10 Amazing TV Actors You Won’t Believe Have Never Won an Emmy
NBC ABC NBC NBC Fox HBO NBC CBS NBC NBC ABC -
TV Shows to Watch That Shonda Rhimes Wrote
With “Grey’s Anatomy,” Shonda Rhimes became the first African-American woman to both create and executive produce a top-10 network TV series. Don’t worry, though. Shonda’s awesomeness might be one in a million, but because this overachiever is also a prolific writer, she’s happy to share some of it with you.‘Grey’s Anatomy’ (2005 – )
Like a lot of the best entertainment, “Grey’s Anatomy” came from a very real place. After a bit of success as a screenwriter for movies like “Crossroads,” post-9/11 reflections, ponderings on motherhood, and a fascination with watching surgeries on TV led Shonda Rhimes to write her first pilot. And so the world was gifted the distinct medical drama cocktail that is “Grey’s,” a one-of-kind mix of ethnically and socially diverse casting, sharp writing, eye candy, and characteristically shocking season finales.
Twelve seasons later, “Grey’s Anatomy” is still ticking. Any show that lives through three presidential terms earns its legendary status.
‘Private Practice’ (2007 – 2013)
You know what to expect when a spinoff hits: Whether it focuses on a breakout character or a different side of the show’s story, the mantra is usually “the same, but different.”
Shonda Rhimes didn’t settle for that when she created and contributed scripts to the “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff, “Private Practice.” Sure, Kate Walsh‘s Dr. Addison Forbes bridges the “Grey’s” gap as she moves from a hospital full of gorgeous people in Seattle to a hospital full of gorgeous people in L.A., but the straight-faced melodrama of “Practice” is worlds apart from the smirking banter of the Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Critics and fans had a mixed response to “Private Practice,” which dug deep into topics like social engineering and shades-of-gray morality. But one thing’s for sure — when Shonda took a swing at the spinoff, she swung hard.
‘Scandal’ (2012 – )
No cute titles, here — “Scandal” wears its twisting, turning, bitingly political heart on its sleeve. Not only did creator and sometimes writer Rhimes find her perfect muse in powerful star Kerry Washington, the politicizing is explosively mixed with presidential love affairs, espionage, and insanely magnetic cast chemistry. It’s the kind of show that inspires everything from social media tsunamis to its own fashion line — that’s precisely how “Scandal” jells with the pulse of the nation.
So Shonda is three series deep as a writer, but she’s apparently not into vacations. While her shows rack up Emmys, she racks up GLAAD Media and NAACP Image awards, which she probably puts on her desk right alongside scripts for the stacks of shows she produces, like “How to Get Away with Murder,” “The Catch,” and “Still Star-Crossed.”
Sounds like she’s following Dr. Cristina Yang’s advice from Season 4 of “Grey’s”: “Have some fire. Be unstoppable. Be a force of nature.” For Shonda Rhimes, that’s check, check, and check.

‘Scandal’ Pushed to Midseason to Accommodate Kerry Washington’s Pregnancy
As actress Kerry Washington prepares for the birth of her second child, ABC has decided to push back the premiere date of season six of “Scandal” to accommodate the star’s pregnancy.
The network revealed its revised 2016-2017 schedule during its annual upfront presentation in New York City this week, and it’s officially breaking up its Shondaland-only Thursday night block. Freshman series “Notorious” will take over “Scandal”‘s 9 p.m. TGIT timeslot in the fall, with “Scandal” set to return for an abbreviated 16-episode run sometime during the midseason.
That move probably means that Olivia Pope, Washington’s onscreen alter ego, will not be pregnant on the series, a potential plot point that was up in the air before ABC’s announcement. An Olivia pregnancy seemed like a longshot anyway, considering the character famously had an abortion earlier in season five, though it seemed that ABC did not yet have a plan for how to address Washington’s baby bump when her pregnancy was made public earlier this month.
Washington and her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, welcomed their first child, daughter Isabelle, back in April 2014. That pregnancy, which occurred during “Scandal”‘s third season, was also not written into the show, and necessitated some similar schedule shuffling.
Season five of “Scandal” wrapped last week. Season six is tentatively expected to debut sometime in January 2017.

