Opening in theaters and on VOD on November 21st is the new Christmas movie ‘Tinsel Town’, which was directed by Chris Foggin (‘This is Christmas’), and stars Kiefer Sutherland (‘24’), Rebel Wilson (‘Pitch Perfect’), Alice Eve (‘Star Trek Into Darkness’), and Derek Jacobi (‘The King’s Speech’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kiefer Sutherland about his work on ‘Tinsel Town’, his first reaction to the screenplay, making his first Christmas movie, his character and his relationship to his daughter, the UK’s holiday tradition of pantomime, and working with the cast and director Chris Foggin, as well as an update on the future of ‘24’ and what it was like acting opposite Al Pacino in the upcoming ‘Father Joe’.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and is this the first Christmas movie you’ve ever made?

Kiefer Sutherland: It is the first Christmas movie that I’ve ever been in, and I was really moved by the script. Obviously, this is not something that I normally do, a comedy that is as broad as this. I thought it was incredibly funny. I think the British make these kinds of movies, kind of a warmhearted stories, they do them well. Chris Foggin is a fantastic director, but I loved the script. I found it very funny, and I just thought it was a nice story about someone who had lost their way as a human being, and the worst their life got, the better human being they became. I think that’s a kind of a wonderful fable. I found that the stuff between him and his daughter to be really moving as well. So, it had a lot of elements, whether it was the comedy and a touching drama at the same time, and it kind of came together. Piers Ashwood, who wrote the screenplay, I think just did a masterful job. So, I thought it was very funny right away and I was excited to be a part of it.

MF: Your character, Bradley Mack, is a difficult Hollywood actor. Did you draw influence from any difficult actors that you have worked with along the way?

KS: Well, I think first off, I had to take a very serious look at myself, right? I think over 43 years, I think there’s probably been moments where I have maybe been difficult. Certainly, in my younger years, I know that when you’re trying to find your way, you can make some mistakes and things like that. So, I drew upon those memories. Then, yes, I’ve seen some other actors be kind of demanding and maybe more demanding than their talent deserved, and Bradley Mack is kind of a perfect composite of that. What I really liked again about the screenplay is that he’s not a bad person. He’s just gone down a bad path, and that we all can find our way back. That’s really what the film is about. It’s just told in a very funny way.

MF: Bradley Mack is specifically an action star; did you feel like that gave you a chance to spoof your iconic ‘24’ persona in a way?

KS: I think a little bit, yeah, and it was fun. You know, I think it was fun. It’s very funny that people that kind of do an action movie here and there can sometimes start to think that they’re very skilled, either as a fighter or with weapons and things like that. The truth is you’re not. You’re taught just enough to fake it. So, I’ve always found that very funny. So, to be able to play that in a character for a film was a lot of fun.

MF: Can you talk about Bradley’s estranged relationship with his daughter and this experience makes him a better father?

KS: Well, again, he was confronted with a reality that he was, in fact, a bad father. Then, he is just forced to spend some time with his daughter because of these certain circumstances and he falls in love with her. My daughter was played by Matilda Firth, who is an extraordinary, gifted young actor. In the context of our movie, she was the adult in the relationship. That was a lot of fun and she guided her father back to being a better human being. I find that a very touching aspect of the film.

MF: How familiar were you with the UK’s holiday tradition of pantomime, called Panto? Did you do any research into the tradition?

KS: I did, absolutely. I certainly was not as familiar before the film I am now. I had never really seen a live pantomime, I’ve seen film versions here and there of a pantomime, but I’ve never been to one. So, when we got to Leeds, England, I was very excited because they had a pantomime on for that season, and unfortunately, it had closed two days before, so I wasn’t able to see it. But obviously, I got a great deal of help from everybody there, and it is a significant tradition in the UK and people take it very seriously. We talk about it in the context of the film, but it financially supports a lot of those theaters through the rest of the year. So, I think it’s very cool and it was fun to make a movie about it.

MF: Can you talk about working with Rebel Wilson, Alice Eve and legendary actor Sir Derek Jacobi, as well as the rest of the cast?

