Moviefone recently had the pleasure of traveling to ARCH Motorcycle’s headquarters in Los Angeles to sit down and speak with Keanu Reeves and Gard Hollinger about their work on ‘Visionaries’. Reeves and Hollinger discussed the new series, their experience making it, how they chose the people they talked to and what they learned from them, how the experience changed their friendship, and the future of their motorcycle company.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews.

Moviefone: To begin with, Gard, can you talk about creating this series and how it applies to the work you are doing here at ARCH?

Gard Hollinger: We both are curious. We both like stories and storytelling. I think we’ve sort of done that with ARCH in a way, and we had this opportunity to make a TV show. The production company we worked with, V10 and Roku supporting it, were very gracious in allowing us to share our ideas. They said yes to it, and we went on this journey.

MF: How did you choose the people that you wanted to interview?

GH: Well, first, we thought that they needed to somehow be helping shape and change the world. We clearly wanted their story to have heart. We wanted to be inspired by them and help share their story to inspire the viewer. I think all the visionaries share this ability to overcome obstruction, and we deal with that all the time. So, it’s just sort of changing how you think instead of looking at something as an obstruction, is it an opportunity and how is it an opportunity? Certainly, being inspired by their creativity to make something from nothing, including James Turrell and a crater or Paige Bradley and a sculpture. Yeah, it was an amazing experience.

MF: Keanu, what did you learn from the people you interviewed and how has that informed your work at ARCH?

Keanu Reeves: I would say perhaps broadening the horizon, making more that perhaps if we feel isn’t possible, maybe it can be possible.

MF: Keanu, in the episode where you visited artist James Turrell’s volcanic installation, it seemed like you were really moved emotionally. What was that experience like for you personally?

KR: It was extraordinary. The situation of what he had created and put us in positions to appreciate the celestial, I found very moving.

MF: In one episode, Gard crashes the only prototype ARCH motorcycle. Keanu, as a company, how do you overcome that type of obstacle?

KR: I would say doing the forensics on the crash helped evaluate the limits of the motorcycle. Also, through the storytelling, you wouldn’t have been in that position to crash if there wasn’t something about the potential of the motorcycle. You were testing the limit. It was a true test ride. I think through that crash, we saw the limits of the motorcycle, knew what perhaps suspension, ergonomically, obviously, the context of the crash, weather, temperature, track temperature, speeds that you’re going, and personal limits. But all of that, I think, worked toward a better motorcycle.

MF: When you visited Relativity Space, engineer Tim Ellis was talking about how expensive it is to make a rocket that you are not even sure will work or not, and Keanu, you then compared it to making movies. Can you talk about what you mean by that?

KR: I meant in a practical investment aspect, you go put all this personal energy, time of many people, financial elements, and investment, and you don’t know if it’s going to work. You’re going to release a film and it’s either going to go to the moon or go drop. But anyway, it was about that, the risk of it. A leap of faith.

MF: Gard, was making this series “a leap of faith” as well?

GH: That I suppose, yeah. Anything creative is a leap of faith. This series, we hope people like it, and then that allows us to maybe meet some more visionaries.

MF: What did you learn about yourself from making this series?

GH: Oh, man, what did I learn about myself? That, I guess, I have other interests besides motorcycles.

MF: Keanu, did you learn anything from this experience?

KR: What did I learn? I don’t know if I learned it, but I felt it like, “Gosh, I got to do more.” Just more. Create more storytelling. I got to get over what’s obstructing and I got to do more. There’s more we can do.

MF: Finally, Keanu, has this series brought you and Gard closer together, and what has it been like sharing this experience with him?

KR: I don’t know if that was part of what happened in this experience or creating this piece. I think probably the strength of it was our bond and what we’ve done together in the past and bringing it to this project.

What is the plot of ‘Visionaries’?

