  • TV Review: ‘The Studio’

‘The Studio’ receives 6 out of 10 stars.

Arriving on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes on March 26th (a further eight arrive weekly), ‘The Studio’ represents Hollywood poking fun at itself and looking for ways to show how ridiculous the business of moviemaking can be.

It’s also the latest comedy from prolific duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who emerged from the Judd Apatow school of laughs to essentially build their own creative empire.

Hooray for Hollywood! It’s a viper’s nest of giant egos, entitled talent, sweaty executives, million-dollar (and sometimes billion-dollar decisions), drugs, parties, glad-handing, disagreements about edits and a hundred tough decisions a day.

There’s a movie in danger of going over budget! A star who just wants their way! A corporation really hoping that its latest film is a hit with the sort of audiences who don’t really care what it’s about, just that they recognize the names!

If the scenario sounds familiar, it’s because it’s been seen in a swathe of movies and TV shows, most notably in the likes of 1992 Robert Altman effort ‘The Player’ and more recently with HBO’s ‘The Franchise,’ which tweaked the nose of the superhero film industrial complex (though couldn’t land all its punches and has been summarily cancelled after one season).

‘The Studio’ is essentially a blend of the two –– an old-school Hollywood farce but crossbred with current concerns such as exploiting IP.

    Script and Direction

(L to R) Bryan Cranston and Seth Rogen in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

Created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg alongside Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck and Frida Perez (Gregory and Huyck took the lead as showrunners since Rogen was starring and co-directing every episode with Goldberg), this initially comes across as Hollywood Satire 101. So many of the beats feel familiar, even down to Rogen’s Matt Remick, the movie-obsessed executive who thinks his knowledge of Hollywood history will help him succeed in his dream job, only to be hamstrung by corporate concerns and uncooperative above-the-line folk.

Trouble is, that carries over a lot into the rest of the series; while a couple of the characters are interesting and original, most are archetypes we’ve watched so many times before: the harried junior executive, the wacky PR person, the aggrieved former studio head.

And as one episode in particular later on (one of the better examples of the show having a viewpoint), it can be hard to care too much about people struggling to make movies at this sort of level; worried for their jobs they might be, but they’re still earning big bucks.

(L to R) Seth Rogen and Ron Howard in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

Even as Rogen and co. try to make their issues relatable, they can’t quite get there. The show does at least have a few solid laughs, and as the season goes on, the focus shifts slightly to other aspects of the job (as mentioned, a later episode has Rogen’s Matt trying to defend his position that his job is as stressful as, say, a doctor’s), and the characters start to bed down and work more smoothly.

Still, the final couple –– about which we won’t directly talk –– do fall back into old, predictable and somewhat tiresome patterns.

Rogen and Goldberg are experienced directors at this point, with several movies under their collective belt. With a hefty Apple TV+ budget to spend, they’re clearly happy to experiment to a limited degree, pulling off continuous tracking shots here and there and giving the show some visual panache.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, Chase Sui Wonders and Seth Rogen in 'The Studio,' premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, Chase Sui Wonders and Seth Rogen in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

As the heart of the series, Rogan is a variation on his relatively easygoing screen persona, albeit thrown into a tough new situation. He does sweaty, sweary desperation well, but is still overshadowed by some of his co-stars.

Ike Barinholtz is good value as Sal Saperstein. Matt’s friend and fellow executive jockeying for position. In true Barinholtz style, he’s more of a “bro,” all about the party lifestyle and social climbing, but with a quivering vein of vulnerability.

As ambitious young corporate ladder-climber Quinn Hackett, Chase Sui Wonders can be more of a sympathetic character, since she doesn’t hold so many of the cards. While her storyline is sometimes predictable, she’s fun in the role.

Kathryn Hahn naturally steals scenes as Maya, the hyperactive, foul-mouthed marketing guru at the studio. It’s the sort of supporting comedic role that Hahn shines in, and she makes the most of the character.

(L to R) Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara in 'The Studio,' premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

Catherine O’Hara falls into a similar category of reliable performer, and here she’s Patty Leigh, the one-time studio head forced out and now ploughing her own course as a powerhouse producer. O’Hara brings just the right level of bitterness and comic creation to the role.

Playing Griffin Mill, the boss of the studio even above Matt, Bryan Cranston is sadly saddled with the sort of blowhard corporate type we’ve seen so many of in the past. And naming the character after Tim Robbins’ role in ‘The Player’ just calls more attention to how this variation doesn’t quite work.

