    • Walt Disney Studios made its presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ and ‘The Dog Stars’.
    • And, of course, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

Once the all-conquering ruler of the box office, Disney has seen its fortunes take a tumble in the last couple of years, with the likes of Marvel and Pixar movies suffering issues at the box office.

Still, the Mouse House still has quite the line up, with the likes of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as big hope points.

Pixar, meanwhile, has a new ‘Toy Story’ offering, and ‘Star Wars’ is back on the big screen. Plus ‘Moana’ is getting the live-action treatment. Let’s see what the company chooses to spotlight…

Before the lights went down, attendees were given a ‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ popcorn bag and a ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’-branded diet coke.

The typical studio sizzle reel kicked things off, with plenty of Disney highlights and wrapping with riffs on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ –– the countdown clock that has been part of the promos so far counting down to zero and the caption “Disney will return to CinemaCon.”

There is, of course, a little boasting to de done about last year’s success stories, including a joke about renaming ‘Zootopia 2’ to “Zootopia $1.9 billion”.

With the comedy sequel just a couple of weeks away from release, there wasn’t too much on it, just a quick video message from Anne Hathaway: “20 years later, we are back!” She also thanked theater owners for their support.

But did also cue up some new footage from the movie. Three words: Miranda. Priestly. Zingers.

Surely one of the biggest titles (outside of the MCU) to be showcased here is the return of ‘Star Wars’ to the big screen.

Writer/director Jon Favreau arrived on stage to remark how the opening shot of the original ‘Star Wars’ changed the path of his life, and how there will be plenty of IMAX footage in the new movie. Not to mention a fresh score from composer Ludwig Göransson.

Favreau announced the final trailer for the movie (which you can see above) and also showed the opening sequence, which includes an AT-AT in the snow before we watch Mando (Pedro Pascal) get his next bounty hunting gig.

If you’re wondering whether ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ got a mention, the answer is yes –– but only in picture form, and nothing we haven’t seen before.

We went from the galaxy far, far away to the Pixar universe, via some ‘Toy Story 5’ footage. This time around, Woody (who has been off helping rescue other toys) and Buzz, along with their friends, must confront a new toy in Bonnie’s life –– a tech gadget called Lily Pad (voiced by Greta Lee).

Tim Allen (Buzz) and Tom Hanks (Woody) strode on stage to talk about their latest animated effort. The pair exchanged light banter, made fun of working off of a teleprompter and gave plenty of love to the Pixar team. They also introduced a new clip from the movie, featuring their characters reuniting.

Next up is Disney’s ongoing effort to convert all of their animated output to live-action movies. ‘Moana’, which was a huge success in cartoon form back in 2016, is back with a mostly new cast, though retained Dwayne Johnson as Maui.

He was on stage to discuss the film and gush about how much Maui means to him and how his performance was inspired by his grandfather. Johnson was joined by Catherine Laga’aia, who plays Moana, and she revealed that she’d done her very first interview for the movie today.

And, as is standard, we got some new footage from the movie.

Next up from the House of Mouse, an original – Ridley Scott‘s latest, ‘The Dog Stars’ Sir Rid himself appeared (on screen) to introduce the post-apocalyptic story, which stars Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin.

It’s set after the world’s population has been ravaged by a pandemic, and follows Elordi’s Hig, who lives a lonesome existence in a Colorado airplane hangar with his dog and a dour gunman (Brolin) he has befriended. When a mysterious transmission comes through on the radio while he’s flying his old Cessna, it sparks a hunt for the provenance of the sound.

Scott brought the audience first new trailer for the movie, which you can find above, and an early scene.

    ‘Whalefall’

We’re clearly in the “originals” section (okay, both ‘The Dog Stars’ and this are adapted from novels), as ‘Whalefall’ was next.

The movie follows a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places. Oh, and like Ridley Scott’s movie, this also features Josh Brolin.

‘Whalefall’ comes from director Brian Duffield, who previously brought us ‘No One Will Save You’. And the first look at the movie finds the main character, played by Austin Abrams, getting drawn into the mouth of the whale.

Of course Marvel was going to wrap things up with what Disney is hoping will be one of, if not the biggest film of the year. No pressure, then…

Marvel boss Kevin Feige arrived on stage to discuss ‘Doomsday’ and introduce something called ‘Infinity Vision’ which will enhance the viewing experience (read more about that here). He also mentioned that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ will be back in theaters ahead of the new movie.