Keanu Reeves and Gard Hollinger are kindred souls with a bond built on a love of motorcycles and an insatiable curiosity about the world around them. In 2011, they founded ARCH Motorcycle to reimagine what a motorcycle could be. To them, ARCH is a mindset, a lens through which to see the world. This is a journey of curiosity, to understand where human creativity comes from and to shine a light on the visionaries who are pushing the bounds of innovation and changing our world.

  • Movie Review: ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’

Opening in theaters on December 20th, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ marks the third outing for the popular movie franchise spawned by the video game character best known for super speed and collecting rings.

The former is on full display in this new film, which reunites much of the major players from the previous movies, while the idea of the portal rings largely takes a backseat (aside from a couple of key moments).

And this movie offers largely more of the same, albeit with a little more entertainment value from the occasionally stalled second entry.

The ‘Sonic’ movies by this point are certainly a known quantity. You have Ben Schwartz providing chatty energy as the lead character. Solid support from the likes of Idris Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as fellow video game-birthed characters Knuckles and Tails respectively (since this is a franchise that employs the strategy of hoovering up characters from previous installments and turning rivals into family). Lots of silly gags. Jim Carrey snacking on the scenery in pure pantomime fashion.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ doesn’t break any of these rules, but it does deploy them effectively, while wrapping in much of the love-can-triumph-over-vengeance themes and making good choices concepts that parents might hope for (even if we’ve seen them many, many times before).

    Script and Direction

(L to R) Director Jeff Fowler and Jim Carrey on the set of ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega.

The script from returning writing veterans Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington is also hewn from familiar rock. We’re re-introduced to Sonic and friends attempting to get in some downtime at a campsite (while also celebrating the anniversary of the spiky hero’s arrival on Earth), only for a powerful new threat (Keanu Reeves’ Shadow the Hedgehog) to put those plans on hold.

It’s full of what you expect from a ‘Sonic’ movie but put together with enough style and fun to make it worthwhile. The dynamics between the various characters are established and there are enough surprising new elements (more on that when we get to the “performances” section) to keep things moving at a decent clip.

While there are some expected, slightly mawkish emotional moments along the way, there’s also some welcome undercutting of such easily exploited tropes. The story is never really the most important element –– expect the usual world-threatening McGuffin and a new antagonist with emotional issues.

As director, Jeff Fowler is also well versed in bringing the ‘Sonic’ universe to life, and he’s still on the top of his game here. The human characters (aside from Carrey’s) are mostly shoved to the sidelines (though James Marsden and Tika Sumpter do get a few decent moments) and the focus is on our titular hero.

The effects are still up to a decent, slightly cartoony standard (the days of “ugly sonic” are long behind us) and the action moves along at a solid clip.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey, James Marsden as Tom and Tika Sumpter as Maddie in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

The central combination of Schwartz’s winning motormouth delivery as Sonic and Carrey’s try-anything zaniness can eclipse all else, but there is a solid antagonist this time around.

    Ben Schwartz as Sonic

Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Schwartz has really leaned into the fun as Sonic, and even though he’s only ever in a recording booth for the role, his contribution is clear. You can imagine the sheer number of alternate line-readings for each moment, and the actor delivers both the laughs and the emotional moments effectively.

Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik/Gerald Robotnik

(L to R) Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
(L to R) Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

If you’ve seen the trailer, you know that the third ‘Sonic’ features double the Jim Carrey. Reports of Ivo Robotnik’s death at the end of the second movie are naturally exaggerated and he’s back. This time, Carrey not only gets to play a new side of the not-so-good Doctor, who we first meet here as a lazy slob binge-watching telenovelas.

But we’re also introduced to his grandfather Gerald, whose story is tied in with Shadow’s, and has some emotional resonance. The gusto with which he throws himself into the dual role is something to watch, and if this is what an actor does when they’re just picking up a paycheck (as he himself recently admitted, then other performers take note!

Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog

Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

The main casting coup this time is playing the man who was Neo as the new “villain”, though with the actor’s soulful turns, he’s more than that. Reeves commits to the role of the bitter, vengeful character and works well against Schwartz’s excited energy.

