‘The Monkey’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters February 21st is ‘The Monkey,’ directed by Osgood Perkins and starring Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, Elijah Wood, and Adam Scott.

    Initial Thoughts

Theo James in 'The Monkey'. Photo: Neon.
Theo James in ‘The Monkey’. Photo: Neon.

If you’re a Stephen King fan, put away any preconceptions about what ‘The Monkey’ is. While it’s based on a 1980 short story by the horror master (which can now be found in his 1985 collection, ‘Skeleton Crew’), this adaptation by writer-director Osgood Perkins takes only the bare bones of the plot and expands it from there in some decidedly different directions.

The tone of the film is also quite distinct from the story: while the latter plays the concept straight, Perkins has apparently ascertained that a straight horror movie about a toy monkey that kills people might not make the cut.

Instead, Perkins takes the monkey’s supernatural power and the havoc it wreaks to some truly bonkers extremes. While the movie’s ultimate theme dovetails with that of the story to a certain degree, it arrives there via a barrage of exceptionally, absurdly gruesome kills and set pieces that are often as hilarious as they are unsettling.

    Story and Direction

(L to R) Theo James and director Osgood Perkins on the set of ‘The Monkey’. Photo: Neon.

‘The Monkey’ starts with a prologue in which a pilot, Pete Shelburn (Adam Scott in a delightful cameo), visits a pawn shop to get rid of the toy monkey that he picked up somewhere in his travels. As we find out right away, every time the monkey gets wound up and bangs on its toy drum with the drumsticks clutched in its paws, somebody – or even multiple somebodies – dies, often in horrible ways.

Flash forward to meeting Pete’s young twin sons (both played by Christian Convery), who find the monkey stashed in a closet among their long-gone dad’s other possessions. The boys, who live with their sweet but slightly eccentric mom (Tatiana Maslany), are opposites: Hal is reserved, cerebral, and thoughtful, while Bill is outgoing, brash, and dedicated to humiliating his brother every chance he gets.

Hal and Bill quickly find out two dreadful things about the monkey: once it starts banging on its drum, the only person safe from harm is the person who winds it up…and no matter who you wish to die, the monkey ultimately picks its own victim or victims. This leads to an unfortunate turn of events that end with the two siblings throwing the thing down a well and assuming it’s gone for the next 20 years.

Nicco Del Rio as a pastor in 'The Monkey'. Photo: Neon.
Nicco Del Rio as a pastor in ‘The Monkey’. Photo: Neon.

But it’s not, of course. Now an adult (played by Theo James), Hal gets a call from his long-estranged brother (also played by James) telling him that the monkey has resurfaced and that Hal must go back to their hometown, find and destroy it. Hal himself is a failure, working at a convenience store and keeping himself largely distant from the teenage son he dearly loves in fear of the boy somehow coming into the orbit of the monkey – which is exactly what happens, as Hal gets the call from his brother right in the middle of his annual road trip with his distant, understandably hurt kid (Colin O’Brien).

It’s not too long before we understand that the monkey is a metaphor for death – in all its random, unexpected, abrupt, horrifying glory. And while this is a somber realization, it’s presented in terms that border on the surreal. People just don’t drop dead in ‘The Monkey’; they explode, are eviscerated, incinerated, perforated, and mutilated in the kind of bizarre “accidental” deaths that make the famous kills in movies like ‘The Omen’ and ‘Final Destination’ look like, well, child’s play.

The combination of existential dread, gallows humor, and almost cartoonish gore makes for a tricky tightrope for Perkins to walk, but he mostly handles it well. ‘The Monkey’ is short and feels a bit thin sometimes, but the director is willing to push himself in new directions after the mostly dead serious atmosphere of his earlier films (although ‘Longlegs’ began his experimentation with humor thanks to the usual unhinged greatness from Nicolas Cage). If the lesson that Hal learns in ‘The Monkey’ doesn’t resonate as forcefully as it could, with Perkins unable to resist one last bloody sight gag, the movie makes up for it by being a rollicking good time and that hardest of genre mashups to pull off: an effective horror-comedy.

    The Cast

(L to R) Laura Mennell, Elijah Wood and Theo James in 'The Monkey'. Photo: Neon.
(L to R) Laura Mennell, Elijah Wood and Theo James in ‘The Monkey’. Photo: Neon.

In a movie where a number of performances are intentionally exaggerated or campy, some of the individual work may seem too broad or fall a bit short. In other instances – like a subplot involving a local small-time crook (Rohan Campbell) whom Bill hires to steal the money – the script itself lets the actors down. That subplot actually adds little to the overall movie and, to some degree, drags it down for a stretch.