KS: Alice was fantastic. I only worked for her for a few days, but her timing is extraordinary, and she’s so incredibly funny as my divorced wife and James (Lance) did a great job as well, who played her new husband. Derek Jacobi is one of the great actors of all time, Sir Derek Jacobi, and to be able to have an opportunity to work with him was fantastic. Maria Friedman, Meera Syal, Danny Dyer, just all those fantastic actors, all just had such beautiful timing, and all kind of added personal moments to the movie. So, it was an absolute thrill to work with everybody.

MF: What was it like collaborating with director Chris Foggin on this film and what are you looking for from a director on set?

KS: For me, I’m looking for someone to be in charge. You know, the director is the one person who’s going to travel from the pre-production stage of a movie to the production stage and filming of the movie, the post-production stage where they’re editing and finalizing the music and all the special effects. So that’s the person that has the vision that’s going to carry its way through the entire film. I’m looking for someone to lead that, and that’s what the director is supposed to do. You know, having done this for quite some time, if you’re not working towards a shared vision, you’re going to end up on the cutting room floor. So, Chris is someone that I asked for guidance from, and at the end of the day, especially if you’re doing a comedy, you finish a scene and look over and if he’s laughing, we did something right, and if he’s not, we better figure this out. So, he was a fantastic director and I think just did a beautiful job with the film.

MF: Earlier this year, you talked about speaking to the ‘24’ creators about some ideas to bring back the show in some way and that there were steps being taken to move forward. Are there any updates that you can give us on that?

KS: You’d have to ask Howard Gordon how he was approached, but he did come up with what I thought was a really good idea. So, he wrote a piece, and I really enjoyed it. That’s kind of where we’re at and we’ll see if it gets made. But, you know, at this stage, I thought it was a really good idea, and that’s where we’re kind of at.

MF: Is Jack Bauer still locked up in a Russian prison?

KS: Yeah. So, he’s been there for a while, and he’s not happy about it.

MF: Finally, I know that you are shooting the upcoming movie ‘Father Joe’ right now. What has it been like working with the legendary Al Pacino on that project?

KS: Working with Al Pacino, you know, they always say, be careful about meeting your idols because they might let you down. That’s the opposite experience that I had with Al Pacino. Al Pacino was everything I’d hoped he’d be. He’s an extraordinarily powerful actor, but he’s a kind human being. So, I just really enjoyed it. I hope when I’m his age that I’m still working as well.

While ‘24’ fans eagerly await news on more potential time with Jack Bauer, Sutherland has been keeping busy with other projects.

He’s currently at work on drama ‘Father Joe,’ which co-stars Al Pacino, and has others at various stages of production, including comedy drama TV movie ‘Tinsel Town’ (due November 28) and action thriller ‘Sierra Madre’ (which has yet to lock down a date).

When will ‘Hour of Reckoning’ be on screens?

The production team has the rights to distribute the movie up for sale at this year’s American Film Market, so once it lands a home, we’ll know more about when it could head to theaters (or streaming).

The new movie stars Sutherland (who also joins the project as producer) as the title character, a man of faith who wages a violent war against the city’s criminal underworld.

Pacino plays a powerful mob boss whose empire collides with Father Joe’s crusade. Anderson plays a young woman caught between danger and redemption under Joe’s guidance.

Here’s what Sutherland had to say about joining the movie:

“I have been a fan of Luc Besson going back to ‘Subway’. As a director and a writer, he has a unique capacity to weave drama and action together without sacrificing either. I’m so excited about this opportunity to work with him as the writer of ‘Father Joe’ and director Barthélémy Grossmann. I can’t wait to get started.”

Sutherland was most recently seen in movies including ‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’ and ‘Juror #2’. On the small screen, he starred in paranoia-fueled TV series ‘Rabbit Hole.’

Oscar winner Pacino was in the likes of ‘The Ritual’ and is in post-production on Shakespeare adaptation ‘Lear Rex’.

As for Anderson, the young rising star has also appeared in ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ and ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’ (directed by her father, Paul WS Anderson and starring her mother, Milla Jovovich). Coming up, she has a role in mystery TV series ‘The Artist.’