    Idris Elba as Knuckles

Knuckles (Idris Elba) in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
Knuckles (Idris Elba) in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

While Elba is typically low-key, he’s found a good gear as the echidna warrior, who is always ready for a fight, but is slowly coming to realize that being around Sonic and the rest is good for him.

    Supporting Cast

(L to R) Tika Sumpter plays Maddie and James Marsden plays Tom in 'Sonic The Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America; Inc.
(L to R) Tika Sumpter plays Maddie and James Marsden plays Tom in ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America; Inc.

As mentioned, human co-stars James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are certainly moved slightly to the side (though they both have roles to play in the finale). Colleen O’Shaughnessey is an effervescent Tails and there’s a welcome emotional growth even for the likes of Lee Majdoub’s Agent Stone, Robotnik’s loyal sidekick, who here sees some competition in the grandfather character.

    Final Thoughts

Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America; Inc.

While it certainly doesn’t re-invent the wheel when it comes to a ‘Sonic’ adventure, it has enough laughs to keep the family engaged.

And, of course, you’re encouraged to stay through the credits for the contractual tease of what might be to come in the future (yes, ‘Sonic 4’ was announced just before the release of this one.)

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

What’s the plot of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’?

Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow (Keanu Reeves), a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before.

With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.

While Lionsgate’s bosses seem convinced that more ‘John Wick’ theatrical releases will be on the way, it appears that the main duo involved in the movies so far –– star Keanu Reeves and director/producer Chad Stahelski –– are focusing their immediate efforts on the latest small-screen incarnation of the story.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate now has Stahelski and Reeves involved in a new series called ‘John Wick: The High Table’, which the company will produce.

The new series picks up directly after the end of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’.

John Wick has left the world of the High Table in a tenuous position and a collection of new characters will look to make a name for themselves while some of the franchise stalwart characters remain committed to the old-world order.

A description of the new series promises to “combine new and old and thrust the ‘Wick’ universe into a new age.”

While Reeves right now is only attached to produce, with no plans to appear (after all, his character dies… probably in ‘Chapter Four’), Stahelski is on board to direct the first episode.

And the filmmaker’s involvement will be part of his big overall deal with Lionsgate, sealed in January, to oversee all aspects of the expanding Wick storytelling scene. He’ll produce via his 87Eleven Entertainment company.

On the creative front for the new show, Robert Levine, one of the co-creators of FX series ‘The Old Man’ (which certainly shared themes with ‘Wick’, is writing and running it.

The new show is just the latest way that Lionsgate is looking to utilize the sprawling ‘Wick’-verse, and the next version to actually appear will be ‘Ballerina’, due on June 6th next, year. The movie, set between the events of the third and fourth movie, stars Ana de Armas as a young assassin out for revenge and has Len Wiseman directing.

There is also a movie spin-off focused on Donnie Yen’s character from ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ in the works.

When will the new ‘John Wick’ show be on screens?

Though Lionsgate is producing the show, it is currently being shopped to networks. Peacock, of course, picked up the previous spin-off, prequel series ‘The Continental’, but the new show is up for grabs. So expect plenty of interest from the likes of Netflix and more.

When you have an internationally known and respected action star in the latest entry of your popular franchise, it stands to reason that, should his character pop, you might end up going the spin-off route.

Such is the case with martial arts icon Donnie Yen, who graced ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ last year as Caine, a highly skilled, blind assassin. Yen is now the focus of another ‘Wick’ spin-off.

Lionsgate has yet to confirm the specific storyline for the new movie, though we do know it’ll continue the arc established in ‘Chapter 4’, as Caine was freed from his obligations to the High Table, the organization that purports to control the activities of hitmen such as Keanu Reeves’ John Wick.

What we do know on the narrative front is that Robert Askins, a Tony-nominated playwright who has also worked on such series as ‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘The Son’, has been hired to write the script.

