  • Tom Cruise Closes Deal for ‘Mission: Impossible 6’

Mission ImpossibleGuess they showed him the money.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Cruise has nearly closed a deal with Paramount to return in “Mission: Impossible 6” after contentious salary negotiations halted pre-production last month. Cruise reportedly wanted to make as much as he did for Universal’s “The Mummy,” but Paramount balked at upping back-end profits for Cruise and fellow producers Bad Robot and Skydance.

But THR now says that “issues have been resolved” and the movie is moving forward with filming beginning in spring 2017. It’s unclear if Cruise got the money he wanted, but considering the last two “Mission” movies each earned nearly $700 million worldwide, he definitely had the leverage.

Christopher McQuarrie, who directed “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” will return to the helm. Rebecca Ferguson, who played Ilsa Faust in “Rogue Nation,” is also set to reprise her role.

  • ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Has Stalled Over Tom Cruise’s Pay: Report

    Show him the money!

The next “Mission: Impossible” movie has halted pre-production, The Hollywood Reporter was told, because of a dispute over Tom Cruise‘s paycheck. The actor is now shooting “The Mummy” and sources told THR he wants to match or exceed what he’s getting paid by Universal for that movie. Apparently back-end profit participation is a point of contention, and since the last two “Mission: Impossible” movies both made nearly $700 million around the world — and were also big hits with critics — he’s probably hoping the sixth film in the franchise does even better and he can take home even more pay.

    And why not?

He’s a producer as well as the main star, and he’s known for doing his own stunts, and promoting the holy heck out of each movie. And even though Ethan Hunt’s name isn’t a focal point — like Jason Bourne, James Bond, Jack Ryan, or Jack Reacher (why always a J-guy?) — it’s hard to imagine pulling off a successful MI movie without Tom Cruise.

The movie was prepping for a January 2017, with Christopher McQuarrie writing and directing. THR said this is the second delay for “Mission: Impossible 6” after script issues reportedly pushed the start month from November to January. Actually, last summer Cruise said they had hoped to start shooting MI6 this summer, and that didn’t happen. Now it’s not clear when production will start and if the potential blockbuster will still hit its target of a late 2017 release date.

In April, Cruise promised MI6 would have “… more incredible set pieces, stunts…and what I think is a very entertaining and compelling story.” We look forward to seeing it, and hope it doesn’t self-destruct before we get the chance.

  • ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Tops Box Office for Second Week

    straight-1024x5718-1024x5713

“Straight Outta Compton” easily outperformed three new movies to remain the American box office leader for a second week, according to estimates Sunday.

The biopic about the rap group N.W.A. brought in another $26.7 million over the weekend to bring its total to more than $111 million.

The next film was a holdover, Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” with $11.7 million for second.

Of the new wide releases, the horror pic “Sinister 2” brought in $10.6 million for third and “Hitman: Agent 47” had $8.2 million for fourth while “America Ultra” collected only $5.5 million for sixth despite the reunion of “Adventureland’s” Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg.

“The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” finished fifth in its second week with $7.4 million.

  • Rebecca Ferguson May Join Emily Blunt in ‘The Girl on the Train’

Rebecca Ferguson’s movie career is taking off like a locomotive.

After pulling a scene-stealing performance opposite Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” she’s negotiating a role in DreamWorks’ “The Girl on the Train,” Deadline reports.

The 31-year-old will play Anna, who finds herself in an affair with a married man in the Paula Hawkins novel. The big screen adaptation is directed by Tate Taylor.

Emily Blunt plays the narrator – a divorcee who fantasizes about a seemingly perfect couple who live in a house along her daily commute.

Ferguson will appear next in the biopic “Florence Foster Jenkins,” a comedy that stars Meryl Streep in the titular role as a New York heiress who becomes a famous opera singer, despite her lack of talent. Hugh Grants stars as St. Clair Bayfield, her partner and manager, and Ferguson plays his suffering wife Kathleen Weatherly Bayfield.

  • ‘Fantastic Four’ Fizzles at Box Office, Loses to ‘Mission: Impossible’

    "Fantastic Four" New York Premiere

The superhero reboot “Fantastic Four” flopped at the box office, opening with only $26.2 million and casting doubt on whether the 20th Century Fox franchise will continue, according to estimates Sunday.

“This turned into a nightmare for Fox,” Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations, tells Variety. “Everything that could go wrong went wrong and the whole thing fell apart.”

Despite a promising young cast of Miles Teller, Kate Mara and Michael B. Jordan, “Fantastic Four” couldn’t overcome bad reviews, including a slam from its own director, as it failed to unseat “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” atop the U.S. box office.

The fifth “MI” movie starring Tom Cruise collected $29.4 million in its second week to bring its total to $108.7 million.