On the other hand, kudos must go to Theo James and Christian Convery for their excellent portrayal of the Shelburn twins as boys and men. The 15-year-old Convery is especially adept at encompassing the trauma and heartbreak that leads them to become two very damaged men, and James takes over from there with an equally well-rounded dual performance (the choice to differentiate the two by giving Bill a horrific haircut isn’t a good one, undermining the character a bit).

The movie’s scene-stealer, however, is Tatiana Maslany as their mother, Lois. Though only in a few scenes, Maslany exudes warmth, patience, wisdom, and love, with her own underlying layer of hurt and disappointment. She’s also frank with the boys, especially in a scene where they discuss the nature of death. The ‘She-Hulk’ star is always a welcome screen presence and we only wish we could see more of her in this film.

    Final Thoughts

A scene from 'The Monkey'. Photo: Neon.

This is a new kind of film for Osgood Perkins, following the relatively somber atmosphere of films like ‘The Blackcoat’s Daughter’ and ‘Gretel and Hansel.’ He doesn’t always handle the balance of tone effectively, so while ‘The Monkey’ is a barrel of fun for much of its relatively brief running time, it’s a bit less memorable than some of the filmmaker’s earlier works.

It’s still a good time though, and he still manages to create some interesting characters and even give them some moments of profundity and empathy amid all the carnage and flying viscera. As far as Stephen King adaptations go, it’s a nice twist on a story that harkens, to some degree, back to the EC Comics that inspired the author when he was a kid. In the end, the message is a universal one: death comes for us all, banging its little drum to let us know our time is up.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with writer and director Osgood Perkins and Theo James about their work on ‘The Monkey’, developing the adaptation, adding humor to the screenplay, James’ approach to his dual roles, and working with young actor Christian Convery.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews.

Moviefone: To begin with, Osgood, can you talk about the challenges of adapting a Stephen King story for the big screen and your choice to add humor and levity to the film?

Osgood Perkins: When I was given the privilege, because that’s what it is, to work off his vibration, never mind trying to copy a story or be faithful or something like that. But just trying to be aligned with such a titan of creativity and such a pillar of culture was just this amazing opportunity. More than adapting the specific story, I wanted to conjure the feeling I get from Stephen King or what my indelible impressions are. I always found his stuff to be so fun, sort of playful, smart, musical, melancholic and about families, fathers, children, life and death, and sort of much more than just a bunch of monsters or a bunch of killers. So, I wanted to bring the comedic, the joy, the entertainment value to the front.

MF: Theo, can you talk about the challenges of playing dual roles and your specific approach to playing both Hal and Bill?

Theo James: I mean, it is a gift really. Actors like to see more of themselves, because they’re essentially egotists, but these were two very different characters who the core of them is endemically different. To start from that arena, you can make bold choices. So, with Hal, he’s a very internal person. He’s a shaken, downbeat kind of 80s Tom Hanks. As a result, his body language, his posture is more stooped, he’s more questioning with his gaze, and he’s not sure of himself. He stutters over words. With Bill, it’s the opposite of that. He’s maniacal, he’s ego led, but he’s essentially a child in a man’s body who’s looking desperately for love. All that brings itself to a level of toxicity and madness, which with someone like Oz, you feel comfortable to try stuff. Some of it works and some of it doesn’t. But at least in that space you can find little pieces that are interesting that might not have been there otherwise.

A scene from 'The Monkey'. Photo: Neon.
A scene from ‘The Monkey’. Photo: Neon.

MF: Finally, Theo, since the story is told in two different timelines, did you work with young actor Christian Convery to make sure that both of your performances of Hal and Bill matched?

TJ: Not really in a way, because I think you need to let Christian interpret the character in his own way and do his thing. I need the room to interpret my characters in the same way and not be hampered by certain things. We decided early on we didn’t want to get into a realm of prosthetics or a particular kind of makeup or the way they looked or vocal or body language tics. So, we weren’t hampered by that. In a way it was nice to just let each other do our thing. But the person who’s guiding the ship is obviously Oz, so he can make sure that we are on the right page, but also with children and adults, there’s a huge evolution that happens between them. So, we didn’t need to worry too much about that.

    • It’s a new version of the 1992 thriller.
    • Michelle Garza Cervera is directing the movie.

Welcome to the latest chapter of remake theater, where a studio digs a recognizable title out of its archives and intends to give it a new coat of cinematic paint, with fresh talent involved.