When will ‘Father Joe’ be on screens?

Now Sutherland himself has offered a hopeful update during an interview on Canadian radio show Montreal Now with Aaron Rand

This is what Sutherland had to say:

“[Latest showrunner and executive producer] Howard Gordon has come up with an idea that I like. Before, the material had not been written, so I would have to say, ‘I’m not the one that’s in the way.’ But something has been written. I think it’s really good. I think it’s really strong.”

    What’s the story of ‘24’?

    The cast of '24'.
The cast of ’24’. Photo: 20th Century Fox Television.

The original series, created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran for Fox television, originally ran for nine seasons between 2001 and 2014, and spawned a television film called ‘Redemption’ in 2008.

Sutherland starred as Jack Bauer, an agent from the U.S. government’s fictitious Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). His usual missions involved running around Los Angeles and beyond thwarting terrorist threats such as a nuclear explosion. Each season depicted 24 hours in real time (though you thankfully didn’t see him go to the toilet).

Bauer was famous for his slightly violent attitude to law enforcement, and he wasn’t above torturing suspects to get the information he needed.

And other characters, such as his daughter Kim (played by Elisha Cuthbert) sometimes found themselves in more ridiculous situations (just say the word “cougar” to any fan and they’ll know what you mean).

In 2017, a spin-off called ‘24: Legacy’ aired for one season, starring Corey Hawkins.

What else did Sutherland have to say about a potential return to ‘24’?

Kiefer Sutherland in season 1 of '24'.
Kiefer Sutherland in season 1 of ’24’. Photo: 20th Century Fox Television.

Sutherland had more to say about our chances of more Jack on screens:

“ ‘24’ was originally with Fox. Now it’s owned by Disney because of what Fox has sold off, and so it has to go through different channels before it’s either approved or disapproved. Like everybody else, it’s something I would really like to do. I would like to close that story. It was left kind of wide open. So, fingers crossed. There’s a chance. We’ve taken some considerable steps forward.”

You might recall that last year, there was chatter about a movie in development at Disney, so chances are this is what Sutherland means.

When would more ‘24’ be on screens?

As Kiefer himself admits, it’s currently up to the studio to want to make more. But given Disney’s love for IP it can utilize, it’s not impossible to think Jack might be unleashed upon the world once more.

If ‘Juror #2,’ the 40th film directed by Clint Eastwood, is indeed the 94-year-old screen legend’s final offering, it doesn’t play like the work of someone with one foot out the soundstage door. While it doesn’t make an airtight case for itself, ‘Juror #2’ is an absorbing courtroom thriller and moral melodrama, in which two men with everything to lose in a homicide case feel the screws tightening around them – but only one knows the truth.

While Eastwood has had his ups and downs with his last few films – ‘Cry Macho’ was thin at best, while ‘Richard Jewell’ was terrific and ‘The Mule’ was somewhere in between – ‘Juror #2’ is in many ways the filmmaker at his best, with sturdy, no-nonsense direction, rich cinematography (from Yves Bélanger), and a nuanced story brought to life by a stacked cast. But the script by Jonathan Abrams admittedly has some pretty large holes in it as well, and labors to gloss them over with varying degrees of success. That it still manages to be a gripping, old-fashioned courtroom potboiler is a testament to a crafty filmmaker who still knows how to tell a story efficiently.

“We’re only as sick as our secrets,” says a sponsor at the AA meeting attended by Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult), a journalist, recovering alcoholic and soon-to-be-dad who’s hoping to get out of jury duty in his mid-sized Georgia town so that he can be ready to help his wife Allison (Zoey Deutch) when their baby arrives. But Justin ends up being selected for what seems to be a cut-and-dried case: reformed drug dealer James Michael Sythe (Gabriel Basso) is accused of murdering his girlfriend Kendall (Francesca Eastwood) in a rage after she storms out of a bar on a rainy night after they have a fight.

Except that it turns out Justin himself has a whopper of a secret; without giving away too much, he realizes not long into the trial that he is connected to the case in a deeply troubling manner. How he ascertains this – and how his connection comes about in the first place – is the first spot where Jonathan Abrams’ screenplay strains credibility, especially as other key figures like prosecutor Faith Killebrew (Toni Collette) and public defender Eric Resnick (Chris Messina) seem to miss what is staring them right in the face.