On the cameo front, at least the ones we can talk about, Nicholas Stoller offers solid entertainment value playing a slightly more eager-to-please version of himself, while Martin Scorsese is largely there because he’s a Hollywood titan and is good at being gruff when needed.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen in 'The Studio,' premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

Assuming you’re not familiar with everything from ‘For Your Consideration’ to ‘State and Main,’ ‘Bowfinger’ or ‘Tropic Thunder,’ then ‘The Studio’ will likely read as a fresh take on the entertainment industry to you.

While it can’t compete with the best of those, when it switches focus slightly, it does offer more value. And if its comedic levels aren’t always the highest, it does have some solid gags and situations.

    Preview:

    • Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are aboard a new crime film.
    • The Hawaii-set thriller will also star Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
    • Nick Bilton is aboard to write the script.

Martin Scorsese making a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio? Hardly the biggest news: that cinematic pair have collaborated on six movies together, including ‘Shutter Island,’ ‘The Aviator,’ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘Gangs of New York.’

But Martin Scorsese making a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio in Hawaii that will also star Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt? To paraphrase a former DiCaprio character, you had our curiosity… but now you have our attention!

According to Deadline, however, that is exactly what’s happening. Johnson and Blunt, who appeared together in ‘Jungle Cruise’ and have another co-starring project on the way (more on that below), have clearly formed a creative partnership of their own.

    3QrCc9TOkzFLmvpCKGfhn5

They approached Scorsese with the idea for a crime drama set on the island of Hawaii, and that has led to a compelling package including the director, his regular acting muse and Johnson and Blunt all working together.

And now, with Nick Bilton –– who is a special correspondent for Vanity Fair, has written books and served on the writing staff of shows including ‘The Idol’ and ‘Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal’ –– writing the script, this is set to spark a huge bidding contest across Hollywood as a raft of studios and streaming companies will be vying for the rights to this project.

Despite everyone involved being busy with movies and other development, you know this is one that will go to the front of everyone’s schedules assuming it comes together.

What’s the story of the new movie?

While we don’t have a title yet, here’s the basic synopsis for the film…

It focuses on a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring mob boss battled rival crime factions to wrest control of the underworld of the Hawaiian islands. It was a bloody battle, the kind of terrain Scorsese covered in both ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘The Departed.’

In 1960s and 70s Hawaii, this formidable and charismatic mob boss rises to build the islands’ most powerful criminal empire, waging a brutal war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while fighting to preserve his ancestral land.

It’s based on the untold true story of a man who fought to preserve his homeland through a ruthless quest for absolute power — igniting the last great American mob saga, where the war for cultural survival takes place in the unlikeliest of places: paradise.

There’s no word yet on who would play what, but we can imagine Johnson as the crime boss and DiCaprio as his rival.

What else is Dwayne Johnson working on?

Johnson, of course, has roots in Hawaii and has long wanted to make a movie set there (after years of convincing producers to shoot the likes of the ‘Jumanji’ movies and even part of ‘Red One’ there.)

He has kicked around a movie about King Kamehameha, who in a much different way used his strength and persuasiveness to unite the islands to improve the dealing with the explorers that were finding their way to the island shores.

Next up for Johnson in terms of release is ‘The Smashing Machine,’ the true tale of an MMA fighter, which director Benny Safdie is finishing up for release via A24 this year.

The actor is currently at work on Disney’s live-action version of ‘Moana,’ which will see him playing Maui, the role he voiced in the 2016 animated movie and its sequel, which landed last year. The updated ‘Moana’ will be in theaters next year.

And, of course, he’s got a load of other projects in development, mostly as producer. This aim to work with Scorsese and DiCaprio represents just the latest step for Johnson, who is clearly looking to be taken more seriously as an actor and prove his range outside of blockbuster comedies and action franchises.

Where will we see Emily Blunt?

Blunt co-stars in ‘The Smashing Machine’ alongside Johnson, playing his character’s wife.

She’s also aboard Steven Spielberg’s mysterious new movie, which is rumored to be a new event film, and recently changed its release date from May to June next year to avoid competition from Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Star Wars’ outing ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ which are likely to dominate May.

Beyond that, Blunt is attached to a Kate Warne biopic, an action movie called ‘Ball and Chain’ (which may co-star Johnson but appears to be in limbo for now), sequels to ‘Jungle Cruise,’ ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and ‘Live Die Repeat Repeat,’ the current title for the follow-up to ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ which saw her sharing the screen with Tom Cruise.

