Michael Gambon, a veteran British actor who drew a brand new generation of fans when he stepped into the role of ‘Harry Potter’s wise, mysterious Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, has died. He was 82.

A jovial actor in the classic British style, he once said that he preferred playing villains, and indeed put in some memorable turns as menacing characters, including a Satanic crime boss in Peter Greenaway’s ‘The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.’

Michael Gambon: Early life and career

Born in Dublin on October 19th, 1940, Gambon was raised in London and originally trained as an engineer, following in the footsteps of his father. He made his theater debut in a production of ‘Othello’ in Dublin.

In 1963 he got his first big break with a minor role in ‘Hamlet,’ the National Theatre Company’s opening production, under the directorship of the legendary Laurence Olivier.

Gambon soon became a distinguished stage actor and received critical acclaim for his leading performance in ‘Life of Galileo,’ directed by John Dexter. He was frequently nominated for awards and won the Laurence Olivier Award 3 times and the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards twice.

    Michael Gambon: TV work

On the small screen, Gambon played the central role in the BBC’s ‘The Singing Detective’, and also portrayed a sleuth in an early ‘90s adaptation of Georges Simenon’s ‘Maigret’ novels.

He starred as Prior Walter in HBO’s adaptation of ‘Angels in America’, appeared in the miniseries adaptation of ‘Potter’ creator J.K. Rowling’s ‘The Casual Vacancy’, and had a recurring role in psychological horror series ‘Fortitude’. He also, notably, appeared on cult UK car series ‘Top Gear,’ taking a corner so quickly in the ‘Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car’ segment that it was subsequently named ‘Gambon’ in his honor.

Recently, he narrated the Coen Brothers’ ‘Hail, Caesar!’, and lent his voice to ‘Paddington’ and ‘Paddington 2’ as the titular bear’s Uncle Pastuzo. One of his final film roles was playing theatre impresario Bernard Delfont in 2019’s Judy Garland biopic ‘Judy’.

  • ‘Judy’ Trailer: Renée Zellweger Lives Judy Garland’s Last Days

‘Judy’ Trailer: Renée Zellweger Lives Judy Garland’s Last Days

    Roadside Attractions

The curtains come down on Judy Garland’s bright, bold, tragic life in the new full-length trailer for “Judy.

Renée Zellweger transforms into the iconic actress and singer for the biopic, which takes place in the winter of 1968, when the 47-year-old arrives in London to performa  series of sold-out concerts at the Talk of the Town nightclub.

The film examines her stormy relationships with her family, managers, musicians, and fans.

Zellweger reportedly took music lessons and studied Garland’s choreography from the Talk of the Town shows. She also underwent extensive hair and makeup sessions while filming.

“Judy” also stars Finn Wittrock as Mickey Deans (Garland’s fifth husband), Michael Gambon as manager Bernard Delfton, Rufus Sewell as Sid Luft (her third husband), and Gemma-Leah Devereux as a young Liza Minnelli.

“I had always wanted to make a film that explores great performance and its cost,” said director Rupert Goold in a statement. “For over 40 years Judy Garland had laughed and loved and entertained no matter what life threw at her, and her public adored her for it. But she paid a price in a childhood lost to Hollywood, an emotional exhaustion and a yearning for a ‘normal’ life beyond the rainbow.”

“Judy” opens in theaters September 27.

  • Renée Zellweger Heading to Netflix to Lead New Social Thriller Series ‘What/If’

Renée Zellweger Heading to Netflix to Lead New Social Thriller Series ‘What/If’

    Bridget Jones's Baby
    Universal Pictures

Welcome to series television — and the world of streaming — Renée Zellweger!

We haven’t seen too much of the Oscar winner in the past few years, except for “Bridget Jones’s Baby” in 2016 and “Same Kind of Different as Me” in 2017. She has some film projects lined up, but now she also has this new Netflix series “What/If.”

According to Netflix, “What/If” is a “social thriller” series that will explore the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. Each season is meant to tackle a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life.

Zellweger has a one-year series regular deal for “What/If.” This will be her first major TV role. She plays a character named Anne; Deadline shared more details:

“I hear the 10-episode first season focuses on two struggling newlyweds who accept a powerful woman’s (Zellweger) ethically perilous proposition to secure a badly needed financial windfall.

Zellweger’s Anne is a shrewd and mercurial San Francisco venture capitalist. She is magnetically charismatic, seductive, charming, even vulnerable when it serves her purpose. But she’s also a virtuoso of deception with a cauldron of destructive secrets, including a deeply buried metaphorical deal with the devil that set the course for her life back when she was still just a girl herself.”

Interesting. So it sounds like this will be another anthology (like so many other shows these days, which is fine) focusing on new characters and stories each season.

“What/If” comes from “Revenge” creator Mike Kelley. The rest of the executive team is pretty impressive, too. Executive Producers: Mike Kelley, Melissa Loy (Page Fright); Alex Gartner, Charles Roven (Atlas Entertainment); Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke (Compari Entertainment).

In addition to this series, we can also look forward to seeing Zellweger as Judy Garland in the musical biodrama “Judy,” which will arrive in theaters either in late 2018 or sometime in 2019.
