  • Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ Spinoff Series Ordered by Netflix

the punisher, punisher, marvel, netflix, jon bernthal, spinoffAfter the successful introduction of the character in season two of “Daredevil,” Netflix is once again expanding its Marvel offerings by ordering a spinoff series featuring The Punisher.

Marvel and Netflix made the announcement official on Friday morning, following a report from Entertainment Weekly revealing the news. The “Punisher” series will star Jon Bernthal, reprising his “Daredevil” role.

Rumors of a standalone “Punisher” series swirled earlier this year, though at the time, Marvel and Netflix declined comment on the issue. But it seems that fans really responded to the character, a military veteran out for vengeance.

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, in a statement. “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”

“The Punisher” will be the sixth Marvel series in the ongoing collaboration between the studio and Netflix, following “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” the upcoming “Luke Cage,” and the in-development “Iron Fist” and team-up series “The Defenders.” According to EW, it’s unknown at this point if The Punisher will also pop up in that latter show, but it’s a strong possibility.

  • Here’s Your First Look at ‘Marvel’s Jessica Jones’

netflix, marvel, jessica jones, marvel's jessica jones, krysten ritterNetflix just released a bunch of new images from its upcoming Marvel series “Jessica Jones,” giving fans their first look at the titular character and other key members of the series’s supporting cast.

Krysten Ritter stars as the titular character, a former superhero who’s renounced her powers after a tragic event. Now, she’s working as a detective in New York City, though she’s still attracting the attention of others with otherworldly abilities. Does that mean that Jessica herself will be pulled back into hero superhero orbit?

The short answer is probably yes, considering “Jones” is one of four planned Marvel series that Netflix is using to launch a team-up, “The Defenders.” Luke Cage (Mike Colter) is dropping in on “Jones” before heading off to his own standalone series.

In the images that Netflix released, we see Jessica, Cage, David Tennant‘s villainous Kilgrave, Jessica’s BFF Trish “Patsy” Walker (Rachael Taylor), and powerful potential ally Harper (Carrie-Anne Moss). While none of the photos really give anything away, they do set a somewhat serious, grim tone for the series — there’s nary a smile among the bunch.

Check them out and look for clues to the secrets of “Jones” below. “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” debuts on Netflix on November 20.

  • Rosario Dawson, Theo Rossi Join Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’

After the success of “Daredevil,” Marvel is gearing up for the release of its other Netflix series, including “Luke Cage,” which just announced some big casting news.

“Sons of Anarchy” alum Theo Rossi has joined the series as Shades (a.k.a. Alvarez), an antagonist of the titular hero and well-known criminal who’s described as “relentless and menacing, smooth and manipulative, street smart and controlling,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to Rossi, Rosario Dawson, who played Claire Temple on “Daredevil,” will reprise that role for “Cage.” THR notes that Claire serves as a love interest for Cage in the comics, though she’s already filling that role for the titular character on “Daredevil,” so it remains to be seen if that will also be the plan with this new series.

Rossi and Dawson join actor Mike Colter, who plays Cage, described as “a wrongly accused man who obtains superstrength after a sabotaged experiment and escapes prison to become a superhero for hire.”

No release date for the series has been set. Stay tuned.

    Daredevil, Netflix
It’s not the official teaser — that’s dropping tomorrow, February 4 — but Marvel and Netflix couldn’t help but offer a short glimpse at the trailer for “Daredevil,” the streaming service’s first foray into a four-series partnership with the comic powerhouse.

The clip is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it look at our hero, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind man who moonlights as the titular superhero. We see Daredevil, in a makeshift costume, slink down a darkened hallway before busting down a door and barging through.

“I’m just trying to make my city a better place,” he says in voiceover.

We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out additional details about the series, but this sneak peek should get fans excited to see more.

“Daredevil” premieres on Netflix on April 10.
