  • Box Office: ‘Jumanji’ Regains Top Spot for Modest Super Bowl Weekend

LOS ANGELES, Feb 4, (Variety.com) – Sony’s resilient “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” has returned to the top of the North American box office, leading a modest Super Bowl weekend with $11 million at 3,553 sites.

The session caps a remarkable run for the Dwayne Johnson-Kevin Hart action comedy, which also won the box office on its third, fourth and fifth weekends. “Jumanji” has become the 42nd highest domestic grosser of all time with $352.6 million, less than $500,000 behind Johnson’s “Furious 7” for the 41st spot.

“Jumanji,” which declined just 32 percent, is only the 11th title to top $11 million in its seventh weekend. It’s the lowest total for a first-place film since the second weekend of “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” won the final frame of August.

Fox’s “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” which won the box office last weekend, finished second with $10.2 million from 3,793 locations. The weekend’s sole opener, Helen Mirren’s horror-thriller “Winchester,” launched in third with $9.3 million at 2,480 venues, topping modest expectations which had been in the $6 million to $8 million range.

Overall domestic business was typically modest for a Super Bowl weekend with $92 million overall, according to comScore, as studios remain reluctant to open major titles during the frenzy surrounding the pro football championship. The lowest recent Super Bowl weekend came in at $86 million in 2014, when the third weekend of “Ride Along” led with $12 million.

The 2018 box office has remained close to even with last year thanks to “Jumanji,” with $1.06 billion through Sunday, down 0.5 percent from last year at the same point.

“‘Jumanji’ gets the MVP box office award for Super Bowl weekend with a stunning late run ascension to the number one spot as ‘Maze Runner’ adds to its total and ‘Winchester’ enjoys a bit of counter programming success amidst a sea of Oscar contenders over what is a typically slow moviegoing weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore.

“Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” the third and final installment of the “Maze Runner” series, stars Dylan O’Brien as a young man trying to survive in a dystopian universe. It declined by 58 percent from its $24 million opening. The film’s release was delayed for a year due to injuries that O’Brien sustained on the set in 2016.

“Winchester” centers on a real-life house in San Jose, Calif. built by Sarah Winchester (Mirren), the heiress to the Winchester firearms fortune, over 38 years beginning in 1886. The mansion, which stands seven stories tall, contains hundreds of rooms and is meant to be an asylum for vengeful ghosts.

Fox’s seventh weekend of “The Greatest Showman” finished fourth with $7.8 million at 2,588 sites, posting the lowest decline among the top 10 films at 18 percent. The Hugh Jackman musical has turned in an impressive $137.5 million in 45 days.

Entertainment Studios’ Western drama “Hostiles,” starring Christian Bale, followed in fifth with $5.5 million at 2,934 locations, giving it $21.2 million after two weeks in wide release. Fox’s seventh weekend of “The Post” came in sixth with $5.2 million at 2,462 sites for a $67.2 million domestic total.

  • First ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ Trailer & Photos Show Dylan O’Brien in Action

Maze Runner: The Death Cure CR: FoxIt’s been a crazy year-and-a-half since Dylan O’Brien’s serious injury filming ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure,’ but he finished it, and the first photos are now out. (UPDATE: The first trailer is now out, too. See below.)

“The Death Cure,” the third film in the “Maze Runner” franchise, has Thomas (O’Brien) searching for a cure to a virus called “The Flare.” The movie was originally scheduled for release in February 2017, but that was changed several times to accommodate O’Brien’s injuries and post-production work, finally setting on January 26, 2018.

20th Century Fox recently released the first film photos showing O’Brien and costars Giancarlo Esposito (Jorge), Kaya Scodelario (Teresa Agnes), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Newt), Patricia Clarkson (Ava Paige), and Rosa Salazar (Brenda), among others. The film also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Katherine McNamara, Walton Goggins, and Barry Pepper.

And here’s the first trailer:O’Brien recently opened up about his tough journey back from the “dark place” he was in after his on-set injury. He said his initial gut instinct was to walk away from “The Death Cure,” but after “a lot of deep searching” he realized that he did want to finish it.

