Kristen Stewart is one of the most popular and talented actresses working today!

After appearing in director David Fincher‘s ‘Panic Room‘, Stewart’s breakout performance was as Bella Swan in ‘Twilight‘ and its subsequent sequels. But since then she has appeared in such popular and critically acclaimed films as ‘Adventureland‘, ”The Runaways‘, 2019’s ‘Charlie’s Angels‘, ‘Love Lies Bleeding‘ and ‘Spencer‘, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.

- ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘A Real Pain’ also did well.
- The awards were handed out on February 16th in London.
The BAFTA Film Awards have been handed out this evening at a ceremony held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted once more by former ‘Doctor Who’ actor David Tennant.

Dropping references to the current political climate and less pointed jokes at the expense of stars in the audience (he warned the assembled crowd that there would be no intermission as with ‘The Brutalist’ and to keep their speeches the opposite of their movies –– short.

‘Conclave,’ ‘Anora’ and ‘The Brutalist’ won multiple awards, the former nabbing Best Original Screenplay, British film and the big trophy, Best Film, while the latter scored Best Director, Leading Actor (for Adrien Brody) Score and more. ‘Anora,’ meanwhile, saw lead Mikey Madison took the stage for ‘Anora.’

The likes of ‘Wicked’ and ‘Dune: Part Two’ mostly made do with technical awards, including Production Design, Costume, Sound and Visual Effects.

As for Supporting Actor, that might as well be renamed The Kieran Culkin award given how many trophies the ‘A Real Pain’ actor has won this season. If there is a lock for an Oscar, he’s surely it.

And despite the recent social media controversy surrounding lead Karla Sofía Gascón, ‘Emilia Pérez’ went home with several awards, including Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana and Film Not in the English Language.

There was brief confusion for fellow ‘Pérez’ actors Saldana and Selena Gomez, who stumbled over who had won the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, Producer, ultimately given to ‘Kneecap’ filmmaker Rich Peppiatt.

Documentary ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,’ despite missing out on an Oscar nomination, won its BAFTA category.

Opening in theaters on January 31st is post-apocalyptic romance ‘Love Me’, which was written and directed by Sam and Andy Zuchero, and stars Kristen Stewart (‘Love Lies Bleeding’) and Steven Yeun (‘Beef’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun about their work on ‘Love Me’, their first reaction to the screenplay, how they approached playing their unusual characters, and the difficulties of the human relationship that they form.

Moviefone: To begin with, Kristen, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and Sam and Andy Zuchero’s unusual vision for this project?

Kristen Stewart: I thought it was one of the most experimental, weird, ambitious, bizarre things that I had read. I thought the endeavor was a little cuckoo because it doesn’t profess to answer any of these unanswerable existential questions, and it doesn’t. I don’t think it’s something that’s like, “Oh, this is a movie that takes place in the future and therefore has all these conclusions”. It was like an invitation to do a really elaborate acting exercise that would reveal us to ourselves and each other daily. It was a diving board. The script felt like the most confronting thing about it wasn’t its setting or its characters, it was just how unfixed identity is. It can be scary if you suddenly find yourself responsible for determining those things. It holds a mirror just like a centimeter away from your face, basically. I just also watched a short film that they made that was equally as daring and I wanted to hang out with them. I was drawn to their curiosity and their earnestness and that’s it.

MF: Steven, can you talk about your approach to playing these characters, both in live-action and animation, what was that process like for you?

Steven Yeun: Mine was probably a different experience in that my characters were largely reflecting off Kristen’s characters. He was wanting to be, in some ways defined by it, but then also struggled with that tension. I was following and reacting and playing that mirror consciously, in a way. So, it was fun. It was also revealing of the character’s own tension with wanting his own control or its own control. It’s an exercise in surrender and control. It’s just that tension between those two things.

MF: Finally, Kristen, while this is a story about two machines, they end up having a very human connection and relationship. Can you talk about that and the message of the movie?

KS: I mean, I guess instead of doing a movie where you have two isolated people that can’t be affected by affectation or own individual experiences, if you were to just all of a sudden be dropped into consciousness if you were a matured person who could potentially write the storybook of your life with an intellect that didn’t need to be acquired and that was never shaped by individual experience, is genuinely just the knowable universe, I think that immediately renders a person. Well, these people don’t exist, right? This is all a metaphor. Buoys don’t talk to satellites. I mean, they do, but not in this way. I think maybe just the opportunity to allow something that you immediately diminish as something that couldn’t be alive, you must stay open. I mean, it’s so presumptuous. It’s like you only know what’s going on within yourself. I think, playing babies in adult bodies or the idea of bodies. This was just a movie about unfixed identity, defining that weird friction and contrast between reality, what real is compared to everyone’s own unique experiences and how they differ, reality doesn’t exist. So, we all must define it for ourselves, and it just felt like a base look at that. I was down to being in a vacuous space with Steven trying to figure out what all that means.

