  • ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Star Teases Movie’s ‘Beautiful,’ ‘Unique’ New Songs

Why is March 17, 2017 so far away? That’s how long we have to wait for Bill Condon‘s live-action “Beauty and the Beast,” starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, and we’re even more excited and impatient after hearing new teases from Luke Evans. No one hypes like Gaston, and he did his movie proud in a video interview with Collider. It’s clear he adores Josh Gadhis bromance buddy who plays LeFou to his own Gaston — and he said they both sang live on set, in addition to being pre-recorded along with the rest of the cast.

Speaking of music, Luke also talked about the movie’s two new songs from Alan Menken and Tim Rice, which will join the original Disney songs. Apparently fans should prepare for some instant classics — to be sung over and over again for years.

    Here’s how Luke put it:

I’m lucky enough to be one of the first people in the world to hear those two songs, which will become songs that children will sing, adults will sing, people in musicals will end up singing them at some point, they’ll become audition piece, they will become part of this amazing legacy of a film we already have, a story that is so ingrained in our — in my childhood memory. And these two songs, they’re beautiful, they complement everything so well, but they are incredibly unique and different. And the thought and love that has gone into those two songs honor the work of the original so well. It will be a nice thing, especially for the fans, to hear these two new songs on top of the beautiful stuff we already have. It’s going to be great.”

  • First ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Footage Stuns at D23 (But Fans Will Have to Wait to See It)

British Fashion Awards - Red Carpet ArrivalsThe first footage from Disney’s upcoming live-action reboot of “Beauty and the Beast” debuted at the D23 expo this weekend, and it apparently stunned attendees. Unfortunately for average fans, if you didn’t snag a ticket to the event, you won’t be able to see it for yourself.

Despite Disney declining to put the footage up online (so far, anyway), some savvy internet commenters have helped fill in the blanks for those who couldn’t witness “Beauty” (and the first look at its titular star, Emma Watson) in person. And it seems like the flick will almost certainly live up to the hype.

According to a member of the Broadway World message board, who was there for the presentation, “everything I’ve seen from BATB looks stunning, including Emma in the dress.” (“The dress” being the famous gold frock that Belle wears during her romantic dance with the Beast in the latter half of the film.) The commenter continued:

The crowds went wild for it. The set, visuals, costumes, etc. were beautiful. No footage of the objects or the beast.

Another eyewitness report, from TooFab, offers even more details about the footage, and the film in general:

Though nearly done filming, there wasn’t any complete footage shown from this one — save for a shot of Emma Watson as Belle in her now infamous gold dress, coming down the stairs to dance with the Beast. Let us just say that she looked GORGEOUS and seeing that moment brought to life brings chills.

In some behind-the-scenes footage shown, we got a look at the village set, which looks almost exactly like it did in the animated film. Belle is seen in her blue and white dress as well, while Gaston (Luke Evans) can be seen singing and dancing around a bar in his famous red costume and long ponytail. Sorry, nothing with the Beast in it just yet.

The crowd was told that the final film will include two new songs from Alan Menken.

It’s great knowing that filmmakers are so closely incorporating the look of the 1991 original, in everything from the sets to the costumes (anyone else just dying to see that gold dress already?). And Alan Menken’s involvement will almost certainly guarantee that “Beauty” earns a Best Original Song nomination at the Academy Awards, too.

We’d love to see the D23 stuff for ourselves, but if we have to wait, it’s comforting to know that it will be well worth it.

“Beauty and the Beast” is due in theaters on March 17, 2017.

  • See Josh Gad’s Bromantic ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Wrap Photo

Never mind Belle and the Beast, we’re ready for “Beauty and the Beast” to show the magical bromance of Gaston and Lefou! Disney’s live-action remake — starring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline, Ian McKellen, Ewan McGregor, and Stanley Tucci — is wrapping up filming and two of the stars shared a sweet nostalgic photo on set.