Feige was joined by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who talked about how Doctor Doom (played in the new movie, of course, by Robert Downey Jr.) is the best Marvel villain because he’s always three steps ahead.

And then it was the turn of the man himself (RDJ, not Doom), on stage to announce he wants to give away all the spoilers, but isn’t permitted (and anyway, that’s Tom Holland‘s job).

A first proper trailer for ‘Doomsday’ played (lots of X-Men) action, and Chris Evans appeared on stage to admit he was only going to return to the MCU for a good reason (no jokes about dump trucks full of money, please). There was a mock argument between RDJ and Evans about their characters.

The trailer played a second time, and let’s just say this… there was screaming in the audience.

And with that, Disney’s out! Which also marks the end of the studio presentations. Hope you enjoyed our coverage!

In theaters on limited release from November 26 before heading to Netflix on December 12 is ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,’ the third in director Rian Johnson’s compelling mystery movie series.

    R0AjYvLafG2Cfqpt5hXR84

Back as usual is Daniel Craig (‘Knives Out’), once more playing smart detective Benoit Blanc, joined by a new ensemble that includes Josh O’Connor (‘Challengers’), Josh Brolin (‘No Country for Old Men’), Glenn Close (‘Fatal Attraction’), Andrew Scott (‘All of Us Strangers’), Cailee Spaeny (‘Alien: Romulus’), Kerry Washington (‘Ray’) and Jeremy Renner (‘The Hurt Locker’).

Writer/director Rian Johnson breathed fresh, sharply-written life into the mystery genre with 2019’s ‘Knives Out.’ And if ‘Glass Onion’ in 2022 was a seemingly lesser (if still entertaining) follow-up, it’s relief to report that third outing ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ has much more in common –– especially in terms of quality character work and central crime –– with the first movie.

Johnson had always intended to make more movies featuring quirky, charismatic sleuth Benoit Blanc and a healthy deal from Netflix means we now have the third.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is a considerable step up from the second film, rivalling the original for how it weaves and then unravels its mystery. Part of the advantage is keeping Craig’s Blanc out of the story initially to give the other characters time to breathe. He still gets plenty of superb moments, but the ensemble as a whole has the space it needs to work.

Johnson has also made a beautiful-looking film, using the gloomy upstate New York setting (albeit filmed in the UK) to really enhance the storytelling.

Craig is a natural as Blanc at this point, and the faith-wrangling storyline really gives him something to chew on. But praise also to Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Thomas Haden Church and Glenn Close in particular, who are all fantastic.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is certainly one of the best mystery movies to be released in the last couple of years, and happily stands alongside the first movie while nodding to its inspirations.

In theaters on November 14 from Paramount Pictures is ‘The Running Man,’ co-writer/director Edgar Wright’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel.

The movie stars Glen Powell (‘Top Gun: Maverick’), Josh Brolin (‘Avengers: Endgame’), Colman Domingo (‘Sing Sing’), Lee Pace (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’), Emilia Jones (‘CODA’), William H. Macy (‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’) and Katy O’Brian (‘Love Lies Bleeding’).

(L to R) Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo star in Paramount Pictures’ ‘The Running Man.’

‘The Running Man’ is not necessarily the movie you might expect director Edgar Wright to make; he’s brought his own zippy visual style to genre comedies set in the horror, cop and alien invasion world, but has also plowed his own lane with the likes of ‘Last Night in Soho.’

Still, he does everything he can to liven up a fairly –– yet not completely straightforward studio wannabe blockbuster.

    Script and Direction

Director Edgar Wright on the set of Paramount Pictures' 'The Running Man,' starring Glen Powell.
Director Edgar Wright on the set of Paramount Pictures’ ‘The Running Man,’ starring Glen Powell.

Wright, working alongside Michael Bacall (with whom he adapted the box office flop-turned-cult favorite ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’) here sets his sights on Stephen King’s darkly dystopian tale of a working man trying to help his family by entering America’s most dangerous game show.

In places, it’s almost surprising that Paramount, with its recent, shall we say, political moves, is still putting this one out, since it takes the prescient King book as its basis and mostly smartly updates it for our trying times.

There is a problem inherent in movies such as this which the new ‘Running Man’ (let’s not forget there was a much looser adaptation in the 1980s starring Arnold Schwarzenegger) in that it is tempted to batter you over the head with its message as much as possible. Wright and Bacall don’t entirely escape that particular sinkhole, but they do at least inject plenty of dark humor in to the screenplay.