But even with the script’s implausibilities (others of which come to the fore later as well), many more aspects of the film keep the viewer hooked and the drama moving forward. Drawing on elements of ‘Rashomon’ and, of course, ’12 Angry Men,’ Justin takes on the role of lone holdout, gradually chipping away at some of the other jurors’ initial impulse to immediately convict. One of those other jurors is Harold (J.K. Simmons), who has a secret of his own but also a burgeoning sense that not all is right with the case. He decides to look deeper on his own – although that leads to another of those pesky plot holes.

Nevertheless, the movie is never less than compelling, as Eastwood’s unobtrusive filmmaking and mostly uncluttered way with narrative keep the suspense and tension high. The film also touches on a number of issues, including the nature of truth, the requirements and morality of law enforcement, and the very concept of justice itself (“sometimes the truth isn’t justice,” intones someone near the end), although it never quite gives them their full day in court. This is a melodrama after all. And although the jury’s out on whether the ending works – it plays out in stages, almost a montage, instead of a cathartic climactic scene — the final open-ended image is a haunting one.

Nicholas Hoult – who’s set for major roles in ‘Nosferatu’ later this year and ‘Superman’ next summer – has been building an impressive body of work since we first saw him in ‘About a Boy.’ As a leading man here, he’s nothing short of terrific, believably portraying a young man, haunted by his own demons, who’s been putting his life in order and is now ready to do anything to protect what he’s built. He and Zoey Deutch have a nice, natural rhythm together as a married couple, and Deutch’s turn from chipper mom-to-be to a woman slowly realizing that the ground could abruptly slide out from under her is organically handled.

It’s a credit to wonderful actors like J.K. Simmons, Toni Collette, and Chris Messina that they can take some thinly-drawn characters and make them breathe. Simmons fares the best, as a man with a true moral compass, but he also sort of vanishes from the story long before it ends. Collette and Messina both draw sympathetic portraits of friends who are also opponents and understand each other’s motivations, although their lives seem confined to the courthouse and the local bar (a subplot about Collette running for district attorney seems tacked on as well). As for the rest of the jurors, only Cedric Yarbrough makes a lasting impression as Marcus. And Kiefer Sutherland is wasted as a lawyer whose only purpose is to provide two scenes’ worth of exposition for Hoult.

    Final Thoughts

The greatest crime about ‘Juror #2’ is the way it’s coming out: Warner Bros. Pictures plans to open the film on no more than 50 screens, after initially earmarking it for a streaming debut on Max. It seems like an ignominious way to play off Clint Eastwood, whose career and accomplishments with the studio – both in terms of awards and box office – stretch back for decades. But it’s a different world now.

What makes it just as inexplicable is that ‘Juror #2,’ despite its flaws, is a fine film. Unlike some other veteran filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, who have recently attempted grand statements with very uneven success, Eastwood’s unfussy, straightforward movies mostly tend to hit their mark and deliver the kind of high-end, well-made adult drama that once would have packed auditoriums. It’s a shame that studio marketing departments seem no longer capable of presenting these sturdy, entertaining films to a public that might still enjoy them. If ‘Juror #2’ does end up being Clint Eastwood’s sign-off, then he’s guilty as hell of retiring in style.

‘Juror #2’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

What is the plot of ‘Juror #2’?

A husband and father-to-be (Nicholas Hoult) is selected to be on the jury for a high-profile homicide trial, only to realize that he has a tremendous – and potentially dangerous – conflict of interest. Now he must decide on the right course of action before it’s too late and justice is not served.

    • A ‘24’ is in the works.
    • The movie adapts the action thriller series.
    • Star Kiefer Sutherland has yet to be confirmed as returning.

It’s been a few years since we saw Kiefer Sutherland running around and barking orders into a phone on ‘24‘, while a relentless digital clock ticked down and danger lurked off every exit of Los Angeles’ freeways.

