Directed by Chris Columbus (‘Home Alone’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’), the film stars an all-star cast that includes Oscar winner Helen Mirren (‘The Queen’), Pierce Brosnan (‘Die Another Day’), Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley (‘Gandhi’), Celia Imrie (‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’), David Tennant (‘Doctor Who’), Jonathan Pryce (‘The Two Popes’), Naomi Ackie (‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’), Tom Ellis (‘Lucifer’), and Richard E. Grant (‘Saltburn).

Moviefone: To begin with, Helen, had you read the novel before you read the script, and what excited you about playing Elizabeth Best on screen?

Helen Mirren: Well, I had read the book. I’ read the book at least a year before, and thought, “Oh, my goodness, this would make a great movie.” I did feel that when I read the book. Immediately on the heels of that, I thought, “I’m the right person to play Elizabeth. I’m right. If there is a role in this for me, I think that’s my role.” But you have no idea what’s going to happen, and then I heard that Steven Spielberg had bought the rights to the script. Which on the one hand, was great news because we knew then the movie was going to be in wonderful hands. But at the same time, I thought, “Oh, my God, well, that means I’ll never get the role, because some much bigger movie star, than me will play it.” So, I was very pleased when they did approach me and I said yes, immediately, without any question. Then I don’t know if I read the script before that. I think maybe I hadn’t even read the script. I can’t remember. But possibly not. So, it didn’t come from the script for me. It came from the book.

MF: Pierce, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and why did you want to be a part of this project?

Pierce Brosnan: I wanted to be part of it because this is a beloved book, Ron Ritchie is a great character. It’s always good to be a surprise. Chris Columbus, you know, I played in his movies, ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ and ‘Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief’. The company of Sir Ben, Dame Helen, Celia, and it was a glorious summer, just the most magnificent time with this company of actors. You’re dealing with a great nuanced story of characters who are aging, who are dealing with the challenges of life, and who are alive and passionate about what they do. They solve cold cases and then ultimately a murder, right on their doorstep.

MF: Helen, what was your experience like working with director Chris Columbus for the first time?

HM: We all fell in love with Chris Columbus. But I would add, absolute encouragement and joyfulness, but also incredible expertise. We knew we were in the hands of an experienced filmmaker, who understood what was needed when he hadn’t got it yet, he went on until he did have it, but in the most encouraging ways. You never felt like you were failing but that you could trust him because he knew.

MF: Pierce, as you mentioned, you’ve worked with Chris Columbus before, so what was it like to reunite with him on this film and has his process as a filmmaker changed since the last time you worked together?

PB: I think we just picked up where we left off, on ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ and ‘Percy Jackson’. He’s a pal, and he’s such a great filmmaker. He knows where to put the camera, he knows how to tell the story, so when you walk in front of the camera, you feel like you’re on stage and your preparation, your homework, your study, and the words that you have to say, have a meaning and have a power. Then there’s also the great surprise element of your fellow actors, and being beside Ben and him playing Ibrahim Arif, we became a duo, and I didn’t really see that or think that when I was studying the script of preparing the work. It evolved just because of the positioning of the two of us by Chris, where you put your characters or how you find the blocking in a scene is very important. It can speak volumes, the way you move or the way you stand.

MF: Finally, Helen, what was it like for you to work with this incredible cast of actors, and is it fun making a movie with your friends?

HM: Oh, I mean, it could be a disaster making a movie with your friends. You know, it could be, because maybe you’ll get too cozy together and you’re not sufficiently objective about what you’re doing. There is a danger there. But I have to say with this group, who are absolutely friends, Ben, I knew when I was in my early 20s. Celia, I worked with it seems to me a few years ago, but she tells me it was 20 years ago. Pierce, I knew. But you never really know how the chemistry will come together at work. I think Ben puts it very well, he says, “We’re like a quartet and we each bring our individual instruments, that we each play very well and together those instruments make music.” So, we’ve all been trying to decide which instrument we play, we haven’t quite settled on that yet. But we do make good music.

“Cozy Crime” is a genre appellation that some storytellers bristle at, invoking images of basic British TV detective series featuring quirkily named old folk digging into crimes in bucolic countryside landscapes. But when fully embraced and exploited for full entertainment value, it’s one that pays dividends.

And, on the face of it, ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ could feel like it slots right alongside those sorts of shows –– you could even imagine it airing as a series on Sunday nights on the BBC. Yet this is a big-budget, star-driven movie that has even more to offer.

