    • Laura Linney is being linked to a role in DC/HBO series ‘Lanterns.’
    • There is speculation that she’s playing Carol Ferris.
    • Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre star in the new show.

Though it already has an impressive cast, new DC Studios/HBO comic book-based series ‘Lanterns’ appears to have gotten an extra shot of dramatic power.

According to reporter Jeff Sneider, Laura Linney –– who worked with the new show’s co-creator Chris Mundy on ‘Ozark’ is aboard the show.

No official confirmation has emerged yet, but Sneider is already speculating that she could be playing Carol Ferris, the love of Lantern Hal Jordan’s life (that role is being brought to screens by Kyle Chandler) and someone who ultimately –– in the comics, at least –– becomes the villain known as Star Sapphire.

That’s all still rumor and conjecture at this point, but we do know that Aaron Pierre is co-starring alongside Chandler as fellow Lantern John Stewart.

What’s the story of ‘Green Lantern’ in comics form?

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps from DC Comics. Photo: DC Comics.

Created in its first incarnation (a Lantern named Alan Scott) in 1940 by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger, the concept of the ‘Green Lantern’ comics is that of a super-powered, police force, battling evil doers with rings that allow them to channel energy into different forms. There are many Lanterns, who patrol the known and unknown universe.

‘Green Lantern’s history on screen has been seriously mixed. Though different takes on the character have flourished in animated movies and series, their live-action counterparts have had less luck. Ryan Reynolds played the Hal Jordan version in a 2011 movie that didn’t triumph at the box office, and there have been fleeting glimpses on the small screen.

Even Zack Snyder didn’t manage to realize his chosen Lantern –– John Stewart –– in his mammoth Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League’. Despite shooting a cameo with Wayne T. Carr as Stewart, Warners asked him to remove the character because of the studio’s own plans. In the end, Snyder swapped in Martian Manhunter.

And the show had been in development before Gunn and Safran made their big DC Studios announcement. Back in 2020, ‘Pride and Prejudice and ZombiesSeth Grahame-Smith hopped aboard to write and run what HBO Max (as the streaming service was then called) was picturing its most expensive series to date, a space-set ‘Green Lantern’ drama whose focus would be the Alan Scott and Guy Gardner iterations of the character among the first and most popular versions.

‘Lanterns’ will follow the Chandler and Pierre characters, as new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are described in the latest official synopsis as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

So, think ‘True Detective’ meets ‘Green Lantern’…

Here’s Chris Mundy on the tone for the show:

“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama –– rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building –– that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion. The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

But there will be some powerful antagonism involved, as Ulrich Thomsen is playing Sinestro a former Green Lantern who turned rogue and is described as ruthless yet charming.

His manipulative nature drives his enduring obsession with his former mentee, Hal Jordan. The character was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and first appeared in the comic book “Green Lantern, Volume 2, #56” released in 1961.

The cast also includes ‘No Country for Old Man’s Kelly Macdonald, ’12 Years a Slave’ actor Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan (who appeared in (‘The Night Of’), Jason Ritter and the aforementioned Thomsen.

In breaking news, Deadline brings word that Chris Coy is also part of the ensemble.

In a guest starring role, Coy will be the new character of ‘Waylon Sanders,’ an intelligent survivor… or a nervous truck driver. Age and real name unknown, he’s unbound by the laws of nature.

More recently, we learned that Nathan Fillion would be bringing his Guy Gardner character –– another Lantern –– to the show, following his debut in James Gunn‘s ‘Superman’ this summer.

    Who is working on ‘Lanterns’?

Mundy, whose resume includes stints on Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ and HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country’, is running the new series, working alongside ‘Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and DC comics writer Tom King (whose ‘Supergirl’ comic is the basis for the new movie featuring the character).

And James Hawes, who has worked on series including ‘Black Mirror’ ‘Snowpiercer’ and Season 1 of ‘Slow Horses,’ will direct the first two episodes.