Now, though, Brian Grazer –– whose Imagine Entertainment company produced the show –– has told CNBC show ‘Squawk Box’ that he and 20th Century Studios are in the early stages of development on a movie based on the show.

    What’s the story of ‘24’?

    The cast of '24'.

What has Kiefer Sutherland previously said about a new take on ‘24’?

Sutherland has commented in the past that he’d be up to return, though perhaps not as the star this time, especially given the physical toll involved in bringing Bauer to screens.

Here’s what he said to Entertainment Weekly last year:

“Howard [Gordon] and I talk all the time and invariably it comes up. The idea of him being brought back –– I’m just spitballing –– I think that’s an interesting idea. You introduce a new cast of people in their effort to get him out, and it lives on from that point. There’s a lot of ways to go about it. I also think it’s such a great idea to take a 24-hour moment in somebody’s life that is desperate –– and that could be a fireman; that could be so many different circumstances. It boggles my mind that someone hasn’t come along and said, ‘Well, we need to do *this* with it.’ So whether it involves me or not, I just think that to do something in real time is so clever –– difficult, but clever –– that I find it kind of shocking that it hasn’t manifested itself into something else and/or bigger.”

Sutherland has yet to sign on at this point

When will the ‘24’ movie be on screens?

With the movie at such an early stage, even Disney wouldn’t set a release date just yet. And you’d probably need Jack Bauer-level skills to discover their plans.

Sutherland was born in St. John, Canada in 1935.

As a child, he battled various illnesses, including polio, hepatitis, and rheumatic fever. Despite his health challenges, Sutherland pursued his education at the University of Toronto, where he earned dual degrees in engineering and drama. But once the acting bug bit, he studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before landing roles in British TV shows and movies such as ‘The Avengers’ and ‘The Saint.’

‘Saint’ star Roger Moore recommended him to the producers of ‘The Dirty Dozen’, taking his movie career to the next level.

The success of ‘The Dirty Dozen’ led to his iconic role as Hawkeye Pierce in the critically acclaimed ‘M*A*S*H’ in 1970, which cemented his status as a leading man. Throughout his career, Sutherland has showcased his versatility by taking on diverse roles in films such as 1971’s ‘Klute’, where his work and relationship with Jane Fonda sparked his activism, horror ‘Don’t Look Now’ (famous –– or perhaps infamous –– for the speculation of the reality of his sex scene with co-star Julie Christie), ‘Ordinary People’, ‘JFK’ ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘The Italian Job‘ (2003) and the 1978 version of ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’.

More recently, he garnered attention and a new generation of fans for his portrayal of the villainous President Snow in the ‘Hunger Games’ movies.

Sutherland scored Golden Globes and Emmys for his TV work, and while he was never nominated for an Oscar, he did receive an Honorary Oscar in 2017.

Sutherland had five children: sons Kiefer, Roeg, Rossif and Angus, a daughter, Rachel.

Kiefer is the best known among them, since he followed in his father’s performing footsteps. The duo starred together in projects several times throughout the years, including the movies ‘Max Dugan Returns’, ‘Forsaken’ and ‘A Time to Kill’.

Here’s what the younger Sutherland had to say about his father’s passing:

“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”

Sutherland was married three times, firstly to Lois Hardwick, from 1959 to 1966. His second, to actress Shirley Douglas, spanned 1966 to 1971 and produced Kiefer and Rachel. He’s survived by his third wife, Canadian actress Francine Racette, with whom he had Roeg, Rossif and Angus.

    • J.K. Simmons is part of the cast of Clint Eastwood’s latest film.
    • He’ll be a juror in the legal thriller.
    • The film has yet to lock down a release date.

Given how fast he works –– even at the age of 93 –– Clint Eastwood is already finished shooting his new movie, ‘Juror #2’. The movie had to shut down production when the actors’ strike hit but geared back up again in early November and is now in the editing stage.

Deadline has learned that J.K. Simmons joined the film and will appear as one of the jurors.

What’s the story of the new movie?

