Moviefone: To begin with, Natalie, can you talk about your approach to playing Maddie, a character who is really discovering who she is for herself as the series unfolds?

Natalie Portman: Well, I think that something that’s exciting with Maddie is she’s someone who’s bottled up her personality for so long that it kind of explodes and then she kind of overdoes everything. So, it was exciting to have that kind of exploration. It was very different because I’ve never done a series before, so I’ve never had that amount of space to explore a character. Alma created incredible space for us to improvise, find detail, play, and it was fun. Just with creating the character and with other actors who also had created these very detailed characters, she would leave the end of takes open that we could just keep improvising back and forth. There were some treasures that came out of that, and beautiful moments that she just allowed us to have. You must have some breathing room to find those things.

MF: Moses, can you talk about your approach to playing Cleo and her motivation to protect her family and give them a better life?

Moses Ingram: I mean, I don’t have children of my own, but I can see in mothers around me, my own mother, that you always want yours to have better than you did. I think that’s certainly the thing that drives her. When life is hard, people make decisions that other people might not understand. I think that’s kind of the position that Cleo is in. But she does it for her kids, for sure.

MF: Maddie and Cleo are completely different people, but at the same time are very similar in a lot of ways. Can you talk about that?

MI: I mean, women in the 60s, they couldn’t even have credit cards without a man attached. Trying to make very simple decisions like getting rid of your car, for example. Things like that make it very hard to get a leg up on your own. I think that’s where these two women meet, and I think that’s where the universality lies between the two of them. Obviously, it’s different because of the intersectionality of it all, but alike and different. I think there’s space for many women to see themselves here.

MF: Finally, Natalie, can you talk about working on set with director Alma Har’el and collaborating with her to execute her vision for this project?

NP: Alma is extraordinary. I mean, I was in awe of her every day. She comes with full energy, full positivity, full creativity, a very precise and beautiful vision that she communicates well, creating space for other people to participate and collaborate, and then managed to do that every day for months and months and months and months. She wrote everything. I mean, she had a team that she wrote with, but she led the writing. She directed every episode. She cut everything. I mean, she’s a boss. I am in awe of her and love her dearly.

The story, which comes from creators Felix Barrett and Dennis Kelly, centers on a mysterious island not far from Britain, where a group of islanders live. Law’s character, Sam, will find the island in the first half of “The Third Day,” and Harris’s character, Helen, will arrive in the second. Woody Harrelson is ready to go on the run as the infamous psychologist Timothy Leary. He is set to star in and executive produce the limited series “The Most Dangerous Man in America,” Deadline reports. The project is an adaptation of Bill Minutaglio and Steven L. Davis’s nonfiction book of the same name.

Luke Davies will adapt the story. It centers on Leary and his 1970 escape from prison. The ex Harvard professor and LSD proponent had been imprisoned for drug possession before he managed to break out. Leary went on the run, instigating a global manhunt.

Harrelson hasn’t starred in as many TV series as films in recent years, but the Emmy winner’s breakout role was on the iconic show “Cheers.” Additionally, he appeared in the special “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s All in the Family and The Jeffersons” in May. On the film side, his recent credits include “The Highwaymen,” “Venom,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and more.

The strange story of Theranos and its now-notorious founder, Elizabeth Holmes, will be told again.

Hulu is in the midst of closing a deal for the limited series “The Dropout,” Deadline reports. Holmes will be played by Kate McKinnon, who is also executive producing the Fox Searchlight TV project.

There will reportedly be between six and 10 episodes in the miniseries, and it will be based on the ABC News/ABC Radio podcast of the same name. The “Dropout” podcast looked at Holmes, her wild success with Theranos, and then her subsequent fall from grace. Rebecca Jarvis, the host and creator of the podcast, is set to executive produce alongside McKinnon. Taylor Dunn and Victoria Thompson will serve as producers.

Holmes’s story has drawn a lot of attention in recent years. She was at one time hailed as a revolutionary in medicine and technology, but has since been embroiled in scandal. The ex-CEO was indicted in June on multiple counts of committing wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. She has pleaded not guilty, and her case is pending.

Portraying Holmes will certainly be an interesting job for McKinnon. The project adds to the two-time Emmy-winning actress’s many film and TV roles. She recently appeared in the 2018 comedy flick “The Spy Who Dumped Me” and is one of current stars of “Saturday Night Live.”

