    • Amazon MGM Studios made its presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘The Sheep Detectives’ and ‘Spaceballs: The New One’.
    • There was also a look at Michael B. Jordan’s ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’.

After making its first trip to CinemaCon last year, Amazon MGM Studios has certainly been enjoying a good year at the box office so far, largely thanks to the huge success of ‘Project Hail Mary’ (which, as announced at the panel, just crossed $525 million at the global box office, cementing it as the company’s biggest movie to date, and will see its theatrical window extended, Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!).

Hoping to keep the momentum rolling, the studio unveiled new looks at this year’s crop of movies and beyond including ‘The Sheep Detectives’ and ‘Masters of the Universe’. But if you were expecting a surprise announcement about casting for the new James Bond movie, there was none –– but VP of Film Courtenay Valenti did promise it’ll be worthy of the venerable franchise’s legacy.

First out of the gate (even though it isn’t out until next March) was newly minted Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan‘s remake of the 1968 caper movie –– previously re-imagined in 1999, which the actor is directing and starring in.

After a look at some fun footage, Jordan himself took the stage to talk up the fact that Jon Batiste is crafting the music for the movie. He also brought out co-star Adria Arjona, complimenting her “intensity, wit, and fire” while calling her “an incredible scene partner.” Their cat-and-mouse relationship (as art thief and the insurance investigator tracking him down) is at the core of the movie.

Kenneth Branagh, meanwhile, plays the antagonist, the person that Jordan’s Crown targets. Jordan says he made the movie for big screens.

Hoping for another big hit, Amazon MGM is putting a lot of weight behind ‘Masters of the Universe’, which adapts the 1980s toy line and cartoon series (and was already focus of a notoriously unsuccessful 1987 movie).

Stars Nicholas GalitzineCamila Mendes and director Travis Knight took the stage to introduce a new look at the film. Galitzine, of course, was hefting He-Man’s classic power sword, which is surely some sort of safety violation.

Some fresh footage from the movie –– which Knight and co. described as tackling how someone is challenged to step up beyond what they think they can do –– was screened after Galitzine had the audience lift the fake swords they received as he recited He-Man’s classic transformation line

The new scene shows Galitzine’s Prince Adam and Mendes’ Teena reuniting on Earth before they travel to Eternia to battle the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto), which in turn leads into the new trailer.

Another jump ahead in time for a quick look at footage from Jason Statham action sequel ‘The Beekeeper 2’. It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from The Stath, and should keep fans happy. Statham himself appeared via video to exclaim, “some people say less is more. I say more is more.”

Jackman himself arrived on stage (along with co-stars Nicholas Braun, and a returning Galitzine) to tout the film, which also boasts a considerable cast in both live-action (Emma Thompson) and voice (too many to list) form. It’s described as “a warm deeply human story about finding your place in the world.” And we got an extended look at the movie.

With confetti and chaos, the new movie from director David Leitch launched into a first look at a team of social media types who make videos about, well, how to rob banks.

Leitch came on stage with Pete Davidson, and Davidson revealed that this group of robbers livestreams their crimes and robberies. “They’re putting an end to greed and corruption one heist, and one video, at a time,” he said, before Rhenzy Feliz and Anna Sawai were confirmed to be the other two robbers. Leitch wanted to capture the energy of a manic YouTube video, before a video message from the rest of the cast played.

After years as a rumor and in development, the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel just hit Ridiculous Speed. Or at least, production speed, as shooting is now kicking off on the continuation of the space satire/farce co-created by Mel Brooks in 1987.

Brooks is back in the dual role of the nefarious President Skroob and wise sage Yogurt, while the likes of Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga are returning to their parts. Most surprisingly Rick Moranis –– who has been retired from on-screen work for years –– has been tempted back to play Vader-spoofing villain Dark Helmet.

    [Shortcode: cloS09s7a0JwesCtRhfAA1]

And via an announcement from Amazon MGM Studios, which is backing the new movie, we know that Anthony Carrigan (‘Barry’) is among the newer faces joining for this go-around (more on the others below).

