    • Nick Frost is close to a deal to play Rubeus Hagrid in the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series.
    • He’d join John Lithgow, who is confirmed as playing Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore.
    • The show aims to adapt the books across the next several years.

Like the giant, moving chess totems in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,’ the pieces are falling into place casting-wise for the new HBO TV series adaptation the iconic fantasy novels.

While the only person truly confirmed so far is John Lithgow, who will be Albus Dumbledore, the benevolent yet mysterious headmaster of Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, there is word that both Janet McTeer and Paapa Essiedu are close to their own deals as fellow Hogwarts educators Professor Minerva McGonagall and Professor Severus Snape respectively, now Deadline is reporting that Nick Frost is the latest person in negotiations.

Assuming his own deal lands, Frost will be playing Rubeus Hagrid, the kindly half-giant groundskeeper at Hogwarts who becomes a firm friend for Harry and co.

In the movies, Hagrid was played by Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, who sadly died in 2022.

HBO, somewhat naturally, is sticking to its blanket refusal to confirm anything:

“We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

As for the main trio, the company has conducted a huge search for young actors who will play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, but we’ve yet to learn who has landed the key roles.

Frost rose to notice in UK TV series ‘Spaced,’ in which he appeared alongside Simon Pegg and Jessica Stephenson.

The show, which was directed by Edgar Wright, led to the three ‘Cornetto Trilogy’ movies, ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘The World’s End,’ co-written by Pegg and Wright and all helmed by Wright.

Frost and Pegg, friends for decades, have also collaborated on the likes of ‘Paul’ and Prime Video series ‘Truth Seekers.’

His solo movie credits included ‘Attack the Block’ ‘Snow White and the Huntsman,’ ‘Cuban Fury’ and ‘Fighting with My Family.’

On TV, he’s recently been heard as the voice of SM 33 in Disney+ series ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’.

Upcoming for Frost? Playing Gobber in the live-action version of ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ in theaters on June 13th.

Here’s the official HBO statement on the show:

“The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling. It will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters ‘Harry Potter’ fans have loved for over twenty-five years. Each season will bring ‘Harry Potter’ and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

The series will be written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, who scored the job after HBO conducted an extensive search for the right showrunner. Mark Mylod is executive producing and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The show will be shot at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden Studios facility outside London in the UK, where the movies were made.

Who else has been rumored for the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series?

John Lithgow’s ‘Conclave’ co-star Ralph Fiennes –– who was the villainous Voldemort in four of the seven ‘Potter’ movies –– suggesting someone who could take over that character (even though he’s said he’d be willing to return if asked).

Following speculation of ‘OppenheimerOscar winner Cillian Murphy taking it on, Fiennes was asked on TV show ‘Watch What Happens Live’ about the possibility. This is what he said:

“Cillian is a fantastic actor. That’s a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favor of Cillian. Yeah.”

We’d add at this point that The Hollywood Reporter’s sources have poured cold water on the idea of Murphy even being considered right now. Which is not to say he isn’t, but that no one wants to talk yet.

The biggest issue for getting more famous –– and therefore busier –– actors involved is the commitment issue; those taking part would likely be contracted for a good 10 years or so. But we can imagine HBO conjuring hefty cash offers to name stars to entice them.

What about the J.K. Rowling issue?

(L to R) Emma Watson and J. K. Rowling at the premiere of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.' Photo: Warner Bros.

‘Potter’ creator and original novelist Rowling is a big consideration here, since A) she has final say on anything adapted from the books and B) is a problematic figure given her negative views on trans people.

This was HBO’s recent statement on the issue:

“Warner Bros. has been working with J.K. Rowling and in the ‘Harry Potter’ business for over 20 years. Her contribution has been invaluable. We are proud to once again tell the story of ‘Harry Potter’ — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance. J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

Fiennes (yes, him again) weighed in on the issue when talking to The New York Times in 2022:

“J.K. Rowling has written these great books about empowerment, about young children finding themselves as human beings. It’s about how you become a better, stronger, more morally centered human being. The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling. I mean, I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women. But it’s not some obscene, über-right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman.’ And I understand where she’s coming from. Even though I’m not a woman.”

When will the ‘Harry Potter’ series be on screens?

HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently said that he expects the show to debut in late 2026 or early 2027, which makes sense given that production isn’t likely to start until later this year.

    • Warner Bros. shelved ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ may yet be saved.
    • Will Forte and John Cena are among the human stars.
    • The movie getting dumped caused an outcry from filmmakers.

Just when we thought it had fallen completely off a cliff while trying to catch a Roadrunner, it would seem that there is a chance ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ might hit a handy, ACME-manufactured trampoline and rebound into theaters.

Yes, following the decision by Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav to thrust the movie into a vault and write it off for tax reasons (especially since the company had been going through restructuring), it looked as though ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ might finally see the light of day –– or more accurately, a projector’s bulb.

