First ‘Jumanji’ Sequel Photo Brings the Band Back Together

The sequel to hit Sony flick “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is due to launch later this year, featuring returning foursome  Dwayne JohnsonKaren Gillan, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black as the film’s video game avatar leads. The first photo from the new film brings that gang back together, and while on the surface it looks like not much has changed, one star suggests that there’s more than meets the eye.

In the image — shared by both Sony and Johnson on their social media pages on Tuesday — we see Hart, Gillan, Black, and Johnson give the camera their best blue steel gazes.

But as Johnson noted on Instagram, “things may not be as they seem,” and the speakeasy-looking setting in which the characters are posing certainly appears to be worlds away from the titular jungle where the last film took place. Is this a major clue about the plot of the sequel? Or just something to throw off fans before more concrete details are revealed?

Whatever’s going on, we’re intrigued. The reported addition of new characters played by Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, and Danny Glover doesn’t hurt, either.

We’ll find out what’s happening when the as-yet-untitled “Jumanji” sequel hits theaters on December 13.

The next “Jumanji” adventure is going to be full of familiar faces.

Several “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” stars have agreed to reprise their roles in the next film, and the latest is Nick Jonas, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The singer-slash-actor joins the sequel’s previously announced stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. Furthermore, the actors who played their teen characters — Ser’Darius Blain, Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, and Morgan Turner — are also set to return.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” centers on a group of four teens who play the Jumanji video game and find themselves transported into its world and into the body of avatars. Jonas’s character is Alex, a man who has been trapped in the game for years in the body of an avatar named Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough. Plot details for the sequel haven’t been revealed, so we don’t know yet how he ties into the new story from writers Jake Kasdan, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg.

In addition to all the returning stars in the upcoming “Jumanji” sequel, there will be franchise newcomers, too. Actors Awkwafina (“Crazy Rich Asians”), Donald Glover (“Solo: A Star Wars Story”), and Danny DeVito (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) are all joining for what Johnson has teased is “dynamite.”

It looks like it’s the more the merrier in the jungle.

    Screen Gems

“Lethal Weapon” star Danny Glover joins Danny DeVito (and Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart) in the upcoming “Jumanji” sequel.

We don’t yet know what role he’ll be playing, but it’ll be fun to see him (potentially) share the screen with Awkwafina , Karen Gillan and Jack Black.

“From Awkafina to Danny DeVito to now one of my action heroes, Danny Glover — it’s been awesome having so many actors and OG legends raise their hands wanting to come and play in our Jumanji universe,” star and producer Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter. “‘Who turns into who?’ will always be the fun magic sauce for our audience.”

The 72-year-old Glover is not slowing down: Last year he costarred in “The Old Man & the Gun,” “Sorry to Bother You,” and “Proud Mary.” And he executive-produced the Oscar-nominated documentary “Strong Island.”

His upcoming movies include Jim Jarmusch’s “The Dead Don’t Die,” “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” and the thriller “The Lighthouse,” directed by his younger brother, Martin Glover.

  • Danny DeVito Joins ‘Jumanji’ Sequel

    Disney

Danny DeVito is the latest actor to join the sequel to “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”

Along with new addition Awkafina (“Crazy Rich Asians”), the sequel will bring back the original cast with Jake Kasdan returning as director.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” a loose sequel to the 1995 film, earned $962 million worldwide. It followed four teens transported into the world of Jumanji, where they’re turn into their adult avatars. Including, hilariously, a teenage girl who’s now Jack Black — and crushing on her now beefed-up schoolmate played by Dwayne Johnson.

While we don’t know who DeVito is playing, it’s likely he’ll be a game character as well.

“The magic of ‘Jumanji’ is who becomes who. And the idea of Danny DeVito joining our cast was too irresistible and something we knew we wanted to deliver to our audience this upcoming Christmas. Dwanta Claus loves everyone,” Johnson said.

DeVito will next be seen in as the circus ringmaster in Tim Burton’s live-action “Dumbo.”

Could there be even more laughs in the “Jumanji 2”?

Following 2017’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan, another comedian is reportedly poised to join the cast. Rapper-slash-actress Awkwafina is in talks for a role, Variety reports. She has made a splash in films lately, including “Ocean’s 8” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” both of which opened in 2018.

There is no word yet on what her role would be, but she would presumably be along for another adventure involving the game Jumanji. In “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” four high school students were transported into the game’s dangerous world and turned into their adult avatars. It was a sequel to 1995’s “Jumanji,” which was based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 book of the same name. One big difference was that the game went from being a board game to a video game.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” co-writer and director Jake Kasdan is back for the film, and he gave what Johnson called a “dynamite pitch” in June. Apparently, they “couldn’t stop laughing,” so we can see Awkwafina being a good fit.

Kasdan co-wrote the “Jumanji 2” script with Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, both of whom worked on “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.” They’ll have a chance to equal or even surpass their recent success. The 2017 film was a huge hit a year ago, earning more than $962 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo data.

Seven Bucks Productions’ Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia are producing, along with Matt Tolmach of Matt Tolmach Productions and Kasdan.

“Jumanji 2” is set to open Dec. 13.
