    • Young actors Elijah Oshin, Finn Stephens and William Nash are also aboard.
    • The show will be on screens in 2027.

While the vast majority of the HBO ‘Harry Potter’ series is brand new casting, the company used the latest “Back to Hogwarts” showcase (a promo event linked to the return of Hogwarts students to the school) to announced that Warwick Davis, who played Professor Filius Flitwick in the movies, will be back for the show.

“The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling. It will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters ‘Harry Potter’ fans have loved for over twenty-five years. Each season will bring ‘Harry Potter’ and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

From the looks of the new casting, the series aims to replicate a lot about the movies, while also looking to chart its own course.

There are the big three: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, alongside co-stars Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger) and Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley).

Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby are playing Petunia and Vernon Dursley, AKA Harry’s aunt and uncle, who begrudgingly take the boy in as a baby following the death of his parents at the hands of Voldemort.

The couple –– who dote on overweight son Dudley (who we now know will be played by Amos Kitson) –– make Harry sleep in a cupboard under the stairs and have no time for the magical world he’ll come to be a key part of.

Katherine Parkinson, meanwhile, has scored the role of Molly Weasley, the caring, offbeat mother of the Weasley clan, who come to see Harry as a member of the family).

Bertie Carvel is on board as Cornelius Fudge, the blustering Minister of Magic.

Lox Pratt will be Draco Malfoy (Harry’s main rival at Hogwarts) and Johnny Flynn is playing Lucius Malfoy, his preening, proud father.

We also know that Leo Earley will be Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni scored the role of Parvati Patil, and Sienna Moosah is playing Lavender Brown, all three of them students at Hogwarts.

Previously, we learned that John Lithgow would be Albus Dumbledore, alongside Janet McTeer (Professor Minerva McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (as Severus Snape) and Nick Frost (bringing gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid to screens), and they’ll make up part of the series regular cohort alongside the young newcomers.

Stage actor Luke Thallon (whose main screen credit so far has been a tiny role in 2018’s ‘The Favourite’) and UK comedian and actor Paul Whitehouse (who US audiences might know from ‘The Death of Stalin’ but also has ‘Potter’ form after playing Sir Cadogan in third movie ‘The Prisoner of Azkaban’), as recurring guest stars.

Thallon has nabbed the role of Professor Quirinus Quirrell, a key part of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,’ while Whitehouse is set to play Hogwarts caretaker and grumpy cat owner Argus Filch, who pops up throughout the stories.

When will the ‘Harry Potter’ series be on screens?

With production now under way on the series, HBO has at least confirmed that it will be hitting the streaming service in 2027, though an exact date has yet to be revealed.

‘Potter’ creator and original novelist J.K. Rowling is a big consideration here, since A) she has final say on anything adapted from the books and B) is a problematic figure given her negative views on trans people.

This was HBO’s recent statement on the issue:

“Warner Bros. has been working with J.K. Rowling and in the ‘Harry Potter’ business for over 20 years. Her contribution has been invaluable. We are proud to once again tell the story of ‘Harry Potter’ — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance. J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

Fiennes (yes, him again) weighed in on the issue when talking to The New York Times in 2022:

“J.K. Rowling has written these great books about empowerment, about young children finding themselves as human beings. It’s about how you become a better, stronger, more morally centered human being. The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling. I mean, I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women. But it’s not some obscene, über-right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman.’ And I understand where she’s coming from. Even though I’m not a woman.”

  • Kate Winslet to Make Directorial Debut

    • Kate Winslet will star in, direct and produce ‘Goodbye June.’
    • It’s a Netflix film focused on a family.
    • Winslet’s son Joe Anders wrote the script.

It’s a common refrain that every actor secretly wants to direct. Well, maybe not all of them, but there are sufficient egos of many who see themselves as taking the reins and overseeing everything on set.

Yet it also presents quite the challenge; since the director is responsible for all decisions, so if you’re going to take it on, you have to decide whether you’re going to transition to more on the directorial side, such as Greta Gerwig, or switch between, as Ben Affleck appears to have chosen.