  • ‘Maze Runner: Death Cure’ Has New Release Date, Forcing Other Changes

We finally have an update on the status of “Maze Runner: The Death Cure.” It was originally scheduled to come out February 17, 2017, but after star Dylan O’Brien was seriously injured during filming, production was shut down. As far as we know, it’s still shut down, but Fox shuffled its schedule around and announced that “The Death Cure” will eventually get itself back up and running, and it will now be released on January 12, 2018.

O’Brien was hurt in mid-March, but “The Death Cure” director Wes Ball and company originally expected the star to be back on set to finish the film within “a few weeks.” But a later update from O’Brien’s publicist noted that the actor’s injuries were “very serious” and he needed more time to recover. That led to the late April production shutdown. Not long after that, it was reported that O’Brien was in talks for the lead role in “American Assassin,” which plans to start production this fall. According to Deadline, they would be “working around O’Brien’s recovery from injuries.”

That was a hopeful note about his progress, and this public announcement of a new “Death Cure” release date is still more hopeful news. However, moving “Death Cure” meant shuffling some other releases around, and Fox announced several new dates while updating on “Maze Runner.”

Here’s the new lineup, via Deadline:

Morgan, Directed by Luke Scott and starring Kate Mara: wide release September 2, 2016.

Keeping Up With The Joneses, Directed by Greg Mottola and starring Gal Gadot, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm, Zach Galifianakis: wide release on October 21, 2016.

Rules Don’t Apply, written and Directed by Warren Beatty and starring Lily Collins, Alden Ehrenreich, Warren Beatty: wide release on November 11, 2016.

A Cure For Wellness: moves from March 24, 2017 to February 17, 2017.

Red Sparrow: wide release November 10, 2017.

Murder On The Orient Express: moves from November 10, 2017 to Wednesday, November 22, 2017.

Predator: moves from March 2, 2018 to February 9, 2018.

    UNTITLED FOX/MARVEL: moves from January 12, 2018 to March 2, 2018.

    UNTITLED FOX/MARVEL: moves from July 13, 2018 to June 29, 2018.

Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez: wide release, on July 20, 2018.

Are those Fox/Marvel movies the “Deadpool” sequel and another “X-Men” movie? They are a long while off, at any rate, and now “Death Cure” has one of their spots. What do you think about this new schedule?

  • 13 Reasons Why Dylan O’Brien Is So Hot Right Now

Comic-Con International 2015 - Day 1 Teen Wolf,” and now he’s becoming a bonafide movie star with “The Maze Runner” trilogy.

If you’re wondering why so many teenagers (and some grown-ass adults) are fangirling over O’Brien, look no further, we’ve got all the reasons. Prepare to fall in love.

  • 5 Things You Need to Know Before You See ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’

While many moviegoers are looking forward to the November release of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2,” that’s not the only movie franchise based on a series of dystopian young adult novels returning to theaters this fall. “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” is the middle act of the Maze Runner trilogy. It continues the saga of Thomas and the other survivors of the brutal human experiment as they learn more about their plague-ravaged world and the civil war that threatens to further tear it apart.

While fans of the Maze Runner novels are already lining up for this sequel, those who only saw the first film may not know what to expect. To help you prepare for Thomas’ latest adventure, here are the five key things you need to know before entering The Scorch.

    1. Out of the Maze, into the Scariest (Sandiest) Place Ever
Don’t expect Thomas and friends to be dropped into another isolated experiment with a giant maze in the middle. This time, our heroes will be venturing into the wider world.

Mind you, that world is every bit as dangerous as the original maze. Dubbed “The Scorch,” this hellish desert is filled with deadly obstacles of both the man-made and natural variety. It also contains the ruins of the civilization that once was. If “Mad Max: Fury Road” left you craving for more post-apocalyptic desert wastelands, “The Scorch Trials” may be just what the doctor ordered.

    2. There’s a War Brewing
Thomas and friends finally encountered the faceless enemy controlling their every action in the climax of the first movie. Look for the sequel to delve much deeper into the mysterious organization that is WCKD, and reveal why they dumped a bunch of teenagers into a giant death trap.

