horcrux can only be destroyed if its container is damaged beyond repair. Harry was healed by Fawkes. Had he died, the Horcrux would indeed have been destroyed.

Rowling is also still answering more questions on Twitter, correcting misunderstandings, etc. That is her daily gift to fans:

Perhaps our gift back to her should be a break from the constant stream of questions!

  • ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequels Won’t All Have Newt Scamander as Main Character

    Fantastic Beasts
The wizarding world of J.K. Rowling is getting even deeper and more complicated!

The author herself tweeted some interesting tidbits about the upcoming “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” sequels, including the detail that the franchise would cover events over two decades. And now producer David Heyman has revealed even more intriguing info — like the fact that Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander won’t necessarily be the center of the following movies!

“I don’t think [Newt will be at] the heart of all of them,” Heyman told Cinema Blend. “I think he’ll be part — so will Tina, Queenie and Jacob — will be part of the next one.”

With the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise spanning two decades in time, through World War II, it makes sense that Newt wouldn’t always be the lead character (unless they use some amazing aging makeup on Redmayne). Instead, it looks like the additional movies will focus on some other, familiar characters.

And now, some spoilers ahead for the first movie — if you haven’t seen it, beware!

When asked if a young Dumbledore being cast, Heyman replied, “And Credence and Grindelwald. I think they will be the main players.”

Johnny Depp plays Gellart Grindelwald, who is locked up after the events of the first movie. And while Credence was presumably killed, a bit of his Obscurus magic seemed to have escaped. Perhaps it will follow Newt back to Europe and cause more havoc — and perhaps pull in one young Dumbledore.
