    • Amazon MGM Studios made its presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘The Sheep Detectives’ and ‘Spaceballs: The New One’.
    • There was also a look at Michael B. Jordan’s ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’.

After making its first trip to CinemaCon last year, Amazon MGM Studios has certainly been enjoying a good year at the box office so far, largely thanks to the huge success of ‘Project Hail Mary’ (which, as announced at the panel, just crossed $525 million at the global box office, cementing it as the company’s biggest movie to date, and will see its theatrical window extended, Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!).

Hoping to keep the momentum rolling, the studio unveiled new looks at this year’s crop of movies and beyond including ‘The Sheep Detectives’ and ‘Masters of the Universe’. But if you were expecting a surprise announcement about casting for the new James Bond movie, there was none –– but VP of Film Courtenay Valenti did promise it’ll be worthy of the venerable franchise’s legacy.

First out of the gate (even though it isn’t out until next March) was newly minted Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan‘s remake of the 1968 caper movie –– previously re-imagined in 1999, which the actor is directing and starring in.

After a look at some fun footage, Jordan himself took the stage to talk up the fact that Jon Batiste is crafting the music for the movie. He also brought out co-star Adria Arjona, complimenting her “intensity, wit, and fire” while calling her “an incredible scene partner.” Their cat-and-mouse relationship (as art thief and the insurance investigator tracking him down) is at the core of the movie.

Kenneth Branagh, meanwhile, plays the antagonist, the person that Jordan’s Crown targets. Jordan says he made the movie for big screens.

Hoping for another big hit, Amazon MGM is putting a lot of weight behind ‘Masters of the Universe’, which adapts the 1980s toy line and cartoon series (and was already focus of a notoriously unsuccessful 1987 movie).

Stars Nicholas GalitzineCamila Mendes and director Travis Knight took the stage to introduce a new look at the film. Galitzine, of course, was hefting He-Man’s classic power sword, which is surely some sort of safety violation.

Some fresh footage from the movie –– which Knight and co. described as tackling how someone is challenged to step up beyond what they think they can do –– was screened after Galitzine had the audience lift the fake swords they received as he recited He-Man’s classic transformation line

The new scene shows Galitzine’s Prince Adam and Mendes’ Teena reuniting on Earth before they travel to Eternia to battle the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto), which in turn leads into the new trailer.

Another jump ahead in time for a quick look at footage from Jason Statham action sequel ‘The Beekeeper 2’. It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from The Stath, and should keep fans happy. Statham himself appeared via video to exclaim, “some people say less is more. I say more is more.”

The new movie will see the Beekeeper society looking to overthrow the US government. At this point in time, the jokes write themselves…

Back to 2026’s schedule, and the quirky mystery drama about a herd of sheep who must solve the murder of their beloved shepherd (Hugh Jackman).

Jackman himself arrived on stage (along with co-stars Nicholas Braun, and a returning Galitzine) to tout the film, which also boasts a considerable cast in both live-action (Emma Thompson) and voice (too many to list) form. It’s described as “a warm deeply human story about finding your place in the world.” And we got an extended look at the movie.

With confetti and chaos, the new movie from director David Leitch launched into a first look at a team of social media types who make videos about, well, how to rob banks.

Leitch came on stage with Pete Davidson, and Davidson revealed that this group of robbers livestreams their crimes and robberies. “They’re putting an end to greed and corruption one heist, and one video, at a time,” he said, before Rhenzy Feliz and Anna Sawai were confirmed to be the other two robbers. Leitch wanted to capture the energy of a manic YouTube video, before a video message from the rest of the cast played.

It might still be busy shooting, but the re-imagining of the 1980s action movie is one of the bigger titles on the horizon for the studio.

With Henry Cavill starring as the immortal warrior who must battle others of his kind, it promises plenty of set pieces.

Cavill and director Chad Stahelski (‘John Wick’) are halfway through filming, but the former took time out to appear via video and offer some early footage.