What was the story of ‘Spaceballs’?

The original ‘Spaceballs’, directed by Brooks from a script he wrote with Thomas Meehan and Ronny Graham, starred Pullman as Lone Starr, a scruffy hero in the Han Solo mold who has to stop the nefarious President Skroob from stealing the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia.

Along the way, he comes to the aid of Vespa (Zuniga) and her sarcastic robot maid Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers). John Candy played Starr’s faithful half-man/half-dog sidekick Barf.

As for the new movie, it’s predictably wrapped in mystery, with the official logline going for a joke: “the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.”

And Brooks has previously described it thusly:

“A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Alongside the veteran cast (and now Carrigan), we can also expect to see Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and, keeping it in the family, ‘Thunderbolts*’ Lewis Pullman, son of Bill, playing Starburst, his on-screen spawn.

Who is making the new ‘Spaceballs’?

With Gad on board to star and produce, he’s also co-written the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who worked on ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’.

Josh Greenbaum, who made ‘Strays’ (for which Gad provided a voice) and ‘Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar’, is in the director’s chair. He feels like a good fit for a new ‘Spaceballs’, since he’s proved he can handle wacky comedy with some emotional undertones.

When will the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel be on screens?

While Amazon MGM Studios has yet to confirm an exact date, but it is aiming for a 2027 theatrical launch.

  • ‘Adulthood’ Interview: Director Alex Winter

Opening in select theaters on September 19th and On Digital September 23rd is the new dark comedy from actor turned director Alex Winter (‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’) called ‘Adulthood’.

    TosKZsqEZdikNHDvRm20n

The film stars Josh Gad (‘Frozen’), Kaya Scodelario (‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’), Billie Lourd (‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’), and Anthony Carrigan (‘Superman’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Alex Winter about his work on ‘Adulthood’, his first reaction to the screenplay and why he wanted to make the movie, balancing the right tone, the situation that brings the characters closer together, his casting process, and how being an actor informs the way he directs other actors.

MF: To begin with, Alex, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and why you wanted to direct this movie?

Alex Winter: I wanted to make something that was very cinematic but that I could make on a budget. So those were specific parameters that I was working with, and my producing partner, Russell Hollander, knew Michael Galvin, the writer, and knew of this script that was great in its bones but needed some work specific to the vision I had for what type of movie I wanted to make. So, I loved the essence of what Michael had, there was very good stuff in there. Then I came on board, and we started working on the script to drive it towards what it became. It was very much a commentary and a farcical in an entertaining way, hopefully, about the conundrum of modern life. The impossibility of modern adulthood and generational secrets and life. What it’s like to wake up to the fact that you are now officially an adult, and your parents are getting old, and life is not exactly what you thought it was going to be. They find a kind of proverbial skeleton in the closet, right? You realize there are things about the generation in front of you that are more complex than you had thought when you were a child. So, it’s obviously symbolic for the revelation of growing up and becoming an adult and confronting these things. Also, what the consequences are of that, right?

MF: Can you talk about the situation that the siblings in the movie find themselves in and how it changes them and brings them closer together?

AW: I wanted to make a film about family and about the relationships that we have with our families that can be, in some ways, distant and sometimes challenging and complicated. But the deep bond that underlies that and at the end of the day that we are inextricably entwined, regardless of those conflicts and challenges, which can be a good thing as well, as a difficult thing. But I also wanted to make a film where characters change substantially from the beginning to the end. So, I wanted actors that could really convey two sides of their personality in a very convincing way. Both Josh and Kaya are very good at that. I’ve seen that in their work in other projects. I knew that they could really sell what I would call the twist of the movie, which is that they both become different people about halfway through and then take over from there.

(L to R) Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario in 'Adulthood'. Photo: Petr Maur.
(L to R) Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario in ‘Adulthood’. Photo: Petr Maur.