Here’s what Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson had to say about the new development:

“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an inedible mark and had fans asking for more. The ‘John Wick’ universe that Chad, Basil, Erica, and Keanu have built offers a tapestry of fascinating characters brought to life by the most extraordinary performers, and we’re excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars on board to continue this journey.”

And here’s what Yen himself said:

“The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil, and Erica push themselves to create action, fights, and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story, and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”

No other casting was confirmed by the studio, though given that Reeves is reprising his role as Wick (albeit more as a cameo) in one of the other movie spin-offs, ‘Ballerina’ (due in theaters on June 6th, 2025), there’s still a possibility he could pop up in Yen’s film.

And this marks just the latest expansion of the ‘John Wick’ universe launched by the 2014 original movie –– in addition to ‘Ballerina’, we’ve already had TV prequel ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’, which streamed on Peacock and charted the earlier days of the titular hotel.

While Paramount touted the success of its ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ franchise at its big CinemaCon presentation last week (and showed a footage snippet of the upcoming third entry –– more on that below), the studio stopped short of announcing who would be voicing Shadow the Hedgehog, a new character (at least in the movies) who will be causing trouble for our hero.

But now, thanks to The John Campea Show (and since confirmed by the trades), the news has leaked that no less an actor than Keanu Reeves will be providing the voice for shadow. With ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ wrapped for a while and post-production already under way, we assume he’s already started in the voice booth or will be reporting for duty shortly.

Nothing has been officially released about the story for the new ‘Sonic’ movie, though we can predict more speedy behavior from the main character and a fresh devious scheme from Robotnik, though the footage shown at CinemaCon shows Jim Carrey’s villain as out of shape and depressed, only to get his groove back when he creates Shadow, described as a dark twin for the titular hero.

How James Marsden’s Tom Wachowski figures in this time remains to be seen, and we’ll also see the return of Sonic’s fellow CG creations Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey). Ben Schwartz, of course, returns to voice Sonic.

Rumors have suggested a potential trip through time and the film’s social media account kicked off the start of shoot with a teaser for Shadow.

Shadow, created by Takashi Iizuka and Shiro Maekawa, first appeared in 2001’s ‘Sonic Adventure 2’.

In the games’ canon, he was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of the series’ antagonist Doctor Robotnik. After witnessing the death of his best friend Maria Robotnik, Shadow initially seeks revenge, but later vows to keep his promise to her that he would protect the world from danger. An antihero, Shadow has good intentions but will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, putting him at odds with Sonic.

From the sounds of it, the movie is tweaking his origin story to bring in more of the movie’s narrative, but we’ll see how it all shakes out.

Jeff Fowler is once again directing the third movie, having handled the first two, with the script from regular writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

Neal H. Moritz is producing this one, as he has the others.

The ‘Sonic’ universe has so far spawned the three movies and the upcoming TV spin-off featuring the Knuckles character, which kicks off on April 26th.

When will ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ be in theaters?

  • Drew Goddard Writing and Directing ‘The Matrix 5’

    • A fifth ‘Matrix’ movie is in the works.
    • Drew Goddard, who made ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is writing and directing.
    • There is no release date yet.

The Matrix’ is 25 years old this year, and if that makes a portion of our audience feel like they should be crumbling into dust, join the club: we’ve had dust jackets made. The three original movies (‘The Matrix’, ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’) are still considered landmark genre entries.

So it’s perhaps the perfect year to announce that a new ‘Matrix’ movie is in the works, which might yet come as a surprise given the lackluster box office of 2021’s ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ (not helped by its day-and-date release on streaming service Max).

For the first time, though, neither of the Wachowskis who crafted the original trilogy (with Lana Wachowski stepping back up to make ‘Resurrections alone) are writing or directing this one.

Instead, the new movie will be created by ‘The Martian’ writer and ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ filmmaker Drew Goddard, with Lana Wachowski on board to executive produce.

