‘Lucifer’ Renewed for 5th and Final Season on Netflix

    Netflix

“Lucifer” is going to hell — and this time, it’s not coming back.

The supernatural detective procedural has been renewed by Netflix for a fifth and final season.

“Lucifer” aired on Fox for three seasons before being cancelled; Netflix stepped in to order a 10-episode fourth season.

Based on the DC Comics character, the series stars Tom Ellis as the fallen angel, who abandons hell to work with the LAPD to take down criminals on Earth.

“We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms,” showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich said in a statement. “Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!”

The official “Lucifer” Twitter account posted a video of Ellis screaming joyfully, then adding, “I’ll see you in hell.”

“Lucifer” is risen, and he has a new challenge ahead thanks to the return of the original sinner.

After debuting a steamy teaser earlier this month, Netflix has released the official Season 4 trailer. It introduces Inbar Lavi as Eve, who is back for mysterious reasons. While Lucifer (Tom Ellis) is enthusiastic about her return, there’s a dark warning in the preview: “When the devil finds his first love, evil shall be released.”

The trailer also shows Chloe (Lauren German) dealing with having seen Lucifer’s devil face and Lucifer being torn between accepting the devil he is and the possibility of trying to be someone else. Watch below.

Although the show is headed into its fourth season, this is its first on Netflix. It previously aired on Fox, but the network canceled it last May. Netflix then revived “Lucifer” in June, giving it its second coming.

“Lucifer” Season 4 starts streaming May 8 on Netflix.

Salvation is almost here for “Lucifer” fans.

The comedy-drama’s new home, Netflix, has finally revealed the show’s premiere date and a new teaser. The streamer’s date with the Devil is set for May 8, and it looks like the show may be hotter than ever. The teaser is steamy in multiple sense of the word — it shows star Tom Ellis, who plays Lucifer Morningstar, emerging shirtless from a hot tub. The video then teases, “He is risen.” Watch below.

Season 4 won’t be all hot tub time for Lucifer. The video description offers a look at some of what we can expect to see:

Reeling from the aftermath of Chloe seeing his devil face, Lucifer faces a new challenge: Eve, the original sinner herself, is back. Does she want revenge for when he tempted her out of Eden oh so many years ago… or something else entirely?

The upcoming season was hardly a given. Fox canceled the show in May, but fortunately for fans, Netflix revived “Lucifer” the following month. Considering its brush with death, it may be all the more cherished when the new episodes arrive.

“Lucifer” Season 4 hits Netflix on May 8.

  • ‘Lucifer’ Stars Thank Fans for Netflix Pickup: ‘We Will Not Let Any of You Down’

“Lucifer” star Tom Ellis was so happy about the Netflix pickup, he rocked some devil horns and wrote a song for you.

“Lucifer” lives, and the cast and crew know it’s all because of the Lucifans. Fox canceled “Lucifer” after three seasons, and the huge fan outcry at #SaveLucifer and #PickUpLucifer eventually bore fruit. The deadline to pick up the show was said to be June 16, and on June 15 the happy news came out that Netflix had decided to save the series for Season 3.

Well, Lucifans were ecstatic, but the cast and writers/producers were even more grateful — to both Netflix and to the viewers who pushed to keep the show alive.

According to TVLine, Netflix ordered 10 episodes for “Lucifer” Season 4, with production expected to start around August. It’s not clear yet when Netflix will air it. But it’s certainly great news for fans of the show, and for any show that gets canceled. Just speak UP!

  • ‘Lucifer’ Revived By Netflix After Fox Cancellation

“Lucifer” is rising back from the dead. Netflix is picking up the drama for Season 4 after it was cancelled by Fox last month.

It’s the second canceled Fox show to find life elsewhere; “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” was saved by NBC.

“Lucifer” is a DC Entertainment show produced by Warner Bros., which has a healthy relationship with Netflix. The streaming service had previously revived “Longmire,” a former A&E show. And Netflix is order Warner Bros.’ “Riverdale” spinoff, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”

The show, based on a character from the “Sandman” comics, was never a huge ratings hit, averaging just below 3.3 million viewers Live+Same Day in Season 3. But fans made a huge outcry when it was cancelled, starting petitions and voicing their passion for the show on social media.

“Lucifer” stars Tom Ellis as the titular fallen angel who works with the LAPD to catch criminals on Earth.

  • ‘Lucifer’ Star Says Streaming Network Has to Save Show by June 16

Hell hath no fury like “Lucifer” fans scorned — but heaven also has no hope like “Lucifer” fans waiting for salvation.

“Lucifer” was canceled by Fox after three seasons and two bonus episodes. Fans have been tweeting their hearts out, along with the stars, to try and get someone to pick up the show. Tom Ellis and other cast members have mentioned conversations with potential new networks, and now we’re hearing that whatever happens has to happen by this Saturday, June 16.

