The new movie will boast Emily Bader and Logan Lerman in the starring roles, and keeping it even more in the Netflix family, the movie will see Bader reunite with her ‘People We Meet on Vacation’ director Brett Haley.

Plus, in case you were worried she might not be involved, Garner is an executive producer on the new film.

The 2004 incarnation focused on Jenna Rink (Christa B. Allen), a 13-year-old girl who magically wakes up as her 30-year-old self and must navigate adulthood while rediscovering who she really is.

Garner played the grown-up version of the character, acting opposite the likes of Mark Ruffalo and Judy Greer.

Deadline’s report offers no details on how the new film might switch things up, if at all. But the new script comes from Hannah Marks with revisions by Flora Greeson.

‘Crime 101’ really wants to be Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ (and maybe some of his ‘Thief’ as well). Not that there’s anything wrong with that; epic crime thrillers are few and far between these days, and writer-director Bart Layton’s 140-minute L.A.-based drama has a lot of the scope and a glittering cast to make a run at it.

Based on gritty genre writer Don Winslow’s 2020 novella of the same name, ‘Crime 101’ doesn’t quite hit the heights of Mann’s 31-year-old masterpiece – it’s patterned almost too closely on that film’s narrative, for one thing, and it takes far too long to set itself up and finally get to the good stuff. But when it does work – thanks to some terrific work from some of that cast – ‘Crime 101’ can be suspenseful and absorbing.

A mysterious man named Davis (Chris Hemsworth) is committing a series of flawlessly executed heists – mainly of precious jewels — up and down the length of California’s 101 freeway, from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. Careful not to harm a single person during his crimes, Davis is also lonely, isolated, and socially awkward, with his only goal to reach a certain sum of money and his past shrouded in shadows.

While most of the LAPD squad assigned to the robberies just wants to close them out, Detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo) sees a pattern in them and is convinced it’s one man, annoying his superiors. His investigation brings him into the orbit of Sharon Coombs (Halle Berry), a claims adjuster whose insurance firm handles the kind of high-end clients who are taking a hit from Davis’ heists.

When Davis targets another of Coombs’ clients for what he hopes is his final job, that puts Coombs on his radar as well – but unbeknownst to Davis, his own benefactor (Nick Nolte) has put a second operator on the job, a psychotic, violent man-child named Ormon (Barry Keoghan) who does not share Davis’ moral code or any hesitation to hurt and kill.

‘Crime 101,’ as with Winslow’s other works and the films that Layton emulates, walks the well-worn gray area of many a crime film where the lines between the criminals and the ‘good guys’ are often blurry and where thieves often have codes of honor that are tested to the breaking point by other forces. But a problem here that hampers ‘Crime 101’ is that it never creates a consistently rising sense of tension for a good portion of the film. Setup takes up a large chunk of its first half, and the narrative finds itself going down more than one blind alley.

There is more attention paid to character development, but only selectively, and often in ways that seem incongruous. But the movie does come to life in fits and starts, including a pulse-pounding car and motorcycle chase involving Davis and Ormon, some other scenes involving the latter, and almost all of the third act, as Davis, Lubesnick, Ormon and others are all drawn into Davis’ carefully calibrated plan. Layton also makes good use of real Los Angeles locations, from downtown to Malibu, effectively making the city very much a character itself, although Blanck Mass’ heavy-handed score, all synths and thunderous drums, works too hard to add extra gravitas.

    Cast and Performances

Strangely enough, the weakest component of the all-star cast here may be its leading man. Hemsworth’s Davis is a curiously flat character – and while much of his background is intentionally left murky, there’s not enough for Hemsworth to work with, rendering him kind of a blank. Also unhelpful is his almost complete lack of chemistry with Berry and especially Monica Barbaro, who shows up in the Amy Brenneman role from ‘Heat’ – the love interest who changes the thief’s perspective – and brings her own considerable magnetism in spades, even in a typically underwritten and stock role.