Kerry Washington Pregnant With Second Child, ‘Scandal’ Season 6 May Be Delayed
Kerry Washington is reportedly pregnant, expecting her second child with husband Nnamdi Asomugha. The news was first shared by E!, which cited two sources confirming the actress’s pregnancy. Us Weekly also said that it had confirmed the news, though there’s been no official word yet from either Washington actress or her reps regarding the story.
Washington, 39, and Nnamdi, 35, are already parents to daughter Isabelle, who was born in April of 2014. The pair got hitched in a secret ceremony in Idaho in June 2013.
It’s unclear right now how Washington’s ABC series, “Scandal,” will accommodate the star’s pregnancy. According to TVLine, the network is mulling holding the show’s upcoming sixth season until the 2017 midseason, though no firm decision has been made so far. (ABC’s 2016-2017 schedule is due to debut in two weeks, per TVLine’s report.)
Washington’s first pregnancy, which occurred during production of “Scandal”‘s third season, was not written into the series; instead, ABC cut the show’s episode order and decreased Washington’s screen time. It’s unlikely that “Scandal” will work Washington’s pregnancy into the script this time around, either, especially following Olivia Pope’s decision to have an abortion earlier this season. But we won’t know how Washington’s news will affect her onscreen alter ego until either ABC or Shondaland makes an announcement.
Either way, we wish Washington and Nnamdi well as they prepare for baby number two. Congrats to the growing family!

Kerry Washington Talks ‘Scandal’: Olivia Pope Should Be ‘Nobody’s Role Model’