In this case, the company is 20th Century Studios, and the movie is 1992 psychological thriller ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,’ which helped give Rebecca De Mornay a big career boost when she starred as the vengeful Peyton Flanders, who wreaks havoc on a family.

Now, the new take on the story will see ‘Longlegs’ and ‘It FollowsMaika Monroe starring.

The 1992 original, directed by Curtis Hanson, co-starred Annabella Sciorra. Amanda Silver, these days better known for her work on the ‘Planet of the Apes’ movies (including this year’s ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’), wrote the script.

It follows Flanders (De Mornay), a twisted widow (whose dead husband was, er, a sex offender) who, distraught over losing her own baby, insinuates herself into a family (of a woman who was one of her husband’s victims) as their nanny, with the ultimate goal of taking the kids and the husband for herself.

What new twists and turns the new version have in store have yet to be revealed, but we can’t imagine audiences would be impressed with a straightforward re-telling.

Who else is working on the new ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’?

Alongside Monroe, the creative team includes scriptwriter Micah Bloomberg, who previously worked on 2022’s ‘Sanctuary’ and created TV series ‘Homecoming’.

In the director’s chair this time is Michelle Garza Cervera, who directed the likes of ‘Huesera: The Bone Woman.’

She was also selected for the 2023 Sundance Momentum Fellowship and was nominated for Breakthrough Director at the 2023 Gotham Independent Film Awards.

As we previously mentioned, Monroe is the star of this year’s biggest indie hit, ‘Longlegs’, which was directed Oz Perkins and co-starred Nicolas Cage.

She broke out big with David Robert Mitchell’s ‘It Follows,’ and was also seen in ‘Significant Other,’ ‘Watcher,’ ‘Villains’ and ‘Honey Boy.’

    • Nicolas Cage is playing John Madden in a new movie called ‘Madden’.
    • David O. Russell wrote the script and will direct.
    • It’ll follow Madden from his 1970s days and beyond.

Nicolas Cage is on a bit of a hot streak at the moment. Between showing some serious self-awareness (and self-deprecation) for ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ and logging some of the best performances of his recent career in the likes of ‘Pig’, ‘Dream Scenario’ and this year’s creepy winner ‘Longlegs’, he’s putting in the work.

And a new movie will offer a fresh, considerable challenge: Cage will play real life NFL icon John Madden for director David O. Russell in ‘Madden’.

With a script by Russell (based on earlier work from Cambron Clark), the exact details of what ‘Madden’ will cover remain a little indistinct at the moment.

But there is certainly a lot to choose from. Madden was a star player in high school, and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, only for injury to curtail his rookie season.

Instead, he went on to earn a degree in teaching and put his skills/experience to good use as a coach, going on to lead the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl and a win in 1977.

Madden became known as one of the best coaches in the sport’s history, but his all-consuming passion and commitment wore on him, and he retired for health reasons.

Still, a hugely successful second chapter dawned as courted by the fledgling gaming company Electronic Arts to be the front man for its Madden NFL multi-player video game. Madden had never played a video game, but it turned into an outlet where he could lend his knowledge and help the masses better understand the gridiron.

The game has long been a sensation –– even with its inspiration dying in 2021, it continues to this day as a favorite of players and fans.

And beyond even that, Madden also became famous as a beloved commentator on the game he loved so much, his enthusiasm pouring from the screen, and his habit of scribbling on the screen making him a firm favorite among viewers.

Here’s what Russell said about the casting news in a statement:

“Nicolas Cage, one of our greatest and most original actors, will portray the best of the American spirit of originality, fun, and determination in which anything is possible as beloved national legend John Madden. Together with the ferocious style, focus, and inspired individualism of Al Davis, owner of the underdog Oakland Raiders, the feature will be about the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.”

Russell himself is something of a controversial figure, his successful directing career also marked by criticisms of his attitude to women and other groups. He’s also been known for his mercurial behavior on set, infamously clashing with George Clooney on ‘Three Kings’.

It left such a mark on the actor that even now he won’t work with Russell, commenting in a recent interview:

“It’s not just like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go do a really good film, like ‘Three Kings’, and I’m going to have a miserable f*** like David O Russell making my life hell. Making every person in the crew’s life hell.’ ”

Let’s hope Cage has a better time of it.

When will the new David O. Russell/Nicolas Cage movie ‘Madden’ be in theaters?

Amazon/MGM Studios is backing the drama, but it has yet to receive a release date.

