  • Marvel Looking to Launch ‘Nova’ for Movies or TV

You might think that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already crammed with characters across its many movies and TV series, but that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the overflowing pages of Marvel comics.

And with some major characters being retired as actors decide to leave the roles behind (yes, we know, the Multiverse means the various popular choices can always return in new forms), Marvel boss Kevin Feige and his team are busy introducing a pack of new powerful people.

According to Deadline, the character of Nova is set to join the MCU via a new movie or TV series. In true Marvel fashion, nothing has been announced or confirmed, nor has the site’s sources learned whether it’ll be on the big or small screen.

The only concrete detail right now appears to be that Sabir Pirzada, one of the writers on ‘Moon Knight’, has been tasked with a ‘Nova’ project.

Nova, created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist John Buscema, is a human with the real name Richard Rider. A normal young man randomly selected by Rhomann Dey to be a member of the Nova Corps as the rest of them were dying. Quickly embracing his newfound powers, he jumps into action and becomes a charismatic, powerful force for justice across the galaxy. The character has been around since the late 1960s with the more popular Rider version debuting in 1976’s ‘The Man Called Nova #1’

In his time, he’s had the usual deep storyline history, losing his powers at one point, and working odd jobs before being thrown (literally, off a building) back into the superhero life and joining the New Warriors. He’s also seen a personality shift from an earlier, quippier, Peter Parker style of backchat with baddies to a darker mood following some massive tragedies.

Oh, and his Nova uniform includes a music library, which could be an interesting quirk – though given that a certain MCU character is known for his music (see below), that might not end up on screen.

How Rider might be introduced into the MCU is unknown at this point. There’s always a chance he could be stealthily launched in some other project – he played a big part in the ‘Secret Invasion’ storyline and that series is on the way featuring Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and ‘Captain Marvel’ veteran Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Thanos.

But then there’s also ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘ and its ‘Holiday Special.’ Nova’s closest connections have been with the Nova Force and its intergalactic powers, and James Gunn is on record as a big fan of the character. Still, while he’s said in the past that he didn’t want to use Rider to keep Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord as the only human in the ‘Guardians’ movies, that could all change with the third movie promising big shifts in the line-up.

However he makes his debut – whether that is in someone else’s show/movie or with a full launch in an origin story – Nova is certainly a character that fans have been looking forward to seeing. And it’s yet another sign that Marvel is going more and more cosmic with its character choices.

  • Super Bowl 2022 Trailer Roundup

The Super Bowl took place this Sunday, and whether you were rooting for the Rams or backing the Bengals, we hope you got the outcome you were hoping for. Go sports!

But what if you were more concerned with the trailers, TV spots and ads that traditionally look to exploit the massive viewing audience that the big event attracts? We’ve got you covered.

In one handy, convenient place, we’ve rounded up all the exciting footage that wasn’t on the field. Even if, as has been the tradition of late, several of these trailers and spots made their way online long before kick-off.

    TV Trailers

    MOON KNIGHT

    v73KObXZ

While the superstar of the Marvel trailers from this year’s game was a certain magician’s multiverse madness, the MCU’s Disney+ TV arm still had something to show, as Oscar Isaac and ‘Moon Knight’ brought new footage from the show.

Isaac plays Steven Grant, an unassuming fellow working in the British museum, who discovers the reason he’s been experiencing such vivid dreams of late – he’s just one identity filling his head, which is primarily owned by that of Marc Spector, who becomes the Egyptian mythology-powered vigilante Moon Knight, whose brand of justice tends to be more violent than some of the other Marvel heroes.

It’ll be fascinating to see how Moon Knight is merged with the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, though at this point, Team Marvel has proved a dab hand at juggling a wide range of different characters.

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER

    AG2YHFQB
Amazon has spent so much money on the rights to additional stories from JRR Tolkien’s canon (and on making the TV show) that we began to wonder whether the trailer would just be a 10-second shot of a ring.

But no, this is an all-action look at the series, which has cost nearly half a billion dollars to acquire and make so far. There’s no doubting the ambition on display, as the clock turns back to a time before Frodo and co. (and even Bilbo) from Peter Jackson’s movies when Middle-earth was under threat from dark forces and different races had to come together to save their various homelands. Yes, it happens a lot in Middle-earth.

The likes of Morfydd Clark (playing the younger version of Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel), Peter Mullan and Benjamin Walker are in the cast here, and the show will be on TV screens starting September 2nd.

    NOPE

Jordan Peele, who has established himself as a master of horror (and an Oscar winner) with ‘Get Out’ and ‘Us’ is back on the terror beat with his latest. In this case, Daniel Kaluuya (who starred in ‘Get Out’), Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun lead the cast for the movie, which is still wrapped in some layers of mystery, even after this initial trailer.

We do at least know that Palmer plays a woman who works tangentially for the movie industry, wrangling horses in a business that has been passed down through her family. All seems to be going well until the power at a ranch mysteriously goes out and something horrible appears in the clouds.

What’s exactly going on? Is it aliens? Ghosts? Alien ghosts? We’ll find out when the movie arrives July 22nd.

    SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2

    nxC8yBrV

Released a couple of days before the game, the new spot for the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ sequel focuses a lot on Knuckles, the new threat for our hero, who boasts the vocal talents of Idris Elba. It’s a blend of footage we’ve seen in the first trailer and some new action, plus the likes of human co-stars Jim Carrey and James Marsden.

    AMBULANCE

A slightly disappointing spot for Michael Bay’s new film, mostly because there’s little new following the main trailer, which was a while ago. Still, get ready for glimpses of Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul Mateen II as brothers who rob a bank but then need to hijack the titular vehicle, sparking a chase across LA.

    THE LOST CITY

Who is ready for Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum to go exploring jungle climes and far-flung temples? Plenty of us, it appears. The action-comedy, which also features Daniel Radcliffe and Brad Pitt, looks like it could be a lot of fun.

    JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION

    0PwKXN5m
While a shorter version played during the game’s ad space, the first full trailer for the latest ‘Jurassic World’ entry arrived days before kick-off, bringing together two generations of ‘Jurassic’ casts and unleashing lots of the requisite dino action. Let’s just say it looks suitably massive.

    THE ADAM PROJECT / NETFLIX

    TeDy1M3H
Like Universal and others, Netflix released its Super Bowl effort in advance, putting out a long clip essentially promoting the streaming service’s 2022 output which is, it must be said, laden with star names and anticipated movies.

Knives Out 2’ is among the biggest, but the trailer also offered another look at Ryan Reynolds’ time-travelling action-adventure ‘The Adam Project’.

    AUSTIN POWERS / GM

Mike Myers brings back his scheming supervillain Dr. Evil, who realizes he must save the world from itself to control it. Cue electric cars! The likes of Seth Green, Rob Lowe and Mindy Sterling reprise their roles from the ‘Austin Powers’ movies for a spot that mostly makes us wish A) Verne Troyer was still around to be Mini-Me and B) that they’d make another movie.

    THE CABLE GUY / VERIZON

A double dose of Jim Carrey this year, here returning to a role he hasn’t played since Ben Stiller’s 1996 crackpot comedy. That might have flopped, but it’s still fun to see Carrey doing his thing as the crazed cable tech, here confused by how the world has moved on to wireless internet, in this case from Verizon. He’s still got it, that Carrey.

  • ‘Mortal Kombat’ Sequel in the Works

Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero in 2021's 'Mortal Kombat'
Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero in 2021’s ‘Mortal Kombat’

Warner Bros. and New Line clearly feel that ‘Mortal Kombat’ was punching above its weight last year, as the companies have started the early work on a sequel.

Jeremy Slater, who most recently was head writer on the Oscar Isaac-starring Marvel/Disney+ series ‘Moon Knight’ (headed to screens starting next month), will write the script for the new movie.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Greg Russo, Dave Callaham and Oren Uziel, the 2021 ‘Mortal Kombat’ starred Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim and Mehcad Brooks.

In the story, an MMA fighter seeks out Earth’s greatest champions to stand against the enemies of Outworld in a battle for the universe and the safety of our planet. Released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max last April, it didn’t garner the strongest reviews, but was a success at the box office and on the streaming platform, where it became one of the highest-viewed offerings on the relatively new service.

No details of the new movie are available – beyond Slater, we don’t know who will be involved creatively and any returning/new cast has yet to be announced. The 2021 story did end with a tease for more action, and the next movie will likely answer fans’ demands for an actual tournament this time around. There are plenty of clashes in the most recent offering, but no formal competition, as in the game.

(L to R) Mehcad Brooks as Jax Briggs and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero in 2021's 'Mortal Kombat'
(L to R) Mehcad Brooks as Jax Briggs and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero in 2021’s ‘Mortal Kombat’

We also don’t know when the new movie might be released – Deadline’s report on Slater’s hiring doesn’t specify, though you can imagine that New Line and Warner Bros. will want to have it out within the next couple of years.

‘Mortal Kombat’ already has quite the video game and cinematic history. Created by Ed Boon and John Tobias in 1982, the Midway Games title became a big hit in both arcades and on home consoles, generating plenty of sequels as fans enjoyed the beat ‘em up action of pitting various fighters with unique abilities against one another.

The games became famous for their finishing moves, or ‘Fatalities’, in which the victorious fighter kills their defeated opponent, often in gruesome fashion.

It was adapted into a movie in 1995, leading to the 1997 sequel ‘Mortal Kombat: Annihilation’, which didn’t perform as well at the box office. Various comics, novels and animated shows have followed, along with anything that companies could slap its name onto. There was even a live, touring stage show featuring martial artists and stunt teams showing off some of the game’s moves.

Alongside ‘Moon Knight’, Jeremy Slater has a few projects in the works, including a movie called ‘Thread’ he wrote and will direct for Screen Gems and James Wan. The ‘Malignant’ director also has him adapting the Stephen King story ‘The Tommyknockers,’ and Slater wrote in-development Netflix film ‘Uprising’, which has ‘Bumblebee’ director Travis Knight attached.

