On Prime Video on October 1st is ‘Play Dirty’, the new crime thriller from ‘Lethal Weapon’ writer and ‘Iron Man 3’ co-writer/director Shane Black, who here adapts the work of cult novelist Donald E. Westlake.

    ZfzsuxMetk7XEd8SjCF4J3

Starring Mark Wahlberg (‘The Fighter’) as inveterate thief Parker, the cast also includes LaKeith Stanfield (‘Sorry to Bother You’), Rosa Salazar (‘Alita: Battle Angel’), Tony Shalhoub (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) and Nat Wolff (‘Paper Towns’).

Once the king of the 1980s and 1990s action-comedy script sale, since turning his hand to directing, Shane Black has had a somewhat more mixed career. There have been definite highs (‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ and ‘Iron Man 3’) and true lows (his most recent directorial effort was the ill-fated ‘The Predator’ back in 2018). And even when he’s hit the mark, the box office results have not been kind (‘The Nice Guys’ really deserved better).

With ‘Play Dirty’, he’s got some choice (if frequently adapted) source material in Donald E. Westlake’s Parker character, and while he manages to pull off a convincing, double-triple-quadruple-crossing crime caper, there’s a big problem sitting squarely at the top of the cast list.

    Script and Direction

Director Shane Black at the premiere of 'Play Dirty'. Photo: Prime Video.

Black, working here with Charles Mondry (2024’s ‘Road House’) and Anthony Bagarozzi (who co-wrote ‘The Nice Guys’ with the director), has cooked up a twisty heist thriller that draws from Westlake’s novels but isn’t a direct adaptation of any of them.

It’s certainly chock full of action, though the pacing suffers some when the filmmaker takes his foot off the gas (or the train pedal) to dig down into exposition, but that is largely carried by some great actors spouting swear-laden dialogue at each other. Oh, and no points for guessing that the movie is set during Black’s trademark Christmas season.

    Cast and Performances

The elephant in the room in ‘Play Dirty’s case is Mark Wahlberg, who brings about as much charisma to the lead role as some wet, peeling wallpaper. It’s even harder to stomach when you know that Black’s old pal Robert Downey Jr. was originally attached to star.

Still, the rest of the cast essentially act Wahlberg off the screen, with particular plaudits due the likes of Rosa Salazar, Keegan-Michael Key, LaKeith Stanfield and Tony Shalhoub, the latter getting to show off his gangster side with aplomb.

While nowhere near a classic Shane Black offering (come on Prime Video, just buy the rights and let him reunite Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe for ‘The Nice Guys 2’!), it’s diverting enough, even if the lead character is something of a joyless chore rather than the sharp criminal of the books.

‘Play Dirty’ receives 70 out of 100.

What’s the story of ‘Play Dirty’?

An expert thief rolls out the biggest heist of his life as Parker (Mark Wahlberg), along with Grofield (LaKeith Stanfield), Zen (Rosa Salazar) and a skilled crew, stumble onto a score that pits them against the New York mob.

    Preview:

    • Mel Gibson is aiming to shoot the ‘Passion of the Christ’ sequel in 2026.
    • Randall Wallace wrote the script.
    • Jim Caviezel appears likely to return as Jesus.

The Passion of the Christ,’ Mel Gibson’s 2004 take on Jesus’ final days on earth up to his crucifixion, became the largest-grossing independent film of all time with a worldwide box office of nearly $612 million.

Though the film was considered anti-Semitic due to its implication that Jewish leaders were to blame for Jesus’ death, that controversy did little to halt its popularity, with Church leaders buying out theaters to screen the movie to congregants.

Gibson has long talked about wanting to make a sequel to that movie, possibly a two-part epic, but despite spending years developing it has seemed no closer to actually rolling cameras.

    SMLVjQY9oWM5OfeCcNlPM1

Now, though, talking to Joe Rogan on his podcast, Gibson says that he’s hoping to start shooting the new movie in 2026, and that it is currently called ‘The Resurrection of the Christ.’

When Rogan asked who would be starring as Jesus, Gibson told him that ‘Passion’ actor Jim Caviezel would be back in the lead role, with digital de-aging technology employed to wipe 20 years from Caviezel’s looks.

There was chatter last September about Gibson being spotted scouting locations in Malta and the Southern Italian region of Puglia where he visited various rural locations, including the ancient towns of Ginosa, Gravina Laterza and Altamura, but the director himself didn’t comment.

What did Mel Gibson say about the ‘Resurrection of the Christ’ script?

Gibson has been at work on the sequel’s script with Randall Wallace, who has written the likes of ‘Braveheart’ for the director and did uncredited screenplay polishes on ‘Hacksaw Ridge.’

This was what Gibson told Rogan about the script so far:

“There’s a lot required because it’s an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like this. My brother and I and Randall all sort of congregated on this. So there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff. And I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, you’re in another realm. You need to go to hell.”

That lines up with some of what Gibson has said in the past, including in this interview with the National Catholic Register in which he said:

“It’s not a linear narrative. You have to juxtapose the central event that I’m trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past, and in other realms, and that’s kind of getting a little sci-fi out there.”

