  • Astronaut Natalie Portman Unravels on Earth in New ‘Lucy in the Sky’ Trailer

Astronaut Natalie Portman Unravels on Earth in New ‘Lucy in the Sky’ Trailer

    Fox Searchlight

Famous Beatles tune “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” gets a literal interpretation in the new trailer for “Lucy in the Sky,” a film following an astronaut who has a transcendent experience in space, and is desperate to go on another mission — at any cost.

A haunting piano rendition of the title song plays as we see Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman) float among the stars, gazing out in awe at the Earth beneath her. She’s haunted by thoughts of her life below, and the disconnection she feels from it (including her husband, played by Dan Stevens); when she’s back on the ground, she immediately throws herself into training to return to space again.

But there are plenty of obstacles in her way, including an affair with a fellow astronaut (Jon Hamm), competition from new NASA recruits (Zazie Beetz), and skepticism from her superiors (Nick Offerman, Ellen Burstyn). As Lucy explains it, though, space is the “only place where anything makes sense,” and she becomes obsessed with making her way back, as her world — and her grasp on reality — begins to unravel.

The thriller marks the feature directorial debut of Noah Hawley (FX series “Legion”), and his surreal stamp is all over the chilling trailer. Lucy may be descending into madness, but it’s sure to be an entertaining — and unexpected — ride.

Lucy in the Sky” will make its world debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

  • Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde Join Clint Eastwood Drama ‘Richard Jewell’

Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde Join Clint Eastwood Drama ‘Richard Jewell’

    Amazon

The latest true-life tale from Oscar winner Clint Eastwood is shaping up to be quite the starry project, with two more big names joining the ensemble.

Variety has the scoop that both Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde have signed on for roles in “Richard Jewell” (previously titled “The Ballad of Richard Jewell”), based on the story of the titular security guard who discovered a bomb at Atlanta’s Centennial Park during the 1996 Olympics, and had his life destroyed as a result of a botched investigation. The film is adapted from writer Marie Brenner’s Vanity Fair article chronicling the case, with a script by Billy Ray (“The Hunger Games,” “Captain Phillips”).

Paul Walter Hauser (“Late Night,” “I, Tonya”) is playing Jewell, with Kathy Bates set to play his mother, and Sam Rockwell playing his attorney. According to Variety, Hamm will portray an FBI agent who investigated the attempted bombing, while Wilde will play Kathy Scruggs, a real-life local reporter who covered the case from the beginning.

Jewell’s story is a tragic one. Initially praised for discovering the bomb and saving hundreds of lives, authorities then pointed the finger at the security guard, accusing him of planting the device so that he could discover it himself, and look like a hero. Law enforcement leaked his alleged involvement to the press, and he was painted as a villain by the media and the public.

Jewell was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, but his reputation and health never recovered. He died a few years later, at age 44.

Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio — who had initially signed on to play Jewell and his attorney, respectively, before exiting the project due to scheduling conflicts — will serve as producers. No word yet on a production start date.

  • Amazon Will Give Adam Driver Film ‘The Report’ an Oscar-Qualifying Theatrical Run

Amazon Will Give Adam Driver Film ‘The Report’ an Oscar-Qualifying Theatrical Run

    Amazon Studios

Amazon Studios clearly think they have an award winner with the dramatic true story “The Report.”

The film, which stars Adam Driver, Jon Hamm and Annette Bening, will play theaters for two weeks beginning on September 27, before its streaming debut on Amazon on October 11. That’s the required amount of time to qualify for Oscar nomination. (The Academy opted not to expand that window despite recent controversy about streaming films and Oscar consideration.)

The film, which played this year’s Sundance festival, stars Driver as Daniel Jones, who investigated and wrote about the CIA’s secret torture program and then fought to have the report released.

    Amazon Studios

Bening costars as Senator Dianne Feinstein and Jon Hamm plays then White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough.

Scott Z. Burns, whose screenplays include Steven Soderbergh films “Contagion” and “Side Effects,” wrote and directed. (He also wrote the screenplay for the 25th Bond film: Phoebe Waller-Bridge was then brought in to “polish” the script.)

