While ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022 seemed to signal the end for the franchise that was spawned way back in 1993 with ‘Jurassic Park,’ turns out it was less of an extinction-level event and more of a brief pause between eras.

Because, far from letting a cash dinosaur just wither into nothingness, Universal began making plans for another movie featuring giant beasties and the humans who want to help, hunt or otherwise avoid being snack food last year.

What is now officially titled ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ has come together quickly, and now with shooting still in progress, we have the first look at some of the human characters including those played by Scarlett Johansson, ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.

Here’s the official synopsis for the new movie:

“Five years after the events of ‘Jurassic World Dominion,’ the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”

Who is who in ‘Jurassic World Rebirth?

Johansson is playing skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs.

When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.

Bailey (who will also be seen in Universal’s ‘Wicked’ this Thanksgiving) plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis.

Rupert Friend (last seen in ‘Asteroid City’) appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (‘The Lincoln Lawyer’) plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.

The cast also includes Luna Blaise, David Iacono and Audrina Miranda as Reuben’s family. And, as members of Zora and Krebs’ crews, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain and Ed Skrein.

Who is making ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’?

    'The Creator' director Gareth Edwards.

With longtime producers Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley returning to shepherd the new movie (and original ‘Park’ director Steven Spielberg as an executive producer as usual), the first other major player hired was scriptwriter David Koepp.

He, of course, wrote the first two ‘Jurassic’ movies, working from the concepts and characters originally created by novelist Michael Crichton.

Directing this time is Gareth Edwards, who is best known for the likes of ‘Monsters’ in 2010, 2014’s ‘Godzilla,’ ‘2016’s ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and, most recently, last year’s sci-fi pic ‘The Creator.’

When will ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ be in theaters?

Amblin and Universal have scheduled the new ‘Jurassic’ outing for release on July 2nd, 2025.

It might seem right now that every casting news story is either about Rian Johnson’s newKnives Out’ movie or the latest ‘Jurassic World’ entry. And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong to think that.

Currently it’s the turn of the ‘Jurassic’ franchise, which is nearing a June shoot and has already scooped up Scarlett Johansson, ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey, ‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Rupert Friend and ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’s Manuel Garcia-Rulfo into its mighty casting maw.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has heard that ‘Green Book’ Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is making a deal to join them.

Perhaps the biggest question on our minds is what this means for Marvel’s ‘Blade’, to which Ali has been attached to star for a couple of years now, but given all the delays on the vampire story, we figure he’s filling time while he waits for it to be ready.

And what better way to wait than hanging out with some dinosaurs?

Universal is mostly keeping the details of the new movie trapped behind electric fences and concrete barriers for now. What can we predict? Big-toothed beasts causing trouble for the humans that foolishly interact with them.

A bigger question, though, is which humans… It’ll reportedly be set in the ‘Jurassic World’ era, but won’t directly connect to the previous three movies, so an appearance from characters such as those films’ Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) or Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howards) appears unlikely for now –– though we won’t rule anything out at this point.

From the sounds of it, this new movie would take the franchise in a fresh new direction, so we’re also not predicting (for now) the return of ‘Jurassic Park’ trio Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Jeff Goldblum’s chaotician Malcolm.

Ali might be in talks, but certainly seems to be close to locked in. Unlike Dev Patel and Colman Domingo, who have both appeared on rumor sites connected with the movie. Domingo was mentioned as the potential human antagonist of the new ‘Jurassic’ outing, but we could certainly see Ali taking that role.

With production now so close, we’ll have to wait and see if either of them actually materializes as cast members.

Gareth Edwards, who last made ‘The Creator’, was picked to direct after ‘The Fall Guy’s David Leitch was briefly in talks only to step away over a perceived lack of creative control and the fast turnaround planned for this one (see the release date details below).

Longtime producer Frank Marshall, who worked on all three of the ‘Jurassic World’ movies is on board this one also, and the studio seems bullish about the progress so far. And of course, Spielberg will weigh in since he helped birth the franchise.

Universal, according to Deadline, now has ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Fellow Travelers’ actor Jonathan Bailey in talks to join Johansson in the movie.

While Johansson is locked in and Bailey appears close to a deal, there are other actors whose names have been floated as potentials. Scooper Daniel Richtman has pointed to Dev Patel possibly taking on a role (his directorial debut, ‘Monkey Man’, produced by Jordan Peele, was picked up for distribution and released by Universal a couple of weeks ago).