As, according to Deadline, Gareth West’s distributor-financier Ketchup Entertainment is negotiating an all-rights acquisition in the $50M range for the animated/live-action hybrid project.

    jcSgHJvodgh3q2UmbeUsa3

This wouldn’t be the first time that the company had plucked a Warner Bros. project from the brink of burial –– last year it nabbed fellow Looney Tunes title (this one fully animated) ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,’ and put it in theaters in a limited run.

Let’s face it; even if this means ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ has a small theatrical run but is then allowed to land on home entertainment so that fans might actually see it, that counts for something.

Unaware what has happened to date? Allow us to explain…

What’s the story of ‘Coyote vs. Acme’?

Wile E. Coyote in 'Coyote vs. Acme.' Photo: Warner Bros. Discovery.
Wile E. Coyote in ‘Coyote vs. Acme.’ Photo: Warner Bros. Discovery.

‘Coyote vs. Acme’ follows Wile E. Coyote, who after ACME products fail him one too many times in his dogged pursuit of the Roadrunner, decides to hire a billboard lawyer to sue the ACME Corporation.

The case pits Wile E. and his lawyer against the latter’s intimidating former boss (John Cena), but a growing friendship between man and cartoon stokes their determination to win.

Dave Green directed the movie, from a script by Samy Burch, itself derived from a story crafted by Jeremy Slater and James Gunn (yes, the current chief of DC Studios at Warner Bros.) The original idea came from a 1990 New Yorker humor piece written by Ian Frazier.

Aside from Cena, the cast includes Lana Condor, P.J. Byrne, Will Forte and Eric Bauza (who voices Wile E. Coyote).

It was originally greenlit in December 2020, and was targeted for what was then called HBO Max. But then the announcement came it would get a July 2023 release. But come April 2022, it was pulled from the release calendar and replaced with a little movie called ‘Barbie’.

While that obviously worked out for Warner Bros., this latest move is proving to be a lot more controversial.

Unlike even ‘Batgirl’, which was shelved in 2022, ‘Coyote Vs. Acme’ was finished and had reportedly tested very well with recruited audiences.

And other filmmakers, who had seen the movie, have weighed in to criticize the decision. BenDavid Grabinski, a colleague of Green, tweeted the following:

    Director Dave Green’s statement

Wile E. Coyote. Photo: Warner Bros.
Wile E. Coyote. Photo: Warner Bros.

Director Green put his own statement out on social media:

“For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of all time. I was surrounded by a brilliant team, who poured their souls into this project. Along the ride, we were embraced by test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores. I am beyond proud of the final product, and beyond devastated by WB’s decision. But in the spirit of Wile E. Coyote, resilience and persistence win the day.”

Forte was also outspoken on the film’s original fate. Here’s his statement in full via his twitter post:

    He finishes with this line:

“You would be so proud of it — a movie that should be seen but won’t. Please know that all the years and years of hard work, dedication and love that you put into this movie shows in every frame.”

What did Warner Bros. Say About the New Decision?

Warner Bros. Discovery Logo. Photo: Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Discovery Logo. Photo: Warner Bros.

Here’s the statement from a Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group spokesperson:

“With the re-launch of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in June, the studio has shifted its global strategy to focus on theatrical releases. With this new direction, we have made the difficult decision not to move forward with ‘Coyote vs. Acme’. We have tremendous respect for the filmmakers, casts, and crew, and are grateful for their contributions to the film.”

So, when will ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ be in theaters?

Patience, animation fans. While the deal for Ketchup Entertainment is looking good, it has not yet been locked down, which means it could still fall apart.

Still, per Deadline, the current plan on successful signing of the contract is for the movie to finally see screens in 2026. So either way, you’ll be waiting a little longer.

At least it’s hopeful news on this movie for once!

  • Movie Review: ‘The Parenting’

‘The Parenting’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

Premiering on Max on March 13th, ‘The Parenting’ is the latest blend of horror and comedy to arrive this year –– and is one of the most successful so far.

Humorously blending the sort of possession story offered up by ‘The Exorcist’ allied with the rom-com stylings of ‘Meet the Parents,’ Craig Johnson’s movie works on both fronts, and a committed cast throw themselves into the roles.

Will ‘The Parenting’ scare up solid laughs?

Comedy and horror tend to be fairly natural bedfellows, but getting the balance right between the two can be tricky, as one can cancel out the other. ‘The Parenting’ certainly leans heavier on the comedy aspect and doesn’t feature too much that is truly terrifying, but it does a good job of weaving the genres into a cohesive whole.

Many of the jokes are uproarious and come out of character, which means this works on several levels, including some gross-out moments and authentic development for the story.

    Script and Direction

The movie’s script comes from Kent Sublette, who has long worked on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and has served on the writing teams of various award shows. But while there have been complaints in recent years about a dip in comedy levels at the venerable series, ‘The Parenting’ shows no signs of such lag.

Laughs come thick and fast with this film, rooted in believable characters, while the horror aspect is also entertaining and well crafted.

Chances are you’ll guess early on what is really happening here, but that doesn’t detract from how much fun you’ll have watching the movie itself.