Despite looking like he just came right from the ‘Task’ set to this film – his rumpled, exhausted cops are virtually indistinguishable – Mark Ruffalo brings his usual wounded dignity and innate decency to the role of Lou, who you can’t help but love thanks to his dogged determination and, uh, attempts at yoga (too bad Jennifer Jason Leigh is wasted completely and barely seen as his estranged wife).

The film’s MVPs, however, are Berry and Keoghan. The former is electric as a hard-working, quick-witted woman pushed to the brink by her obnoxious, sexist bosses, while the latter is genuinely frightening and unpredictable as the wild card psycho Ormon. Even though we’ve pretty much had enough Joker in recent Batman movies, Keoghan almost makes us want to see his cameoing Clown Prince of Crime from ‘The Batman’ show up again in Matt Reevesupcoming sequel.

    Final Thoughts

Bart Layton definitely gets an ‘A’ for effort with ‘Crime 101’ – he really wants to make the kind of complex, morally ambivalent, tense, adult-oriented thriller that is harder to glimpse at the multiplex these days than an influencer staying off their phone for the entire length of a movie.

Yet Layton makes his melodrama almost too complicated; careful pruning of some subplots and sequences – he apparently likes one slowly rotating opening shot of the title motorway so much that he does it again later in the film – might have jacked up the pace and added more urgency to the proceedings. Still, while ‘Crime 101’ is not the epic crime drama the director-writer may have had in mind, it still manages to generate enough heat of its own to keep one interested.

‘Crime 101’ receives a score of 70 out of 100.

Moviefone: To begin with, Chris, what would you say to audiences sitting down right now in a theater to watch this movie to prepare them for the theatrical experiences they are about to have?

Chris Hemsworth: Propulsive. Sophisticated. Relevant. Thought provoking. There’s a beautiful momentum in the film, and continuity from the action and the intensity there through the dramatic scenes. I think we’ve, and (director) Bart Layton speaks of this a lot, prioritized the action as the most important, impressive part. But the action means nothing if you’re not invested in those characters. Every time we cut to an action scene, right before that, you’re invested in the emotional content and then the interplay between the people that are about to collide. So, it’s fun.

MF: Halle, what would you say to moviegoers to get them excited for this film?

Halle Berry: Gritty. Sexy. Character driven. Action. We’ve got some chases you haven’t seen before. It’s a love letter to LA. You see it in a brand-new way. We haven’t seen the city like that in a very long time.

Halle Berry stars in 'Crime 101'. Photo Credit: Merrick Morton.

MF: Halle, can you expand on that? What do you mean by a “love letter to LA”?

HB: Well, because you see all of what the city encompasses. You see the glamour and the glitz, but you see the underbelly, you see the real. I think there is beauty in the real. Anything that’s real and true, I think people see beauty and truth in. He captured it in a beautiful way and the cinematography highlights it in the best way.

MF: Chris, you just used the word “Relevant” to describe the film. What did you mean by that?

CH: Well, we didn’t write the script, Bart Layton wrote the script. It’s based on a short story. He talks about wanting to have it entertaining, but if you could smuggle in questions that we’re asking ourselves about, I suppose “relevant” now being the system being unfair and people breaking out of the social expectations or what we’re being told is the good and what we’re being told is evil and provoking more of the conversation around the ambiguity of things, the humanity in all of us, and how whatever side of the fence you may sit on, you’re going to find good and bad people. It’s not as clean cut as like, “Well, you’re from there. That means I can put you in that box.” It’s a lot more, open for discussion. The tropes that maybe you walk into a film and expect within these characters, I do feel we break out of those and there’s some unexpected turns. I think when I watch those movies, it certainly provokes a second discussion with yourself around, “Oh, I’ve met people like that and I assumed that in a second, and how wrong I was.” They’re going through something; they’re doing their best. Nothing’s as simple as we’d like to think.

MF: Halle, how would you describe your character in your own words and how she connects to Chris’ character?