The latest person known more for their work in front of the camera now looking to transition behind it is Kate Winslet, who according to Screen Daily, has found her directorial debut in new Netflix family drama ‘Goodbye June.’

    SA64StlMMBL3z1wNvLHwR2

While we wondered whether she might try her hand at TV first (as she’s been taking more of a role behind the scenes of small screen work), she’s jumping straight to making movies –– albeit with a relatively smaller scale project.

    Kate Winslet stars in ‘Lee’.

Netflix is describing the movie as a “touching, yet humorous” drama which sees a fractured group of siblings pull together under sudden and trying circumstances.”

So there you have it. With luck, Winslet can bring something fresh to what sounds like a very familiar story.

The actor (and now director) does at least have an impressive cast lined up to appear alongside her –– Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall and Helen Mirren are all on board the movie.

And keeping it in the family, Winslet’s son, Joe Anders –– whom she shares with director Sam Mendes –– wrote the script for the movie.

This new movie will be set in in England in the present day and Winslet plans to kick off production soon in the U.K.

She has some support from Kate Solomon, who worked on ‘Lee’ with Winslet and will produce the new movie alongside the actor.

As with other actors who look to grow their career beyond simply performing, Winslet has also been working as a producer on several of her projects, including on the likes of ‘Mare of Easttown’ and ‘I Am…’

    Winslet on Directing

Kate Winslet stars in director James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’

Winslet’s decision to finally jump into the directing world might not be so surprising to those who heard her on the ‘How to Fail’ podcast, where she told host Elizabeth Day that she had resisted calls to direct, partly due to the time commitment involved, she now felt a sense of “urgency” and responsibility to women in Hollywood to step behind the camera.

    Here’s what she said:

“So many people will say to me on film sets, people I work with and know well, whether it’s an actor or a crew member, they will say, ‘Why aren’t you directing?’ and I’ll go ‘No, no, no, please don’t say it. Stop saying it. Why does everyone keep saying it?’ But the more I’m not doing it now, with the need to change the culture, the more I feel like I’m actually letting down other women by not doing it. I’m really starting to feel that in quite a loud way. The more of us that are doing it, the more will be inspiring others to do it. There’s no way I’m ever going to do something unless I really know how to do it properly.”

What else is Kate Winslet working on?

Kate Winslet 'Lee'. Photo: Roadside Attractions & Vertical.
Kate Winslet ‘Lee’. Photo: Roadside Attractions & Vertical.

Winslet was most recently seen in the aforementioned ‘Lee,’ about model-turned-World War II photographer, which included Riseborough among its cast.

She landed a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the film, which was also nominated for the BAFTA for outstanding British film of the year.

In addition to that, she was seen on small screens in HBO limited series ‘The Regime,’ playing a quirky dictator.

Coming up, Winslet has family movie ‘Dreamscapes,’ an audio/visual experience for which she provides the narration. And in December, she’ll once more be seen as Na’vi warrior woman Ronal in ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ the second of James Cameron’s planned sequels to the 2009 original.

When will ‘Goodbye June’ be on screens?

Given that it’s a Netflix movie and Winslet –– for all her acting and showbiz clout –– isn’t exactly on the level of Gerwig yet (who has been able to secure a cinematic release for her Narnia movie), we wouldn’t expect to see this one arrive in theaters.

Instead, it seems likely to debut on the streaming service’s system. Which is not always a bad thing, as it guarantees a huge potential audience. And you know people will be drawn to the idea of a movie directed by Winslet.

  • Andrew Scott Stars in the ‘Ripley’ Series Teaser

    Preview:

    • The first ‘Ripley’ teaser is online.
    • Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn star.
    • The new series lands on Netflix in April.

Given the proliferation of spin-offs and prequels, you might be forgiven, upon seeing the title ‘Ripley’, that the new Netflix series focuses on the earlier days (or somehow, through science fiction trickery, continues the story) of Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley from the ‘Alien’ movies.