As director, Craig Johnson has mostly worked in the indie sphere on movies including ‘The Skeleton Twins,’ ‘True Adolescents’ and ‘Alex Strangelove.’ He’s also been behind the camera for shows such as ‘Minx,’ Gossip Girl’ and ‘School Spirits.’

Here, he brings character-focused skills to bear on the film, encouraging the cast to stretch themselves and bring their A-game to the various roles.

While the horror side of things is, as mentioned, less of the focus, it’s still brought to the screen in interesting fashion. The scares are well-shot and the demonic side of the story has just the right level of freakish energy.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Lisa Kudrow and Dean Norris in ‘The Parenting’. Photo: Courtesy of Max.

If the script and direction are both winners, the charming, funny cast is equally a part of the movie’s ultimate success.

As central characters Rohan and Josh, actors Nik Dodani and Brandon Flynn share a warm chemistry as the couple who are nervously preparing to have their parents meet (while Rohan is also planning to propose to Josh, which adds an extra layer of anxiety). Their back-and-forth feels authentic, as do their heightened responses to each other’s family units.

And what family units! Rohan’s adoptive parents are the withdrawn Frank (Brian Cox) and the smart, somewhat picky Sharon (Edie Falco), who aren’t best amused by the situation they find themselves in. And that’s before the demonic angle kicks in.

Brian Cox in 'The Parenting'. Photo: Courtesy of Max.

Falco does buttoned-down well here, playing off of everyone else and letting the comedy flow naturally. As the layers of Sharon peel, we find out what much more about her and how much she cares for her son.

As for Cox, he’s fantastic here, his buttoned-down character the first to be possessed by the demon lurking within the renovated rental house and turning him into something quite different.

Lisa Kudrow, meanwhile, leans into the kookiness of Liddy, Josh’s mother, but this is no Phoebe clone; instead she’s a good-natured person looking to have fun who becomes more and more concerned as the film goes on.

She’s well matched by Dean Norris, who is Josh’s big-hearted dad Cliff, who just wants everyone to get along, but is also prepared when the worst happens.

Parker Posey in 'The Parenting'. Photo: Courtesy of Max.
Parker Posey in ‘The Parenting’. Photo: Courtesy of Max.

Then there’s Vivian Bang’s Sara, the boys’ OTT best pal, who takes a panicked text from Rohan as reason to show up at the rental house and inject her particular brand of party girl attitude. But even she is more than meets the eye.

Finally, there’s Parker Posey as local eccentric Brenda, who manages the rental property and might just have more to do with the possession problem than anyone might first suspect. Posey is solid in the role, bringing a particularly offbeat energy.

And the cast as a whole are absolutely game for a laugh –– how many movies have you seen where a naked Brian Cox vomits all over another character? Or seen Edie Falco surprised on the toilet by people walking in on her?

    Final Thoughts

‘The Parenting’ is a truly entertaining mix of laughs and chills that, while you might be surprised it isn’t coming out around Halloween, should work for any movie night that needs a blend of genres.

A solid script, fine style and great casting make this one stand out. It’s not a perfect film, but it’s a really fun one.

What’s the plot of ‘The Parenting’?

A young gay couple, Rohan and Josh (Nik Dodani and Brandon Flynn), host a weekend getaway with their respective parents in a country house rental. Things take a turn when the three couples discover the presence of a 400-year-old evil entity.

  • Steve Carell Starring in Jesse Armstrong’s New HBO Movie

    Preview:

    • ‘Succession’ Creator Jesse Armstrong has found the cast for his directorial debut.
    • Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef and Cory Michael Smith will star.
    • It’ll debut on Max.

Having spent the last few years –– at least up until May 2023 when the series final screened –– chronicling the lives of fictional (if not-so-loosely based on Rupert Murdoch’s dynasty) billionaires in ‘Succession,’ writer/producer Jesse Armstrong could be forgiven for wanting to make something about an entirely different subject. Sheep farmers in Bolivia, say. Or a toilet attendant in Arizona.

But no, for his next trick, the satirical writer is throwing himself back into that maelstrom, albeit through a new angle –– and this time, he’ll direct what he wrote, making his shot-calling debut with a satirical new movie whose title is a mystery for now.

Now, thanks to a tweet from streaming service HBO/Max –– which is teaming back up with Armstrong after being the home of ‘Succession’ for its four-season run, we now know that Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef and Cory Michael Smith will star.

The movie starts filming this month in Park City, Utah, which is most famously known as A) a place for wealthy types and B) the home for years of the Sundance Film Festival.

What’s the story of ‘Succession’ creator Jesse Armstrong’s new movie?

(L to R) Jeremy Strong, Alan Ruck, Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox, and Sarah Snook in HBO's 'Succession.'
(L to R) Jeremy Strong, Alan Ruck, Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox, and Sarah Snook in HBO’s ‘Succession.’

According to the barebones official synopsis, the new film –– it presumably has a title, but we’re not being told what it is yet –– follows a group of billionaire friends who get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.