HB: Well, I think what we discovered about our characters, they both come from meager beginnings, right? That connected us as characters in the movie. But my character has worked hard as a woman of color to get where she got to in her insurance company. Rightfully so, she’s expecting the rightful promotion and the rightful place within that system. She gets painfully made aware that she has aged out and that and she’s no longer useful. That is the moment that I think she feared, always knew could come, but somehow thought she was different and realized she’s not. So, she got presented with a moral question about what will you do when you realize the system is unfair? How will you mitigate that? And she makes a choice.

MF: Chris, how would you describe your character and why he teams up with Halle’s character?

CH: There’s this crisis of identity, I think. I’m not going to speak for her, but with my character, what he thought was going to bring fulfillment and happiness, it was material wealth. He literally has a number of which if he gets to that number, it’ll solve all his problems. There’s this beautiful line that her character says, “Those who come from chaos, crave order.” I think that speaks volumes with many people’s experiences, especially if you’re in your formative years and there’s abuse and neglect and you don’t have that foundation to fall back upon. You seek it in all the wrong places, or you attempt to build structure and safety through outside acknowledgement or status or material wealth. We all know that that doesn’t hold true. What is important and what they need is love, connection, support, and to be seen by people who also have had similar experiences. That’s a true connection that they are both seeking.

Chris Hemsworth stars in 'Crime 101'. Photo Credit: Dean Rogers.
Chris Hemsworth stars in ‘Crime 101’. Photo Credit: Dean Rogers.

MF: Finally, Chris, obviously you grew up differently than your character but how did you tap into his intensity for this film?

CH: I mean, I grew up in a beautiful household, but we had very little money and were certainly aware of the financial burden my parents were under. It was week to week paychecks to pay for food and bills. I’d see and feel the stress that was on them. I literally was like, “Oh, I could become an actor and I could pay the house off finally.” I remember asking my dad, “When will you pay it off?” He was like, “Oh, never mate.” My dad worked as a social worker in child protection and was doing one of the most important jobs, protecting those who were the most vulnerable of us, that being children. Yet, he was tied to the bank in that way and was never going to escape it. So, I empathized or connected with the idea of that financial burden, if I could solve that thing, that will fix it. Then I did that, and then you arrive at an existential crisis of, “Well, now what?” It brings you happiness for a period, but then it’s about something else. Then you go into your second mountain of life. It’s like there’s something deeper, there’s some other burning inner desire. Your psyche stops speaking up, and your soul wants something else. None of that I have answered yet, but it’s been around my brain a lot in the recent times.

When he sets his sights on the ultimate score, his plans intersect with those of insurance broker Sharon Colvin (Halle Berry). A detective named Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo) believes he has cracked Mike’s pattern and is determined to bring him down before the next job.

Moviefone: To begin with, as a filmmaker, can you talk about the challenges of joining a successful series to direct the third installment of a franchise?

Ruben Fleisher: I approach this movie as a fan of the franchise. I love the first two movies. So, for me, the pressure of trying to make it as good as the previous two was so much self-imposed because I didn’t want to disappoint my fellow fans of the franchise. So, I did everything in my power to carry on the spirit of the original and clean up some of the things that happened in the past. For example, Henley (Isla Fisher) was in the first movie and then was replaced by Lulu (Lizzy Caplan) without much explanation. So, it was important to me that both be in the film, just because as a fan, I wanted to see those two women together, because they’re both so great. So, just carrying forward all the magic, all the fun, the banter, the relationships and everything else. So, the big challenge was just feeling the pressure not to disappoint fans.

MF: Did it help that you already had a good working relationship with Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson from making the ‘Zombieland’ movies?

RF: I was lucky because I had a pre-existing relationship with Woody and Jesse, so I had a familiarity and a comfort level and that’s what drew me to the project in the first place. I was lucky to have the help of two longtime collaborators to make sure that we did our best work. This was my fourth movie with each of them. We all did the two ‘Zombieland’ movies together and then Jesse and I did ‘30 minutes or Less’ and Woody was in the tease at the end of ‘Venom’. But I love working with those two guys, and I also knew that they loved working with the rest of the cast. I was a huge fan of Dave Franco, Isla Fisher and Lizzie Caplan. So, for me, it was just an opportunity to work with more actors that I really love, but I had also heard from Jesse and Woody about what a great dynamic everybody had on set and how they felt like a family among themselves. So, I was just happy to join the family.