As the tragic wildfires continue to wreak havoc across Hollywood award bodies, with nomination announcements and ceremonies delayed or cancelled, the UK’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts is pushing ahead with their own annual celebration.

The nominations for this year’s BAFTA film awards have been announced, and it’s a good year for ‘Conclave’ and ‘Emilia Pérez’ in particular, which were nominated for 12 and 11 awards respectively.

Beyond the big two, there was also good news for movies such as ‘The Brutalist,’ ‘Anora,’ ‘Wicked’ and ‘A Complete Unknown,’ which have cropped up on a variety of other lists so far and are all expected to scoop various trophies once awards season can truly progress.

And this being the UK, there are naturally some categories that don’t crop up elsewhere, spotlighting British talent (which explains why Steve McQueen’s ‘Blitz,’ which hasn’t exactly been grabbing up nominations, saw more love here.

What are the snubs and surprises of this year’s ‘BAFTA’ Film Awards?

Denzel Washington plays Macrinus in ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

While ‘Gladiator II’ has had a hard time cracking nomination lists, we were surprised to see Denzel Washington shut out of the Supporting Actor line-up.

Luca Guadagnino’s duo ‘Queer’ and ‘Challengers’ were both Golden Globe nominated, including for leads Daniel Craig and Zendaya, but neither made the cut today. Both had made the BAFTA longlist.

‘Paddington in Peru,’ meanwhile, the third film in the beloved bear franchise, had the biggest opening for a British film since 2021 and has made a whopping $43M in the UK, but reviews weren’t as favorable as the first two films in the series and the movie couldn’t secure a BAFTA nom even despite the new kids and family category this year.

Both previous ‘Paddington‘ movies received multiple BAFTA nominations.

The BAFTA Awards this year will be held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on February 16th, hosted once more by former ‘Doctor Who’ actor David Tennant.

Katy O’Brian has been getting a lot of attention of late, not least because of her role in Sundance hit ‘Love Lies Bleeding.’

She has now scored one of the main roles in the next movie from ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Last Night in Soho’ director Edgar Wright, who for a while now has been planning to make an adaptation of Steven King story ‘The Running Man.’

The dystopian tale has already seen screens before –– it was adapted into a 1987 action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (then at the height of his movie stardom), which, while it’s far from excellent, has a cult following.

Wright is bringing his own spin to it, having co-written the script with his ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World’ collaborator Michael Bacall and scoring no less a star than Glen Powell to lead the movie.

What’s the story of ‘The Running Man’?

‘Running Man,’ which King published in 1982 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, was set in 2025 in an America under a totalitarian regime that uses violent game shows to placate the disenfranchised masses.

The story centered on one desperate man, needing money for his sick daughter, who joins the most popular show, ‘The Running Man,’ in which teams of killers hunt down contestants. The longer that a contestant survives, the more money that person makes. But as the game show’s producers and killers will find out, our conflicted hero will break all the rules and expose the show’s dark secrets.

Powell is playing the main character, while O’Brian would be one of the other contestants –– though given her background in bodybuilding, we could also see her as one of the show’s stars whom Powell has to defeat.

While ‘Love Lives Bleeding,’ (in which she co-starred opposite Kristen Stewart) brought her a lot of attention, Katy O’Brian has been working steadily for years.

Her notable past jobs include a run on CW DC series ‘Black Lightning’ as Major Sara Grey, appearances on shows such as ‘Westworld,’ and ‘The Mandalorian’ and movies including ‘Sweet Girl’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.’

Next up for her in release date terms is an unknown role in the next ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie, which lands in theaters on May 23rd next year.

And ‘The Running Man’ won’t even represent her first collaboration with Powell, as she was also seen as part of his crew in this summer’s disaster movie hit ‘Twisters.’

Movie Review: ‘Love Lies Bleeding’

In theaters now is ‘Love Lies Bleeding,’ starring Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian, Ed Harris, Jena Malone, and Dave Franco.

Initial Thoughts

After watching one deeply flawed comedy about lesbian lovers mixed up in two-bit crime (‘Drive Away Dolls’) and another decent but workmanlike thriller about corruption blanketing a small town (‘Red Right Hand’), it’s nice to see a movie that brings both of those together and gets them dead right. ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ is a grimy romance about two star-crossed, desperate lovers mixed up in crime, murder, family dysfunction, and, uh, bodybuilding that works on nearly every level.

Directed with style by Rose Glass (who also co-wrote the script) and featuring an outstanding cast led by an excellent Kristen Stewart, ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ focuses on Stewart’s Lou, a lonely, seemingly standoffish gym manager in a small New Mexico town who’s trying to keep her distance from the druggie, needy Daisy (Anna Baryshnikov) and generally keep her head down. But things change when would-be professional bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian) walks into the gym, stopping in town on her way to a national bodybuilding competition in Las Vegas.