We also know the characters that the cast are bringing to screens: Carell plays Randall, Schwartzman plays Hugo Van Yalk (aka “Souper”), Smith plays Venis and Youssef plays Jeff.

Here’s what Armstrong said about the new project:

“I’m intrigued to discover whether being around so many brilliant actors and directors on ‘Succession’ has in any way rubbed off on me. Let’s hope so. I’m grateful to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and the whole HBO team for backing this film so wholeheartedly and helping me pull together a dream team of cast and crew.”

Team HBO seem just as happy to have him back in the fold:

“We’re ecstatic to be back in business with the singular talent Jesse Armstrong coming off our fruitful collaboration on ’Succession.’ Jesse once again raises the bar with a bold examination of modern greed, power and male ambition. That this feature serves as his directorial debut will only elevate what is already thrilling on the page, and we couldn’t be more excited to share this timely film with the world soon.”

Carell has been switching between TV and movies for years, since getting a big break on ‘The Daily Show’ and seeing his fortunes boosted further by ‘The Office.’

He was most recently heard rather than seen in two movies last year: family fantasy ‘IF’ and franchise behemoth ‘Despicable Me 4.’

On the small screen, he starred in short-lived Netflix sitcom ‘Space Force’ and effective Hulu thriller miniseries ‘The Patient.’ Carell has worked on Tina Fey’s new Netflix show, ‘The Four Seasons’ and is collaborating with ‘Ted Lasso’ co-creator Bill Lawrence on a series for HBO.

Schwartzman was last seen in ‘Queer,’ stealing scenes from Daniel Craig, and in Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis.’ Keeping it in the family he also had a tiny role in cousin Gia Coppola’s ‘The Last Showgirl.’

    HfcbzYtDHHYqwiRph5oxQ

He’ll be once more voicing ‘The Spot’ when Sony gets around to releasing ‘Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’ and has a role in Michael Showalter’s new Christmas comedy ‘Oh. What. Fun.

Comedian/actor Youssef, the creator and star of his own show ‘Ramy’ on Hulu, was seen in 2023’s ‘Poor Things’ and lent his voice to Disney animated title ‘Wish.’ He also co-created the Netflix series ‘Mo’ and worked on upcoming Prime Video animated comedy series ‘#1 Happy Family USA.’

Smith, who made an impression playing Chevy Chase in Jason Reitman’s ‘Saturday Night,’ also appeared in ‘May December’ and has a couple of movies on the way, ‘Sentimental Value’ and ‘Famous.’

In addition to that, he’s part of the cast for Prime Video crime show ‘The Nightbeast.’

When will Jesse Armstrong’s film be on screens?

There’s the big wrinkle for this one: if you look at the script cover in the Max tweet about the cast, you’ll see the words “This Spring.”

Which, yes, means that Armstrong is aiming to have the movie ready in the next couple of months.

Presumably, he wants to get a satire of international chaos out before everyone in America is too poor to subscribe to Max at all. Either that, or spending years toiling at the relentless maw of TV means he learned how to work quickly.

  • First Look at HBO DC Series ‘Lanterns’

    • The first image of HBO series ‘Lanterns’ is online.
    • This new series adapts the ‘Green Lantern’ DC Comics, but in grounded fashion.
    • Leads Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler feature in this initial look.

The ‘Green Lantern’ comics are famously the story of a human drawn into a mighty, galaxy-spanning force who use rings with the power to conjure up all manner of creations in their fight for justice.

You might be surprised then, to learn that the latest small screen incarnation of the story has an initial promotional image featuring two men walking down a dusty road somewhere in America.

Yet if you’ve been following the production history of new HBO/DC Studios series ‘Lanterns,’ you probably won’t be shocked, since the show is designed to be a more grounded take on the story.

    TTnEJuPqjhfJlD4RHwA8l2

Here’s Chris Mundy, executive producer and showrunner on the tone for the show:

“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama –– rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building –– that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion. The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

Let’s not also forget that the cameras have only just started rolling on the show, and even if (more likely when) the characters get to use their powers in service of the mystery, those visual effects take time to bring to screen, even for a still image.

And now we know what stars Aaron Pierre (who recently led ‘Rebel Ridge’) and ‘Friday Night Lights’ actor Kyle Chandler look like when they’re not clad in green or dishing out jewelry-based justice.

What’s the story of ‘Green Lantern’ in comics form?

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps from DC Comics. Photo: DC Comics.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps from DC Comics. Photo: DC Comics.

Created in its first incarnation (a Lantern named Alan Scott) in 1940 by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger, the concept of the ‘Green Lantern’ comics is that of a super-powered, police force, battling evil doers with rings that allow them to channel energy into different forms. There are many Lanterns, who patrol the known and unknown universe.

‘Green Lantern’s history on screen has been seriously mixed. Though different takes on the character have flourished in animated movies and series, their live-action counterparts have had less luck. Ryan Reynolds played the Hal Jordan version in a 2011 movie that didn’t triumph at the box office, and there have been fleeting glimpses on the small screen.