    • Zach Galifianakis, Cary Elwes, Kumail Nanjiani and more are in the cast.
    • It’ll be a prequel to Mel Brooks’ ‘Young Frankenstein’.

We learned back in July that, following the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel movie news, another Mel Brooks movie was getting the follow-up treatment. Or in this case, a TV prequel. ‘Young Frankenstein’ is the Brooks project in question and the new show is ‘Very Young Frankenstein.’

    6652

While we already knew that Taika Waititi is involved (to direct the pilot) alongside two writers from the ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ TV spin-off, Stefani Robinson and Garrett Basch, the cast has also been revealed.

Zach Galifianakis (‘The Hangover’), Dolly Wells (‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’), Spencer House (‘Space Force’), Nikki Crawford (‘How to Deter a Robber’), and Kumail Nanjiani (‘The Big Sick’) are all aboard.

Brooks’ 1974 horror-comedy starred Gene Wilder (who co-wrote the screenplay with the director) as Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of mad scientist Victor Frankenstein –– the younger Frankenstein pronounces the family name as “Fronkensteen,” to distinguish himself from his ancestor, whose unorthodox experiments have brought the American scientist shame.

When Frederick inherits his grandfather’s Transylvania castle, he wants to prove Victor was not insane. Alongside Igor (pronounced as “Eye-gore”), whose grandfather assisted Victor in the lab, the pair attempts to save the muddied Frankenstein name by creating their own monster. What could go wrong?

The movie also stars Peter Boyle as the monster, Marty Feldman as Igor, Cloris Leachman as Frau Blücher, Madeline Kahn as Frederick’s fiancée and Teri Garr as Inga. Brooks played multiple characters, including voicing Victor Frankenstein.

What’s happening with ‘Very Young Frankenstein’?

There are no details as to how the new show will spin off from the movie, but the title suggests turning the clock back to the earlier days of Frederick. Perhaps a college comedy?

None of the freshly–announced cast have character descriptions, so we’ll have to wait for further details –– but Elwes is listed as the star of this one.

When will ‘Very Young Frankenstein’ be on our screens?

The show right now is just a pilot for FX and Hulu, so it’ll need to score a pickup if it’s to go to series. Audiences (and Brooks’ accountant) are no doubt crossing their fingers.

After years as a rumor and in development, the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel just hit Ridiculous Speed. Or at least, production speed, as shooting is now kicking off on the continuation of the space satire/farce co-created by Mel Brooks in 1987.

Brooks is back in the dual role of the nefarious President Skroob and wise sage Yogurt, while the likes of Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga are returning to their parts. Most surprisingly Rick Moranis –– who has been retired from on-screen work for years –– has been tempted back to play Vader-spoofing villain Dark Helmet.

    [Shortcode: cloS09s7a0JwesCtRhfAA1]

And via an announcement from Amazon MGM Studios, which is backing the new movie, we know that Anthony Carrigan (‘Barry’) is among the newer faces joining for this go-around (more on the others below).

The original ‘Spaceballs’, directed by Brooks from a script he wrote with Thomas Meehan and Ronny Graham, starred Pullman as Lone Starr, a scruffy hero in the Han Solo mold who has to stop the nefarious President Skroob from stealing the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia.

Along the way, he comes to the aid of Vespa (Zuniga) and her sarcastic robot maid Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers). John Candy played Starr’s faithful half-man/half-dog sidekick Barf.

As for the new movie, it’s predictably wrapped in mystery, with the official logline going for a joke: “the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.”

And Brooks has previously described it thusly:

“A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Alongside the veteran cast (and now Carrigan), we can also expect to see Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and, keeping it in the family, ‘Thunderbolts*’ Lewis Pullman, son of Bill, playing Starburst, his on-screen spawn.

Who is making the new ‘Spaceballs’?