What does Martin Scorsese have on his schedule?

‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ director Martin Scorsese.

Scorsese, who last brought us ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ has a whole bundle of potential movies on his To Do list, including one about Jesus and another about Frank Sinatra.

He’s also still developing an adaptation of Erik Larson’s book ‘The Devil in the White City’ alongside DiCaprio, which recently took a positive step forward.

Outside of his own projects, the legendary director will be seen in crime mystery ‘Hand of Dante’ and appears as himself in the upcoming Seth Rogen starring/produced Apple TV+ series ‘The Studio.’

As for DiCaprio, he’s most recently worked on Paul Thomas Anderson’s next movie (which doesn’t currently have an official title right now but at one point was known as ‘One Battle After Another’ and is reportedly causing studio Warner Bros. some concerns during test screenings given its hefty budget).

He’s also involved in ‘Howl,’ an adventure movie with an eco-friendly theme that boasts Jane Goodall as one of its co-producers, and there of course the variety of other films and ideas jostling for attention in his capacity as a producer.

When will the new movie be in theaters?

With no studio or streaming service in place yet, there is no release date to report. That said, as mentioned above, a project this compelling surely won’t last long on the market and is sure to be snapped up quickly.

  • ‘Ex-Husbands’ Exclusive Interview: Griffin Dunne

    AmBkRUr4

Opening in New York theaters on February 20th before expanding to additional markets is the new dramatic comedy ‘Ex-Husbands’, which was written and directed by Noah Pritzker.

The film stars Griffin Dunne (‘After Hours’ and ‘Dallas Buyers Club‘), Rosanna Arquette (‘Pulp Fiction’), Richard Benjamin (‘Westworld’), Miles Heizer (‘Love, Simon’), and James Norton (‘Bob Marley: One Love’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actor and director Griffin Dunne about his work on ‘Ex-Husbands’, his first reaction to the screenplay, why his character crashes his son’s bachelor party, working with legendary actor and director Richard Benjamin, how Benjamin almost cast him in ‘My Favorite Year’, reuniting on screen with his friend Rosanna Arquette, the legacy of their classic movie ‘After Hours’, hosting ‘Saturday Night Live‘ in the 80s, and the status of ‘Practical Magic 2’ and why he’s not returning to direct the sequel.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to Noah Pritzker’s screenplay and your initial approach to playing this character?

Griffin Dunne: Well, my first reaction was, “I can’t believe there’s a script out there for a guy my age to carry a whole movie.” That it speaks to the things I like doing, my talents of being funny, sad, tragic, and comic. The circumstance was funny, but also, it’s got a kind of great setup of a divorced father who crashes his son’s bachelor party, but then it becomes so much more complex and touching. I thought, “Well, this is really rare for a movie being made about this circumstance and how fortunate to get a part like this.”

MF: As a director yourself, what are you looking for from another director when you are acting on set and what was it like collaborating with Noah on this film?

GD: I guess just support, someone who’s secure in what they’re doing and not insecure. The first sign of that is a director who’s telling you what to do or what they think before you even started working on the set and that gets in your head. But just (someone who) lets you kind of play and believes in you and doesn’t have buyer’s remorse when you’re showing up to work. They just want to see what you’re going to do and hopefully like it and add to it and make it better and just have an open dialogue. But mainly I just like a director who is secure and wants to be where they are and feels good about the choices they’ve made, always, from day one. We knew each other. Noah came to me with this script at least a year or so before we went because we were going to go ahead and then COVID put us back. During all that time, we really got to know each other during all that downtime. So, there were no sort of surprises, and I didn’t find out that he had a vicious, awful temper that I never knew. I knew him, he was funny, and he remains a great friend of mine.

MF: Can you talk about Peter’s relationship with his sons and why he decides to crash their bachelor party?

GD: Yeah, that was the endless question that we talked about on set all the time. I think he does know (that he was not invited), and he was told, but he’s at an age, and I remember I had seen it in my own father, where you convince yourself, you didn’t know. You hear what you want to hear. I have a daughter who’s an adult, and we’ll argue about something, and she will say, “What? I told you this. I mean, how can you not remember this? I told you.” I’ll say, “No, I don’t think you did. I’m telling you, you didn’t.” Then about two weeks later, I’ll remember we were in a restaurant, and we had an entire discussion about it, whatever the thing was, it was important to me, and I just blocked it. We’re messed up, complex people.

MF: What was it like working with Miles Heizer and James Norton to create those father and son relationships?