    Script and Direction

Osman’s book launched a successful series of books and a healthy reading audience, so naturally there was pressure from the start to get the adaptation right. Fortunately, screenwriters Katy Brand (‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’) and Suzanne Heathcote (‘Killing Eve’) nail the tone and the basics while making any necessary changes as the story shifts mediums.

The mystery itself is solid and intriguing, and while you might be able to guess some of the elements, it doesn’t spoil the enjoyment.

In reality, it’s the characters you end up rooting for, and the screenplay features more than enough wittiness and charm to make them work on the page, even before considering the quality cast attached.

Chris Columbus certainly has experience bringing beloved British books to screens, and with ‘Thursday Murder Club’ he largely keeps things balanced and stays out of the way of the plot. Aside from some stylish flashbacks to another case, and some great tricks to keep you guessing on the crime front, the movie unfolds without fuss.

It’s not every murder mystery that can boast the talents of Academy Award-winning actors, and this one really makes the most of its cast.

Helen Mirren is the perfect Elizabeth, a former MI6 operative who can’t shake her investigative training even if she is now living in a retirement home. Imperious, impatient and occasionally impolite (though usually only when she’s frustrated with others), Elizabeth also has a vulnerable streak, not least when dealing with her husband Stephen (a superb Jonathan Pryce), who is struggling with creeping dementia.

Pierce Brosnan, meanwhile, gets to show off his comedy chops along with his trademark gruff charisma as Ron, a trade union leader who is a key member of the club.

Also on the team is retired psychologist Ibrahim, played by Ben Kingsley, who applies his training to figuring out motives and schemes. It’s a welcome change of gear for the actor, who puts in an appealingly nervy, quiet performance.

Celia Imrie’s former nurse Joyce is the new recruit, brought aboard for her medical background and willingness to go along with Elizabeth and co’s ideas –– even when they conflict with local law enforcement.

Around the core cast, a solid group of British character actors adds flavor and spice to the story, including the likes of Ackie (who is a friendly police constable) and David Tennant (as a loathsome property developer whose latest deal threatens the sanctity of the Club’s Cooper’s Chase retirement home.

Others include Daniel Mays as DCI Chris Hudson, endlessly confounded by our heroes’ meddling and Tom Ellis, who is Ron’s son Jason, a famous fighter sidelined by injury who has found fame on TV.

‘The Thursday Murder Club’ is an effective, well-crafted example of the murder mystery genre, one that celebrates its source material while also making smart decisions about turning the story into a movie.

Chances are the film will have you hoping for a spin-off series, but with a batch of books in Osman’s novel series, we may have to settle for more movies.

But if any further movies can keep up the blend of crafty mystery and genuine emotion on display here, it’ll be a good day for Cozy Crime in general.

‘The Thursday Murder Club’ receives a score of 85 out of 100.

    • The first look at Netflix’s crime novel adaptation ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ has landed.
    • Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley lead the cast.
    • The movie hits Netflix on 28th August.

We’ve known for around a year now that Netflix and Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the popular ‘Thursday Murder Club’ series by TV host/producer-turned-author Richard Osman is on the way, ever since the film announced casting with Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie landing the lead roles.

    s9q2deZnwTHZAtRmWmG6c5

That’s quite a murderer’s row of casting –– pun entirely intended, since the book and resulting film will fall cleanly into the cozy murder mystery genre that the UK does so well –– and cements the latest big move for Osman, whose novel series has been a massive bestseller.

With Chris Columbus calling the shots, we now have the first look at the movie, and particularly the leads in the middle of their latest case. And if this one is a success, we can surely expect more.

Other books in the series include ‘The Man Who Died Twice,’ ‘The Bullet That Missed,’ and ‘The Last Devil to Die,’ as well as the newest installment ‘The Impossible Fortune,’ which is released later this year.

Here’s Osman’s statement on his inspiration for the stories –– spending time at his own mother’s retirement home:

“You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives. You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom. You think, ‘These people are so overlooked.’ The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve a crime is exactly where ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ comes from. Take these people who are underestimated but who have these incredible skills, put them together, and they can achieve anything.”

What’s the story of ‘The Thursday Murder Club’?

Osman’s book, the first in a series follows four irrepressible retirees –– Elizabeth (Mirren), Ron (Brosnan), Ibrahim (Kingsley) and Joyce (Imrie) –– who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun.

When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.