And as a director, Wright has always been a dynamic craftsman –– while he tones things down here from the days of ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ there is plenty of his flare on display.

    Cast and Performances

Glen Powell stars in Paramount Pictures' 'The Running Man'.
Glen Powell stars in Paramount Pictures’ ‘The Running Man’.

Glen Powell is really the only person who gets much screentime, and he’s a charismatic central figure who can get across the burning anger of his character.

But on the supporting front, the likes of William H. Macy, Colman Domingo and particularly the director’s ‘Scott Pilgrim’ star Michael Cera have fun in different types of roles.

    Final Thoughts

Colman Domingo stars in Paramount Pictures' 'The Running Man'.
Colman Domingo stars in Paramount Pictures’ ‘The Running Man’.

‘The Running Man’ certainly delivers on the action side of things, and some of its satirical message really hits home. It’s just a problem that it goes on too long with diminishing returns and ultimately wimps out (no spoilers) on King’s big finish.

‘The Running Man’ receives 70 out of 100.

    • It’ll mark the directorial debut of Second Unit specialist and stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood.
    • The producers of ‘John Wick’ are backing this one.

The genre of “seemingly downtrodden/ordinary guy reveals badass side to himself” has become a busy one of late, with the likes of Bob Odenkirk and Ke Huy Quan proving to be more than able to throw a punch or six.

And while we’re not sure that ‘Weapons’ star Josh Brolin exactly falls into the category of “unexpected” kick-ass hero (he always seems like he can handle himself –– he took on the Avengers!), he’s now aboard a new action-comedy called ‘Mister’.

In the director’s chair for this one is Wade Eastwood –– no relation to the growling acting/directing legend, he’s actually an accomplished stuntman, stunt coordinator and second-unit director now making the leap to the main chair –– and filming is scheduled to kick off in Spain early next year.

Written by Nicki Cortese and Nick Inglis, ‘Mister’ follows a man (Brolin) who wakes up in a strange house covered in blood and comes to realize his true identity while fighting off contract killers from his past — including everyone from his exes to his best friend.

To get out, he teams up with his estranged daughter who also has ended up in the family business, but they will need to repair their relationship in order to survive.

Here’s what Eastwood told Deadline about his choice of lead:

“Having the opportunity to collaborate with Josh is everything I could have hoped for. His presence and gravitas define ‘Mister’ and bring the film to life in every way. What excites me most about this project is the depth of the characters and complexity of their relationships, which allows me to build action around story, without ever losing the intensity the genre demands.”

Production companies Bright White Light and ‘John Wick’ team Thunder Road are shepherding this one.

Where else can we see Josh Brolin?

Brolin, who as previously mentioned was seen in this summer’s horror hit ‘Weapons’, will be back on our screens in ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’, due on December 12th.

Before that is the new take on ‘The Running Man’, which stars Glen Powell and will be sprinting into theaters on November 14th.

Next year brings post-apocalyptic thriller ‘The Dog Stars’ and scuba adventure ‘Whalefall’.

When will ‘Mister’ be in theaters?

Without a distributor aboard yet, we can’t predict when it’ll score a release date. But we would expect it to be snapped up soon.

‘Weapons’ receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters August 8 is ‘Weapons,’ written and directed by Zach Cregger and starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, Cary Christopher, and Amy Madigan.

We’ll admit we weren’t major fans of writer-director Zach Cregger’s feature debut, ‘Barbarian.’ While we appreciated its opening act and the film’s overall unpredictability, we were left dissatisfied by some uneven acting and a sense that it was two stories stapled together. Cregger’s second feature, ‘Weapons,’ is a whole different scenario. Once again Cregger experiments with narrative structure and tonal shifts, and while he occasionally loses his balance, he brings his various plot strands and character arcs together in a much more cohesive fashion while maintaining a better mix of dread and macabre humor.

This makes ‘Weapons’ one of the best horror outings of 2025 to date – not too shabby in a year that’s already seen the release of excellent genre fare like ‘Sinners’ and ‘Together.’ ‘Weapons’ may not have as much of the social commentary of those films, but it’s a frightening, gripping tale that still – in the tradition of authors like Stephen King – has something to say about small town paranoia and the mistreatment of children.

If you’ve seen any of the trailers for ‘Weapons,’ you know the premise: one night at exactly 2:17 a.m., 17 children from a third-grade class in the town of Maybrook all wake up in their homes and run off into the night, never to be seen again. A month later, law enforcement, school officials, and parents – led by the grief-stricken Archer Graff (Josh Brolin) — have no clues about what happened; only one child from the class, Alex (Cary Christopher), remains, while the town’s suspicions fall mainly on the class teacher, Justine Gandy (Julia Garner).

