‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

On Hulu on June 6th is ‘Predator: Killer of Killers,’ an animated anthology that has Predator creatures dropping in on three very different time periods of Earth.

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (‘Prey’), it features the voices of Rick Gonzalez, Damien Haas, Doug Cockle, Michael Biehn and Louis Ozawa.

Dan Trachtenberg certainly brought a breath of fresh air to the ‘Predator’ franchise after even Shane Black couldn’t manage to breathe new life into it with the disappointing ‘The Predator.’ So Trachtenberg has naturally been given free rein to explore other avenues, and he’s been on a cherry picking mission through the wider Predator mythology (which includes comic books, novelizations and video games) to find different looks for the Yautja aliens –– the Predators’ actual species name –– and different human challenges for them to face.

Yet as with any attempt to build on an existing franchise, does ‘Killer of Killers’ establish itself as worthy?

    Script and Direction

Trachtenberg worked up the story for the new movie alongside Micho Robert Rutare, with the latter tasked into turning their concepts into a screenplay. The result, as with any anthology is a mixed bag, with one of the stories standing out from the others; though all have something to recommend them.

The first, ‘The Shield,’ takes place in Viking times (841 A.D. if you really want to get specific), and sees a Predator incursion interrupting a clash between clan leader Ursa and Zoran, the war chief who murdered her father. A little like ‘Prey,’ it follows a rite of passage, as Ursa’s son Anders is being encouraged to fight like a warrior. Suffice to say, there are plenty of hacked limbs and slashed midriffs –– and that’s before the Predator creature even shows up.

‘The Shield’ manages some good moments undercutting expectations, though it is also relatively slight.

‘The Sword’ brings us forward in time to Samurai-era Japan, where a ninja has turned against the Samurai brother he was raised opposite. This time, the story of vengeance is slightly more nuanced, and the Predator who arrives to add to the chaos nimbler than the previous example.

Finally, ‘The Bullet,’ the third story, is set during World War II and features something truly new and different –– at least in big-screen ‘Predator’ action –– while it is the story of young mechanic (and wannabe pilot) Torres, it’s mostly set in the air, as American fighter planes take on a Predator spaceship.

It won’t surprise you to learn, particularly given Trachtenberg’s involvement, that there is also more going on here –– but spoiler concerns prevent us from talking more about that element. Suffice to say, there are connections here that slowly reveal themselves, and deepen the story.

On the animation front, Josh Wassung’s team acquit themselves admirably, creating subtly different styles for each time period, but finding a way to have them feel of a piece. While occasional moments can look like a video game cutscene, and the jerky animation can take a little getting used to, the overall effect works.

And, as mentioned, setting these stories in an animated world gives plenty of scope for bigger action set pieces and wilder moments.

    Cast and Performances

Barring one or two recognizable names (Michael Biehn, Rick Gonzalez, Lauren Holt, Louis Ozawa and Doug Cockle), the voice cast here is mostly made up of people who will be familiar to die-hard gamers and animation fans.

Still, there are effective performances here –– Gonzalez gets a chance to shine as Torres, the young mechanic with some serious piloting chops in the World War II entry, while Lindsay LaVanchy does good work as Ursa, the Viking warrior aiming to forge the next generation of fighter while burning with vengeful fury.

Though the script and, by nature the anthology format, doesn’t always give the cast the most rounded of characters to play, they all work well.

    Final Thoughts

Some ‘Predator’ fanatics might quibble with a few details here and there, and the quality of the stories can be mixed, but ‘Killer of Killers’ proves to be a welcome addition to the franchise, providing some visuals that would be prohibitively expensive in live-action and leaning into the mythology.

A few lingering story tendrils push it into Marvel territory in terms of wondering if this is all place-setting for Trachtenberg’s upcoming live-action ‘Predator: Badlands,’ but again, to even speculate about that is verging on spoiler territory.

And regardless, ‘Killer of Killers’ manages to tell a mostly contained, solid story with some welcome, clever nods to the ‘Predator’ movies of the past.

What’s the story of ‘Predator: Killer of Killers’?

The anthology story follows three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge, a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession, and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause.

