Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery‘ is the third film in the murder mystery franchise starring Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc. Moviefone was in attendance at a recent press conference featuring writer and director Rian Johnson and star Josh O’Connor, where they reflected on the making of the movie.

    1) Rian Johnson Says ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ Is A Very Personal Story

Rian Johnson was asked if writing this third film was easier now that he already had two under his belt to which he replied no, because it was very personal for him.

Rian Johnson: Absolutely not. This is by far the hardest thing I’ve ever written, actually. This one was tough. And that means at the tail end of it, I’m just even more proud of kind of how it came out and just feel so good about it, but during the process itself — and it wasn’t necessarily because the mystery itself was more complex, although it kind of was. It was more the thematic elements of it. Because the movie’s about faith. That’s something that is very personal to me. I grew up very religious. I was very personally Christian when I was younger, up through my early 20s. It was just a big part of my life. And I am not a believer anymore.

    2) Josh O’Connor Reveals His Faith Helped Him With This Role

Josh O’Connor in ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix © 2025.

Josh O’Connor talks how he was able to walk a fine line between comedy and tragedy due to his own faith.

Josh O’Connor: From a practical sense, this job is the greatest luxury and gift to be able to do it. I just want to try everything, and whether I’m good at it or not sometimes. But really, you’re able to do that with someone like Rian. And, first of all, the early conversations about faith was a big get-in for me. And that was something that, like Rian, has been in my mind for a long time. I grew up Irish Catholic and church going, and I think have quite a strong faith. It doesn’t necessarily have a clear home. And so all those questions that Rian was asking were ever-present in my life. And so I say that to say that, I think underneath, you are able to dance and do the comedy side if underneath there’s something of a profound truth bubbling underneath that role. And Rian’s so good at bringing those moments out. And it means that you are able to dance that fine line between comedy and grief and tragedy, which is very often the way.

    3) Josh O’Connor Says There Is Nothing Like A ‘Knives Out’ Set

Take one look at an ensemble cast for a Rian Johnson ‘Knives Out’ movie and it is clear that top-notch actors want to work with him. Josh O’Connor reveals there is truly nothing like the set of one of these movies.

Josh O’Connor: Rian alluded to, and I can vouch for it, Rian’s an actor’s director. And so, so much of his attention, which is extraordinary, if you think about it, obviously, where Rian’s come from and the films he’s come from, he has that in his locker. But when you walk on a Knives Out set, I mean, the sets are extraordinary. The craftspeople are the best, second to none. And so the scale of it is bigger than anything I’ve ever done before. And yet, the time that Rian gives his actors makes it feel no different to being on set with Kelly Reichardt and just figuring out those same questions of like, what is stopping Father Jud from getting what he wants? What has he misunderstood? How does he overcome that? There was one day I was sat next to Rian on the monitor, and Rian was completely entranced. They weren’t filming, but Rian was looking and it was just Daniel, he had his headphones on, and he was doing his thing. And Rian was just loving watching Daniel do his thing, getting into the space.

    4) Every ‘Knives Out’ Film Is Relevant To The Times We Are Living In

Rian Johnson thinks that what works so well about his franchise is that each movie is relevant to the times when it comes out. Because of this, he is not afraid to dicuss things like politics and religion.

Rian Johnson: From the first movie, part of the marching orders I had for myself with these films, and part of what makes them exciting, I love this genre so much. It’s a genre, though, that growing up, I think all of us have mostly seen done as period pieces, usually set in England, and kind of in timeless little villages or something. With the first movie, a big realization for me was that’s not what Agatha Christie did. She never wrote period pieces. She was always writing to her time and her moment. And her books, even later in her career, that were written in the 60s are set in the 60s. And also, I think the murder mystery form, it’s just, because you’re building these suspects, you’re building this little power structure within the suspects. Someone at the top is gonna get killed. It’s a great way of creating a microcosm of society. And so it seemed like a very potent tool to talk about, and hopefully in a fun way that’s still entertaining, to talk about the present moment.

    5) Rian Johnson Is Already Working On The Next ‘Knives Out’ Film

When asked if there is potential for another film in the franchise, Rian Johnson explained that he is working on something else right now, but that he and Daniel Craig have been discussing Benoit Blanc’s next adventure already.

Rian Johnson: I’m writing my next film. It’s not one of these, it’s something original. It’s not because I’m burnt out on these. In fact, I’m energized after making this one and I really hope to come back. I’m already thinking. Daniel and I are already spit balling about what the next one could be down the line. To answer the second part of your question, would I ever let anyone else make these? It’s mine, it’s mine. They’ll pry it out of my cold dead hands. And similarly, if Daniel and I ever stop having fun and we both decide or he decides he doesn’t wanna do it anymore, then as far as I’m concerned, the series is over. This whole thing is just, it’s me and him making these movies together. That’s the joy of it for me. People can make other mysteries all they want, but this is something that’s for him and me. That’s what defines it for me.