All that essentially happens in the first 10 minutes of the movie, with some of it narrated by a child who hints at the bizarre nature of the events to follow. And bizarre they are: ‘Weapons’ is the kind of movie that it’s better to see with as little foreknowledge as possible about what’s to come, and the film takes off in some unexpected directions from its initial setup before coming full circle.

Cregger relates this through a series of interlocking stories for each of his main characters – including Justine, Archer, a town cop and former lover of Justine’s named Paul (Alden Ehrenreich), a local homeless junkie named James (Austin Abrams), school principal Marcus (Benedict Wong), and Alex himself. Every story overlaps to some degree with the others, although told from the point of view of whatever character it’s focused on, and they all dovetail in the film’s third act. While this creates a bit of a repetitive rhythm as the movie goes on, each character’s tale varies enough from the others and reveals a bit more each time of the mystery at the movie’s center, keeping one transfixed as the horrific picture becomes clearer.

Cregger handles this looping structure extremely well for the most part, while also balancing a nicely expanding sense of dread and terror with moments of truly morbid humor that spring organically from the increasingly ghoulish situations he concocts. That tightrope act goes a little off the rails in the third act, as the violence escalates rapidly and some of the finale veers a touch too far into unintentionally comedic terrain – but not enough to dilute what’s come before. There are also a few plot holes along the way if one looks hard enough – but again, not enough to stop this from being an absorbing, scary trip.

Some of the film’s key sequences provide genuinely terrifying payoffs to the atmosphere that Cregger patiently builds in slow-burn fashion, aided by Larkin Seiple’s moody cinematography and an excellent, wide-ranging score by Ryan and Hays Holladay as well as Cregger himself. For most of its 128 minutes, ‘Weapons’ is a tightly-woven tapestry of horror that doesn’t over-explain itself and retains a singular filmmaking vision.

    Cast and Performances

‘Weapons’ is the definition of an ensemble piece, with excellent performances from all involved. Julia Garner seems much more confident and well-cast here than she was in her previous horror outing, ‘Wolf Man,’ as Justine, the teacher with just enough of a murky past that her clear love for her students is used as a – dare we say – weapon against her. Josh Brolin is also reliably outstanding as Archer, the actor using the innate tension between his gruff, tough guy façade and empathetic interior to create a fundamentally decent human being who is pushed to his limit by the loss of his son.

The underrated Alden Ehrenreich uses his chameleonic skills well as the equally vulnerable Paul, while Austin Abrams and Benedict Wong offer some of the film’s more humorous moments. And Cary Christopher is heartbreaking as Alex, the little boy suddenly left alone by nearly everyone in his life. Each of these characters gets more development than is often usual in horror films, which only adds to the viewer’s investment when all are placed in peril. And there’s one other performance about which we’ll say little – except that it’s thoroughly chilling.

    Final Thoughts

While the horror genre itself is not having as dependable a year as usual at the box office (sorry, Blumhouse), Warner Bros. Pictures is bucking that trend: following the surprising ‘Final Destination Bloodlines’ and the transcendent ‘Sinners,’ this is the studio’s third creatively successful fright fest in a row.

What makes it even more gratifying is that this is a wholly original and personal piece. The menace at the heart of ‘Weapons’ is one that other films have touched on before, but not quite in a scenario and setting like this. In that sense, ‘Weapons’ and ‘Barbarian’ do share common ground – the idea that evil can spring from the most unexpected places at random moments, albeit after festering out of sight for years. It’s a worldview and an approach that Zach Cregger is, pardon the expression, weaponizing to create some of the most interesting work in the genre right now.

Director Rian Johnson appeared to tease the third of his ‘Knives Out’ series of mysteries and walked on to the stage accompanied by a “Who done it” type mystery theme.

“I love a good surprise. This is the third Benoit Blanc movie that we’ve made and one thing that we strove to do with each one of them is to keep the audience guessing. It’s important for us to figure out new ways every time so just when you think you have it figured out, a new twist comes a long that you were not expecting. That’s what makes these movies special.”

Then, each member of the cast including Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, Kerry Washington and Jeremy Renner, came out one by one to one-up the previous co-star. Washington appeared with a T-shirt gun to entice the crowd, but not to be outdone, Renner then appeared with two T-shirt guns and received an extremely warn welcome from the fans.