Here’s what Hawes has had to say to Collider about his approach to the show:

“There is a very particular humor that they brought to this. It’s very rooted in a way that I like to think we achieve with ‘Slow Horses,’ that I achieve with things like my ‘Black Mirror’ [episodes], and yet there is a rich vein of humor running through it. I’m such a huge fan of Damon [Lindelof] and Chris [Mundy] and the writing that they’ve done in the past… You always find a scene or two that you think, ‘I cant wait to be stood beside the camera and the cast, directing this scene on the day.’ “

He’s not alone –– ‘Watchmen’ veteran Stephen Williams, ‘Under the Bridge’s Geeta Vasant Patel, and former ‘Ozark’ director Alik Sakharov are also handling episodes.

Since they oversee the whole DC Studios arm, filmmaker Gunn and producer Peter Safran are executive producers alongside Ron Schmidt.

‘Ozark’ is just one of this talented actor’s many credits.

She’s enjoyed a healthy career on screens big and small, appearing in movies such as ‘Nocturnal Animals,’ ‘Sully,’ ‘Mr. Holmes,’ ‘The Fifth Estate,’ ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose,’ ‘Mystic River,’ ‘The Savages,’ (for which she was Oscar nominated) ‘Love Actually,’ ‘You Can Count on Me,’ ‘The Truman Show’ and ‘Congo.’

On TV, her roles include ‘Tales of the City,’ ‘The Big C,’ ‘John Adams’ and ‘Frasier.’

When will ‘Lanterns’ be on screens?

We’re still waiting to learn when HBO will premiere the show, though it is reportedly targeting an early 2026 launch.

On limited release in theaters on Friday February 2nd before landing on Hulu February 9th, ‘Suncoast’ is the feature directorial debut of Laura Chinn, who has largely worked as an actor and writer/showrunner before.

Her film is partly based on a painful real-life experience, wherein her brother Max, was moved into the same hospice as controversial patient Terri Schiavo in 2005. Chinn uses the religious and ethical storm around Schiavo’s treatment, which forms one branch of the story here, though the focus is on the turbulent emotions of the main characters.

    Does ‘Suncoast’ Shine?

Unfortunately, despite its deeply personal roots, ‘Suncoast’ somewhat has the feel of an after school special (or, at times, one of those “issues” plays put on by amateur troupes to teach kids about drugs or bullying).

Though the cast do what they can with the material (and at least one needs the full force of his charisma to power through an underwritten role) but the whole feels like a disappointment.

    ‘Suncoast’: Script and Direction

While Chinn is bringing obvious personal power to the screenplay, the result is somewhat less than the sum of its parts. Characters are largely pressured into easy archetypes, with main character Doris a fairly standard, sullen teen who longs to have a normal life. Though there is a rich seam of material to explore in her frustration at her mother’s negligence when it comes to anything but her comatose brother.

The character of her mother, meanwhile, is a bundle of raw nerves, grieving a loss that has yet to happen while firmly denying the concept and putting all of her energy into making her son’s last days as comfortable as possible. It’s a noble effort for sure, but it does make the character uncomfortably unsympathetic at times, in a way that the movie doesn’t always recover from.

Outside of the central pair, we have the character of Paul, one of the protestors at the hospice who is on a Christian pro-life crusade for the effectively braindead Terry Schiavo. On a purely script front, he’s less a person than a walking expression of believes and a debate point for the writer/director.

And then we have the teenage friends that the withdrawn Doris finally starts to make, but for all their basic realism, they could also come out of teen rebellion drama 101, a collection of lust/party obsessed kids who really only start hanging out with Doris when she offers the empty family home when her mother starts sleeping at the hospice.

Chinn as a director also keeps things fairly basic. It’s not surprising to learn that the movie premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, as this is the epitome of 1990s Sundance drama in its composition and straightforward shooting. Though eschewing flashy visuals works to keep the story at the forefront, it can truly come across as a parody of an indie movie.

    ‘Suncoast’: Performances

Laura Linney and Nico Parker in 'Suncoast.'

With the script only doing so much work, it’s up to the cast to carry the load, and it is to Chinn’s advantage that she has cast some excellent performers who know how to handle this kind of story.