Josh Gad plays Lefou, opposite Luke Evans as the cocky Gaston. Luke’s Gaston may not find love with Emma’s Belle, but it sounds like the actors are leaving with a strong bond. Check out this photo from Josh, which was also shared with a note from Luke:

That’s a wrap! Will miss the cast of #beautyandthebeast especially my brilliant Gaston #LukeEvans

Awwww! Director Bill Condon recently shared more “Beauty and the Beast” details with Vanity Fair, promising some “really magical” scenes. The movie is scheduled for release March 17, 2017 — and yes, that’s a long time to wait to be their guest. It should be worth it, though! In the meantime, relive classic scenes like this one:

It will be a three-dimensional ride with images projected in 3D on an enormous 360-degree screen, which sounds like a dizzying proposition indeed.

  • ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Now Has Release Date – Plus Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline

Be Disney’s guest to watch Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as The Beast in “Beauty and the Beast,” which will be released on … March 17, 2017. That’s almost exactly two years from now, so pencil it in your calendar and start sewing your own version of Belle’s yellow dress to wear to the premiere. (Don’t judge, it’s a good idea!)

In addition to the “Harry Potter” and “Downton Abbey” alumni, Deadline notes, the live-action “Beauty and the Beast” movie will star the amazing Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Kevin Kline as Belle’s father, Luke Evans as Gaston, and Josh Gad as LeFou. Top that cast! Production is said to begin in London in May.

Hopefully director Bill Condon and company can have as much success with “Beauty and the Beast” as another “Downton” star is now having with the live-action “Cinderella.” We’re guessing this one will do even better. (Don’t believe us? Ask the dishes!)

  • ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Gets Josh Gad

Premiere Of Screen Gems' Things are coming up Disney for Josh Gad this week. Hot on the heels of yesterday’s “Frozen 2” news comes word that he’s very close to signing on the dotted line for the role of LeFou in Disney’s upcoming live action version of “Beauty and the Beast,” with Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast, and Luke Evans as Gaston. It’s safe to assume that this deal is a go, given Gad’s tweet earlier today.

LeFou is Gaston’s dorky sidekick, and although Gaston treats him like garbage, LeFou is unwaveringly loyal and always ready to cheer up his bro or help out with a nefarious plan. Both Gaston and LeFou were written for the original animated Disney film.

It’s a good move to get Gad on board, especially since he’s got mad musical chops. Gad snagged a Tony Award nomination for his role in “The Book of Mormon,” and he took home a Grammy with the rest of his “Mormon” team for 2012’s Best Musical Theater album. And even though we usually associate Evans with 3D blockbusters, he can also carry a tune or two. Watson, on the other hand, sounds a bit nervous about singing onscreen. As for Stevens? Well, maybe he’ll be a ringer. That Matthew Crawley is a man of many hidden talents.

“Beauty and the Beast” will be directed by Bill Condon. Meanwhile, you can catch Gad on the FX show “The Comedians,” and in the Sony animated feature “Pixels” this summer.

  • Dan Stevens to Play the Beast in Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Following yesterday’s pitch perfect announcement that Luke Evans had signed up to play Gaston in Disney’s live-action version of their groundbreaking animated fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast,” The Hollywood Reporter has made word that Dan Stevens, formerly of “Downton Abbey” and “The Guest” (one of our very favorite films from last year) has signed on to play the titular Beast. Stevens confirmed this news via the greatest tweet ever.

Stevens will play opposite Emma Watson, who will essay Belle in the Bill Condon-directed feature (set to begin filming sometime later this year), and perfectly embodies the kind of charm and ferocity required of the character. Recently we spoke to Glen Keane, the Disney animator responsible for bringing The Beast to life, and he told us who he thought should play the character in the live action remake: Tom Hardy. A very good choice but obviously Mr. Hardy’s dance card is awfully full if he’s bailing out of big projects like DC’s “Suicide Squad.”