Even Zack Snyder didn’t manage to realize his chosen Lantern –– John Stewart –– in his mammoth Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League’. Despite shooting a cameo with Wayne T. Carr as Stewart, Warners asked him to remove the character because of the studio’s own plans. In the end, Snyder swapped in Martian Manhunter.

Back in 2020, ‘Pride and Prejudice and ZombiesSeth Grahame-Smith hopped aboard to write and run what HBO Max (as the streaming service was then called) was picturing its most expensive series to date, a space-set ‘Green Lantern’ drama whose focus would be the Alan Scott and Guy Gardner iterations of the character among the first and most popular versions.

‘Lanterns’ will follow the Hal Jordan (Chandler) and John Stewart (Pierre) characters, as new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are described in the latest official synopsis as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

So, think ‘True Detective’ meets ‘Green Lantern’. But comic book fans may recognize the basic story from the popular 1970’s arc ‘Hard Traveling Heroes’, which focused on Hal Jordan and his friend Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) traveling across America . Stewart was also featured in that story, and the producers are likely swapping out Queen for Pierre’s character.

But there will be some powerful antagonism involved, as Ulrich Thomsen is playing Sinestro a former Green Lantern who turned rogue and is described as ruthless yet charming.

His manipulative nature drives his enduring obsession with his former mentee, Hal Jordan. The character was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and first appeared in the comic book “Green Lantern, Volume 2, #56” released in 1961.

The cast also includes ‘No Country for Old Men’s Kelly Macdonald, ’12 Years a Slave’ actor Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan (who appeared in (‘The Night Of’), and the aforementioned Thomsen.

Mundy, whose resume includes stints on Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ and HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country’, is running the new series, working alongside ‘Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and DC comics writer Tom King (whose ‘Supergirl’ comic is the basis for the new movie featuring the character).

And James Hawes, who has worked on series including ‘Black Mirror’ ‘Snowpiercer’ and Season 1 of ‘Slow Horses,’ will direct the first two episodes.

He’s not alone –– ‘Watchmen’ veteran Stephen Williams, ‘Under the Bridge’s Geeta Vasant Patel, and former ‘Ozark’ director Alik Sakharov are also handling episodes.

Since they oversee the whole DC Studios arm, filmmaker Gunn and producer Peter Safran are executive producers alongside Ron Schmidt.

When will ‘Lanterns’ be on screens?

We’re still waiting to learn when HBO will premiere the show, though it is reportedly targeting an early 2026 launch.

All together now, let us recite the freshly amended Lantern Corps oath… “In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might beware my power…Green Lantern’s light! On Earth. Probably in a diner.”

    • John Lithgow’s near a deal to play Albus Dumbledore in the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series.
    • He’s the first actor anywhere near confirmed.
    • The show aims to adapt the books across the next several years.

With development and even pre-production already in full swing for Warner Bros. Discovery’s plan to mine the ‘Harry Potter’ novels for an ambitious new, HBO-based small screen adaptation, the news is beginning to heat up on the casting front.

    bEEQXW7pMrziRUwmjE4yE7

There have been rumors aplenty (learn more below) with ‘I May Destroy You’ and ‘The Lazarus Project’s Paapa Essiedu reportedly in the running to play Professor Snape, as famously brought to movie screens by Alan Rickman.

And Warner Bros. has had an open casting call to find the key roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione running for a while now.

But according to Deadline, the series might have zeroed in on its first near-confirmed hire as John Lithgow, most recently seen in ‘Conclave,’ is apparently close to a deal to play Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the series.

To give him his full name, Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is also the founder and leader of the Order of the Phoenix, an organization dedicated to fighting the Dark wizard Lord Voldemort.

And while he’s a powerful wizard, he’s also a complicated one –– having had both a relationship and an antagonistic dynamic with previous dark magic troublemaker Gellert Grindelwald.

Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.' Photo: Warner Bros.
Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.’ Photo: Warner Bros.

In the movies, the character was first played by Richard Harris, with Michael Gambon stepping him after Harris’ death for the third film onwards. In the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films, a younger Dumbledore is played by Jude Law.

Lithgow would be the first American to portray Dumbledore on screen, but it’s not like he doesn’t have history with British characters –– he played Winston Churchill to Emmy-winning effect in Netflix’s ‘The Crown.’

HBO, somewhat naturally, is sticking to its blanket refusal to confirm anything:

“We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

What’s the story of the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series?

    Cillian Murphy in 'Peaky Blinders'.
Cillian Murphy in ‘Peaky Blinders’. Photo: Netflix.

Alongside Essiedu, there has been plenty of talk via Variety of Mark Rylance, an actor who has deep roots in British theatre and who has been seen in movies including ‘The BFG,’ ‘Ready Player One,’ ‘Dunkirk’ and ‘Bridge of Spies’ (for which he won an Oscar), potentially playing Dumbledore. It would seem that those discussions didn’t work out.