“The Gift” finished third with $12 million, a great showing for the $5 million-budgeted film.

  • How Tom Cruise Got Director Hired in 10 Minutes

If the superstar of a blockbuster franchise wants something, he gets it. So when Tom Cruise called the Hollywood heavy hitters behind “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” with his handpicked selection for its director, he got it. Fast.

“He left the room and came back 10 minutes later with the phone in his hand and said, ‘Okay, you’re directing the next ‘Mission: Impossible.’ And that was it,” director Christopher McQuarrie tells Made in Hollywood.

There’s little to wonder why Cruise was eager to have McQuarrie join him for his fifth turn in the action flick. Previously they collaborated on 2012’s “Jack Reacher,” and when McQuarrie was working on the script for 2014’s “Edge of Tomorrow,” of which Cruise starred opposite Emily Blunt, the 53-year-old actor made the suggestion during a creative session one night.

When McQuarrie agreed, rather casually, to take on role as director, he was surprised that Cruise wasted no time in enlisting him for work. “I figured that that would be a conversation we would have later,” McQuarrie recalls.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” co-starring Alec Baldwin, Rebecca Fergusson, Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner opened last Friday. Watch the trailer below.

In his nearly 20 years of surviving explosions, violating the laws of gravity and thwarting evildoers — all without a stunt double — his Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt continues more spectacular death defying feats in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.”

Of course, “Rogue Nation” sees the Hollywood star performing one of his most dangerous maneuvers yet—hanging off the side of an airplane while in flight.

Watch our roundup of some of the best stunts he has performed in all five films in the franchise, and feel free to add some of your favorite moments in the comments.

  • ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’ Opens with $56 Million at Box Office

    tombikeMission: Accomplished.

Tom Cruise and his Impossible Mission Force bested already-high expectations to debut atop the U.S. box office this weekend with $56 million, according to estimates Sunday.

That gave “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” one of the best three-day openings of the five movies in the franchise and restored the 53-year-old Cruise to bankable action star status with his third-best debut after “Mission: Impossible II” and “War of the Worlds.”

Despite opening two days earlier on Wednesday, “Vacation” fell short of projections to finish with $21.2 million over the five-day period, though the Ed Helms-starring film’s modest $30 million should ensure that the raunchy comedy ends in the black.

Returnees “Ant-Man” and “Minions” followed with $12 million-plus each while “Pixels” petered out with $10.4 million and “Paper Towns” fizzled with $4.6 million.

  • Why Tom Cruise’s Driving Made Simon Pegg Want to Scream

As the resident intelligence analyst in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, Simon Pegg rarely has to step in harm’s way. But in “Rogue Nation,” the fifth sequel, the British star found himself in a seemingly precarious high-speed car chase sequence.

Luckily, with adrenalin junkie Tom Cruise behind the wheel, Pegg had nothing to fear.

“He’s an extraordinary driver—as good if not better than anybody else on the driving team for the stunt crew,” Pegg tells Made in Hollywood. “Tom did all the driving and we are driving at those speeds.”

Pegg insists that although he appears to be scared out of his wits in the scene, in truth it was spine tingling.

“I wasn’t terrified in that I thought I was going to die, but it was like being on a roller coaster—which you always scream on,” he explains, clarifying, “a very safe roller coaster. It was brilliant fun.”

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” hit theaters Friday. Watch the trailer below.

  • Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible’ Airplane Stunt Began as a Joke

Tom Cruise dangles precariously off the side of an airplane while in flight in one of the most heart-pounding stunts featured in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.”

In theory it seemed like what the action-thriller’s title suggests: Impossible. But in reality, it was nothing more than an off-the-cuff comment said in jest. Still, the 53-year-old was undaunted by the challenge.

“It was a joke,” director Christopher McQuarrie tells Made in Hollywood. “We were looking at a model of the plane and I said, ‘What if you were on the side of that (plane) when it took off?”

But the daredevil actor didn’t laugh.

“Tom didn’t blink,” McQuarrie reveals. “He said, ‘Yeah, I can do that.’”

Known for performing his own stunts, it meant that bringing the feat to fruition would involve many resources to ensure his safety.

“On ‘Mission Impossible’ when you make a suggestion like that people immediately start making phone calls, taking notes,” McQuarrie explains.

The director, who previously teamed with Cruise on 2012’s “Jack Reacher,” says aerospace company Airbus had a rather dubious reaction to the inquiry.

“They were a little skeptical at first,” he says, clarifying, “I’d say cautious.” He continues: “They didn’t know that it was a terribly good idea, but once they got into crunching the numbers and figuring out the engineering, actually, I think they started to have fun.”

What resulted was the Hollywood star’s most daring move in the past 20 years with the box office franchise, now in its fifth installment.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner hits theaters on Friday. Watch the trailer below.