GD: It was so easy. We just sort of fell into it. I was not aware of Miles’s work. I knew he was in the Netflix series (’13 Reasons Why’). I knew he was a big deal because we’d be in Mexico City, and girls would just squeal like I was with Justin Timberlake or something. But the one I really did know that I was a big fan of, that was James Norton, who I had never met until we worked together. But his work had blown me away in so many things, in English series and movies. He has a huge breadth of work. Of course, no one knew who James, or I were in Mexico City. I go, “Wait, yes. Miles is great, but do you know who this guy is?” They had no idea. Anyway, we had an easy chemistry on camera and hung out a lot off camera. We even vacationed when we had a break from shooting, so we could move locations in Mexico. We all took a trip and went to an island off somewhere in the Pacific and vacationed together. It was like family. We each gave each other COVID too which really brings people together. Now we’re really family.

MF: Can you talk about Peter’s relationship with his own father and your experience working with legendary actor and director Richard Benjamin on that dynamic? Did your own life experience with your father help inform those scenes for you?

GD: Well, first there were so many parallels to my life and who I played having lost my father and mother, who I was very close with, and having been married and divorced and a father of an adult child, so I had a lot of personal things to draw from. I also have been a lover of movies from the earliest of age and grew up on Richard Benjamin. He was one of those actors, he and Dustin Hoffman, when I saw as a kid, were I go, “Hey, they’re kind of weird looking, and they’re really funny. I think I can do that. I think I can be one of those guys.” It was one of my earliest, “I want to be an actor feeling” was seeing Richard Benjamin. I think he was in ‘Goodbye, Columbus’ and both movies, ‘The Graduate’ and ‘Goodbye, Columbus’, I was too young to even be allowed in the theater but got in anyway. So, working with Richard was really like an honor. He was so patient with me because I just had so many things to talk to him about, so many questions and wanting to go over different things from his different movies, not only as an actor but as a director as well. I reminded him of maybe a delusion I’ve had for many years that it came down to me and Mark Linn-Baker to be the kid in ‘My Favorite Year’. I don’t know where I got that idea. I did audition for Richard, and I wanted that part so badly. I think every actor remembers the one they didn’t get. This is the one that’s haunted me for decades. So, when I meet Richard, one of the earliest things I said was, “You almost cast me in ‘My Favorite Year’.” He had absolutely no recollection of me. But it just shows you the things that we carry around that we believe at the time are part of my DNA. I know Mark was lovely but you always remember the one that got away.

MF: Your ‘After Hours’ co-star Rosanna Arquette plays your ex-wife in the film. What was it like reuniting with her after all these years, and did your past experiences working together help you both slip into these characters and their relationship rather effortlessly?

GD: Yeah, it was an interesting experience in mortality and a life experience because Rosanna and I first worked together, we met in Poland in 1980, which led to me casting her, with director John Sayles, in ‘Baby It’s You’, which she starred in and so many things since then. So, we’ve always stayed friends, but imagine how much aging takes place from 1980 to us working together as a couple with grown children. So, it really was like we spent a lifetime together as soon as we were working. Our backstory was already written.

MF: Speaking of ‘After Hours’, the film has had an incredible renaissance in recent years inspiring an album by The Weeknd and an episode of ‘Ted Lasso’. What are your memories of making that movie with Martin Scorsese and are you surprised by the legacy of the film?

GD: Yes, I guess I am. What surprises me, when it came out, I think it invented a genre of humor, which is anxiety humor. I don’t think there were movies, and people have done them since, ‘After Hours’ has become almost an adjective for a kind of genre. But at the time, in the States it was not hugely received. I remember (film critic) Pauline Kael kind of dismissed it, called me a second-rate Dudley Moore, by the way, but it was not a big box office extravaganza. It was also very much outside of the box of what people expected a Martin Scorsese film to do. So, there was a cultural adjustment and you had to let things settle. I didn’t know at what point it happened, but it was after VHSs and once HBO was pretty much well established, it started to really pick up steam. By the time it really did, the film was filled with anachronisms like there are no cell phones, and its subway fares, and Soho being a wasteland of an empty neighborhood, which by the time the popularity picked up, it was basically a mall shopping district. So, the world had changed so much, but the kind of sensibility of life going sideways, that sort of (Franz) Kafka meets ‘Alice in Wonderland’ sensibility never changed. I think people really embraced it and saw how exciting and how unique it was that Scorsese made a movie at this point about that, and that he was funny. Who thought he was funny? He made a movie called ‘The King of Comedy’, which didn’t do very well, which now is also embraced as brilliant, as it is. So, I find that that happens quite a lot to tell you the truth. That’s why we have the Criterion Channel. They remind us how great the movie was that we didn’t quite get at the time. But look, it was right there, and it’s still here, and you can go back and look at it anytime you want.