MF: Can you talk about your casting process and finding actors like Josh Gad, Kaya Scodelario, Billie Lourd and Anthony Carrigan for this film?

AW: I got Josh signed on relatively early and was very supportive and helpful all the way through when I was putting the financing together and building the movie and getting it up on his feet and all of that. Then I was very enamored with Kaya’s work all throughout her career going back to ‘Skins’, frankly, and her work in Andrea Arnold‘s ‘Wuthering Heights’, which I just love. I knew of her, and I felt like she’d been untapped as a comedian because I’ve always found her funny when she’s doing roles that required her to be very funny and have a great sharp wit, but I also knew she could get very serious when it needed to happen. Once I was able to get the cast assembled and Billie Lourd came on, who’s just a genius, and sort of built to be a noir femme fatale. Then Anthony Carrigan, who’s a friend of mine and had been in ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ with me came on and we had this amazing ensemble cast. We just started working together in the lead up to the shoot, sometimes over Zoom, building chemistry and creating the report.

MF: Can you tell us more about your rehearsal process and is that something you try to do on all the movies you direct?

AW: I feel that in the modern industry, things have gotten very fast. I would say too fast. I think that what I really try to aim for is as much rehearsal time, as much time with the actors being together, and as much prep as humanly possible. You’re usually having to claw that out in various ways, and sometimes in informal ways. You’re off the clock. You’re meeting on Zoom at crazy hours. But you do it, and you get it done. It was very helpful here because by the time Josh and Kaya got to set, they had this amazing chemistry, just right out of the gate. But that didn’t come from nowhere. They’d been working together for a little bit.

(L to R) Josh Gad and director Alex Winter on the set of 'Adulthood'. Photo: Petr Maur.
(L to R) Josh Gad and director Alex Winter on the set of ‘Adulthood’. Photo: Petr Maur.

MF: Do you think that your experience as an actor informs the way you direct and work with actors on set? Do you think they naturally trust you more than other directors because you are also an actor?

AW: I find it extremely helpful. I know how I would like to be spoken to as an actor. I know what creates trust for myself as an actor and what breaks that trust. I said this to my cast, I really consider them partners and collaborators, and I want their opinions, I want their thoughts on theme and tone and things like that. I want to be able to process that with what I’m doing. I mean, it’s helped me, in innumerable ways, but largely, I just have a gut instinct for what, works for me as an actor and what helps me to prepare and know what’s going on. So, for example, on this film, we were shooting very quickly, and we’re shooting totally out of order like most movies do. The arc of the film was very specific emotionally, who they are can change radically from one scene to the next, based on consequences and circumstance. So, I literally created an emotional flow chart day by day or even hour by hour for these characters for those scenes. I just handed them to Josh and Kaya. I said, “You may want to stick this up in your dressing room if it’s helpful, because you’re going to be Noah as one type of person in the morning and then Noah is a completely different type of person in the afternoon. You may just get very scrambled on who you are and where you are. This may help guide you.” If I was an actor, I would find that very useful.

MF: Finally, can you talk about the challenges of balancing the movie’s comedic and dramatic tones?

AW: I mean, that’s the whole ball of wax on a movie like this. You live or die on balancing tone. What helped me greatly was that I’m an old school aficionado of Noir and have studied them very carefully. I think this movie, the work of Fritz Lang, the work of Hitchcock‘s early period, were things that I was studying closely. But keeping that balance working through with the DP, with the composer, with the sound designer, and obviously, most importantly, with the editor, was the most critical thing. Doing that with the actors is the whole thing, but, I mean, that was our shoot. All my work in post was on underscoring tone. Then I wanted people to laugh, so I wanted it to continue to be funny while things got hairy, you know?

Dr. Seuss’ ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ Photo: Amazon.

Written by prolific author Dr. Seuss –– AKA Theodor Seuss Geisel –– the original book was first published by Random House on January 22nd, 1990.

It was the last book to be published during Seuss’ lifetime.

The story, written in his usual rhyming form, begins with the narrator, relating the decision of the unnamed protagonist (who represents the reader) to leave town.

The protagonist travels through several geometrical and polychromatic landscapes and places, eventually encountering a place simply called “The Waiting Place,” which is ominously addressed as being a place where everyone is always waiting for something to happen.

As the protagonist continues to explore, spurred on by the thoughts of places he will visit and things he will discover, the book cheerfully concludes with an open ending.

The movie will reportedly focus on a young adventurer navigating the ups and downs of life.

What other Dr. Seuss books have been adapted?

Seuss is an author whose works have long been source fodder for TV shows, stage productions and more, including theme park experiences.

Some of his books have even been adapted more than once, including ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ (for the TV ‘toon, the 2000 live-action movie and the 2018 big screen animated iteration).

Other tomes to have been turned into shows or movies include ‘The Cat in the Hat,’ ‘Green Eggs and Ham,’ ‘The Lorax’ and ‘Horton Hears a Who!

    20000051

The same studio behind ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ also has ‘Thing One and Thing Two,’ presumably focused on the chaotic sidekicks to The Cat in the Hat character, in development.

And that’s not even counting all the various theatrical productions, live shows and even movies that put the author himself front and center, talking about his life or his political views.

It’s perhaps not surprising that so many productions have sprung from his work –– after all, that includes many of the most popular children’s books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death in 1991.

Grande, as mentioned, played Glinda in Chu’s successful movie adaptation of the ‘Wicked’ stage musical (and the Gregory Maguire novel from which the show was sourced). She received an Oscar nomination for the role and will be reprising it in the second half of the story, ‘Wicked: For Good’, also directed by Chu (since he shot them back to back).

‘Wicked: for Good’ will be in cinemas on November 21st. And Grande is not done with ‘Wicked,’ either, since she and co-star Cynthia Erivo will be part of a live concert special featuring music from the movies, which will be broadcast on NBC on November 6th.

Beyond that, Grande recently landed a part in the new ‘Meet the Parents’ movie, which is in pre-production.

Gad is best known for roles such as snowman Olaf in the ‘Frozen’ animated movie franchise and playing LeFou in the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ live-action film.

He was most recently heard in ‘Strays’ as Gus, and seen in TV comedy drama ‘Wolf Like Me’. Gad is developing a variety of projects at the moment, including a ‘Spaceballs’ sequel alongside Mel Brooks.

The actor will also return to two of his most familiar roles, including a third ‘Frozen’ entry in 2027 and ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’, in theaters the same year.

    • The addition of Lewis Pullman, Josh Gad, & Keke Palmer is also a brilliant move.

A ‘Spaceballs‘ sequel is in the works after nearly forty years and while that is exciting enough information on its own, the fact that much of the cast is returning is the icing on the cake.

    cloS09s7a0JwesCtRhfAA1

Unless ‘Spaceballs 2‘ were to follow a group of completely new characters (think ‘Star Wars‘ prequels or sequels), there is no way getting around replacing these actors. The film is so iconic that simply recasting would not only be a kick in the teeth to the actors (and the fans) but it would likely never capture the same satirical vibe that it needs to on order to be a success.

‘Spaceballs’ is a beloved film, a cult classic if you will, and needs to be treated as such. To bring in all new people, without any true ties to the original, would be a disgrace. The original cast members are not just perfect choices to play these characters, but the right choices to play them, as well.

No One Could Replace Rick Moranis As Dark Helmet

Rick Moranis is that actor who would be the hardest to replace and keep fans feeling as if Dark Helmet is the same character. It would be just like ‘Star Wars’ putting out a movie featuring Darth Vader and not using James Earl Jones‘ iconic voice. It would immediately feel like an impression, an imitation, and not the same thing.

This is the most surprising return for most, considering that he hasn’t acted in quite sometime. His last live-action role was ‘Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves‘, which release in 1997. After that he did lend his voice to several animated projects, but ultimately gave up acting more or less in 2008. It is a treat to have him return and quite honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The main cast are such iconic characters that it simply makes sense to have the actors who know them inside and out come back and reprise their roles. As long as they are willing and able, there truly is no reason to recast.

Mel Brooks and Daphne Zuniga Are Also, Thankfully, Returning

(L to R) Joan Rivers as the voice of Dot Matrix and Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa in 'Spaceballs'. Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Mel Brooks directed and starred in the original 1987 film. He is currently 98 years old, so his return for ‘Spaceballs 2’ as Yogurt is a bit shocking. That said, he can simply provide the voice via a recording booth if necessary, and have a stand-in actor if need be, due to the nature of the character. While fans would love to see him don the iconic gold makeup, that is simply not necessary with today’s technology. Of course, that would be ideal, but there are work arounds if they are needed.

Daphne Zuniga returning as Princess Vespa is no surprise to many as she has continued to act since ‘Spaceballs’. Knowing that Princess Vespa and Lone Starr marry at the end of the first film is the perfect lead-in to introducing their child, who will likely be the main focus of ‘Spaceballs 2’.

Sadly one of the most memorable characters, Barf, cannot be portrayed by the original actor, John Candy, as he has passed away. It is hard for fans of ‘Spaceballs’ to imagine a sequel without this particular character, so odds are Barf will either be recast, or one of his offsprings will join in the adventure. This is likely where Josh Gad steps in, because has the comedic chops to pull it off, although we do not yet know for sure.

Lewis Pullman Joining His Father, Bill Pullman, As His Son Is A Brilliant Casting Choice

Lewis Pullman coming in as Lone Starr’s son, which is fitting becauae his father, Bill Pullman, is reprising that role as well for ‘Spaceballs 2′. Having both Pullmans on screen is sure to be a joyful fans, but it will also make their moments together believable. As with Rick Moranis’ return as Dark Helmet, finding a replacement actor for Bill Pullman’s Lone Starr would prove to be incredibly difficult.

Bringing in Lewis Pullman is a brilliant move because not only is he the perfect person to carry on the Lone Starr legacy because of his father, he is also a great actor, which he has proven time and time again, most recently in ‘Thunderbolts*‘.

Keke Palmer also joins the ‘Spaceballs 2’ cast in an undisclosed role. Another comedic genuis who is sure to fit into this crazy Sci-Fi world perfectly.

Josh Gads Love For The Original ‘Spaceballs’ Is Reassuring

Josh Gad is leading the charge on ‘Spaceballs 2’, reportedly starring and producing. He also apparently wrote the sequel. Not only does he know his way around comedy, he is also a big fan of the original film. He has admitted to seeing ‘Spaceballs’ before even seeing ‘Star Wars’. Knowing that he is such a big fan himself should put minds at ease. Surely he would not agree to star in something that doss have the same vibe and feeling of the original, which he loves so much.

While not much is known about the story yet, ‘Spaceballs 2’ will clearly be set a long time after the events of ‘Spaceballs’. The actors have aged forty years, which is something you simply cannot avoid. Plus, with Lewis Pullman playing the adult son of Lone Starr, we know time must have passed. There are so many routes they can go, but with the original cast on board, fans will have high hopes that they can recreate magic.

Amazon MGM’s ‘Spaceballs 2’ is set to release in 2027. There is no confirmation yet as to if it will head to theaters yet, or release exclusively on Prime Video.

The Schwarz is still strong with Mel Brooks and his ‘Spaceballs’ cast.

Following on from the news a year ago that Brooks and Josh Gad were leading the development of a sequel to Brooks’ 1987 ‘Star Wars’ (and other sci-fi movies) comedy riff.

Amazon MGM Studios has announced that, as we perhaps might have predicted, Brooks will be back in front of the camera as well as behind it, playing the mystical, Yoda-spoofing Yogurt.

    [Shortcode: cloS09s7a0JwesCtRhfAA1]

Gad is on board to co-write and produce, and will likely be showing up on screen in some capacity.

And that’s not all: there has been a flurry of other casting stories, with Deadline bringing word that Bill Pullman is returning to play Lone Starr, while in even more surprising news, Rick Moranis will be back as the villainous Dark Helmet.

The Wrap, meanwhile, has a report that Daphne Zuniga plans to join her old ‘Spaceballs’ colleagues, playing Princess Vespa.

It’s not just veterans, either: Deadline’s report mentions that ‘One of Them Days’ star Keke Palmer is also aboard the movie, playing an unknown new role called Destiny.

Keeping it in the family, meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter has the story that Bill’s son Lewis Pullman, recently seen in ‘Thunderbolts,’ will join the cast to play a character named Starburst, the son of Lone Star and Vespa.

What was the story of ‘Spaceballs’?

Bill Pullman and Mel Brooks in 'Spaceballs'.
(L to R) Bill Pullman and Mel Brooks in ‘Spaceballs’. Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The original ‘Spaceballs’, directed by Brooks from a script he wrote with Thomas Meehan and Ronny Graham, starred Bill Pullman as the aforementioned Lone Starr, a scruffy hero in the Han Solo mold who has to stop the nefarious President Skroob (Brooks) from stealing the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia.

Along the way, he comes to the aid of Vespa (Zuniga) and her sarcastic robot maid Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers). John Candy plays Starr’s faithful half-man/half-dog sidekick Barf and Moranis is superb Vader spoof Dark Helmet.

Spaceballs’ doesn’t just target George Lucas’ work, however: there are also riffs on the likes of ‘Planet of the Apes’, ‘Star Trek’ and in one particularly memorable moment, ‘Alien’.

Though the movie didn’t exactly triumph at the box office (it ended up with $38.1 million worldwide) but has long since been considered a cult classic.

Plot details for the new film have yet to be revealed, but Deadline mentions that people who have not yet read the script describe it as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” Which if you ask us, sounds like the sort of line Mel Brooks would spin about the movie in order to get a laugh.

Who is making the new ‘Spaceballs’?

Director Josh Greenbaum with Reggie on the set of ‘Strays.’

Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment is also aboard, and he’ll producing alongside Brooks, Gad, Jeb Brody and Greenbaum, with Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez as executive producers.

Rick Moranis and George Wyner in 'Spaceballs'.
(L to R) Rick Moranis and George Wyner in ‘Spaceballs’. Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Moranis is perhaps the most shocking of the new announcements, since he’s barely been seen on screens for more than a decade and hasn’t come back for extensions of other franchises such as ‘Ghostbusters’.

Here’s what he told Heeb magazine back in 2013 about the stalled original plan for a ‘Spaceballs’ sequel:

“I wasn’t privy to what the budget was or anything, but the deal [Brooks] presented me, what he wanted me to do, was not workable. It was two or three years later. He wanted me to… it’s better if I don’t get into the particulars of it. Because it is so specific, it’s counterproductive to talk about it. But I was unable to make a deal, and it would have been something I would have wanted to do. But that ship has sailed.”

Looks like the ship has come back into the harbor!

When will the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel be on screens?

While Amazon MGM Studios has yet to confirm an exact date, Deadline mentions a planned 2027 theatrical launch.

    • Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride are back to lend their voices.
    • ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ will be out on January 29th, 2027.

After flinging two movies at theaters in 2016 and 2019, it appears that Sony is ready to let go of the ‘Angry Birds’ franchise.

While it has made more than half a billion dollars so far with ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ and ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2,’ the company is no longer in charge of the franchise, which adapts the popular Rovio video game titles.

Paramount Pictures has now announced that it will be distributing the movies going forward, and has set ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ for release in a couple of years.

    gehGLE36Ka2NrYTJdtQ8R7

It’s an interesting gamble, since ‘Angry Birds’ as a game doesn’t have quite the same cultural cachet as other titles –– its younger audience has moved on to others such as ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Fortnite.’

But as ‘Minecraft’ has just proved, video game movies can still do big business at the box office, and Paramount is clearly hoping that ‘Angry Birds’ will spawn the same sort of success as enjoyed by its own ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ franchise.

Just in case you’re not sure what we’re talking about…

What is the ‘Angry Birds’ franchise?

Jaakko Iisalo created the original game for Rovio Entertainment in 2009, which focuses on the titular flock of colorful angry birds who try to save their eggs from green-colored pigs.

Players look to take down the pigs and their structures by flinging the birds –– who have different destructive capabilities –– at the pigs via slingshots. Physics and comedy are intertwined in the games, which have grown into a series.

The original title also spawned a huge multimedia franchise of products and cartoons and SEGA acquired Rovio in 2023 (which might point to why Paramount is now involved, since SEGA also makes the ‘Sonic’ games and co-produces the movies).

‘The Angry Birds Movie’ featured the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage.

The film is focused on Red (Sudeikis), an outcast in an island of anthropomorphic flightless birds, as he suspects a newly arrived crew of pigs led by Leonard (Hader) of plotting an evil plan, and attempts to put a stop to them with the help of his newfound friends Chuck (Gad) and Bomb (McBride).

Sequel ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ saw newcomers Leslie Jones, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown and Eugenio Derbez joining the ensemble voice cast.

    skcANxPA

In the story, the birds are forced to team up with the pigs to stop Eagle Island’s leader from destroying both of their islands.

Sudeikis, Gad, Bloom and McBride are all back for the third, with newcomers this time including Emma Myers, Keke Palmer, Tim Robinson, Lily James, Marcello Hernandez, Walker Scobell, Sam Richardson, Anna Cathcart, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Nikki Glaser, James Austin Johnson and Psalm West.

Plot details have not been released, but we can guess it’ll feature more conflict between our feathered friends and either the pigs or some new threat.

The new movie will come from director John Rice (who worked on ‘The Angry Birds Movie’) and writer Thurop Van Orman, who contributed to the script for ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2.’

And composer Heitor Pereiram, who scored the last two movies, is also back for the new one.

As with any big release for a franchise film, especially with new owners, there was of course the statements of excitement from the producers and studio.

    Here’s producer John Cohen:

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Paramount Pictures and extremely proud of our incredible cast. Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Rachel and Danny returning to voice their fantastic characters, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of comedic talent. These are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re so thrilled to have them all on board.”

And this was the statement from Paramount president of worldwide marketing and distribution Marc Weinstock:

“Angry Birds transcends mediums and has been embraced and celebrated the world over. We couldn’t be happier to be partnering with SEGA/Rovio and these other great partners to bring this latest instalment, featuring an incredible voice cast, to big screens everywhere.”

This came from Flywheel Media boss Don McGregor:

“We’re thrilled to announce that our first theatrical distribution partnership is with Paramount Pictures. As a film production company focused on bringing the best family movies to global audiences, we couldn’t have a better start than ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3.’ ”

    Finally, here’s Rovio’s Alex Pelletier-Normand:

“The Angry Birds brand has demonstrated remarkable versatility, evolving from a global mobile gaming phenomenon to licensed products, animation, and a thriving cinematic franchise. It has been a deeply collaborative effort to create a film that will resonate with the millions who interact with our catalog of games and products every day. We are confident that with this talented team at the helm, ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ will delight longtime fans and create new fans in those discovering our flock for the first time.”

When will ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ be in theaters?

While Brooks would probably crack that it’s all happening now before it’s too late, another of his comedies is seeing a return –– this time, a sequel to 1987 ‘Star Wars’ spoof ‘Spaceballs’.

Josh Gad is now developing the new movie for Amazon/MGM (since MGM released the original and Amazon has been looking for ways to use the IP it inherited since buying the company), with Brooks involved as a producer and –– assuming he wants to –– once again stepping before cameras.

