Rumor: Lady Gaga Stands Up For Fellow Oscar-Nominated Musicians

    Warner Bros.

After failing to secure a host, producers of this year’s Oscars have tried to whittle down the big night by (reportedly) not presenting certain awards like cinematography live. And — gasp — not having all the Oscar-nominated musicians perform during the ceremony.

They did an about-face on the last one, apparently thanks to Lady Gaga, who is nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Song.

The Academy  — who reportedly wanted Queen to open the show at one point — had originally decided that only two songs would be performed on Oscar night: “Shallow” from “A Star is Born” and  Kendrick Lamar/SZA’s “All the Stars” from “Black Panther,” according to Deadline.

That would mean we wouldn’t see Jennifer Hudson sing “I’ll Fight” from “RBG,” or Tim Blake Nelson reprise  “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” (Word is Emily Blunt might opt out of performing “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns.”)

Deadline reported: “The reason the Academy walked back that decision was because either Lady Gaga herself, or her reps, made it clear she felt it was completely unfair to eliminate the three songs — almost like the Academy producers were forecasting who they thought would win — and that she wouldn’t perform if a change wasn’t made. And that’s why the Academy tweeted that all the songs will be shown, even if the tunes are truncated.”

We might be hearing only 90-second versions of the songs, which means that Best Original Song performances will run less than 8 minutes, total.

And, more scandal, last year’s acting winners — Gary Oldman, Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, and Allison Janney — have reportedly not yet been asked to present this year’s awards. Instead the Academy is rumored to be seeking “bigger stars” like Tom Hanks or Oprah Winfrey for the honor.

Let’s hope Sam Rockwell at least is invited as he’s nominated again this year!

And that all this gets sorted out before Oscar night, which is February 24.

  • ‘Just Dance’ Is the Latest Video Game to Become a Movie

‘Just Dance’ Is the Latest Video Game to Become a Movie

    Ubisoft

There’s no shortage of video games being turned into movies these days, but news of the latest title set to hit the big screen may just make you want to do a happy dance.

A film based on “Just Dance,” the super popular dance game, is currently in the works at Sony Pictures’s Screen Gems. According to Deadline, the opportunity for corporate synergy is a big plus for the studio, thanks to the game’s dominance on Sony’s PlayStation platform (it’s available on other consoles, too), and the presence of plenty of music from Sony artists — including Shakira, Pharrell Williams, Alicia Keys, Camila Cabello, The Chainsmokers, Jennifer Lopez, P!nk, and Calvin Harris — in the game itself.

Of course, “Just Dance” doesn’t exactly have a narrative structure, but that hasn’t stopped other similarly story-challenged film inspirations from getting off the ground (though not entirely successfully). The game, first introduced back in 2009, is named after a Lady Gaga song, so perhaps Mother Monster can make a cameo to sing her signature tune? Or maybe the flick could take some inspiration from “Wreck-It Ralph,” and explore the behind the scenes drama of all those dancing avatars.

One bit of good news for this adaptation is that the creative team includes Will Gluck, the director behind films including “Easy A,” “Friends With Benefits,” “Annie,” and “Peter Rabbit.” While Gluck is likely not directing, per Deadline, he is producing, and his eclectic resume should help bring plenty of ideas to the table.

And if all else fails, we’d suggest filmmakers just — well, you know.

  • The Ally Billboard From ‘A Star is Born’ Is a Real Thing Now

The Ally Billboard From ‘A Star is Born’ Is a Real Thing Now

    Warner Bros.

Just in time for the Golden Globes (where “A Star is Born” is up for five awards), there’s a real Ally billboard on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles.

Lady Gaga (aka rising star Ally) stares out from the billboard next to the Chateau Marmont hotel. (In the film, it’s promoting Ally’s debut album. She goes on to win Best New Artist at the Grammys.)

New York Times’ awards editor Kyle Buchanan spotted the billboard and posted it to Twitter.

“A Star Is Born” also has four SAG Award nominations and just received a nomination from the Producers Guild of America.

There’s no mention of “A Star is Born” or Lady Gaga, because… well, who needs it?

Lady Gaga Visits, Sings to LA Fire Evacuees at Shelter

    Warner Bros.