But while all these warriors are killers in their own right, they are merely prey for their new opponent –– the ultimate killer of killers.

  • ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 4 – Michael Peña and Louis Ozawa

    VGMl2jUN

Premiering on Prime Video beginning June 30th is the fourth and final season of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,’ which is based on the popular literary and cinematic character and stars John Krasinski (‘A Quiet Place’) in the title role.

What is the plot of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 4?

The fourth and final season of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ finds the titular character on his most dangerous mission yet: facing an enemy both foreign and domestic. As the new CIA Acting Deputy Director, Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) is tasked with unearthing internal corruption, and in doing so, uncovers a series of suspicious black ops that could expose the vulnerability of the country. As Jack and the team investigate how deep the corruption runs, he discovers a far-worse reality—the convergence of a drug cartel with a terrorist organization—ultimately revealing a conspiracy much closer to home and testing our hero’s belief in the system he has always fought to protect.

Who is in the cast of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 4?

‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ season 4 stars John Krasinski (‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’) as Jack Ryan, Wendell Pierce (‘Selma’) as James Greer, Michael Kelly (‘Man of Steel’) as Mike November, and Betty Gabriel (‘The Purge: Election Year’) as CIA Acting Director Elizabeth Wright, with Abbie Cornish (‘Sucker Punch’) returning as Cathy Mueller. Joining the cast this season are Michael Peña (‘Ant-Man’) as Domingo Chavez and Louis Ozawa (‘Predators’) as Chao Fah.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Peña and Louis Ozawa about their work on ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 4, how Peña’s character is different than Jack Ryan, why Ozawa’s character is torn between business and family, and working opposite actor and filmmaker John Krasinski.

Moviefone: To begin with, Michael, what were some of the aspects of this character that you were excited to explore on screen? Also, how is Domingo Chavez similar and different from Jack Ryan?

Michael Peña: I mean, I got to be honest with you, there’s not a lot of similarities. He’s like this cerebral kind of a person and he figures things out. I think Chavez is more of a fill-player. He fills out the situations and I think that he has a lot more experience, especially in battle, so to speak. For me, the interesting part of it, which was difficult as well, he’s not a character that emotes very much, and it’s more about the amount of focus that he has on the task at hand. So he’s that kind of guy. For the most part, what you see in the series is somebody who’s very motivated, but very focused on one thing, and he’s not very animated.

MF: Louis, your character, Chao, is a family man but also a ruthless businessman, and he seems torn between the two. Can you talk about that?

Louis Ozawa: Absolutely. Family comes first with him. But he’s a self-made man and he’s not a unambitious man. I think ultimately his hubris, his ambition, is a bit of his downfall, too. So it’s a delicious combination to kind of play off of. He’s got his ambitions and that that’s at odds with his family. I think he’s similar to Jack Ryan in a sense that he’s always thinking two, three, four steps ahead of everyone. He thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, and maybe he’s not. It’s been a joy to play this role. I was saying earlier that I get to scratch every itch that an actor has, in this role.

MF: Michael, what was it like for you working with John Krasinski on this series?

MP: I mean, he had a lot of input on the writing and the directing, and of course the producing of it all. Sometimes it’s interesting because when you’re doing something with a person that’s producing whatever it is that you’re doing, you see them and they’re looking at you. You’re like, “Is he acting with me or is he looking at how I’m doing it?” So it can make you a little bit self-conscious about it. Because he’s like, “Right, right. Can you do that again?” So, it’s literally the director just right there.

MF: Finally, Louis, what was your experience like working with John Krasinski?

LO: Well, John is fairly hands-on being a director, so, as the executive producer, has a lot of creative input into every scene that we’re in. But he’s also an actor. So, one of my most emotional scenes that I had, he gave me the space. He said, “Hey, we need to give Louis a few minutes to be there. Whatever you need in this moment, if you need to call your wife and talk to her.” He was recollecting kind of moments from ‘A Quiet Place’ and how he got into that place. He was like, “I just got on the phone with my wife,” which is weird because she was on set. But anyway, he was like, “Yeah, you can get on the phone with your kids, whatever it takes.” So I appreciate both the fact that he is a director and an actor.