As die-hard fans of “Scandal” know, there’s not much that Kerry Washington can or will say about the upcoming, always-jaw-dropping twists and turns that the show’s become beloved for -– and she admits that usually even she doesn’t what’s about to be thrown at her. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a lot to talk about when it comes to Olivia Pope and the perilous world she inhabits created by Shonda Rhimes. As the show prepares to launch its fourth season, there’s one conclusion about her character that she’s come to, no matter how emotionally invested she or the show’s admirers are in Olivia. “I’ve always thought it was really misguided when women tell me that Olivia Pope is their role model,” says Washington, “because she’s having an affair with a married man who is the President of the United States. And a murderer. And they stole an election together -– well, she stole it for him.”
But her weakness for Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), who she grows even closer to as the new season launches, doesn’t mean there aren’t qualities the actress believes are worth praise. “There are things about her that are very admirable,” Washington says. “She is an entrepreneur; she is very smart; she has an amazing closet. And those are all things that I think are worthy of admiration -– but she is nobody’s role model… All of these characters are complicated characters. There are no good guys and bad guys in ShondaLand. You have three‑dimensional, messy human beings.”
Washington recently gathered with a small group of reporters to expound -– as much as she could -– on Olivia’s latest path, as well as offer some behind the scenes insight on the show and a few choice tidbits about her upcoming role as the groundbreaking political fgure Anita Hill in the upcoming HBO telepic “Confirmation.”
How much time do you spend thinking about Olivia Pope when you’re not on set? Does she dominate a certain portion of your brain?
Kerry Washington: Yeah, I think about her a lot. Mostly because the pace is so intense that when I’m not at work, I’m still trying to break down the episode and analyze the episode and arc out the episode and discover what the themes are for my character. Discover what this trajectory is. Figure out what’s the underbelly emotionally. So I’m processing a lot of the time. But I do. I mean, it’s important also that I turn it off. I spend time with my loved ones. I have other things that I do in my life.
Is a happy ending possible for Olivia and Fitz?
I don’t know. But I will say that when we came back, Tony and I were really surprised by the episode when we came back -– so it wasn’t what we expected.
Has it been a challenging season for you to start, as far as getting that meaty, unexpected stuff to play?
Yeah, I mean, we’re only in Episode Two [laughs], but yeah. It’s already been a bit of a ride.
Two episodes on a Shondaland show is like half a season on another show.
It’s very true!
How does affect you guys in the cast, the speed of the plot and how fast every card gets turned over?
I think it adds to what we were talking about in terms of pace and just really taking care of yourself and taking care of yourself physically and also creatively so you really stay on your Ps & Qs and you’re bringing all of what you have as an artist to the table and not giving in to fatigue.
Is that hard after a hiatus?
For me, I worked most of the hiatus. I was filming “Confirmation” for HBO, which I also produced. Because I was a producer, and then acting, I was pretty busy. so I didn’t really come out of gear too much. I just had to switch identity.
How was it doing that story?
It was great. The film is not as much the Anita Hill story. It’s about the hearings and about all the players. But it’s a story that’s really close to me and important to me. And we had a great time. The cast is spectacular.
Have you met Ms. Hill?
I have met her, yeah.
What was that experience like?
Pretty tremendous. She’s a pretty tremendous person.
What was the most interesting discovery about that particular role?
Well, being a part of it from the very beginning as a producer — and [“Erin Brockovich” screenwriter] Susannah Grant is our screenwriter and also a producer – so being part of the development from beginning to end was really interesting, because it was like “What story are we telling? How do we kind of bring life to all of these people?”
That’s why I say it’s not really “The Anita Hill Story.” It’s about all the players. It’s a peek behind the curtain into a time in history that we all remember, many of us. And some of us our younger people don’t know, exactly. But it’s a real peek behind the curtain to see what was going on – what was really at stake and what was really going on.
With the election ahead, you’ve been part of the Obama administration–
I have. I still am.
Will you continue to work with the new election coming up?
Yeah, I will. I always have my whole life. I mean, I campaigned for John Kerry. That was the year that “Ray” came out. So I’ve always been a very involved person politically and socially. And I have every intention to continue doing that.
With all that’s on your plate, what do you do with your hours that you spend each day in hair and makeup?
A lot of times I run lines, because our show is very language-intensive. So a lot of times, I run lines – not for that day, but maybe the next day because I always try to be at least a day ahead, or that day and the next day. Or I’m recording lines, because I work on my lines a lot by listening to them. So sometimes I’m recording my lines in the makeup chair. And then I try to make some phone calls and occasionally have a conversation.
Are you good at compartmentalizing?
I think so. I’m not as good as Olivia. She’s really good at compartmentalizing.
You’ve said that some days you’re just ready to pack it in and let the ensemble take over. What brings you back every day?
I’m not sure that I said that specifically. I said more that I try to quit acting all the time. Not necessarily the show. It’s not that I would ever want to walk away from “Scandal.” But sometimes I just think, “Eh, I think I’m done with this acting thing.”
What does bring you back to acting?
The story. Just being able to tell story that matters.
What do you love most about Olivia Pope’s style?
The Prada bags! We keep a closet for Olivia Pope because we try to reuse at least one item of clothing for every episode, so it feels like a real closet. So I don’t keep anything. And also, her style is really different from mine.
How so?
I play a lot more with fashion. She’s D.C. conservative, in a way. Even when I’m in Washington, I don’t wear suits the way she does. But I love her wardrobe. I think the other thing I love about it is that Lyn Paolo, our brilliant costume designer, she and I work very closely to make sure that it’s not just fashion for fashion’s stake, but that it’s telling a story. That the palette and the silhouettes are giving you clues about what’s going on for these characters.
How much do you know about what’s happening this season?
Nothing. All I know is what I’m working on.
Shonda never sits you down to prep you on what’s ahead?
Not a thing!
Do you prefer to play in the moment like that?
It was very hard for me in the first couple of seasons because I am a Type A student and I like to use all my post-its and my tabs. And I come from film, where I’m used to kind of the dramaturgical approach, of a beginning, middle, and an end. And I can only do that per episode. But now, with a little bit of time, I just learned to trust our writers and say, “You guys know what you’re doing.” And I’ll just take it one episode at a time.
Do you ever raise your hand and say, “You know, I’ve been playing Olivia a while. This note doesn’t seem quite right…” and work with them, or do you take it on faith?
I think our writers are really open to feedback. We have such a great deal of respect for every word that they write, and they also have a great deal of respect for our understanding of the characters. So we don’t really come to head. Oftentimes, we might say, “I don’t know about this.” And they say, “Well, let’s look at it.” And then, every once in a while, we’re right.
Has playing Olivia taught you something?
Yes, playing Olivia has taught me a lot. It’s taught the importance of a tailor. Tailoring is very important! I think the other thing, for me, is I’ve learned a lot from Olivia about courage. She’s somebody who…it’s not that she never gets scared, but when she’s afraid, she still moves forward. And I feel like that’s something that I really try to take home with me, that idea that there’s always another way. There’s always another solution. And you can seek a solution, even when you’re afraid.

Kerry Washington’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Fan Parents Embarrassed Her at Emmys
“Game of Thrones” fans, but at least they’re not Lannister siblings. Give them that much. The “Scandal” star was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night, and when the conversation turned to the Emmy Awards, Kerry shared a story about her GoT-loving mom and dad.A couple of years ago, she said, she took her parents to the Emmys and they embarrassed her at the HBO party. Kerry is a big “Game of Thrones” fan, but only because of her parents, who were into the show (and books) first. She acknowledged that that’s a little weird, considering some of the stuff on the show, and things got even weirder at the party when her mom met Khal Drogo, aka actor Jason Momoa.