With Gad on board to star and produce, he’s also co-written the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who worked on ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’.

Josh Greenbaum, who made ‘Strays’ (for which Gad provided a voice) and ‘Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar’, is in the director’s chair. He feels like a good fit for a new ‘Spaceballs’, since he’s proved he can handle wacky comedy with some emotional undertones.

When will the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel be on screens?

While Amazon MGM Studios has yet to confirm an exact date, but it is aiming for a 2027 theatrical launch.

  • ‘Spaceballs 2’ Cast Reprising Their Roles Is The Right Choice

    • A ‘Spaceballs’ sequel is in the works with much of the original cast returning.
    • Without the original actors reprising these roles, ‘Spaceballs 2’ would likely lack what is needed for it to succeed.
    • The addition of Lewis Pullman, Josh Gad, & Keke Palmer is also a brilliant move.

A ‘Spaceballs‘ sequel is in the works after nearly forty years and while that is exciting enough information on its own, the fact that much of the cast is returning is the icing on the cake.

    cloS09s7a0JwesCtRhfAA1

Unless ‘Spaceballs 2‘ were to follow a group of completely new characters (think ‘Star Wars‘ prequels or sequels), there is no way getting around replacing these actors. The film is so iconic that simply recasting would not only be a kick in the teeth to the actors (and the fans) but it would likely never capture the same satirical vibe that it needs to on order to be a success.

‘Spaceballs’ is a beloved film, a cult classic if you will, and needs to be treated as such. To bring in all new people, without any true ties to the original, would be a disgrace. The original cast members are not just perfect choices to play these characters, but the right choices to play them, as well.

No One Could Replace Rick Moranis As Dark Helmet

(L to R) Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz in 'Spaceballs'. Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
(L to R) Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz in ‘Spaceballs’. Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Rick Moranis is that actor who would be the hardest to replace and keep fans feeling as if Dark Helmet is the same character. It would be just like ‘Star Wars’ putting out a movie featuring Darth Vader and not using James Earl Jones‘ iconic voice. It would immediately feel like an impression, an imitation, and not the same thing.

This is the most surprising return for most, considering that he hasn’t acted in quite sometime. His last live-action role was ‘Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves‘, which release in 1997. After that he did lend his voice to several animated projects, but ultimately gave up acting more or less in 2008. It is a treat to have him return and quite honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The main cast are such iconic characters that it simply makes sense to have the actors who know them inside and out come back and reprise their roles. As long as they are willing and able, there truly is no reason to recast.

Mel Brooks and Daphne Zuniga Are Also, Thankfully, Returning

(L to R) Joan Rivers as the voice of Dot Matrix and Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa in 'Spaceballs'. Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Mel Brooks directed and starred in the original 1987 film. He is currently 98 years old, so his return for ‘Spaceballs 2’ as Yogurt is a bit shocking. That said, he can simply provide the voice via a recording booth if necessary, and have a stand-in actor if need be, due to the nature of the character. While fans would love to see him don the iconic gold makeup, that is simply not necessary with today’s technology. Of course, that would be ideal, but there are work arounds if they are needed.

Daphne Zuniga returning as Princess Vespa is no surprise to many as she has continued to act since ‘Spaceballs’. Knowing that Princess Vespa and Lone Starr marry at the end of the first film is the perfect lead-in to introducing their child, who will likely be the main focus of ‘Spaceballs 2’.

Sadly one of the most memorable characters, Barf, cannot be portrayed by the original actor, John Candy, as he has passed away. It is hard for fans of ‘Spaceballs’ to imagine a sequel without this particular character, so odds are Barf will either be recast, or one of his offsprings will join in the adventure. This is likely where Josh Gad steps in, because has the comedic chops to pull it off, although we do not yet know for sure.

