‘Freakier Friday’ receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters on August 8th is ‘Freakier Friday’, which picks up the story of Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) 22 years after the mother and daughter duo swapped bodies and learned life lessons.

Directed this time by Nisha Ganatra (‘Late Night’) the cast also includes the returning likes of Mark Harmon (‘NCIS’) and Chad Michael Murray (‘One Tree Hill’) alongside franchise newcomers Julia Butters (‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’) and Sophia Hammons (‘Up Here’).

Legacy sequels and comedy; two examples of filmmaking that are hard to get right. You have studios looking to exploit classic IP –– in this case, 2003’s lightweight but fun Lindsay Lohan/Jamie Lee Curtis body swap comedy ‘Freaky Friday’ (itself a remake, let’s not forget) –– but in the transition to a more up-to-date story with the core cast intact, something can often be lost.

It’s a relief to report, then, that in this case, that ‘Freakier Friday’, which returns Curtis and Lohan (plus a few other welcome characters from the first film), surrounds them with entertaining newer talent and manages to capture the spirit without feeling like a rip-off.

    Script and Direction

Jordan Weiss has the screenplay credit here, with Elyse Hollander scoring a “story by” listing, evidence of the film going through a few script drafts on its journey to the screen.

But despite the development process, what has emerged still feels fresh and funny, warm and emotional, riffing on the basic body swap concept, and borrowing some elements (such as an impending wedding and tension between teens and mothers –– or grandmother).

Like the old wedding tradition states, something old, something new, something borrowed and while “something blue” only really counts for the denim outfit Curtis’ character dons while occupied by someone else, it all serves to move the story forward while keeping the laughs coming.

The connection between Lohan and Curtis remains strong, and the script finds ways to update their relationship while keeping them as familiar characters. The new additions, meanwhile, including Anna Coleman’s (Lohan) actual child (Butters) and future step-daughter (Hammons), are worthwhile.

Director Nisha Ganatra, meanwhile, keeps it all ticking along well, making good use of Los Angeles locations to have the film feel like it truly takes place in the universe of the 2003 original.

She also represents a welcome move towards diversity, something that occurs here both in front of and behind the camera.

    Cast and Performances

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan both seemed eager to return to their roles, and from the looks of the movie itself (and the blooper reel at the end), they clearly had a lot of fun catching up with the characters of Tess and Anna Coleman.

With the movie quickly and smoothly briefing us on how their relationship has evolved now Anna is a mother of her own (and has found love with Manny Jacinto’s Eric), it soon gets down to taking us through a familiar story that goes in interesting new directions.

The two actors are more than ready to throw themselves into the physical comedy and also hit the emotional beats when needed.

Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons carry the other end of the heavy lifting as the warring future siblings who are both unhappy with Anna and Eric’s marriage plans (and a potential move to London). The two actors really make the characters’ issues believable, and are just as adept when it comes to the funny moments.

Jacinto meanwhile, is a funny performer who is here saddled a little with too straightforward a role (and a British accent that doesn’t really suit him). Yet he’s still adept at hunky love interest and confused suitor.

‘Freakier Friday’ also brings back some other legacy characters –– Chad Michael Murray as Jake, Anna’s old flame, gets the meatiest role, and still carries his other torch, for Tess. And it’s always good to see perennial character actor Stephen Tobolowsky show up, here reprising frustrated teacher Mr. Bates from the original.

In new supporting roles, the likes of X Mayo (as the principal of Harper and Lily’s school) and especially Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (star of Netflix comedy ‘Never Have I Ever’, who here plays an overly emotional pop star) really make an impact.

‘Freakier Friday’ is a sequel that doesn’t embarrass the original, has callbacks that work as more than simply fan service and should bring a smile to different generations.

It’s also that welcome comedy that is actually funny and makes good use of its cast.

    • The story takes place years after the 2003 original.

After years of talk about the possibility, we learned in April that Disney was officially making a sequel to 2003’s body swap comedy ‘Freaky Friday’, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and daughter who are dealing with drama in their lives and magically end up in each other’s bodies, learning to appreciate the other’s point of view and struggles along the way.

Things have moved on apace with the studio publishing the first photograph of Curtis and Lohan behind the scenes as production began on the sequel, which will see a number of actors returning alongside them from the original and a new crop of young performers joining the cast.

The ‘Freaky’ phenomenon all started with a book. In this case, it’s the 1972 tome by Mary Rogers, which sees a mother and her daughter swapping bodies.

It was first adapted into a movie that hit theaters in 1976, starring Barbara Harris as the mother and Jodie Foster as the daughter.

The 2003 version, directed by Mark Waters, had Curtis and Lohan as the latest iteration, playing Tess and Anna Coleman. Like its predecessor, it tried to bring the core concept of living life in another person’s shoes into modern settings.

  • Report: Mark Harmon’s Out-of-Control Dog Led to Pauley Perrette’s ‘NCIS’ Exit

Pauley Perrette, Mark Harmon“NCIS” fans were concerned when Pauley Perrette tweeted about “multiple physical assaults” on the set as the reason for her leaving the series after 15 years, especially when the actress didn’t provide any more details.

Now, The Wrap reports that she was referring to a 2016 incident on set where Mark Harmon‘s dog attacked a member of the crew, who required 15 stitches. Several sources told The Wrap that Perrette objected when the dog was allowed to return to the set afterward.

