  • Twitter Finds Marisa Tomei Too Hot as Aunt May in ‘Spider-Man’

In the era of MILFs and glam-mas, there appears to be no room left for too-hot-aunts, according to some “Spider-Man” fan boys who are crying foul over Marisa Tomei being cast as Aunt May in the forthcoming reboot.

A torrent of comment is flooding Twitter with complaints after reports the 50-year-old may star opposite the new webslinger, Tom Holland, 19, as his widowed aunt.

Another made the inevitable comparison to the first movie Aunt May, played by Rosemary Harris, who is 37 years Tomei’s senior.

Marvel purists argue that Aunt May has typically been portrayed as a graying, wrinkled dowager. In the character’s first appearance in creator Stan Lee’s 1962 comic book, Peter Parker’s overprotective Aunt May looked more like the perfect pitchwoman for Depend and Polident—wrinkled, frail, white hair pulled back into a tight bun and a cameo brooch around her neck.

The illustrated figure was brought to life by Harris in 2002’s “Spider-Man” starring Tobey Maguire when she was then 74, and in the franchise’s second reincarnation, Sally Field was 66 when she first played the part in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” with Andrew Garfield.

  • Marisa Tomei Might Be the New Aunt May in ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

    2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards - ArrivalsWith a brand-new Spider-Man comes a brand-new Aunt May.

Variety reports that Sony and Marvel are in final negotiations with Oscar winner Marisa Tomei to play aunt to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. The deal is not done, nor are the details confirmed, but should Tomei sign on, she’d star in the first standalone “Spider-Man” movie due in 2017.

Holland will make his first appearance as the web slinger in “Captain America: Civil War,” which hits theaters next May.

Aunt May has always been a key character in Spider-Man lore. She and Uncle Ben are Peter’s guardians, though she becomes his sole parental figure after Ben’s death. In the “Amazing Spider-Man” movies, starring Andrew Garfield, Aunt May was played by Sally Field.

Tomei, who is 50, is the youngest actress to play Aunt May, but Sony and Marvel deliberately chose a much younger actor in Holland as Spider-Man. The rumor mill indicates that the companies, which are collaborating on the project, wanted to write a high school-set storyline for the next movie in the franchise.

  • Hugh Grant’s ‘The Rewrite’ Release Date and Photos Revealed (EXCLUSIVE)

    %Slideshow-259847%
If there’s one certifiable kingpin of the romantic comedy genre, it’s probably Hugh Grant, whose affable nervousness and pretty boy good looks have been an intrinsic part of the genre for the past few decades. (Last year, in the terrific comedy “The Trip to Italy,” a philandering husband used a Hugh Grant impression to hit on a woman he wanted to sleep with. Even the dastardliest deeds sound positively charming when given that Hugh Grant sheen.) And one of Grant’s chief collaborators over the years has been writer/director Marc Lawrence, who shepherded Grant through “Two Weeks Notice,” the very underrated “Music and Lyrics,” and “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” Their latest comedy, “The Rewrite,” premiered last year at the Shanghai International Film Festival, but since so few of us had time to swing by the Shanghai International Film Festival, you should be pleased to know that it’s getting a domestic release date — and we can exclusively reveal when.

“The Rewrite,” which stars Grant as a failed Hollywood screenwriter who takes up a teaching position at a small college and promptly falls in love with a gorgeous single mother taking his class (Marisa Tomei), will debut in American theaters on February 13th. That’s right folks — a Hugh Grant romantic comedy debuting on Valentine’s Day. Could it get any better?

Oh wait, it does: the cast includes Bella Heathcote, Allison Janney, Chris Elliott, and future Oscar winner (trust us on that one) J.K. Simmons.

So again, “The Rewrite” will be coming out on February 13th. And you know where to get tickets and everything else “Rewrite”-related, right? Yep. Moviefone.
