9 Things You Never Knew About ‘Moon’ on its 10th Anniversary

    Sony Pictures Classics

Ten years ago, newcomer Duncan Jones made a big splash with his directorial debut, “Moon.” Not just a promising start to a memorable career, “Moon”is now regarded as one of the best science fiction films of the 21st Century. Relive the strange odyssey of Sam Bell by learning more about the making of “Moon” and its unexpected connection to another of Jones’ films.

    1. While “Moon” was written specifically with Sam Rockwell in mind, Rockwell was initially unsure about joining the project. Patty Considine was chosen as his potential replacement until Rockwell officially signed on.

    2. “Moon” was shot in 33 days on a modest budget of $5 million.

    Sony Pictures Classics

    3. In order to cut down on expenses, the crew used several sets that had been built for the canceled “Red Dwarf” movie.

    4. Kevin Spacey (ew) didn’t sign on to voice GERTY until he was allowed to watch the entire film first, at which point he eagerly recorded his lines in a single day.

    Sony Pictures Classics

    5. Sam’s plants are nicknamed “Ridley” and “Kathryn,” references to acclaimed directors Ridley Scott and Kathryn Bigelow.

    6. When it came time to film the scene where Sam is hit on the head, Rockwell’s designated stuntman was absent from the set. Producer Stuart Fenegan decided to fill in instead.

    Sony Pictures Classics

    7. The rescue team is codenamed “Eliza,” which is believed to be a reference to an MIT computer program from the 1960’s named ELIZA. This program was designed to mimic bland human conversation when speaking to operators, much as GERTY does when interacting with Sam.

    8. Jones’ 2018 film “Mute” is actually a spinoff set in the same universe as “Moon.” Sam and his surviving clones can be seen in courtroom footage being broadcast on TV.

    9. Jones has said he hopes to eventually release a third film in the “Moon” universe to create a trilogy of interconnected films.

  • Andrew Lincoln Makes List of World’s Highest-Paid TV Actors for Final ‘Walking Dead’ Season

Andrew Lincoln Makes List of World’s Highest-Paid TV Actors for Final ‘Walking Dead’ Season

    AMC

Andrew Lincoln has joined Forbes‘ list of the 10 highest-paid TV actors for the first time.

That time coincides with 1) his final season — only five episodes — of “The Walking Dead“; and 2) Kevin Spacey being dumped from “House of Cards.”

As Forbes noted, the only actor on the 2018 list to drop off the previous year’s ranking is Kevin Spacey, who was axed from his lead role of Frank Underwood in the final season of “House of Cards.”

It’s possible that if Spacey hadn’t been called out for so many alleged misdeeds, and filmed his final season, he would’ve taken Lincoln’s spot.

Apparently Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) made $11 million for his five episodes of “The Walking Dead” Season 9. Forbes suspects Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) will replace Andrew Lincoln on this list next year, since Reedus reportedly negotiated a raise to stay on after Lincoln leaves.

The ranking charts earnings from June 2017 to June 2018. Forbes said the 10 actors on this list made a combined $181 million, down from $185 million in the same period last year. It really is tough out there for men!

Most of these actors are familiar from making this list every year for their high-rated comedy series:

    The World’s Highest-Paid Actors 2018

    No. 1. Jim Parsons
    Earnings: $26.5 million
    “The Big Bang Theory”

    No. 2. Johnny Galecki

    “Big Bang Theory”

    No. 3. (tie) Simon Helberg
    $23.5 million
    “Big Bang Theory”

    No. 3. (tie) Kunal Nayyar
    $23.5 million
    “Big Bang Theory”

    No. 5. Mark Harmon
    $19 million
    “NCIS”

    No. 6. Ed O’Neill
    $14 million
    “Modern Family”

    No. 7. Eric Stonestreet
    $13.5 million
    “Modern Family”

    No. 8. Jesse Tyler Ferguson
    $13 million
    “Modern Family”

    No. 9. Ty Burrell
    $12 million
    “Modern Family”

    No. 10. Andrew Lincoln
    $11 million
    “The Walking Dead”

That list is going to break wide open once “The Big Bang Theory” and “Modern Family” end. TBBT is ending after Season 12, so we’ll see how this ranking shakes up after that.

    CBS

“The Walking Dead” has long been the most-watched and highest-rated cable show, but it has taken MAJOR hits in the past couple of years. This year, so far, is TWD’s lowest-rated yet in that advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic.

AMC has already revealed Andrew Lincoln’s final episode airs in early November. It’s possible the show will slide even further into ratings oblivion without him. Then again, the hardcore fans who watch every week seem to be sticking with it to the end. As long as they stick around, AMC may continue long into the double digit seasons.

  • ‘House of Cards’ Final Season Teaser Confirms Frank Underwood Is Dead

‘House of Cards’ Final Season Teaser Confirms Frank Underwood Is Dead

    House of Cards Season 6
    Netflix

    Savage.

Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) clearly isn’t in mourning for her late husband, Francis “Frank” Underwood (Kevin Spacey).

