‘The Residence’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Arriving on Netflix on March 20th, ‘The Residence’ sees prolific TV power producer Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland company looking to give the streaming service its own take on ‘Only Murders in the Building.’

But is there room for more than a couple of shows that blend murder mystery and comedy? That’s the case to unpack here.

Is ‘The Residence’ a Compelling Mystery?

With its unusual central sleuth, a lot of frustrated potential suspects and a (mostly) one-location setting, this new series still manages to avoid coming across like a bad copy of the ‘Only Murders’ format.

Here, creator/showrunner Paul William Davies (no stranger to White House affairs after working on Rhimes-birthed crisis management thriller series ‘Scandal’) mixes a crafty, funny mix of his own personal favorite mystery writers (the episode titles all nod to classic mystery books or movies) with the intriguing inner workings of the most famous address in America, since he also drew from Kate Andersen Brower’s book ‘The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House.’

It’s a combo that works really well –– the scurrilous world of behind-the-scenes drama during a State dinner for Australia is a fantastic backdrop for a teasing conundrum.

    Script and Direction

The key to any good mystery –– whether it’s supposed to be funny or not –– is a carefully constructed script with enough red herrings to throw you off the scent of the final truth at the heart of the matter.

Here, Williams and his writing staff concocted the twisted story of White House chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito), who rules efficiently and smoothly, but can’t abide personal drama. When he shows up dead on an upper floor of the residence at the White House, some within the building want it written off as a suicide, while others are convinced it was murder.

Naturally, that calls for a detective to be brought in, and ‘The Residence’s creative team have made one for the ages in Uzo Aduba’s Cordelia Cupp, a dedicated ornithologist who just so happens to have a genius brain for ferretting out the answers to mysteries.

(L to R) Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, Jason Lee as Tripp Morgan, Molly Griggs as Lilly Schumacher in 'The Residence'. Photo: Jessica Brooks/Netflix © 2024.
(L to R) Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, Jason Lee as Tripp Morgan, Molly Griggs as Lilly Schumacher in ‘The Residence’. Photo: Jessica Brooks/Netflix © 2024.

But it’s not just the Cordelia Cupp show, the scripts weave and wander around the residence, replaying moments in time from different angles and creating a solid group of characters to tell the story. And while a lot of the series takes place within the title location, there is also a hearing happening to break things up.

Directorially, Liza Johnson and her team bring an interesting style to the show, which sweeps through a version of the White House, and perfectly complements the story.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, Randall Park as Edwin Park in 'The Residence'. Photo: Erin Simkin/Netflix © 2024.
(L to R) Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, Randall Park as Edwin Park in ‘The Residence’. Photo: Erin Simkin/Netflix © 2024.

Uzo Aduba is delightful as Cordelia Cupp, a consulting detective in the Sherlock Holmes mold, who is brought in by befuddled authorities to crack the case.

Aduba is a natural at this sort of quirky comedy, and the character she brings to life is effortlessly entertaining, whether she’s interrogating suspects, confounding those who perceive themselves superior to her or tracking down a rare bird she wants to cross off her spotting list.

Her mismatched buddy comedy chemistry with Randall Park’s FBI agent Edwin Park is one of the best elements of the series –– they’re on the same mission, but they rarely agree on how to go about it, and Park’s deadpan energy syncs well with Aduba’s.

Giancarlo Esposito faced his own challenge coming into the show, as he inherited the role of chief usher Wynter from Andre Braugher. While Braugher had briefly played the part before the 2023 WGA strike shut down production, he died before filming could resume, leading to Esposito (who, coincidentally, replaced him years ago on ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ before they co-starred in the follow-up TV movie to the show) stepping in.

Giancarlo Esposito as A.B. Wynter in ‘The Residence’. Photo: Jessica Brooks/Netflix © 2024.

Wynter might seem like a character Esposito has become very known for playing –– icy, analytical and quietly arrogant, but he proves to be a refreshing change from that mode, with some more layers (even if his death kicks off the central mystery).