The two Academy Award winners then took the stage along with fellow cast members Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.

Affleck had this to say about the movie:

“It’s great to be back together again on screen and we loved making this movie. It channels some of our all-time favorites like ‘Heat’ and ‘Training Day’.

In the film, Affleck and Damon play Miami cops who discover over 20 million dollars in cash hidden in a suspect’s house, which leads to distrust among their characters and the other police officers.

A new trailer for the film was shown to the audience at the Forum and during the broadcast but is not currently available online. Damon introduced the teaser trailer by saying:

“Netflix was not going to let us show you an exclusive first look at the film. In fact, the studio hasn’t even approved its release, so here is the first and I repeat only look at ‘The Rip’ coming to Netflix on January 16th, 2026.”

Next up was visionary director Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ presentation, which began with a video message from actor Jacob Elordi who plays the monster.

“I recently had the great pleasure of playing the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’. Guillermo is a real-life genius and I’m immensely grateful to be in the film. I’m proud of the work we all put into it.”

Guillermo del Toro himself, as well as actors Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth then took the stage to greet the fans and introduce the teaser trailer for the film.

“Thank you. I’m Guillermo del Toro. This is for me the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost a religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system. There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films, ‘Cronos’, ‘Blade’, ‘Hellboy’, big time on ‘Pinocchio’, and a long, long, etc. Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stories again and again. I wanted to make this film even before I had a camera, and I have actively been pursuing it now for 25 years. It has grown so close to me that now it is my biography. Now, tonight here, finally, we can share it with you.”

The stage was then set up like a sports broadcast with Rich Eisen interviewing Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and of course, Adam Sandler. Several supporting cast members including Jon Lovitz and an actor dressed as Abraham Lincoln were in the audience and asked clearly scripted questions.

After that, Sandler had this to say before introducing the final trailer for the sequel.

“First of all, Mr. Lincoln, great job on everything. Netflix, thanks for everything. How about today? This was fun. I’m hoping we have a lot of these. Now I have a question for all you nice people out there. Would anyone like to see the trailer for our new film?”

    • Disney and Marvel have shifted the release dates for the next two ‘Avengers’ movies.
    • ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ are moving from their May slots to December premieres.
    • Dates for ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ and ‘The Dog Stars’ were also confirmed.

Turns out, making two giant ‘Avengers’ movies back to back is going to take a little longer than originally thought.

Disney and Marvel have announced that the next two team-up films from the comic book behemoth are now set to arrive a little later in theaters than originally planned –– ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is shifting from a planned May 5th, 2026 slot to December 18th, 2026.

Likewise, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will now decamp from a May 5th, 2027 release date to –– you guessed it! –– December 18th that year.

Clearly, directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have decided the new movies will require some more work than they figured. Which honestly, is no bad thing –– better to wait and get it right in the hopes of an ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’-level success, than pump out something quickly.

The sprawling cast for at least the first movie (we’re expecting several to appear in both) was first announced in a viral video Marvel put online showing director’s chairs with the actor’s names on them.

    So who can we expect?

On the longstanding MCU front, we have Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man (whose chair is amusingly smaller than the others), Letitia Wright as Shuri, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent (from ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ who also appeared in ‘Thunderbolts*’), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (the main character of ‘Thunderbolts*’), David Harbour (introduced as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in ‘Black Widow’ and who recurred in ‘Thunderbolts*’). Also from both ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’, Hannah John Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, while Lewis Pullman, introduced as “Bob” (the character we now know as Sentry), is part of the new cast.

Alongside Wright, ‘Black Panther’s Winston Duke will be back as M’Baku, and Tom Hiddleston will also return as Loki.

Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi, a character who really has deserved a sequel before now. And Danny Ramirez, who was introduced as Joaquim Torres in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and reprised the role in February’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will show up as the new Falcon.

On the recent addition front, there’s Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal from ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ which will introduce the iconic team to the MCU on July 25th.

Any surprises? We’re not sure we predicted Tenoch Huerta Mejia –– who played Namor in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ coming back, but his chair was among the others.

Finally, there’s the even more unexpected likes of Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast in Fox Marvel movies ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ and cropped up in a cameo as the character in ‘The Marvels,’ is also on the list.

And talking of the original Fox X-Men line-up, he’s not alone, as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden were also announced.

Channing Tatum as Gambit in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'. Photo: Marvel Studios.

Likewise, Channing Tatum, who made such an impact in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will be back as Gambit.