On the less solid side, we have Lithgow’s ‘Conclave’ co-star Ralph Fiennes –– who was the villainous Voldemort in four of the seven ‘Potter’ movies –– suggesting someone who could take over that character (even though he’s said he’d be willing to return if asked).

Following speculation of ‘Oppenheimer’ Oscar winner Cillian Murphy taking it on, Fiennes was asked on TV show ‘Watch What Happens Live’ about the possibility.

(L to R) Emma Watson and J. K. Rowling at the premiere of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.’ Photo: Warner Bros.

‘Potter’ creator and original novelist J.K. Rowling is a big consideration here, since A) she has final say on anything adapted from the books and B) is a problematic figure given her negative views on trans people.

HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently said that he expects the show to debut in late 2026 or early 2027, which makes sense given that production isn’t likely to start until some point in 2025.

‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Launching on HBO and streaming service Max with its first episode on February 16th, the third season of Mike White’s darkly hued comedy drama series ‘The White Lotus‘ is set at yet another location for the fictional, titular luxury resort chain, this time the lush climes of Thailand.

We’re greeted with a (mostly) new set of characters, all carrying some emotional baggage to complement their fancy suitcases. The question that must be asked, though, is the third time the charm?

Should you check into ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3?

“Everyone who comes to Thailand, they’re either hiding from someone or looking for someone…” So says one of the characters early in the season, and so it proves true: whether that means the someone they’re after or hiding from is a faith, a stranger or themselves.

Mike White has the formula down pat for the show now, and the real issue here is that it feels like he’s just putting minor spins on ideas that have been explored before. The characters might be different, but there is the typical clash between the spoiled guests and the staff who must cater to their whims, and while it would be boring if everyone were happy and settled, the crises don’t perhaps always add up to the same level of drama as previous outings.

    Script and Direction

Walton Goggins in 'The White Lotus' Season 3. Photo: Fabio Lovino/HBO.
Walton Goggins in ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3. Photo: Fabio Lovino/HBO.

White, who writes and directs every episode like an extended indie movie (albeit with the hefty budget of a prestige HBO show) brings his usual style and wit to the show, crafting another group of memorable characters.

Yet, as mentioned, they feel like versions of other seasons’ guests –– the younger ones are mostly looking for hedonistic party times, while the elders want to relax and escape their stressful lives.

And there is the standard assortment of people dealing with personal issues, from financial difficulties to a tragic secret from their past that has them simmering with vengeful anger that they’ve not shared with anyone around them, so everyone else thinks they’re just grumpy.

While the exploration of faith and religion as the big theme is new here, it’s not as fresh as it might be given how one young character explored the native traditions of Hawaii back in the first season, and again their wealthy, slightly conservative parents can’t quite understand the appeal or feeling like it’s a failure in upbringing.

Thankfully, the cast help to elevate the material.

    Cast and Performances

Given the show’s award-winning ways, it’s not surprising that an excellent crop of actors has agreed to show up for Season 3 (and the promise of spending some time in a tropical locale, all expenses paid, doesn’t hurt either). You may find yourself, however, wishing they had fresher scripts to work from –– and there are other issues too.

Walton Goggins plays Rick Hatchett, a wealthy sort (one of those who prefers not to discuss in detail how they earned their fortune) who is traveling with younger girlfriend Chelsea (a funny and spirited type brought to life by ‘Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood).

Rick’s the aforementioned man on a mission, though he has not disclosed that to anyone, and Goggins plays him with appropriate snark and gruffness, and he makes for an entertaining duo with Wood.

Then we have Michelle Monaghan’s Jaclyn Lemon, a TV actress traveling with two old friends, Carrie Coon’s Laurie and Leslie Bibb’s Kate. Away for a girls’ trip on Jaclyn’s dime, you won’t be shocked when old issues rear their heads between them and the lure of an attractive young man who works at the hotel drives a wedge into a friendship that was already starting to drift apart over the years.

(L to R) Parker Posey and Jason Isaacs in ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3. Photo: Fabio Lovino/HBO.

Filling the spot of wealthy-but-troubled family there’s Jason Isaacs as Timothy Ratliff, at the resort with pill-popping wife Victoria (Parker Posey) and their brood, gym bro Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), who has gone into financial business working for his dad, spiritual Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) who has her own reasons for the trip and bookish Lochlan (Sam Nivola), who Saxon is looking to draw out of his shell.

While the performances are all solid, the biggest issue for that group is Isaacs attempting a Texan accent, which seems to wander around the States and occasionally sounds Australian. While the actor has done good work in the past, here the accent gets in his way.

Around them are the staff, including solid supporting turns from Tayme Thapthimthong as ambitious security officer Gaitok, who has a thing for resort worker and dancer Mook (Lalisa Manoban), whose stories will become knotted up with the guests.

And Natasha Rothwell makes a welcome return as Belinda from Season 1, who is given a little more depth here.

    Final Thoughts

‘The White Lotus’ knows what it needs to do each season and does it with style. If it perhaps feels a little less fresh these days, there is still enough mystery to keep you hooked and ready to spend time with these people –– no matter how annoying some of them might turn out to be.