Of the considerable supporting cast, highlights include Al Franken, playing the senator leading the hearing into the investigation, the ever-reliable Eliza Coupe who steals scenes as Senator Bix, who is eager to get to the truth of the matter, and Mel Rodriguez, playing Bruce Geller, the chief engineer who had no great love for Wynter, but does fall for another member of the household staff.

Jason Lee is good value as Tripp Morgan, the President’s scruffy, lazy, salt-obsessed and light-fingered brother, bringing just the right level of sibling rivalry to the show, while Jane Curtin makes a meal of the role as the President’s mother-in-law who loves a drink, but hates noise.

Oh, and kudos to pop legend Kylie Minogue for being so game to make fun of herself in a couple of episodes.

    Final Thoughts

With its quirky score and offbeat central figure, you could effectively call this ‘Only Murders in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building’ (yes, yes, we know… the residence is part of the White House proper, just go with it.)

This latest Shondaland offering has a solid cast, a great mystery and a watchable story that keeps you guessing.

What’s the plot of ‘The Residence’?

Set in “upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs” of the White House, Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba), an eccentric detective, arrives on the premises in order to solve a murder which happened during a state dinner. During the investigation, interpersonal conflicts between 157 personnel of the residence start to unfold.

'Candy Cane Lane' starring Eddie Murphy premieres on Prime Video on December 1st.
‘Candy Cane Lane’ starring Eddie Murphy premieres on Prime Video on December 1st.

Premiering on Prime Video December 1st, ‘Candy Cane Lane’ sees Eddie Murphy leading a Christmas story with a magical twist. This fitfully funny comedy represents the company’s attempt to keep tapping the festive family movie market, something that competitors such as Netflix and Disney+ are also targeting.

Yet there’s a certain something missing here, and it isn’t Christmas spirit. It’s Eddie Murphy’s subversive brand of comedy.

Does ‘Candy Cane Lane’ deliver the goods?

Jillian Bell as ‘Pepper,’ Eddie Murphy as ‘Chris Carver,’ and Madison Thomas as ‘Holly Carver’ star in 'Candy Cane Lane.'

There is, as mentioned, a lot of competition in Christmas movies these days for those who don’t want the saccharine romantic antics of Hallmark and Lifetime’s concoctions or dig through apps to find classics to watch.

Amazon Studios, which has a deal with Eddie Murphy to make at least three movies (long-awaited comedy sequel ‘Coming 2 America’ was the first), has well and truly hopped on that holly-festooned bandwagon with this new offering.

But while it’s looking to channel the likes of ‘Deck the Halls’, it never quite hits the right gear. Though certainly better than some of the turgid family-friendly output Murphy has been part of in the past, it’s still lacking some of that essential magic. And that’s because the leading man tones down his wackier side to mostly play a stalwart family man who gets wrapped up in comedic Christmas oddness.

‘Candy Cane Lane’: script and direction

Written by Kelly Younger, a veteran of Disney and Pixar animated movies and live-action Muppet outings, ‘Candy Cane Lane’ takes some fairly obvious routes to its predictable conclusion. There are some well-used themes such as learning that family is more important than shiny gifts or winning competitions.

Murphy’s character is written as a fairly straight-ahead guy, dealing with kids of different ages and facing a big new problem in that he’s been let go from his job.

Younger has a good time writing for Pepper, who is mischievous and odd when the moment calls for it, and the magical creatures who appear from the 12 Days of Christmas tree that forms the major McGuffin here do offer some entertainment value (the concept of six geese carpet bombing unsuspecting pedestrians with eggs from the sky is a good one, and plays well into the finale, for example.)

And there are, at least some fun diversions, including a group of characters who have previously fallen foul of Pepper.

It’s just whenever the story cuts back to family time, the feeling is of Christmas joy leeching from the movie, no matter how much the script or actors try to enliven them.

Director Reginald Hudlin, meanwhile –– working with Murphy for the first time since 1992’s ‘Boomerang’ –– largely leans on his cast effects team to do the work, finding and few solid shots here and there.