Right now, to no-one’s particular surprise, the storyline is being kept a secret. All that featured in the news release about the movie is Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman teasing that the story will advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a success.

Also unknown at this time? Who from the various movies’ casts (particularly veterans Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss) will return, if any.

Here’s Ehrman’s statement on the new development:

“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

    And Goddard also seems enthused:

“It is not hyperbole to say ‘The Matrix’ films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

Goddard, of course, also brought us ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ and wrote memorable genre entries including ‘Cloverfield’ and ‘World War Z’.

When will the new ‘Matrix’ movie be in theaters?

Warner Bros. hasn’t said yet when it might release the new movie. Of course, it might have been good to have it ready for this year’s 25th anniversary, but that’s not happening.

    • Cameron Diaz is in talks to join the movie ‘Outcome’.

    • Apple is backing the new movie.

Given that she seemed to be done with acting after completing work on 2014’s musical remake ‘Annie’, it’s reassuring to know that Cameron Diaz still seems to want to grace our screens.

She already has one project on the way –– Netflix action comedy ‘Back in Action’, which co-stars ‘Annie’s Jamie Foxx –– and has now entered talks to star with Keanu Reeves in a new dark comedy ‘Outcome’.

The new movie’s plot focuses Reef (Reeves), a damaged Hollywood star who must dive into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after he is extorted with a mysterious video clip.

Deadline’s story on Diaz joining the film offered no details on who she’s playing. Could she be someone from Reef’s life that he’s wronged in the past? Or a woman who knows him now and is shocked to discover exactly what he was up to back in the day?

‘Outcome’ represents the latest film to be directed by actor Jonah Hill (who may also show up in front of the cameras). He co-wrote the script with Ezra Woods.

Hill, best known for the comedy likes of ‘Superbad’ and the ‘21 Jump Street’ movies, has been making inroads into filmmaking. He first directed 2018 coming-of-age tale ‘Mid90s’ and followed that up with 2022’s ‘Stutz’, a documentary about his therapist.

In addition to that, he’s also moved into writing and producing, working on the likes of ‘You People’ (in which he also starred). And he’s been keeping his acting career going with movies such as ‘Don’t Look Up’ and ‘The Beach Bum’.

Apple Original Films has picked up the rights to finance and distribute the movie, but there’s no word yet on whether it’ll see the inside of theaters (as with ‘Napoleon’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’) or debut on Apple TV+ (joining the likes of ‘Fingernails’ and ‘The Beanie Bubble’.)

And it marks the latest collaboration between the company and Hill, who is executive producing a Grateful Dead movie that ‘Flower Moon’ filmmaker Martin Scorsese will direct.

As mentioned, Diaz will be seen in ‘Back in Action’, which is still awaiting a schedule date from Netflix.

Reeves, meanwhile, was most recently seen in successful fourth ‘John Wick’ outing and has several titles upcoming or in development, including ‘Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’ (which recently got pushed back to 2025), action comedy ‘Good Fortune’ and the still nebulous ‘Constantinesequel, which would see him return as occult detective John Constantine.

Things are changing on the ‘John Wick’ spin-off front. While ‘Ballerina’, the Ana de Armas-starring new movie, had been scheduled for June 7th, will now move back a year.

But before you start worrying that the High Table has somehow found a way to hobble the main character, fear not: it’s for a good reason.

What is happening with the ‘Ballerina’ movie?

    Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves

According to Deadline, the change is happening so the ‘Ballerina’ team can add in some extra action scenes.

Chad Stahelski, who has directed ever ‘Wick’ movie since the first, has been promoted to oversee the wider franchise for Lionsgate, and is now going to help director Len Wiseman with boosting the action quotient of the new movie. Which makes sense, since the ‘Wick’ films are always full of stunts and set-pieces.

    What’s the story of ‘Ballerina’?

Anjelica Huston as "The Director" in 'John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.'