What else is happening with Mel Gibson?

Next up for Gibson cinematically is his latest directing gig, action thriller ‘Flight Risk,’ which stars Mark Wahlberg. It’ll land in theaters on January 24th.

Acting-wise, Gibson is part of the cast for action pic ‘Mermaid,’ which sees a single father looking to protect his daughter from the corrupt world around them.

And in real life, terms, the actor/filmmaker recently faced the challenge of losing one of his homes in the wildfires ravaging the hills above Los Angeles.

Here’s what he told NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports:

“I thought ‘I wonder if my place is still there’, but when I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there. I’ve never seen such a complete burn. It is obviously devastating, it’s emotional. I lived there for about 14, 15 years so it was home to me. I had a lot of personal things there that I can’t get back –– everything from photographs to files to just personal things that I had from over the years. That can all be replaced. These are only things. And the good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well, and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way.”

What has Mel Gibson said about ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’?

While ‘The Passion’ is Gibson’s most prominent Jesus-themed cinematic experience, he nearly showed up in another, years earlier.

As part of the Rogan podcast, Gibson revealed that, while in London and sick with food poisoning in the late 1980s, he was contacted by Martin Scorsese about starring in ‘The Last Temptation of Christ.’

    This is what Gibson recalls:

“While I was there, Scorsese calls the room and says, ‘Come here, I want to talk to you.’ I go and I talk to Martin and he’s in his room and all the windows, the screens, he’s drawn on. He’s got 18 different TVs going on at the same time in this dark room. He’s talking to me about ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ and he wants me to play Jesus and I said, ‘Wow. I’m not doing that.’ ”

Still, Gibson goes on to say that he’s happy that Willem Dafoe took the role on instead, admitting:

“He did something that I think nobody else did and I think he pulled it off because I totally believed it. He emptied himself out. He invited something else in. He meditated and let Christ in.”

When will ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ be in theaters?

Though it has been in development since at least 2016, Gibson’s new movie has yet to secure

  • Movie Review: ‘Arthur the King’

In theaters on Friday, March 15th, ‘Arthur the King’ is the latest movie to be based on a true-life tale that throws all you might expect in about endurance, endeavor, sportsmanship and the love of animals, but slips into a few too many easy plot and emotional pitfalls.

Burdened with the fact that you’ll surely know the outcome even if you don’t the original story, the movie doesn’t offer up enough that feels fresh for the journey –– beyond the sweet lead dog, of course.

Does ‘Arthur the King’ Win the Race?

As ‘Shakespeare in Love’ reminded us, audiences love a bit with a dog. And ‘Arthur the King’ certainly has lots of heart-tugging bits with a dog. So if you can’t resist a true story that includes charming canine action, then the movie delivers.

The problem lies in the other areas –– though the story of Mikael Lindnord (Mark Wahlberg’s character is renamed to Michael Light) boasts plenty of challenge and struggle, the movie never quite finds a way to make you care about the man the way it does about the dog (and the canine companion doesn’t enter the picture until much later than you expect, despite his own brief initial storyline), meaning you might feel like you were sold a bill of goods, slogging your way through some very predictable team building and early race stages before you get to Arthur.

    Script and Direction

Mark Wahlberg as Michael in 'Arthur The King.'

Written by Michael Brandt (‘Wanted’, ‘3:10 to Yuma’ ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’) based on Mikael Lindnord’s story, the movie, despite an already impressive narrative, feels the need to layer on plenty of Hollywood schmaltz. There’s the sweet, understanding wife (herself a racer, though retired) and daughter who track our hero’s progress from the home front. The arrogant former teammate who returns to help and whose social media/status obsession is both a hindrance and a help. An older colleague whose health issues slow the team, and a character whose ailing father encourages her to join the team despite her desire to stay behind and care for him.

When you have a predictable story, you need layers, but the ones that the movie chooses simply make it seem that much more cliched. And in keeping with a Hollywood-ized version of a true story that aims to leave you feeling happy and not conflicted, it naturally sands off some of the thornier elements, such as the controversy around Arthur being adopted and brought back to the States, whereupon a family claimed that Lindnord had effectively dognapped their pet (it all worked out for the best).

And the direction of Simon Cellan Jones, who worked with Wahlberg on Apple TV+’s recent movie ‘The Family Plan’, doesn’t really do much to help matters. Though he has some beautiful jungle backdrops for his characters, and a built-in story to cheer for, the overloads the movie with unearned sentiment and moments that will come across as less than authentic and far from original.

Even with the racing elements, the movie seems to wander more than it zips along (even with an actual zipline as part of the plot), and when the score goes into “inspirational overload” it’s more likely to make you sigh than cheer.

Still, there’s enough pleasure to be found, especially in the charming doggie moments and the interesting real-life racing elements –– adventure specialist Bear Grylls helps you keep track of what’s happening, offering the benefit of his experience, even if it does sometimes come across as watching a Twitch feed of someone playing a video game more than news coverage.