After having had to flee her own home in Malibu because of the raging California wildfires, Lady Gaga stopped by a nearby Red Cross shelter to cheer up some of her fellow evacuees.

TMZ reports that the “A Star is Born” actress and singer spent 90 minutes at a Red Cross shelter at Pacific Palisades High School Sunday night.

The star, who is well-known for speaking out on mental health issues including her own, urged the displaced residents to take advantage of the counselors on the premises and to “share your stories and talk to each other during this time.”

She said, “I extend my love … I know we do not know each other, but I love you. This is an emergency, but you are not alone.”

She reportedly handed out handed out gift cards, and even sang to a 98-year-old woman who’d been evacuated.

She told the crowd, “Let’s keep the faith, together.”

One of the uniformed officers there, Mack Dugger, shared a photo with Lady Gaga to Instagram.

Gerard Butler shared a heartbreaking photo of the damage done to his home in Malibu. He’s among thousands of people who had to flee from the Woolsey and Hill Fires in Southern California.

Butler returned to his Malibu residence Sunday and found it “half-gone,” as he shared on Instagram. “Returned to my house in Malibu after evacuating. Heartbreaking time across California,” wrote the “Geostorm” star.

He also posted two videos on his Instagram story, in which he shows his destroyed property and says, “Welcome to my home in Malibu. Half gone.”

He thanked the Los Angeles Fire Department who has been battling the fires nonstop, saying,”Inspired as ever by the courage, spirit and sacrifice of firefighters. Thank you @LosAngelesFireDepartment. If you can, support these brave men and women at SupportLAFD.org.”

Alongside the video where he surveys the damage, he wrote, “My heart aches for all those who lost their homes and their lives in California. I was one of the lucky ones, my home was only partially destroyed. A lot of people lost everything and will have to rebuild from scratch. I am ok and so grateful for all of the well wishes.” He asked people to donate to those who’ve lost their homes at  GoFundMe.

Among other public figures who’ve lost their houses to the devastating wildfires: Miley Cyrus, director Scott Derrickson and singer Neil Young.

Ireland Baldwin shared on Twitter that her mother, Kim Basinger, lost her home in Malibu. “So many friends and friends and family of friends are losing everything they own in these fires. My mom and her partner lost their Malibu home in #Woolseyfire and thankfully, they are both safe,” she Tweeted. She added that police accused her of looting when she returned to the home to “gather a couple of things.”

Several other famous names are among the thousands who have been forced to evacuate, including Lady Gaga, Orlando Bloom, Kim Kardashian and Guillermo del Toro.

The Woolsey Fire began Thursday night and by Friday  Malibu, Calabasas and neighboring areas had to be evacuated. Between it and the Hill Fire, more than 250,000 have been forced to flee their homes.

Firefighters also faced the Camp Fire in Northern California that’s destroyed over 6,700 structures and killed at least 42 people, making it the most destructive fire in state history.

  • Barbra Streisand ‘Really Liked’ What She’s Seen of New ‘A Star Is Born’

Barbra Streisand ‘Really Liked’ What She’s Seen of New ‘A Star Is Born’

    Warner Bros.

Barbra Streisand hasn’t seen the new version of “A Star Is Born” in its entirety but what she’s seen, she “really liked.”

Streisand headlined the 1976 version of the film opposite Kris Kristofferson and won an Oscar for co-writing the song “Evergreen.” The newest version stars Bradley Cooper (who also directed) and Lady Gaga.

“I haven’t seen it completed. Bradley [Cooper] did show me the opening,” Streisand told the New York Times.

“I was surprised by how similar it was to my version. I loved how he used the drag bar. I thought that was new and interesting. What I’ve seen of the film I really liked.”

Streisand previously gave her blessing to the project during a visit to the set.

“ Everybody was so excited she was there. We just looked at each other and were like, ‘Wow. How are we here right now?’” Cooper told Entertainment Weekly.

Gaga said, “She was so, so kind.”

  • Oscars 2019: ‘A Star Is Born’ Best Original Song Submissions Peg Lady Gaga for Multiple Nominations

Oscars 2019: ‘A Star Is Born’ Best Original Song Submissions Peg Lady Gaga for Multiple Nominations

    Warner Bros.