Lewis Pullman Joining His Father, Bill Pullman, As His Son Is A Brilliant Casting Choice

Lewis Pullman coming in as Lone Starr’s son, which is fitting becauae his father, Bill Pullman, is reprising that role as well for ‘Spaceballs 2′. Having both Pullmans on screen is sure to be a joyful fans, but it will also make their moments together believable. As with Rick Moranis’ return as Dark Helmet, finding a replacement actor for Bill Pullman’s Lone Starr would prove to be incredibly difficult.

Bringing in Lewis Pullman is a brilliant move because not only is he the perfect person to carry on the Lone Starr legacy because of his father, he is also a great actor, which he has proven time and time again, most recently in ‘Thunderbolts*‘.

Keke Palmer also joins the ‘Spaceballs 2’ cast in an undisclosed role. Another comedic genuis who is sure to fit into this crazy Sci-Fi world perfectly.

Josh Gads Love For The Original ‘Spaceballs’ Is Reassuring

Josh Gad is leading the charge on ‘Spaceballs 2’, reportedly starring and producing. He also apparently wrote the sequel. Not only does he know his way around comedy, he is also a big fan of the original film. He has admitted to seeing ‘Spaceballs’ before even seeing ‘Star Wars’. Knowing that he is such a big fan himself should put minds at ease. Surely he would not agree to star in something that doss have the same vibe and feeling of the original, which he loves so much.

While not much is known about the story yet, ‘Spaceballs 2’ will clearly be set a long time after the events of ‘Spaceballs’. The actors have aged forty years, which is something you simply cannot avoid. Plus, with Lewis Pullman playing the adult son of Lone Starr, we know time must have passed. There are so many routes they can go, but with the original cast on board, fans will have high hopes that they can recreate magic.

Amazon MGM’s ‘Spaceballs 2’ is set to release in 2027. There is no confirmation yet as to if it will head to theaters yet, or release exclusively on Prime Video.

    • Mel Brooks is set to return as Yogurt for the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel movie.
    • Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga are aboard to reprise their roles.
    • Josh Greenbaum is directing for Amazon/MGM.

The Schwarz is still strong with Mel Brooks and his ‘Spaceballs’ cast.

Following on from the news a year ago that Brooks and Josh Gad were leading the development of a sequel to Brooks’ 1987 ‘Star Wars’ (and other sci-fi movies) comedy riff.

Amazon MGM Studios has announced that, as we perhaps might have predicted, Brooks will be back in front of the camera as well as behind it, playing the mystical, Yoda-spoofing Yogurt.

    [Shortcode: cloS09s7a0JwesCtRhfAA1]

Gad is on board to co-write and produce, and will likely be showing up on screen in some capacity.

And that’s not all: there has been a flurry of other casting stories, with Deadline bringing word that Bill Pullman is returning to play Lone Starr, while in even more surprising news, Rick Moranis will be back as the villainous Dark Helmet.

The Wrap, meanwhile, has a report that Daphne Zuniga plans to join her old ‘Spaceballs’ colleagues, playing Princess Vespa.

It’s not just veterans, either: Deadline’s report mentions that ‘One of Them Days’ star Keke Palmer is also aboard the movie, playing an unknown new role called Destiny.

Keeping it in the family, meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter has the story that Bill’s son Lewis Pullman, recently seen in ‘Thunderbolts,’ will join the cast to play a character named Starburst, the son of Lone Star and Vespa.

What was the story of ‘Spaceballs’?

The original ‘Spaceballs’, directed by Brooks from a script he wrote with Thomas Meehan and Ronny Graham, starred Bill Pullman as the aforementioned Lone Starr, a scruffy hero in the Han Solo mold who has to stop the nefarious President Skroob (Brooks) from stealing the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia.

Along the way, he comes to the aid of Vespa (Zuniga) and her sarcastic robot maid Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers). John Candy plays Starr’s faithful half-man/half-dog sidekick Barf and Moranis is superb Vader spoof Dark Helmet.