Back as usual is Daniel Craig (‘Knives Out’), once more playing smart detective Benoit Blanc, joined by a new ensemble that includes Josh O’Connor (‘Challengers’), Josh Brolin (‘No Country for Old Men’), Glenn Close (‘Fatal Attraction’), Andrew Scott (‘All of Us Strangers’), Cailee Spaeny (‘Alien: Romulus’), Kerry Washington (‘Ray’) and Jeremy Renner (‘The Hurt Locker’).

Writer/director Rian Johnson breathed fresh, sharply-written life into the mystery genre with 2019’s ‘Knives Out.’ And if ‘Glass Onion’ in 2022 was a seemingly lesser (if still entertaining) follow-up, it’s relief to report that third outing ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ has much more in common –– especially in terms of quality character work and central crime –– with the first movie.

Johnson had always intended to make more movies featuring quirky, charismatic sleuth Benoit Blanc and a healthy deal from Netflix means we now have the third.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is a considerable step up from the second film, rivalling the original for how it weaves and then unravels its mystery. Part of the advantage is keeping Craig’s Blanc out of the story initially to give the other characters time to breathe. He still gets plenty of superb moments, but the ensemble as a whole has the space it needs to work.

Johnson has also made a beautiful-looking film, using the gloomy upstate New York setting (albeit filmed in the UK) to really enhance the storytelling.

Craig is a natural as Blanc at this point, and the faith-wrangling storyline really gives him something to chew on. But praise also to Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Thomas Haden Church and Glenn Close in particular, who are all fantastic.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is certainly one of the best mystery movies to be released in the last couple of years, and happily stands alongside the first movie while nodding to its inspirations.

Opening in theaters September 27th is ‘Lee,’ directed by Ellen Kuras and starring Kate Winslet, Josh O’Connor, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Marion Cotillard.

Lee Miller is considered one of the greatest and most important war photographers of the 20th (or any) century, with her images from World War II – the horrors inside a concentration camp, the unspeakable contents of an abandoned train on its way to one of the camps, the haunted faces of both soldiers and survivors – not only indelible but crucial to documenting the defining cataclysm of modern human civilization.

And while ‘Lee,’ the new film from first-time director Ellen Kuras, doesn’t skimp on the visual side either, it follows a very predictable path that is the curse of all biopics these days: the film bounces from incident to incident, bound to a repetitive show-and-tell structure that recounts a lot of Miller’s adult life yet never delves deeply into their meaning or emotional aspects. The result is more museum piece than motion picture.

    Story and Direction

Like most biopics these days, ‘Lee’ begins in the middle of the story – in this case, Miller’s first time shooting photos on a battlefield – and then flashes back to tell us how she got there. Or rather, it flashes both back and forward: the movie then sets up a future timeline in which an aged Miller (Kate Winslet) grudgingly tells her story to an interviewer (Josh O’Connor from ‘Challengers’) who apparently has no idea of her life’s work.

This intrusive narrative device (which it took four credited writers to decide upon) recurs throughout the film, as does a gravelly voiceover from Winslet, both of which signal than the film is going to lead us gently by the hand through the narrative instead of letting it unfold on its own terms.

Even with that, by the time the main thrust of the story gets going, we meet Miller when she has already abandoned her early career as a fashion model in the 1920s and ‘30s and struck out as a photographer in her own right. She’s first seen hanging out topless (along with other women) at a picnic in France, but we have little context for this or the bohemian group of friends she’s with. “I was good at drinking, having sex, and taking pictures, and did all three as much as I could,” says Miller in what’s supposed to be character development.

‘Lee’ is the kind of biopic that expects us to have done our homework beforehand – when Miller meets the love her life, Roland Penrose (Alexander Skarsgård), their almost perfunctory tumble into bed mere hours later seems more baffling than erotic. But Winslet and Skarsgård never quite have the time to develop any real chemistry onscreen after that.

Alexander Skarsgard in 'Lee'. Photo: Kimberley French.

Miller keeps fighting for the chance to go to Europe to shoot the escalating war, but the U.K.’s patriarchal rules of the day forbid it, until she goes around her British editors at Vogue and appeals to her American ones. “It happened so slowly, yet kind of overnight,” says Miller in her voiceover about Hitler’s conquest of Europe, which plays out offscreen during a montage of Miller’s days at Vogue before she finally gets the nod to go to Europe and catch up to the movie’s opening scene.

The bulk of the film is set during Miller’s time near or on the front, where she heads out with fellow photojournalist David Scherman (Andy Samberg) — who may or may not be in love with her but who remains a strictly platonic friend and colleague — to chronicle the war. From there, the movie takes us episodically through the staging of a handful of Miller’s most famous photos, while touching tangentially on sexism, Miller’s own alcoholism (although she seems to conquer both with relative ease), and the fraying of her marriage to Penrose.

The film’s third act is saddled with not one, not two, but three reveals, all of which come far too late in the game. One is a scene between Miller and her Vogue editor, Audrey Withers (Andrea Riseborough), in which Miller confides a devastating episode from her childhood but seems here almost like an afterthought. The other two depend on the film withholding information in a way that makes them seem like cheap tricks rather than important twists.

Ellen Kuras, a longtime cinematographer making her feature directorial debut here, shoots ‘Lee’ beautifully as one might expect, with the early sun-drenched vistas of France giving way to the darker grays, browns, and blues of a war-devastated Europe. But Kuras, like the cast, can’t get around the checklist nature of the script to make us truly feel or understand anything that happens in the film.

    The Cast

(L to R) Noemie Merlant, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, and Alexander Skarsgard in ‘Lee’. Photo: Kimberley French.

If you’re not already in the camp that regards Kate Winslet as one of the greatest actors of her generation, then ‘Lee’ is not the place to start (we’d go with ‘Mare of Easttown,’ ‘Little Children,’ or ‘Mildred Pierce,’ for starters). It’s not that Winslet isn’t as terrific as always here – she is. Her Lee is a fighter all the way, but only has a couple of scenes in which to fully showcase the scope of both her humanity and her own motivations. The Lee Miller we see in the film only comes to life sporadically, and is seemingly driven only by the needs of the narrative.

The rest of the cast falls prey to another typical biopic convention: cast enough well-known actors as people we’re supposed to know, and let their star wattage do the work. Everyone is good as far as it goes, but the film has this air of pre-supposing that you’ll know who Marion Cotillard’s Solange d’Ayen is and fill in the blanks yourself. Only the chameleonic Riseborough makes somewhat of a lasting impression as British Vogue editor Audrey Withers. There is also the token “comic actor taking on a serious role that will surprise you” – in this case it’s Andy Samberg as David Scherman, who again has no real life save that he follows Lee around like a puppy.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Andrea Riseborough and Kate Winslet in 'Lee'. Photo: Kimberley French.
(L to R) Andrea Riseborough and Kate Winslet in ‘Lee’. Photo: Kimberley French.

The problem with telling the story of someone’s life is that life itself is an often-rambling journey, full of highs and lows and rarely imbued with the kind of dramatic turns or climactic moments that are necessary for a film. As a result, most biopics run the risk of seeming shapeless and haphazard even as they follow a formulaic structure that tries to whip the events of the subject’s life into shape (this is why, say, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’ is more successful, in that it focuses on one crucial episode in the subject’s life rather than encompassing them all).

As fascinating and complicated as Lee Miller apparently was, and as important as her work was to understanding an event that nearly brought civilization to its knees and realigned the world order for the foreseeable future, ‘Lee’ doesn’t have the narrative real estate to give us anymore than a snapshot of either the woman or her exploits. The result is a staid, self-important “and then this happened, and then we went here” approach that will leave most viewers, ironically enough, without a clear image of who Lee Miller was.

‘Lee’ receives 5.5 out of 10 stars.

Moviefone: To begin with, as both an actress and a producer, why you were so passionate about this project and why did you want to get Lee’s story told?

Kate Winslet: I started developing the film in 2015, and I knew who Lee Miller was, I was familiar with her photography. But I did not know what she had gone through and how unbelievably determined she was to get permission to go to the front line and to document the war and the atrocities of the Nazi regime for female readers of British Vogue. I could see very clearly that history was in danger of pigeonholing her and defining her through the male gaze. She was described as the former muse and ex-lover of Man Ray, and she was an ex-cover girl, all this former stuff, like the interesting bits of her life had been and gone. But these kind of infantilizing descriptions of who she was, which really bothered me because Lee was a woman who lived many lives within her life, even beyond the war. But for me, this decade of history that we depict in our film was really when Lee became Lee. This was a flawed, middle-aged woman who had the compassion and determination to go and reveal the truth. She wasn’t prepared to take no for an answer. She never took her foot off the gas, and I just had to become like that in trying to get the film made, and in playing her. It has been just an extraordinary privilege to have played this character, honestly.

MF: Finally, you mentioned Lee’s incredible determination, where do you think that came from and is that what you admired most about her?

KW: I mean, yes, it was one of many things that I admired about her, but in general, how Lee Miller walked through the world. I think she was born determined, and she carried herself with incredible grace and compassion. She was redefining femininity 80 years ago to mean resilience, strength, courage and power, all those things that we now as women are doing and we’re raising our daughters that way, and that’s how we are in our friendships. That was Lee. She was already doing that, so (she was an) incredibly contemporary person of her time. But Lee had suffered the most extraordinary, unimaginable trauma as a child, and she was told to never speak of it, and she didn’t. She never told anyone. Consequently, she had a very powerful streak of injustice in her, and that meant whether it was, consciously or subconsciously, that she carried that injustice into her work and had a way of seeing the world that was different. She could see evil. She could see people in a way that meant her photography was unique. She was able to look down into that Rolleiflex camera at her image, but look up and meet people’s gaze head on, and she was unafraid of doing that. That is what sets her work apart, and that is what war correspondents do. They take risks and they put themselves in terrifying situations, but they do it because they want to reveal the truth, and they want to make sure that nothing is hidden. Lee did that for the female readers of British Vogue at a time when not many other women were doing that at all.

    • Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny and Andrew Scott are already aboard.

The famous quote attributed to artist Andy Warhol runs, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Based on the evidence of the last week, it could be modified to “everyone will have the chance to appear in ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’”.

Because writer/director Rian Johnson has been on such a casting spree for the latest outing of canny detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) that it feels like half of Hollywood are involved in the new movie.

The latest to jump aboard? Josh Brolin, most recently seen in ‘Dune: Part Two’.

What’s the story of ‘Knives Out’?

Kicking off with the first, eponymous movie, the ‘Knives Out’ series began as Craig’s southern-fried investigator Blanc probed the secrets of the uptight, wealthy Thrombey clan after the mysterious death of patriarch Harlan (Christopher Plummer).

It featured the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette and Katherine Langford, alongside a breakout turn for Ana de Armas, who played Harlan’s nurse and came to factor much more deeply into the story.

Travelling far from the chilly Massachusetts mansion of the original, ‘Glass Onion’ found Blanc headed overseas.

When tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites some of his nearest and dearest for a getaway on his private Greek island, it soon becomes clear that all is not perfect in paradise. And when someone turns up dead, who better than Blanc to peel back the layers of intrigue?

As well as Craig and Norton, the cast was once more stuffed with talent, including Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

As is befitting the new mystery, Johnson has yet to release any real details about the movie, so it’s a waiting game to see where Blanc ends up this time, and what he has to dig into.

It has only so far been described as his “most dangerous mystery yet.”

    • Rian Johnson is back to write and direct.
    • Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny and Andrew Scott are already aboard.

Rian Johnson is known for building big ensembles to star in his ‘Knives Out’ movies, and the third, ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is certainly keeping that tradition alive.

Recently, we learned that ‘Challengers’ Josh O’Connor and ‘Priscilla’s Cailee Spaeny are both aboard, with ‘All of Us StrangersAndrew Scott announced shortly after them.

Now we have three hefty new names. Deadline brings word that Jeremy Renner will make this his first movie job since his snow plough accident (he’s already been back at work on TV’s ‘Mayor of Kingstown’) while also according to Deadline, Kerry Washington, best known for ‘Scandal’, will be part of the cast. Deadline has also revealed that Mila Kunis (‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall‘) has been added to the cast.

    • Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny are the latest addition to the ‘Knives Out’ movies.
    • Daniel Craig stars.
    • Rian Johnson is gearing up to direct the new film.

Having found success with his first ‘Knives Out’ movie back in 2019 ($300 million at the box office from a relatively thrifty $40 million budget), writer/director Rian Johnson signed a hefty $450 million deal with Netflix to produce two more, with producer Ram Bergman and star Daniel Craig along for the ride.

That deal has already borne fruit with the release of 2022’s ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ and we learned late last week that the third movie in the series, ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ is already gearing up for production.

Beyond Craig, who returns as drawling detective Benoit Blanc, we now know the first two cast members who will be part of the new mystery, as ‘ChallengersJosh O’Connor and ‘Priscilla’/‘Civil War’s Cailee Spaeny are confirmed as joining the cast.

And they’re not the only ones. Shortly after the duo’s casting was reported, news broke that Andrew Scott –– who won praise for his work in ‘All of Us Strangers’ on the big screen and Netflix’s recent TV adaptation ‘Ripley’, was reported by Variety as joining the cast.

  • ‘Aisha’ Exclusive Interview: Letitia Wright

    sQu9M1pP

Opening in theaters on May 10th is the new drama ‘’Aisha,’ which was directed by Frank Berry (‘Michael Inside’) and stars Letitia Wright (‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’) and Josh O’Connor (‘Challengers’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Letitia Wright about her work on ‘Aisha’, her first reaction to the screenplay, why she wanted to be part of the project, her character, working with actor Josh O’Connor, making a smaller film after her MCU work, and collaborating with director Frank Berry on set.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch the interview.

    Letitia Wright in ''Aisha'.
Letitia Wright in ”Aisha’. Photo: BBC Film.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and what spoke to you about this story?

Letitia Wright: My first reactions to the screenplay of ‘Aisha’, I loved the simplicity of it, really. It was more about the internal dialogue of the character. It wasn’t filled with a lot of words, but it was about the situation that Aisha was going through, and it just felt like a piece that I could really stretch myself in and I could connect to the audience without words. It just had a simplicity about it. It was very powerful on its own, without too much stuff going on, and I really loved that, and it just intrigued me. I really wanted to be a part of it.

MF: Can you talk about your approach to the character and what were some of the aspects of Aisha you were excited to explore on screen?

LW: My approach to it was firstly, a lot of research into the provision system, a lot of research into the different stories that Frank put together to form Aisha’s story. I was really drawn to just how many women Aisha as a character represented in real life, and I really wanted to shed light on what was happening to them. Not just women, but men, children, family members, just trying to find a better life and find a new start. So, I was intrigued by that and I wanted to shed light on that with my talent.

    Letitia Wright in ''Aisha'.
Letitia Wright in ”Aisha’. Photo: BBC Film.

MF: Can you talk about the way Aisha is treated in this provision system and how she deals with it emotionally?

LW: With our story, we see that Aisha is kind of playing the waiting game, really. She wants the opportunity, just to live a normal full life and just to be given the access to resources and help that she needs to stand on her own two feet. I feel like our story just focuses on so many different people’s experiences and we’re trying to pick from each experience that we’ve been learning from. Frank did an extensive amount of research before writing the script, and I did too before stepping into the part. We’re just trying to shed light on what people are going through in the day-to-day lives of being in the provision system. It just opens your eyes to see the different ways the things that we can take for granted like being able apply for a job, and being able to travel, being able to provide for your family is something that in this system is hard to achieve. There are so many layers of those things happening all at once, just tracking with that person to see how they make it to the other side. It’s a system that’s put in place and they’re trying their best to manage what’s happening, but I feel like there’s ways for it to be improved and that’s what our movie is trying to shed light on. There is help, but also, it’s not the right type of help for some people. It just needs to be relooked, reshaped and allow people to leave the system to be a part of normal life. I feel like there’s such a big hold on people being able to continue their life after they’ve come through so much trauma, and they’re asking for help in a foreign place. They just want to step forward in life, and I feel like there is a section that keeps them behind, and I feel like that’s what our film’s trying to shed light on that.

MF: Can you talk about Aisha’s relationship with Conor and how that changes her life?

LW: I love their connection because it’s unexpected and I feel like Conor, his backstory is he’s come from the prison system and he’s trying to fix his life, and he sees something in her that she knows is there, but she’s just not in the right headspace to accept that love that he’s willing to give to her. I just think it’s a beautiful connection during the storm for her, and she’s trying to process how to navigate that, alongside her immigration matter that’s important to her.

Letitia Wright and Josh O'Connor in ''Aisha'.
(L to R) Letitia Wright and Josh O’Connor in ”Aisha’. Photo: BBC Film.

MF: What was it like working with Josh O’Connor and having him as a scene partner?

LW: It was easy. Josh is a great human being. He’s a great artist. He is great to work with, honestly. I have nothing to say, other than I really enjoyed his presence, and him being a great co-lead with me and just stepping back and allowing me to have what I need and reconnected when we needed to. He’s a very gentle and sincere artist. I really want to work with him again. He’s fantastic.

MF: Audiences are used to seeing you in big budget films like ‘Black Panther’ or ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ what was it like making a smaller, independent movie?

LW: Oh, very normal. It’s not a transition at all. I come from the independent world. I come from theater. Most of my CV is filled with that and TV as well, so I think if anything, it was a transition to be a part of a bigger franchise and world, and theater is where my first love is, in terms of getting to break apart stories in a unique way and a little bit more intimate, but I love both. I love independent theater. I love your big blockbusters that are great. When you get a great one, you love it, and I’m happy that I can navigate between the three.

MF: Finally, what was it like collaborating with director Frank Berry on set?

LW: I loved working with Frank. He is one of the most generous directors I’ve ever worked with. I’m very spoiled with the directors I’ve been able to work with, honestly. They’ve all been great. He’s sensitive. He listens. He’s in tune with what you’re feeling, and he just really allowed me to take ownership of this character. I one hundred percent think he’s one of my favorite directors. This process of making this project with him, I saw how he took it seriously to find out about the world he was telling, the research that went into it. I just really think Frank is one of a kind. He’s very special. I hope a lot of people get to work with him. He’s very picky about what he does, but I really hope that other actors can experience such a great soul being the leader of a project and collaborating with him. He’s great.

    Preview:

    • Zendaya, Mike Feist and Josh O’Connor were among the talent attending the ‘Challengers’ press conference.
    • Zendaya talked about how her dance background helped with her tennis training.
    • Director Luca Guadagnino outlined the lengths he went to for the movie’s final sequence.

Luca Guadagnino (‘Call Me by Your Name’, ‘Bones and All’) is a director known for his grasp of sensuality and complicated, grown-up stories of relationships. And his latest, ‘Challengers’ marries that sensitivity with the competitive world of tennis, where curdled personal and professional jealousy causes issues for one woman and the men who share an attraction to her –– at the cost of their own formerly deep friendship.

‘Challengers’ stars Zendaya (‘Dune: Part Two’) as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court.

Married to a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist, ‘West Side Story’), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (Josh O’Connor, ‘The Crown‘) –– his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.

As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself what it will cost to win.

The movie marks Guadagnino’s latest and potentially most mainstream crossover movie, with a script from relative newcomer Justin Kuritzkes and ‘Spider-Man’ veteran Amy Pascal among its producers.

Moviefone recently attended a virtual press conference for ‘Challengers.’ Taking part were stars Zendaya, Faist and O’Connor alongside director Guadagnino, producer Pascal and writer Kuritzkes.

Here are 10 things we learned from the press conference, edited for clarity and length.

    Related Article: Movie Review: ‘Challengers’

    1) Writer Justin Kuritzkes was Partly Inspired by a Particular Moment in Tennis

Writer Justin Kuritzkes attends the Los Angeles Premiere of Amazon MGM Studios’ 'Challengers' at Regency Village Theatre on April 16, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.
Writer Justin Kuritzkes attends the Los Angeles Premiere of Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘Challengers’ at Regency Village Theatre on April 16, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Stewart Cook/Getty Images for Amazon MGM Studios.

Kuritzkes says he wasn’t much of a sports fan before writing the script, but one moment during a televised tennis game gave him the initial kernel for ‘Challengers’, which hinges on a couple of dramatic games.

Justin Kuritzkes: I just happened to turn on the US Open and it was the final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. And there was this very controversial call from the umpire where he accused Serena Williams of receiving coaching from the sidelines. I had never heard of this rule, but Serena was saying, ‘That didn’t happen. I would never do that.’ Immediately this struck me as this intensely cinematic situation where you’re all alone on your side of the court and there’s this one other person in this massive tennis stadium who cares as much about what happens to you as you do, but you can’t talk to them. For whatever reason, it just clicked in my mind: What if you really needed to talk about something, and what if it was something beyond tennis? What if it was something that was going on with the two of you, and what if it involved the person on the other side of the net? How would you have that conversation and how could you communicate the tension of that situation using the tools that are specific to film? So yeah, that was really where it all started for me.

    2) Amy Pascal Wanted to Produce the Film Because it Was a Grown-Up Concept

Producer Amy Pascal attends the Los Angeles Premiere of Amazon MGM Studios’ 'Challengers' at Regency Village Theatre on April 16, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.
Producer Amy Pascal attends the Los Angeles Premiere of Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘Challengers’ at Regency Village Theatre on April 16, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Eric Charbonneau/Getty Images for Amazon MGM Studios.

Pascal was given the script by her producing partner Rachel O’Connor and knew it was something she wanted to shepherd to screens.

Amy Pascal: It is very rare that commercial movies are about adult relationships and about sex. I was sick of it, so I thought it was high time that people kiss in movies and more, and there was no better director to bring that to life than Luca.

    3) Pascal Convinced Kuritzkes to Let Her Option the Script with One Compelling Offer

Director Luca Guadagnino and producer Amy Pascal attend the Los Angeles Premiere of Amazon MGM Studios’ 'Challengers' at Regency Village Theatre on April 16, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

Pascal brings enough of a heavyweight reputation thanks to her years in the business, which you think might be enough for most people. But thanks to her history with the ‘Spider-Man’ movies, she also had a secret weapon…

Pascal: I think what really locked it, and I don’t think Zendaya knows this, but I’ll say it now, is we promised we’d get her to do it. I said, I know there’s a lot of other producers, but I know Z personally and I will get her to do this movie, and that is why Justin chose us, I’m certain.

    4) Luca Guadagnino Loved the Script –– But Had to be Cajoled to Read it at First

Director Luca Guadagnino attends the Los Angeles Premiere of Amazon MGM Studios’ 'Challengers' at Regency Village Theatre on April 16, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

Guadagnino said he’d wanted to work with Pascal for a while, so the script was a tempting one… Even if she had to keep at him to read it, since he was already busy on another film.

Luca Guadagnino: Amy and I, we have been courting each other for many years now. There is a sort of an unspoken love story between the two of us! But when Amy sent me the script I was working on something else, and she was calling me every half hour to ask me if I was reading it or not. Eventually I had to read it while working. The script was fantastic. The characters were amazing. The structure was so cinematic that I just immediately, instinctively felt that the company of Amy, the company of Zendaya and the company of Justin, the artistic endeavor that we could all gather together in this would be fantastic. So, I think I said I was in immediately.

    5) Zendaya was convinced to do the film after a table read

Zendaya is a busy actor, and obviously is offered a lot of scripts these days. So the producers decided to go an extra step to convince her to join ‘Challengers’.

Zendaya: We had a mock table read at my agent’s house and I just fell in love with the script. I mean, it was brilliant. It also made me very nervous as something to tackle because of, I think, how complicated these characters are. Also, I couldn’t define what kind of movie it was. It was funny. It was so funny, but I wouldn’t say it was a comedy. There was drama, but I wouldn’t say it was just a drama. It had tennis, but it wasn’t like a sports movie. So I think that feeling that it was just everything at once in this beautiful way was terrifying, but equally exhilarating and exciting.

    6) Mike Faist thought he’d blown his chance to appear in the film.

Faist, who broke out big in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of ‘West Side Story’ admits he needs prodding from his agents to read scripts. But he loved the ‘Challengers’ screenplay when it was sent to him to read at home in Ohio and immediately agreed to a Zoom meeting with Guadagnino, which led to a screen test.

Mike Faist: They flew me to London to meet with Zendaya, and we did a screen test there. I remember I left the screen test, and I was walking around London, and I actually felt like it went atrociously wrong. I thought, “Oh, okay. Well, I did not book that at all.” Then Luca gave me a call and he said, “Mike, where are you? Come back, have lunch with me.” We sat down and had lunch and we just chatted some more and got to know each other.

    7) Josh O’Connor initially worried he wasn’t up to the challenge of his role.

O’Connor, who plays strong-headed but down-on-his luck player Patrick Zweig, was concerned he didn’t have the chops to play such a complicated character, despite winning awards for playing ‘The Crown’s Prince Charles.

Josh O’ Connor: I’d read the script before. But then when Luca asked me about doing it initially, Patrick was, I thought, beyond my reach. I felt like this was a character that was so confident, so front-footed, so comfortable in himself, even though he has, as we all do, fears and insecurities. But really he completely lives life to the full and is very accepting of his flaws. All those things seemed like a reach and Luca very brilliantly accepted that and made me feel comfortable around that.

    8) Zendaya found one of her own skills helped her with learning to look like a tennis pro.

The actor recalls having trouble with the tennis training, and that even when she thought her skills had clicked in, she couldn’t remember them.

Z: I’d be, Yeah, I got this. Okay, and then you come in the next day, and you can’t recreate it and you’re, ‘Damn, back to square one.’ I once said, ‘I want to try to see what it feels like to return a serve. Someone hit me a real one.’ The way that thing flew by me so fast, and at the time I still had glasses, so I couldn’t even see the dang thing!

But she figured out that something she was already skilled at might help.

Z: At some point I realized, “Okay, my approach has to be different because whatever this is, isn’t working.” So I said, “Okay, well, let me approach it like choreography. I’m a dancer, so let me dance this thing out.”

    9) Faist and O’Connor developed a close bond before shooting and enjoy joking about their connection on and off screen.

It’s clear from hearing them talk about it that Faist and O’Connor are good friends. But that doesn’t stop them having fun at each other’s expense. Such as when they’re asked to define how they developed the toxic bromance between Art and Patrick in the movie and Faist answers: “Well, we hate each other.”

JOC: Mike does this joke sometimes and sometimes he follows it up with the punchline of, “Just kidding. We’re great friends.” But in the UK last week we did an interview where he committed so much to this joke that it sounded like I bullied him. It was extraordinary.

MF: Josh genuinely in the middle of the interview, was screaming at me, “Please tell them that you’re joking!”

    10) Luca Guadagnino and his team worked hard crafting the kinetic final tennis sequence.

The movie jumps back and forward in time, but hinges on one particular climactic match between Faist’s Art and O’Connor’s Patrick. Guadagnino and his team knew that would need a lot of preparation to make work on the different emotional and physical levels.

LG: We rehearsed the dramatic part of the movie many, many, many days. Then we were on the court every day, few hours watching the points, understanding how those sports action had to be reflective of the dynamic between the characters. We understood that the final sequence, the final moment, had to be basically a silent sequence or a non-dialogue sequence, that was going to be very clear to everyone in the audience, to understand the emotional ramp up that had to be built there. It took a long time in the conception, planning and shooting. I think that sequence, the last 10 minutes, took us eight days to shoot, more or less, which is incredible.

‘Challengers’ is in theaters on April 26th.

    Initial Thoughts

There have been justified complaints for quite some time now that adult-oriented films are hard to find in the mainstream marketplace. ‘Challengers’ could go a long way toward rectifying that. This three-hander from director Luca Guadagnino – known for sensual, voluptuous, emotion-charged efforts like ‘Call Me By Your Name’ – is an intense, erotically infused character study of three college tennis players and their 13-year journey both together and apart.

‘Challengers’ is not a particularly explicit film – save for one bracing scene of full-frontal male nudity in a locker room – but it is a highly sexual one, as desire hangs like a constantly threatening storm cloud over the lives of Tashi (Zendaya), Art (Mike Faist), and Patrick (Josh O’Connor). What makes this film so fascinating and irresistible is seeing how that physical desire overlaps with all three players’ emotional needs and differing levels of ambition to become champions. These are fully-fleshed out characters in a fleshy and sumptuous morality play, heighted by ravishing cinematography and a typically outstanding score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

    Story and Direction

‘Challengers’ doesn’t tell its tale in linear fashion, opening in 2019 and the flashing back 13, 12, and eight years (in addition to “the day before” at one point). When we first meet our three leads, it’s at a tiny little nothing tennis tournament – the Phil’s Tire Town Challenge – in New Rochelle, New York. Tashi and Art are married with a child and travel with an entourage that includes her mother, plus Art’s physical conditioning therapist and a security guard. Judging by where they stay and how they travel – not to mention the giant billboard we spot for a luxury car that features both — the couple are quite wealthy.

Patrick, on the other hand, pulls into town for the open and sleeps in his car when his credit card doesn’t work at the local fleabag motel. He’s hungry, unshaven, and smells. He appears to have zero money, counting on the nominal fee he’ll earn for just appearing at the tournament to get him through until he wins the championship money. It quickly becomes clear that Art is a wildly successful pro looking to find his game again – with the help of Tashi, who’s also his coach — before attempting to get back into the U.S. Open, while Patrick is perhaps an even better player who just hasn’t had the right breaks.

As the movie progresses, we skip back in time to find out how these three came together and eventually (sort of) split apart. Art and Patrick, we learn, have been bunkmates since they were 12 and have gone through tennis camps and academies together. They’re like brothers and perhaps a little more: when they first meet the beautiful, poised, sharp-beyond-her-years Tashi at a mixer for young players – who both are absolutely smitten by – they confess later to her in their hotel room that it was Patrick who taught Art the art of sexual self-gratification.

Tashi’s amusement at this and apparently instant understanding of the boys’ relationship – Patrick is more confident, outgoing, and even arrogant, while Art is reserved, shy, and lacks his pal’s confidence – allows her to easily bend the two to her will in that room, even if things don’t go quite as Art and Patrick initially fantasize. But it’s Patrick who ends up dating Tashi, and while all three remain friends, it’s clear that Art is secretly, painfully in love with her, while the relationship between Tashi and Patrick is more transactional in nature (“Are we talking about tennis?” he says at one point as they get hot and heavy in his room. “We’re always talking about tennis,” Tashi replies).

The blurred, constantly intersecting lines of their professional and personal lives – as both Tashi’s career and her relationship with Patrick come to an abrupt end, driving her into the willing arms of Art and cleaving the two young men’s bond in two – form the meat of the narrative in ‘Challengers,’ leading back to Phil’s Tire Town Challenge and why it’s so important for Art to beat his former friend once and for all. But all three know each other well enough to keep manipulating each other right up to the end, with their dysfunctional desires and ambitions fueling each of them in different ways.

Guadagnino, who spent a few years in the horror genre recently with his overripe ‘Suspiria’ remake and the underrated cannibal love story ‘Bones and All,’ has fashioned perhaps his best, most complete, and most accessible film to date here. Channeling the flavor of ‘Call Me By Your Name,’ he shoots his three leads and most of the movie’s action in stark, intimate fashion, relying largely on close-ups of their faces – the two men literally drip sweat onto the camera during the final set of their climactic match — and bodies, whether it be O’Connor’s hairy, muscular legs, Faist’s narrow, pale ones, or Zendaya’s sleek flanks. All three fill the screen impressively, drawing the viewer into their psyches often without saying a word.

But aside from the electricity and sense of nerve endings sparking to life that the leads generate in proximity to each other – especially during their initial hotel encounter — there’s an intense physicality to the movie overall. In one final sequence, the director and ace cinematographer Sayomphu Mukdiphrom somehow shoot the match from the perspective of the tennis ball itself as it frenetically spins through the air. This is backed impressively by Reznor and Ross’s pulsating score, which channels ‘80s dance music and heightens the subtle emotional intensity present under all the physical action.

    A Perfect Threesome

Zendaya has been impressive in just about all of her big-screen work to date (we’ve never watched ‘Euphoria’), but ‘Challengers’ provides her (thanks to Justin Kuritzkes’ detailed screenplay) with perhaps her best character to date. Enigmatic and alluring when we first meet her, Tashi stays that way even as the more complex nature of her character comes to the fore. Relentless as a player – she mows down her competition with the same ferocity that the actor’s Chani cut down Harkonnen soldiers in ‘Dune: Part Two’ – she is forced to pivot when her career comes to a shattering end. And pivot she does, making Art the avatar for her ambitions whether he wants to be or not.

Does Tashi love Art? It’s difficult to say. But it’s clear that she’s drawn more strongly to the reckless, cunning Patrick, even all these years later. It’s also clear that she sees right through both men, and the fact that they are each flawed in their own way allows her to exert control over them. Tashi doesn’t let anyone push her around or stand in her way – life’s too short, especially when you’re a young woman whose career goes out of your control – and she’ll do whatever she can to steer things her way.

Patrick, of course, is the wild card in all this, although even his outward appearance as a struggling tennis bum masks a different reality that Tashi reminds him about. A constant smirk tugging at his mouth and always threatening to turn into a sneer, Patrick refuses in many ways to grow up but also does his best not to play into Tashi’s games. Josh O’Connor, best known as Prince Charles on ‘The Crown,’ plays this entitled young American with just the right amount of curdled privilege.

Mike Faist stars as Art and Zendaya as Tashi in director Luca Guadagnino’s 'Challengers,' an Amazon MGM Studios film.

The third part of this triangle is Art, with Mike Faist following up his outstanding breakout in ‘West Side Story’ with another superb performance. Art has the talent, but doesn’t quite have the same drive as either Tashi or Patrick, and one gets the sense that he wants to focus on other things beside just hitting a ball back and forth on the court. Yet he is just as capable as manipulation as either one of them, even if he’s clumsier at it.

If ‘Challengers’ has a flaw, it’s that the rest of the characters more or less disappear into the background. We meet Tashi and Art’s daughter – who seems like an inconvenience more than anything else – and Tashi’s mother, but they’re barely in the mix. There are really just three people in this movie, but they’re enough to carry it for its (slightly overlong) running time.

    Final Thoughts

A crowd-pleaser, a sports movie, a romantic drama, and an arty character study all at the same time, ‘Challengers’ finds director Luca Guadagnino putting aside the more esoteric pretensions of his recent genre output while still making a movie that is intensely adult, sensual, and immersive. Justin Kuritzkes’ script, the insistent Reznor/Ross score, and the award-caliber work by his three leads all help make ‘Challengers’ a winner whether tennis is your game or not.

‘Challengers’ receives 9 out of 10 stars.