MF: ‘Saturday Night Live’ recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and you hosted the show back in the 80s. What are your memories of that experience?

GD: Yeah, it was a season, the first season that Lorne (Michaels) came back after being away. I was a huge fan of the show, of course, like anyone from the very beginning, and I remember how nervous I was. I remember how terrible the dress rehearsal went, and I remember my friend, Mitch, who was with me, came to my dressing room with a look of like, “Are you really going to go out there again?” I thought, “Well, this is never going to work. I’ve never seen such a catastrophe.” Once 11:30 pm hit, and the moment I went out on stage, it just worked. Everything just flowed. Everything was where it was supposed to be. It was like a miracle, and that miracle happened every Saturday night at 11:30pm before and since. The dress rehearsal was hardly the first disastrous dress rehearsal. They were completely used to it, just the hosts weren’t. So, it was exhilarating, and it was the rushing and getting into different costumes and wigs and everything during a commercial break and being shoved back up on stage. It was a rush. The whole thing was a rush.

MF: You appeared in the infamous sketch where cast member Damon Wayans went off script and was immediately fired by Lorne Michaels. What are your memories of that?

GD: Yeah, he didn’t so much go off script, but I think it was, I was a Tony Montana kind of drug dealer, and it was an interrogation room with cops. So, he was doing a tough cop in the dress, and I think he just suddenly lisped during the show, which I don’t know where that came from, but I really didn’t, it didn’t register. I’m not on live TV going, “Well wait a minute, what’s he doing?” I’m just like, “I got my own problems.” So, I wasn’t aware of any of that, but I’ve read about it since, and apparently, he was dismissed as soon as he walked off the set, but I was the last one to know. I ended up reading about the incident years later.

MF: Finally, there has been a lot of talk in the trades recently about a possible sequel to ‘Practical Magic’, which you directed. Reports have said that ‘Bird Box’ filmmaker Susanne Bier will direct the sequel. Is that true? Are you still involved with that project as a producer, and why have you decided not to return as director?

GD: Well, I think rightly so. I think we should see what a woman would bring to that magic. It was an extraordinary experience to be asked to direct a movie that was so driven with female characters as a man. At the time it was something I could anchor onto much more than the magic and spell books and everything, but it was family. Having had a very formidable grandmother and a mother and then sister, I grew up around strong, interesting women, and I understood the generational, but I think so much has happened in the world. It’s funny, I had a reputation at that time of being a woman’s director, like George Cukor or something. I think that there’s no such thing as a man being a woman’s director anymore, there’s a woman director. So anyway, there’s no director hired or anything yet, but I’m sure that they’re mainly focused on hiring a woman. I’m included as executive producer, but not involved in a day-to-day or any of that.

    • They’ve been ready to produce this for years now.
    • 20th Century Studios is on board to develop it.

An adaptation of Erik Larson’s 2003 literary non-fiction tome, ‘The Devil in the White City‘, has been touted so many times in the years since it was first optioned, fans have begun to feel like ‘Peanuts’ Charlie Brown with the football –– every time things seem to start going in the right direction (i.e. towards screens), it is cruelly snatched away.

Well, buckle up folks… because we’re back in hopeful mode as longtime proponents Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio (you know, people who between then should really be able to get any movie made at this point) are, via Deadline, now in talks to board the latest development, which has been set up at Disney’s 20th Century Studios.

Can it finally, actually be produced in some fashion? We can only hope. But we’ve been down this road before…

What’s the history of ‘The Devil in the White City’ adaptation?

Make your favorite beverage and settle in, because this one has quite the history.

Larson’s book, whose full title is ‘The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America,’ was first published in 2003.

The scrupulously researched and endlessly compelling tome covers a true story but does it in thrilling novelistic style.

It’s divided into four parts, the first three happening in Chicago between 1890 and 1893, while part four of the book takes place in Philadelphia circa 1895.

The book interweaves the true tales of Daniel Burnham, the architect behind the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and H. H. Holmes, a serial killer who lured his victims to their deaths in his elaborately constructed “Murder Castle.”