MF: Actress Rosmund Pike gives a fantastic performance in the movie. Can you talk about casting and working with her?

RF: I have been a fan of hers for a long time. I mean, she’s so good going back to ‘Die Another Day’ or ‘Gone Girl’, but it was really seeing her recently in ‘Saltburn’, where I felt like she just stole every scene that she was in, and she was so funny. In addition to being a challenging character, I think movies to a degree are only as good as the villains. You need someone formidable, and especially when you have such a strong ensemble as we have, with such incredible actors, you need someone who feels equally weighted in terms of screen presence, threat, charisma and everything that makes a great movie character. So, Rosamund’s somebody who, beyond her dramatic ability, beyond her obvious beauty, she just tends to make her characters delicious and more than what’s expected. So, it was exciting for me to. She brought so much to it. She has an incredible, natural aptitude for accents, and the South African accent is very specific and challenging. I’m so proud of the fact that when South Africans have watched the movie, and I’ve talked to them about it, they have told me they’ve never heard a non-South African have such a perfect accent as that. So that was really gratifying to learn. But she’s just got this inherent intelligence. She seems like she’s from this lofted heiress status, and she seems smart and like she could be dangerous or somebody not to mess with. So, it was a great experience from beginning to end working with her.

MF: Can you talk about bringing in new cast members like Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa and Ariana Greenblatt and having them mix it up with the returning cast?

RF: That was also a great challenge just because when you have such beloved, established actors, and you got to find, younger, less established actors who you expect to be as compelling and charismatic, so they just don’t get completely blown away by these movie stars. It’s challenging, but for all three of them, I had been fans of their work. With Dominic, ‘The Holdovers’ was his first movie, but he was so compelling in it. I think it was an incredible launch for his career. But I was proud to have cast him in his first ever studio movie, and I think he more than performed at a level we needed in terms of just being funny and he turned out to be good with both the magic and the action. He’s just got this cool kind of swag. Justice is somebody who we’ve all seen whether it’s ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ or the ‘Jurassic World’ movies, but also super cool indies as well. He’s always interesting and so I’ve been a fan, and it was exciting to get to cast him. Then Ariana was just a force of nature. She was 16 when she first came to Budapest and celebrated her 17th birthday while we were there. So, she was literally a child relative to these adults, and she’s just so wise beyond her years, so capable physically, obviously a great actress and just really brought so much cool to June that she just inherently has as a person. Casting’s one of my favorite parts of the process and I think if you look at the original ‘Zombieland’ or other movies I made, casting seems to be a signature of the films just discovering people who have gone on to great things. Not to say I discovered these people, but just giving them maybe perhaps a bigger platform. I think they all have exceeded beyond my wildest hopes and dreams, and I think they’re just so compelling as a triad.

MF: Can you talk about designing the illusions for the film and how you wanted them to look on screen?

RF: The first two movies are terrific, and I love them, but there were moments as a fan where I felt like they relied perhaps a little too heavily on VFX or CGI. So, it was very important to me for our movie that we do everything as practical as possible and do everything as much in cameras as possible. One of the things I’m most proud of is that all those illusion rooms that take place in the château are all physical sets that we built. So, whether it was the upside-down room where we literally spun a room upside down, which is a Hollywood convention going back to Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling. Or it’s the Ames room, which we probably all seen versions of in various museums of Illusion throughout the world, where one person’s very big and one person’s very small on the other side of frame. We built that, and that was all in camera and practical, and that was just so cool to experience when you walk to that room. It really did look like a normal room and then as soon as you walk in, the proportions shift. So, that was just neat and to be able to create something like that with that level of detail. The infinity staircase, which is what we call the room that Woody was in with all the mirrors going in a million different directions. I talked to the production designer about trying to figure out how we could do a practical version of M.C. Escher’s painting, where the stairs are going in all different directions and you’re not quite sure what’s up and down or anything else. So, through a trial and error, we arrived at the design for that room, which kind of does provide that feeling of you don’t know which way is up or down and you don’t know which reflections are real and which is Woody. Then there was a hall of mirrors, which we’ve seen in movies before, but that was all in camera. Truthfully, the only VFX effects in any of these environments was just when there were mirrors. We had to paint out the camera because he inherently shot his own reflection, but we put him in a skintight form fitting blue screen suit. So, it was easy to find him in all the reflections, and then we could just erase him. But I’m proud of how we committed to this concept of it having to be as practical as we could make it, and then holding true to it, and not ultimately bailing or relying on VFX, which is always a possibility.