Written by Jonathan Abrams, ‘Juror #2’ will follow a member of the jury of a murder trial who suspects he may have had some part in the victim’s death –– in fact, possibly killed them himself in a vehicular accident –– and is caught in a moral conundrum of whether to use his secret to sway the jury away and protect himself or turn himself in to the justice system he is participating in.

Nicholas Hoult is playing the lead role of the juror, Justin Kemp, with Toni Collette as the district attorney on the case.

Eastwood had reportedly been weighing several scripts and in recent months zeroed in on this film as his likely final project.

Alongside Hoult, Collette and now Simmons, the film also stars Gabriel Basso (accused), Zoey Deutch (Kemp’s wife), Leslie Bibb (juror), Chris Messina (public defender) and Kiefer Sutherland’s (Kemp’s AA sponsor)

The actor, who won an Oscar for ‘Whiplash’, might be most recognizable to genre fans as J. Jonah Jameson, the grumpy Daily Bugle editor he played across Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy (and who has popped up since in Jon Watts’ take on the story as an alt-universe variant of Jameson who fronts a web news series).

He has a role in upcoming thriller ‘You Can’t Run Forever’ directed by his wife Michelle Schumacher. And he’ll be seen in action thriller ‘The Union’, starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry.

In addition to those projects, he’s playing a swole Santa in the Dwayne Johnson/Chris Evans holiday film ‘Red One’, though that won’t be released until next year’s Christmas season.

When will ‘Juror #2’ be in theaters?

As of right now, ‘Juror #2’ is still awaiting a release date. There is a chance that Warner Bros. will look to release the movie close to awards season next year, touting it as Eastwood’s final film.

  • ‘Rabbit Hole’ Interview: Kiefer Sutherland Talks New Series

    jaQ6fRhC

Premiering on Paramount+ March 26th is the new spy thriller series ‘Rabbit Hole,’ which was created by ‘Focus’ directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra.

What is the plot of ‘Rabbit Hole?’

In ‘Rabbit Hole,’ John Weir (Kiefer Sutherland), a master of deception in the world of corporate espionage, is framed for murder by powerful forces with the ability to influence and control populations.

Who is in the cast of ‘Rabbit Hole?’

‘Rabbit Hole’ stars Kiefer Sutherland (’24,’ ‘Designated Survivor’), Charles Dance (‘The Golden Child’) as Dr. Ben Wilson, Meta Golding (‘Empire’) as Hailey Winton, Enid Graham (‘Mare of Easttown’) as Josephine “Jo” Madi, Jason Butler Harner (‘Ozark’) as Valence, Walt Klink (‘Arctic Circle’) as The Intern and Rob Yang (‘The Menu’) as Edward Homm.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kiefer Sutherland about his work on ‘Rabbit Hole,’ the new series, his character, working with the writers, and why he wanted to do the show.

Kiefer Sutherland stars on Paramount+'s 'Rabbit Hole.'
Kiefer Sutherland stars on Paramount+’s ‘Rabbit Hole.’

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Sutherland, Charles Dance, Meta Golding, Walt Klink, Enid Graham, Rob Yang, and series creators John Requa and Glenn Ficarra.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about returning to the espionage thriller genre after ’24,’ and what was it that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa told you about the series to get you excited about doing it?

Kiefer Sutherland: Well, they referenced movies that I really admired and loved growing up watching as a young person. Those movies were ‘Three Days of the Condor’ with Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman in ‘Marathon Man,’ ‘The Parallax View,’ and ‘The Fugitive.’ So once they told me about that, the thriller is a genre that I love working in, and I’m a huge fan of them as writers and directors. They started describing John Weir as a character, and then the thing they touched on almost out of the gate was that this character would go from being the hunter to the hunted in a matter of moments, and that he was then spending the rest of the series running for his life and trying to prove his innocence. That was a very dynamic shift, and any time you can take someone and make them go 180 degrees in the other direction, it gives an actor a lot of room to work and makes that character very vulnerable. So just in that first discussion, I knew it was something that I really wanted to do and I was grateful that they called me first because I don’t think anybody would’ve said no. I was just thrilled to be a part of it, and when I got the script, I was certainly not let down. I thought it was fantastic and couldn’t wait to get started making it. Now I’m finally at a place where I can’t wait for people to finally see it. But we’re very proud of it.