Netflix’s new teaser for “House of Cards” Season 6, the final season, shows the widow at the former president’s grave — revealing they buried Frank in his family’s “backyard,” next to the father he despised.

Claire takes a moment to throw some final shade at her predecessor:

“I’ll tell you this, though, Francis. When they bury me, it won’t be in my backyard. And when they pay their respects, they’ll have to wait in line.”

Ah, Claire. Still cold. Still petty. We missed you.

    So Frank is dead?

    (Like Kevin Spacey’s career?)

It’ll be interesting to see how they kill off the POTUS.

Unless this is a fake-out. But it doesn’t seem like it could be, considering all of the behind-the-scenes drama, and the fact that Kevin Spacey won’t be in this season at all.

What else are they going to do — send Frank into Witness Protection?

Kevin Spacey was fired from “House of Cards” after multiple allegations of misconduct, including from people who worked on the series.

Netflix decided to move forward with a shortened final season without Spacey — and Frank Underwood. So Robin Wright is now at the helm for the final eight episodes, following President Claire Underwood.

“House of Cards” Season 6 premieres November 2 on Netflix.

Robin Wright is now steering the ship for the final season of “House of Cards.” She just spoke out for the first time on the Kevin Spacey scandal, in an interview with “Today.”

Spacey — who played Frank Underwood to her Claire Underwood — was fired from “House of Cards” after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, including several from staffers on the Netflix series .Just last week, three more people came forward against Spacey.

“House of Cards” Season 6, the final season, will premiere on Netflix this fall.

Savannah Guthrie asked Robin Wright how the HoC team reacted to the news about Spacey:

“I think we were all surprised, of course, and ultimately saddened,” Wright said. “We forged ahead. We were so thankful that we were able to complete the series as planned.”

Guthrie — who is familiar with this awkward subject herself as Matt Lauer’s former co-anchor — asked Wright if there was anything in the years of working with Spacey that would’ve made her think something like this was possible:

“We were co-workers, really. Never socialized outside of work. Respectful, professional relationship. He was so great with me. He was never disrespectful to me. so that’s my personal experience. That’s the only thing I feel that I have the right to talk about. […]

Kevin and I knew each other between action and cut, and in between setups, where we would giggle. I didn’t know the man. I knew the incredible craftsman that he is.”

Asked if she felt Netflix made the right decision to cut ties with Spacey, Wright answered:

“I don’t know how to comment on that. But I think at that time, the shock was so intense all over the nation — for many reasons, many stories, many people — I think that everybody felt that it was respectful to back off.”

Robin Wright said she hadn’t heard from Kevin Spacey and didn’t even know how to contact him.

Meanwhile, on July 4th, Netflix shared a brief teaser to promote the new season, with Claire Underwood wishing herself a Happy Independence Day:

The final season ended filming in May, and Robin Wright shared a thank you message to the cast and crew. There’s no premiere date yet for the final season beyond this fall.

  • ‘House of Cards’ Will Return for Shortened Final Season Without Kevin Spacey

After House of Cards” following mounting accusations of sexual assault and harassment, the future of the series was called into question. Now, the streaming service has revealed that it does indeed plan to give the show a proper send-off — without its iconic leading man.

It had previously been announced that “House of Cards” would end after its upcoming sixth season, and that is still the plan, according to Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, who discussed the series during an appearance at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York on Monday. Sarandos said that he had been working with production company Media Rights Capital (MRC) to figure out how — or if — the show should move forward in the wake of the Spacey scandal, and all parties finally came to a decision on how best to wrap the series.

“It’ll be an eight episode season that’ll start production early ’18, and it will not involve Kevin Spacey,” Sarandos announced on Monday. “It will star Robin Wright. And we’re really excited about bringing some closure to the show for fans.”

According to the Netflix exec, it was also important to bring some closure to the crew that works on the series, which shoots in Baltimore and employs hundreds of locals. Production had already begun on season six when the Spacey scandal broke, and shut down indefinitely while Netflix and MRC hashed out an end game.

Variety reports that one way the show may explain Spacey’s absence is to kill off his character, Frank Underwood. Sarandos didn’t divulge any details about how the show will handle its star’s exit, so fans will have to wait and see for themselves what happens.

There’s no word yet on when season six of “House of Cards” will premiere. Production will resume early next year.

  • ‘House of Cards’ Production Shut Down Indefinitely in Wake of Kevin Spacey Allegations

Netflix has shut down production on the sixth and final season of “House of Cards,” following the controversy surrounding star Kevin Spacey.

In a joint statement released to Deadline, the streaming service and production company MRC confirmed that production — which had just started in Baltimore, Maryland — would now pause indefinitely while execs deal with the fallout from allegations that Spacey made unwanted sexual advances toward actor Anthony Rapp when Rapp was only 14. On Monday, Spacey issued an apology to Rapp, but claimed he did not remember the alleged incident.

    Here’s the statement in full:

“MRC and Netflix have decided to suspend production on ‘House of Cards’ season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew.”