And Richtman has also mentioned that Colman Domingo, of ‘Rustin’, ‘The Color Purple’ and –– the Universal connection –– ‘Drive-Away Dolls’, is being talked about as the movie’s villain. The human one, of course.

Still, the studio hit a road block recently when, after entering talks with ‘Bullet Train’ director David Leitch (whose new movie based on 1980s series ‘The Fall Guy’ has been earning praise with those who at the company have seen the footage), it saw him step away, concerned that the fast pace of the ‘Jurassic’ development meant he wouldn’t have enough say in its creative direction.

Fortunately for Universal, it has found an experienced, inventive filmmaker to actually take the job –– Gareth Edwards, whose credits include ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, 2014’s ‘Godzilla’ and, most recently, ‘The Creator’.

Moving with the speed of a hungry raptor, Universal is looking to get its planned new ‘Jurassic World’ movie into theaters as quickly as possible.

The studio already has veteran writer David Koepp hard at work on a screenplay for the latest entry, and from a new report at Deadline, a director is now in talks to get it made.

David Leitch, who has directed the likes of ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ for the company (not to mention the upcoming movie adaptation of ‘80s TV series ‘The Fall Guy’, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt), has started to make a deal for the big gig on the new dino-pic.

It’ll reportedly be set in the ‘Jurassic World’ era, but won’t directly connect to the previous three movies, so an appearance from characters such as those films’ Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) or Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) appears unlikely for now –– though we won’t rule anything out at this point.

David Koepp is hard at work on the script. He’s someone who has no small experience with these stories, since he wrote both 1993 classic ‘Jurassic Park’ (the movie directed by Steven Spielberg that re-ignited moviegoers’ passion for dinos in the first place) and its 1997 sequel, ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’ (also directed by Spielberg).

Koepp, of course, has worked a lot with Spielberg, but is also a much sought-after writer beyond those collaborations (he has two movies on the way via Steven Soderbergh) and is a filmmaker in his own right.

Longtime producer Frank Marshall, who worked on all three of the ‘Jurassic World’ movies is on board this one also, and the studio seems bullish about the progress so far.

As for Leitch, he’s become something of a producer as well as his directing work, helping to shepherd other filmmakers’ projects through the 87North company he runs with producing partner and wife Kelly McCormick. He would be an executive producer here in addition to calling the shots.

When will the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie be in theaters?

Also mentioned in Deadline’s report about Leitch is news that Universal has set the date of July 2nd, 2025 for the movie, clearly looking to take advantage of the Independence Day holiday and a prime summer movie slot that has little major competition as of yet.

    • Universal has a new ‘Jurassic World’ movie in the works.
    • ‘Jurassic Park’ writer David Koepp is on script duty.
    • It’ll reportedly launch a new franchise based in the ‘Jurassic’ world.

Despite bringing dino-action back to our screens with three giant ‘Jurassic World’ movies in 2015, 2018 and 2022, Universal is apparently ready for more. And given the solid box office for pretty much anything with ‘Jurassic’ in its title for the studio, this is perhaps not as shocking as it might seem.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new movie set in the ‘Jurassic World’ sphere is in the works, with someone who has plenty of experience wrangling terrible lizards (at least on the page) involved: veteran screenwriter David Koepp.

What’s the story of the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie?

That is one thing that the Reporter’s sources couldn’t pinpoint –– while it will certainly feature plenty of giant reptiles roaring around (and a host of others), the exact story details are trapped in amber for now.

It’ll reportedly be set in the ‘Jurassic World’ era, but won’t directly connect to the previous three movies, so an appearance from characters such as those films’ Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) or Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howards) appears unlikely for now –– though we won’t rule anything out at this point.

From the sounds of it, this new movie would take the franchise in a fresh new direction, so we’re also not predicting (for now) the return of ‘Jurassic Park’ trio Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum).

Who is making the new ‘Jurassic World’ movie?

So far, the project is at scripting stage, with Koepp hard at work.

Would he want to step up and direct a new ‘Jurassic World’? We’d have to say it’s unlikely given his usual smaller-scale directing gigs.

Longtime producer Frank Marshall, who worked on all three of the ‘Jurassic World’ movies is on board this one also, and the studio seems bullish about the progress so far.

When will the new movie be in theaters?

While it would seem shockingly fast given the usual scope, scale and effects load of a movie such as this, the Reporter’s story mentions that things are far enough along for a potential –– heavy emphasis on “potential” –– 2025 release date.