“Our hope with ‘The Report’ has always been that we would find a way for it to reach the largest audience possible. We are thrilled that Amazon Studios is putting so many resources behind reaching that goal,” said Burns of the film getting a limited theatrical release.

Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke said, “’The Report’ is an enthralling, investigative thriller featuring pitch-perfect performances and brilliant storytelling from Scott and the entire team. We are so proud to share this uniquely authentic and incredibly timely story about a true, American hero and his quest for truth and justice with our global Prime Video customers.”

Driver received his first Oscar nomination for his role in last year’s BlacKkKlansman.” Bening has been nominated for four Oscars.

  • Jon Hamm Says ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Footage Is ‘Out of This World’

Jon Hamm Says ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Footage Is ‘Out of This World’

    Sony Pictures Entertainment

More than 30 years after the original film’s release, a “Top Gun” sequel is finally set to take to the skies. And while the new flick has seen its share of delays, one of the new stars says it will definitely be worth the wait.

In an interview with Collider, Jon Hamm — who will be playing a new character in flick, though no details about the role have been release yet — teased some of the spectacular sights in store for filmgoers once “Top Gun: Maverick” hits theaters. The film, featuring returning stars Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, had been delayed from its original summer 2019 release date and shifted to 2020, reportedly to allow extra time to film flight scenes.

Based on Hamm’s rave review of the “out of this world” footage he’s seen so far, that production extension was the right call.

“They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen,” the actor told Collider. “We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”

Sounds awesome. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished product when “Top Gun: Maverick” flies into theaters on June 26, 2020.

  • Jon Hamm Wants to Play Batman

Jon Hamm Wants to Play Batman

    Jon Hamm Mad Men
    AMC

Jon Hamm wants to wear a different kind of suit for his next role — that of Batman.

The Emmy-winning former star of “Mad Men” told Graham Bensinger on In Depth that he’s interested in becoming the next Batman.

“It depends on the script, what the story is,” Hamm said. “I am a huge comic book fan, always have been. I have read comic books since I was nine or younger. And I am pretty knowledgeable about a lot of them. And I like the genre, and I like when they are done well.”

He added, “I’d probably fit the suit. I’d have to work out a lot, which I don’t love. But, I am sure there is an interesting version of that being out there. And if they wanted to tap me on the shoulder and ask me to do it: why not?”

Yes, why not? After all, it seems likely Ben Affleck — who played Bruce Wayne in “Justice League” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” — won’t continue on in the role in Matt Reeves’ upcoming “Batman” standalone movie. And Warner Bros. is reportedly looking to recast Superman, now that Henry Cavill is done, so this could be a good time to clear all the DC Extended Universe decks and start over.

But before you get too excited about Don Draper as the Caped Crusader, Hamm noted, “I have never had a conversation with anyone about it, literally. And I’ve sat in the room with all these guys. I have never been offered anything.”

  • Natalie Portman Shares First Look at ‘Pale Blue Dot,’ Replacing Reese Witherspoon

Natalie Portman Shares First Look at ‘Pale Blue Dot,’ Replacing Reese Witherspoon

    Fox Searchlight

Space is the place to be right now. Ryan Gosling has “First Man.” Sean Penn has “The First.” And now Natalie Portman has “Pale Blue Dot.”

Reese Witherspoon was attached to star in “Pale Blue Dot,” until scheduling conflicts arose with “Big Little Lies” Season 2. So the film swapped one Oscar winner for another. (What, like it’s hard?)

Natalie Portman just shared the first look at her character via Instagram, showing astronaut Lucy Cola in full NASA jumpsuit regalia. (See below.)

“Pale Blue Dot” co-stars Jon Hamm, Dan Stevens, and Zazie Beetz. The story follows Lucy as she returns to Earth after a mission to outer space. According to Variety, “The film explores the theory that astronauts who spend long periods of time in space begin to lose their sense of reality when they return home.”

Apparently there’s a love triangle angle, and once her affair with a fellow astronaut comes to an end, Lucy beings to lose touch with reality.

According to ET, the movie is loosely based on the real-life “astronaut love triangle” story. When NASA captain and naval flight officer Lisa Nowak returned from a mission aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 2006, her boyfriend Bill Oefelein broke up with her and began to date U.S. Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman. It got very ugly.