And this is no ordinary group of retirees –– they all bring a particular set of skills to the table. Mirren’s Elizabeth is a former spy, Kingsley’s Ibrahim worked as a psychiatrist, Brosnan’s Ron spend his days as a union activist and Imrie’s Joyce was a nurse.

Here’s what Columbus said about that main cast:

“This is the finest cast I’ve worked with since ‘Potter.’ They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

Osman sold the rights to Spielberg’s Amblin company in 2020, shortly after the first book became a hit, and development quietly proceeded along.

So, who did the company chose to adapt a popular series of novels set in the UK it hopes will spawn a successful franchise (and has form working with Spielberg)? That would be Columbus, who helped kick off the gigantic ‘Harry Potter’ film series!

With Osman aboard as an executive producer, production happened last year and the first trailer should be on the way before we know it.

And though the concept might seem more niche than the adventures of a boy wizard, the casting will certainly help push the idea here and beyond.

While it originally looked like Columbus would pull double duty and also write the script, the adaptation instead come courtesy of actor and ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’ writer Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote, whose credits include ‘Fear the Walking Dead,’ Apple TV+ series ‘The Crowded Room’ and a season of ‘Killing Eve.’

Who else is appearing in ‘The Thursday Murder Club’?

Beyond that starry main cast, we also have the likes of Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant and Ingrid Oliver.

And we have a few character details for some of those…

Ackie is Donna De Freitas, a local police officer and good friend to the Club’s members.

Jonathan Pryce plays Stephen, husband to Mirren’s Elizabeth.

Tom Ellis will be as Jason Ritchie, Ron’s (Brosnan) son and a retired boxer.

Sarah Niles has the role of Patrice De Freitas, Donna’s mother.

Ingrid Oliver will be Joanna Meadowcroft, Joyce’s (Imrie) daughter.

When will ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ be on Netflix.

Along with the first look photos, Netflix has announced that the movie will head to its servers on August 28th.

Gary Oldman in ‘Slow Horses’ season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.

Returning for its fourth season with one episode on September 4th, ‘Slow Horses’ continues to prove itself as one of the best series on offer via the Apple TV+ service.

In fact, Apple has clearly been so happy with the viewership of the show, and so willing to future-proof the availability of its cast, that it has been shooting two seasons at once. A fifth is already in the works, and the start of the fourth indicates that it has lost none of the unpredictable, grungy and satisfyingly British style that fans have come to enjoy.

While there’s little doubt that the key to ‘Slow Horses’ appeal is Gary Oldman having the time of his life as the grubby, greasy, but incredibly sharp agent Jackson Lamb (the actor has scored a welcome first Emmy nomination for the role following Season 3), the show still doesn’t lazily rely on the performance and the character, evolving each season to embrace new personalities and expanded storylines, while maintaining what works.

For Season 4, that more-of-the-same-with-a-twist approach shows no sign of faltering, and indeed, the initial episodes –– we’ll only really discuss the first here as that’s the one landing on premiere day –– are suitably excellent.

(L to R) Ruth Bradley and Gary Oldman in 'Slow Horses' season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Ruth Bradley and Gary Oldman in ‘Slow Horses’ season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.

Led by Will Smith (a writer and former stand-up with experience on Armando Iannucci’s shows, not the movie star), the series’ writing team is always on point, using Mick Herron’s novels as a starting point for the basic structure of each season and then expanding from there, but always in organic fashion.

It may not always be as action-packed as other shows (though it certainly has its moments –– witness the traumatic bomb attack that opens this season), when you have dialogue that crackles like this, you don’t need every space to be filled with someone waving a gun. And in the mouths of Oldman and the rest of the game cast, it’s always guaranteed to make you laugh or gasp… sometimes at the same time.

On the visual side of things, the show benefits from having both a more limited number of episodes per season (usually six) and one director through the whole batch, meaning that the show –– also thanks to a hefty budget from Apple –– ends up looking like a movie cut into TV-sized chunks. The environs of Slough House, the low-rent office where Lamb and co. are based, are wonderfully scruffy and evocative, in stark contrast to the polished glass and cold concrete of MI5’s main Regent’s Park HQ.

And the show uses London’s variety of landscapes and neighborhoods, plus other areas in the UK, to great effect. In Season’s 4 case, the man in charge of the show’s look is Adam Randall, who fits in well with the overall style.

    ‘Slow Horses’ Season 4: Performances

Oldman might rightfully score the lion’s share of the plaudits, but there is a wider ensemble all putting in great performances.

    Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb

Gary Oldman in 'Slow Horses' season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.
Gary Oldman in ‘Slow Horses’ season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.

Oldman has repeatedly said that he’s having the time of his life playing the grumpy, cynical and endlessly mucky head of Slough House, and that energy seeps out of every pore. The vanity-free performance (Lamb is frequently seen with lanky hair, grease stains and mismatched clothing), is a truly memorable one, the slovenly appearance the perfect camouflage for a truly inspired spy mind.

    Jack Lowden as River Cartwright

Jack Lowden in 'Slow Horses' season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.
Jack Lowden in ‘Slow Horses’ season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.

While he was the audience surrogate character at the start, the young agent banished to Slough House after a training mission goes wrong, River has grown into a great sidekick for Lamb, and an impressive character in his own right. And Lowden brings a superb blend of world-weariness and enthusiasm to the role.

    Jonathan Pryce as David Cartwright

Jonathan Pryce in 'Slow Horses' season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.
Jonathan Pryce in ‘Slow Horses’ season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.

Though the elder Cartwright has mostly been a supporting character in earlier seasons, it’s easy to see why Smith chose an experienced thespian like Pryce to play him; because he knew that David would become much more important down the line. And Pryce brings a potent combo of wise elder former agent and humbled aging grandfather to the part, which expands here.

Kristin Scott Thomas as Diana Taverner

Kristin Scott Thomas in 'Slow Horses' season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.

Few people can do withering putdowns like Thomas, and in Taverner, she’s found the ideal outlet. A canny, ice-cold professional, she’s forever frustrated by the hapless government types she’s forced to deal with. And her endlessly watchable interactions with Oldman are often a highlight of each season.

    Other notable characters

The rest of the Slough House ensemble all get their moments in the sun, and this fourth season includes a healthy influx of new characters (since in this show, a long life expectancy is never guaranteed). Highlights of the new episodes include Joanna Scanlan (like showrunner Smith, a veteran of Armando Iannucci’s shows) as the eager-to-please Moira and Tom Brooke as JK, a mysterious and honestly weird fresh addition to the office. And not forgetting James Callis as Claude Whelan, the nervous, officious new First Desk of MI5 and a great foil for Taverner.

‘Slow Horses’ Season 4: Final Thoughts

Gary Oldman in ‘Slow Horses’ season 4 now streaming on Apple TV+.

‘Slow Horses’ creative team have said they’ll happily keep making the show as long as Apple wants them to (and Mick Herron keeps writing books to adapt, with the author up to eight and counting), and that’s welcome news.

If only more series were as consistently entertaining, and this still full of steam when their fourth seasons rolled around, the TV landscape would be in much better shape.

‘Slow Horses’ Season 4 receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

What’s the story of ‘Slow Horses’ Season 4?

Adapted from Mick Herron’s ‘Slow Horses’ novel ‘Spook Street’, Season 4 opens as a bomb has exploded in a shopping center in London and MI5 is racing to figure out who is responsible. Second Desk (the second-in-command of the intelligence service) Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) must balance the demands of the investigation with effectively babysitting the nervy new First Desk (James Callis).

As for those at Slough House, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) is faced with his grandfather David’s (Jonathan Pryce) increasingly fragile mental condition, compounded by a new mystery that could threaten both their lives. Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), meanwhile, is his same old, irascible self, happy to endlessly mock his team of exiled agents, but also fiercely loyal when it comes to protecting them.

And he’ll need to, as a face from the past has returned to cause trouble…

Who else is in the cast of ‘Slow Horses’ Season 4?

The new season’s cast also includes the returning likes of Christopher Chung, Rosalind Eleazar, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Saskia Reeves and Kadiff Kirwan, along with new recruits Joanna Scanlan, Tom Brooke and Hugo Weaving.

  • ‘3 Body Problem’ Interview: Benedict Wong and Liam Cunningham

Premiering on Netflix March 21st is the new series ‘3 Body Problem,’ which is based on the popular Chinese novel ‘The Three-Body Problem’ by author Liu Cixin and was created by ‘Game of Thrones’ co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo (‘True Blood’).

The series stars Benedict Wong (‘Doctor Strange’), Jovan Adepo (‘Babylon’), Eiza González (‘Ambulance’), Jonathan Pryce (‘The Two Popes’), and Liam Cunningham (‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’).

Moviefone: To begin with, Benedict, were you familiar with the book the series is based on before you signed on for the project?