HBO gave press the first six episodes of eight, so we can’t tell you whether the show solves its lingering background mystery as well as previous seasons, but it’ll keep you guessing.

What’s the plot of ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3

The new season of the show brings a fresh group of wealthy characters (and the return of Natasha Rothwell’s spa worker Belinda Lindsey from Season 1’s Maui resort, who is hoping to pick up some tips from the staff) traveling to the lush jungles and beaches of Thailand.

Here, some of the characters are ready to explore faith and mysticism, others are looking for some much needed bonding time and at least one has a dark hidden agenda for their trip that could have a tragic fallout.

Who is in the cast of ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3

    • Leslie Bibb as Kate
    • Carrie Coon as Laurie
    • Walton Goggins as Rick Hatchett
    • Sarah Catherine Hook as Piper Ratliff

    • Susanne Bier is in talks to direct the developing ‘Practical Magic’ sequel.
    • Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman will return to star.
    • Akiva Goldsman is also returning to write the new movie.

The mystical energy is clearly flowing for the ‘Practical Magic’ sequel, the follow up to the 1998 movie which saw Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as sisters growing up in a witchy family.

With both stars confirmed as returning, and a script from original co-writer Akiva Goldsman falling into place, it also now has a director, as ‘In a Better WorldOscar winner Susanne Bier is now in negotiations to handle the movie.

According to Deadline, which broke news of the new development, a deal isn’t signed and sealed yet, but Bier certainly feels like a good fit for the story.

    4202

And it’s certainly a positive step forward for a sequel, and also represents a reunion for the director and both lead actors (more on that below).

This is what Kidman said last year to People about her return alongside Bullock:

“Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that. There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.’ We found a way in.”

What’s the story of ‘Practical Magic’?

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in 'Practical Magic'.

‘Practical Magic’ adapts Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel. The movie follows two sisters, Sally (Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Kidman), who come from a long line of witches.

Orphaned at a young age, they are raised by their eccentric aunts, who embrace their magical heritage. However, the Owens family is cursed: any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed to an untimely death.

Subsequently, Sally and Gillian struggle with their powers and the consequences of the family curse. Sally attempts to lead a normal life, distancing herself from magic, but tragedy strikes when her husband dies.

Gillian, on the other hand, lives a wild life, embracing her magical abilities. The sisters are reunited when Gillian finds herself in a dangerous relationship with Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), a violent man. In an effort to protect Gillian, the sisters accidentally kill Jimmy, leading to a series of supernatural events as they attempt to hide his death and ultimately break the family curse.

What will be the story for ‘Practical Magic 2’?

Zero official details are available for whatever storyline Goldsman is cooking up in his cauldron, but we could conceivably see the sisters confronting issues with Kidman’s character’s daughters, themselves dealing with the family legacy.

Who is making the ‘Practical Magic’ sequel?

    Griffin Dunne in 'After Hours'.

That first movie was written by Robin Swicord, Goldsman and Adam Brooks, but at this point, it seems only Goldsman is returning to craft the sequel.

Griffin Dunne was in the director’s chair for the original, but clearly has either opted not to return –– or not asked.

Bullock and Kidman will also produce the movie alongside the original’s Denise Di Novi.

What else has Susanne Bier made?

Bier is a hugely respected Danish filmmaker who is more normally found in the indie sphere, though has been diversifying into premium TV in recent years.

She got her start with 1991’s ‘Freud Leaving Home’ and has since made the likes of ‘Like It Never Was Before,’ ‘Credo,’ ‘The One and Only,’ ‘Open Hearts,’ ‘After the Wedding,’ ‘Things We Lost in the Fire,’ ‘Serena’ and ‘In a Better World,’ which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2011.

Her work has scored many other accolades and trophies, and she’s also been behind projects such as John le Carré adaptation ‘The Night Manager’ and White House drama ‘The First Lady.’ She is the first female director to win a Golden Globe, Emmy and European Film Award, collectively.

Perhaps most pertinent to ‘Practical Magic’ and its stars is her previous collaborations with both Bullock and Kidman.

Bullock starred in Bier’s Netflix thriller ‘Bird Box,’ the story of a world plunged into chaos when aliens arrive who send anyone who glimpses them mad.

As for Kidman, Bier handled HBO drama ‘The Undoing,’ which saw the actor starring alongside Hugh Grant in a murder mystery. And more recently, Bier tackled all the episodes of Netflix drama ‘The Perfect Couple,’ with Kidman playing the icy matriarch of a wealthy, dysfunctional family.

When will ‘Practical Magic 2’ be in theaters?

With the movie still in its relatively early stages, there are no release details –– we don’t for example, know whether it’ll be in theaters or go straight to streaming service Max (where the original has now landed), but given the potential star power, we don’t imagine Warners will want to shove it straight to streaming.

    • Ulrich Thomsen is the latest recruit for the DC ‘Lanterns’ series.
    • He’s aboard to be the villainous character Sinestro.
    • Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are playing the lead roles.