Finally, because you can’t really have ‘Doomsday’ without Doom, Robert Downey Jr. is making his big MCU return, this time playing classic ‘Fantastic Four’ villain Doctor Doom.

We’re sure more cast will be announced before ‘Doomsday’ arrives, but Disney has more time to get the message out.

Joe and Anthony Russo on their return

    (L to R) Joe Russo and Anthony Russo at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.
    (L to R) Joe Russo and Anthony Russo at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Anthony revealed that what lured them to return:

“We’re very close with Kevin [Feige] and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon a [‘Secret Wars’] idea that activated all of us, you couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”

And that creative spark extended to regular collaborator Stephen McFeely, who is also back writing the new movies.

While other co-writer Christopher Markus is so far sticking with the Russos’ AGBO company to keep it running, McFeely was tempted back into the MCU machine.

    Here’s what Joe told Empire:

“There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story. I remember calling Steve and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’ He was like, ‘F*** no. Absolutely not.’ And then he hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 he called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea…’ ”

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars’?

Secret Wars’ would draw from (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) a pair of 1980s comic book series focused on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.

In a 2015 revival by Jonathan Hickman, the resulting conflict left the multiverse collapsed, the survivors living on a single planet ruled by classic villain Doctor Doom.

The Russos have previously talked about their enthusiasm for ‘Secret Wars,’ so this one made sense.

What other movie release dates were announced?

The place holders for February 13th, 2026, November 6th, 2026, and November 5, 2027, have all been removed from Disney’s calendar, pointing towards the result of Marvel’s commitment to quality over quantity.

It wasn’t all Marvel changes –– Disney also confirmed the dates for some of the movies headed our way via its 20th Century Studios, including Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller ‘The Dog Stars,’ starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin. That one will be released on March 27th, 2026.

Then there is sequel ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ which will see the return of Meryl Streep‘s imperious magazine editor Miranda Priestly as she navigates the challenges of the declining print industry. The comedy drama sequel is due on May 1st, 2026.

Finally, the company has scheduled an IMAX/3D re-release of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ which is set for October 3rd this year, laying the groundwork for the upcoming ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ on December 19th.

    Preview:

    • Paramount offered news on some of its upcoming movies at its CinemaCon Presentation.
    • ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ and ‘The Running Man’ were among those hyped.
    • Surprisingly little was said about ‘Scream 7’ and a few other big titles.

Paramount had a very mixed 2024. Though the likes of ‘Gladiator II,’ ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ and ‘Smile 2’ did decent business, the studio also had its share of disappointments –– despite a compelling subject matter in musician Robbie Williams (albeit one unfamiliar to many in the States) and the intriguing choice to portray him entirely as a CGI ape, ‘Better Man’ became a domestic flop.

The studio is also dealing with being in flux in terms of management, with Skydance merger battling its way to closure.

More importantly, 2025 is ‘Mission’ critical, and by that, we mean ‘Mission: Impossible –– The Final Reckoning,’ which needs to reassure theater chain owners that the franchise can get back to its glory days after the disappointing returns for 2023’s ‘Dead Reckoning.’

Not to mention that this is potentially the actual final ‘Mission: Impossible,’ at least starring Tom Cruise in his ongoing collaboration with writer/director Christopher McQuarrie. The big question: would the company announce that this really is the last chapter in a saga that began back in the 1990s (at least in movie terms), as a way to goose interest? Or would it confidently confirm that, like James Bond, Ethan Hunt would return?

Either way, the CinemaCon presentation was likely to feature Tom Cruise in some fashion –– be it on stage, or on video clinging to a plane, train or automobile (or building).

Or even, possibly just on screen holding his breath underwater during the entire panel, simply to prove he can.

Other predications for movies to be covered? The new ‘Naked Gun,’ with Liam Neeson playing the son of Leslie Nielsen’s iconic bumbling cop Frank Drebin, a new Rihanna-voiced ‘Smurfs’ outing and Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Running Man’ are all fair shouts, alongside –– looking even further forward –– ‘Scream 7.’

And now, on with the show…

Stunts are often something studios like to roll out, so Paramount kicked off with Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution riding a motorcycle on stage. He rode off to be replaced by three other riders, who did jumps off ramps and flips, all with smoke and explosions. Aronson was back to announce, “that’s right, I do my own stunts!”

He also talked up the company’s efforts to make 2025 a rebound year after the strikes and pledged to show fewer ads and trailers in theaters (phew!), plus other deals such as discount Wednesdays and extended matinee hours.