Deadline reports that the cast and crew were informed of the decision to shut down on Tuesday morning. That follows another joint statement from Netflix and MRC issued on Monday, in which the companies said they were “deeply troubled” by Rapp’s accusation, and were sending representatives to Baltimore to speak with the cast and crew directly, in order to “ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported.”

It was also announced on Monday that season six would be the last for “House of Cards,” though it’s unclear if the decision to end the series had already been made, or if the show was cancelled in response to the Spacey allegations. Season six was previously scheduled to debut on Netflix sometime in mid 2018, but we’ll have to wait and see when (or if) production resumes to know more about its future.

  • Netflix Developing ‘House of Cards’ Spinoffs

“House of Cards” may be folding, but Netflix is looking to deal a new deck.

Yesterday brought the news that the still-in-production sixth season of “House of Cards” would be its last. That came on the heels of Anthony Rapp’s sexual assault allegation against Kevin Spacey, and Spacey’s subsequent, much-criticized apology.

Now, Variety reports that the streaming service and producer Media Rights Capital are developing several ideas for a spinoff of “House of Cards.” All are set in the same universe as the original series, which follows Spacey’s Frank Underwood, a scheming politician who rises to become president.

One of the spinoff ideas revolves around Doug Stamper, the political advisor played by Michael Kelly. Eric Roth, a former “House of Cards” executive producer and current EP of TNT’s “The Alienist,” is attached to write the script.

Netflix seems to be following the model of HBO, which is developing several “Game of Thrones” spinoff ideas at once, hoping at least one will stick.

“House of Cards” was Netflix’s first major original series and has garnered many accolades over the years, including Emmy nominations for Best Drama Series, Best Actor for Spacey, and Best Actress for Robin Wright every year since it premiered.

  • Netflix Cancels ‘House of Cards’ After Kevin Spacey Controversy: Report

House Of CardsThe Underwoods have been brought down in a way no one expected: “House of Cards” being canceled.

Netflix is planning to end the series after its upcoming sixth season, Deadline reports. Sources tell the publication that the decision was made in response to “Star Trek: Discovery” actor Anthony Rapp‘s claim that Kevin Spacey once made a sexual advance toward him when Rapp was just 14 years old. The streamer, along with Media Rights Capital, issued a statement Monday that said they were “deeply troubled” by the allegation.

“Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey,” the companies said in a joint statement. “In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

Responding to Rapp’s claim, Spacey said he did not recall the alleged 1986 encounter. However, he added that he was “horrified by the story” and apologized if he “did then behave as [Rapp] describes.” Still, his apology has only sparked further controversy given that it also marked his coming out as gay. Actor Zachary Quinto criticized Spacey, saying it was “sad and troubling” that the “House of Cards” star was coming out “as a calculated manipulation to deflect attention.”

The situation is certainly a fraught one, casting a cloud over the final season of “House of Cards,” which is due out in mid-2018.

  • Kevin Spacey Hosting 2017 Tony Awards

100: The Apollo Celebrates EllaKevin Spacey will host the 2017 Tony Awards.

The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing announced that the Tony winner, Oscar winner, and Emmy nominee will emcee the 71st annual awards, which will be broadcast live on CBS on June 11.

His selection comes after rumors floated that the Tonys were having a difficult time finding a host. The New York Post reported that Tina Fey turned down the gig, as did previous hosts James Corden, Hugh Jackman, and Neil Patrick Harris.

“I was their second choice for ‘Usual Suspects,’ fourth choice for ‘American Beauty’ and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards,” Spacey joked in the announcement. “I think my career is definitely going in the right direction. Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down,” he added.

Spacey, who is starring in a new season of Netflix’s “House of Cards” on May 30, is a decorated actor across stage and screen. He won a Tony in 1991 as Best Featured Actor in a Play for Neil Simon’s “Lost in Yonkers,” and has won two Academy Awards for “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty.”

  • Watch Kevin Spacey Do a Frighteningly Good Impression of Al Pacino

The 39th Annual Kennedy Center HonorsKevin Spacey is an Oscar, Golden Globe, and Tony winner, but he really deserves some kind of award for his amazing celebrity impressions.

The “House of Cards” star showed off maybe his best impression yet last night at the 39th Annual Kennedy Center Honors when he mimicked honoree Al Pacino. Spacey told the audience, including President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, the three steps to doing the “perfect Al Pacino impression.”

The second step involves looking surprised. “Al, for some reason, always looks a little surprised,” Spacey explained. “If you look at his face, it’s like, ‘What just happened? The last thing I remember, I was snorting a wheelbarrow full of cocaine in ‘Scarface,’ and now I’m sitting next to the president. Whoa! How did that happen?”

All joking aside, Spacey paid a warm tribute to his friend and fellow Oscar winner. “Look, the reason that all of us love to do an impersonation of Al Pacino is that he’s created characters that are unforgettable, and that’s because, for Al Pacino, it’s not just business,” he said. “It’s not just business — it’s craft. And I’ve been fortunate enough to know him a long time and work with him. I adore you. Congratulations, my friend.”