Lady Gaga is already earning tons of Best Actress Oscar buzz for her role in the hit love story “A Star Is Born.” But she could also wind up scoring a Best Original Song statuette, too.

Warner Bros. announced this week that they are submitting three songs from the Bradley Cooper film’s insanely awesome soundtrack for consideration at the 91st annual Academy Awards. The tunes that made the cut are “Shallow” (the film’s signature song, which was featured in its first trailer), “I’ll Never Love Again,” and “Always Remember Us This Way.”

According to IndieWire, only two songs from one film can be nominated for Best Original Song, so Warner Bros. is hedging its bets here by submitting three tracks. But no matter which “A Star Is Born” song or songs Academy members vote for (and at this point, “Shallow” seems to be a lock), Lady Gaga will get a nod, since she co-wrote all three.

Gaga received her first Oscar nomination back in 2016, when she was honored in the Best Original Song category for co-writing “Til It Happens to You,” from the campus sexual assault documentary “The Hunting Ground.” Though she didn’t take home a trophy that night, she put on a moving performance of the tune; we’re betting she has something equally amazing planned for next year’s ceremony, too.

The 91st annual Academy Awards will air on ABC on February 24, 2019.

Prepare to Weep, Lady Gaga Shares ‘I’ll Never Love Again’ Music Video From ‘A Star Is Born’

    Warner Bros.

Get the tissues ready, because Lady Gaga has dropped the music video for “I’ll Never Love Again,” the emotional and tearjerking last song of “A Star Is Born.”

Gaga shared a teaser on Twitter, and the full music video is available only on Apple Music.

The soaring ballad showcases Gaga’s vocal range and acting chops during the finale of the hit movie, which was directed by co-star Bradley Cooper. Ally sings it as a tribute to [MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD] …

… her husband, Jackson Maine (Cooper), who committed suicide.

Gaga filmed the scene on the same day that friend Sonja Durham died after battling cancer.

“My very, very, very dear friend Sonja died of cancer that day,” Gaga told Entertainment Weekly. “We were supposed to shoot in, like, 30 minutes, and I left the set because her husband called me and I could hear her in the background and I just got in the car and drove. I missed her by 15 minutes and she died. I literally laid with her, with her husband, and their dog, and his son…. When I came back, Bradley was so gentle with me and we got through it. I performed the song. He was like, ‘You don’t have to do it again. It’s okay.’ All I wanted to do was sing. I’ll never forget that day. It was really a special scene, and I’ll always remember that moment.”

Lady Gaga Sets New Music Record as ‘A Star Is Born’ Soundtrack Debuts at No. 1

    WB

Is That Alright?” You bet it is!

Lady Gaga just reached a new milestone. She and Bradley Cooper co-star in the new film “A Star Is Born,” and they are also the lead artists on the smash hit soundtrack. That soundtrack dropped October 5 and debuted at No. 1, selling 231,000 units in the United States in its first week. According to Billboard, it was the biggest week for a soundtrack in more than three-and-a-half years.

The soundtrack marked Gaga’s fifth No. 1 album, and it’s also her fifth No. 1 album this decade. That marks a new record for women, surpassing her previous tie with Taylor Swift for four No. 1 albums in the ’10s.

    A Star Is Born
    Warner Bros.

Gaga previously had No. 1 albums with “Born This Way” (2011), “ARTPOP” (2013), “Cheek to Cheek” (2014), and “Joanne” (2016). Gaga is now tied with Kanye West, Future, and J. Cole with five No. 1 albums this decade. Justin Bieber has six No. 1 albums so far in the ’10s, and Drake is leading the pack with eight.

    20th Century Fox

“A Star Is Born” is already the third best-selling soundtrack of the year after just one week. The 231,000 units sold included 162,000 pure album sales; that already puts it close behind “Black Panther: The Album” with 223,000 albums sold. Top of the list is still “The Greatest Showman” at this point, with a total of 1.26 million albums sold in 2018, and 1.35 million if you also include its numbers from 2017.

“A Star Is Born” has taken second place on the box office charts for two weeks in a row, behind the Sony/Marvel comic book movie “Venom.”
