Marvel Boss Reveals Ms. Marvel Isn’t Born Yet During ‘Captain Marvel’ Time Period

    Marvel Studios

Captain Marvel hasn’t met Ms. Marvel. Yet.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has revealed some interesting info about when and how the  Marvel Cinematic Universe might include Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan.

Last year, Feige said the introduction of the Muslim teen superhero was “in the works.”

Then, this month brought the release of the blockbuster “Captain Marvel,” which teases fans when young Monica Rambeau says she wants to “learn to glow” like her Aunt Carol (Brie Larson).  Comic book spoiler alert: She eventually does.

So, Monica’s inclusion sparked the question of whether Kamala — who is inspired by Captain Marvel’s heroic deeds — had already been slyly introduced in the MCU. Nope, says Feige.

“No. No. I mean Monica you’ve mentioned and it’s not hidden. Obviously. It’s right there,” he told ScreenRant. “The answer is no, ’cause I think Ms. Marvel is a contemporary story and I don’t think she was born yet.”

Of course, “Captain Marvel” takes place in 1995. Carol flies off and doesn’t return to Earth for 23 years, after Thanos’ snap. So, nobody knows who she is or what she can do … yet.

When “Avengers: Endgame” takes place, it’s entirely possible Kamala has been born and is a teenager who witnesses Carol help avenge the fallen.  Perhaps she’s an admiring bystander in Jersey City in an end credits scene.

  • No, the Black Widow Movie Won’t Be Rated R

No, the Black Widow Movie Won’t Be Rated R

    Walt Disney Pictures

The rumor that the upcoming “Black Widow” solo film was going to get an R-rating? Totally unfounded, says Marvel’s Kevin Feige.

Talking to ComicBook.com, the Marvel Studio President shot down that particular rumor for good. “Yes. Correct,” he told the site when asked if the R-rating was just so much Internet hot air.

“It never was going to be,” Feige said. “Somebody writes, ‘I hear it’s R-rated!’ And then everybody writes it up.”

At this point, all we know about the film is that Scarlett Johansson will be reprising the title character, of course. And that Cate Shortland (“Berlin Syndrome”) will be directing from a script by Jac Schaeffer, who’s also writing at least an episode of the Disney+ “The Vision and Scarlet Witch” series.

The Black Widow movie does not yet have a release date, but is rumored to be out sometime next year.

Other Marvel movies we’re expecting:  a “Black Panther” sequel and a second “Doctor Strange” movie. As for the third “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, that’s off for the books for now.

The “X-Men” franchise will continue to be in good hands.

After 20th Century Fox merges into Disney, the comic book franchise will stand alongside its Marvel siblings, which means it’s likely Marvel studio boss Kevin Feige will take over its direction. And producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who has worked on every “X-Men” film thinks that’s a good thing.

“Kevin (Feige) and I started the first movie, he worked for me, he has a great story sense when it comes to weaving each world together, I trust him and I trust where he will take it,” Shuler-Donner told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour.

Shuler-Donner touched on a few “X-Men”-related topics, including the prospect of casting a new Wolverine to replace Hugh Jackman.

“YI don’t know what Kevin’s thinking honestly. I don’t even think Kevin knows. I think Kevin’s still dealing with this wealth of characters and trying to make sense of them,” she said.

“Because Hugh, just the physicality of it all, just to bulk up … This man worked so hard to bulk up, would get up at four in the morning to bulk and eat protein meals every two hours because his natural state, they used to call him Worm when he was a kid. So his natural state is a very skinny guy. Once you reach a certain age, the body just won’t go anymore. I think he was wise to say, ‘I’m at that point. I can’t do it.’ Now, that doesn’t mean he can’t come back as older Wolverine. You never know. Future Wolverine, you never know.”

Other projects still in development seem to be on hold, like the movie centered on Gambit, which “was going to be a heist movie,” she said.

As for whether it’ll ever see the light of day, “That is up to Disney. I hope so, but that’s up to them. The problem is you can’t have too many Marvel, X-Men superhero movies out there because we will cancel each other out. Each one has to be distinctive and yet you’ve got ‘The Avengers’ to follow through.

“You’ve got so many distinctive story canons to follow through and yet we want new ones, but I don’t think you can have more than four. Four is a lot because people are going to get sick of them so we have to be careful.”

Fans’ theory about the “Avengers: Endgame” marketing strategy isn’t far off, and that means Marvel will be doing some withholding in the coming months.