Opening in theaters July 12th is ‘Longlegs,’ directed by Osgood Perkins and starring Maika Monroe, Nicolas Cage, Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt, and Kiernan Shipka.

    Initial Thoughts

Writer-director Osgood Perkins has staked out his own personal corner of the horror genre with his first three films, merging elements of fantasy, fairy tales, and the Gothic into the feverish narratives of ‘The Blackcoat’s Daughter,’ ‘I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House,’ and ‘Gretel & Hansel.’ His unsettling new film, ‘Longlegs,’ still has some of that fairy tale flavor: its protagonist lives in a log cabin in the woods and some of the action centers around a mother and daughter living in a remote house like two characters out of the Brothers Grimm.

But ‘Longlegs’ also channels the Satanic Panic horror movies of the 1970s (more effectively, perhaps, than Ti West does with the films of the ‘80s in ‘MaXXXine’), as well as more recent psychological mind-benders like ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and the underseen Japanese shocker ‘Cure,’ while giving us less of a fractured fairy tale and more of a waking nightmare. Set in rural 1990s locales that seem both drained of life and susceptible to sudden, ugly violence, while featuring a performance from Nicolas Cage that worms its way into your brain, ‘Longlegs’ is perhaps not outright scary – but genuinely unnerving.

10 families die under frighteningly similar circumstances over 30 years: a seemingly normal, family-values dad gruesomely slaughters his wife and family before killing himself. Two clues tie the scenes together: at each is left a card written in Zodiac-like ciphers from a person calling themselves ‘Longlegs,’ and each family has a daughter whose birthday falls on the 14th of that month. But there is no indication – indeed no evidence at all – that Longlegs physically participates in the crimes.

Enter socially awkward, super-repressed FBI Special Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), whose seeming flashes of intuition – or perhaps something more paranormal – about serial killings gets her assigned to the case while also marking her as a cross between Clarice Starling from ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and Will Graham of ‘Red Dragon/Manhunter.’ Overseeing her is Special Agent Carter (Blair Underwood), a decent family man with whom she strikes up a mentor/mentee relationship. The case quickly turns personal for Lee when Longlegs leaves one of his cards at her house, as the clock ticks down toward the 14th of the month when another slaughter is all but assured.

    Blair Underwood in 'Longlegs'.

That’s all we’ll say about the plot of ‘Longlegs,’ save for the fact that the movie is less about the narrative and more about the creeping, oozing sense of dread that permeates every frame, whether it’s the widescreen present-day shots that make the viewer acutely uncomfortable about all that empty space encroaching on the characters, or the square-framed, faded, home movie-style flashbacks that become ever more claustrophobic. Perkins also lets sound designer Eugenio Battaglia rip with a mosaic of static-haunted phone lines, strange thumps and creaks, and random scratching noises, occasionally punctuated by a rock song.

The end result of all this is a constant feeling that something is way, way off, that the movie is observing its characters as if they’re trapped in a dream and don’t know it, all while ominous forces build up just outside their – and our – line of sight. When the revelations about what it all means do come in the third act, explained as if in a fairy tale, they come a little too thick and fast, stretching credibility and perhaps not quite living up to the sense of malevolence that preceded them. But Perkins also leaves the film just open-ended enough at the end to let the viewer walk out feeling off-balance and still unsettled.

    The Cast

    Maika Monroe in 'Longlegs'.

Maika Monroe has become something of a genre queen thanks to her roles in films like ‘The Guest,’ ‘Watcher,’ and of course her breakthrough horror outing ‘It Follows.’ As Lee Harker, she’s clearly paying homage to Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling, right down to the color of her hair and her dynamic with Blair Underwood’s empathetic Agent Carter. But Harker is more repressed and unable to interact normally with people than Clarice ever was; she can barely make small talk with a little girl who’s clearly impressed with her FBI credentials. Monroe ably portrays a woman who is driven to succeed as a law enforcement agent while not quite able to leave her childhood behind or understand her full talents.

Lauren Acala and Alicia Witt in 'Longlegs'.

A lot of this becomes clearer when we meet Ruth, Harker’s mother, played by a startling (and underseen in recent years) Alicia Witt. Her hair long and flat, her expression both wide-eyed and vacant, Ruth drifts through her crammed hoarder house like a ghost, repeatedly telling Lee to say her prayers because they “protect us from the Devil.” Witt is excellent, with she and Monroe developing a credibly sympathetic yet clearly damaged mother-daughter relationship that gets more layers peeled away as the film progresses.

Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage in 'Longlegs'.

