  • RIP, ‘Knock Knock Live’: The Pros and Cons of Fox’s Quickly Canceled Show

knock knock live starring ryan seacrest“Knock Knock Live” vanished faster than the lions in Africa.

After just two episodes, the show has been canceled. The concept was great; they show up to unsuspecting people’s homes, give them cash and prizes (and sometimes their neighbors get cash and prizes), all with a celebrity host, Ryan Seacrest, they never dreamed they’d meet. But the show was far from perfect. Here are some things I loved (and hated) about Fox’s “Knock Knock Live.”

In just two episodes, “Knock Knock” had me crying. I’m an intimidating, muscle-bound black man; I look so tough when I walk in a room… the plants curl up and die! But still, “Knock Knock” had me crying. David Beckham and Justin Bieber were in the two episodes; Bieber gave a sick girl and her family $50,000 and Beckham gave an even bigger and deserving struggling family $100,000. In both cases, you could feel and see the tears of joy streaming down their faces. In this economy, where so many are struggling to survive, there is no better gift you could give a hard-working family than cold hard cash. I loved it!

My other favorite part of the show was when they blew $25,000 out of a cannon and let the neighbors participate in the windfall of loot flying all over the place. “Knock Knock” gave them huge purse-like bags to stuff with as much cash as they could grab. What a wonderful gesture to include the neighbors in that.

The part of “Knock Knock Live” that I didn’t care for was seeing the crew show up at a nice-looking house in a nice-looking neighborhood. The first thing that would pop in my head was, Why are they at that nice house and in a nice neighborhood? These people don’t need any gifts or money, they should only go to low-income areas. When they went inside some of those houses it looked like the people living there were already ballin’ and out of control. It looks so much better for the show, and is so much more well-deserved, when people who are struggling to make ends meet got knock knocked.

While “Knock Knock Live” had its pros and cons, I liked it more than I disliked it and was surprised to see it canceled so quickly. Perhaps income inequality is the blame. Maybe so many people are struggling to survive nowadays that anyone in that boat isn’t interested in watching a bunch of people hit the lotto.

    RIP, “Knock Knock Live.”

  • Fox Cancels Ryan Seacrest’s ‘Knock Knock Live’ After 2 Episodes

knock knock live, ryan seacrestFox spent a lot of time and money touting its new reality series, “Knock Knock Live.” Unfortunately for the network, no one was very keen on answering — or watching.

According to Variety, Fox has pulled the show from its schedule after airing only two episodes, following dismal ratings for the Ryan Seacrest-hosted series. “Knock Knock” featured Seacrest and other celebrities — including Justin Bieber — knocking on strangers’ doors and offering them prizes, but viewers just didn’t take the bait.

Variety reports that the show’s premiere episode on July 21 nabbed a paltry 1.7 million viewers, “marking the smallest demo rating for any Big Four series premiere this summer.” That’s gotta hurt. And apparently, despite desperate cross-promotion efforts on other Fox series including “So You Think You Can Dance,” this week’s installment didn’t fare much better, leading Fox to pull the plug, effectively cancelling the show.

The network plans to fill “Knock Knock”‘s Tuesday at 9 p.m. timeslot with a one-hour encore of “The Last Man on Earth” on August 4, and half-hour reruns of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Last Man” going forward, until the fall schedule picks up.

Seacrest, who also executive produced “Knock Knock,” will pick himself up and return for the final season of “American Idol,” which starts in January.

  • Even Justin Bieber Non-Fans Think He Should’ve Won This ‘Lip Sync Battle’

What a show! Both “Lip Sync Battle” — and by A-games we mean they both channeled their feminine sides and also played dress-up in ridiculous outfits. They sold their performances. But many fans — even people who would never dream of defending Justin Bieber — think he may have been robbed of a win. Not that Deion slacked, especially in his “Like a Virgin” crawl. That was magic. But JB completely committed to his Ozzy impression in “Crazy Train” and pulled a 180 for a cheeky but heartfelt rendition of Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” Ozzy vs. Madonna was a close one, but when JB put on his “Big Girl” pants, he slayed Deion’s “Play That Funky Music.” The Biebs deserved to win just for the stones to open with that “surprise song,” as host LL Cool J put it.