HBO’s upcoming limited series “Chernobyl” arrives in March, so the premium network has unveiled the official trailer.

The five-part miniseries centers on the Chernobyl disaster, a 1986 power plant explosion in part of the Soviet Union that is now Ukraine. The accident was catastrophic, as the preview shows. It highlights the magnitude of the tragedy and shows how people were affected.

“Every atom of uranium is like a bullet, penetrating everything in its path — metals, concrete, flesh,” one character explains. “Now, Chernobyl holds over 3 trillion of these bullets. Some of them will not stop firing for 50,000 years.”

Chernobyl remains one of the world’s worst human-made disasters, so needless to say, the trailer is both horrifying and heartbreaking. Watch below.

Showtime’s “Your Honor” has locked down Bryan Cranston.

The “Breaking Bad” alum will return to TV as the star of the upcoming limited series, Variety reports. He’ll also executive produce the project, which is based on the Israeli series “Kvodo.”

The miniseries is said to be a legal thriller. Cranston’s character is reportedly a respected judge in New Orleans. However, when his son is involved in hit-and-run, there will be lies, deceit, and tough choices. It has “gut-wrenching suspense, raw emotion, and moral complexity,” according to Showtime Networks President Gary Levine.

Levine praised the show’s new star, calling him “one of the planet’s finest actors.” Cranston certainly has had memorable roles. Before “Breaking Bad,” he starred in Fox’s “Malcom in the Middle,” as well as Amazon’s “Sneaky Pete” after. Cranston also has numerous films on his resume, including “The Upside,” “Why Him?,” “Trumbo,” and more.

Peter Moffat will be the “Your Honor” showrunner, and he’ll also write multiple episodes. Cranston’s fellow executive producers include King Size Productions’ Robert and Michelle King, Scripted World’s Liz Glotzer, Alon Aranya, and Rob Golenberg, and James Degus. CBS Television Studios is set to produce.

The series is slated to begin production this year. A release date for the series has not yet been announced.

    20th Century Fox

HBO is moving forward with a project from actor Channing Tatum and director Jean-Marc Vallée.

The premium network has ordered the limited series “Gorilla and the Bird,” Deadline reports. It is based on Zack McDermott’s 2017 memoir of the same name. The “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” star is executive producing through Free Association, while Vallée is doing so through crazyrose. Meanwhile, Big Beach and HBO are co-producing.

The book centers on McDermott’s struggle to deal with bipoloar disorder in his 20s and his mother’s determination to help him through a psychotic break. The author is involved as a co-executive producer. Meanwhile, Bryan Sipe has adapted the script for series and is also set to executive produce.

Vallée is directing from Sipe’s script, which pairs them again after they previously worked together on the 2015 film “Demolition” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts. The upcoming limited series also reunites Vallée with HBO; he is a director and executive producer of the network’s acclaimed series “Sharp Objects” and “Big Little Lies.” In fact, knowing he was involved is what ultimately got HBO to green light the project, according to Deadline.

  • Gal Gadot May Star in Showtime Limited Series About Actress and Inventor Hedy Lamarr

Gal Gadot May Star in Showtime Limited Series About Actress and Inventor Hedy Lamarr

    Gal Gadot in Criminal
    Summit Entertainment

The last few years have brought us plenty of Gal Gadot on the big screen, and she may soon grace our TVs, too.

The “Wonder Woman: 1984” star is reportedly close to reaching a deal for a Showtime limited series from Endeavor Content. She would star as the protagonist, Hedy Lamarr, the actress and inventor, Deadline reports.

It sounds as though the project is a special one for the actress, who would executive produce alongside her husband, producer Jaron Varsano; “The Affair” co-creator Sarah Treem; and Warren Littlefield (“The Handmaid’s Tale”). Deadline reports that Gadot wanted to bring Lamarr’s story to screen, and Treem came up with how to tackle the project. Treem hasn’t reached a deal yet, either, but she is reportedly in the negotiations phase.

The story is said to follow Lamarr’s “life and career,” per Deadline. That should certainly offer a wealth of material. The actress and inventor was born in what was then Czechoslovakia, and she became a film star there before escaping her marriage and moving to France. Later, she ended up in Hollywood after meeting the then-MGM studio head, Louis B. Mayer, in London and again found acting success. And as if she didn’t accomplish enough, she managed to co-develop technology that was a precursor to GPS and WiFi.

It sounds like it could be quite the limited series, especially with Gadot on board.