Hailed as one of the greatest comic actors of his generation and has a tragic story that seems ideally suited to biopic treatment.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1964, he graduated from Marquette University in 1986, with a double major in communications and theater. At Marquette, he played rugby union and discovered a love of comedy. Though he’d then go to work at the same oil company as his father, his love of performing never left him, and he began to study improv comedy.

That, in turn led him to legendary Chicago improv group Second City, where he started the same day as Stephen Colbert. From there, he was recruited by Lorne Michaels for ‘Saturday Night Live’.

He joined an all-time ensemble of ‘SNL’ greats including Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider and Norm Macdonald. From the start, Farley stood out with his amazing physical comedy, delivering iconic sketches like his ‘Van Down by the River’ performances as motivational speaker Matt Foley or trying out as a Chippendales dancer with Patrick Swayze that live in SNL lore.

His success on the show would translate over to the big screen, where Farley soon would join the A-list of ’90s comedians with such hit films as ‘Tommy Boy’, ‘Black Sheep’ and ‘Beverly Hills Ninja’.

But he also struggled with the addiction issues common to great comics: after being sober for three years, he would relapse and fall back in to drugs and alcohol, dying from an overdose in 1997 at 33. His death shocked the industry and his peers.

What will the biopic draw from?

  • Fourth ‘Frozen’ Movie in Development

    Preview:

    • Disney boss Bob Iger visited ‘Good Morning America’.
    • He revealed that two ‘Frozen’ stories are in development – the third and fourth.
    • The plots are a mystery for now.

Disney clearly still has warm feelings towards the residents of the magical land of Arendelle. Which is hardly surprising, since the first ‘Frozen’ made $1.3 billion at the box office and the sequel earned $1.4 billion.

And that’s before the huge amount of merchandise that has been sold, including books, toys and soundtracks. The likes of ‘Let it Go’ and ‘Into the Unknown’ have become reliable earworms and Disney is looking to build entire lands dedicated to the films in theme parks (Hong Kong Disneyland’s is opening in a few days).

So, no one was particularly surprised when company CEO Bob Iger hit morning show ‘Good Morning America’ to reveal that a fourth film is tentatively in the works.

    54291

What did Bob Iger say about ‘Frozen IV’?

Jennifer Garner, Robert Iger, and Oprah Winfrey at the Save the Children’s Centennial Awards.
(L to R) Jennifer Garner, Robert Iger, and Oprah Winfrey at the Save the Children’s Centennial Awards. Photo courtesy of The Walt Disney Company.

Here’s what Iger said on ‘GMA’:

“‘Frozen III’ is in the works, and there might be a ‘Frozen IV’ in the works too. But I don’t have much to say about those films right now. [Director] Jennifer Lee, who created the original ‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen 2,’ is hard at work with her team at Disney animation on not one but actually two stories.”

And given that this comes from the boss of the whole company, you’ve got to consider it a good source.

The news was also seemingly confirmed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who alongside writing partner/husband Robert Lopez, was responsible for the monster hit songs from the first two movies.

She hit social media to add her own comment:

    The ‘Frozen’ story so far

Idina Menzel as Elsa in 'Frozen.'
Idina Menzel as Elsa in ‘Frozen.’ Photo: Disney.

(Very) loosely inspired by the fairy tale ‘The Snow Queen’, ‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen II’ introduced the world to sisters Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel).

The royal pair lose their parents at an early age (Disney up to its usual storytelling tricks) and Elsa also has magical snow powers she initially wants to suppress. But when she’s forced to assume the throne, the pressure leads her to unleash her abilities, plunging Arendelle into deep winter.

Anna has to try and get through to her, forging an alliance with ice-cutting mountain man Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and chatty snowman Olaf (Josh Gad), while also fending off the attentions of the scheming Hans (Santino Fontana).

It all ends well, but in the sequel, Elsa is confronting a new mystery –– a call to a wooded area of the land where fresh secrets are revealed.

The story for either of the potential two new movies has yet to be revealed though Disney has released a podcast called ‘Forces of Nature’ that continues the adventures after the events of ‘Frozen II’.