Watch all four performances and decide who you think should’ve won. Congrats to Deion, but we would’ve gone the other way. Then again, maybe losing at LSB is the kind of thing that will just help Justin’s reputation. A lot of commenting fans seem to think he did a great job and should’ve won. Now, maybe, instead of being seen as a spoiled brat, he’s the unappreciated underdog.

  • ‘Lip Sync Battle’ Is Back With Epic Lineup: Alison Brie, Justin Bieber, ‘Empire’ Cast

Three mouthed-but-not-vocalized cheers for the return of “Lip Sync Battle”! Spike TV’s epic celebrity showdown, hosted by LL Cool J, was an instant hit when it debuted with Dwayne Johnson vs. Jimmy Fallon back in April. It really picked up steam with the Anne Hathaway vs. Emily Blunt match, traumatized us — in a good way — with Stephen Merchant and later Julianne Hough, then dipped a bit before going on break. Season 1 is not over, but it’s been off the air since May 28. But now it’s back with a vengeance, starting next Thursday, July 9.

    Here’s the upcoming lineup:

    • Alison Brie vs. Will Arnett — July 9
    • Justin Bieber vs. Deion Sanders — July 16
    • Andy Cohen vs. Willie Geist — July 23
    • Victoria Justice vs. Gregg Sulkin — July 30
    • Abbi Jacobson vs. Ilana Glazer — August 6
    • Iggy Azalea vs. Nick Young — August 13
    • Terrence Howard vs. Taraji P. Henson — August 20

The shows were all pre-taped, so check out Spike’s preview, showing Will Arnett’s “Lego” routine; badass Alison Brie shooting down a photo of her opponent, Arnett (she’s totally winning her battle, you can tell just from the promo); Justin Bieber going full Ozzy, then reviving Deion Sanders; Terrence Howard playing dress up and the “Empire” stars getting back-up from Mary J. Blige herself:

Bring it on! This is serious must-see TV, so you’d better be there. Shows air at 10 p.m. Thursdays on Spike TV, then the best clips are usually posted to the show’s YouTube page.

  • Best of Late Night TV: David Letterman’s Final Show, Justin Bieber Carpool Karaoke

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

This is it. The end of an era. Wednesday, May 20 was all about David Letterman’s retirement from late night TV after 33 years, and his final night as host of “The Late Show.” Stephen Colbert will take over “Late Show” on September 8. You should head to TheLateShow on YouTube to catch up on all the videos posted from the past few weeks, but here are the main segments from last night — if nothing else, you should watch the epic star-studded Top 10 list.

Here’s Dave’s final show entrance, with the crowd standing to cheer: Dave’s final monologue started after he forced the audience to calm down and stop chanting for him. He said they stood so long they didn’t have time for the “gifts to the audience” segment. He also revealed the bad news: “I’ll be honest with you, it’s beginning to look like I’m not gonna get ‘The Tonight Show.’” Haha. Also, he’s sick of being asked what he’s going to do when he’s retired, but he took a moment to reveal (joking, of course) his plans: There had to be a last Top 10 list, so here’s “Top Ten Things I’ve Always Wanted to Say To Dave,” with each one read by a different celebrity: Alec Baldwin, Barbara Walters, Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Peyton Manning, Tina Fey, and Bill Murray back with No. 1: There was a video with U.S. Presidents noting that “Our Long National Nightmare Is Over” … capped by President Obama and Dave: Here’s “The Best of David Letterman and Kids”: Dave very briefly wished good luck to Stephen Colbert — who must know he has big shoes to fill. Foo Fighters performed “Everlong,” accompanied by highlights from Dave’s 33-year late night career: And here’s Dave’s final thank you and good night, after 6,000 shows, asking people to save some of this merited or unmerited praise for his funeral: Other stuff happened on late night TV beyond Letterman’s final show. In case you didn’t see it before, here’s Seth Meyers recreating Letterman’s “Late Night” opening from 1982: Patton Oswalt was on “Conan” and he and Conan O’Brien talked about being inspired by David Letterman. There were a lot of “Star Wars” comparisons. When it came time for “Conan” to hit the same timeframe as “Late Show,” Conan O’Brien told everyone to record “Conan” but change the channel to watch “The Late Show.” Very cute. Respect. Over on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” James had his own Top 10 list, called “The Top 10 Things We Will Miss About David Letterman”: James closed his episode with a classic Letterman move – dropping watermelons off the CBS roof: Halle Berry and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were both on “The Late Late Show” and they too talked about Letterman: Also, here’s another round of James’ Carpool Karaoke — this time with Justin Bieber and James singing “Baby.” Over on “The Tonight Show,” Jeff Foxworthy hosted a special edition of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” with Pitbull and Jimmy Fallon. David Duchovny was also on Fallon’s show and revealed he was “The Head Boy” in high school. Dwyane Wade was on Seth’s show and talked about being a Groomzilla. Kellan Lutz was also on Seth’s show and talked about being an inventor with his fifth patent:

  • Best of Late Night TV: Adam Sandler’s Awesome Letterman Ode, Anna Kendrick’s Egg Russian Roulette

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

David Letterman is ending his show next week, May 20, so he has major guest after major guest lined up every night. Last week, President Obama stopped by, and on Tuesday night, former President Bill Clinton joined Dave on “Late Show.” Clinton talked about his possible return to the White House with Hillary as POTUS, and how his perspective has changed as Grandpa to little Charlotte, who is 7.5 months old. Adam Sandler was also on “Late Show” and he performed a sweet, funny and beautiful tribute to Dave. (Love the “blow” line re: the Jimmys.) This is what Sandler really does best.Pitch Perfect 2” star Anna Kendrick was on “The Tonight Show” and she played Jimmy Fallon’s classic “Egg Russian Roulette.” She was the first woman to do the game, which is a bit odd, but she and Jimmy were both really nervous about getting the yolk on their heads. Terry Crews was also on Fallon’s show and he shared the story of his worst summer job, which started out as his best job: James Corden also had a great night on “The Late Late Show,” including … was that a cameo from Justin Bieber on drums at the end? Susan Sarandon, Brooklyn Decker, and Tori Kelly were all guests on “The Late Late Show.” Susan Sarandon talked about her first grandmother’s day this year, and she also discussed the reality of vampires. And now you must watch these three alternate endings of “Thelma & Louise” with James and Susan showing what *could* have happened after that car launch: SNL’s Leslie Jones was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and she discussed her favorite SNL moments, basketball, riding a horse for the first time, Jim Carrey’s “sexy” beard, her obsession with James Spader (love it), and how she handles Twitter haters. Basically, she’ll put you on blast. Reese Witherspoon was on “Conan” and they shared some of her old child modeling photos. She was intense! As they joked, she may have invented Blue Steel back in 1991. She also discussed her elaborate food Instagrams; she tries to go the extra mile for her son, who will not eat anything. Adam Devine was also on “Conan” and explained why the Coast Guard is now mad at “Workaholics.”

  • Justin Bieber (So Hot Right Now) Joins ‘Zoolander 2’: See His Blue Steel Photo

FASHION-FRANCE-VALENTINOIt may seem too campy to have Justin Bieber join the cast of “Zoolander 2,” but this is Derek Zoolander we’re talking about, and he definitely seems like the kind of guy who would either bond with or be threatened by the Biebs. Maybe both.

It’s not clear if JB will have a cameo in the sequel or if he has a major role, but both the music superstar and Ben Stiller shared the same black-and-white staredown on Instagram. That’s some serious Blue Steel they are giving each other. Justin looks like a young Derek himself, and in his caption for the pic below, Justin was quick to hashtag that “#itsawignotmynewhair.” Maybe Justin plays a new model on the scene, like the new Hansel. Not that anyone could ever replace Hansel. Entertainment Weekly noted that several other stars are also expected to join original cast members Stiller, Owen Wilson, Christine Taylor, and Billy Zane, including Penelope Cruz, Olivia Munn, Kristen Wiig and maybe even Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

What do you think about the Z2 scoop so far, including JB’s status? If you need help sorting through your emotions, you know what will help: Orange mocha frappuccino!