The original animated film, of course, was the first animated feature to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar (it’s only happened twice since then, with “Up” and “Toy Story 3” and both times after the more lax 10-nominations parameters were set in place). It spawned several direct-to-video follow ups and an insanely popular Broadway show that has been spun off in a number of different countries and languages. This big screen transition is said to retain the musical element. Expect the next bit of casting news to be very famous people lending their voices to the enchanted objects in the Beast’s castle lair…

  • ‘Dracula Untold’ Star Luke Evans on Where the Universal Monsters Are Headed (EXCLUSIVE)

    %Slideshow-265878%
Earlier this week, “Dracula Untold,” the 2014 epic from Universal and Legendary that starred Luke Evans as the war-torn leader forced into making a very literal deal with the devil (and turning into the famous bloodsucker we know so well), was released on home video platforms, including digital download. To make the occasion, Universal flew a bunch of journalists out to Romania to walk around ancient castles from the era of the real-life historical figure, Vlad the Impaler. I, however, was not one of those journalists. (When your invitation is delivered via bat, it’s easy to see how it would get lost in transit.) So instead we got on the phone and spoke to the very charming Evans.

During the conversation, we talked about whether or not any previous big screen incarnations of Dracula inspired his performance, what the special features on the Blu-ray will offer fans of the film, where his character is going in the newly constructed Universal Monsters universe and whether or not he’s still starring in “The Crow.”

Moviefone: Did you take anything either from the original novel or from any of the other Dracula performances?

Luke Evans: Some of my favorite films are Dracula movies. “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” is up at the top. But because of where we start this story and the fact that it’s an origin story, which had really never been put to film before, I didn’t use anybody else’s Dracula performance or story to influence it because it felt like we were doing something completely new. You’re also not dealing with the vampire at the beginning of the film, you’re dealing with a human. He’s the ruler of a very small kingdom in eastern Europe and a man who is fighting for the lives of his people and his kingdom. We all felt a very real sense of freedom to depart from the Dracula films that had been made and also the Bram Stoker story because this was several hundred years before he was even born.

Was that a guiding principle throughout the production? To do something that hadn’t been done before?

Yeah definitely. I think there are enough vampire/Dracula movies out there. Vampires are a huge fascination and audiences love them but what we were trying to do was tell a different story. I think a lot of people who went and saw the film were shocked and excited by the fact that it wasn’t just a straightforward Dracula movie. It was a powerful love story between this man and his wife and how he fights for it and it had a powerful, emotional core to it. I thought that was interesting and people were quite surprised by it.

The movie went through some pretty radical changes and now with this Blu-ray you’re able to give people a sense of what it was. Are you excited for people to see that stuff?

Absolutely. There was a lot of work in every film and stuff gets cut and everybody feels a little sad to lose the work because you think about those hundreds of people who were on set that day or for that scene and so much time, effort, money, and creativity and building of sets and costumes and make-up and special effects… These are things that have to go into every single scene and when they’re cut, you’re like, “Oh my god.” That’s what’s great about DVDs like this one — we’ve really gone into depth with deleted scenes but we’ve also given people back story so they can see how we made those huge battle sequences. We had cameras on set all day long filming B-roll and doing little interviews here and there explaining what was going on and that’s why we did it. I think they’re really interesting. I love watching the behind-the-scenes stuff and bonus features. Peter Jackson is a huge supporter of it. We had people filming us for a year and a half and it’s cool because sometimes you watch the movie and if you like the movie you want to see how it was made. It’s going to be fun.

Would you like to see an entirely different cut with the stuff reinserted or are you pretty happy with how it turned out?

I’m pretty happy. I think the story works well as it is. I would be intrigued to see how those scenes would work and interact with the other scenes if they were put back in. But maybe that’s just me being inquisitive.

Do you know anything about where your character is going? We see you in present day at the end of the movie and we’ve heard about the Universal Monsters universe. Do you know what your next outing will be?

I sort of do, very loosely. But obviously it is so under wraps that to talk about it would not be good for me or good for anybody, really. It’s exciting and the wheels are in motion and it’s cool to think about Dracula coming back in a different film and whoever he comes back with… The plans are huge and the ideas are massive.

Is Dracula your favorite Universal Monster?

Oh, without a doubt. He’s the oldest and the best. He came to our screens in 1932. And he’s still around 100 years later. He’s a cool dude.

Are you still going to be The Crow?

I’m not sure. Scheduling and date-wise it’s becoming a little complicated. It’s been pushed back quite a few times. Right now, I have other things ready to go and that’s what I’m going to be doing. If “The Crow” finally gets going and all the stars align, maybe I will. But right now: no.'Dracula' Madrid Photocall