Marvel President Kevin Feige attended the Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 6, and while he was on the red carpet, MTV News asked him about burning topics such as the studio’s marketing strategy and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” director James Gunn moving to the DCEU.

The question regarding marketing was regarding the theory that studio won’t show anything from past the first 15 minutes of “Avengers: Endgame” in its teasers and trailers to really keep fans in the dark.

“I’d call it somewhat accurate, yeah,” Feige said of the strategy. “Being able to generate excitement without giving away any of the many, many, many, many secrets … would be ideal.”

The Marvel boss also noted that Disney has a talented marketing team, and he expects that they’ll “be able to pull it off.”

Another big issue that came up was Gunn’s franchise swap. He was fired from “Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in July after his old, offensive tweets resurfaced, and he’s since been hired to write and possibly direct the “Suicide Squad” sequel. Still, Feige didn’t seem bothered by the director moving to the MCU’s chief rival.

“I don’t see a rivalry, I see cool films being made,” he said. “And one thing you know about James Gunn, he makes cool films.”

Marvel’s much-anticipated cool film “Avengers: Endgame” hits theaters April 26.

  • ‘Avengers 4’ Trailer Confirmed for ‘Before the End of the Year’

‘Avengers 4’ Trailer Confirmed for ‘Before the End of the Year’

    Avengers: Infinity War
    Marvel Studios

Your eyeballs will behold the glory of the first “Avengers 4” trailer at some point in the next two months.

So protect yourself. Don’t do anything stupid and ruin your chances of seeing it. Maybe just stay home the whole time. School/work will understand.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige previously said we’d get the title for “Avengers 4” toward the end of the year, after the first promotion for “Captain Marvel.” Now that we’ve seen the early “Captain Marvel” promotion, it’s looking like the title and trailer for “Avengers 4” may drop together.

Critics Choice reporter Erick Weber just updated that Feige confirmed a trailer by the end of 2018. It’s late October, so two months remain:

Brushing past Namor and the ill-fated “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” … when do you think we’ll get that “Avengers 4” trailer?

Marvel fans are speculating that the trailer could be tied to an upcoming Disney/Marvel Comics release — including “Ralph Breaks the Internet” on November 21; “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” on December 14; or “Mary Poppins Returns” on December 19.

However, ComicBook added this intriguing note:

“Of course, there’s also been another possibility: November 29, 2018. That date marks the one-year anniversary of the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer, which was one of the most highly-anticipated events in cinema that year. The trailer’s release was touted as a major event, and it resulted in one of YouTube’s most-viewed movie trailers of all time, wracking up millions of views in record time.”

November 29 is a Thursday this year. What do you think: “Good Morning America” drop that morning, or “Jimmy Kimmel Live” that night — with an appearance from the cast?

The November guess fits with previous speculation on the release of the first “Avengers 4” trailer. That was also mostly based on what Marvel had done before.

So, if that’s the case, your eyeballs will behold the glory of the “Avengers 4” trailer in just one month. Keep a box of tissues on standby for whenever this thing drops, ’cause there’s no way the follow-up to “Avengers: Infinity War” won’t flex your emotions.

“Avengers 4” is currently scheduled for release in U.S. theaters on May 3, 2019.

  • Mark Ruffalo ‘Fired’ for Spoiling ‘Avengers 4’ Title

Mark Ruffalo ‘Fired’ for Spoiling ‘Avengers 4’ Title

Mark Ruffalo on The Tonight Show
    NBC

Mark Ruffalo has a reputation for spoiling “Avengers” plots. You know it. He knows it. So he had some fun with it.

While on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” The Hulk actor “spoiled” the “Avengers 4” title — insisting the news was already out there.

The show bleeped Ruffalo out, going with the gag that it was a huge spoiler:

He was almost certainly just joking around. But you never know. So fans got to work analyzing what was bleeped. This fan came up with “The Last Avenger.”

    https://twitter.com/antovolk/status/1048873100199284736

Was it just a play on “The Last Jedi”? Will the title in fact be “The Last Avenger” — as a bookend to “Captain America: The First Avenger“? A new title rumor floating around suggested it’s “Avengers: Annihilation.” There was early talk that it was “Infinity Gauntlet” before that was shot down. We were pretty fond of the idea that it was “Avengers: End Game,” but the title is supposedly NOT said in “Avengers: Infinity War,” which would rule out “End Game.”

All of this is probably low-key irritating Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. He seems to think the “Avengers 4” title build-up has gotten out of hand. It was never meant to be this deep. But fans caring too much about your studio’s movie is an excellent problem to have.