Laura Linney plays Christine, the mother of Doris and her ailing brother Max, and she brings the expected level of depth and anguish to the character of someone facing the death of one child while effectively treating the other as a nursing assistant more than a daughter. Linney makes Christine’s emotional trauma function, though even she can’t always get out of the narrative corners the script puts her in. At least until the usual emotional revelations arrive, which have less power because you see them coming for a while.

As Doris, her daughter, Nico Parker (who made her debut in Tim Burton’s live-action ‘Dumbo’ before appearing in ‘Reminiscence’ and TV’s ‘The Last of Us’) is also charged with wriggling her way out of the strictures of her character. She’s appropriately withdrawn, and never less than real (especially when seen beside the other teens in the movie) but the role sometimes defeats even her ability to carry it.

Nico Parker and Woody Harrelson in 'Suncoast.'
(L to R) Nico Parker and Woody Harrelson in ‘Suncoast.’ Photo by Eric Zachanowich. Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. © 2024 Searchlight Pictures All Rights Reserved.

Woody Harrelson has a much smaller role as Paul, the protestor who strikes up a friendship with Doris. He’s burdened with a somewhat predictable grief backstory and despite his role effectively being a walking polemic at times, Harrelson does finds moments of charm, such as when he teaches Doris to drive (an ongoing subplot is Christine refusing to let the learner’s-permitted teen take the wheel, but we bet you can guess what forms part of the family rapprochement at the end.

Paul has little to do besides befriending Doris and occasionally being seen at the protest marches, and for all of his warmth in the part, it feels beneath Harrelson.

Finally, we have the likes of Daniella Taylor, Ella Anderson and Amarr as three of the school friends that Doris latches on to when they actually take notice of her. They do their best, but the trio is such a collection of cliches, they’re more likely to annoy than entertain.

    ‘Suncoast’: Final Thoughts

Nico Parker and Laura Linney in 'Suncoast.'

At one hour and 49 minutes, ‘Suncoast’ sometimes feels like a slog, and not just because of the heavy emotions that weigh it down. There are ways to carry such burdens, but the movie never quite figures out how to do it, despite a talented cast.

It’s a real shame since Chinn was clearly working from a heartfelt place. But as we’ve seen before, not every impactful life event can land successfully as a movie.

‘Suncoast’ receives 5 out of 10 stars.

    What’s the story of ‘Suncoast’?

‘Suncoast’ is inspired by the semi-autobiographical story of a teenager named Doris (Nico Parker), who, while caring for her brother along with her audacious mother (Laura Linney), strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist (Woody Harrelson) who is protesting one of the most landmark medical cases of all time.

    Who else is in ‘Suncoast’?

The new drama’s cast also includes Ella Anderson, Daniella Taylor, Amarr and Ariel Martin.

‘Ozark’ Season 3 Is Official: Jason Bateman ‘Concerned’

    Ozark Season 2
    Netflix

Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) will be back for more desperate scrambling and shrewd strategy in Netflix’s “Ozark” Season 3.

Jason Bateman — lead actor, executive producer, *and* regular episode director — broke the news after teasing it out yesterday on Twitter:

    https://twitter.com/batemanjason/status/1050036891687370754

Yeah, Marty is pretty much overwhelmed at this point. He wouldn’t be rooting for more. (Wendy, on the other hand…)

Netflix just released “Ozark” Season 2 on August 31. The first two seasons had 10 episodes each, and that’s expected to be the same for Season 3.

You know who’s going to love this news? LeBron James. He’s been plugging the show, and waiting for Netflix to announce Season 3:

    https://twitter.com/batemanjason/status/1043530096445800448

It’s true. Ruth (Julia Garner) is the best.

    https://twitter.com/beans4reezy/status/1049027397633396736

Julia Garner is serving some A+ acting right now, from “Ozark” and “The Americans” to “Maniac,” playing drastically different characters in each series. Maybe she’ll be next on the Emmys list. Jason Bateman was nominated for Season 1 in two categories at the 2018 Emmys: Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Directing for a Drama Series.