Lou and Jackie fall madly and hotly for each other, with Lou providing Jackie with steroids and agreeing to travel with her to Vegas. But those plans are soon called into doubt by events concerning Lou’s sister Beth (Jena Malone), her brutal brother-in-law JJ (Dave Franco), and Lou’s estranged father, Lou Sr. (Ed Harris), who not only owns the gym and a local shooting range, but is also a gun-runner with an iron grip on much of the town – including his family, whom he treats with an unsettling mix of menace and tenderness.

Most of the plot details of ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ should remain unspoiled, since its twisting, suspenseful blend of unapologetic queer romance, sex, crime, ‘roid rage, and grisly violence are best left to discover as one watches the film. While there is a certain predictability to the overall narrative – this is, in the end, a neo-noir that adheres to many of the genre’s tropes – Glass and co-writer Weronika Tofilska create truly memorable characters and throw in enough curveballs and details to keep one hooked, capably backed by Ben Fordesman’s stunning cinematography and Clint Mansell’s pulsating score.

In addition to the erotic tension between Lou and Jackie, as well as the much more sinister dynamic between Lou, Lou Sr., and their family, Glass also navigates a successful balance between the film’s gritty, late ‘80s setting (we first meet Lou cleaning out a clogged toilet in the gym, which shares the same unwashed, peeling, faded aesthetic as almost everything else in the film), its stylized cinematography that utilizes glowing neon like paint, and the fantasy sequences that reflect the characters’ obsessive, frenetic mindsets and the film’s fever dream quality.

In one late scene, Lou envisions Jackie in, shall we say, enhanced form, while Jackie, whose ambitions trip easily into unhealthy fixation, imagines her muscles cracking through her skin in Hulk-like fashion. All this turns ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ into a dizzying kaleidoscope of images that is equal parts sexy, sweaty, surreal, and stomach-churning, but which keeps the focus on its small yet effective cast – particularly the two leads, whose desire for each other and something better in their lives provide the fuse that lights this entertaining thriller up.

Kristen Stewart gives one of her most raw, passionate performances as Lou. Initially appearing as bored and aloof, resigned her to her life of cleaning vomit out of toilets and presiding over grunting, perspiring men in her dad’s gym, she comes to life when she first spies Jackie. From there, her desire for the bodybuilder – or perhaps her yearning to escape from her dead-end town and the oppressive thumb of her father – drives her to extremes both psychologically and physically.

It’s terrific work from start to finish, and Katy O’Brian nearly matches her in her first major lead role, for which the actor – already experienced in martial arts and bodybuilding – trained extensively to get Jackie into the physically imposing shape she needs for her ambitions. But Jackie is also capable of pushing herself too far, and the combination of that and steroids push her into a state of rage that has devastating consequences. It’s a tour de force from O’Brian, who balances her formidable power with tenderness and vulnerability.

The other major characters are also deftly handled. Although Ed Harris has spent the last few years on ‘Westworld,’ this is the meatiest big-screen role we’ve seen him in for a while, and he delivers brilliantly. Lou Sr. is both a seemingly loving father and a ruthless crime king, capable of being protective and caring yet also unrelenting and frightening. Jena Malone is heartbreaking as his other daughter, Beth, the acquiescent victim of domestic abuse, while Dave Franco parlays his normal charm into something insidiously toxic as her sleazy, vicious husband JJ.

Final Thoughts: No Sophomore Slump

Rose Glass arrived on the scene in 2019 with ‘Saint Maud,’ a hallucinatory psychological horror film about a caregiver whose religious fervor carves out a horrific path for both herself and her patient. Glass switches genres effortlessly with ‘Love Lies Bleeding,’ employing some of the same surrealistic imagery and visual palette to tell a more complex story. Some of that imagery and some of the humor is a bit jarring within the overall tone of the movie, and there’s a certain inevitability that comes with the genre territory, but ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ is still an outstanding second feature from this British filmmaker.

Moviefone: To begin with, Kristen, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and the aspects of your character that you were excited to explore on screen?

Kristen Stewart: The movie’s like a mix between a fantasy and a nightmare. It’s a real fever dream. It starts in this kind of isolated insular space, someone paralyzed by whatever kind of baggage she may be carrying around. Very addicted to the baggage, addicted to smoking, addicted to isolation, and just sort of stuck. She’s like this immovable object, and then she sees the epitome of what the breadth of life could offer you, which is this vivacious, incredible, strong woman who takes up an unbelievable amount of space. Then she figures, “Oh, maybe I shouldn’t delete myself.” But then what happens is all her baggage starts spewing out into the world and ruining her relationship. I just thought that it was a good script. It was funny, it was scary and sad, and I wasn’t sure if I loved or hated Lou, but ultimately, she’s a nice guy and I think she’s trying hard and so I do like her. I just thought Rose’s first movie was great. So, if I could be in her second one, that would be cool.