  • ‘Hunters’ Season 2 Interviews: Logan Lerman and Josh Radnor

    9qv1ysXC

Premiering on Prime Video on January 13th is the second season of the popular series ‘Hunters,’ which was created by David Weil.

Set in 1977 New York City, the series follows a group of elite Nazi hunters led by Jonah Heidelbaum (Logan Lerman), who discover that several escaped Nazi officers are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the United States.

Season two picks up after the events of season one, where Jonah’s mentor Meyer Offerman (Al Pacino) betrayed the team, it was revealed that The Colonel (Lena Olin) is really Eva Braun, and that Hitler is still alive!

In addition to Lerman, Pacino and Olin, the cast also includes Jerrika Hinton, Josh Radnor, Greg Austin, Saul Rubinek, Carol Kane, Tiffany Boone, Louis Ozawa, Kate Mulvany, and Dylan Baker.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Logan Lerman and Josh Radnor about their work on ‘Hunters’ Season 2, reuniting with the cast, putting the team back together, and hunting Hitler.

Josh Radnor as Lonny Flash, Jerrika Hinton as Millie Morris, and Logan Lerman as Jonah Heidelbaum in Prime Video's 'Hunters' Season 2.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Lerman, Radnor, Tiffany Boone, Louis Ozawa, and Greg Austin.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you both talk about where we will find your characters when Season 2 begins?

Logan Lerman: Jonah is a very different character at the beginning of this season. He’s dealing with the trauma of past events that have changed him, he’s burdened with the responsibility of it, and he’s also leading a double life. He’s trying to be a person, and he’s seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

He sees that the end is near and that he can just go back to, hopefully being a person again. Just a regular old guy and having love in his life, being in school, and just living. But then he gets sucked back in and he’s having to manage his responsibilities as a hunter with his desire to lead a normal life.

Josh Radnor: Season two does take place two years after season one, but there’s also been a couple of years gap between seasons one and two for the viewer. So, in those two years, the hunters went off on a mission to Europe that seemed to have gone disastrously poorly. Lonnie was sober in season one but he’s fallen off the wagon. We find him in really not a good spot. His demons have got a hold of him again. He’s heartsick over an ill-fated romance with one of the hunters.

It seems like his career is actually going well, which is not always the best thing to happen when someone’s in the grip of addiction. So, it’s kind of like a recipe for disaster for him. He’s starting in a really low place and the hunters have kind of disbanded. They’re all over the place. So, once the team gets reassembled and this mission takes place, he’s able to pull himself somewhat out of this nosedive. But he starts in a really tough place.

MF: Logan, can you talk about Jonah’s partnership with Millie (Jerrika Hinton) and putting the team back together for this new mission?

LL: Jonah and Millie really spearhead the mission, the movement to execute their mission given in the first episode. A big part of this show is that element of getting the team back together, which has been done in action films and things like that. It’s fun playing with that element of this story. At the end of the day, this is an action, entertainment adventure kind of show. Those things are so well executed by David Weil and the creative team that we just got to go in there and have fun with it as actors.

MF: Josh, as an actor yourself, is it fun playing another actor and having the opportunity to poke fun at your own profession?

JR: It’s the best. I’m from Ohio, I’m from the Midwest. We’re taught to be very modest. It’s also fun to play this kind of mix. He’s this great mix of narcissism and insecurity. He’s both self-loathing and self-aggrandizing. He is grandiose and he is filled with shame. So, there’s all these great kind of tense inner conflicts that he has going on, and it’s fun to poke fun at actors.

MF: Finally, what has it been like for both of you to return for season two and reunite with the rest of the cast?

LL: It was great. I love these actors. I love them as people, my teammates, my friends, and my family now. So, getting together with them and getting to play with these characters and their dynamics and relationships, it’s just a joy. We had a really good time, all of us.

JR: We had such a good time and we all missed each other. For such a dark show, the themes of it are so dark and what we have to do is so crazy and violent. We just have a great time and we really missed each other. It was great because we also got to go to Prague and shoot for a month. So, it’s great when you get a job that you’re thrilled to have, but a bonus is, I love everyone I’m working with and they’re flying us to Europe to shoot. There are a lot of great things about this season.