Burnham ran into many challenges when it came to the World’s Fair including a fire, difficulty engineering the buildings to be safe, and a lack of funds for the fair.

H.H. Holmes was responsible for multiple murders. His “dungeon” was equipped with secret rooms, torture chambers, and he even had access to a big furnace to cremate the bodies of his victims. Holmes was known as a charming man who had the ability to seduce his primarily female victims. Holmes was tried and executed in 1896 for a single killing, of his accomplice Benjamin Pitezel.

Before it was even on shelves, Tom Cruise became aware of it, nabbing the rights quickly and kicking off work on an adaptation with the help of Kathryn Bigelow and her ‘K-19: The Widowmaker’ writer Christopher Kyle.

Not to be outdone, DiCaprio dug up all the public domain information he could about the case and started to put the pieces together for his own movie, looking to beat Cruise to theaters.

Yet years went by with little forward movement for either project, and the rights eventually ended up back on the open market in 2010. Seeing his chance, DiCaprio snapped them up, intending to star in (as Holmes) and produce the project with his Appian Way business partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran.

This was their statement at the time:

“ ‘The Devil in the White City’ is truly a one-of-its-kind American story about our nation’s first serial killer. We’re excited to bring it to the big screen.”

With the rights in hand, DiCaprio and his team set about working up their new version. And, in a move that should surprise exactly no one, the actor planned to reunite with regular collaborator Martin Scorsese. Warner Bros. was quick to grab the package given that combo, and then had ‘The Imitation Game’s Graham Moore write at least one draft of the script.

Yet it didn’t quite gel, and then Paramount won the rights in a 2015 bidding war, sealing a new deal with DiCaprio and co, while Billy Ray wrote the latest version of the script.

When that fell into limbo, Scorsese and DiCaprio switched gears, targeting streaming TV in a 2022 version set up at Hulu with ‘Little Children’s Todd Field directing and ‘Castle Rock’ veteran Sam Shaw aboard to serve as writer, showrunner and exec producer.

If that wasn’t enough, the Hulu series landed Keanu Reeves to star, though it was never confirmed who he’d play (our thoughts would surely tend towards Daniel Burnham).

But a year later, the brakes were back on as Reeves and Field left the project.

Deadline cautions that the new incarnation, once more planned as a movie, is still at a nascent stage. Scorsese would direct and DiCaprio’s looking to star as well as produce, but there is no script in existence yet.

    So, now we wait. Again…

What else are Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio working on?

DiCaprio will next be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s as yet untitled new film, due out in August.

    • Mel Gibson is aiming to shoot the ‘Passion of the Christ’ sequel in 2026.
    • Randall Wallace wrote the script.
    • Jim Caviezel appears likely to return as Jesus.

The Passion of the Christ,’ Mel Gibson’s 2004 take on Jesus’ final days on earth up to his crucifixion, became the largest-grossing independent film of all time with a worldwide box office of nearly $612 million.

Though the film was considered anti-Semitic due to its implication that Jewish leaders were to blame for Jesus’ death, that controversy did little to halt its popularity, with Church leaders buying out theaters to screen the movie to congregants.

Gibson has long talked about wanting to make a sequel to that movie, possibly a two-part epic, but despite spending years developing it has seemed no closer to actually rolling cameras.

    SMLVjQY9oWM5OfeCcNlPM1

Now, though, talking to Joe Rogan on his podcast, Gibson says that he’s hoping to start shooting the new movie in 2026, and that it is currently called ‘The Resurrection of the Christ.’

When Rogan asked who would be starring as Jesus, Gibson told him that ‘Passion’ actor Jim Caviezel would be back in the lead role, with digital de-aging technology employed to wipe 20 years from Caviezel’s looks.

There was chatter last September about Gibson being spotted scouting locations in Malta and the Southern Italian region of Puglia where he visited various rural locations, including the ancient towns of Ginosa, Gravina Laterza and Altamura, but the director himself didn’t comment.

Gibson has been at work on the sequel’s script with Randall Wallace, who has written the likes of ‘Braveheart’ for the director and did uncredited screenplay polishes on ‘Hacksaw Ridge.’

This was what Gibson told Rogan about the script so far:

“There’s a lot required because it’s an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like this. My brother and I and Randall all sort of congregated on this. So there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff. And I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, you’re in another realm. You need to go to hell.”

That lines up with some of what Gibson has said in the past, including in this interview with the National Catholic Register in which he said:

“It’s not a linear narrative. You have to juxtapose the central event that I’m trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past, and in other realms, and that’s kind of getting a little sci-fi out there.”