Following a sizzle reel of Paramount Pictures past and future, Brian Robbins, president and CEO took the stage to announce big news… Four ‘Paw Patrol’ movies for each pup to compete with Sony’s Beatles movies. He was joking of course. Or was he???!!

(L to R) Callum Shoniker as “Rocky,” Christian Corrao as “Marshall,” Luxton Handspiker as “Rubble,” Nylan Parthipan as “Zuma,” Christian Convery as “Chase,” McKenna Grace as “Skye,” Marsai Martin as “Liberty,” Alan Kim as “Nano,” Finn Lee-Epp as “Ryder,” North West as “Mini,” and Brice Gonzalez as “Tot" in 'Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie' from Spin Master Entertainment, Nickelodeon Movies, and Paramount Pictures.

Robbins also said that the studio’s guiding principle is shareholder… Sorry, that people love going to the movies.

Then, it was on to talking about movies in production for 2026, including ‘Children of Blood and Bone’, directed Gina Prince-Bythewood, who co-wrote the screenplay with novelist Tomi Adeyemi, which stars Amandla Stenberg, Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch and Idris Elba. Also mentioned? ‘Scream 7,’ ‘Sonic 4’ ‘Heart of the Beast, which stars Brad Pitt and directed by David Ayer, and the recently-delayed Kendrick Lamar movie crafted by ‘South Park‘ duo Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

    But back to 2025…

    The Running Man

Co-writer/director Edgar Wright was on stage to tout the Glen Powell-starring new version of the dystopian King story where civilians compete in deadly games to win cash prizes.

‘The Running Man,’ is per Wright is “the kind of movie that gives everyone something to cheer for.” He explained that since the source novel is set in 2025, so is the movie.

And talking of cheering, he was joined by star Powell on stage.

    Powell said:

“This is the full meal. What Edgar has cooked up with this one is nothing short of extraordinary,”

The actor joked that he asked pal and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ boss Tom Cruise for advice on using a stunt double –– and has paid the price for doing so much himself.

If that wasn’t enough star wattage, Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin joined the party.

“We knew we were part of something really special,” gushed Domingo, while Brolin admitted it was a thrill to play a wonderfully maniacal character.

Despite the movie having wrapped three short weeks ago, Domingo (dropping into character as show host Bobby Thompson) was able to cue up some footage, and a first look played.

In an extended trailer, Brolin’s executive character recruits Glen for show to protect his family. Lots of action. We see him in show and then being chased.

‘The Running Man’ sprints into theaters on November 7th.

From there, it was on to animation, with word on ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,’ (which has Jennifer Hudson in a voice role, ‘Aang: The Last Airbender,’ featuring Dave Bautista and Steven Yeung, and a ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem’ sequel with Jeff Rowe back as director and Seth Rogen again producing.

But all that was prelude to…

    Smurfs

The latest take on the little blue creatures features, as previously mentioned, Rihanna (who touted the movie in a video introduction) as the voice of Smurfette, in the story of Papa Smurf being kidnapped and the others having to find him.

In addition to the music megastar, the cast is loaded, with Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman all aboard.

The first trailer for the new animated/live-action outing was shown, showing how our diminutive heroes travel to the real world in search of Papa and encounter Ken, his brother (Offerman).

‘Smurfs’ will smurf its way into theaters on July 18th.

    Next?

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants

The latest SpongeBob film had voice star Tom Kenny on stage to talk up the movie, (he called it a “coming of age” story), joined by fellow performer Mark Hamill. Cue the ‘Corvette Summer’ jokes!

Hamill –– who plays the Flying Dutchman –– made the crowd laugh by saying,

“I did an episode in Season Five and I did such a good job they asked me back 18 years later!”

We got a first look at the film itself. Like ‘Smurfs,’ (and some other SpongeBob outings) it blends animation with live action, and features Clancy Brown as Blackbeard. The story finds out hero wanting to grow up and embrace his macho side by having more adventures –– including to the underworld.

‘The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants’ will sail into theaters on December 19th.

    We moved on to…

    The Naked Gun

The new reboot of the classic comedy franchise –– spawned, let’s not forget from the files of ‘Police Squad’ is a Seth MacFarlane-produced take on the idea with Liam Neeson and Paul Walter Hauser among the cast.

‘Naked Gun’s presentation kicked off with a saxophone player on stage pumping out noir-y music as Chris Aronson stood silently on stage, while a recorded voice-over played over the speakers as if his internal monologue was happening in real time.