Benedict Wong: No, I wasn’t. I met the guys on Zoom whilst I was filming ‘Doctor Strange.’ I was just immediately very suspicious, why did they need three showrunners for this project? Then delving deep into the first novel is so dense, this science and this world of the game world. I was thinking, I don’t even know how this is going to be filmed. It’s such a challenge. I just picked up the gauntlet and ran with them.

MF: Liam, did you read the book before you started shooting?

Liam Cunningham: No, I’m going to wait till I’m done. I generally don’t do it. Even the last project I did with David and Dan (‘Game of Thrones’), I never read those books. I didn’t want two voices in my ear. My blueprint was the scripts and that’s what I was employed to deliver. If I read the books, if I’d had trouble with any of it, I would’ve used that as a reference. But that’s when I think I might be in trouble when I must go somewhere else for information. So, I didn’t want two voices in my ear, the book voice and the script voice. So, I am going to keep that treat until we’re all done on this. Then I’ll sit down on a beach somewhere under a palm tree and I’ll dig deep into the book.

MF: Liam, can you talk about your preparation and approach to playing this role?

LC: We do enormous amounts of preparation. Enormous amounts, but we prepare for the scene. Our showrunners are very good at formulating a character that is not about, he went to school here or anything like that. In fact, I had a couple of small questions, but I don’t think I ever talked about where he comes from.

MF: Benedict, how did you prepare to play your character?

BW: I think the world builds around you and within this center of your universe, you have everyone at your command. The calls that you make are answered and there’s so much power within that, and that builds that level of who this person is. We did get the blessing of Cixin, the author, and he knew that this was going to be inspired from the books because they were telling a global story but then it still had this Asian spine of myself, being from Manchester and Jess (Hong) being from New Zealand, and then the character of Ye Wenjie played by Zine Tseng and Rosalind Chao. But to tell much more of a global story of look, we have someone who’s Irish in command with this duo and its fascinating to watch because it’s almost like, well, how did they get there? And they have every right to get there too.

MF: Finally, Liam, can you talk about shooting the game sequences?

LC: It was very much what the guys are very good about it, but they kept it to a minimum. So, these cinematics as they call them, the room we were in was very high-tech. It wasn’t that volume that they used on ‘The Mandalorian,’ that semicircular LCD wall. It was a very particular lighting setup on an enormous level. They gave us this huge amount of room to wander about in this place. There were minimal sets. What you hang your hat on is what happens. What’s the information that’s given? You’re seeing this AI representation of whatever word the threat is. So, there was a certain amount, and you did have to use an enormous amount of your imagination and paint the pictures in your head, which can be interesting if it’s very important to the storytelling. It was a joy to do. It was quite a challenge, but a real joy.

Launching on Netflix with all eight episodes on Thursday March 21st, ‘3 Body Problem’ represents two gigantic challenges all at once: how do the creators of the ‘Game of Thrones’ TV adaptation follow their mammoth fantasy undertaking, and how do they do it using one of the most acclaimed science fiction novel series of recent years?

As it turns out, the answer is: with an abundance of brains and style, putting together a quality cast and fully using the resources offered by Netflix’s deep pockets to bring the novels’ story (or at least the first in the ‘Remembrance of Earth’s Past’ trilogy, which in book form is known as ‘The Three-Body Problem’) to life.

Does ‘3 Body Problem’ solve the adaptation challenges?

Eiza González as Auggie Salazar in '3 Body Problem.'

‘3 Body Problem’ is excellent right out of the gate, even more so than ‘Thrones’. It’s audacious, detailed, emotional and sweeping, hooking you with a teasing mystery (at least for those who have not read the books) that slowly and logically unfolds.

A hefty challenge is that a chunk of the narrative revolves around some big physics concepts, but the show smartly explains them in ways that anyone can understand. You won’t feel like you have to have ‘A Brief History of Time’ open on your lap as you watch.

The story weaves its way towards big revelations, but never feels out of reach, grounding its concept in human behavior and satisfying character interactions –– the main group all feel like people you want to spend time with as you take this journey alongside them.

    Script and Direction

Jess Hong as Jin Cheng in '3 Body Problem.'
Jess Hong as Jin Cheng in ‘3 Body Problem.’ Photo: Ed Miller/Netflix © 2024.

    D. B. Weiss and David Benioff know plenty about adapting sprawling stories with big casts, but here, even more than with ‘Thrones’, they smartly choose to follow a (relatively) small group so as to keep viewers engaged.

So while the story trips through two different time periods and focuses on a few different places across the planet (plus an advanced, immersive video game system that becomes key to the plot), you’re never left wondering who is doing what and why.

Working alongside fellow showrunner Alexander Woo (‘True Blood’), they stay mostly faithful to the book while making necessary changes for the new medium. Thanks to certain moments, they do get to indulge in what you might expect given their previous show –– the series kicks off with some serious head trauma and there is some nudity (though not sexual) in a future episode.

Sea Shimooka as Sophon in '3 Body Problem.'
Sea Shimooka as Sophon in ‘3 Body Problem.’ Photo: Courtesy of Netflix © 2023.

And with luck, they’ll avoid the pitfalls of ‘Thrones’ controversial final season, as the ‘Remembrance’ novel trilogy has an actual ending (no disrespect to George R.R. Martin there).

The show employs ‘Thrones’ veteran director Jeremy Podeswa plus Minkie Spiro, Derek Tsang and Pixar leading light Andrew Stanton, who has been building his live-action directing career steadily with the likes of ‘Legion’ and ‘For All Mankind’, and they all contribute some fantastic visuals as well as subtle and entertaining character work.

There are moments in this series that will have your jaw drop, though we won’t spoil anything here –– trust us, though, you’ll be sorely tempted to watch all the episodes as soon as possible.

    Performances

Having clearly been happy with a lot of their cast on ‘Game of Thrones’, a few of key actors carry over here.

John Bradley plays Jack Rooney, a man who has hit it rich with his snack business but is still close to his college friends. Rooney offers Bradley the opportunity to play a polar opposite of ‘Thrones’ Samwell Tarley, a cocky but still loveable sort who is one of the first start playing the mysterious game that will be a core element of the early chunk of the story.

Liam Cunningham, meanwhile, feels more like his ‘Games’ character of Davos Seaworth, sharing the cunning brain and salty tongue of the Westeros resident, but as Thomas Wade, a man with a definite mission to protect humanity (no matter the cost), he’s authoritative and darkly funny –– suffering zero fools.

‘Thrones’ High Sparrow, Jonathan Pryce, meanwhile, plays a character who… Well, that would be telling.

Benedict Wong as Da Shi in '3 Body Problem.'
Benedict Wong as Da Shi in ‘3 Body Problem.’ Photo: Courtesy of Netflix © 2024.

On Wade’s team is Benedict Wong’s Da Shi, and this is honestly the best role the actor has enjoyed for years. He knocks it out of the park as the world-weary but funny not-quite-cop who is investigating what is happening to scientists in the UK. While we’re big fans of Wong’s role as, well, Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has more to do in one scene here than most of the movies he’s shown up in.

The core of the characters is the scientist group who are friends with Rooney, who all feel like actual buddies instead of actors swapping dialogue. And they’re all very different personalities, brought to life by the likes of Eiza González, Alex Sharp, Jess Hong and Jovan Adepo.

‘3 Body Problem’ is a show blessed with a near note-perfect cast: everyone is worth watching here.

    Final Thoughts

Jess Hong as Jin Cheng in '3 Body Problem.'
Jess Hong as Jin Cheng in ‘3 Body Problem.’ Photo: Courtesy of Netflix © 2023.

Our advice for this one is: if you’ve yet to read the books, stay away from them and avoid Wikipedia! It’s absolutely recommended to go into this one knowing as little as possible, so the surprises hit harder, and the characters feel fresh.

Book readers are likely to be happy with the adaptation, which certainly doesn’t embarrass itself when put up against the literary source. But having seen the whole series, we’re confident in saying that this is a superior, satisfying piece of science fiction TV we can easily see ending up on Best of 2024 TV lists.

‘3 Body Problem’ receives 9 out of 10 stars.

What’s the story of ‘3 Body Problem’?

    • Apple TV+ has renewed ‘Slow Horses’ for a fifth season.
    • The show, starring Gary Oldman, adapts Mick Herron’s novels.
    • This new season will see bizarre events happening around London.

They might not be considered the best of the best when it comes to MI5’s roster, but the denizens of Slough House are certainly proving successful for Apple TV+, proving to be one of the breakout hits for the tech giant’s streaming service.

Which is to say that across three seasons (so far), ‘Slow Horses’ the Gary Oldman-starring series have scored plenty of critical praise and won lots of fans.

It’s hardly surprising then, that after rolling out renewals for the third and fourth seasons as a block (the third just launched its finale on December 27th), Apple TV+ has handed down a fifth season order almost as quickly.

‘Slow Horses’ is adapted from Mick Herron’s eponymous novel series, which is also known as ‘Slough House’, named for the low-rent MI5 office our heroes work from.

Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but misanthropic leader of the spies, who end up in Slough House due to their career-ending mistakes as they frequently find themselves blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world.

Yet for all their issues, the team frequently proves to be much more effective than any of their colleagues suspect, with Lamb a crafty genius who uses his off-putting, cantankerous exterior to thwart expectations. There are times when the Horses are the last line of defence between the UK and some serious threats.

Moviefone: To begin with, Gary, can you talk about the advantages of creating a character for a series verses a movie, and now that you are in your third season, do you feel like you really know who Jackson Lamb truly is?

Gary Oldman: I think we know who they are, and I think the writers now know who we are. With a feature film, you’ve got an hour and a half, two hours, to tell a story. I think the thing I’ve always actually liked about long form is that you get to really focus on character. We are on the journey with a particular character as it goes along and unfolds. So, I find it very satisfying and very liberating that we can work on a character and tell a story over basically, over six hours, rather than a tight timeframe or two.

MF: Jack, similar question for you. Now after three seasons of ‘Slow Horses’ do you feel like you really know who River Cartwright is or is there still more to explore in future seasons?

Jack Lowden: I’m still figuring him out for sure. I really do feel that I’m experiencing it along with River because you really don’t know what’s around the corner. He really doesn’t know, and I don’t know what’s around the corner until the scripts land in our inbox and I’ve purposely not read the books past the point that we’re at. But by the end of this whole journey with ‘Slow Horses,’ that could have been a massive mistake. I don’t know. But I’m quite enjoying not knowing and just finding out as I go along. But his character development is quite interesting in going from somebody who thinks quite highly of himself to where I think it’s beginning to unravel ever so slightly, which is probably what someone needs when they’re so insanely arrogant is that he needs to be brought down and I think he’s sort of realizing that. So, it’s a real joy to play him because I don’t really know where he’s going to go.

MF: Finally, Gary, when first started playing Jackson Lamb, did you draw inspiration from Mick Herron’s novels, or people that you’ve known in your own life, or did you just create the character based on how he was written in the scripts?

GO: As an actor, I think I like to refer to it as the script is like your map of the world, and if the material is good, then all one must do is just follow all the signposts. I think that often if you’ve got poor material, then you’re just working too hard. If you break a sweat, you’re working too hard. With Mick, he’s created this world and these characters so magnificently. I have just followed Mick’s directions. The character is in the material and in the books. The character is there for you. I have brought, like you do with anything, you bring your own inherent humanity to a part, but it’s out of the imagination of Mick. I just really had to follow the map.

    Preview:

    • ‘The Crown’ has launched a trailer for its final episodes.
    • This last outing will focus on Prince William.
    • Netflix will launch the remaining episodes on December 14th.

Since launching in 2016, ‘The Crown’ has been through a blend of praise (it has been seen as one of the most prestigious and ambitious shows on Netflix) and criticism (you don’t chronicle a semi-fictionalized version of the British Royal Family without incurring some naysayers).

But there’s no denying it has been a big success, impressively swapping casts every two seasons and managing to (largely) maintain its quality level.

From the looks of the new trailer, which shows off the final batch of episodes, the show will continue its mix of drama and legacy, as Prince William deals with the fallout of his mother’s death, his complicated relationship with his father and his own future –– both in love and on the throne.

The Queen, meanwhile, is looking back at her past and pondering the Royals’ place in the public’s hearts, which has eroded over the passing decades.

Still coming to terms with his mother’s death, Prince William (Ed McVey) heads back to Eton amidst an increase in attention from young female fans touched by his plight. The struggle to re-adjust leads to tensions with his family, as they try to support another young heir to find his way in the system and the world.

Later, as William takes up his place at St Andrew’s University, the omnipresent conflict of life as a public servant continues as he tries to balance the traditional undergraduate rites of passage with the constraints of his position and constant presence of personal protection officers. His perseverance is tested when he develops a crush on one of the most desired students on campus: a woman by the name of Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy).

Princess Margaret (Lesley Manville) suffers a stroke and is suddenly forced to reassess her lifestyle. As her health continues to decline, she finds herself slipping back into her memories, back to her secret night out with her sister during the biggest party in history: VE Day 1945. The memories from that evening, and what it taught her about her older sister, comfort her in her final days.