Joe and Anthony Russo directed both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers 4: Whatever They Call It.” They responded to Mark Ruffalo’s title spoiler as part of this cheeky exchange:

    https://twitter.com/Russo_Brothers/status/1048412243266863104

Haha. The sad part of that joke is that Ruffalo may actually be done with his job as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. No firing necessary. So many changes are ahead in “Avengers 4,” including a goodbye for Chris Evans as Captain America. Chris Hemsworth also said his contract as Thor was ending with “Avengers 4.”

The original Avengers are stepping out of the spotlight. So Ruffalo being “fired” may just be a joke, but his Hulk may indeed take that “final exit” hobo walk off the screen.

“Avengers 4” is currently scheduled to open in the U.S. on May 3, 2019. The title should be officially announced any time now

  • Disney Boss: Kevin Feige Will Oversee Fox’s ‘X-Men,’ Expect a ‘Star Wars’ ‘Slowdown’

Disney Boss: Kevin Feige Will Oversee Fox’s ‘X-Men,’ Expect a ‘Star Wars’ ‘Slowdown’

    Star Wars: The Force Awakens
    Lucasfilm

Disney won’t use The Force as much moving forward.

Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger just talked to The Hollywood Reporter about everything in his vast world — which includes ABC (so they talked “Roseanne”), Marvel (so they talked James Gunn), Lucasfilm (so they talked “Star Wars”), and the newly acquired 21st Century Fox (so they talked “X-Men”).

Comic book fans don’t normally pay close attention to corporate acquisitions, but now that Marvel Studios and Fox’s Marvel properties are in the same family, that means potential X-Men/Deadpool/Fantastic Four crossovers with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers.

    Kevin Feige, Brie Larson
    Marvel Studios

THR asked Iger about that, and got confirmation that Marvel Studios/MCU boss Kevin Feige is going to run the whole combined Marvel show:

How is Marvel going to absorb Fox’s X-Men franchise? Is Kevin Feige going to oversee everything?

I think it only makes sense. I want to be careful here because of what’s been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know. It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn’t be two Marvels.

So Deadpool could become an Avenger?

Kevin’s got a lot of ideas. I’m not suggesting that’s one of them. But who knows?

    Deadpool clapping GIF

    In Feige We Trust.

On to “Star Wars.” The “Star Wars” franchise is hardly in trouble, but the excitement of the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” awakening the galaxy has already led to some fatigue and frustration. The disappointing box office of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” was blamed, in part, on just too many Star Wars movies coming out on top of each other.

    THR asked Iger about that:

Many believe Disney should pump the breaks and not put out a Star Wars movie each year.

I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [‘Game of Thrones’ creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.

“More careful about volume and timing.” So fewer films, and those films will have more breathing room between them to build anticipation. Not sure what that might mean for upcoming standalone films after “Rogue One” and “Solo,” but it doesn’t sound that promising.

    Solo Star Wars
    Lucasfilm

Iger also talked a bit about Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which is expected to launch in late 2019. There’s a lot to chew on in Iger’s THR Q&A, and since Disney pretty much touches every aspect of the pop culture univese, he has a lot of say in what we watch and when — and where — we get to watch it.

  • Marvel to Announce More Female-Led Movies ‘in the Near Future,’ Says Kevin Feige

Marvel to Announce More Female-Led Movies ‘in the Near Future,’ Says Kevin Feige

Evangeline Lilly in Ant-Man and the Wasp
    Walt Disney Pictures

The MCU is full of male headliners, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has promised that its female superheroes will get their chance to shine, too.

The studio head recently discussed the upcoming “Captain Marvel” with Entertainment Weekly, and while doing so, he teased interesting news that may soon come out of the MCU. Apparently, Marvel has some movies featuring female leads on deck.

“With [‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’] and now with ‘Captain Marvel’ and many movies to be announced in the near future, I’m anxious for the time where it’s not a novelty that there is a female-led superhero movie, but it is a norm,” he said.

As EW pointed out, though, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is the first MCU film to have a female title character. That comes after a whopping 19 movies and 10 years. For now, it definitely is a novelty and the next crop of female-led Marvel films will likely still be, too.

Feige said he looks forward to reaching a point where seeing a female hero is no longer a big story because it’s so common. It sounds like his benchmark for knowing we’ve reached that point is when people are asking, “Oh, what’s this about?” and “Who’s this character?” rather than being surprised to see a female hero.

“I think we can get there,” he said.