And then there’s Nicolas Cage as Longlegs. The film almost sets up expectations by telling you in the opening credits that he’s playing the title role, and Cage – in his own distinctive way – doesn’t disappoint. His own hair colorless and stringy, his face buried in prosthetics and pale white makeup, Cage is like a bizarre cross between Jame Gumb and Pennywise. His voice climbing into higher pitches as he speaks, bursting either into song or a cackling laugh, and his hands continually framing his own face with seemingly a will of their own, Cage’s Longlegs is a highly original creation. The fact that Cage is more or less acting in his own movie only makes his appearances in the film more dream-like and surreal. Best of all, Perkins knows that the best horror is left unexplained: while Longlegs’ own scheme does get eventually revealed, we are thankfully left without a tiresome backstory of how he got there. He just exists.

    Final Thoughts

With his four efforts to date, Osgood Perkins has clearly shown a passion for and knowledge of horror that puts him at the forefront of the current crop of genre filmmakers. He has yet to make a truly great horror film, but his work shows ambition even with its flaws and sticking points (next for him is an adaptation – his first – of the Stephen King story ‘The Monkey’).

‘Longlegs’ may be his best-realized creation to date, and even as it references other films and eras, it remixes them into something weird, personal, and original. It’s not the scariest movie ever made (as some advance hype has ludicrously suggested) and it doesn’t pay off as successfully as we’d like, but the nightmarish ‘Longlegs’ will still have you looking over your shoulder, into the dark spaces where repressed memories, religious mania, and the otherworldly all meet.

‘Longlegs’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

MF: Osgood, what would you say to prepare an audience for this theatrical experience?

Osgood Perkins: Have a good time. It’s meant to be an enjoyable experience. I know that people have been freaked out and panicked by this movie, but I really thought I was making something fun.

    Maika Monroe in 'Longlegs'.

MF: Maika, can you talk about your approach to playing Lee and the challenges of playing a character as layered as she is?

MM: I mean Lee is very different from me, from who I am, and I thought that that would be a very interesting challenge, sort of removing myself completely from this role. But I think I began with sort of going back. Going back to her childhood, I think that that is very telling. She obviously went through some very severe trauma, and I think that’s kind of what makes her who she is and how she goes through the world. Then, I think a lot was figured out on set. One of the first days we were filming was the scene with my partner. We were meant to go out and knock on doors, but we found the way that she walked and moved and the awkwardness.

MF: Finally, Osgood, can you talk about developing the screenplay and the themes that you wanted to explore as a filmmaker?

OP: Well, the central idea is that parents tell lies and stories to their children. That parents oversee the perception of a child and what a delicate responsibility that is. Sometimes looking to protect the child, a story can be written, a cover story can be put up, a scaffolding can be built. That was what the movie was about for me. Then it just became honestly kind of a cheeky trick of, well, how do I get into a movie in a way that people are going to want to follow where I’m going? So, using ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ as just this recognizable touch tone that you know, “It’s a woman detective, she’s out of her element, and there’s a killer that they can’t find.” So, I think that the idea was to really sort of tenderize the audiences’ consciousness and awareness and readiness for a thing that they thought it was going to be and then of course, it’s not that.

    • A movie based on Stephen King short story ‘The Monkey’ has been shot.
    • Theo James, Tatiana Maslany and Elijah Wood are in the lead roles.
    • Osgood Perkins directed the movie.

Normally when there is a casting story to report, it’s because a movie is in the midst of coming together –– occasionally, word on actors’ involvement is even sometimes leaked so as to nudge negotiations in a certain direction.

But then there are the other cases, ones that almost serve as a “surprise! New finished movie!” story, with the film already in the can. And for ‘The Monkey’, that’s certainly the case, with production completed and deals reportedly made to sell it to distributors, at least according to Deadline.

As for the cast? That is led by Theo James, Tatiana Maslany and Elijah Wood.

The new movie adapts –– as so many projects these days seem to –– a Stephen King story. In this case, it’s a short story that was first published as a booklet included in Gallery magazine in 1980.

King revised the story for publication in his 1985 collection ‘Skeleton Crew’. The narrative follows young brothers, Peter and Dennis who discover a cymbal-banging monkey in the attic of their great-uncle’s house. As if that wasn’t scary enough –– seriously, have you seen some of those things? –– they discover its sinister history. Originally discovered by their father, Hal, it turned out to be cursed, and every time it clapped its cymbals together, someone near Hal died.

In the movie, the brothers will soon find that people around them are dying, and attempt to dispose of the toy, then grow up and apart. But when a string of mysterious deaths begins, they must reunite to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.
