‘Someone Great’ Trailer Sends Gina Rodriguez on a Breakup Adventure

    Netflix

Breaking up is hard to do — but it’s a little easier with the help of good friends and an epic night in New York City.

Netflix unveiled the trailer for its upcoming romantic comedy “Someone Great.” Well, the tone is rom-com, but it comes with a twist. Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) lands her dream job in San Francisco, but her boyfriend of nine years (Lakeith Stanfield) doesn’t want to move or try long-distance dating.

After the breakup, Jenny is depressed — “I leave in a week, and then I turn 30, and then I die, probably” — so her besties (Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise) bolster her spirits by taking her on one last adventure in NYC.

Call it more of a post-romantic comedy, since the relationship at the heart of it is (seemingly) over, or even a platonic comedy, since the female friendships take center stage.

“Someone Great” premieres April 19 on Netflix.

  • Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield to Star in Black Panther Movie ‘Jesus Was My Homeboy’

    Universal/Annapurna

Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield (who shared the screen in “Get Out‘) are in negotiations to star in the historical drama “Jesus Was My Homeboy” about Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton.

Ryan Coogler is producing, but not directing. (Kaluuya was also in Coogler’s “Black Panther,” of course, about the Marvel superhero, not the political party.)

Shaka King will direct and produce from a script he wrote with Will Berson. It will focus on the infamous 1969 death of Hampton, who was shot and killed in his own apartment during a police and FBI raid. His death was ruled a justifiable homicide, but a civil lawsuit resulted in a $1.85 million settlement in 1982.

Kaluuya is in talks to play Hampton and Stanfield would play William O’Neal, an FBI informant who later committed suicide.

The two actors shared a pivotal scene in Jordan Peele’s hit horror movie in which Stanfield’s semi-catatonic character warns Kaluuya’s to “Get out!”

Last year, Kaluuya played a brutal crime boss in “Widows,” and Stanfield was a telemarketer in Boots Riley’s “Sorry to Bother You.”

  • Lakeith Stanfield in Talks to Star in Jordan Peele’s ‘Candyman’ Reboot

Jordan Peele and Lakeith Stanfield are planning a “Get Out” reunion.

Peele is producing and co-wrote the script for a “Candyman” reboot that is described as “a spiritual sequel” to the 1992 horror classic. Nia DaCosta (“Little Woods”) is on board to direct.  And Stanfield is in talks to star as the protagonist, news that was first reported by SuperBroMovies and confirmed by Collider.

The “Sorry to Bother You” actor would play Anthony, a “socially pronounced artist” who is researching the urban legend known as Candyman. Then, the people around Anthony start dying.

(It’s unclear if the victims chanted the name “Candyman” five times in front of the mirror. )

The 1992 film, based on a short story by Clive Barker, was the first major horror film with a black main villain, as Candyman was a former slave who’d had his hand cut off. Peele has called it “a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre.”

Of course, Peele previously addressed racial themes in horror movies in his mega hit “Get Out,” which featured Stanfield in a memorable supporting role.

The new “Candyman” is slated for release June 12, 2020.

  • Rian Johnson’s Star-Studded ‘Knives Out’ Lands 2019 Release Date

Rian Johnson’s Star-Studded ‘Knives Out’ Lands 2019 Release Date

    Sony Pictures Entertainment

How do you follow making a “Star Wars” movie? Direct a film starring James Bond, Captain America, and the Queen of Horror, naturally.

That’s exactly what “The Last Jedi” helmer Rian Johnson is doing with his latest project, “Knives Out,” and now, the star-studded flick has a release date. Deadline reports that the film is set to open on November 27, 2019, which is the day before Thanksgiving.

Though little is known about the murder mystery so far, Johnson has said that it’s inspired by the work of acclaimed author Agatha Christie, and it centers around a detective trying to solve a murder. Daniel Craig plays the lead, and the rest of the ridiculously impressive cast includes (deep breath) Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Ana de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Katherine Langford, and Don Johnson. Phew.

Representatives for Lionsgate, which is distributing the film, are understandably excited for the project. One exec told Deadline that “Knives Out” “redefines the detective movie genre in a cool and original way” and is a “big, crowd-pleasing” flick.

Sounds perfect to us. We’ll be ready to take it in next November.