What else is happening with Mel Gibson?

Next up for Gibson cinematically is his latest directing gig, action thriller ‘Flight Risk,’ which stars Mark Wahlberg. It’ll land in theaters on January 24th.

Acting-wise, Gibson is part of the cast for action pic ‘Mermaid,’ which sees a single father looking to protect his daughter from the corrupt world around them.

And in real life, terms, the actor/filmmaker recently faced the challenge of losing one of his homes in the wildfires ravaging the hills above Los Angeles.

Here’s what he told NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports:

“I thought ‘I wonder if my place is still there’, but when I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there. I’ve never seen such a complete burn. It is obviously devastating, it’s emotional. I lived there for about 14, 15 years so it was home to me. I had a lot of personal things there that I can’t get back –– everything from photographs to files to just personal things that I had from over the years. That can all be replaced. These are only things. And the good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well, and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way.”

What has Mel Gibson said about ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’?

While ‘The Passion’ is Gibson’s most prominent Jesus-themed cinematic experience, he nearly showed up in another, years earlier.

As part of the Rogan podcast, Gibson revealed that, while in London and sick with food poisoning in the late 1980s, he was contacted by Martin Scorsese about starring in ‘The Last Temptation of Christ.’

    This is what Gibson recalls:

“While I was there, Scorsese calls the room and says, ‘Come here, I want to talk to you.’ I go and I talk to Martin and he’s in his room and all the windows, the screens, he’s drawn on. He’s got 18 different TVs going on at the same time in this dark room. He’s talking to me about ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ and he wants me to play Jesus and I said, ‘Wow. I’m not doing that.’ ”

Still, Gibson goes on to say that he’s happy that Willem Dafoe took the role on instead, admitting:

“He did something that I think nobody else did and I think he pulled it off because I totally believed it. He emptied himself out. He invited something else in. He meditated and let Christ in.”

When will ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ be in theaters?

Though it has been in development since at least 2016, Gibson’s new movie has yet to secure

Fun movie fact: back in the late 1980s, directors Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg were developing movies that would become memorable for them both. But here’s the twist… the movies were ‘Cape Fear’ and ‘Schindler’s List,’ and Spielberg was interested in the former, while Scorsese was figuring out the latter.

One quick switch later and 1991 brought us ‘Cape Fear,’ Scorsese’s take on the 1957 John D. MacDonald book ‘The Executioners.’ In 1993, Spielberg brought us ‘Schindler’s List’ to Oscar-winning effect.

Now, both filmmakers are involved with a new take on the former project, as Apple TV+ has flashed the greenlight for a series adaptation of the novel, with Javier Bardem aboard, according to Deadline.

MacDonald’s book has been adapted before –– a 1962 film, which also changed the name to ‘Cape Fear,’ and was directed by J. Lee Thompson from storyboards devised by original director Alfred Hitchcock.

That version starred Gregory Peck and Polly Bergen as a lawyer and his wife threatened by newly-released convict Max Cady (played by Robert Mitchum).

In Scorsese’s movie, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange were the couple, while Robert De Niro (shocker!) was Cady.

For the TV series, described as “a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century,” a storm is coming for happily married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden when Max Cady (Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, gets out of prison.”

Anyone who has seen ‘No Country for Old Men’ or even ‘Skyfall’ knows that Bardem can play a memorable, dangerous villain.

The new show will be run by Nick Antosca, who credits include ‘The Act,’ ‘Antlers,’ ‘Candy,’ and most recently, overseeing the ‘Chucky’ small screen series.

Apple has been developing the show for a while, but even with Scorsese and Spielberg’s backing, the show hasn’t been official until Bardem signed on to play Cady.

And the actor will also be seen in next year’s big Apple movie, ‘F1’ alongside Brad Pitt. That film is scheduled to arrive on June 25th.

When will the ‘Cape Fear’ TV series be on screens?

Apple has only just greenlit the show thanks to the addition to Bardem, so release details are a ways off for now.

Roger Corman, who became famous –– and sometimes infamous –– for his B-movie output and championing of other filmmakers, died on May 9th aged 98.

Corman was known for opening doors to many others through his work and movies, and while he didn’t win Oscars or see huge box office with his films, he had a huge impact on cinema and pop culture.

Born in Detroit, Corman moved with his family in 1940 to Los Angeles. He attended Beverly Hills High School and then Stanford, majoring in engineering. He admitted to being infatuated by movies from the time he came to California.