MF: Finally, the ending of the film hints at more adventures for the main characters, is returning for a ‘’Now You See Me 4’ something you would be interested in doing?

RF: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, that’s why we left it off on that ellipsis of more potential adventures to go on. I’m thrilled with the reaction that the audience has had to the film, and I’d be absolutely thrilled to go back into this world with these actors and devise a new magical adventure for them to go on. So, fingers crossed.

    • The movie’s release date is not affected.

It’s the sort of incident to generate a “Web-Slinging Menace Comes To A Sticky End” headlines on the front page of the Daily Bugle and for J. Jonah Jameson to hope the “vigilante” had some sense knocked into him.

But yes, Spidey, AKA Peter Parker, or rather Tom Holland, the actor who plays him in the MCU, has suffered a mild concussion after a stunt went wrong on the Pinewood, England set of new outing ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.

According to Deadline’s reporting on the accident, Holland was performing a stunt and had a fall. He was taken to a local hospital and examined but not admitted, with instructions to rest and recuperate.

Since the movie’s shooting schedule included a lot with Holland (naturally), director Destin Daniel Cretton and the Marvel team have opted to shut down shooting for a week to let the actor get better.

Given that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ changed things in a huge way for Holland’s Peter–– as you’ll likely recall, it ended with a spell that wiped everyone’s memory of him so as to protect the people he loves –– the storyline going forward is naturally something of a mystery.

We do at least know that Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who contributed to or wrote the previous three Spider-outings, are back on board for this one.

Even with Peter’s changed situation, the likes of MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) are still likely to return.

Yet with ‘Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink’s casting earlier this year, that throws an interesting wrinkle in –– what if the plan is for MJ and Ned to have smaller roles while a new supporting cast rises to importance in Peter’s life?

Sink’s role being kept under wraps, and the studio will look to have it that way as long as possible.

Elsewhere, ‘The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas has also scored a role in the movie, but her character is also a mystery for now.

Jon Bernthal will be showing up as Frank Castle/The Punisher, after most recently being seen in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.

Mark Ruffalo is back as the Hulk –– we’d guess in his Smart Hulk persona, which blends Bruce Banner with the Big Green Guy.

Finally, Michael Mando, the ‘Better Call Saul’ actor who cropped up in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ as Mac Gargan, the civilian version of Spidey villain Scorpion is also back, so he’ll presumably be causing problems.

When will ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ be in theaters?

While you might think a production pause could have a knock-on effect to the movie’s release, we’re told that’s not the case and it’s on track to still arrive on July 31st, 2026.

‘Mickey 17’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters on March 7th, ‘Mickey 17’ is Korean director Bong Joon Ho’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning 2019 movie ‘Parasite.’

Yet if you were to pick a film that feels more in the mode of his latest effort, ‘Mickey 17’ is more along the lines of his dystopian pic ‘Snowpiercer,’ given its futuristic setting and examination of imbalances in society between the haves and have-nots.

When you have the reputation of a Bong Joon Ho, the pressure is naturally on to follow what has come before. The Korean filmmaker certainly has his obsessions, and here he’s expressing them once again through science fiction satire.

If you were to compare this to anything outside of his canon, it would probably be the work of Terry Gilliam, who himself played well in the arena of satire blended with dystopia. Yet given the Oscar-winning status of ‘Parasite,’ this feels like a more minor effort from the director.