After years spent in frustrating development (you can read its somewhat tortured history below), the DC-spawned, HBO-based series ‘Lanterns, ’ based on the Green Lantern character is finally, actually seeing some forward movement.

    TTnEJuPqjhfJlD4RHwA8l2

We already have ‘Friday Night Lights’ veteran Kyle Chandler and ‘Rebel Ridge’s Aaron Pierre playing main characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart and now we know who will be their main antagonist: Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen has, according to Deadline, signed on to play the villainous Sinestro in a recurring role.

Thomsen joins a cast that also includes Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as modern cowboy William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, a potential love interest for John.

The casting of Sinestro is an interesting one, since the logline for the show (again, more on that below) has been at pains to portray it as a gritty, grounded take on the ‘Green Lantern’ concept, but the presence of the powerful character suggests there will still be some be some energy abilities on display.

With the series still in pre-production (it should kick off shooting next month), perhaps ‘Green Lantern’ fans will finally get to see the series –– the casting is certainly intriguing and the HBO budget means when effects are needed they’ll hopefully be impressive.

What’s the story of ‘Green Lantern’ in comics form?

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps from DC Comics. Photo: DC Comics.

Gunn has Nathan Fillion playing the Guy Gardner incarnation in his ‘Superman’ movie, which lands on July 11th.

And the show had been in development before James Gunn and Peter Safran made their big announcement.

‘Lanterns’ will follow the Hal Jordan and John Stewart characters, as new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are described in the latest official synopsis as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” So, think ‘True Detective’ meets ‘Green Lantern’…

Sinestro, meanwhile, is a former Green Lantern who turned rogue and is described as ruthless yet charming.

His manipulative nature drives his enduring obsession with his former mentee, Hal Jordan. The character was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and first appeared in the comic book “Green Lantern, Volume 2, #56” released in 1961.

Chris Mundy, whose resume includes stints on Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ and HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country’, is showrunner on the new series, working alongside ‘Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and DC comics writer Tom King (whose ‘Supergirl’ comic is the basis for the new movie featuring the character).

And James Hawes, who has worked on series including ‘Black Mirror’ ‘Snowpiercer’ and Season 1 of ‘Slow Horses,’ will direct the first two episodes.

Where else have I seen Ulrich Thomsen?

  • Paapa Essiedu Eyed to Play Snape in the ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series

There have been rumors about development on a ‘Harry Potter’ TV series since before Warner Bros. and Discovery merged, with The Hollywood Reporter’s sources alerting it to the existence of something in the works back in 2021.

Back then, there was little information about exactly what it might be. But following an article last year on the story via Bloomberg, Warner Bros. and HBO finally confirmed that, yes, a ‘Potter’ is indeed in the works.

And now we’ve hit the recruitment stage, with Warner Bros. announcing an open casting call to find the key roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione and a wealth of speculation about who might play other main characters.

The latest to emerge is that Paapa Essiedu –– recently seen cinematically in ‘The Outrun’ opposite Saoirse Ronan and known for TV series including ‘I May Destroy You,’ ‘Gangs of London’ and ‘The Lazarus Project’ –– is the top choice to play Professor Severus Snape in the show.

Snape, of course is the potions professor at Hogwarts and the head of Slytherin House. Throughout the book series, he and Harry are constantly at odds, as Harry’s father bullied Snape when they were both students at the school of witchcraft and wizardry. Snape also harbored an unrequited love for Harry’s mother, Lily. Snape was portrayed by the late Alan Rickman in the films.

The Hollywood Reporter, which broke word of Essiedu being considered to take on the role, cautions that no deal has been done yet.

And HBO was surprisingly quick to make sure we all know it’s still only a rumor:

“We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

What’s the story of the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series?

Television.

Alongside Essiedu, there has been plenty of talk via Variety of Mark Rylance, an actor who has deep roots in British theatre and who has been seen in movies including ‘The BFG,’ ‘Ready Player One,’ ‘Dunkirk’ and ‘Bridge of Spies’ (for which he won an Oscar), being close to a deal to play Professor Albus Dumbledore in the series.

Dumbledore, the kindly, mysterious and powerful head of Hogwarts was played by Richard Harris in the first two films, with Michael Gambon taking over the part following Harris’ death.

And Jude Law played the younger Albus in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films (future entries for which Warner Bros. seems to have locked in a magic cabinet following lackluster box office).

On the less solid side, we have Ralph Fiennes –– who was the villainous Voldemort in four of the seven ‘Potter’ movies –– suggesting someone who could take over that character (even though he’s said he’d be willing to return if asked).

Following speculation of ‘Oppenheimer’ Oscar winner Cillian Murphy taking it on, Fiennes was asked on TV show ‘Watch What Happens Live’ about the possibility.

‘Potter’ creator and original novelist J.K. Rowling is a big consideration here, since A) she has final say on anything adapted from the books and B) is a problematic figure given her negative views on trans people.

HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently said that he expects the show to debut in late 2026 or early 2027, which makes sense given that production isn’t likely to start until some point in 2025.