As you can expect from a group whose name sounds like “Wicked” (and was actually spelled that way in the books), not everyone in the world of Maze Runner is thrilled with having a totalitarian regime calling the shots. This film will also introduce a resistance group rising up in opposition to the heavily armed and militaristic WCKD.

The question Thomas struggles with in this sequel is which side of the conflict he wants to be on. Not unlike a certain upcoming Marvel Studios movie, “Which side are you on?” is really the crux of the conflict.

    3. You’re Gonna Meet Some New Allies (and Enemies)
“Scorch Trials” will feature several returning characters from the first movie, including Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), Minho (Ki Hong Lee) and the mysterious researcher Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson).

Look for several major new players to enter the board, as well. The most significant of these will be Janson (Aidan Gillen), one of the researchers in charge of the facility supposed designed to protect teens like Thomas who are immune to the deadly Flare virus. Naturally, Janson is more than he seems, and his motivations might not be so benevolent. Would you expect anything less from the guy who plays Littlefinger on “Game of Thrones?”

Other new characters will include Brenda (Rosa Salazar) and Aris (Jacob Lofland) as new allies to Thomas’ group, and Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito) as the leader of a dissident group known as the Cranks.

    4. More Answers Are Coming
The first “Maze Runner” didn’t seem to want viewers to know much about the true nature of this world, or the reason why dozens of innocent teens were dumped into a giant death trap and forced to build a Lord of the Flies-style civilization. As per usual in these types of mystery-driven stories, the characters with the answers always seemed to be the most tight-lipped.

Expect the sequel to ease up in that regard. The film won’t just showcase the wider world outside of the maze, it’ll also explore the sorry state of civilization after a disease called The Flare has decimated humanity. What is the source of this disease? Can it be stopped? Are Thomas and his friends better off cooperating with WCKD’s experiments or seeking answers in the wastelands of the Scorch?

Also look for the sequel to delve deeper into Thomas’ past as he wrestles with old memories finally resurfacing. Based on the trailer, it seems we’ll get a closer glimpse into Thomas’ childhood and the tragic events that left him orphaned and alone.

    5. It’s Really Different From the Book
Book purists might want to brace themselves: The adaptation will be a bit different from its source material – more so than the first movie was.

As Maze Runner creator James Dashner explained in a recent interview, some of these changes are “rippling effects” that occur as a result of deviations in the first movie. Perhaps the biggest change is that the telepathic communication between Thomas and Teresa won’t be included in the film. Instead, other storytelling devices will be used to continue building their relationship.

Another major change is that a significant chunk of material from the third Maze Runner novel, “The Death Cure,” will be shifted into this film. So fans can expect the climax of “The Scorch Trials” to play out much differently than the book.

The good news is that the series will buck the familiar trend of most YA novels-turned-movies by not breaking the final installment into two parts. “The Death Cure” is currently slated for release in February 2017.

“Scorch Trials” hits theaters this Friday.

  • The New ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ Trailer Asks, ‘Whose Side Are You On?’

A new trailer for “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” takes viewers deeper into the mysterious, desolate world of the Scorch, a desert-like wasteland beyond the Glade that’s teeming with its own challenges. Was it worth risking everything to escape in the first place?

That’s the question on the minds of Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), and the rest of their teenage crew, as they go head-to-head with the shady WCKD organization, and its murky plans for them. Janson (Aiden Gillen) tries to persuade Thomas and co. that they’re making a mistake in venturing outside the Glade, but it seems like it’s all just a bunch of mind games designed to keep them in their place.

Or is it? As we see in the trailer, the Scorch appears to be every bit as grim as foretold, and there’s danger lurking around seemingly every corner. The Gladers team up with a band of resistance fighters to take down WCKD, but it doesn’t come without great personal cost.

“Who’s side are you on?” Janson asks Thomas at one point in the clip. The division between the two camps may not be so black and white after all.

“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” also stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Barry Pepper, Lili Taylor, and Patricia Clarkson. It’s due in theaters on September 18.