Yet if he had dreams of entering the movie world as soon as possible, he was stymied by military service and education elsewhere, including at Oxford in England. The early 1950s saw him working odd jobs and collecting unemployment and that period led to a renewed spark in his chosen career: while working as a script reader, he figured he could do better, sitting down to write ‘Highway Dragnet’ and selling the screenplay to Allied Artists for $4,000.

That, plus cash scrounged up from family and friends saw him launch his time as a producer, bringing ‘The Monster From the Ocean Floor’ to screens.

    1023593

He joined forces with Sam Arkoff of American International Pictures and between 1955-60 Corman produced or directed more than 30 films for AIP, all budgeted at less than $100,000 and produced in two weeks or less. They included Westerns (‘Five Guns West,’ ‘Gunslinger’); horror and science fiction (‘Day the World Ended,’ ‘The Undead’); as well as teen movies such as ‘Carnival Rock’ and ‘Rock All Night.’

While producing, Corman also wrote and directed movies of his own, including ‘Frankenstein Unbound’, ‘Battle Beyond the Stars’, ‘Deathsport’, ‘The Trip’, and even an effort for a major studio, with Columbia’s ‘The Wild Angels’.

Yet it was in the B-movie world that Corman truly flourished, spinning low budgets into small hits and churning out content, including a run of Edgar Allen Poe adaptations.

Corman certainly had an eye for talent; among the people whose careers he helped nurture are the likes of Ellen Burstyn, Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro, screenwriters such as Robert Towne and directors like Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante and Peter Bogdanovich their starts.

He also backed arthouse films from around the world, including work by the likes of Ingrid Bergman and Werner Herzog. He reinvented their marketing and distribution, booking them in a wider variety of venues and giving audiences outsides the major cities a taste of world cinema they had not previously enjoyed.

    Preview:

    • Martin Scorsese wants to make two new movies, one about Jesus and one about Frank Sinatra.
    • Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are aboard the Sinatra biopic.
    • Both movies are facing challenges right now.

He may not have taken home a big haul of awards for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, but Martin Scorsese shows no sign of backing away from making movies. He’s got two big projects –– both of which have been percolating on his To Do list for a few years –– that he’s looking to now shoot back to back.

And one, a drama about a particularly fractious time in legendary crooner Frank Sinatra’s personal life, is a particular passion project, and one that he’s finally pushing to put together with Leonardo DiCaprio (of course!) and Jennifer Lawrence starring. So let’s take a look at these two new potential movies, shall we?

What is Martin Scorsese’s Frank Sinatra biopic?

When he was out promoting his 2016 religious drama ‘Silence’, Scorsese dropped word that he had been looking to make a Frank Sinatra film with DiCaprio starring. It had been in development since at least 2011, with ‘Field of DreamsPhil Alden Robinson writing a script.

Little is known about the exact story at the time, but since Lawrence is on to be Ava Gardner, who infamously broke up Sinatra’s marriage to Nancy Barbato (and became his second wife), you can imagine why this one hit a snag with the singer’s family. Tina Sinatra controls the late performer’s estate, and she seems none too happy with Scorsese’s plans.

Apple, which handed the director a $215 million budget for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is, according to Variety, looking to stay in business with the director, though Sony is currently the front-runner to make the movie.

Yet the director is still aiming to make this movie once he’s wrapped on the Jesus film. Which brings us to that…

What is Martin Scorsese’s new film about Jesus?

In the same report about the Sinatra film, Variety mentions that Scorsese would first want to revisit the life of Jesus, who he infamously brought to screens in 1988’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’.

Life of Jesus,’, which Scorsese has been drumming up independent financing to make, would be based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book. It’s the same approach he took to ‘Silence’ (which also was adapted from an Endō novel). And it might also have another ‘Silence’ connection, since one of that film’s stars, Andrew Garfield, is being considered for the Jesus project, though it’s unclear if the 40-year-old is being eyed for the titular role or to play one of the disciples. Miles Teller has also been linked to the film, which Scorsese wants to kick off shooting later this year in Israel, Italy and Egypt.

That first location is the one that might cause the most trouble, since the current war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas is affecting the region.

We’ll see if this either film truly gets moving at last, but Scorsese certainly seems committed to having them both on screen before he retires (take that, Quentin Tarantino!)

When would either new Scorsese film hit theaters?

No details are available for either film’s release plans, especially since they don’t yet have confirmed distribution –– or even schedules at this point.