Kerry’s parents have been married for over 40 years or so, she couldn’t remember, but when meeting Khal Drogo, “My mother turned into a 16-year-old girl. It was like ‘My son and stars!’ She just lost her stuff. She’s standing next to my father swooning over this man.” Jimmy noted that Jason Momoa is a good-looking guy (true) and he’s big. What did Kerry’s dad think while his wife was mooning over Drogo? “I think my dad’s crush is about the same,” Kerry said, “so he didn’t mind.” She mimicked his reaction with a grin and a thumbs-up sign. Jimmy said that would be a helluva threesome, and Kerry was just traumatized at the idea. “Jimmy, I can’t unring that bell.” Jimmy kept trying to get her to visualize the threesome, but she wouldn’t. “Well, your mother did.” Haha.Kerry and Jimmy also agreed that it was “selfish” of author George R.R. Martin to be at the Emmys this past Sunday instead of staying home to write the next book. Poor GRRM cannot catch a break.

Best of Late Night TV: Mean Tweets With Liam Neeson, The Rock; Hilarious ‘Empire’ Parody ‘Jimpire’
If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night. “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is doing the classic “Mean Tweets” segment differently this time. This whole week is Mean Tweets Week with celebrities stopping by to read mean tweets live on stage, a few at a time, as opposed to taping them in advance and airing them in one segment. (Ratings bait!) On Monday, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kristen Bell and Jeff Bridges read off tweets. Tuesday night, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Bette Midler, and Liam Neeson read off mean tweets. The Rock had a great response to his tweet and Bette’s wasn’t even that mean. Liam had a kinda cute little defeated walk-off after his mean tweet. Poor little Liam. Where’s that set of skills you’re supposed to have, man? Break out the phone and growl!
Over on “The Tonight Show,” Jimmy Fallon did a brilliant and ambitious — 10 minute! — “Empire” parody called “Jimpire,” featuring several great cameos … and then Donald Trump. It’s awesome, but as one commenter pointed out, Justin Timberlake should really be the next heir to “The Tonight Show.” Lock him in now.
Donald Trump stopped by “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and played a little quote game of “Trump Or Colbert,” with The Donald deciding who said it, himself or Stephen’s over-the-top conservative character on “The Colbert Report.” You may have noticed that Trump never apologizes for anything and he said he has nothing to apologize for. Stephen, however, apologized for some of the things he’s said about Trump.
Lea Michele was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” — in a very revealing dress — and discussed her character’s neck brace in “Scream Queens.”
Speaking of “Scream Queens,” queen Chanel No. 1 herself, Emma Roberts, was on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” and talked about having to kiss her old Nickelodeon buddy Nat Wolff. It was in North Carolina and they were all sweaty and she wiped off his sweat because she can’t handle sweat stache.
The amazing Patrick Stewart was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and dressed very casually for the occasion. He may as well have just shown up in his jammies. He talked about this late night wardrobe malfunction, the fact that he was once fired from his small-town paper, and the story of Ronald Reagan visiting the set of “Star Trek: the Next Generation.” Apparently, when you’re POTUS, you can just sit in the captain’s chair without asking.
“Scandal” beauty Kerry Washington talked to Jimmy Kimmel about the Emmys (including her dress), and how her parents embarrassed her at the Emmys a couple of years ago.
Anne Hathaway was on “The Tonight Show” and admitted she was scared of Robert De Niro on the set of “The Intern.” She said it was nothing he was doing, it was just her projecting so much onto him beause he’s the best.

First Look at Kerry Washington as Anita Hill in HBO’s ‘Confirmation’
Looks like Kerry Washington’s Anita Hill could use a little help from Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope.On “Scandal,” Washington plays a master fixer who can elect senators, clear innocent prisoners’ names, and bring a president to his knees (literally). If only Anita Hill could call on her in the upcoming HBO movie “Confirmation.”
HBO released the first image of Washington as the lawyer who testified in 1991 that she had been sexually harassed by then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. The movie follows the confirmation hearings that took place before Thomas ascended to his seat on the highest court in the land.
Wendell Pierce (“The Wire”) plays Thomas, and he and Washington are joined by a star-studded cast including Greg Kinnear as Joe Biden, Jennifer Hudson as witness Angela Wright, and Jeffrey Wright as Harvard Law professor Charles Ogletree. HBO has yet to set an airdate for “Confirmation.”