  • ‘Tag’ Trailer Pits Jeremy Renner Against Ed Helms, Jon Hamm in Lifelong Game

    “Tag,” you’re it!

The first trailer for “Tag” is here, featuring a star-studded cast including Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Jake Johnson, Isla Fisher, Hannibal Buress, Rashida Jones, Leslie Bibb, and Annabelle Wallis.

The movie, based on a true story, revolves around a group of friends who have been playing the same game of tag for 30 years. Every May, for a month, they stop at nothing to try to tag each other. Nothing is off limits — not even a funeral. And the only person who hasn’t been “it” is Renner, so everyone else gangs up on him when they gather for his wedding.

It’s a fun concept and the cast is a dream team of comedy talent, though Buress particularly stands out in the trailer. Even better is how the movie uses Renner, more known as an action hero type, whose dry delivery plays off well against the hijinks caused by the others.

“Tag” opens in theaters June 15.

  • Thank God! Jon Hamm to Play Angel in ‘Good Omens’ Series

HBO's Post Emmy Awards Reception - ArrivalsOn a day when we could all use some good news, the folks at Amazon have blessed us with a heavenly bit of casting: Jon Hamm is set to play an angel in the streaming service’s upcoming TV adaptation of “Good Omens.”

Hamm, who starred on “Mad Men” and most recently appeared in a recurring role on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” will return to TV in the role of the archangel Gabriel, a part that has been expanded significantly from the original book, co-written by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. In a statement, Gaiman explained the thinking behind that decision.

According to the author, he and Pratchett first dreamed up the concept of giving the 1990 book’s angels a bigger platform when they were working on a sequel. Though that tome never materialized, they continued with the idea while penning a “Good Omens” movie. That project also foundered.

“So when, almost thirty years later, I started writing ‘Good Omens’ for TV, one thing I knew was that our angels would have to be in there,” Gaiman explained in his statement. “The leader of these angels is Gabriel. He is everything that Aziraphale isn’t: he’s tall, good-looking, charismatic and impeccably dressed. We were fortunate that Jon Hamm was available, given that he is already all of these things without even having to act. We were even more fortunate that he’s a fan of the books and a remarkable actor.”

“I read ‘Good Omens’ almost twenty years ago,” Hamm said in his own statement. “I thought it was one of the funniest, coolest books I’d ever read. It was also, obviously, unfilmable. Two months ago Neil sent me the scripts, and I knew I had to be in it.”

“Good Omens” stars Michael Sheen as the angel Aziraphale and David Tennant as the demon Crowley. It’s expected to debut on Amazon with a six-episode run sometime in 2019.

  • Mumble Along with 6 Best ‘Minions’ Cover Songs of All Time

    Minions
    “Minions.”

Their penchant for spontaneously breaking into song first garnered them attention in the 2010 short “Banana,” but the Minions’ musical repertoire extends far beyond simple pop ditties about their favorite fruit. The gibberish-speaking yellow guys have spanned generations paying tribute to everyone from the Village People to Maroon 5.

YouTube is filled with dozens of catchy Minions cover songs, but here are six standouts that will have you singing and dancing along in no time.

    1. Village People, “YMCA”: The yellow evil army nails every detail – from Indian headdresses to handlebar mustaches – in this spoof of the ’70s disco anthem.

    2. Idina Menzel (“Frozen” soundtrack), “Let It Go”: Millions of little girls may argue otherwise, but this remake of the instant Disney classic will make you shiver with delight.

    3. All-4-One, “I Swear”: Flash back to the ’90s with this soulful rendition of the multiplatinum R&B group’s swoon-worthy ballad.

    4. Pharrell Williams, “Happy”: The title says it all. Clap along and let the music speak for itself with this animated video from the “Despicable Me 2” soundtrack.

    5. Various, “Jingle Bells”: The holidays just got a whole lot merrier thanks to this silly parody of the 1857 Christmas classic.

    6. Maroon 5, “Sugar”: Watch your back, Adam Levine. The Minions may just be the voice of a new generation.

With voices provided by Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, and director Pierre Coffin as the Minions, the animated comedy hit theaters on July 10. Watch the trailer below:
