On Prime Video on January 28 is ‘The Wrecking Crew’ a new buddy action comedy led by Jason Momoa (‘Aquaman’) and Dave Bautista (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’), who here play estranged brothers brought back together by the death of their grungy private eye father.

Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto (‘Blue Beetle’), the cast for the movie also includes Morena Baccarin (‘Deadpool’), Jacob Batalon (‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’), Frankie Adams (‘The Expanse’), Temuera Morrison (‘The Book of Boba Fett’), Claes Bang (‘The Square’) and Stephen Root (‘Office Space’).

Projects dreamed up by actors who really want to work together can run the risk of becoming bloated vanity projects. Yet ‘The Wrecking Crew,’ spawned from an idea by leads Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa, manages to avoid most of those traps by being exactly what you might expect.

Front-loaded with action and powered by the charisma of its main men, ‘The Wrecking Crew’ harbors no illusions as to what it is –– dumb, fun and full of chaos.

Writer Jonathan Tropper (‘This is Where I Leave You’), is more normally known for his cinematic work alongside Shawn Levy, but while his movies have been more emotional and spiritual, his TV work, especially ‘Banshee’ has more of a connection to this film.

The style here is adrenaline-fueled action comedy with a healthy dollop of comedy to leaven our heroes slaughtering squads of henchmen as they investigate their father’s suspicious death.

Though you could probably guess the entire plot before the credits have finished, it’s entirely disposable and not the selling point.

Director Ángel Manuel Soto keeps things light and nimble, and if it ends up a little overstuffed for such a slim premise, it doesn’t suffer.

This really is the Bautista and Momoa show, the pair sharing some crackling chemistry as long-estranged brothers –– one a taciturn Navy SEAL who prefers to go by the book, the other a maverick cop with a penchant for leather jackets and throwing empty beer bottles.

They really do pull this thing along on their shared shoulders, but the likes of Jacob Batalon, Stephen Root and Morena Baccarin all get decent material to work.

It’s often vulgar, violent and has a storyline you could note on a napkin, but ‘The Wrecking Crew’ also has throwback charm and action bedlam that adds up to decent entertainment value.

With the official news out there, we now have a proper, if basic bit of detail for the movie. It’s described as “a standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’. It is an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.”

Gosling is playing a character that must protect a young charge (Gray) against evil pursuers. Adams will be the boy’s mother.

Smith will be hunting Gosling down and Goth will be on the villain’s scheming side. The other roles are unknown for now.

Jonathan Tropper, who collaborated with Levy on films such as ‘This is Where I Leave You’ and ‘The Adam Project,’ has been working on a script for over a year. Levy is also producing the feature via his 21 Laps banner, joining ‘Star Wars’ steward Kathleen Kennedy.

Levy offered the following statement to mark the start of production work on the movie:

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible ‘Star Wars’ galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. ‘Star Wars’ shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

When will ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ be in theaters?

‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ is now due to arrive on May 28th, 2027. May the force be with it…

Now, according to Deadline, Matt Smith, currently to be found appearing in ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series ‘House of the Dragon’, will join the cast as the main villain.

The casting makes sense, since ‘Star Wars’ has often employed Brits as villainous characters, all the way back to the likes of Peter Cushing’s iconic, scowling, contemptuous Grand Moff Tarkin in the 1977 original.

Favreau and Filoni introduced a new clip from the movie and a sizzle reel at the Celebration event.

The main scene was action packed, with Snowtroopers inside an AT-AT preparing to engage in battle. Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian cuts open into the hull of the AT-AT, then, in one continuous take, blasts, stabs, pyros, and fights his way through the Snowtroopers, making his way through the hull and then hallway, ending at the door of the cockpit, which quickly closes.

The sizzle reel, meanwhile, offered a glimpse at Sigourney Weaver’s character –– for whom Mando apparently works –– plus battle scenes (including an AT-AT tumbling off a snowy cliff), Grogu using his powers and swimming. It ended with Jeremy Allen White-voiced Rotta the Hutt, the son of the crime lord Jabba the Hutt, raising his hands in triumph in some sort of fighting arena, and then cut to Grogu in the stands and eating what passes for the Star Wars version of popcorn.

‘Mandalorian’ co-creator and fellow steward Filoni is still putting the pieces together for his own film, while one that continues the story of Rey (Daisy Ridley) is in development from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy but appears to keep hitting stumbling blocks and has been removed from the schedule for now.

And then there’s James Mangold’s film, which explores the origins of the Jedi and early force users and is awaiting a release date.

We’d guess that while Filoni (who promoted earlier this year to Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm) is still going full speed ahead on his movie, he’s also been busy figuring out a second season of ‘Ahsoka.’

Here’s what he said about that:

“I’m so well into that as well… I’ve been writing it, and I’m still the single writer on it, and so I’ve been enjoying doing that, but it’s a challenge, of course, and working some of these arcs through has been a challenge and making sure it’s all going to come out in a way that I think is exciting for fans. I know that they’re interested in where some of the things I developed in Season One. I’m pretty happy with it… Love working with Rosario [Dawson], so I can’t wait to get back to that.”

Beyond those, there are several movies (and potential trilogies) which don’t seem to be moving forward and may have been scrapped altogether, including new potential movies from ‘The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson (who is busy with his ‘Knives Out’ movies and may not wish to dip back into the toxic stew of ‘Star Wars’ fandom after the divisive reaction to his first effort) and ‘Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins, who had a much-touted ‘Rogue Squadron’ story of rebel pilots that appears to have had trouble leaving the development hanger.

‘Your Friends & Neighbors receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Arriving on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes on April 11th followed by one weekly, ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’ sees Jon Hamm blending comedy and drama for a series about a hedge fund manager whose life has taken a real downward swing, and who turns to breaking into his rich neighbors’ mansions in order to maintain his lifestyle.

The new show also stars Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, Hoon Lee, Mark Tallman, Lena Hall, Aimee Carrero and Eunice Bae.

There have been many shows about the dark underbellies of wealthy neighborhoods, where despite the well-manicured lawns and seemingly perfect mansions, the locale is a hotbed of affairs, crimes and gossip.

Trouble is, to stand out from the crowd, ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’ really needed to find a truly fun new angle from which to explore it, and on the evidence of the first season, it’s not totally clear that it succeeded.

Given that Hamm made his name playing another less-than-satisfied symbol of affluent machismo with an edge in ‘Mad Men’s Don Draper, it’s not hard to see why he might be attracted to the different shades of Andrew “Coop” Cooper here.

    Script and Direction

(L to R) Amanda Peet as Mel Cooper and Olivia Munn as Samantha Leavitt in 'Your Friends & Neighbors.' Photo: Apple TV+.

Jonathan Tropper, who made his name as a novelist and has been forging quite the cinematic career through work alongside Shawn Levy in particular (he adapted his own novel into ‘This is Where I Leave You’ that the director made in 2014 and wrote ‘The Adam Project,’ the filmmaker’s second successful collaboration with star Ryan Reynolds), and also previously created ‘Banshee’ and ‘Warrior’ for Cinemax.

Here, his back in original TV territory, even if the story of how a wealthy, entitled and slightly smug individual sees some real push back in his life doesn’t really strike you as the most innovative of concepts.

Still, with a well-used format such as this, it’s the execution that counts, and Tropper, along with his writing team, has fashioned something that mostly manages to stick the landing, at least in terms of its main character. Coop is a complicated man, far more than he first appears, and the showrunner has found a more than able talent in Jon Hamm to bring him to life.

Around him, the other characters are a little less fulfilling, but several of them work, including his troubled younger sibling Allison ‘Ali’ Cooper (Lena Hall), and Olivia Munn, doing stalwart work as Samantha Levitt, the unsatisfied housewife in the midst of a difficult divorce to whom Coop has turned for sex and fun since his own marriage collapsed.

The largely smart scripting is sometimes let down by an early over-reliance on voice-over, which despite Hamm’s ability to deliver it smoothly does dip into cliché territory from time to time. How many lectures do we really need, for example, on the shady background to status symbols such as diamonds?

On the directorial front, Tropper has found some experienced collaborators including Craig Gillespie (who is a fellow showrunner here), Greg Yaitanes and Stephanie Laing, who along with Tropper (who handles one episode himself), bring the requisite style and zip to the show, while letting the more emotional sides sit.

Pacing can sometimes be an issue, but the show in general works on a creative level, even if the balance of satire and mystery doesn’t always sit smoothly on the scale.

Jon Hamm has long proved he can handle both drama and comedy, and here he has the chance to blend them. For the most part, he runs with the opportunity, bringing both a brio and world-weariness to the main character of Coop.

He’s our way into this story, a man who is facing the slings and arrows of misfortune after his wealthy lifestyle and marriage crumbles around him, giving him a new viewpoint on life. And a yen for breaking and entering. Coop’s a fine character to follow, one with depth and perception about those around him, and while he’s not always the most likeable person, Hamm’s natural charisma still peeks through.

As his ex-wife Mel, Amanda Peet is somewhat saddled with the sassy-yet-sympathetic role of the former spouse who has moved on, but still has some affection for her former partner (and shares kids with him). Peet has had better roles, yet Mel’s effective in her own way.

Olivia Munn has more of an active role as Samantha, with whom Coop has been having an affair for a while. She brings a spiky, darkly funny energy to the role.

Elsewhere, Lena Hall brings nuance to Coop’s sister Ali, whose mental health struggles bring her back into her life, but also enjoys her own plotline instead of simply being another aspect of his. And there’s a memorable turn from Aimee Carrero as Elena Benavides, a housekeeper who becomes Coop’s partner in crime.

    Final Thoughts

It doesn’t always overcome the strictures of its genre, and it does sometimes attempt to coast on Hamm’s natural talent, but ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’ makes for a decent enough entry into the Wealthy Suburban Dark Secrets genre.

Apple clearly has enough confidence in it to order a second season before the first has finished putting out episodes (in fact, the order came before it launched), so we can expect this one to hang around the TV neighborhood for a while.

What’s the plot of ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’?

After being fired in disgrace, Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Jon Hamm), a hedge fund manager still grappling with his recent divorce, resorts to stealing from his neighbors’ homes in the exceedingly affluent Westmont Village.

But as he finds some treasures among their possessions, Coop also discovers that the secrets and affairs hidden behind those wealthy facades might be more dangerous than he ever imagined.

Having seen his most recent movie –– DC superhero origin story ‘Blue Beetle’ –– open top of the box office this weekend (with the proviso that it was a relatively soft $25.4 million, less than Warner Bros. was hoping for), director Ángel Manuel Soto has another potential job on the horizon.

According to The Wrap, he’s adding to his To Do list: Soto is now attached to direct buddy action comedy ‘The Wrecking Crew’ for MGM.

While the title has been used before –– cinematically for a Dean Martin-starring Matt Helm movie and a documentary about the legendary group of 1960s session musicians, while there is a Marvel comic with the name –– this is, in fact, the movie that Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa set up back in 2021.

The two actors, who are friends in real life, decided to figure out a movie to work together on.

Bautista put the idea out into the world as a tweet in August of 2021.

The concept has snowballed since then; MGM snapped up the chance to make the movie after a bidding war and it has since been handed to ‘Warrior’ and ‘Banshee’ TV series creator Jonathan Tropper (who wrote ‘The Adam Project’ for Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy) to turn into a script. Jeffrey Fierson, who worked with Momoa on the Netflix series ‘Frontier,’ will produce.

So far, neither MGM nor the potential stars have revealed anything about the plot for this one –– Momoa and Bautista had hoped for something along the lines of ‘Lethal Weapon’.

Perhaps (and this is only our speculation) it’ll focus on a pair of cops who are notoriously destructive in their missions, hence the name. That’s something we can see the pair doing well.

Soto, of course, isn’t David Leitch as the original tweet suggested, but he’s certainly proved he can bring fun and style to the movies he makes, including ‘Beetle’ and his previous effort, ‘Charm City Kings’.

And while no one can work on the movie just yet because of the writers and actors’ strike (Tropper’s script was completed before the Writers Guild of America started its industrial action back in May), Soto has proved to be a director in demand.

In addition to this new potential assignment, he is also attached to work on a new ‘Transformers’ spin-off for Paramount. Soto has been developing that alongside ‘Daredevil’ (Netflix era) writer Marco Ramirez.

Few details are available on that movie, aside from the fact that it won’t be a main franchise entry for ‘Transformers’ but will instead serve as a spin-off focusing on a different story and characters within the robots-in-disguise universe.

We’ll have to wait and see whether either of these movies actually ends up hitting screens, but ‘The Wrecking Crew’ (which had been previously untitled) certainly appears to have taken a positive step forward.