Wahlberg is largely on autopilot here –– as the adventure racer, he’s pretty much exactly what you expect from the actor, with little room for nuance. But his low-key charisma works for an endurance athlete, and he at least looks the part. That said, you’re never really in doubt that he’s going to succeed (on the dog adoption front, if nothing else).

As Leo, Simu Liu manages to walk the tricky tightrope of seeming smug without being unlikable. The Instagram-happy character is a solid addition to the team, and Liu juggles his initial cynicism and later bond with Arthur effectively.

Ali Suliman plays Chik, an old friend of Michaels, and a savvy navigator with seven world championships under his belt. But now, suffering with old injuries, he’s not sure he wants to jump back into the racing world. You can guess what actually happens just by reading this character summary, but Suliman at least brings real personality to role and plays well off of Wahlberg.

Nathalie Emmanuel is somewhat lumbered with the role of Olivia, the daughter of an ailing climbing legend. There’s not much to chew on here for the actor, who nevertheless does what she can. But at times she’s reduced to being someone Wahlberg has to rescue or simply fading into the background.

And the less said about wife Helen (Juliet Rylance) and daughter Ruby (Cece Valentina), who could be cardboard cut-outs for all the actual character they have. Both actors are fine, but they’re such nothingburger roles you feel for them.

While it mostly has to rely on its canine star rather than its humans for its pleasures, ‘Arthur the King’ does have some lush backdrops and an interesting world in the adventure racing sphere.

It’s just a shame that it falls down every single cliché cliff possible at the same time.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of sitting down in-person with Mark Wahlberg to talk about his work on ‘Arthur the King,’ what audiences can expect, the true story it is based on, physically preparing to play an adventure racer, bonding with his canine co-star on set, and his love for his own dogs.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Wahlberg, Simu Liu, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ali Suliman, director Simon Cellan Jones, and real-life subject Michael Brandt.

Moviefone: To begin with, what would you say to audiences sitting down to watch this movie to prepare them for the theatrical experience they are about to have?

Mark Wahlberg: You’re going to laugh, you’re going to cry, you’re going to cheer, and then you’re going to go out and adopt a dog. That’s just what’s going to happen. But no, it’s so exciting for this movie, especially, to be in theaters. I went to a screening yesterday in a theater that I used to visit three or four times with my kids and my wife, and I would go once or twice on my own, and we always just took away that experience of sitting there laughing, crying and enjoying films with others and strangers. So, to see that happening again and giving people so much hope and so much joy, it’s nice.

MF: Can you talk about how Arthur changes Michael’s life through the course of this film, and have you ever had an experience with a dog that really changed your life?

MW: Look, my dogs, we just finally potty-trained the four of them, so that’s changed my life quite a bit because I can just feel comfortable walking barefoot to the kitchen in the morning without turning the lights on and waking somebody else up by turning the lights on in the hallway. But it was remarkable to me because Michael was so obsessed with the idea of winning. He was obsessed with proving that he was good enough to become a world champion, and he was so close. Everything that he had done up until that point was very selfish. I mean, let’s not try to water that down. Athletes must be self-absorbed and self-obsessed to be able to go out there and give that kind of time, attention and dedication to something, especially adventure racing. So, to see him make that drastic a decision and something that’s so selfless and will alter the rest of his life in the way that it does… but everything happens for a reason, and I know he wouldn’t change it for anything.

Simu Liu as Leo and Mark Wahlberg as Michael in 'Arthur The King.'
(L to R) Simu Liu as Leo and Mark Wahlberg as Michael in ‘Arthur The King.’ Photo Credit: Carlos Rodriguez.

MF: Did you bond with the dog playing Arthur immediately and what was it like working with him?

MW: We were neighbors, and we had to spend quite a bit of time together because we were going to be together for most of the time. I would immediately start feeding him things he wasn’t supposed to eat, or the trainer wouldn’t normally allow, and just getting to spend that time. But I’d never, ever imagined that he would be so engaged and so connected to me on an intimate and emotional level. It was incredible.

Ali Suliman as Chik and Mark Wahlberg as Michael in 'Arthur The King.'
(L to R) Ali Suliman as Chik and Mark Wahlberg as Michael in ‘Arthur The King.’ Photo Credit: Carlos Rodriguez.

MF: Finally, can you talk about the challenges of physically preparing to play an adventure racer and what was it like for you to have a glimpse into their world?

MW: The thing that prepared me the most was doing ‘Lone Survivor’ because for something like adventure racing, it takes a different person. They just have a different makeup. It’s all about suffering. It’s about being able to endure mentally and physically. The level of suffering that they go through and the things that they put themselves through, you must be a special individual to be able to do that. So, I think tearing my meniscus on the first day of shooting put me in the head space that I needed to be. I certainly felt that pain every day, whether I was walking back to the set after. I mean, you felt it every day, but you also felt that you’re onto something and doing something special, and you don’t get that kind of fulfillment and that energy that you can’t wait to get back there the next day and continue that on a lot of films. So, it is something that happens rarely, it’s a rare thing.

Assassins on screen. Every time they try to retire or devote themselves to a quieter life, their past always catches up with them. Just as Keanu ReevesJohn Wick. Or Liam Neeson’s Bryan Mills, whose ‘Taken’ character ends up having to put his particular set of skills back into play when his daughter is kidnapped.

It stands to reason that cinematic assassins should just stick with their regular jobs, but still they keep yearning for something more –– or perhaps less (at least from a stress/danger point of view). Such is the case with Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) in Apple’s new action comedy ‘The Family Plan’, who has swapped international assassination (of, he’s quick to point out when the truth is revealed, Very Bad People) for a seemingly sleepy world of marriage and kids in Buffalo New York.

But with so many examples of this story already out there, the biggest question is whether ‘The Family Plan’ does enough to stand out.

Is ‘The Family Plan’ a good pick for your family?

Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

For the most part, the answer to that question is… Not really. This is a fairly bland example of the genre with one or two moments of invention that happen later in the story.

After a few early years of interesting material, Wahlberg has largely settled into a predictable mix of action movies and comedies –– you might find yourself wondering what his occasional collaborator Peter Berg would have done with this, but then it’s not really the sort of movie that Berg would gravitate towards since the rougher edges have been well and truly sanded off here.

Writer David Coggeshall is more normally known for the horror likes of ‘Orphan: First Kill’ and 2019’s ‘Prey’ (not the ‘Predator’ prequel, a slightly less effective tale of a young man hunted by a creature on an island retreat), but he does his best with mixing the action and comedy beats here.

The screenplay for ‘The Family Plan’ mostly goes through the motions of introducing Dan’s seemingly happy family life, bringing up the issues with his kids (one wants to throw away her long-held Stanford dreams to follow a boyfriend to a far lesser college), the other has secretly been playing video games at a high level with the gamer tag “Kyllboi”.

When Dan’s old life starts to invade his own, the clues are a little easy to spot (a character who approaches Jessica early on might as well have “villain” stamped across their forehead), but it at least has a few fun set pieces early on.

As for the visual side of things, director Simon Cellan Jones has largely worked in television comedy/drama, though he has branched out into the more action-orientated likes of ‘See’, ‘The Expanse’ and ‘Jessica Jones’.

His big screen work has largely been in the rom-com and comedy-drama sphere, and he does what he can to turn the set pieces into watchable encounters. A fight in a grocery store is an early highlight, and the big finale has its moments. For the most part, though, this isn’t going to worry the likes of ‘Wick’ or the likes of David Leitch for inventiveness.

    ‘The Family Plan’: Performances

(L to R) Michelle Monaghan and Mark Wahlberg in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Wahlberg is on strictly standard mode here, Dan Morgan a blandly likeable leading man who you can mostly buy as a skilled assassin even as he’s whipping through a diaper change like he’s loading a gun. But if you’re truly supposed to care about him and his story, there’s not a lot here to grab hold on to.

Michelle Monaghan, meanwhile, is saddled with another slightly thankless role as the other half to an action man who doesn’t realize what’s really going on until the danger intrudes on her life (she’s been down this path before, most notably in ‘Mission: Impossible III’). Jessica at least has some depth to her, and there’s a moment near the end where she gets to be both comedic and badass.

Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby as their kids are largely called upon to be bratty and then helpful, and they do what they can to breathe life into the roles. Less well served is Ciarán Hinds as the antagonist, though even he has something of a backstory. Pretty much everyone else is reduced to stock henchmen characters, some not even blessed with actual names. They’re literally cannon fodder.

Despite all the faint praise in the preceding review, ‘The Family Plan’ is not entirely without merit, as it has some chuckles to offer and a brace of stunt moments that do bring something entertaining.

It’s strictly straight-down-the-line work, but there’s nothing wrong with that if you’re in the mood for it.

(L to R) Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

In his career, Mark Wahlberg has brought us plenty of family comedy and has also been part of some high-adrenaline action movies.

But he’s rarely had the chance to combine them. That changes now as he’s the star of Apple and Skydance’s ‘The Family Plan’, which sees him as a man who has to protect his family when his past comes back to haunt him.

In ‘The Family Plan’, Wahlberg plays Dan Morgan, who loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that’s only half the story.

Decades earlier, he was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world’s deadliest threats. When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas.

Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity.

Directed by Simon Cellan Jones, who has worked on TV shows such as ‘See’, ‘Ballers’ and Netflix’s ‘The Diplomat’, ‘The Family Plan’ takes aim at being a fun watch for the family.

Moviefone recently attended a virtual press conference for ‘The Family Plan.’ Taking part were stars Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Margaret Colletti and Van Crosby and director Simon Cellan Jones.

Here are 10 things we learned from the press conference, edited for clarity and length.

    1) Michelle Monaghan and Mark Wahlberg appreciated different things about their characters

Michelle Monaghan and Mark Wahlberg in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Michelle Monaghan and Mark Wahlberg in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

The pair both found something to like about the people they were playing on screen, with Wahlberg as family man/former assassin Dan Morgan and Monaghan as wife Jessica.

Michelle Monaghan: I like how spontaneous [Jessica] is. Yeah, I think she’s a really spontaneous character. She is up for anything, and she really wants more of that in her life. And so that was fun. I got to do a lot of stunts and things related to that and I loved that. I loved the roller coaster, loved the all the stunts. That was all really, really fun for me.

Wahlberg, however ,was focused more on the side that Dan, his character, shows to the family, rather than his former life. It’s something he gets to do in real life when he swaps being a movie star for being a dad.

Mark Wahlberg: What I liked was that he was embracing being boring. I could relate to that. I’ve adopted that attitude quite some time ago. I get to be fun and exciting during my job, but other than that, I’m just boring dad.

    2) Mark Wahlberg Really Enjoyed Working with Director Simon Cellan Jones

Mark Wahlberg in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
Mark Wahlberg in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Wahlberg and his ‘The Family Plan’ director Jones clearly got on like a house on fire. They clicked so well, in fact, that Wahlberg has gone on to work with Jones on a new movie, ‘Arthur the King’.

MW: I’ve worked with him now two films, five seasons of a television show and I just learned how to pronounce his name! He’s like a brother. I mean, we bonded so quickly. Such fun, energetic, super talented, always prepared but game for anything. Willing to try anything. Very patient. This took me back to the days where movie-making wasn’t so labor-intensive and taxing. It was a joyful experience, it really was. And I accredit Simon and Michelle especially for that.

    3) Doing a Keg Stand Was Michelle Monaghan’s Favorite Part of Making the Movie

Michelle Monaghan in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
Michelle Monaghan in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Even given the stunt training she went through, or time with the movie’s family, Monaghan admits that a sequence where she heads to a college and ends up doing a keg stand was her most memorable moment.

MM: That keg stand was really fun. I loved to see that in the script. I’d grown up in the Midwest and I was very familiar with keg stands for better or for worse. So that was really funny, a little blast from the past. And I guess learning the little pole vault stunt and doing some of those scenes were really fun as well.

    4) Simon Cellan Jones was a little daunted by the scale of the film, but ended up loving it

Mark Wahlberg in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
Mark Wahlberg in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

While director Simon Cellan Jones has made movies before (including 2000’s ‘Some Voices’ and 2002’s ‘The One and Only’), he’s largely spent the last few years making TV, such as ‘See’, ‘Ballers’ and ‘The Diplomat’. And ‘The Family Plan’ is by some measure the biggest movie he’s tackled so far.

Simon Cellan Jones: Working on a big film like this, for the first week, I was terrified. And then I went, “wait a minute, this is really fun. It’s really exciting.” I was working with fantastic people, actors and crew. We had enough money to do some ambitious stuff. Believe me, I don’t want to go back. I love it like this!

    5) Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan related to the road trip scenes

(L to R) Michelle Monaghan and Mark Wahlberg in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

As Wahlberg’s Dan takes the family on what they think is an impromptu vacation, he realizes that those threatening them might track their phones. So he collects everyone’s devices and throws them off a bridge, much to their shock.

For Monaghan she felt seen as a mother who is occasionally frustrated with her kids’ phone use.

MM: For me, one of my favorite scenes is the scene were we’re in the road trip and Mark takes all the devices and throws them out the window. That is so relatable to my family. That is wish fulfillment! That is exactly right! The way that it is edited with everyone’s reaction, is just was such a great edit. But that is definitely something that I relate to so very much. In the car we think that we’re going to connect, and then everybody’s got their own headphones on and everybody’s doing their own thing and it makes me crazy.

Wahlberg also saw the reality of the situation.

MW: The only real power you have over your children still might be to be able to threaten them, to cut them off from what they think is the most important way to communicate even though it’s so impersonal. But yeah, that was a very fun moment.

    6) Mark Wahlberg was happy to get the chance to film in Las Vegas

Mark Wahlberg in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
Mark Wahlberg in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

While the majority of the movie was shot in Atlanta, Las Vegas did serve as a location for the big finale of the film –– and some scenes were filmed there.

MW: It meant a lot. Being a new resident, I think I was excited to really be able to showcase Vegas in a way that I thought would, again just make it more appealing because obviously people know Vegas for the Strip, but there’s a lot more to it than that and it is very family oriented in, as far as its entertainment and appeal. And I moved there for my kids. So, I was very, very excited to not only shoot the film there but also premiere the film there and hopefully be able to build a studio and make films there.

    7) Working with Babies is as Tough as You Might Imagine

Van Crosby, Iliana Norris, Michelle Monaghan and Zoe Colletti in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Van Crosby, Iliana Norris, Michelle Monaghan and Zoe Colletti in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

The old adage reads “never work with children or animals”, but ‘The Family Plan’s team needed a baby for the Morgan dynamic to work. Twins Vienna and Iliana Norris played Max, the youngest Morgan. Who certainly gets to take part in some big scenes…

Zoe Margaret Colletti, for one, was very happy to spend time with them.

Zoe Margaret Colletti: They’re my favorite costars. I love them. Their names are Ilena and Vienna, and they’re the cutest little sweetest girls. They are playing a boy, but they are two little girls and they’re precious.

Acting alongside them was one thing. But directing them and making sure all was safe during big action moments? That was quite another for director Simon Cellan Jones.

SCJ: They worked out in the end, but I’m going to level with you. We had a big, big fight in a supermarket, which, so far, so normal. But there’s one kicker on it. There’s a baby strapped into a baby Bjorn. And we had two twins playing the baby Max who were both fantastic, but this was their first big heavy day. And of course one of them is strapped to Mark Wahlberg and he’s lovely with kids, so he looks after them very well, but he’s fighting and he’s moving around and he’s doing all that stuff. And the babies were going, “Wait a minute, wait a minute. This is not in our contract!” So we had to be very, very patient that day. It worked out. But there were a couple of times when I was going, “Oh my God, my career is over.”

    8) The Biggest Lesson Mark Wahlberg Took Away from the Movie Was About Family

Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

MW: We have to embrace [change] too though, to allow that to happen and embrace the evolution and the growth. Sometimes we find ourselves wanting our kids to stay small and little forever and we know that is impossible. It’s inevitable that they’ll grow and change. You want to be able to embrace that you’re giving life, you’re not having somebody that’s going to be your little pet forever. So you want to be able to hopefully just guide them and protect them and teach them and point them in the right direction and most importantly be a good example. But yes, it’s hard to see them grow and change and go off to college. My daughter now is at college, but at the same time I’m looking forward for my wife and I to have more time together to do things on our own and not have to lock the door!

    9) Mark Wahlberg Watched an Early version of the Movie With His Kids

Mark Wahlberg and Iliana Norris in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Mark Wahlberg and Iliana Norris in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

As one of the producers of the movie as well as being the star, Wahlberg had access to the film at an early stage of the post-production phase. And he found a handy test audience to help judge if it was working.

MW: I think watching it the first time at a very, very early stage of the edit with my entire family was a lot of fun because it wasn’t a thing where I invited everybody to come and sit and watch the movie. I was just sitting at home in my living room in Vegas watching it and everybody just kind of started to gather around and watch and started to really enjoy it. And it wasn’t until Michelle flipped the toothbrush out of her mouth in the movie that everybody looked at me like, whoa, ‘you didn’t tell us about this part!’

    10) A Joke About The Name “Van” Was in the Script Before Van Crosby was Cast

Zoe Colletti, Iliana Norris, Michelle Monaghan and Van Crosby in 'The Family Plan,' premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Zoe Colletti, Iliana Norris, Michelle Monaghan and Van Crosby in ‘The Family Plan,’ premiering December 15, 2023 on Apple TV+.

As Dan puts his plans in place to try and have his family disappear under new identities to avoid his old associates, he gets them new passports. Kyle Morgan discovers he has the name “Van”, which leads sister Nina to crack, “you’re named after a vehicle!” It sounds like an in-joke about Van Crosby, who plays Kyle, but it predates him.

Van Crosby: That was in the original script. When I got the script for the audition, that was already in there, so that was completely by chance. That was not written in at all, so I was just as surprised too. I was like, “What? That’s my name.” Yeah. So yeah, that was already there.

Not content with dominating the televised animation landscape with shows such as ‘Family Guy’ and ‘American Dad’, Seth MacFarlane has also made movies, with the ‘Ted’ films –– about a foul-mouthed toy (voiced by MacFarlane) who is best friends with John Bennett (played in the movies by Mark Wahlberg).

MacFarlane is now bringing the character and his story to his small-screen stomping grounds via a new Peacock prequel series, also titled ‘Ted’.

The first trailer for the show is now online, and you can watch it above.

    What’s the Story of ‘Ted’?

While the movies do kick off with young John Bennett wishing his favorite toy could talk, the new show will fill in some of the storytelling gaps.

It’s 1993, and Ted the bear’s (Seth MacFarlane) moment of fame has passed. He’s now living back home in Framingham, Massachusetts with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett (Max Burkholder), along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan (MacFarlane regular Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach) and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham).

Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s a loyal pal who’s always willing to go out on a limb for friendship.

MacFarlane, along with co-showrunners Brad Walsh and Paul Corrigan, issued the following statement about the new series:

“Each generation develops its own unique artistic style, its own way of seeing the world. In the twenties, it was the subversive musical phrasings of jazz. In the fifties, it was the bold brushwork of the abstract expressionists. Our generation’s unique art is streaming content based on previously successful intellectual property. In that proud tradition, we humbly give you ‘Ted’. Our series is a prequel to the Ted movies. It takes place in the nineties but is based on the timeless truth that being sixteen sucks. The only thing that makes it tolerable is going through it with a friend, even if that friend is a has-been magical teddy bear with a foul mouth and a proclivity for drug use. The three of us were teenagers in the nineties and grew up in and around Boston, where the show takes place, so many of these stories are personal for us. We were able to put the characters through some of the same indignities and milestones we experienced back then. Also, we made stuff up (it’s a lot of pages to fill and real life is mostly boring).”

  • Director John Hamburg Talks Netflix’s ‘Me Time’

    jAIgNFcO

Premiering on Netflix beginning August 26th is the new comedy ‘Me Time’ from writer and director John Hamburg (‘Along Came Polly,’ ‘I Love You, Man’).

The movie stars Kevin Hart (‘DC League of Super Pets’) as Sonny, a stay-at-home dad who finds himself with some “me time” for the first time in years while his wife (Regina Hall) and kids are away.

He soon reconnects with his former best friend Huck (‘Father Stu’s Mark Wahlberg) for a wild weekend that nearly upends his life.

In addition to Hart, Wahlberg and Hall, the movie also features Jimmy O. Yang (‘Easter Sunday’), John Amos (‘Coming 2 America’), and musician Seal.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking to writer/director John Hamburg about his work on ‘Me Time,’ making a “bromance,” working with Hart and Wahlberg, Seal’s concert for the crew, working with a mountain lion, and the possibility of a sequel.

Moviefone: To begin with, how did you come up with the idea for this movie?

John Hamburg: One of our executive producers was telling me that he was alone without his family for the first time in a while. It’s a moment as simple as that that gets my mind going and thinking, “Oh, maybe that’s the premise for something.”

Then I put that idea aside for a few years, and then was playing around with this Huck character, Mark Wahlberg’s character, in a different story entirely. Suddenly I was like, “Oh, well maybe I can marry the early idea of someone who’s alone without their family, but reconnects with this Huck character,” and the rest of the story grew from there.

MF: How often does that happen that you’ll take something that is not working in one project, and apply it to another project?

JH: It does happen because it’s all part of a world of comedy, awkwardness and characters that I traffic in, so it definitely does. Sometimes I’ll hear a story and years later, put that into a project. Or I’ll put a project aside because I can’t quite crack it or it’s not quite working, but I’ll take elements of that and put it into something that does come to fruition.

MF: The movie is very much a “bromantic comedy,” can you talk about the deep friendship between Sonny and Huck?

JH: I’ve worked in the bromance space before, and I guess it’s one of my themes. They say filmmakers, sometimes you just make the same movie over and over again. They just look a little different. But I just wanted to tap into the idea that when you make different choices in life, it can pull people apart and really, you’re not as far apart as you think you are. How does this friendship that has been put through the test come back together?

Because I had experienced it in my own life, making choices to start a family and settle down in a way, and I had other family members and friends who have made an entirely different choice. Often, I’d think, “Oh, they’re doing something crazy right now, and I’m a little jealous.” But they might be like, “I’m jealous that John just gets to hang out at home and watch TV with his family.” So, it’s interesting. I was trying to tap into those dynamics in writing this relationship between Sonny and Huck.

MF: Can you talk about working with Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg, and their chemistry on and off screen?

JH: Kevin and I had worked with each other before, but never when he was the global movie star that he is now. I worked a bit on the script of his movie ‘Night School,’ but I wasn’t the director. Kevin is the funniest human on the planet and also just a great person. He’s fun to work with, brings so much energy, and has so much creativity.

Then Mark, I hadn’t known. We hadn’t worked together, so I didn’t know what he’d be like. He is, first of all, incredibly professional. He truly takes the craft of acting seriously. He knows the script cold, knows things that I’d cut from previous drafts and would bring them back in, and also just sneakily very funny. That combination is lethal. Then the two of them just got along incredibly well, which made my job as a director much easier.

MF: Can you also talk about Sonny and Maya’s marriage and how Sonny’s own insecurities really put his marriage and his family at risk?

JH: I was trying to write about a modern relationship. I observed so many of these where the wife was the breadwinner and had a big career, and the husband chose to stay at home, or maybe sometimes didn’t choose. Maybe it was like, “My wife is killing it, and someone’s got to take care of the kids.” So, I was aiming to write about that.

Then, I had seen some men in my life who made that choice and were completely at peace with it, but that wouldn’t give me a comedy. I’d seen other people who made that choice, but clearly were a little bit insecure and not quite sure. They’re falling into old-school gender dynamics, and I was trying to approach that.

Insecurity, to me, is one of the through lines in all of my comedies. A character who’s insecure is going to make a lot of bad choices. Thus, Kevin’s character is insecure, and he overcompensates. He does so many stupid things that come from that one thing, which is if he could just take a breath, relax and know he’s doing fine, everything would be fine. But of course, we wouldn’t have the movie ‘Me Time’ in that case.

MF: Mow did you get Seal to appear in the movie?

JH: So, I am a big Seal fan. I mean, he’s a great musician, and he has one of the great voices of all time. Kevin’s character was a singer-songwriter named Dr. Silk, and so it was like, “Who would this character have revered when he was coming up? Seal. That makes sense.”

Seal is so iconic, and so larger than life. I mean physically he’s a very tall, extremely handsome man. So, Kevin’s character would love this guy and he would be one of his idols. Then also, it would be really fun to have Seal, this larger-than-life figure, in Kevin’s suburban backyard. That was the combination.

Thankfully, we had a great conversation over the phone when he was on tour in England. I talked him through it, and he was down, and he was awesome. He was so great on the set. He was funny, and fun. When he was doing that concert, all the actors were just in awe. He stayed, and he did an acapella version of “Crazy” after the cameras stopped rolling just to entertain the crowd. It was one of my great days filming in my career.

MF: In the film, Sonny and Huck go on several adventures including skydiving and fighting a mountain lion. What was the most challenging sequence to shoot?

JH: Good question. The mountain lion was the most challenging because you have some real animals who don’t cooperate that well usually. You have a really hot, dusty location. A lot of it was CGI, and I hadn’t had a ton of experience doing this kind of sequence. So, I’m smart enough to know what I don’t know.

I relied on experts to tell me, “I know Kevin is wrestling with a blue stuffed animal. But this is going to look real. Trust us.” You have to have faith, put all these components together and hope that at the end it’s going to look seamless to the audience, and all they’ll see is Kevin Hart running from a mountain lion.

MF: Finally, can you see possibly revisiting these characters in the future and exploring their relationship further in a sequel?

JH: I do have a couple of ideas. They were so much fun to work with, and I do love the dynamics of this cast and these characters. There’s a couple of ideas percolating. You got to be careful with spinoff sequels. You have a reason to tell the story. But I do have a couple of thoughts that feel organic to the next choices these characters would make.

  • Movie Review: ‘Father Stu’

Opening in theaters on April 13th is the new movie ‘Father Stu,’ which marks the directorial debut of Rosalind Ross. Based on a true story, the film stars Mark Wahlberg as Stuart Long, a boxer-turned-actor who decides to become a priest and is then diagnosed with inclusion body myositis.

In addition to Wahlberg, the cast also includes Jacki Weaver, Mel Gibson, Malcolm McDowell, and Teresa Ruiz. The result is a surprisingly well-made and touching faith-based film, that never forces the faith on you, and is grounded by Mark Wahlberg’s strong and dedicated performance.

The movie begins by introducing us to Stu Long (Wahlberg), an over-the-hill boxer on the verge of retirement. Not sure what to do next, Stu moves to Hollywood to become an actor. While auditioning for projects, Stu gets a job working as a butcher, and soon meets Carmen (Ruiz). Smitten with her, he joins her church in hopes of getting to know her. However, Carmen makes it clear that she only dates Catholics. So, Stu decides to get baptized and join the church.

Stu and Carmen soon fall in love but are challenged when Stu has a terrible motorcycle accident. Stu believes that God saved his life, and in a surprising and difficult decision, he decides to become a priest. Neither Carmen, Stu’s mother Kathleen (Weaver), or his estranged father Bill (Gibson) understand his choice and all three try to convince Stu to change his mind.

He joins the seminary but soon discovers he has IDM, a rare muscle disease. Now, against the odds, Stu will have to his fight for his life while working towards his goal of serving God and becoming a priest.

Mark Wahlberg famously played a boxer once before in director David O. Russell’s brilliant ‘The Fighter,’ which was also based on a true story. While ‘Father Stu’ isn’t quite on the same level as ‘The Fighter,’ it was surprisingly good and an enjoyable watch.

Wahlberg is clearly dedicated to the role and transforms himself physically several times throughout the film. But his personality also fits the character of Stu perfectly. Stu is optimistic, charismatic, and a dreamer full of energy, boxes that Wahlberg’s persona all check. But the actor is also a devout Catholic and brings that reverence for the church to his performance.

‘Father Stu’ is a faith-based movie, but in many ways it’s the best kind of faith-based movie. My issue with faith-based movies in general is that the “faith” part always seems to come out of left field and is shoehorned into the main story. But with ‘Father Stu’ the “faith” is baked into the story and is necessary to the overall plot, so it never feels forced. The movie is about the “faith” that Stu eventually finds, first through Carmen, then through the church, and ultimately by reuniting with his estranged family after his illness.

Actress Teresa Ruiz gives a very good performance as Carmen and has great chemistry with Wahlberg. You can understand why Stu falls for her and goes to such great lengths for her love. As an audience, we begin to root for them as a couple, which is why it’s so devastating when Stu tells her he’s joining the seminary, and you can see the pain on Carmen’s face.

Actress Jacki Weaver seems to have a lock on playing worried mothers after her Oscar nominated roles in ‘Animal Kingdom’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’ and gives another strong performance as Stu’s concerned mom. Kathleen Long has a very close relationship to her son, having raised him herself, and you can see that clearly in Weaver’s scenes with Wahlberg as the two have a very playful on-screen chemistry.

Mel Gibson plays Bill Long, Stu’s estranged and abusive father. He’s not a likable character yet Gibson plays it well, adding humanity where he can in the form of remorse for his past actions. He has some strong scenes with Wahlberg, and you can see where Stu’s anger and rage comes from. The character also has a nice redemption arc, as seen in a tender moment with Weaver at the film’s conclusion.

Writer and director Rosalind Ross has delivered a strong debut film, however the movie is not without its faults. Some of the pacing is off, especially in the first half as it takes almost an hour before Stu even attends a church service. I understand that we need to set up the character and his life before Carmen and the church, but a lot of time was spent on his fledgling acting career, which didn’t seem important to the film and its overall themes.

In the end, ‘Father Stu’ works because of its inspiring true story and Mark Wahlberg’s strong performance. The themes of faith are respectfully explored, and the movie makes for touching and entertaining viewing.

‘Father Stu’ receives 3.5 out of 5 stars.