With the passing of her sister and her mother, her Golden Jubilee and having approved the marriage between Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla (Olivia Williams), the Queen (Imelda Staunton) starts to consider her reign and ultimately her legacy. Approaching her ninth decade, the Queen is forced to dig deep and really examine what is best for the future of the monarchy.

  • TV Review: ‘Slow Horses’ Season 3

Gary Oldman in 'Slow Horses' season 3 premiering November 29, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Launching on Apple TV+ on November 29th (with two episodes), ‘Slow Horses’ makes a triumphant return to screens with another winning blend of character work, memorable dialogue and compelling action.

While Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb continues to be the standout, but there isn’t a weak link in this cast, and some new recruits (including one who is only in the first episode) only add to that feeling.

Apple TV+ is clearly happy with the success of this adaptation of Mick Herron’s popular spy thriller novels, as the streaming service commissions seasons in batches of two –– which is why we got a taster of the second as the credits rolled on the first.

That will continue with Season 4, which has already been shot, and on the evidence of the quality of Season 3, that’s a very good thing.

Even in this era of peak television and shorter streaming seasons, there are shows that have run out of steam only a couple of seasons in. Fortunately, ‘Slow Horses’ is most definitely not one of them. Showrunner Will Smith (not that one) and his team have kept the entertainment value consistent through all the seasons so far, and the third is no exception.

If you’ve never seen the show, this is a very different world to the usual heroics of, says James Bond or Jason Bourne. It’s much more street level, scruffier and set in the world of MI5’s rejects, who have somehow fouled up on duty and are shunted off to a satellite office of the security service.

Slough House (from where the team gets its nickname) is the butt-end of the intelligence world, a place careers go to die when they can’t hack it at the sparkling glass and solid concrete world of the service HQ in Regent’s Park.

And yet… As led by the drunken, flatulent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), they somehow always manage to make it work. When big crises threaten the UK, the team is often drafted in, usually without really wanting to take part.

Oldman is very clearly having the time of his life playing Lamb, all stained shirts and stringy hair whose outward appearance and brusque manner (a choice line of his from this season is, “you’re about as welcome as a turd in a hot tub”) hides a keen intelligence and a strong feeling of loyalty to those who earn it. While he insults his team constantly, he’d lay down his life to help any one of them in truly dire straits.

(L to R) Saskia Reeves and Jack Lowden in ‘Slow Horses’ season 3 premiering November 29, 2023 on Apple TV+.

He’s primarily supported by Saskia Reeves’ Catherine Standish, an alcoholic but longstanding officer who runs Slough House and gives Lamb the counterbalance he needs.

Elsewhere, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), who started to show as the audience’s point of view when he’s banished to Lamb’s team after a bad call on a training exercise, has really become part of the gang –– realizing that he might have actually found the perfect place to work. Even if he complains about it from time to time.

The rest of the team are all interesting characters, including the arrogant (without much cause besides his hacking skills) tech bro agent Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung), the world-weary Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar), who is still recovering from the death of her partner/lover in Season 2 and newer recruits Shirley Dander (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) and Marcus Longridge (Kadiff Kirwan) get some much-needed depth, even if it does mean they’re both thrust into danger.

This is a perfectly gathered ensemble that play well off of each other, and the supporting cast is just as good –– Kristin Scott Thomas brings icy cool to the role of Diana Taverner, essentially second-in-command at the Regent’s Park HQ and endlessly bristling at being passed up for the top job.

That position went to Sophie Okonedo’s Ingrid Tearney, and she takes plenty of pleasure in reminding Diana of the place. Okonedo is so good as the bookish bureaucrat whose owlish nature sheathes a spine of steel.

When it’s time for the action to kick in, ‘Slow Horses’ doesn’t stint –– we won’t go into spoilers for this season’s big confrontation, but if you’ve seen the previous seasons, you’ll know it truly leans into the idea of conflict with stakes.

What doesn’t work in ‘Slow Horses’ Season 3?

There is very little that’s wrong with the new season of ‘Slow Horses’ –– while some could quibble that each new storyline brings some variation of espionage genre tropes: a threat to the nation; a conspiracy to keep secrets long buried; one of the team being kidnapped for leverage.

Each time, however, the writers undercut them with the humor and style of the show.

In a world where spies are usually slick operators who save the day with complicated gadgets or by seducing the right woman, it’s reassuring to know that ‘Slow Horses’ offers the alternative, a downplayed, grungy but very, very human look at intelligence work. Long may these horses ride (even if it is slowly).