For many MCU fans, the hope is that Feige is including the “Black Widow” standalone movie in the “many movies to be announced in the near future.” The film recently landed director Cate Shortland, showing that progress is being made. Fans have been calling for the film for several years, and Scarlett Johansson teased in April that it “could be something really special.”

Based on Feige’s comments, we should find out soon.

    Marvel Studios

Kevin Feige is Marvel’s true superhero. He’s the architect behind Marvel Studios, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

All 20 Marvel Cinematic Universe films have opened at the top of the box office. Together, they have grossed more than $17.6 BILLION around the world.

Since Feige is now 45-years-old, he started all of this in his 30s. So get steppin’ out there, all you mogul slackers!

    Iron Man
    Marvel Studios

So, fittingly, Marvel Studios President and producer Kevin Feige is this year’s choice to be honored by the Producers Guild of America with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award. Feige will receive the honor at the 30th annual Producers Guild Awards on January 19, 2019 at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher, PGA presidents: “Kevin Feige set for himself one of the most ambitious tasks ever attempted in cinematic storytelling, and then over-delivered on it. What Kevin has accomplished with Marvel Studios is one of the great success stories of this generation. And now, with ‘Black Panther’ and the upcoming ‘Captain Marvel,’ Kevin has broadened our entire industry’s expectations for what tentpole movies look like — in front of the camera, behind the camera and in the audience. We’re honored that he’s accepted the PGA’s David O. Selznick Award.”

Kevin Feige: “To join so many of my heroes and mentors in receiving the David O. Selznick Award is one of the most meaningful experiences of my career, and I’m truly thankful to my colleagues in the Producers Guild of America for this recognition.I want to also thank my Marvel Studios family, who have been with me every step of the way and without whom I would never have had this amazing journey.”

Past David O. Selznick Award recipients include David Heyman, Stanley Kramer, Billy Wilder, Clint Eastwood, Jerry Bruckheimer, Brian Grazer, Laura Ziskin, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, Scott Rudin and Steven Spielberg. The 2018 recipient was Charles Roven.

Marvel Studios is hot off the successes of “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War” (and “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which is still picking up money overseas). All 20 MCU films are being re-released in IMAX theaters starting today. Next year, the MCU brings us “Captain Marvel” in March, “Avengers 4” in May, and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” in July.

  • ‘Avengers 4’ Trailer May Arrive in November, Fan Suggests Bittersweet Post-Credits Scene

‘Avengers 4’ Trailer May Arrive in November, Fan Suggests Bittersweet Post-Credits Scene

    Avengers: Infinity War
    Marvel Studios

What are we going to do after “Avengers 4“? Sure, there’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” but the hype fans feel for this movie — we need to keep this feeling going somehow.

There’s nothing major going on with “Avengers 4” at the moment, other than the planned “additional photography”/reshoots. But fans have been busy speculating, and offering suggestions.

A few months ago, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said the title of “Avengers 4” would be revealed after the first “Captain Marvel” teaser, later this year.

MCU Cosmic decided to go a bit further, speculating on when we can expect both the “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers 4” trailers.

The site figured that September is a reasonable date for a “Captain Marvel” teaser release, since it’s six months away from the March 2019 “Captain Marvel” premiere. A September teaser would also give Marvel some buffer time before releasing any footage from “Avengers 4.”

Here’s more on that, from MCU Cosmic:

“Which brings us to November. The first teaser trailer for Avengers: Infinity War was released on November 29th, 2017. With Avengers 4 releasing the same time of the year that Infinity War did, it’s very likely that we’ll see the first teaser for the second movie around the same time this year…give or take a week either way.”

First “Avengers 4” footage in November? Yes? No? We’ll see.

One fan already has the end of that film in mind, suggesting this bittersweet scene as a coda to Captain America (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter’s (Hayley Atwell) romantic dance story:

    https://twitter.com/quill_rocket/status/1032934978516996097

    Captain America, Peggy Carter GIF
    Marvel Studios

    Beautiful.

We don’t know what will happen to Cap, but since Chris Evans has made it pretty clear he’s done with the MCU after “Avengers 4,” it’s hard to imagine what else they’d do with the character. And the “Avengers 4” synopsis does mention “sacrifices.”

Speaking of sacrifices, the Russo Brothers — who directed “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers 4” — posted a fan’s video from their Twitter account, and it confused a lot of people into thinking it was a title reveal:

    https://twitter.com/shangkayl/status/1033365329785831441

But most of the replies are from fans demanding Loki be brought back to life. We’ll see if that happens, along with everything else, when “Avengers 4” is released next May. Or April.