There’s no Season 3 release date at this point, but Season 1 came out in July 2017, and Netflix released Season 2 in August 2018, so … let’s go ahead and pencil in Season 3 for next summer.

  • Ian McKellen Is an Aging Sherlock in the ‘Mr. Holmes’ Trailer

    Mr. Holmes
The new film “Mr. Holmes” is a fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes character known the world over, which picks up with the famous detective years after the height of his fame, as he’s grappling with aging and one last, seemingly unsolvable case.

Ian McKellen plays the titular character, who sneers at depictions of his life on the big screen and denies ever donning a deerstalker cap or smoking a pipe (he prefers cigars, thank you very much). Yet despite the legend that he’s become, Holmes still can’t shake the last case of his career, one he failed to solve and which haunts him daily.

He strikes up a friendship with Roger, the young son of his housekeeper (Laura Linney), and re-opens his files, all the while coming to terms with what may be the last chapter of his life. This is treacly territory — old man befriends little boy, feelings ensue — but the cliche seems to be in good hands with McKellen at the helm. The actor, himself in the twilight of his career, is tailor-made for this part, and his soulful performance should imbue this visually-stunning film with even more beauty.

“Mr. Holmes,” directed by Bill Condon (who also directed McKellen to an Academy Award nomination in “Gods and Monsters”), is due in theaters on July 17.

  • Laura Linney Joins ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2’ in Secretive Role

    ENTERTAINMENT-GERMANY-FILM-FESTIVAL-BERLINALE
The addition of Tyler Perry to the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2” cast was pretty surprising, but that oddity has just been trumped: Laura Linney has reportedly joined the ensemble.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Linney will star in the sequel to the recently-rebooted “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series in an undisclosed role. The actress has favored dramatic and awards-baiting fare in the past (she’s a three-time Oscar nominee, and Golden Globe and Emmy winner for her work on Showtime dramedy “The Big C”), so her addition to the big-budget, effects-heavy, kid-friendly franchise is certainly a bit of a headscratcher; we’ll be interested to see just who she’s playing once more details are revealed.

Linney joins Perry, Steven Amell, and Brian Tee as fresh faces in the flick. Megan Fox and Will Arnett will reprise their roles from the 2014 film.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2” is due in theaters on June 3, 2016.

  • Ian McKellen Has One Last Mystery to Solve in ‘Mr. Holmes’ Trailer

Mr. HolmesMove over, Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey, Jr. – there’s a new Sherlock Holmes in town.

Ian McKellen plays the famous fictional detective in the upcoming film, “Mr. Holmes,” from director Bill Condon. A new teaser trailer gives us a glimpse at the story: An aging, 90something Holmes is in retirement, living with a housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her young son, when an old unsolved case comes back to haunt him. But the whip-smart detective’s memory isn’t what it used to be, and completing the puzzle won’t be an easy task.

The trailer looks gorgeous, and McKellen seems to be in top form – all in all, a potentially very satisfying piece of Prestige British Filmmaking.

  • Ian McKellen Is Adorable as an Old Sherlock Holmes in ‘Mr. Holmes’ (VIDEO)

    Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes
What happened to Sherlock Holmes after he retired from the private dick biz? Did he ever retire? The upcoming movie “Mr. Holmes” catches up with Sherlock as a 93-year-old man who’s more interested in bee keeping then solving crimes. At the prodding of young Roger, the son of his housekeeper Mrs. Munro, Holmes reflects on his early years, why he retired, and one last unsolved case.

Although “Mr. Holmes” is billed as a mystery, it looks like it will tug a few heartstrings too. After all, who can resist Ian McKellen as an elderly gent contemplating his mortality? The film reunites McKellen with his “Gods and Monsters” director Bill Condon. Incidentally, Laura Linney, who plays Sherlock’s housekeeper Mrs. Munro, was in Condon’s film “Kinsey.” In any case, although Condon’s come to be more famous for his work on the “Twilight” flicks, “Mr. Holmes” looks like a promising venture.

“Mr. Holmes” is due out this summer.