MF: Did you receive scripts for the entire season, or are you going one script at a time while you’re building your character?

KS: We got about half the season up front and then got the other half as we went, which was a lot better than any other experience I’ve had before because television, normally you’re writing as you’re working, which makes making the show very complicated. So it was very nice actually to have half of the material in advance. Then they’re just really beautiful writers in the sense that they can deliver the plot lines and the big ideas, but they’ve also got such subtlety and nuance. One of the really nice benefits for me with this character is that he has a sense of humor, finally. So the romantic, kind of sarcastic banter between Meta (Golding), who plays opposite me is just really special. It’s also something that I don’t normally get asked to do. So it was a lot of fun for me.

MF: Finally, can you talk about John Weir’s background and how he got to the place where we find him at the beginning of this series?

KS: Well, I think he has a number of skills, but I think his understanding of the human psyche is really important. So it allows him to run scams on people that allow them to believe that the market is going in one direction, when in fact it’s not. He can manipulate technology so that the truth is what he wants the truth to be, and he uses that to his advantage to help the companies that are employing him. Very quickly in the first episode, that is turned on him and he again goes from the hunter to the hunted and is literally running for his life.

  • Trailer for ‘They Cloned Tyrone’

    hYbNxyf8

Of all the various shows and movies teased by Netflix as part of its big “TUDUM” virtual event this weekend, perhaps one of the most unexpected – and certainly the wackiest – was the pulpy, pointed mystery caper ‘They Cloned Tyrone’, which stars John Boyega, ‘WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx.

They’re starring in the new movie, which tells the story of Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris), Slick (Jamie Foxx), and Fontaine (John Boyega), three unlikely friends who are brought together by their shared discovery of a massive, secret governmental surveillance plan to monitor the lives of Black people before disappearing them and replacing them with clones.

It’s hard to tell from the trailer just what the end goal of snatching people up is, or how three conspiracy theorists are supposed to take down that sort of operation on their own. But they’re going to give it a shot.

This first look at the movie proves it’s certainly going for a 1980s vibe, and a campy one (check out Foxx and Parris duetting on a funky number in an elevator, using their guns as microphones) though with definite hints that there’s some serious social commentary lurking a few layers deeper.

    J. Alphonse Nicholson, Robert Tinsley, David Alan Grier, James Moses Black, Megan Sousa, Joshua Michel, Charity Jordan, Tamberla Perry and, though he doesn’t show up in this first burst of footage, Kiefer Sutherland, are all part of the cast.

Teyonah Parris as YO-YO, Jamie Foxx (Producer) as Slick Charles, and John Boyega as Fontaine in 'They Cloned Tyrone.'

‘They Cloned Tyrone’ is directed by ‘Creed II’ and ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy‘ scriptwriter Juel Taylor, who makes his directorial debut and shares a writing credit on this with Tony Rettenmaier.

Boyega’s having a good year so far – between ‘The Woman King’ and ‘Breaking’, he’s been scoring praise for his work, even if he did end up departing another Netflix project, ‘Rebel Ridge’, in 2021. And outside of the streamer, he has fans excited by gearing up to finally appear in a sequel to cult sci-fi pic ‘Attack the Block’ with director Joe Cornish.

Foxx, meanwhile, has been on a run of collaborations with the streaming service – he’s been a conflicted action hero for 2020’s ‘Power Project’ and took down vampires in this year’s thriller ‘Day Shift’. He’s scheduled to be seen next year opposite an “un-retired” Cameron Diaz in action comedy ‘Back in Action’.

As for Parris, she’ll be back as ‘WandaVision’s Monica Rambeau for ‘Captain Marvel’ sequel ‘The Marvels’, sharing screen time with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers who, of course, was best friends with her mother Maria (Lashana Lynch in that first film) and an inspiration for young Monica (played then by Akira Akbar).

Scheduled for release on July 28, 2023, ‘The Marvels’ will also see ‘Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) finally meeting her superhero idol.

Netflix has yet to confirm a release date for ‘They Cloned Tyrone’.