Bong here is adapting the 2022 novel ‘Mickey7’ by Edward Ashton, taking the basic concept of an “expendable” worker aboard a spaceship (and later on the icy colony world of Niflheim) who has essentially signed up for lethal duties and to be printed out each time as a copy of himself.

Complications arise when Mickey –– the 17th “copy” as per the title of the movie –– survives his latest, seemingly fatal mission and returns to his colony ship, only to discover that the 18th copy has already been printed and the current version isn’t exactly thrilled to be sharing resources or the affections of the woman Mickey has come to love, Naomi Ackie’s Nasha Barridge.

This is Bong in full quirk mode, much as he was in ‘Snowpiercer,’ looking to blend comedy with social issues and poking fun at the corrupt excesses of those in charge (in this case, Mark Ruffalo’s Kenneth Marshall, a failed politician-turned-spiritual leader and businessman who is sponsoring the mission and bears distinct tonal resemblance to a certain current occupant of high political office.

The issue with ‘Mickey 17’ is that it’s often tonally confused, trying to blend its message with the wacky weirdness surrounding its title character’s existence. It doesn’t always gel that naturally, and Bong as both writer and director could have benefitted from tighter editing, the movie sometimes drifting off on tangents that add little to either the humor or the points that he’s trying to make.

Stylistically, it’s certainly committed to an offbeat blend of corporate soullessness and the organic side of the planet where the colonists end up. And the movie also lets montage do a lot of heavy lifting here, filling in a lot of information in a short time.

    Cast and Performances

The movie’s focus is, of course, on the various Mickeys, all played by Robert Pattinson (albeit mostly as the 17th and 18th incarnations). Despite being genetic copies, each Mickey is subtly different –– the 18th, for example, is pushier than the 17th.

In general, though, Pattinson gives them all an appealing sad-sack quality in a mostly vanity-fee performance that is always watchable. The actor has been doing compelling work for years, signing up to collaborate with interesting filmmakers and Bong is no exception.

Still, there are times when Mickey as a character comes across as more a collection of ticks than he does a man –– though that’s more down to the script than Pattinson’s acting.

Mark Ruffalo is clearly having fun playing Kenneth Marshall, the preening, dumb leader of the colony ship whose only thought is how he’ll look good to those around him. It’s a fine, funny performance, though poor Toni Collette is left with much less to do as his wife, Ylfa –– aside from a couple of standout moments, she feels largely wasted.

Much more impactful is Naomi Ackie, no stranger to space-borne genre work after ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘. She takes full advantage of playing security agent Nasha, who is a badass with a soft side that finds romance with Mickey. She gets plenty to do in the movie, and makes the most of it.

Around the central characters are a fun bunch of supporting types, including Steven Yeun as Mickey’s sleazy childhood friend Timo, who is only too quick to let him down. Credit also to the likes of Patsy Ferran as friendly scientist Dorothy and Tim Key, who has a small but memorable role as a Marshall obsessive who ends up dressed as a pigeon to support one of his odd pronouncements.

    Final Thoughts

This won’t make the top three of Bong’s best movies, but it certainly still has its charms. Sci-fi satire is a tough genre to pull off, and here he delivers something that, if it sometimes feels like a poorer copy of this other work, is worth seeing.

What’s the plot of ‘Mickey 17’?

Adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel ‘Mickey7’, the new movie stars Robert Pattinson as an “expendable” –– a disposable crew member on a space mission, selected for dangerous tasks because he can be renewed if his body dies, with his memories largely intact.

With one regeneration, though, things go very wrong…

    Preview:

    • John Malkovich and Mark Ruffalo are boarding Martin McDonagh’s new movie.
    • ‘Wild Horse Nine’ also has Sam Rockwell and Parker Posey starring.
    • The plot is being kept under wraps.

It’s not hard to see why actors flock to work with British-Irish playwright-turned-screenwriter/director Martin McDonagh.

