    • Host Conan O’Brien will return for next year’s Oscars ceremony.
    • O’Brien has experience with shows such as the Emmys, ‘The Simpsons’ and his own late night output.
    • The 2026 ceremony will be held on March 15th next year.

    Well, that didn’t take long.

Clearly looking to avoid the protracted search and endless speculation about who would host the 2025 Oscars, the heads of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have moved quickly to confirm that this year’s host, comedian and talk show veteran Conan O’Brien, has already been confirmed to return for 2026.

Yes, forget making any guesses as to whether Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman or any number of other big names (longtime Oscar host Billy Crystal accepting a giant payday to come back for one more ceremony?), this time the Academy wanted to make it clear: Conan is the man. Again.

It follows the well-received ceremony of earlier this month, which saw ‘Anora’ score five Oscars (including a record four in one night for one person on one movie for writer/director/producer/editor Sean Baker) and a running time that, while it was overlong, still managed to be entertaining.

You can find our recap here.

A lot of that credit goes to O’Brien, the writing team assembled to work with him and the producing side of things, so it’s perhaps not surprising that Emmy-winning producing team Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan are also returning to lead the show for the third consecutive year.

And on a pure ratings level it was also a success, as the ceremony, held on March 2nd, delivered the highest viewership numbers in five years. The broadcast drew 19.69 million viewers and had a dominant presence on social media, racking up 104.2 million interactions, surpassing both the Grammys and the Super Bowl in online engagement.

If this year’s Oscars wasn’t enough of an introduction to wider audiences as to O’Brien’s style, here’s a quick briefing…

Conan began his late-night hosting career in 1993, taking over for David Letterman on NBC’s ‘Late Night.’ After an ill-fated, year-long tenure at ‘The Tonight Show’ after replacing Jay Leno in 2009, O’Brien later moved to TBS for ‘Conan,’ which he hosted from 2011 to 2021.

In recent years, he transitioned from anchoring a late night talk show to hosting a hit podcast, ‘Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,’ and presiding over a podcasting empire under the banner of Team Coco.

A former writer on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘The Simpsons,’ he has garnered 31 Emmy nominations, five of which resulted in wins.

In terms of awards shows, O’Brien has also hosted the Emmy Awards a couple of times, and also served as emcee of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 1995 and 2013. He was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2010, and is the 2025 recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

O’Brien was typically quippy about his return engagement:

“The only reason I’m hosting the Oscars next year is that I want to hear Adrien Brody finish his speech.”

It’s a reference to ‘The Brutalist’ Best Actor winner Adrien Brody, whose speech, which ran to around five minutes and 40 seconds, has ranked as the longest in Academy history.

Kramer and Yang were more straightforward in their own press release:

“We are thrilled to bring back Conan, Raj, Katy, Jeff and Mike for the 98th Oscars! This year, they produced a hugely entertaining and visually stunning show that celebrated our nominees and the global film community in the most beautiful and impactful way. Conan was the perfect host — skillfully guiding us through the evening with humor, warmth and reverence. It is an honor to be working with them again.”

Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich had this to say:

“Conan’s unique comedic style perfectly captured the moment, and I’m excited to have his talents back onstage next year to helm another indelible performance.”

Finally, this was the comment from Oscars executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan:

“We are both so honored to be returning in our roles for the 98th Oscars. We can’t wait to work with Conan and his entire team as we continue to explore even more special and heartfelt opportunities to celebrate next year’s nominees and the impact of film around the world.”

When will the 98th Oscars be on TV?

The 98th Academy Awards, held once again at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, are set to air live on ABC on March 15th next year, starting at 7pm ET/4pm PT.

    • Conan O’Brien will host next year’s Oscars ceremony.
    • The announcement comes after a lengthy search.
    • O’Brien has experience with shows such as ‘The Simpsons’ and his own late night output.

Each year –– aside from when a previous host such as Jimmy Kimmel agrees to return –– there is the seemingly long slog for the team behind the Academy Awards in finding a suitable host for the televised ceremony of handing out trophies to some of the best movies and performances of the past year.

Now we finally know who has the job: Conan O’Brien, a man who is best known for his comedy career, his relatively short-lived stint in primetime late-night TV and his resurgence after that.

He’s an interesting choice –– certainly a proven talent in both writing and performing, but perhaps not as well-known as some previous hosts. Still, his job will be to make some initial jokes and keep the ceremony moving and we’re fascinated to see what he comes up with.

While the search for a new host is private, there are always leaks and speculation about who might take the stage, following a legacy that has included the likes of Kimmel, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Jerry Lewis, Hugh Jackman and Bob Hope.

This year, while Kimmel was offered the chance to return, he turned it down, and comedian John Mulaney also reportedly passed on the job. There was also talk of Jackman coming back, this time alongside ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ co-star/pal Ryan Reynolds, but that has not worked out.

In his own, inimitable, self-deprecating style, O’Brien had this to say about the choice:

“America demanded it and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars.”

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang were more straightforward in their own press release:

“We are thrilled and honored to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year. He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best –– honor the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”

Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich had this to say:

“Conan is a preeminent comedic voice, whose decades-long success is marked by his distinctive humor and perspective. He joins an iconic roster of comedy greats who have served in this role, and we are so lucky to have him center stage for the Oscars.”

Finally, this was the comment from Oscars executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan:

“Conan has all the qualities of a great Oscars host –– he is incredibly witty, charismatic and funny and has proven himself to be a master of live event television. We are so looking forward to working with him to deliver a fresh, exciting and celebratory show for Hollywood’s biggest night.”

  • Box Office: ‘Dark Phoenix’ Has Worst X-Men Opening Ever, Beaten by ‘Secret Life of Pets 2’

Box Office: ‘Dark Phoenix’ Has Worst X-Men Opening Ever, Beaten by ‘Secret Life of Pets 2’

    Fox/Disney

The last “X-Men” film under the 20th Century Fox mantle, “Dark Phoenix,” flamed out with a disappointing $33 million, making it the worst debut in the franchise’s 20-year history.

The sequel, starring Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, suffered from franchise fatigue, bad worth of mouth and scathing reviews. Before this, “The Wolverine” had the lowest opening for an “X-Men” film with $53 million in 2013.

It’s going to be tough to earn back that $200 million budget, especially with a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes and a”B-” CinemaScore. That’s the same grade audiences gave the previous film in the series, “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which bowed with $65 million and went on to earn $543 million in ticket sales worldwide.

The entire franchise is scheduled for a reboot. Good luck with that, Disney.

    Illumination/Universal

Another new sequel, “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” nabbed first place with an unimpressive $47.11 million, less than half of the $104 million the first film earned its first weekend in 2016.

At least that’s better than previous Illumination films “Hop” ($37 million) and “Sing” ($35 million). Audiences gave “Pets 2” the same “A-” CinemaScore as the first film, which went on to earn $368 million at the domestic box office.

    Warner Bros/Legendary

Meanwhile, last week’s champ, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” saw a steep decline in sales. In its second weekend, the monster movie took in $15.4 million, a drastic 68% drop from its first weekend in theaters. “King of the Monsters” has earned $78 million in North America so far.

    Amazon Studios

In limited release, the talk show comedy “Late Night,” starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson,  earned $249,654 when it opened in four locations, averaging $62,414 per theater. Kaling wrote the film, which has an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and 100% from audiences.

    A24

Also debuting in select theaters, “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” which boasted the second-best screen average of the weekend. The indie film took in $230,744 from 7 theaters for an average of $32,963 per theater. It won Best Director and a Special Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Here are the top 10 estimates for June 7-9, 2019

    1. “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” $47,110,000
    2. “Dark Phoenix $33,000,000
    3. “Aladdin“(2019), $24,500,000
    4. “Godzilla: King of the Monsters, “$15,540,000
    5. “Rocketman,” $14,000,000
    6. “Ma” (2019), $7,820,000
    7. “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” $7,400,000
    8. “Avengers: Endgame,” $4,800,000
    9. “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” $2,980,000
    10. “Booksmart,” $1,577,259

The “Late Night” scene is getting a new look.

The first trailer for the Sundance darling starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling has arrived. The comedy debuted in January at the festival to much acclaim and was snatched up by Amazon for a tab of $13 million.

Thompson plays late night talk show host Katherine Newbury, whose world is turned upside down when she attempts to address diversity issues by hiring her first female staff writer (Mindy Kaling). Generational clashes ensue, all while rumors swirl that the host will soon be replaced.

Think “Devil Wears Prada,” but with David Letterman or Jay Leno as the boss.

Kaling wrote and produced the film, and the trailer bears all the hallmarks of her snappy, clever humor. John Lithgow, Amy Ryan, Ike Barinholtz, Hugh Dancy, and Denis O’Hare also star.

“Late Night” opens in theaters June 17.

  • Carson Daly Quits NBC’s Late Night ‘Last Call’ After 17 Years

Carson Daly Quits NBC’s Late Night ‘Last Call’ After 17 Years

    NBC

It’s truly the “Last Call” for Carson Daly.

Daly is stepping away as the host of the NBC (very) late night talk show after 17 years.

NBC says Daly will continue to host “The Voice” and deliver the social media reports in the Orange Room on “Today.” The exit also gives him more time to spend with his family.

The network noted that Daly has been working in three television dayparts (morning, primetime, and late night). “Last Call” airs at 1:35 a.m. NBC will announce a new show to fill the empty slot soon; a finale date for “Last Call” hasn’t been set.

“If you had told me in 2002 I would be a part of the historic NBC late-night family for 17 years, I would have said you were crazy,” Daly said in a statement. “Hard to believe it’s been so long – 2,000 episodes. It’s time to move on to something new and let someone else have access to this incredible platform.”

When “Last Call” ends, it will have aired  2,000 episodes. Daly holds the record for the longest active run of hosting the same late-night show.

“My 20’s was about finding a good job,” Daly said. “My 30’s was about taking on as many of them as I could. Now, in my 40’s, I’m focused on quality over quantity … I’m forever grateful and proud to all who have worked with us at ‘Last Call’ over the years. So many have gone on to achieve incredible success. I’m very excited to fulfill other areas I’m passionate about within our company. The Golf Channel has always been a favorite of mine and we have a few exciting things in the works. I look forward to building on that. I could have all the jobs in the world, but none of them are more important to me than that of Dad. My family will always remain my top priority and greatest gig.”

Big deals are going down at the Sundance Film Festival, and two of them involve Amazon and its deep pockets.

The streaming service paid $14 million to acquire “The Report,” a political drama starring Adam Driver, Annette Bening, Jon Hamm, Maura Tierney, and Michael C. Hall.

Amazon also spent $13 million on “Late Night,” a comedy starring Emma Thompson as a Letterman-esque talk show host whose world is turned upside down when she attempts to address diversity issues by hiring her first female staff writer (Mindy Kaling). That figure sets a new Sundance record for domestic distribution rights.

“The Report,” written and directed by Scott Z. Burns, is based on the true story of the Bush-Cheney era torture programs. Senate staffer Daniel Jones (Driver) leads an investigation into the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program and learns about “enhanced interrogation techniques” that the CIA adopted after 9/11. When Jones and the Senate Intelligence Committee, including Dianne Feinstein (Bening) attempt to release the results from the investigation, the CIA and White House seek to muzzle them.

“Late Night” is officially headed to the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, and with the big announcement came the first photos.

The upcoming comedy starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson centers on a fictional late-night talk show. Although the host (Thompson) is legendary, her show is in jeopardy. To “smooth over diversity concerns,” per the film’s official synopsis, she brings on a female writer (Kaling). The character then ends up shaking things up big-time.

The writer of the comedy itself is none other than Kaling herself. She shared the photos via Twitter on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

As you can see above, they offer a glimpse at both Kaling and Thompson’s characters. The two are described as “united by their love of a biting punchline,” even though they are “separated by culture and generation.”

“Late Night” is directed by Nisha Ganatra. The cast also includes John Lithgow, Paul Walter Hauser, Reid Scott, and Amy Ryan.

So far, the exact date of the film’s world premiere hasn’t been announced. Sundance will run from Jan. 24 to Feb. 3.