As mentioned, this is Eddie Murphy on all-audiences autopilot, bringing another staid parental man to life who sees his carefully curated world start to unravel. There are lessons to be learned, and chaotic elves to deal with, but Murphy largely treats it all like another day at the office.

Of course, he’s fun, but it’s not the sort of passion he displayed in the past, coming across more as a “one for them” performance. You might try to point to a legendary comedy creator slowing down as he ages, but he put more drive into the likes of recent movies such as ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ and ‘Coming 2 America’ than he does here.

If there is a comedy MVP of the movie, it’s Jillian Bell, who has the role of miscreant magic user Pepper, who after being banished from the North Pole, is convinced she has to punish mankind’s wicked ways, and does it through dodgy deals. Bell, who has been good in the likes of ‘Godmothered’, ‘Rough Night’ and ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ and runs with the character, breathing real life into Pepper.

Alongside her are the poor, unfortunate souls who have agreed to her deals in the past and are reduced to being living figurines in the village display in her Christmas shop, who all make small supporting roles work. That includes the likes of Nick Offerman, a proven comedy talent who is inexplicably lumbered with (or perhaps he chose to try) a cod-British accent. Still, he generates some good laughs.

Around Murphy is his family unit, played by Tracee Ellis Ross, Genneya Walton, Thaddeus J. Mixson and Madison Thomas, who are all perfectly fine in their roles but (aside from Thomas) are mostly there to be stock characters in a movie like this. Ross in particular did so much with a driven career woman in ‘Black-ish’ on TV but is saddled with a much less impressive part here.

    ‘Candy Cane Lane’: Final Thoughts

While its delights are of the strictly standard variety, ‘Candy Cane Lane’ ends up a suitably enjoyable Christmas movie if you’re not particularly demanding.

Boosted by Bell and her comedy support in particular, it’s watchable enough, and is seemingly made for the family to watch on the sofa with mugs of hot cocoa in hand.

What’s the story of ‘Candy Cane Lane’?

After Chris (Eddie Murphy) inadvertently makes a deal with a mischievous elf named Pepper (Jillian Bell) to better his chances of winning his neighborhood’s annual Christmas home decoration contest, she casts a magic spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life and wreaks havoc on the whole town.

At the risk of ruining the holidays for his family, Chris, his wife Carol (Tracee Ellis Ross), and their three children must race against the clock to break Pepper’s spell, battle deviously magical characters, and save Christmas for everyone.

Premiering on Prime Video beginning December 1st is the new Christmas movie ‘Candy Cane Lane,’ which stars Eddie Murphy (‘Trading Places,’ ‘Beverly Hills Cop’) and was directed by Reginald Hudlin (‘Boomerang’).

'Candy Cane Lane' director Reginald Hudlin.
‘Candy Cane Lane’ director Reginald Hudlin.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Reginald Hudlin about his work on ‘Candy Cane Lane,’ his first reaction to the screenplay, reuniting with Eddie Murphy and if his process has changed at all since ‘Boomerang,’ the challenges of mixing live-action with VFX and animation, making a Christmas movie and if he is ready for the film to become a holiday must-watch.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Hudlin, screenwriter Kelly Younger, and Production Designer Aaron Osborne.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction to Kelly Younger’s screenplay, and can you also talk about the challenges of making a Christmas movie?

Reginald Hudlin: When I first read Kelly Younger’s script, I loved it. My only real note was, as crazy as this is, we don’t go far enough. So, I said, “Let’s make it even crazier.” We had a great time. Whenever you make a Christmas movie, there’s certain expectations, right? So, you’ve got to have great Christmas music, you’ve got to have an emotional impact on people, and you’ve got to have amazing decorations. So, I doubled down, if not tripled down on all that stuff. Then we added elements that you would never normally see in a Christmas movie to make people go, “Whoa, I’ve never seen anything like this before.” So, have your cake and eat it too.

MF: What was it like reuniting with Eddie Murphy, what does he bring to a role like this, and has his process as an actor changed at all since you worked with him on ‘Boomerang’?

RH: Eddie was perfect for this because he’s a family man. He’s like the rest of us. He’s decorating the house and making sure that all the family have great presence. So, we were both very much in the same mindset of we love Christmas, we love Christmas movies, and here’s our contribution. So, we’re doing it from a point of view of, we relate to this character 100%, which is key to me when you make a movie like this. Eddie just keeps getting better, honestly. When you’re sitting in the editing room and you’re watching his performance, both comedically and dramatically, you just go, “Boy, he’s great at his job.” Eddie Murphy is an amazing actor. When people do comedy, they go, “Oh, that’s easy.” It would be the opposite of easy. It’s harder.

MF: Can you talk about your use of VFX in the movie and mixing live-action with computer animation?

RH: It was so much fun. I’ve been dying to work with ILM, Industrial Light & Magic, all those amazing folks. Man, they had so much fun. We were just feeding off each other like, “What about this? What about that?” We had these great vocal performances from these world-class actors, Nick Offerman, Robin Thede, Chris Redd, and then they took that stuff and then added the physical comedy on top of it. So, we were just like, “Oh my God.” We’re all having the best time.

MF: Finally, how do you feel about the idea of ‘Candy Cane Lane’ becoming a holiday tradition and a movie that audiences watch year after year?

RH: When we made the movie, we were like, “Look, let’s pack it with so many jokes, so many visual things going on that you’ve got to see it more than once just to catch all the stuff.” So, it’s all there for you. We start December 1st, but you can watch it all 25 days.

Outside of the ‘Shrek’ world’s TV specials, Eddie Murphy hasn’t exactly been known for his holiday output.

That’s all set to change this Christmas as he debuts new family comedy ‘Candy Cane Lane’ which finds the star fully embracing the warmth (and in this case, chaos) that is usually associated with thoughts of Santa, reindeer and elves.

  • ‘Party Down’ Season 3 Interviews: Jane Lynch and Ken Marino

    hd2J1bcQ

Premiering on Starz February 24th is the long-awaited third season of the popular comedy series ‘Party Down,’ which was created by Rob Thomas (‘Veronica Mars’), Paul Rudd (‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’), John Enbom, and Dan Etheridge.

    Is ‘Party Down’ coming back?

Yes! The series, which ran its first two seasons on Starz in 2009 and 2010 is returning for a six-episode revival series premiering on February 24th.

    What is ‘Party Down?’

‘Party Down’ is a half-hour comedy that follows a Los Angeles catering company that is comprised of aspiring actors and writers as they work small-time catering gigs hoping for their big breaks. Each episode finds the company’s employees working a new event, and getting into trouble with their rich and powerful guests.

In season 3, ten years after season 2, most of the catering team have moved on, including actor/bartender Henry Pollard (Adam Scott). After a surprise reunion, the gang find themselves once again stoically enduring the procession of random parties and oddball guests all over Los Angeles.

Who is in the cast of ‘Party Down’ season 3?

‘Party Down’ season 3 stars returning cast members Adam Scott (‘Severance’) as Henry Pollard, Ken Marino (‘Masterminds’) as Ronald Wayne “Ron” Donald, Jane Lynch (‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’) as Constance Carmell, Martin Starr (‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’) as Roman DeBeers, Ryan Hansen (‘Bad Santa 2’) as Kyle Bradway, and Megan Mullally (‘The Disaster Artist‘) as Lydia Dunfree, as well as new cast members Tyrel Jackson Williams (‘Thunder Force’) and Zoë Chao (‘The Afterparty’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jane Lynch and Ken Marino about working on the third season of ‘Party Down,’ where their characters are now, and reuniting with the rest of the cast.

Ken Marino and Jane Lynch star in season 3 of Starz's 'Party Down.'
(L to R) Ken Marino and Jane Lynch star in season 3 of Starz’s ‘Party Down.’

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Lynch, Marino, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr, Tyrel Jackson Williams, Zoe Chao, and series co-creator John Enborn.

Moviefone: To begin with, Jane, what has Constance been up to in the decade or so since season two?

Jane Lynch: Well, when we last left Constance, she had just gotten married to a very rich old man in an episode directed by Ken Marino. He died immediately, not Ken, the guy playing my husband. Who actually, the actor did die shortly thereafter. Bless his heart. So I inherited all of his money. You saw me in fact, in the last shot (of season 2) when they say, “Your husband’s dead,” and all of a sudden it hits me, he may be dead, but I’ve got all this money. So anyway, that’s what happened with my character. So when I come back, I’m loaded and happy, always happy, and glad to see my friends again.

MF: Ken, what has Ron been doing since we last saw him?

Ken Marino: Ron is just still trying to live the dream and fight through what life hands him, which is a lot of crap. He keeps going, and he pushes through. He’s close to realizing his dream, but as you know, there are a lot of obstacles that he creates for himself, and get in the way. We’ll see what happens.

MF: What was it like your first day back on set with the entire cast after such a long time?

JL: Well, that’s what it felt like too. I was thinking, God, am I going to be able to get back into the character? Then I get with all these guys and immediately back in.

KM: Yeah, it’s a special show. And to get to work with everybody again is a wonderful gift that I didn’t expect was going to happen. So when it actually did happen, I was thrilled.

MF: Jane, did you rewatch your work in the first two seasons to kind of remind you of who Constance was and how to play her now?

JL: You know what? I think I did. Usually, I’m a very lazy actor. I mean, if I learn my lines, we’re lucky. But I think I actually did go back and look. I can’t remember exactly doing it, but the only thing I was nervous about was would it come back? Was it really in there? And it was because I was around everybody else who was doing their thing. I think it was a relief for all of us.

MF: Finally, Ken, what did you do to get back into the role of Ron?

KM: Ron’s deep in there and I don’t think he ever left. So I think I’ve been holding him in there in hopes that we would get to do another season. And lo and behold, here we are.

    Eight Great Summer Vacation Movies

    Meatballs

    16072
Sometimes overlooked in favor of other “slobs vs. snobs” comedy classics from the same era, like Animal House and Caddyshack, this was Bill Murray’s first starring role, and the feature directorial debut for Ivan Reitman. Murray stars as Tripper, head counselor at Camp North Star, a bargain-basement summer camp in Ontario. Murray takes the lonely Rudy (Chris Makepeace) under his wing while still overseeing a group of oddball counselors-in-training as they have their own romances, pull pranks on the camp’s director, and take on wealthy Camp Mohawk in a yearly tournament. It’s ultimately a sweet story, without ever getting quite as crass as some of the era’s other films starring Saturday Night Live alumni. ‘Meatballs’ would turn out to be hugely successful, spawning three mostly unrelated sequels and countless knockoffs.

    Wet Hot American Summer

    9824
If ‘Meatballs’ saw plenty of lesser imitations, ‘The State’ alumni David Wain and Michael Showalter stepped up with a satirical take on summer camp movies. Although it bombed at the box office, it’s since become a cult classic, spawning two series on Netflix (one prequel and one sequel). There’s an amazing cast here, including Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Amy Poehler, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, Christopher Meloni, and David Hyde Pierce, plus other alumni from ‘The State,’ such as Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, and Joe Lo Truglio. There’s a plot here about the camp putting on a talent show, counselors in love, and a falling piece of Skylab that threatens everyone’s lives, but it’s really just an excuse to see some stars and future stars show off some great comic chops.

    Dirty Dancing

    4518
For those that haven’t gotten around to seeing this classic, it’s easy to write off ‘Dirty Dancing’ as sappy romance. But that would be wrong. It’s an emotionally satisfying coming-of-age story about Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) and her steamy summer romance with dancer Johnny (Patrick Swayze). The dancing is terrific, Grey and Swayze have terrific chemistry. Written by Eleanor Bergstein and based on her own summer trips to the Catskills, Baby’s adventure starts because she and her family are taking a summer vacation at Kellerman’s a tony resort. Baby sees hints of classism between some of the staff, and she finds herself drawn more to the working class staffers instead of the Ivy League-bound waiters. The film subversively gives Baby agency, letting her pick her own friends and make her own choices in her sex life; she has a summer fling with a sexy dancer and isn’t punished by fate for it. That was fairly groundbreaking in 1987, and is (sadly) might still be considered unusual in some corners even now.

    National Lampoon’s Vacation

    887
This is another film that started a franchise, but the original version is still the best. Based on screenwriter John Hughes’ own National Lampoon story about a disastrous road trip, the movie focuses on the Griswold’s drive from Chicago to California for a visit to a thinly-veiled version of Disneyland called “Wally World.” Chevy Chase puts in a legendary turn as Clark, the increasingly obsessive patriarch of the Griswold clan. Clark is going to have a great road trip with his family whether they like it or not, and if he becomes Ahab in a station wagon, then so be it. Beverly D’Angelo hits just the right notes as Clark’s wife Ellen, as does Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barron as their children Rusty and Audrey. Chase and D’Angelo would return for sequels, and it became a running joke that Rusty and Audrey would be recast in every subsequent film. This first adventure sees car trouble in the desert, an unwanted passenger, a temptress in a Ferrari, and a visit with Cousin Eddy (a reminder of when Randy Quaid was funny). It’s filled with laughs, but it will definitely make you think twice about future family road trips.

    Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

    19138
Based on the best-selling YA novel by Ann Brashares, this is the story of four teen girls, best friends since childhood, who are about to spend their first summer apart. But before three of them leave town, the quartet go shopping and find a pair of jeans that magically fit each one of them. The four decide that they’ll share the pants for the summer, and while each of them have these mysterious jeans in their possession, their individual summers are upended. Blake Lively, America Ferrara, Alexis Bledel, and Amber Tamblyn play Bridget, Carmen, Lena, and Tibby (respectively). The movie captures the charm of the novel, in no small part because of the charisma and chemistry of the stars, and it’s ultimately a heartwarming tale about female friendships and the bonds young women make that can last a lifetime.

    Girls Trip

    20087028
The annual Essence Music Fest takes place in New Orleans every 4th of July, and that’s the backdrop for Ryan Pierce’s (Regina Hall) attempt to reunite with three of her friends from college. Pierce is a bestselling author and lifestyle guru, poised to be “the next Oprah.” She’s scheduled to speak at the festival, so she invites her college friends to join her, in the hopes of rekindling their friendships. These other three have lives of their own now; Sasha (Queen Latifah) is a celebrity gossip blogger, Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith) is a working single mother, and Dina (Tiffany Haddish) is still party-girl Dina, all these years later. These four actors are great together, but Tiffany Haddish is a revelation here, stealing the movie and never giving it back. The film isn’t afraid to remind us that women can and do party hard, but it doesn’t lose sight of these friends repairing burned bridges and reaffirming their love for each other.

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar

    Uya6FAeGPtVqkWKvSILvg4
One of the casualties of quarantine is that this film didn’t get a proper theatrical release. That’s a shame, because as funny as this movie is, it would have been even more side-splitting with a big audience. Make no mistake, this movie is straight up bananas from beginning to end. Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo wrote the script and star as Star and Barb, two middle-aged best friends that talk a bit too much, they can be both clueless and timid, but once they hit Vista Del Mar, the movie all but explodes into mayhem. To describe too much would be to take away some of the stunningly insane jokes packed wall-to-wall across the entire film. But suffice to say you may never look at Jamie Dornan the same way again.

    The Endless Summer

    30550
This is one of the first and probably still the best surf movie ever made. Director Bruce Brown follows two surfers, Robert August and Mike Hynson, as they leave Southern California and travel to surf spots around the world, including South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Tahiti, Senegal, New Zealand, Hawaii, and Australia. Brown’s breezy narration is a far cry from the stiffer voices heard in most documentaries at the time, and it lends an inviting tone to the gorgeous cinematography of the both surf action and the local landscapes. This documentary might help non-surfers understand the appeal of surfing more than any other film ever made, and the idea of an “endless summer” means its welcome on any day of the calendar year.