His work has attracted acclaim and awards on stages and screens, and he himself has an Oscar under his belt for live action short ‘Six Shooter.’

Beyond that, several of those who have starred in his films, including ‘In Bruges,’ ‘Seven Psychopaths,’ ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ and 2022’s ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ have either been nominated for, or won, their own Oscars.

One of those to actually take the stage is Sam Rockwell, who won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for ‘Three Billboards,’ has boarded McDonagh’s latest, ‘Wild Horse Nine.’

And he’s not alone. While Rockwell would be making his third appearance in a McDonagh movie (he also starred in ‘Seven Psychopaths’), the director is also recruiting some new faces (well, to him): John Malkovich, Mark Ruffalo and Parker Posey.

Deadline brings word of Malkovich and Ruffalo, while Variety reports on Posey.

This actually isn’t the first incarnation of the project, though: it originally launched at the American Film Market in 2021, where Searchlight Pictures (which also worked with the director on ‘Three Billboards’ and ‘Banshees’) picked up the rights to the prestige movie with Rockwell attached to star alongside Oscar Isaac and Christopher Walken.

Isaac and Walken have since moved on, mostly due to scheduling we assume.

What’s the story of ‘Wild Horse Nine’?

As with most of McDonagh’s previous movies, the exact plotline is being kept quiet for now. We’d guess that it’ll be his usual blend of quirky characters, smart comedy and memorable emotional turns.

But what we do know is that production kicks off in March in Rapa Nui, the indigenous name for Easter Island, a protected Chilean wildlife area 3,700 kilometers off the country’s coast known for its unrivalled cultural landscape and for being the most remote inhabited island on Earth.

The Rapa Nui National Park continues to maintain a high degree of authenticity, having had minimal intervention since the area’s near-abandonment in the late 19th century.

You just know, then, that the production will have to tiptoe carefully around the area. You hear that, Rockwell? No legendary dancing near the statues!

What else has John Malkovich been working on?

Malkovich will be seen as an oddball, charismatic pop star-turned-cult leader in A24 movie ‘Opus,’ which will be in theaters this coming March and co-stars Ayo Edebiri.

He’s also drawing attention for his brief appearance in the new teaser trailer for Marvel’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps.’ His role is under wraps, but the fan theories are coming thick and fast.

In addition to those, he’s part of the cast for action adventure comedy ‘Sacrifice,’ crime mystery ‘In the Hand of Dante’ and animated pic ‘A Winter’s Journey.’

Ruffalo, who was last seen in ‘Poor Things’ (where he scored a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination) next has Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi satire ‘Mickey 17,’ featuring Robert Pattinson as a cloned worker in space, due to hit theaters in March.

He’s playing an FBI agent in upcoming Max series ‘Task’ and will reprise his role as Dylan Rhodes in ‘Now You See Me 3.’

What does Sam Rockwell have going on?

Rockwell returned to voice reformed criminal Mr. Wolf in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Bad Guys’ spin-off short ‘Little Lies and Alibis,’ which played before ‘Dog Man’ in theaters.

And that was just a prelude to ‘The Bad Guys’ sequel, which lands in August this year.

Also on the animated front, he’ll be heard as the main character in ‘The Adventures of Drunky,’ and has a role in Gore Verbinski’s new action comedy ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die,’ in which A man claiming to be from the future arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit the precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.

The actor also has a variety of other roles in development, including a Merle Haggard biopic and action comedy ‘The Heart.’

What is Parker Posey up to?

Posey’s next role will be on the small screen rather than in theaters, as she’s part of the cast for Season 3 of ‘The White Lotus,’ which starts on HBO on February 16th.

Movie-wise, she’s worked on ‘The Parenting,’ a new horror comedy about a family renting a countryside house for a vacation, only to discover a poltergeist haunting the place.

When will ‘Wild Horse Nine’ be in theaters?

Searchlight Pictures has yet to reveal a release date for the new movie, and McDonagh is not a director to be rushed. But chances are it could end up in awards contention either this year or next.