    Best line?

“This musician sounds expensive, but this is Vegas, you have to pay for good sax…”

The teaser was shown, which you can find here:

    LmkEkE9t

It’s a funny clip, introducing Neeson’s badass Frank Jr taking out bank robbers, only slightly undercut by being dressed as a Catholic schoolgirl complete with panties. Bonus points for a fun final gag featuring a wall of tributes to dead cops, crying sons honoring their fathers and possibly the best way to incorporate OJ Simpson (who played Nordberg in the original).

‘The Naked Gun’ stumbles on to screens on August 1st.

From there it was time for…

    Roofman

The new movie from Derek Cianfrance stars Channing Tatum, who was on stage to hype it up.

He cued the first trailer for the movie, a biopic of the fugitive Jeffrey Manchester, a former United States Army Reserve officer, known colloquially as “Roofman” due to his propensity to steal from branches of McDonald’s after entering their premises via the roof, and, after he was jailed and got out evaded further capture from police by hiding in the wall of a Toys ‘R’ Us store.

The cast also includes Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn, Peter Dinklage, LaKeith Stanfield and Uzo Aduba.

‘Roofman’ steals into cinemas on October 3rd.

    And for the big finish…

    Mission: Impossible –The Final Reckoning

Paramount’s Robbins returned to the stage to introduce the one, the only Tom Cruise, who got a rapturous reception.

Instead of launching into promotion, Cruise took a moment to memorialize friend and ‘Top Gun’ co-star Val Kilmer, who recently died.

“I can’t tell you how much I respected his work and to have him in ‘Top Gun’ and back for ‘Maverick.’ Thank you, Val. I wish you well on your next journey.”

From there, he enthused about ‘Mission’ writer/director Chris McQuarrie, with Cruise mentioning how long they’ve been collaborating (on the Ethan Hunt movies and beyond). He even joked that people think “McQ” (as Tom calls him) is Jonathan Lipnicki from ‘Jerry Maguire’ all grown up!

Cruise went on to talk about how the ‘Mission’ movies are a puzzle and a Rubik’s Cube made under intense pressure, living breathing things where endless discoveries are made in the process.

They also discussed how Cruise brought McQuarrie in to rewrite scenes in ‘Ghost Protocol’ but didn’t tell Brad Bird or the rest of cast. Brad and Simon Pegg said on set, “who is this guy?” Tom replied, “That’s McQ”. Apparently McQuarrie came up with the “Blue is glue, red is dead” stunt scene on the spot in Dubai.

There was also time for Cruise to add that he’s looking forward to seeing ‘F1’ and his recollections of racing go-karts against friend Brad Pitt (who stars in that movie) while making ‘Interview with the Vampire’ together.

Switching tracks back to ‘Mission,’ Cruise stressed the challenges and importance of shooting in the pandemic, keeping crews working and the industry going.

“We were able to deliver these movies to theaters despite being shut down by pandemic and two strikes.”

Cruise then introduced McQuarrie himself, who strode on stage and quipped:

“Tom knows I can’t stand compliments, he’s enjoying this immensely…”

He’ll have to suffer more, as he’s receiving the Director of the Year award at the CinemaCon awards later.

He offers that he was ready to quit the business, but Cruise saw potential in him.

Cruise: “I’m here today because if your vision and trust.”

    And for McQ’s side:

“It’s been fun to work with you and put you in harm’s way for everyone’s pleasure.”

The new ‘Mission’ movie contains some of the most complex practical sequences on celluloid –– not that that should be surprising from these two.

Admitting that they’d be nowhere without audiences, Cruise introduced the new ‘Final Reckoning’ trailer, but not before name-checking every writer and director who has worked on the franchise so far, plus the executive likes of Sherry Lansing, Sumner Redstone and Paula Wagner too.

Then, it was time for the trailer itself, which sometimes felt like an expanded version of the teaser that arrived last year.

Lots of Ethan Hunt action (of course!) with Tom leaping off and onto things, plus a look at some newer cast members including Nick Offerman and Janet McTeer. It also serves as a love-letter to the whole franchise.

Indeed, the ‘Mission’ portion of the presentation felt like that too –– while no one said directly it’s the end, this felt pretty final. Until they announce the next one, that is…

‘Mission: Impossible –– The Final Reckoning’ speeds into cinemas on May 23rd.

And talking of finality, there ended the Paramount CinemaCon 2025 presentation!