Spaceballs’ doesn’t just target George Lucas’ work, however: there are also riffs on the likes of ‘Planet of the Apes’, ‘Star Trek’ and in one particularly memorable moment, ‘Alien’.

Though the movie didn’t exactly triumph at the box office (it ended up with $38.1 million worldwide) but has long since been considered a cult classic.

Plot details for the new film have yet to be revealed, but Deadline mentions that people who have not yet read the script describe it as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” Which if you ask us, sounds like the sort of line Mel Brooks would spin about the movie in order to get a laugh.

Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment is also aboard, and he’ll producing alongside Brooks, Gad, Jeb Brody and Greenbaum, with Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez as executive producers.

Moranis is perhaps the most shocking of the new announcements, since he’s barely been seen on screens for more than a decade and hasn’t come back for extensions of other franchises such as ‘Ghostbusters’.

Here’s what he told Heeb magazine back in 2013 about the stalled original plan for a ‘Spaceballs’ sequel:

“I wasn’t privy to what the budget was or anything, but the deal [Brooks] presented me, what he wanted me to do, was not workable. It was two or three years later. He wanted me to… it’s better if I don’t get into the particulars of it. Because it is so specific, it’s counterproductive to talk about it. But I was unable to make a deal, and it would have been something I would have wanted to do. But that ship has sailed.”

Looks like the ship has come back into the harbor!

When will the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel be on screens?

While Amazon MGM Studios has yet to confirm an exact date, Deadline mentions a planned 2027 theatrical launch.

Follow-ups to Mel Brooks movies have apparently become a thing. We’ve already seen 1981’s ‘History of the World: Part I’ spawn Hulu limited series ‘History of the World: Part II’ last year (which was driven by Nick Kroll and David Stassen, but with Brooks as producer and occasionally on screen).

While Brooks would probably crack that it’s all happening now before it’s too late, another of his comedies is seeing a return –– this time, a sequel to 1987 ‘Star Wars’ spoof ‘Spaceballs’.

Josh Gad is now developing the new movie for Amazon/MGM (since MGM released the original and Amazon has been looking for ways to use the IP it inherited since buying the company), with Brooks involved as a producer and –– assuming he wants to –– once again stepping before cameras.

  • Movie Review: ‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’

Michael Cera as “Hank” and Samuel L. Jackson as “Jimbo” in 'Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank' from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, Align, and Aniventure.
Michael Cera as “Hank” and Samuel L. Jackson as “Jimbo” in ‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’ from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, Align, and Aniventure.

Opening in theaters on July 15th is the new animated movie ‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank,’ which is loosely based on Mel Brooks’ classic comedy ‘Blazing Saddles.’

The movie stars Michael Cera (‘Superbad’) as Hank, a troubled dog who is trained to be a samurai by his mentor, a cat named Jimbo (Samuel L. Jackson). Now, in order to protect a village of cats, Hank and Jimbo must battle with the evil Ika Chu (Ricky Gervais).

Co-directed by Rob Minkoff (‘The Lion King’), in addition to Cera, Jackson, and Gervais, the talented voice cast also includes George Takei, Gabriel Iglesias, Djimon Hounsou, Michelle Yeoh, Aasif Mandvi, Cathy Shim, and Kylie Kuioka.

The result is an uninspired animated movie that tries to recreate the best moments from ‘Blazing Saddles’ but never makes the jokes its own and relies too heavily on the original source material without building on the actual characters and their journey.

The film begins by introducing us to a young Hank (Cera), whose life is saved by a Samurai cat named Jimbo (Jackson). Years later, when a warmongering cat named Ika Chu (Gervais) threatens to destroy the peaceful cat village where Jimbo lives, Hank arrives to help. Unsure of his own abilities, Hank trains with Jimbo in the ways of the samurai to defeat Ika Chu and save the village.

Gabriel Iglesias as “Chuck” and Aasif Mandvi as “Ichiro” in 'Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank'
(L to R) Gabriel Iglesias as “Chuck” and Aasif Mandvi as “Ichiro” in ‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’ from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, Align, and Aniventure.

Since the animated movie is loosely based on ‘Blazing Saddles,’ the plot points are about the same, following an outcast samurai who saves a small town, instead of an outcast cowboy.

Michael Cera basically plays the Cleavon Little role, with Samuel L. Jackson playing the Gene Wilder surrogate. Ricky Gervais’s Ika Chu stands-in for Harvey Korman, while Mel Brooks himself makes a voice appearance, playing a similar role to his part in the original, as the ruler of Kakamucho and Ika Chu’s boss.

But even the involvement of Mr. Brooks is not enough to make this movie work. Although, I did appreciate that the filmmakers included all of ‘Blazing Saddles’ original writers in the credits including Brooks, Andrew Bergman and Richard Pryor, giving them the credit they deserve for the original work.

For those that don’t know, ‘Blazing Saddles’ is one of the funniest movies ever made and included a now famous sequence of fart jokes. So, adapting it to an animated film for kids actually makes sense, but besides the flatulent humor, a lot of the movie’s jokes and character development lands flat and doesn’t inspire interest from the audience.

Of the cast, Ricky Gervais is clearly having the most fun and is really funny, adding a lot of his own public persona to the role. He plays the character as an ego-maniacal, insecure, know-it-all, not unlike his David Brent character from ‘The Office.’ Gervais is also a well-known cat lover in real life, which adds to the humor of his character as well.

Ricky Gervais as "Ika Chu" and George Takei as "Ohga" in 'Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank'
(L to R) Ricky Gervais as “Ika Chu” and George Takei as “Ohga” in ‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’ from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, Align, and Aniventure.

Michael Cera has mastered his persona of playing a youthful, innocent, and naïve young man, which works well with the character of Hank. Cera’s performance certainly makes Hank lovable, but unfortunately the screenplay doesn’t allow enough time for the character to grow and mature.

His relationship with Jimbo is the most interesting, but again, the two characters are not given enough to do. The training sequences steal from ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘Kung Fu Panda,’ and don’t feel fresh or new. Samuel L. Jackson was great casting for Jimbo, but I would have liked the character to have a more pivotal role.

Star Trek’ legend George Takei is always a welcomed addition to any project, and hearing his voice in this movie was a nice surprise. Takei plays Ika Chu’s henchman Ohga, and has great chemistry playing off of Gervais. While his role is somewhat limited too, the filmmakers did find time to have him say his signature line, “Oh, my.”

Director Rob Minkoff is no stranger to animation having directed one of the greatest animated films of all-time, ‘The Lion King.’ But ‘Paws of Fury’ lacks any of the gravitas or character development of his past work, and even the animation itself leaves little to be desired.

In the end, ‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’ is both a disappointment to ‘Blazing Saddles’ fans hoping for one last great movie from the mind of Mel Brooks, and also a disappointment to parents hoping to find a fun animated movie to take their kids to this summer.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your reaction when you heard they were making an animated movie loosely based on Mel Brooks’ classic ‘Blazing Saddles?’

Michael Cera: It sounded great to me, and the whole team just sounded great. I felt like it was a very lucky thing to be a part of.

MF: Did you get a chance to meet Mel Brooks?

MC: Not on this project. I have not overlapped with him at all, but I did get to meet him in his office several years ago. It must have been 10 years ago now on the Culver City lot in Los Angeles.

I just went over and paid him a visit in his office, and we got to sit with him for a half an hour and chat. That was just an amazing thing for me. He was so sweet, and it was a great half hour of my life.

MF: In your own words, how would you describe Hank and how did you find the voice for the character?

MC: He’s a dog that has a very strong sense of his destiny and his dream, and he’s fully committed to that. His heart is completely behind that, and he’s willing to go through whatever hardship is thrown his way to achieve it. I like that about him. I think that’s an admirable quality about the character.