The tension between Harmon and Paulette became so great, they weren’t even sharing scenes, as many fans had noted. “She did her scenes on one day and he did his work on other days…” one insider said. “It was simply scheduled that they did not work the same days.” (CBS declined to comment.)

Harmon’s attorney, Barry Axelrod, confirmed to The Wrap that he consulted with Harmon about the potential liability of the dog returning to the “NCIS” set after the bite. And that there was something called a “one free bite rule,” where the owner cannot be held liable for a first offense.

Axelrod claimed that the dog did not return to the set, but an anonymous source says that Harmon did bring his dog back, although it was on leash. According to The Wrap, no one set felt free to confront Harmon, an executive producer, about his dog.

Perrette has long been involved in animal rescue and would share photos of “NCIS rescue dogs” on social media.

Her character, Abby, was also a dog lover, even going so far in one case as to break protocol to prove that a German Shepherd was not responsible for mauling a man to death.

And, after “NCIS,” she continues to rescue dogs.

  • Mario Bello Joins ‘NCIS’ as ‘Mischievous’ Agent Who Challenges Gibbs

The 32nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival - Montecito Award: Isabelle HuppertGibbs (Mark Harmon) may meet his match in “NCIS” Season 15.

CBS just announced that Maria Bello will join the show as a series regular. She’ll arrive in Episode 4, playing an as-yet unnamed agent. Here’s more on the character, from the network:

“[She] was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the army and served two tours in Afghanistan. After joining NCIS, she built her reputation as the agency’s premier forensic psychologist. Unlike the other agents, she can second guess and challenge Gibbs, so there will be friction but also mutual respect. She is a positive force, mischievous and at times acerbic.”

So she’s not a villain or adversary, just someone in a position to give Gibbs crap in a cheeky, fun way.

NCIS executive producers George Schenck and Frank Cardea also shared a statement on the casting:

“We have always been big fans of Maria Bello’s work and are excited to be introducing her as an agent who not only has a distinct talent, but also a unique relationship with Gibbs.”

In June, it was revealed that Jennifer Esposito will be leaving “NCIS” after one season as a series regular.

“NCIS” Season 15 premieres Tuesday, September 26 on CBS.

“It was a great experience. I could not have asked for a better opportunity than to work with the NCIS cast and producers.”

Her character, NCIS Special Agent Alexandra “Alex” Quinn, was conceived by former showrunner Gary Glasberg not long before his death, Deadline reported, and the site said “NCIS” plans to go in a new creative direction in Season 15.

When Season 14 premiered in September 2016, Esposito joined Duane Henry and Wilmer Valderrama as new series regulars, replacing OG star Michael Weatherly, who left after Season 13.

In the Season 14 finale, Alex Quinn took two unexplained phone calls from her mother; it’s possible those calls will be involved in her exit from Gibbs’s (Mark Harmon) team.

Deadline noted that Esposito is continuing her recurring role on “The Affair” and will be seen opposite John Travolta in the feature film “Speed Kills.”

“NCIS” Season 15 is scheduled to premiere Tuesday, September 26 on CBS.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Howard Stern Kisses Letterman Goodbye

    Howard Stern Kisses Letterman Goodbye
    YouTube

On Monday night, Howard Stern was Dave’s guest. Howard asked about Jay Leno, to see if he would be on Dave’s final show. It sounds like Letterman’s team asked Jay and Jay said no. Dave said Jay asked him to be on his own show for the final episode, and Dave said it was a lovely offer but he thought the show should be more about Jay. Dave thinks Jay now feels the same way about Dave’s final show.

Dave also showed an embarrassing old photo of Howard, and Stern told a story about previously going on Dave’s show and getting no response – even his own parents and listeners didn’t see it. “Thank God it’s over.” Dave and Howard also discussed their best guests ever. Good talk. In the second video, Howard – showboating through the whole interview – stood up to share his disappointment that Dave was going out to dinner with Don Rickles after the show, and they didn’t invite Howard. Then Howard brought Dave out in the open stage and basically groped him to try and get a kiss goodbye. “Kiss me! Kiss me now!” Sexual harassment!

“Conan” had an interesting Monday. Jean-Claude Van Damme – aka The Muscles From Brussels — recreated his “Kickboxer” dance scene. He also said there will be a “Kickboxer 2.”

Also on “Conan,” “The Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev talked about her Instagrammed cross-country road trip (she’s in the middle of it and just paused to fly out and do this show) and did some splits with Conan O’Brien.

Charlize Theron was on “The Tonight Show” and she and Jimmy Fallon chose each other’s outfits and gave each other characters to play. It was weird. Jimmy couldn’t figure out whether he was meant to be a man or a woman. (Charlize said he was a woman, and even named her.) Charlize had a potty mouth and had to be bleeped at one point. Late in the video, they went over to join the Roots and Charlize pretended to play guitar. If they weren’t high through this, they should probably say they were anyway. Dumb.

Louis C.K. was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and Louis talked about how he wrote for “Late Night” when Conan O’Brien was the host. Louis and another writer slipped in a joke about Conan getting a pearl necklace. It’s not a great joke even if you get it.

This Sunday is the final episode of “Mad Men” and Seth did a great video on the “Mad Men” previews that tell you NOTHING about the next episode. Here’s “The Best of ‘Next Week on Mad Men.’” This is an accurate representation of what they’re like.

Mark Harmon and Zoe McLellan were on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and James pushed Mark for spoilers on who will be killed off “NCIS.”