But from a first look at the teaser for the show, it all becomes clear: instead, what we have is the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’.

This one comes from Steven Zaillian, who has quite the resume –– a regular collaborator of Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, he’s also an accomplished filmmaker in his own right, having directed the likes of ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer’ and re-written many scripts in his time.

The story has, of course, already been brought famously to screens by Anthony Minghella in the 1999 film named for the novel, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, but this new version appears to take inspiration from other books as well the main ‘Ripley’ tome.

    What’s the story of ‘Ripley’?

Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley in 'Ripley.'

Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) is a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York. When he’s hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son (Johnny Flynn’s Dickie Greenleaf) to return home, Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.

Zaillian writes and directs all eight episodes, and from the looks of the first teaser, has shot the whole thing in crisp monochrome to give it some standout style.

The cast for the show also includes Dakota Fanning, Elliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy and John Malkovich.

Scott, who is garnering plenty of attention thanks to superb work in the likes of ‘All of Us Strangers’, looks set to receive more acclaim for this. And the teaser spotlights an excellent ensemble around him.

All eight episodes of ‘Ripley’ are scheduled to arrive on Netflix on April 4th. If you ask us, given his less-than-truthful nature, April 1st might have made sense, but that doesn’t fit the streamer’s release policy.

Here’s the First Look at Johnny Flynn as Davie Bowie in ‘Stardust’ Biopic

    Paul Van Carter

A first look image from the David Bowie biopic “Stardust” reveals rising actor Johnny Flynn as the iconic singer.

The British film is set in 1971 and follows the 24-year-old Bowie as he embarks on his first road trip to America and creates his legendary Ziggy Stardust character. He’s supported by publicist Ron Oberman (Marc Maron) and wife Angie (Jena Malone).

“Stardust” is described as a “moment in time film” more than a biopic. As such, it will use period music songs that the musician covered, not his original tracks.

The film comes from director Gabriel Range (“I Am Slave”) and writer Christopher Bell (Netflix’s “The Last Czars”).

Flynn recently starred in Michael Pearce’s drama “Beast” and Amazon’s adaptation of “Vanity Fair.”

Actor/musician Johnny Flynn (“Beast,” “Genius”) has been cast to play a young David Bowie in the upcoming film “Stardust,” about the rock icon’s first visit to the U.S. in 1971.

Just one hitch: Bowie’s son, director Duncan Jones (whose films include”Moon”), isn’t on board at all. He tweeted, “As it stands, this movie won’t have any of dad’s music in it, & I can’t imagine that changing.”

According to the producers, the project won’t involve any Bowie songs, so the approval or disapproval of Bowie’s family wouldn’t necessarily derail it. In a statement they said the film is not a biopic like “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“It is a moment in time film at a turning point in David’s life, and is not reliant on Bowie’s music,” read the statement. “Much like ‘Nowhere Boy‘ for [John] Lennon, or ‘Control‘ for Joy Division, the production uses period music and songs that Bowie covered, but not his original tracks.”

[Worth noting: The excellent and underseen “Control,” in which Sam Riley played Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, featured the band’s music extensively. The recent Jimi Hendrix biopic “Jimi: All Is by My Side,” starring André Benjamin as Hendrix, was made without the blessing of the Hendrix estate and so featured zero songs written by the late rock star.]

Jones did tweet that he’d happily give his blessing to author Neil Gaiman (who penned the non-Bowie fantasy novel “Stardust“) to write an animated version of his father’s characters, but wouldn’t approve of a biopic.

As for the rest of the “Stardust” cast, Jena Malone will play his then-wife Angie (and mother of Jones) and Marc Maron will play a record company publicist. Principal photography is set to begin in June.

Flynn is just ending a run on  London’s West End opposite “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”) in Sam Shepherd’s play “True West.” His films include the 2011 indie “The Lotus Eaters,” in which he played a drug-addicted  musician and “Song One,” in which his musician character romances Anne Hathaway.