Finding the voice, I think came from just understanding the character slowly and kind of working with the creative team on bringing him to life. It just kind of comes through osmosis, through trying things, I guess.

MF: Can you talk about Hank’s friendship with Jimbo, who is played by Samuel L. Jackson?

MC: Well, Jimbo is the reason that Hank wants to be a Samurai, even though he doesn’t realize that when he meets him because Jimbo came to Hank’s rescue when he was a little puppy.

So, there’s sort of a troubled relationship between them because Jimbo’s this inspiring figure to Hank who’s turned into such a shell of his former self. But Hank revives the old fire in him and kind of help each other in that way.

MF: Can you talk about the recording process and working with director Rob Minkoff?

MC: Working with Rob was amazing. Rob is an incredible guy, he’s got an incredible career and he even came up under (legendary animator) Chuck Jones. We were talking about Chuck Jones last time I saw him.

So, he’s just kind of from this world of legendary animators. Having a guy like that to collaborate with is exciting because they just know this space so well, and the fundamentals of it and of character and of bringing all the emotions forward. So, it was great. It was very educational and very fun.

MF: Finally, are you a dog or cat person?

MC: I really couldn’t say because I really love all cats and dogs, and I’ve had great experiences all around with them. So, I wouldn’t exclude any from my life.

  • Every Mel Brooks Film, Ranked

    Every Mel Brooks Film, Ranked

    Warner Bros.

Mel Brooks has been a fixture in the world of entertainment for longer than most people reading this article have been alive. His entertainment career started in earnest in 1949 when his friend Sid Caesar hired him to write jokes, but even as a teenager, he would perform routines at a pool near his Brooklyn home, and enjoyed his first opportunity to become a comedian at 16 when an emcee at a local club fell ill. His first project as a director wasn’t released until 1967, when he was 41, and he hasn’t slowed down since then, moving back and forth between television, film and the stage, earning not just one but all four of the most coveted prizes in Hollywood — an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. That’s right, he’s an EGOT.

To commemorate the comedian, filmmaker and storyteller’s 93rd birthday on June 28, we’ve decided to rank all of Mel Brooks’ movies as a director. Some of the superlatives are easy to pick, but there are some surprises in his filmography that have more humor and charm than many audiences may remember.

    11. “Dracula: Dead and Loving It” (1995)

    Columbia

As the last film he directed, Brooks was chasing after his own imitators, including the Zucker brothers and other blockbuster parodists, which may account for why the film just feels like an endless barrage of bad, bad jokes. Worse, it much more openly pauses to acknowledge anachronisms and other punch lines — something his earlier films only did sparingly, if at all. Exactly how Leslie Nielsen could become a parody of himself remains a mystery given how many comedies he’s been in, but relinquishing the deadpan commitment to a role that he brought to the first “The Naked Gun,” he reduced what was a timely but potentially funny concept to shameless, laugh-free mugging, in a film that felt like Brooks poorly Xeroxing his own “Young Frankenstein.”

    10. “Life Stinks” (1991)

    MGM

Mel Brooks has always sided with the proletariat — even when he sometimes made fun of them. But in playing callous industrialist Goddard Bolt in order to thoroughly lampoon upper class insensitivity, this rare excursion into comparatively straightforward moviemaking (it’s not a parody and he never breaks the fourth wall) fails to make an impact either as social commentary or just a straightforward comedy. Remarkably, it’s not his worst film, but it’s probably just his least.

    9. “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” (1993)

    20th Century Fox

Brooks’ instincts were beginning to get rusty by the time he decided to lampoon “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” (Brooks’ movie has a title even structured like that 1991 blockbuster). Although this film has a few solid laughs (and is notable for giving Dave Chappelle his first major role) it marked a downward trajectory into more zeitgeist-y humor that doesn’t hold up as well today, much less five minutes after the movie ends.