‘Ballerina’ will follow the Ballerina character, played by de Armas, glimpsed briefly (and there brought to life Unity Phelan) in ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ and tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Which feels fitting for a ‘Wick’ movie.

Wiseman, who has worked on the likes of ‘Underworld’ and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, directed the new movie, based on a script by Shay Hatten (who wrote ‘Chapter Three’).

The cast for the new movie also includes Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Gabriel Byrne, plus ‘Wick’ stalwarts Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick (since the majority of the movie was shot back in 2022).

When will ‘Ballerina’ be in theaters?

The action movie is now targeting a June 6th, 2025 release slot. Which might be a smart move, since it plants a flag on a date that is currently empty of competitors.

What is moving into ‘Ballerina’s old release slot?

If you’re wondering what you can watch instead of ‘Ballerina’, Lionsgate has a plan for that. The studio is moving the new version of ‘The Crow’ to the June 7th date this year.

Directed by Rupert Sanders, the new adaptation of the James O’Barr graphic novel stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven, who is brutally murdered alongside his soulmate Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) when the demons of her dark past catch up with them.

    VUhnt7q2qXPBFbAt2H8vg5

Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

The movie also stars Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger. But it’ll be under plenty of pressure, since the 1994 original is considered a cult classic. And the new movie will be up against Ishana Night Shyamalan’s (daughter of M. Night) horror pic ‘The Watchers’ on that June date.

  • ‘John Wick 4’ Almost Had a More Obvious Final Scene

Before we get into the meat of this story, a quick yet vital SPOILER WARNING if you have somehow not yet seen ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’.

Still with us? Don’t try to make us excommunicado because we somehow broke a rule –– you were warned.

    f9HakKt6vPZWClZUV638w3

    John Wick is dead.

At least, that’s what the end of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ would have you believe. After defeating Bill Skarsgård’s Marquis and beating the High Table for good, it appears Keanu Reeves’ seemingly indestructible assassin has taken one bullet too many, and –– no! –– dies at Paris’ Sacré-Coeur while the sun rises, dreaming of his late loving wife Helen, before being buried in the plot next to her.

But could that have been a plot by our hero to fake his death? According to Chad Stahelski, there was originally a plan to point to Wick’s survival more clearly, but that test audiences didn’t buy that.

    Stahelski on the scene

Here’s what director Stahelski told Empire Magazine about the scene:

“We had a different ending. [The theatrical ending] was the ending Keanu and I wanted, but we shot a different ending. We shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So, it was very clear that he was still alive. The audiences we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending.”

    The future of the franchise

The End. Or is it? The movie does feature Wick getting buried, but a returning main character (and actor) is certainly something that studio Lionsgate would like to see, since according to its CEO, a fifth film is in development, and it has more Wick in the works than your average candle factory.

Stahelski, though, won’t be drawn on specifics of whether there will be more ‘Wick’. He and Reeves mostly knew they weren’t satisfied with how the third movie had left things.

Here’s Stahelski’s statement on coming up with ‘Chapter 4’s finale:

“We didn’t feel like we had done our best. We both felt like we could have ended the series better. We didn’t feel like we stuck the landing, and that’s a shitty feeling. Because we love the character, we love working together, we love the world. I said, ‘I’d be pissed if that’s how they ended the whole series. I’d be pissed at the director,’ And I had just read this treatise on samurai etiquette called Hagakure, the art of the way of dying. And we’re like, ‘Yeah, he’s got to die. And we got to come up with the coolest way to make the happen. We’ve got to make it all about, ‘you can only have a good death if you had a good life’.’ That’s the first line we wrote on a napkin in Japan, three years out. We wrote the movie backwards off that one thing.”

So, while there are currently no official plans for more main ‘Wick’ movies from the creative team, ‘Chapter 4’ has been successful enough that you can all but guarantee that something will arrive to go along with big-screen spin-off ‘Ballerina’ (starring Anna de Armas) and TV prequel ‘The Continental’.