MF: Katy, can you talk about your approach to playing Jackie, both emotionally and physically, and her relationship with Lou?

Katy O’Brian: So, the prep was standard to an actual bodybuilding competition, which I thought was really fun because I’d done that before. I was like, “Yeah, let’s do this.” But I practiced my posing more for this than I did for an actual competition. Because I think when I do figure it’s like four poses and this, we were doing kind of more in line with the ’80s, which was the time for bodybuilding. Rose helped so much with that too, because I’m a tense person usually, and Rose is like, “I want it to be like this. I have pictures.” I loved it. I’m obsessed. Then, the character, it’s one of the things that I love about acting is that you get to build off everyone else too. So, I had what I pictured for Jackie, and then it’s like someone might feed you a response and you’re like, “Oh wow.” It just changes even your mindset, the character’s mindset, everything. You just get to kind of play with each other and build this cool crazy thing. Then Rose adds, “Make it bigger, make it stronger.” We were talking, but it’s really an intuitive process. We sometimes had the luxury to find the moment and it was just cool and you just get chills.

MF: Rose, is that typically the way you like to direct?

Rose Glass: I think you must. On the one hand, every moment of time is precious, so you plan things with a lot of precision. But then, it’s like with these guys finding exactly what the version of that thing is that’s going to feel real. So, I don’t know, the whole thing’s a weird sort of moving sculpture.

MF: Rose, can you talk about the challenges of finding the right tone for this movie?

Rose Glass: I guess that’s something you’re doing constantly at every stage, as you’re writing it, as you’re shooting it, you do different takes of like, “Now we’ll do the big ridiculous one, and now we’ll try the small one.” Then you continue doing it in the editing, the sound, and everything. There’s just a lot of stuff that goes into it and a lot of people doing different things, and it’s just trying to figure out how to smush them all together satisfyingly.

MF: Finally, Kristen, what was your experience like working with Rose on set?

KS: She’s a good director, somebody who has vision, and knows how to make sure it doesn’t fall off the ledge.

She may have missed out on an Oscar this year following her acclaimed turn in ‘Spencer’, but Kristen Stewart shows no signs of slowing down.

The actor has now signed on to play one of the lead roles in director Rose Glass’ next film ‘Love Lies Bleeding’.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’ll be a romantic drama set in the ultra-competitive world of bodybuilding, where contestants will do anything to succeed. The unofficial description is “a romance fueled by ego, desire and the American Dream.”

‘Love Lies Bleeding’ will focus on a female bodybuilder who adopts the extreme qualities it takes to succeed in that pressure-filled world.

Stewart won’t be bulking up for this one, though – she’s playing the second lead of the film, the supportive partner of the bodybuilder. The producers and director are now busy searching for someone to play that main part, with the plan to cast as authentically as possible, which could well mean a complete newcomer.

Glass has seen success already with her first film, psychological horror movie ‘Saint Maud’, which focused on a nun obsessed with a patient. The movie earned her the Douglas Hickox Award for best debut director at the British Independent Film Awards, on top of 15 other nominations. It was also nominated for a BAFTA for outstanding British film of the year as well as outstanding debut by a British writer, director, or producer.

We’ve been wondering what she might do by way of a follow-up, and the idea of her collaborating with a talent such as Stewart is certainly an exciting one.

The script for ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ comes from Glass and Weronika Tofilska, a writer and director who has worked on projects including the ‘His Dark Materials’ adaptation for HBO.

This new indie movie represents an Avengers-style team-up between two of the best-known companies in that field, the UK’s Film4, which originally developed the film alongside Glass and co., and A24, which has recently released the likes of ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and has Alex Garland’s horror ‘Men’ on the horizon.

A24 will produce alongside Andrea Cornwell for Lobo Films and Oliver Kassman for Escape Plan Productions.

As for Stewart, she’s worked on David Cronenberg’s next film, ‘Crimes of the Future’ and is looking to make her directorial debut with an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir ‘The Chronology of Water’. Stewart is also loosely attached to actor Ben Foster’s latest directorial effort, an untitled drama about the Beat generation poet William S. Burroughs. That film would see Stewart playing Joan Vollmer, one of the key romantic figures in Burroughs’ life.

‘Love Lies Bleeding’ represents just the latest step for Stewart, who has shown a driving desire to work on interesting indie projects following her years in the ‘Twilight’ franchise.

The new romantic drama doesn’t have a release date yet, which is hardly a surprise since it’s still coming together.