According to Deadline, the actor was “hospitalized on Tuesday after suffering a head injury and did not recover. He was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Grenoble following a collision on the slopes in the Savoie region.”

Ulliel was about to make his American screen debut playing the villain Midnight Man in Marvel’s new Disney+ series ‘Moon Knight,’ which stars Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke and debuted its first trailer Monday night. No word yet on how the actor’s death might affect the series, which is set to premiere on March 30th.

Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, France in 1984, Ulliel was probably best known in the United States for playing a young Hannibal Lecter in the 2007 prequel, ‘Hannibal Rising.’

Ulliel had won the Cesar Award twice, which is France’s equivalent of the Academy Awards. First for Best Actor in 2004’s ‘A Very Long Engagement,’ and the second time was for Best Actor in 2017’s ‘It’s Only the End of the World.’ Ulliel also won two Lumiere Awards for his work in 2003’s ‘Summer Things’ and 2014’s ‘Saint Laurent,’ respectively.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Trailer Premiere

'Moon Knight' premieres March 30th on Disney+
‘Moon Knight’ premieres March 30th on Disney+

Premiering Monday night during the NFL football game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams was the first full trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series ‘Moon Knight,’ which begins March 30th and stars Oscar Isaac (‘Dune’) as the classic Marvel comic book character.

Commonly referred to as the “Batman of the Marvel Universe,” in the comics Moon Knight is a former Marine and CIA operative named Marc Spector, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and powered by the Egyptian Moon God Khonshu, becomes the vigilante known as Moon Knight. The character was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin, and first appeared in “Werewolf by Night” #32 in 1975.

Created by Jeremy Slater (‘The Umbrella Academy’), the six-episode series will be directed by Mohamed Diab (‘Cairo 678’), as well as Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (‘Synchronic’), and it is set in the MCU.

Oscar Isaac plays Marc Spector and the series will explore his different personalities, including Steven Grant and Jake Lockley, while the character “is drawn into a deadly war of gods with his multiple identities.” Ethan Hawke (‘The Magnificent Seven’) has signed on to play the show’s villain.

The trailer beings with Oscar Isaac suddenly waking up and finding himself chained to a bed. We discover that this is his Steven Grant persona and that he is seeing visions of things that are not there. “I think I’m losing it,” says the character in a voice over. “I can’t tell the difference between life and dreams.”

We then see him walking through an Egyptian exhibit at a museum and finding a ringing cell phone. A female voice says, “Oh my God! You’re still alive? What’s wrong with you, Marc?” Isaac’s character then says, “Why did you call me Marc?”

We are then introduced to Ethan Hawke’s character, who seems to be a cult leader. He says to Spector, “It must be very difficult the voices in your head. There is chaos in you.” We then see a series of action sequences including Spector holding a gun, driving a truck, running, falling off a cliff, in an asylum, and in Egypt. Then an unidentified voice says, “Embrace the chaos.”

We then see Spector forming into Moon Knight with his full white, comic book accurate costume. He violently beats up a bad guy, before turning directly to the camera and walk out of view with glowing white eyes. After the title card, we get one last shot of Moon Knight, in costume, jumping from one rooftop to another with the crescent moon behind him.

Marvel Studios also released the official poster for the series, which you can see in full below. ‘Moon Knight’ premieres on Disney+ beginning March 30th.

  • Marvel Confirms Three New Disney+ Series, Including ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Moon Knight’

Marvel Confirms Three New Disney+ Series, Including ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Moon Knight’

    Marvel/Disney+

As if the slew of new Marvel shows coming to Disney+ weren’t already massive, the studio just confirmed three new series: “Ms. Marvel” (news of which leaked before the D23 panel), as well as  “She-Hulk” and “Moon Knight.”

No cast has been announced yet for these upcoming shows:

“She-Hulk” will follow Bruce Banner’s cousin, attorney Jennifer Walters, who gets a radioactive blood transfusion. She first appeared in 1980’s The Savage She-Hulk No. 1, and was the last major Marvel character co-created by Stan Lee.

“Moon Knight” is the vigilante alter ego of mercenary Marc Spector, who also has two other alter egos: millionaire Steven Grant and cab driver Jake Lockley. They may all be coming from Egyptian deity Konshu … or Konshu might also be a figment of Spector’s imagination. Got that?

“Ms. Marvel”: This version of Captain Marvel is a teenager named Kamela Khan, Marvel’s first Muslim character to lead her own comics title. She’s a Pakistani-American who has the ability to stretch and change her shape. The show is in development with British writer Bisha K. Ali to write and act as showrunner.

We’re also getting alternate reality animated series “What If…?” in 2021. “Westworld” star Jeffrey Wright will voice the all-seeing Watcher, who will be “your guide through these vast new realities.”

Kevin Feige showed scenes of alternate MCU plots, including  Zombie Captain America and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) taking up Captain America’s mantle and becoming Captain Carter.

All these series will be intertwined with Marvel’s theatrical films, meaning they expect you to watch “Falcon & Winter Soldier,” “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “What If…?”,” Hawkeye” and all the MCU movies.

    Disney+ launches November 12 in the U.S.