That’s the word from Lauren German (Detective Chloe Decker), who spoke during the “Lucifer” panel at Oz Comic-Con in Melbourne, Australia. Here’s her #SaveLucifer and #PickUpLucifer update, via ComicBook.com:

“It’s beautiful. I can’t tell you guys how hard it is to hear that the show is ending and then she and I come out here and see all of you and then online the hashtags and the petitions being signed and the campaigns that are going. We don’t know that stuff’s gonna happen. It just pops up and it’s just, you know it’s heartwarming, it’s amazing, and I don’t know if all of you know basically you know Fox has cancelled us, so we won’t be happening on Fox, but there’s a chance that a streaming network might pick us up and that would have to happen by June 16th. It’s like we can’t contractually audition for anything until June 16th and then, sadly, we are free to go after that. So, we’re just praying, praying it happens.”

She said something similar to The Iris of Australia:

“Now, I have heard, not to get anyone’s hopes up or anything because I’m certainly am proceeding as if I’m looking for a new job but, I’ve heard that there is a chance a streaming channel could pick us up and we will hear about it by the 16th June. So, if it happens, amazing, and if not, you know, onward. Yeah, I was completely surprised that we didn’t get a season 4. It just seemed like it was gonna happen and we’ve so much of a story left to tell and I do know that our set in L.A. have not been taken down yet so, you know, that’s a good sign.”

So June 16 is Cinderella’s midnight. If the stars know what’s happening (or not happening) at that point, they will probably pass the word straight on to the fans.

In the meantime, Lauren German retweeted notes like this one to keep fans pushing for a pickup:

  • ‘Lucifer’ Fans & Others Try to Slide Into ABC’s ‘Roseanne’ Opening

Let’s play Fill That Slot! Yes, it sounds dirty. But dirty fits right about now.

ABC just canceled “Roseanne,” the highest-rated and most watched freshman series of the 2017-2018 TV season. So that means there’s an opening. And so many canceled shows are hoping to be plucked from the masses to fill it.

“Roseanne” had a solid Tuesday night timeslot, so it’s possible ABC will give that spot to one of its popular existing shows or pilots, either pulling one from midseason or otherwise. But even if they fill the Tuesday primetime spot from in-house, that still leaves an opening on another day/time or midseason.

    Enter … “Lucifer”?

Maybe. Maybe not. But it’s worth a shot, so Lucifans used the “Roseanne” cancellation on Tuesday to make their case to ABC.

Funny to think of a show called “Lucifer” as the less problematic option, but there you have it.

Just last night, Fox aired its two “bonus” episodes of “Lucifer,” which didn’t light up the ratings but they did get the show trending on Twitter with 341,000 tweets.

Fox had canceled “Lucifer” from a “ratings-based decision,” so ABC wouldn’t be making an even trade to get “Lucifer” for “Roseanne.” But the fact that ABC was willing to part with such a cash cow shows they do care about more than just money. And the fans who do watch “Lucifer” are devoted, and would be grateful to their savior.

If ABC isn’t interested, there’s still hope that “Lucifer” has another taker; the stars have talked about conversations with various networks. It’s not over till they say it’s over.

A few other past TV show stars also spoke up after ABC canceled “Roseanne,” pointing out that they’re available, too:

If not “Lucifer,” yes to “Pushing Daisies,” please. The wonderfully quirky romance dramedy aired two seasons on ABC from 2007 to 2009 and the cast and fans have been pushing for a comeback ever since.

“Enlisted” only got one season on Fox, and since Fox just picked up ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” maybe ABC would make a trade?

Zach Braff is fresh off “Alex, Inc.,” which only lasted one season on ABC. His hit comedy “Scrubs” started out on NBC before ABC saved it for Season 8 and Season 9.

ABC will replace “Roseanne” with something on Tuesday nights this fall. Stay tuned…

  • ‘Lucifer’ Bonus Episodes to Air Following Show’s Cancellation

Fox hasn’t totally forsaken “Lucifer” fans.

The network revealed May 11 that it had opted not to renew the series, leaving many of the show’s followers hoping for a save. So far, no other network nor a streaming service has stepped in to be the hero. However, there is some good news: Fox plans to air two “bonus” episodes on May 28, per Deadline.

The “Lucifer” Season 3 finale aired May 14, and it ended on a huge cliffhanger, much to fans’ dismay. The two bonus episodes will, unfortunately, not likely function as any kind of conclusion. They were filmed last spring and intended to be part of the show’s fourth season. Still, bonus episodes are better than nothing.

And hope for a save isn’t totally gone. Showrunner Joe Henderson is still doing what he can to make it happen. He tweeted “#SAVELUCIFER #PickupLucifer” after Fox’s announcement about the two episodes set to air, so clearly he’s not ready to toss in the towel.

The “Lucifer” bonus episodes will air back-to-back on May 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

  • ‘Lucifer’ Finale Tweets Show the Episode Left Fans Desperate for More

Forget saying goodbye — after the “Lucifer” finale, fans are ready to raise hell.

Following Fox’s surprise cancellation on May 11, the show’s loyal viewers immediately started a push to save “Lucifer.” Now, after the May 14 finale, it looks like they’re only more motivated. They’ve been tweeting up a storm trying to get Fox to change its mind, another network or streaming service to step in, or even to inspire people to crowdfund for a movie.

Showrunner Joe Henderson had warned fans via Twitter on May 11 that the episode wasn’t meant to be a conclusion. Apparently, they’d hoped setting up for another season would ensure the show’s future.

“We created a season finale with a huge cliffhanger so that there was no way Fox could cancel us,” he wrote. “Instead, we’re going to frustrate the hell out of you fans. I’m so sorry for that.”

Now that the finale has aired, though, Henderson has expressed a bit more hope that the show could have a future — perhaps after seeing NBC save “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which Fox also recently canceled. Following the finale, he tweeted, “Well, there you go. Our season finale, and the best case we can make for another season. Lots of story we’d love to tell, if we get the chance.”

And fans are clamoring for “Lucifer” to get that chance. They’ve been busy making the case for another season on Twitter.

    May the hell-raising pay off.

  • Fox Defends Canceling ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ & ‘Lucifer’; NBC Explains Saving B99

Fox also explained why it saved “Last Man Standing.”

These past couple of weeks have been sheer madness on the TV schedule front. Canceled, renewed, saved, on the bubble. One of the biggest headlines last week was Fox dumping “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” only for NBC to pick it up just one day later.

NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt explained why they so quickly saved the show (via EW):

“Brooklyn is a show our company produces for Fox, so it’s a show that’s very close to us. I’ve been saying to certain people in the press that if we knew Andy Samberg was going to be cast in that show, we never would have sold it to Fox. We’ve been watching it closely ever since. … We jumped on it really quickly and are thrilled to have it and think it fits into our brand of comedy in many ways better than it fit into Fox’s brand of comedy. It feels like it goes along shows like A.P. Bio, Will & Grace, Superstore, and The Good Place. … It’s also one of the few comedies in recent years that does a robust international number, and it has a syndication upside, which a lot of shows don’t have anymore.”

Greenblatt said it was great to see that the fans were as outraged as they were by Fox’s B99 cancellation. But it sounds like the fan push to renew the show wasn’t really a big factor for NBC, since they were already on the same page.

However, he added, “We love when fans yell and scream on Twitter, but we hope that transfers and they watch the show.” Yeah, don’t forget to watch the show. Hopefully NBC just puts it on at one specific day and time and doesn’t move it around. Fox didn’t seem to know what to do with it.

Speaking of Fox, the network revealed its Fall 2018-2019 schedule on Monday. Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEO Dana Walden answered why they canceled “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”:

“It was based on a variety of factors. We love this show, those are great creators, it’s a phenomenal cast. We ordered it throughout five seasons. It’s a great length of time for a single-camera comedy. Ultimately we felt like we didn’t have the exact right place to schedule it this year. It performed best in our Sunday night lineup. We wanted to give Bob’s Burgers an opportunity to have a plum time period and really grow. It really limited the opportunities to schedule Brooklyn. With Thursday Night Football, there were two fewer hours to program. We were trying to create a more cohesive program, and scheduling Brooklyn would prevent us from promoting something new. Ultimately we decided we just didn’t have room for it and were trying we’re really happy its found a new home.”

LAST MAN STANDING - "Heavy Meddle" - When Eve's boyfriend, Rob (guest star Travis Tope), doesn't invite her to his parents' anniversary party, Vanessa feels that Eve should tell him how this makes her feel. But Mike disagrees and thinks it's better for Eve to not say anything. Meanwhile, Kristin and Ryan think it's beyond the airy Mandy and Kyle to find the hidden clues in an escape room, on "Last Man Standing," airing FRIDAY, MARCH 17 (8:00-8:31 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network. (Eric McCandless/ABC via Getty Images)NANCY TRAVIS, TIM ALLENWalden also addressed picking up ABC’s canceled “Last Man Standing,” sort of tying it to the success of “Roseanne” but also emphasizing that they were interested even before that revival:

“Obviously I think everyone took a good hard look at the performance of Roseanne. It did so well and it certainly did remind us that we have a huge iconic comedy star in our fox family in Tim Allen. We tried to move Last Man Standing over last year when ABC decided not to move forward. It’s a really funny show. It had nothing to do with Roseanne that we were interested in the first place. We always felt like ABC didn’t really prioritize Last Man Standing. We always wondered how it would do if it was given a better opportunity and prioritized more in terms of a network’s agenda. We were emboldened by Roseanne.”

During Fox’s upfront press call on Monday, execs were also asked about canceling “Lucifer.”

Fox chairman Gary Newman said that was “a ratings-based decision; we had very a successful late year with all four new dramas renewed. We felt like performance-wise, we needed to make that change.”

So, in business-speak, it’s great that passionate fans got #SaveLucifer trending, but there weren’t enough of those fans for the show to stay on the schedule for a fourth season.