    8. “High Anxiety” (1977)

    20th Century Fox

Critics in the late 1970s already found many of Alfred Hitchcock’s films bordering on self-parody before Brooks took aim at them, which may account for why this send-up was less well received than many of his others. Nevertheless a fun proof of many of the scenes and sequences that helped make Hitchcock the “Master of Suspense,” it continues to work best as a showcase for Brooks’ gifts as a stylistic copycat and satirist.

    7. “The Twelve Chairs” (1970)

    UMC

Brooks proved to critics that he was a legitimate filmmaker with this, perhaps one of the most famous adaptations of the Russian novel of the same name. Its longevity hasn’t endured as vividly as some of Brooks’ other films, but it remains a skillful and funny (if uneven) comedy bolstered by solid performances from Dom DeLuise and Frank Langella.

    6. “The Producers” (1967)

    Embassy Pictures

Brooks’ writing and directing debut earned him a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for this wild and unforgettable comedy about a fraudulent producer (Zero Mostel) who enlists a neurotic accountant (Gene Wilder) to help him mount a play that’s destined to fail in order to cover up some sketchy finances. The breakout film went on to become an even better-known musical, but only Brooks could make a truly great film about a truly awful play and have it live on for decades as one of the most impressive “first films” in Hollywood history.

    5. “Silent Movie” (1976)

    20th Century Fox

Featuring only one audible line of dialogue (notably, from renowned mime Marcel Marceau) Brooks’ take on films from the silent era once again leaned on his intimate knowledge of filmmaking and storytelling conventions from that era. Though the film was incredibly prescient in its send-up of a studio system that touts star wattage and box office clout over characters and stories, “Silent Movie” remains one of the director’s successes that feels like lives on via word of mouth, so to speak, rather than being shouted from the rooftops as a masterpiece.

    4. “Spaceballs” (1987)

    MGM

For a generation of moviegoers who grew up with “Star Wars” as part of their childhoods, Brooks’ parody is as iconic as George Lucas’ franchise. This is thanks largely to a vivid and instantly memorable cast of characters, the film’s slapstick-y reinterpretation not only of its mythology (“The Schwartz”) but the conventions of big-budget moviemaking (apprehending the lead actors’ stunt doubles), and the filmmaker’s indefatigable parade of jokes that just hammer viewers into side-achy submission.

    3. “History of the World, Pt. I” (1981)

    20th Century Fox

Brooks kicked off the 1980s with a much-needed goof on not just a genre or the industry as a whole, but on humankind’s legacy itself, creating an anthology that pokes fun at a number of very dark times in history. Simultaneously a parody of several different genres (including sword and sandal epics and period costume dramas), Brooks got ahead of the times for a story whose lessons about humility and vigilance fell on deaf ears in a decade that was obsessed with forging ahead at all costs.

    2. “Young Frankenstein” (1974)

    20th Century Fox

I’m not sure what’s more impressive — that Brooks made another film the same year as “Blazing Saddles,” or that it’s almost as good. Brooks turns his astute, merciless eye towards classic horror for this portrait of Dr. Frankenstein’s grandson as he attempts to escape the shadow of his mad grandfather, only to succumb to the same obsessions — albeit to decidedly more hilarious effect. Gene Wilder conceived the film and Brooks co-wrote it with him, finding the seemingly endless possibilities in the story of a well-intentioned scientist who wants nothing to do with the wackos who made his last name a punch line.

    1. “Blazing Saddles” (1974)

    Warner Bros.

A start-to-finish masterpiece that breaks down more than just the Western genre, Brooks’ first parody set a template for an entire comedic sub-genre while also dismantling some deeply uncomfortable truths about the fabric of America itself. Telling the story of an Old West town and the black sheriff (Cleavon Little) that its people reluctantly install to maintain order, Brooks turns conventions upside down and inside out with this anachronistic, endlessly clever, and flat-out hilarious classic.