  • Best of Late Night TV: David Duchovny’s Big ‘X-Files’ Cast News, Cute Puppies Predict NCAA Champions (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

On Tuesday night, Jimmy Fallon welcomed back his panel of adorable puppies to predict the NCAA Championship from among the Final Four. Who will be the national champs – Kentucky, Wisconsin, Michigan State or Duke? Cute puppies crawling over each other in their cutesness = win. Spoiler alert: They must’ve put something nasty in the Duke bowl ’cause no one went for it. No one. Ethan Hawke and Jimmy Fallon broke out their guitars for “Bob Dylan Lullabies.” Willie and Korie Robertson of Duck Dynasty shared some “Tales From the Set,” focusing on Willie’s injuries: David Duchovny was on “Late Show with David Letterman” Tuesday night and talked about the return of “The X-Files” to TV. David said he and Gillian Anderson (Scully) will be back, as well as Mitch Pileggi (Skinner) and the Cigarette Smoking Man. (Yes!) Did David ever know they’d bring this show back? “When they developed Spanx I knew I had a shot.” Still deadpan after all these years. And he looks good. Mulder aged well. He said it’s a strange phenomenon that people still want to see these characters, but he’s grateful. David also talked about parenting and his new album (he has a song out on iTunes – love Letterman’s reaction). He has become the set-up guy for his kids’ jokes. Ludacris was on “Conan” and discussed his new album, his crazy in-air marriage proposal and his beloved ’93 Acura Legend. You’d think a “Furious 7” star would drive something flashier but he still drives it after 283,000 miles. He has replaced everything on it but it’s dear to him. Keith Urban was also on “Conan” and talked about a disastrous attempt to play piano in the dark at a concert. It’s actually really funny, he tells the story well. They also shared an exclusive video premiere for “Raise ‘Em Up.” Kurt Russell was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and talked about working with Quentin Tarantino for a second time. He said working with T is like working on a pirate ship. He got a credit at the end of “Kill Bill” and he explains why. Kurt also talked about working on “Furious 7” and his crazy mustache. The stache is for the Tarantino Western. Jeff Ross was on JKL and recorded a comedy special at a jail. Jimmy also had a game called “Don’t Talk Into This Mic and Win $10” “Undateable” actor/comedian Chris D’Elia was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” talking about Justin Bieber’s roast. He had a lot of Selena Gomez fans reach out to him on Twitter ahead of time, demanding he leave Selena out of it. So he wrote Selena jokes.

  • Tom Hanks Stars in the New Carly Rae Jepsen Video and It’s Amazing (VIDEO)

The new Carly Rae Jepsen song, “I Really Like You,” is a nugget of pure pop perfection. With its glittery synths, soaring bridge and insane, never-ending chorus (how many “really”s is that?) Jepsen is something of an unrated pop performer; her debut album “Kiss” showcased that “Call Me Maybe” was not some fluke. But this rivals even that showstopper, at least in terms of it getting lodged in your head like nothing else. It’s profoundly brilliant. And yet, somehow, there was still room for improvement, as exhibited by the jaw-dropping music video that stars none other than America’s Sweetheart, Tom Hanks.

The video almost exclusively features Hanks, who wakes up singing the song and, throughout the day, continues to sing along to it. This means walking through SoHo (how good are his gloves?), signing autographs, posing for selfies, and hailing a cab, all while singing this ridiculously catchy pop confection. When he finally does meet up with Jepsen… Well if you don’t have a dopey grin plastered across your face, then that should do it. (Yes, that’s another very famous face who joins the dance party.)

If you need a Monday morning pick-me-up, this should do the trick. %Slideshow-315%
